Borgata rooms get more luxurious When Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa opened its doors , it boasted all the finest amenities in a room, from its showers for two to the high-thread-count Egyptian sheets. That was 2003, a long nine years ago in casino age. So the hotel has embarked on a program to revamp all 1,566 of its classic guest rooms, along with the hotel corridors. The renovations don’t come cheap – they carry a price tag of $50 million. Scheduled for completion in July, the project will strengthen Borgata’s position as Atlantic City’s premier hotel, casino and spa, officials say. “This redesign will ensure that we continue to deliver the world-class, luxury resort experience our guests have come to expect from Borgata,” said Bob Boughner, the hotel resort’s chief operating officer, who oversaw the design of the hotel at the outset. “Our guestrooms represent a progressive departure from other hotels in the region, with impeccable attention to detail that combines feelings of established hospitality, original touches, and smart amenities to exude absolute comfort.” Borgata’s redesign provides guests with a variety of amenities coupled with personalized care that results in rooms that are as smart as they are stylish, Boughner said. The new experience begins with the hotel’s corridors, which are enveloped by warm color, rich textures and dramatic lighting. Once inside the hotel room itself, visitors will enjoy calming neutral grays, balanced with bright bursts of berry.
Borgata is spending $50 million to revamp its rooms to increase the luxury factor. The changes should be complete by July. PHOTO PROVIDED Each element of the room complements the others, with cut-out floral details in the metal lamp echoed in the dark wooden headboards, and magenta ribbon swirls in the carpet re-imagined in the wall art. The furniture is purposely mismatched with English sycamore bedside tables and desks paired with dark wooden dresser sets featuring jewel-like knobs. Covered by 300-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets with Fili D’oro linens and hypoallergenic poly-filled pillows, Borgata’s
signature beds welcome guests to a sleep sanctuary. Oversize, glass-enclosed showers and plenty of counter space in the bathrooms deliver a spa-like atmosphere. Each room is outfitted with a 46-inch flat-screen TV, equipped with an interactive ITV solution that provides the ability to check My Borgata Rewards balances and existing reservations, explore all aspects of the property via imagery and menus, review room folios and check-out
without visiting the front desk. Guests will also have access to wireless, high-speed Internet access and a Bittel integrated phone unit offering multimedia functionality, including speakers, clock radio and alarm, iPod charger and player, and a USB charge port. “We believe in a full-service guest experience, blending genuine friendliness with efficient luxury,” said Mark Vanderwielen, vice president of hospitality for Borgata.

Revel readies for opening
April 2 is resort’s soft launch By WILLIAM SOKOLIC Courier-Post Staff
The much-anticipated Revel resort will be the first new casino hotel since Borgata opened nine years ago, and the first to open on the boardwalk since the Trump Taj Mahal in 1990. A lot is riding on this $2.4 billion project expected to employ 5,000 people. Here are some details:
IMPACT ON MARKET Revel expects to cater to four segments of the tourism market: group meetings, leisure travelers, day visitors and overnight gaming visitors, better known as the high rollers. Ah, but the question becomes, how will Revel impact Atlantic City overall? Will it take customers from everyone else or draw newcomers to the city? “I believe the group and leisure segments will attract significant new business. When I think about day visitors, there will be the increased curiosity factor throughout the summer. We’ll get some new business there. We expect little impact on the rest of the city from our overnight customer, however,” said Kevin DeSanctis, the CEO of Revel Entertainment. DeSanctis expects almost every visitor coming to Atlantic City to stop by at least once, just to see what the fuss is all about. While Revel will dazzle as the expensive newcomer in town, DeSanctis sees the resort as only part of the city’s landscape
Beyonce to be first at Revel Beyonce will be the first concert headliner to perform at Atlantic City’s newest casino. Her shows at Revel are scheduled for May 25, 26 and 27. Ticketmaster will begin selling seats on April 6. The city’s 12th casino will have a festive grand opening ceremony on May 25, but guests will be able to Beyonce will be the gamble and first concert headliner check into hoat Revel. EVAN tel rooms on AGOSTINI/ASSOCIATED PRESS April 2.
Revel is taking full advantage of its ocean view. Guests can see the waves from every hotel room and the pool. PHOTO PROVIDED “We’re a very good tool in the tool box of the city,” he said. “Based upon what I am seeing, it should be a very good summer for the city. There will be no lack of things for people to do.”
Chef Michel Richard brings Central Michel Richard and two other restaurants to the Revel casino lineup. The resort will have 14 restaurants representing various cuisines.
RETAIL None of the retail elements will be ready for the resort’s soft launch on April 2. When it comes to retail, the idea is to create a fun experience, not just a place to shop. Revel will break down its retail space into seven “living rooms,” DeSanctis said. The concepts of each vary. For example, one will feature technology, another lifestyle. Every living room will offer some type of food and beverage, such as cappuccino. “Each area is designed to be a place to hang out,” DeSanctis said. The plan is to offer selections visitors can’t get back home. But the products will also let guests pick up a bathing suit for the swimming pools, or maybe an evening outfit. And the prices? “We do not want people to take out a home equity loan to shop here,” DeSanctis said.
DINING By the time Revel kicks into high gear later this year, the resort will feature 14 restaurants . Unlike most of the other casinos in town, Revel will not operate any of its dining spots. Instead, they will all be operated by outside restaurateurs. “We’re not particularly good at food,” DeSanctis said. The hotel will include a fast-food com-

