WINES TAKE CENTER STAGE Golden Nugget’s vino fest is an Italian grape affair

The Golden Nugget’s Summer Wine fest will highlight California Italian wines or, as industry experts call them, CALITAL wines.

These wines should prove popular, not just with the Italian-American demographic which frequents Atlantic City, but everyone who relishes the taste of wines

by Robert Mondavi, Cosentino and Andretti.

“All of my wineries are of Italian heritage. They trace their roots to the Italian immigrants who came over and settled in California. The oldest wineries in California are all started by Italian immigrants.

They were the true beginnings of the California grape and wine production, some dating before prohibition,” said Scott Tarwater a show organizer.

Each day’s event has a food component, with a strong Italian style. To take the culinary element a step further, much of the produce and dairy comes from New Jersey. And there is music, to boot. And a fashion show on Sunday.

“The festival strokes all the senses,” Tarwater said. “This should be well attended. Ticket prices are ridiculously low for what you get.” » Aug. 17: Wine & Jazz Reception, from 8 to 10 p.m. at the H20 Pool Bar. Live jazz and wines from more than 30 wineries complemented by chef-inspired cuisine. Golden Nugget hired 18 professional runway models who will walk the runway to choreographed music. “It will be like New York fashion week, it’s that kind of quality,” Tartwater said.

“We hope this will be an annual event like the beer festival,” he said.

Last October, Golden Nugget hosted its first beer festival, which returns Sept. 29 to 30, with craft beers from throughout the Northeast.

“We have 44 breweries with brewmasters.”

Hoping the young and the tech savvy will embrace Atlantic City casinos, some Borgata folks turn to a humorous viral video to draw this segment who rebuff traditional advertising.

In the “Meet the Casino Virgins” video, Billy Scafuri asks the hotel desk clerk, “Does the casino have a volume knob?”

In another scene, Scafuri’s partner in comedy, Adam Lustick, asks if he can bring his own playing cards.

The exchanges have a very “Hangover” feel to it, with Lustick and Scafuri both playing casino virgin Zach Galifianakis.

The brief interchange introduces the two comedy sketch partners who star in a pair of short funny videos designed to pitch Borgata to a younger, more tech-oriented audience.

“In the last few years, the Internet boom has been a keen way to advertise subversively without advertising. It’s a cool thing. You hide ads in viral videos. The Internet audience is adverse to heavy advertizing,” Lustick said.

The videos are chock full of witty comments from a comedy team that also is part of the Harvard Sailing Team sketch comedy group. The title — “Casino Virgins” — implies the two comedians are clueless when confronted with a casino resort atmosphere.

The comedy duo formed seven years ago with no connection to Harvard but with a connection between Lustick, who graduated NYU and Scafuri, a Hofstra guy.

“Borgata was looking for viral comedy videos, not commercials,” Scafuri said. After meeting with Borgata public relations people, Liza Costandino and Brian Brennan, they went to work.

“We jotted down a lot more jokes then we ended up shooting,” Lustick said. “When toured with Liza and Brian, we were able to place jokes already written into dynamic locations.”

The videos took nine hours to shoot in a single day, said Scafuri, who grew up in Voorheesville, a sleepy town outside Albany, in upstate New York. The goal was two videos, but there was so much material, they created three, he said. It was a stree-free shoot, Scafuri said, and one that may lead to something on a grander scale.

“Borgata deserves credit for being artistfriendly and supportive,” he said.

Lustick studied theater at NYU. “I had a sketch comedy class, which was good experience. Billy was entrenched at the Upright Citizens Brigade and interning at SNL.” The guys moved to Los Angeles about seven

TaKe-On Productions and MSG Sports announced the return of full-rules Thai kickboxing to Atlantic City with “Battle at Bally’s II,” a professional and amateur Muay Thai event set to take place Sunday in the Grand Ballroom at Bally’s Atlantic City.

Sanctioned by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, this event will feature a fight card that includes today’s best professional and amateur Muay Thai fighters, competing under rules which allow for forceful knee and elbow strikes. “ ‘Battle of Bally’s II’ provides guests with a level of excitement and high-octane energy rarely seen in this region,” said Kevin Ortzman, senior vice president and general manager for Bally’s and Showboat Atlantic City. “Muay Thai kickboxing, in itself, treats audiences to competitors that consistently give all-out, tour-de-force performances, so the fact that we have an exhibition taking place in a venue as intimate as the Bally’s Grand Ballroom, makes this a truly coveted ticket.”

The main event will be the rematch between Gabriel Varga and Philadelphia’s Justin Greskiewicz. At the time of their first bout, Varga had only a handful of pro fights under his belt and surprised the more experienced Greskiewicz with an impressive win.

Band grounded in the here and now Gogol Bordello plays House of Blues

Eugene Hütz never considered an alternative to music as a lifestyle and career. He skipped school in his native Kiev, in the Ukraine, to concentrate on guitar, drums and writing music.

