AT NUGGET, IT’S TIME TO PARTY! Dec. 31 marks NYE, first anniversary

When the year comes to an end Monday night, Golden Nugget will celebrate its first full anniversary in Atlantic City. “We’re ending the year on a bright note. That’s a big thing for us,� said Laura Powers, director of marketing at the Golden Nugget. “New Year’s Eve is the most important night from a gaming standpoint. It’s the biggest night of the year, a time of celebration and great activity.�

The hotel will celebrate in a number of ways. The biggie centers on a dinner party for 1,400 in the Grand. “It’s a high-end event with an orchestra open to players and the public,� she said. “We’re one of few casinos whose main party is open to the public.�

The menu that night consists of antipasto; a salad with artichoke hearts, teardrop tomatoes, honey balsamic reduction and pesto vinaigrette; filet mignon stuffed with crabs, jumbo shrimp, with a wild mushroom sauce; grilled vegetable medley and arugula mashed potatoes.

Dessert includes creme brulee and mixed berry compote. All this for $149 a person. “We expect a packed house, exceeding expectations from last year.�

The annual free party in the Atrium features the band All Souled Out. The party in Live signed Seven Stone to provide music. The evening carries a cover of $20, and includes a Champagne toast and two complimentary drinks.

Get Wet ‘n’ Wild with body paint, Party Nerdz on Jan. 9

Turning off the lights always makes things more interesting.

That’s the driving concept behind a special Wet ‘n’ Wild Wednesday at Harrah’s on Jan. 9.

The Party Nerdz — an eclectic group of models, dancers, performers and others — will star in Neon Nights, a Glow-in-the-Dark Body Paint Show. DJ Vito G, Mazz and Paul Desisto will provide the music.

Party Nerdz was created by two “real-life” nerds, Darnell Hicks and Jorge Vergara, in January. With their experience in bartending, nightlife management, and networking as well as their interests in comic books, video games, intellectual reading and corny jokes, the two conceived an event-planning company from left field.

Menu gets fresh update at Casa Di Napoli When Chef Carl Colucci came on board recently as chef at Showboat’s Casa Di Napoli , one of the innovations he brought involved making and drying pasta.

“Chef Carl was at the forefront, driving this,” said Robert Schoell, executive chef at Showboat, who oversees the hotel’s restaurants. “Part of the seasonal change in the menu was to focus on fresh ingredients. A lot of fresh pasta is now on the menu.”

Longtime favorites such as spaghetti and meatballs are made with the fresh pasta. As January approaches, Casa Di Napoli is developing its winter menu.

“We’ve taken off the least popular sellers,” Schoell said, adding that some past specials will be incorporated into the menu.

The menu will feature chicken tortellini with wild mushrooms and a sun-dried tomato pesto. “It’s a little healthier,” Schoell said. “It’s finished not with butter but extra-virgin olive oil, and uses natural chicken broth, so it’s not very heavy.”

The restaurant has increased usage of its wood-burning brick oven. The result is a thin, crispy-crust pizza. Oven-roasted scampi in a garlic herb sauce comes from the brick oven, as does eggplant rollatini.

The restaurant has concentrated on seafood, too, Schoell said. “We have a nice seared branzino, which is a Mediterranean fish.”

The fish is filleted and served with fennel potatoes, capers, olives and tomato broth. Also added is a striped bass with caper and raisin sauce and roasted cauliflower.

Wintertime brings fewer opportunities for regional-grown vegetables.

Mushrooms from Kennett Square, Pa., and broccoli rabe from Hammonton are exceptions. That changes when the weather warms up.

Concerts and cuisine will pump up the party

With four hotels and a country club in its portfolio, Caesars Entertainment Atlantic City will make the most of New Year’s Eve. The countdown to 2013 begins Friday with an assortment of special concerts, food and parties. Caesars, Harrah’s Resort, Showboat and Bally’s will treat partygoers to lavish packages that include VIP concert tickets, premier nightlife, exclusive restaurant menus and deluxe hotel accommodations.

“Atlantic City is always a hotbed for nightlife and entertainment on New Year’s Eve, and this year, more than ever, the Caesars Entertainment venues will have an incredible energy with people looking to celebrate, especially with the events of the past few months,” said Howard S. Weiss, regional director of nightlife operations for Caesars Entertainment’s Eastern Division. “People are looking for some muchneeded respite this year and Atlantic City is without a doubt among the top destinations for New Year’s Eve parties.”

