Meet your favorite soap stars

Chat up ‘Y&R’ cast at Bally’s

They’re young. They’re restless. And they’re coming to Bally’s Atlantic City. On March 24 and 25, Kevin, Tucker, Phyllis and Adam from “The Young and the Restless” will meet and greet fans and answer questions as part of a two-day soap opera fest. “Our audience started as teenagers and are grown up and now casino-goers. They love soap opera and never give up on the story. They are family to these people. There’s no generation gap with soaps,” said Joyce Becker, of Soap Opera Festivals Inc. of Morgantown. Becker, the emcee for the weekend, and her husband, Allan Sugarman, have run these festivals for 35 years. On March 24, the Park and Garden ballrooms will become Genoa City, Wisc., as the stars each take turns participating in Q & A segments. Fans can ask the actors anything. Nothing is off limits, Becker said. Greg Rikaart, who plays Kevin Fisher, will be up at11a.m. Stephen Nichols, whose character is Tucker McCall, takes the noon hour. Michelle Stafford, who portrays Phyllis Newman, handles the 1 p.m. session. Michael Muhney, the Adam Newman character, takes questions at 2 p.m. Tickets are $40 and attendance is limited to 180 people per 50-minute session. “I’m stoked to be headed to Bally’s and super stoked to meet some East Coast ‘Y&R’ peeps,” Rikaart said in a release.

IF YOU GO Soap Opera Weekend takes place in various locations at Bally’s Atlantic City, Park Place and the Boardwalk. Tickets are $40 to $85 and can be purchased at the Bally’s box office, all Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com or (800) 736-1420.

Get ready for 29th annual Restaurant Gala

Food extravaganza raises money for culinary students

By WILLIAM SOKOLIC Courier-Post Staff

The 29th annual Restaurant Gala will honor Deb Pellegrino, executive pastry chef at Harrah’s and Showboat Atlantic City. The event is March 22 at Bally’s. DONNA CONNOR

For 28 years, the local dining community has banded together once a year to help fund scholarships for the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College through the Restaurant Gala. Some 50 top restaurants in the area step up to prepare specialty items for the entrees, while academy students show off their talents preparing appetizers for the reception and assisting with dessert. The 29th annual Restaurant Gala will be held March 22 at Bally’s Atlantic City. “This is a pretty impressive fundraiser,” said academy dean Kelly McClay. Since its inception the program has raised more than $2.5 million for the academy, IF YOU GO as well as Atlantic Cape ComThe Atlantic Cape Community Colmunity College and Atlantic lege Restaurant Gala will be held Cape Foundation operations. March 22 at Bally’s Atlantic City, Tha academy portion is earBoardwalk and Park Place. The marked for students from reception begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets throughout South Jersey and are $200 and can be purchased at beyond. www.atlantic.edu/community/gala/ “We award $100,000 to tickets_10.html $115,000 a year,” McClay said. The academy has seen a growing number of applicants. The culinary program tends to be more expensive that other community college degrees. McClay expects to raise close to $200,000 this year. “It’s a godsend. A lot of students are scholarship dependent. In all likelihood, they would not be able to finish the program without the scholarship,” she said. The students do the entire reception for the first 90 minutes, providing food and service. The theme this year is Dine like Royalty, with a classical approach to hors d’oeuvres but with a contemporary twist, McClay said. A picnic station will feature tuna carpacchio; curry chicken salad; cucumber and watercress sandwiches; and roast beef with horseradish cream. The appetizer menu includes a raw bar with clams, oysters and shrimp cocktail and king crab legs; torchon of foie gras, with dried fig and armagnac jam; steamed cockles and leeks; beef Wellington as a carved item; seafood crème brulee; lobster mousse croquembousche; slow cooked pork belly, with onion and goat cheese tarts; wild salmon and fennel fondue; oxtail stew with tomato chutney. A dessert reception, headed by Master Pastry Chef Eugen Ess of Trump Taj Mahal, will feature a royal-themed “extreme” cake prepared by Toni Walton, of Haddon Heights, a former pastry artist at Carlo’s Bakery and cast member on TLC’s “Cake Boss.” The gala will honor Deb Pellegrino, executive pastry chef at Harrah’s and Showboat Atlantic City, who has garnered national recognition for her creative confections after winning Food Network Challenge: Chocolate Myths in July 2011. Participating restaurants include Atlantic Grill, Buddakan, the Chart House, Chelsea Prime, The Continental, Dos Caminos, Foundation Room, Harry’s Oyster Bar and Seafood, Luke Palladino, Mia, McCormick & Schmick’s, Morton’s, The Steakhouse, Nanking, The Palm, Scarduzio’s, The Steakhouse, Teplitzky’s and many more. This year, Don’t Call Me Francis Band, Sensational Soul Cruisers, Ocean City Pops and Lenny Mitchell will provide entertainment throughout the evening. ‘The Rum Runners’

