EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY Atlantic City Food & Wine Show is a full plate of fun

Next weekend Caesars Entertainment’s four Atlantic City casino hotels are all about the food and the wine as Food Network joins forces again to present the 2012 Food and Wine Festival, July 26 to 29.

Stars such as Robert Irvine, Andrew Zimmern, Anne Burrell, Buddy Valastro, Nadia G., Aaron Sanchez, Tyler Florence, Paula Deen and Diane Henderiks will share their favorite recipes, and meet and greet fans throughout the weekend.

Why is this kind of event so popular? In places like Atlantic City, restaurants are game changers, with celebrity chefs at Revel, Borgata, Caesars Entertainment and other casino hotels, Irvine said.

“It’s a lot more fun keeping up with Vegas, Chicago and New York in restaurant choices.”

Irvine says one of the reasons chefs have attained exalted status as stars is because they represent a good place in the world. “The Food Network has no crimes.

It’s good TV. Kids can watch.”

Caesars Entertainment launched its first two-day food and wine event, Toast to the Coast, in 2007 in Atlantic City. This festival featured a handful of select chefs to participate in a series of intimate culinary events. Brought back in 2008, Toast to the Coast drew nearly 2,600 culinary enthusiasts.

In 2009, the company redesigned and relaunched the event as the Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival. The festival drew close to 20,000 guests to a series of culinary-themed parties, tasting events, wine

2010 marked the first year the Festival partnered with the Food Network as its title sponsor. Spanning across all four Caesars Entertainment properties, the festival welcomed Food Network chefs including Sunny Anderson, Anne Burrell, Paula Deen, Guy Fieri, and Alex Guarnaschelli.

Robert Irvine will serve up savory dishes as food show

Robert Irvine always has considered Atlantic City like home. The celebrity chef worked at Resorts in his early years.

“Atlantic City is such a melting pot of people. I used to love going from work to the Irish pub for a beer and to hang out.

The city has a special place in my heart,” Irvine said by phone from Arkansas, where he is filming an episode of his popular, “Restaurant: Impossible.”

So it’s not surprising he’ll return to the resort town for the 2012 Food Network Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival, presented by Caesars Entertainment. Irvine does four of these events a year around the country.

He will do a version of his show “Dinner Impossible” on July 27 at Arturo’s, the Italian restaurant in Bally’s. He and the culinary staff at Bally’s will create an evening of savory dishes. “I have no idea what I will prepare,’’ Irvine said. “I’ll go in and create right there. I entertain as I feed the

Irvine also will join the “Your Morning Cup” event July 29 to chat with early risers. “People will see the real side of Robert Irvine,” he said.

Diane Henderiks frequently hopscotches across the country participating in foodie events from Atlantic City to Snowmass, Co. A personal chef and registered dietitian on a mission to teach America how to cook and eat well, Henderiks will be one of the busier chefs at the 2012 Food Network Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival, July 26 to 29 at all four Caesars Entertainment properties.

Henderiks will do a cooking demonstration July 27 at the Viking Cooking School in Harrah’s Resort, the only one of four cooking demonstrations where samples will be available to eat.

“They wanted something that guests can . . . replicate, but is a little special,” she said in a phone interview. “Rather than do a casserole or lasagna, I came up with something easy, delicious, fancyschmansy and good for you.”

The Viking School demo includes a pistachio-pesto crab cake with avocado cream and a kiwi-mango salsa.

The other three will be held at the Grand Market on July 27, 28 and 29. The first will feature a quick dip salsa spread with three dips, all easy to make in less than 30 minutes. Among the spreads: edamame and avocado hummus, creamy sun dried tomato and a simple salsa verde.

At the July 28 market at 2 p.m., Henderiks will do a fiesta in a flash, with grilled fish tacos, EZ black beans and shredded pico de gallo salad.

Finally, on July 29 at 2 p.m., watch Henderiks prepare grilled salmon velvet with lemon and thyme sauce, roasted, ripe tomatoes and veggie and herb brown rice.

Henderiks also looks forward to “Your Morning Cup,’’ and participating in the “Sweet & Stylish’’ event, which mixes a fashion show with desserts and cocktails.

“I am providing something simple to replicate: a mint- chocolate pretzel and nut bark using dark chocolate.”

In 2005, after years in private practice Henderiks self-published a cookbook and launched “Diane's Daily Dish,’’ her personal chef and catering business. “Any dish can be revamped to be good for you,’’ she said. “It just takes a little education and finesse.’’

FUNNY GIRL Comedienne Heather McDonald performs at Golden Nugget

Heather McDonald got the right gig at the right time. Anxious for a full-time job, she emailed Chelsea Handler asking to submit material for the comic’s new talk show, “Chelsea Lately.”