“School and work never made any sense to me,” Hütz said. “It never entered my mind to do something other than music. I believe this is what I was simply put on the earth to do. There was an extreme urge to follow my impulse and intuition.”

That intuition led to the formation of Gogol Bordello, a band Hütz calls Gypsy punk rock, with an infusion of Latin, Mediterranean, reggae and rock ‘n’ roll. The eclectic band plays the House of Blues tomorrow night. The other seven members include Sergey Ryabtsev; Yuri Lemeshev; Thomas Gobena; Michael Ward; Oliver Charles; Elizabeth Sun and Pedro Erazo.

“The show’s gonna . . . rock. Rock ‘n’ roll in general means music of vitality. Little Richard and Chuck Berry are still vibrant. Rolling Stones, too. Our band comes from that tradition, a powerful energetic vitality,” Hütz said.

Nikolai Gogol was a crucially impor-

tant Russian writer who wrote graphic folklore in an avant-garde way. He created a new genre. “This is something we are going to do with our own brand of rock ‘n’ roll,” he said.

The group has proven a success in art circles in New York. Initially they performed in galleries rather than clubs, Hütz said.

“That is why even to this day you see a lot of traces of performance art in our show, mostly situational, of course. As I said before, Gogol Bordello is a multi-layered animal. Gypsy punk music. Rock ‘n’ roll. Performance art. Natural energy,” he said.

Such different approaches have attracted not one, but five documentaries about Gogol Bordello, none initiated by the band.

Hütz and his band mates experience life in the here and now. “I’m not living in the past or the future but in the now. That’s what the gypsy punk evolution is all about.

What colors our music more than anything is the natural joy of being. A lot of people lose touch with that when they enter the real life realm.”

And if he wasn’t in Gogol Bordello?

“I’d be a musician in a different band,” Hütz said.

Actor-musican is the perfect fit for drama coming to Caesars

If ever a performer and role belonged together, it’s Dominique Scott and Drew, in “Rock of Ages.”

“I truly believe that it doesn't get better — at least for me and where I'm at in my life right now,” Scott said in an interview before the show opens an extended run at Caesars Atlantic City. “This role was a perfect culmination of my skill sets.

“It is also one of the hardest roles,’’ he continued. “A lot of people can’t do this. I have extensive vocal background,” said the 24 year-old Miami native.

The film version, with Tom Cruise and with Diego Boneta, as Drew, opened this summer. Don’t expect the film to influence what Scott does. “I saw it after I did 200 shows. But it is eye-opening to see someone else play a role you know so well.

The movie is different from the show, even though the plot line is still there.”

Being in entertainment was preordained. “It’s not a choice for a lot of people. It’s a career that chooses you,” said Scott, a performer since age 6. He performed professionally at 10.

“I was always a clown. I needed a lot of attention,” said Scott, whose father was French and worked in the consulate. He went to a French school growing up.

But Miami was not the place to be for musicals. He attended Syracuse University because of its theater program. After

college, Scott moved to New York with his band Domin8trx trying to get as many gigs as possible. “I was also auditioning like crazy and worked at a restaurant eight hours a day.”

He scored roles in “Miss Saigon,” “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Will Rogers Follies.”

Scott auditioned for “Rock of Ages” and got cut. “ . . . I knew the role was too perfect for me not to even be considered, so I went home and made a video. I sent the video to the casting director, and a couple weeks later I got a call to come in for the final day of callbacks — and I booked the show.”

Despite his grueling schedule in “Rock of Ages,” Scott continues to plug his band.

“At first, my band mates were bummed about ‘Rock of Ages.’ ” But as a rock band, he’d be lucky to play before 100 people. “It was usually 20 to 40. Now, I perform before 2,000 a night.

And it’s similar to what I do with my band.

The exposure is great.”

In addition to the special on couple’s massages, another focus of summer treatments is an orange and grapefruit facial using the renowned Sothys product.

Rosenberg opened the spa with the economy in tatters, and has grown between 10 and 30 percent a month. In part, she credits the stress people are under in the economic downtimes for such success.

“People want great customer service and amazing treatments. We deliver on both accounts,” Rosenberger said. “It’s been great to be a part of the Caesars Entertainment properties.”

Vive Day Spa customers often guests from Showboat but also hair clients from Revel, which does not offer that service.

Sheraton and Courtyard Marriot in Atlantic City also send their guests to Vive for spa treatments. Vive does in-room massages at Sheraton, and also in-suite at Showboat.

Massages are the most popular treatment, with Swedish or the hot stone the most sought after. Then there’s the hot and cold stone together. The heat warms up the muscles, which is followed with cold marble stone on ice.

“It helps alleviate tension and swelling,” Rosenberger said.

‘Thunder over the Boardwalk’ marks its 10th anniversary

For its 10th anniversary, the “Thunder Over the Boardwalk” air show moved from a Wednesday to a Friday. The change wasn’t made to draw more of a crowd — 800,000 people already show up for the spectacular display.