Lighthouse murder mystery puts Prohibition, booze in spotlight By WILLIAM SOKOLIC Courier-Post Staff

During Prohibition, booze often entered Atlantic City through the Absecon Inlet, under the control of Nucky Johnson. With this as a cue — along with the popularity of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” — the Absecon Lighthouse has fashioned its annual murder-mystery play around Johnson and his escapades to keep the liquor flowing in the resort. “Lighthouse Empire – The Rum Runners” is slated for March 24, and includes a climb to the top of the historic lighthouse, pizza from Tony Baloney’s and “smuggled” wine and beer. As with murder mysteries, someone gets killed in this tale about a salty lighthouse keeper and the life and death measures needed to insure Nucky’s speakeasys remain open. The purpose of the performance is for the audience to take the clues in the play

IF YOU GO “Lighthouse Empire – The Rum Runners” will be performed March 24 at the Absecon Lighthouse, 31 S. Rhode Island Ave.. Show time is 7 p.m. Admission is $25. The one who fingers the perpetrator gets a reward from the lighthouse gift shop. “Clues point to everybody,” said Stephanie Carr, director of educational programs at the lighthouse The lighthouse has done these mysteries for a number of years and this is the second year for the “Boardwalk Empire”themed play. Each show has four acts with breaks in between, with the entire evening lasting almost three hours, Carr said. During the breaks, visitors can enjoy food and beverages. Between acts 3 and 4, guests can climb the 228 steps in the lighthouse tower.

Harry’s Oyster Bar welcomes new chef Scott Henry has had a longtime relationship with the Dougherty family, owners of Dock’s Oyster House and the Knife & Fork. The Northfield native worked his way up the ladder at the venerable Knife & Fork, but three weeks ago, got promoted to take over as chef at Harry’s Oyster Bar and Seafood, the Dougherty’s restaurant at Bally’s Atlantic City. “We knew Scott would be a great fit for Harry’s because we had worked closely with him at Knife & Fork and knew firsthand that he was a talented chef,” said Maureen C. Shay, one of the owners of the three restaurants. “As the sous chef at Knife & Fork, Scott was second in command in the kitchen and was the person in charge whenever the chef was not there. From that role, we also knew Scott was organized and a good manager, two very important skills to keep a busy kitchen running efficiently.” Henry’s first order of business was handling the Restaurant Week crowd, but with that out of the way, he will concentrate on the evolving menu at Harry’s. “When summer gets closer I think I’d like to get more items rotating in the menu,” he said. As one of Henry’s initial focuses, he’ll increase the number of oyster-based dishes. “There are great oysters from all over we can use,” he said. “I’ll be playing with the menu as far as fish and oysters go,” Henry said. “I’m also looking at different soups. And oyster stew. We get a big request for oyster stew from feedback to bartenders and servers.” Henry will incorporate daily specials as a way to gauge what works on the menu. The specials will stick mostly to seafood, but coming from the Knife & Fork — a steak and seafood house — look for steaks and chops specials as well. With Dock’s and Knife & Fork in the company, Henry has a lot of support from two of the oldest dining establishments in the city. “I work with chef Stephan Johnson at Dock’s trying to make our menu more consistent. I work with them on a daily basis.” The new Harry’s chef is also tinkering with the dessert menu. With the kitchen prep area not very large, Henry is limited in what he can do. So the larger kitchen at Dock’s will help supply desserts.