McDonald met Handler years ago and that connection stayed intact. “I knew Chelsea well enough that I had her tone and cadence nailed and that voice came through in my submission,” she said in a phone interview.

The performer appears Saturday at the Golden Nugget with three other “Chelsea Lately” veterans: Brad Wollack, Morgan Murphy and James Davis. The four give their respective hysterical viewpoints on all things pop culture.

The writer hoped for a13-week commitment. But five years later, McDonald still works with Handler, not just for “Chelsea Lately” but for the spinoff, “After Lately.”

The latter is a “Curb Your Enthusiasm”style show in which the characters play themselves and improvise dialogue based on a loose script.

“I never had a job for five years,” McDonald said. The Handler gig spared McDonald from having to step up her job as a Realtor at a time when housing went bust.

McDonald can be seen weekly with Handler on the roundtable or performing in comedy sketches.

With four comics set for the Golden Nugget, someone goes first and someone goes last. McDonald doesn’t much care where she fits in. “I don’t have an ego about where I go.”

That said, if she’s first up, she’s first off and she can relax with a drink. Then again, she likes the middle two positions. “By the end, the audience may be tired.”

All four will do meet-and-greets after the show.

While the four have similarities that draw them to “Chelsea Lately,” they have very different styles, McDonald said. “If you like her humor, you’ll see that in our stand-up set.”

McDonald describes herself as an observational comic, discussing what goes on in the world. “I’m specific to life being married for 12 years, with three kids,” she said.

And McDonald does impressions including Drew Barrymore, The Kardash-

ians, Miley Cyrus, Sarah Palin, Renee Zellweger, The Octomom, Cher and various Real Housewives.

She credits “Evening at the Improv” for her desire to be a comedienne. “I said to myself, one day I want to do that. I didn’t understand how I would do that or come up with material,” said McDonald, who cowrote “White Chicks” with the Wayans Brothers.

Despite such a movie, McDonald calls herself a girly-girl female comic. “I always wanted to be married with kids. I loved Ray Romano’s style and Jerry Seinfeld. They parlayed their stand-up into a successful sitcom,” said the comic, who guest starred on television shows Frasier, “Malcolm in the Middle,” “Reno 911,” “Drake and Josh” and “Watching Ellie.”

McDonald has a deal with Warner Bros. to develop a sitcom based on her real life.

“It’s a dream of mine to be a mom in a sitcom, like Patricia Heaton in “Everybody Loves Raymond” or Julie Bowen in “Modern Family.” I loved Roseanne for how real her show was. There wasn’t always a perfect ending and feelings got hurt. The characters were real.”

McDonald’s husband, Peter, is a mortgage broker and Realtor hit hard by the recession. So he spends a lot of time with the three children while she plies her profession. Her act includes embarrassing the children.

She suspects when kids get old enough to see that mom embarrassed them on stage or in a sitcom, she has an answer.

“Do you like private school and the swimming pool? This is how we get it. Part of the business is revealing embarrassing things about you guys. Being a little embarrassed is not so bad, so deal with it.”

Maybe you’ve seen the billboards for Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa: the faces of a quartet of smiling women, one with a cork in her mouth, gathered around the tagline, “The Show That Never Ends.”

Or the one that features a laughing woman on a motorcycle, a pig in sunglasses and circus performers as companions, carrying the Emerson, Lake & Palmer lyric “Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends,” from the song “Karn Evil 9.”

“There has always been a sensual and fun experiential feeling that Borgata has provided, therefore important to display in the campaign,” said Joe Lupo, senior vice president of operations for Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. The provocative new campaign — hitting print, radio, television, online, social media and mass-transit this summer –— was designed to deliver the message that the party just keeps on going at Borgata, Atlantic City’s market leader.

“Since its opening, Borgata has been the epitome of ‘The Show That Never Ends,’ ” said John Schadler, managing partner of SK+G Advertising, which developed the campaign.

To celebrate the launch of the campaign, Borgata is offering an exclusive Facebook contest that will award $100,000 in prizes to 10 winners in 10 weeks.

The images used in the advertising campaign aren’t overt references to the resort, Lupo said.

“But there are subtle reminders of the property that the different people and imagery represents, such as the spa, dining, nightlife and gaming, all done in a way that is not so obvious.”

For almost nine minutes, Jeffrey and Joanne Lesusky watched, enthralled, as concrete seemed to tumble from the front of Boardwalk Hall.

Cubes rolled around the exterior facade. Pink molecules bubbled up. Balls swung back and forth. Colored stacks piled up. At various times, the words etched at the top of the building seem to jump out.

The Lesuskys, of Pottsville, Pa., were not watching a film about an acid trip.

From their vantage point on Kennedy Plaza across the boardwalk, they watched “Duality,” a custom-made 3-D light show that bounces off the front of the historic hall twice an hour from the time the sun sets to 2 a.m.