ponent amid the host of gourmet chef names, but one with quality at a great price point, he said. Another difference: Revel will not feature a buffet. “No one ever came up with a buffet concept we were thrilled with,” DeSanctis said.
THE BEACH The hotel plans to integrate the beach and ocean into the guest experience. “At the end of the day, that is really the goal,” DeSanctis said. When guests arrive, they get a glimpse

Tuckahoe Brewing Company is less than a year old and makes its debut at the annual Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival next weekend.
Tuckahoe, Cape May brewing companies make debut at A.C. Beer and Music Festival By WILLIAM SOKOLIC Courier-Post Staff
Tuckahoe Brewing Company and Cape May Brewing Company have much in common. They both launched less than a year ago. They both settled in Cape May County. They both made inroads in local pubs and restaurants. And they both make their debut at the seventh annual The Celebration of the Suds, Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival, each offering four brews. The two join some 80 breweries from across the country that will showcase their craft beers March 30 and 31 at the Atlantic City Convention Center. The festival allows beer aficionados, beer lovers and casual beer drinkers to speak to company representatives and brewers, in addition to offering a venue for discovering new craft beers. Tuckahoe, based in Dennis Township, opened in December. The brewery’s brain trust includes architect Jim McAfee and three teachers from Mainland
High School in Linwood: Chris Konicki, Tim Hanna and Matt McDevitt. The beer fest is one of the largest in the country, Hanna said. “For a start-up brewery, this provides a great opportunity for us to get recognition.” In addition to a pale ale and a porter, Tuckahoe will serve a coffee stout, brewed with coffee beans, and a wit, a style of Belgian beer that’s white in color. Like many craft breweries, Tuckahoe began as home brews produced by its founders. But it was at a party more than a decade ago that the idea of a commercial enterprise took root, Hanna said. “Everyone had to represent a country and bring beer from that country. There was a wide array of beers. That got us thinking that this is something people do everywhere. So we put together a plan to do this commercially,” he said. Cape May Brewing Company opened last summer, a partnership among Ryan Krill, his father, Bob, and college friend,

Chris Henke. “Chris and I were home brewers, and we loved the idea of starting a brewery. It’s a romantic idea, so we went for it.” The brewery is located by the Cape May County Airport, in an area surrounded by five wineries, Krill said. The festival provides a big stage for a company that hopes to expand throughout Cape May and Atlantic counties. “This is the closest beer festival on a national scale. It’s a really big deal and it’s in our backyard,” he said. A tasting room at the brewery is open on Saturdays. “It’s a madhouse for us. It’s becoming increasingly popular,” Krill said. Among the four brews expected at the festival, Cape May IPA is the one that made the brewery famous, Krill said. “It’s a balanced beer approachable for people not used to drinking IPA.” The festival goes beyond breweries this year with culinary demonstrations and nationally known bands.
IF YOU GO The Celebration of the Suds, March 30 and 31 at the Atlantic City Convention Center, One Miss America Way. Show times, 7 to 11 p.m. March 30, noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. March 31. Tickets are $50 in advance at www.acbeerfest. com, Ticketmaster.com or (800) 745-3000. (Designated driver tickets are $10, available at the door.)
of the ocean as they drive up. In addition, the design of the building, with its reflective glass all around, mirrors its surroundings. The ocean, beach and clouds are visible in the reflections. The placement of pools and the decks also speak to that integration of ocean views. Many of the restaurants allow diners to see the ocean from their table. And all guest rooms offer an ocean view. While there won’t be any beach bars on the ocean side of the boardwalk, there will be the equivalent on the hotel side, DeSanctis said. The bar will be connected to one of the nightclubs, and feature day beds for those seeking relaxation in the sun.
New parking garage opens It has charging stations for electric cars By WILLIAM SOKOLIC Courier-Post Staff
In terms of scale, the opening of a parking garage last week pales against the pending opening of Revel’s $2.4 billion resort on April 2. But the $30 million spent by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority on a five-story parking garage is nothing to laugh at. The garage, on Fairmount Avenue between Christopher Columbus Boulevard and Mississippi Avenue, features 1,677 solar panels on the roof and six charging stations for electric vehicles. And the garage, dubbed The Wave, provides 1,180 parking spaces on six levels in a midtown area that depended primarily on the Caesars-Bally’s parking garage between Atlantic and Pacific avenues. The additional spaces will serve the expanding Tanger Outlets The Walk, Boardwalk Hall shows, events at the Atlantic City Convention Center and the Ducktown neighborhood, home to Dante Hall Theater of the Arts, a number of restaurants and the centerpiece of the proposed arts and entertainment district. The new garage will be managed and operated by Standard Parking. The Wave will have an attendant on duty 24-7. A partnership with South Jersey Transportation Authority allows for the acceptance of the E-Z Pass Plus in the new garage.
PARKING RATES Up to 1 hour: $3 1 to 8 hours: $7 Monday to Friday; $10 Saturday and Sunday 8 to 24 hours: $10 Monday to Friday; $13 Saturday and Sunday Monthly parking rate: $50 Executive reserved parking: $75 per month