IF YOU GO Harry’s Oyster Bar & Seafood is in the courtyard area of the Dennis Hotel in Bally’s Atlantic City, Park Place and the Boardwalk. Lunch and dinner is served daily, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. For more details, call (609) 431-0092 or visit www.harrysoysterbar.com.

Being in a casino setting affects the type of crowds, Henry found out. “It’s a more diverse group of people. The casino helps that,” he said. Another major difference between Harry’s and its company cousins is that the restaurant is open for more than dinner. Harry’s serves lunch, too. “And we’re planning on opening for breakfast in the summer. Maybe some omelets with shrimp. Something more on the lighter side. We might even set up in the courtyard area. We’ll have three periods of service. It’s a lot of work. But should be fun,” Henry said.

Two things you ought to know about Rick Springfield. 1) He was Dr. Noah Drake on “General Hospital” on and off from the early 1980s to 2008. 2) In the early 1980s, he recorded the monster hit “Jessie’s Girl.” Springfield is gone from “General Hospital,” but his musical legacy lives on in the guise of Port Chuck, four actors from the show who have a side gig as a rock band. And yes, “Jessie’s Girl” is often on the set list, so expect to hear it at Bally’s Atlantic City on March 24. The band, whose name comes from the fictitious “General Hospital” Western New York town Port Charles, formed two years ago. The quartet includes: Scott Reeves, who plays Dr. Steve Webber; Steve Burton, known to soap fans as Jason Quartermaine and Jason Morgan; Brandon Barash, who portrays Johnny Zachara; and Bradford Anderson, the Damien Spinelli character. Reeves left the soaps in 2001 to pursue a music career in Nashville. On his return to “General Hospital” years later, he hooked up with best friend Burton. “I said let’s put something together,” Reeves said. “It’s another facet of who we are. Even though all of us are so different, somehow it worked.” To Reeves’ surprise, Port Chuck has taken on a life of its own, including the release of an album with a second on the

IF YOU GO Port Chuck performs March 24 in the Traymore Ballroom at Bally’s Atlantic City, Boardwalk and Park Place. Show time is 10 p.m. Tickets are $35 to $75 and can be purchased at the Bally’s box office, Ticketmaster locations, Ticketmaster.com or (800) 736-1420.

way. “This has become bigger than we ever anticipated. It just started out as a fun idea, a onetime thing to fans. But it was so successful we needed to think about this more as a long-term pursuit.” The band’s first album consisted of a string of covers from the 1980s. The next album will feature some original songs, Reeves said. “Originally we intended to be an ’80s cover band. The individual songs represent who we are, our favorite artists. But fans who come to see us, they get a really diverse mix of music,” he said . Don’t look for the original material at Bally’s. Those songs will appear on the tour that starts in April. “Fans get taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride back to a retrospective look at their lives. They relive tunes they grew up with. A couple songs we really make our own,” Reeves said.

Oh, leprechauns!

It’s easy being green at Gypsy Bar at Borgata on Saturday. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with live entertainment and beer specials in this laid-back lounge. PHOTO PROVIDED

Gypsy Bar celebrates St. Pat’s

When you think of places to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the Gypsy Bar at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa might not be the first name on the list. After all, this eclectic watering hole is known for its tequilas. But you might be wrong. “With all the ingredients for unpredictable, laid-back fun where bartenders are part of the show and partygoers leave their inhibitions at the door, what better place to celebrate St. Patty’s than Gypsy Bar,” said Gregg Coyle, director of nightlife for Borgata. “With the holiday falling on a Saturday this year, guests have the luxury of hanging out with us all day. We’ll have live music from The Next and Lucky You, beer and tequila specials, and maybe a leprechaun or two.” The fun begins at 7 p.m. when The Next takes the stage to rock the joint. Lucky You follows at11p.m. And to show its Irish side, the Gypsy Bar will have beer specials to go with the tequila. MIXX has a celebration of its own beginning at10 p.m. when Manufactured Superstars presents I Love House, part of Borgata Nightlife's Electronic Music Series. Manufactured Superstars is the name for an electro, progressive, and house music DJ/production duo, whose brand is two cartoon characters who look like they came from South Park.