“It’s exciting,” said Jeffrey, who was spending a few days at Trump Plaza. “We’ll stay to see it one more time.”

“Very nice,” said Joanne. “It’s something to see.”

And it’s free, folks.

The production comes courtesy of Montreal-based Moment Factory, which took only three months to design what usually takes twice that long. The company has completed more than 300 projects for clients such as Cirque du Soleil, Jay-Z, Disney, Céline Dion, Microsoft and Madonna,

It is one of two superstar concerts that weekend, along with Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias.

“R You on the List” will be the first headlining tour for three-time Grammy nominee Flo Rida, best known for the hits “Low” and “Right Round,” the infectious title track from his new album, “Wild One.” “This tour is going to be off the hook,” Flo Rida said in a press release.

The tour marks the last time people will have a chance to see “The Voice” star Green before he begins a residency at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

The contents of the year-round production will be fluid, changing with the seasons and with events at the hall. For example, in late fall, the $3 million show will feature a holiday theme. Most of the cost went to infrastructure.

“The images speak to the building and its usage,” said Jeff Guaracino, chief strategy and communications officer for the Atlantic City Alliance. “There are a lot of fun things. It’s a whimsical creation.”

The show is divided into five acts and celebrates the duality between the right and left brain, the land and ocean, old and new. Moment Factory composer Vincent Letellier developed an original score that incorporates orchestral, indie and electronic music. Combined with the multicolored visuals and a well-crafted mix of 3-D mapping and motion graphics, this project looks to be a futuristic carnival for the senses.

A film over the windows behind the colonnade blocks the light from entering the hall and instead reflects it back to the boardwalk. The production requires 13 light projectors strategically spaced on Kennedy Plaza and 25 speakers, which blend into the building.

Since Boardwalk Hall is a historic building, the speakers and projectors required approval from the state historic commission. Turns out, the building had light sources in the exterior in 1929, so it all passed muster.

Audiences can judge Jennifer Lopez’s performance at a Boardwalk Hall show on July 29. The concert will also include Enrique Iglesias and Frankie J. WIREIMAGE group is honored to be included in the lineup. “We’ll be having such a great time playing for fans this summer.”

Karmin got its start on YouTube with covers of Chris Brown and Katy Perry songs, which have more than 70 million views collectively.

Houston native Bangz has been rapping since the age of 15, motivated by his mother’s struggle as a single parent. He’s best known for his song “Drank in My Cup.” Iglesias and former “American Idol” judge Lopez headline the show July 29 at Boardwalk Hall. With combined album sales of almost 125 million, the two Latino singers have tallied countless chart-topping hits and sold-out tours.

The biggest Latin recording artist in history, Iglesias has 22 No.1singles on Billboard Latin songs chart and multiple No.1s across the charts.

Latin singer-songwriter Frankie J. also will perform.

Just as Atlantic City’s tourist attractions ramped up for the season in June, a major storm at the end of the month threatened to wash away any gains. But some visitor trends still continued to climb.

More than 329,000 unique visitors checked out information about the city on the Atlantic City Convention & Visitor Authority’s website, www.doatlanticcity.com, a 26.6 percent increase from June, 2011. Year-to-date, the site has experienced a 35 percent gain in overall visitors, and a 25 percent jump in unique visits. Officials said that 66 percent of those who browsed the site in June were new visitors. Web users opting to receive regular e-newsletters about Atlantic City leaped 317 percent year-to-date.

“Likes” on Facebook rose from 2,748 new likes last June to more than 42,000 last month, powered in large part by special promotions conducted by the ACCVA. Use of the mobile visitor site, mobile.accva.org, also grew dramatically year-to-date — 265 percent over the same period in 2011. For those wanting old-school hard copies, online requests for the Official Visitors Guide published by the ACCVA climbed 22 percent year-to-date.

Year-to-date numbers for those stopping for information at the ACCVA’s visitor welcome centers on the Atlantic City Expressway and in Boardwalk Hall remain high. Information counselors assisted more than 65,000 visitors so far this year, a 13.8 percent gain over the same period in 2011. They also helped 15 percent more people by phone in 2012.

lion cars used the Pleasantville toll plaza of the Atlantic City Expressway year-to-date, a 2.9 percent increase over 2011 figures. Moreover, 14.9 percent more overnight bus passengers arrived through June 2012 than in the first half of last year. Scheduled air service deplanements at the Atlantic City International Airport are up 2.94 percent this year.

According to Jeff Vasser, president of the ACCVA, “These additional arrival and overnight figures point to a shift from day-trip visitors to overnight visitors — something everyone in the Atlantic City tourism industry has been working toward. As we continue to add more capacity at the hotels and increase our tourism offerings with things like the nightly 3-D light show, “Duality,” at Boardwalk Hall, visitors will have even more reasons to stay for multiple days.”