‘The Gambler’ rides lucky streak
Backstage with Go Go Gadjet
Kenny Rogers headlines at Harrah’s

Cover band rocks House of Blues March 30
For the third straight year, Go Go Gadjet played the final set in last month’s Thon, the annual student fund drive at Penn State that raises money for children’s cancer. Thon raised a record $10.6 million this year. “We were the last act before the totals were announced. We got to play before 15,000 people at the Jordan Center. It was all emotions. We invited some of the children on stage,” said lead singer and Penn State alum Jeff Tomrell. Playing a packed arena is not a common occurrence for the Reading, Pa.-based band, which earns its keep playing clubs from Atlantic City to State College. On March 30, Go Go Gadjet will be the main attraction at Backstage at the House of Blues, playing a venue which in recent months featured The Gin Blossoms, Filter and other hit-makers. Playing a big arena once a year or taking the same stage as The Gin Blossoms doesn’t make the band eager for stardom. It is quite content to play covers. “We have zero aspirations to record original music,” Tomrell said. “There’s no money to be made that way as a rock ’n’ roll
band. And it’s nice to go home every night to see my wife, especially with a child on the way.” That doesn’t mean the band doesn’t have fans. The Penn State connection follows the band wherever it goes, even to the Jersey Shore. “A lot of Penn Staters come to our shows,” Tomrell said. What these fans come for is a cover repertoire that includes The Beatles, Kanye West, and everything in between, with a lean toward current dance-oriented hits such as Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger.” “We’re like DJs with instruments,” said Tomrell, who comes with a musical pedigree. He played piano from an early age. His father was a band director. “I was destined to be a musician,” he said.
IF YOU GO Go Go Gadjet performs March 30 at Backstage in the House of Blues, 801 Boardwalk. Show time is 10 p.m. Admission is free.
For a man who played “The Gambler” in movies and in song, Kenny Rogers admits he’s had a lucky streak his entire career. “It’s amazing how things happen for me. I walk away from something and just fit right in somewhere else. My whole life, that’s how it’s been,” Rogers said by phone from the road in Louisiana, where he is touring in support of his close friend Lionel Richie. Richie has an album out next week featuring country duets. Indeed, the name of Rogers’ autobiography due in the fall is titled “Luck or Something Like It.” He just turned in the final chapter. An amateur photographer, Rogers will release the first of a series of photo books at the end of the year, this one titled “American Beauty.” Rogers also started work on an album for Warner Brothers, but don’t expect to hear any new material when he performs at Harrah’s Saturday night. Instead, prepare for a greatest hits ride. “It’s what people want to hear,” said the 73-year-old legend. “I don’t like to do new songs because the audience has to work to see if they like the song. With the hits, everybody likes them. The good thing is I have enough hits.” The hits date to his days with The First Edition. The group scored with the psychedelic-inspired “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In),” which was followed by the pop and country chart success of “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town,” for which the group was billed as Kenny Rogers and The First Edition. Eventually, he went off on his own with hits such as “The Gambler,” “Islands in the Stream” and “We’ve Got Tonight.” Ironically, Rogers never saw himself as a solo singer. “I love singing harmony. We’re all equal partners.” He was one of numerous voices in the ultimate harmony record “We Are
Get ready to sing along. Kenny Rogers will perform his greatest hits at Harrah’s on Saturday. JAY FLETCHER The World,” written by Richie and Michael Jackson. He and Richie go back well before those days. When Richie left the Commodores, Rogers insisted he move to L.A. if he wanted a solo career. “He lived in my guest house,” said Rogers, who just appeared in the SXSW Festival in Austin with Richie. The autobiography, a reluctant project, won’t be a derogatory tell-all or a book designed to stir up feuds. It will mention some of the weird facets of his career. Like what, you ask? Like the time with The First Edition when they forgot to tip the guy $100 to ensure the amps were checked in as luggage on a commercial flight. “The amp got sent off to Australia.” Or the time Rogers played in Saudi Arabia to people who had no clue about him or his music. “I found out if you give people on the front row tambourines, it doesn’t matter if they know your music. They love tambourines.”
IF YOU GO An Evening with Kenny Rogers takes place Saturday in the Concert Venue at Harrah’s Resort. Showtime is 9 p.m. Tickets are $30 and $40 and can be purchased at Harrah’s Box Office, ticketmaster.com or (800) 745-3000.