Instead, the move was made to accommodate the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the headlining act. But the weekend date — the show will take off Aug. 17 — will likely boost the size of the beach crowd, as will the added sand pumped in by the Army Corps of Engineers this summer.

“This is the largest beachfront weekend air show in North America and among the top five overall in the country based on the number of people,” said David Schultz, president of David Schultz Airshows LLC, which stages “Thunder over the Boardwalk.”

“This is a perfect venue and it’s free.”

In addition to the Thunderbirds, the show features

the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, U.S. Navy Super Hornet, U.S. Coast Guard Search & Rescue Demo, U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight, Geico Skytypers, U.S. Air Force Globemaster III and U.S. Airforce Thunderbolt II. Additional civilian acts will perform. F-4 Phantoms are among the new attractions this year.

“We try and mix it up every year,” Schultz said.

Whatever the mix, the air show promises aerobatics maneuvers, formation flying and solo routines by military and civilian pilots. Witness fly-bys and demonstrations that reach up to15,000 feet in the sky and as low as 50 feet over the water against the Atlantic City skyline.

While centered around the Florida Avenue beach, the flyovers stretch along 15 miles of coastline, from Brigantine to Ventnor. Even Ocean City picks up some of

the aircraft, Schultz said.

In addition to the beach, the ocean makes for up-close viewing. “We do not close the ocean off from spectators. You can float and watch the show from the water.”

Schultz expects more than 460 boats and pleasure craft in the water. “You’ll be able to walk from boat to boat between the city of Ventnor and Steel Pier without getting your feet wet,” he said of the closepacked flotilla.

“It will only get better each year,” Schultz said.

Tech Sgt. Harold Roger Brown earned a distinction while serving in the U.S. 5th Army’s 92nd Infantry Division during World War II. He became the first Atlantic City African American to die in combat.

Brown’s division consisted of African Americans from across the country, and became known as Buffalo Soldiers, a moniker first given by Native Americans to a 19th-century African-American cavalry unit.

To honor Brown, the second annual Atlantic City Salutes America’s Armed Forces Parade will feature a riderless horse with one boot in its stirrup. The horse will lead the Aug. 15 parade with a banner that honors Brown, said longtime talk-show host Pinky Kravitz, who came up with the idea for the march last year.

The parade, which is part of a week that culminates Aug. 17 with the “10th Annual Thunder Over the Boardwalk” air show, honors the sacrifice and dedication of service members throughout the years.

A dozen Casino Reinvestment Development Authority Ambassadors will follow the parade procession line on bicycles.

Last year, 120 units participated. As of Aug. 1, more than 140 have signed on for this year, including 30 musical groups, Kravitz said. Also on board for the 2.3mile walk are 17 floats, military and civic

leaders, and several veterans groups.

“It’s absolutely phenomenal,” Kravitz said of the response. “But that’s not a surprise.”

A year ago, it drizzled part of the time and most of the crowds, estimated at 100,000, remained, he said.

“It was something very special. Afterward we heard from people who said we want to be part of it. This is a way to pay homage to those in the armed forces,” Kravitz said.

First-ever Fantasy Football Fest at the A.C. Convention Center

Eagles standouts Michael Vick and LeSean McCoy will be on hand at the first Fantasy Football Fest, held at the Atlantic City Convention Center Aug.18 and 19.

“It’s a lucky break for us,” said Greg Topalian, senior vice president for Reed Exhibitions, which produces the show.

Vick and McCoy will join a stellar collection of players — most of whom are retired — to participate in a weekend of football experiences on the cusp of the 2012 season. Among the announced stars: Joe Montana, Jim Kelly, Phil Simms, Brian Dawkins, Matthew Berry, Joe Theismann, Bruce Smith, Tony Dorsett, Chris Doleman, Tony Siragusa, Lawrence Taylor and Ottis Anderson.

“We are aiming to make the inaugural Fantasy Football Fest a unique opportunity for fans. The high-profile athletes participating in panels and autograph signings are just two of the ways we have been able to do this,” Topalian said.

While much of the expo caters to fantasy football players, the overall vibe appeals to even the casual sports fan.

“Depending on your level or lack of interest there’s a lot to do,” Topalian said.

Hard-core fantasy football fans will salivate. “They can hold their own drafts there. There will be incredible insights with a dozen fantasy experts breaking down players by position and sleeper picks. How cool is that.”

The fan who is not into fantasy football can buy memorabilia and other merchandise or grab an autograph.

Kids and others can stop by the interactive zone, kick a field goal and try their passing accuracy. Outside there’ll be a beer-tasting area with great craft beers.

Atlantic City offers a lot of advantages, Topalian said. It’s in the Eastern corridor. It’s not Philadelphia where the Eagles dominate. It’s not New York, where the Jets and Giants rule.

“It’s also a great destination to get away to,” said Topalian, who counts Caesars Entertainment as one of the key casino sponsors. And there’s a huge population base between New York to Washington.”

Pre-sales have been strong, Topalian said.

“Our goal is 20,000-plus, which is outrageous, incredibly busy,” he said.