It’s not as if Dan Meisner has a onetrack mind. It’s just that he’s so good at portraying Jake Blues — one half of The Blues Brothers. Meisner plays the character created by John Belushi in the latest edition of “Legends in Concert” at Bally’s Palace Theater through May 17. “I found sticking to one character and doing it well is beneficial for me,” he said by phone. He’s part of the initial 2012 Legends production, which also features tributes to Tina Turner, Liza Minnelli, Ray Charles and young Elvis Presley. The award-winning Las Vegas-based “Legends” will play Atlantic City all year, but with five different lineups. “We are honored to be invited to bring our show back to Atlantic City and begin our 21st season in the market, with an unprecedented array of unique commitments from Bally’s to improve and extend our fan’s experience,” said Brian Brigner, chief operating officer for On Stage Entertainment, producers of the show. The Blues Brothers segment is a tribute to Jake and his brother, Elwood, Meisner said. “We incorporate music with the trademark comic twist.” Meisner grew up in Kingston, N.Y.,
where he did plays in high school. “I’ve always performed in one format or another. I’m a guy who likes to entertain,” he said. “I enjoy the audiences here,” Meisner said of Atlantic City, where he is making his fifth stint. “They connect with the characters, so it’s a really good time for us.” Tyler Hunter, who plays Elvis, agrees. “I love it. And I’m getting fantastic feedback,” said the Lincoln, Neb., native. Though just 21, Hunter has played Presley for three years. While Hunter endured some mild taunts from friends as a teenager for his love of Elvis, he gets the last laugh. “I’ve been to Las Vegas and a lot of fun places, I’ve met a lot of people, and most of them still live at home with their parents.”
IF YOU GO Legends in Concert plays through May 17 in the Palace Theater in Bally’s Atlantic City, Boardwalk and Park Place. Show times are Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m.; Wednesday at 3 and 8 p.m.; and Saturday at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Tickets are $32.50 and can be purchased by visiting www.ticketmaster.com, calling (800) 736-1420 or at Bally’s Box Office.
When the folks at Milton, Del.-based Dogfish Head brewery approached Ryan Horner with a proposal for a beer tasting at Mia, the restaurant general manager was all in. Dogfish Head and Mia will partner on a six-course dinner March 29 paired with six vintage brews. The event coincides with the 2012 Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival on March 30 and 31. The paring of beer — rather than just wine — with gourmet food says a lot about the evolution of craft beers. “The beer game has changed since the late 1980s. It’s taken to a whole new level,” Horner said. While similar to wine tastings, beer has more personality than wine, he said. “Every beer has a different flavor,” he said. Where various Cabernet wines will be the same with a specific dish, Indian Pale Ale, for example, will produce a different result with a different version of the brew, Horner said. The purpose of such a pairing is to maximize the flavors of both the beer and food. “We build the menu around the beer, to enhance the taste of the food and the beer,” Horner said of the approach by Chef Paul Hanley. “We look at the actual notes on the beer and use the flavor profile to create a menu around the beer. It’s a nice romance, a relationship between dish and beverage itself.” Selections that night include a 2007 Olde School Barley Wine, one brewed with a larger alcoholic content, making it fall between wine and beer. It will be paired with beer braised short ribs, creamy leek compote and fried crispy leeks. Mustard and herb-crusted lamb chops with black truffle barlato, and Dijon thyme sauce will be paired with a 2007120 Minute IPA, an ale infused with hops for 120 minutes, which brings out the hop flavor and increases the alcohol content. Dessert will feature chocolate and raspberry molten cake paired with 2008 Black and Blue, brewed with blackberries and blueberries.