Here are highlights for the weekend: » R&B diva Chaka Khan opens the festivities Friday at the Concert Venue in Harrah’s Resort, where tickets range from $40 to $70. On Saturday night, rockers 3 Doors Down roll into the Circus Maximus Theater in Caesars. Tickets go from $59 to $89. » The Backstreet Boys play a Sunday night gig at the House of Blues in Showboat. Tickets run $59 to $95. Howie Dorough and A.J. Indoor marketplace, boardwalk upgrades and big-name entertainers on tap Unlike this year, 2013 will not bring a new casino. But it will bring a major conversion of portions of Resorts Atlantic City into a Jimmy Buffet-themed playground.

And Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa will celebrate its milestone 10th anniversary.

High-tech gaming will likely come to town in the form of hand-held gambling devices used off the casino floor, and Internet gaming funneled through the Atlantic City casinos.

While no hotels or hotel towers will open, work should move forward on a new conference center at Harrah’s set to open in 2014.

“We’ll also continue to explore ways to get revenue not just through gaming. We have to improve non-gaming amenities every year,” Marrandino said.

Caesars Entertainment will add a major new restaurant in 2013. Marrandino is not ready to divulge details.

“You have to refresh what you offer guests. Las Vegas has a successful formula doing that, and we have to bring it here.”

Caesars Entertainment will welcome names in both boxing and entertainment in 2013. The corporation also will announce the booking of a summer-long entertainment residency similar to those that Elton John and Celine Dion have in Las Vegas, said Don Marrandino, president of Caesars Entertainment’s Eastern division.

“We’re working on real big-name acts,” he said.

In addition, the Donny and Marie show, which spent a week in Atlantic City this past summer, will play for several weeks.

A number of projects spearheaded by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority should debut in 2013. One of the biggies will include an indoor marketplace similar to the Reading Terminal market in Philadelphia. The market is targeted for midtown Atlantic City near The Walk. Caesars Entertainment has pledged a $9.5 million contribution to the construction.

Another element of the Tourism District master plan called for construction of corporate-sponsored one or two story Innovation Pavilions up and down the beach adjacent to the boardwalk.

CRDA teams up with Stockton, Noyes

When the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority released its Tourism District master plan in April 2011, a critical component called for the creation of an Arts District centered around Mississippi Avenue. The street houses both Boardwalk Hall and Dante Hall Theater.

The CRDA earmarked another element by adding 16,000 square feet of retail space geared toward arts-related establishments on the street level of the $30 million Wave parking garage, on Mississippi and Fairmount avenues.

That deal took another step toward fruition this month with a partnership among the CRDA, the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and the Noyes Museum of Art. “We could not ask for better, more qualified partners than Stockton College and the Noyes Museum in developing this cornerstone of Atlantic City’s Arts District,” said CRDA Executive Director John Palmieri. “The success of this district requires the expertise and proven track record and the economic lift this partnership brings.”

CRDA and Stockton College — which also oversees the Noyes Museum — have executed a lease in which the agency will finance the addition of the retail space at a cost of up to $2 million. The Noyes, whose principal location is in Galloway Township, will lease out and manage the project. The plan will include a ceramics studio, gallery space and individual artist studios where local artisans can work.

“The idea is to create an energy on the boardwalk,” said John Palmieri, executive director of the CRDA. The CRDA anticipates building the initial pavilion as a calling card for potential tenants, he said.

“Going forward, corporate tenants would pay rent to operate a pavilion,” Palmieri said.

The CRDA is working on a program to build a new visitor center by the spring.

Also on tap is the repair of the boardwalk and seawall to re-establish the connection of the boardwalk to Historic Gardner’s Basin in the Inlet section of the city.

The construction includes replacing the deteriorated section of boardwalk washed away by superstorm Sandy.

Promoting the city The Atlantic City Alliance introduced the DO AC marketing campaign this year, and all indications point to a successful promotion.

“One area we hope to target in 2013 is a lot more proactive, specific calls to action rather than just pushing a general benefit to visit,” said Alliance President Liza Cartmell.

Among the discussions, Cartmell cited a major sand-sculpture competition, a winter fest on the boardwalk and a beach concert.

The Arts District seeks to create a center for arts downtown.

At Borgata, Nugget For Borgata, 2013 will be all about the 10th birthday. “We are very excited to celebrate such a momentous occasion with our extended customer family and team members,” said Joe Lupo, senior vice president of operations.

At Golden Nugget, 2013 is about building customer loyalty and getting the word out about its brand.

“We want to become the local casino, where people feel comfortable going to,” said Laura Powers, director of marketing for Golden Nugget Atlantic City.

Golden Nugget will add another nightclub as part of a new nightlife concept, she said. “It will be built in the casino, but I’m not sure where,” she said.

The property also expects to create more activities associated with the H20 pool area on the roof, with more special events.

“We’re always looking to expand offerings to consumers,” Powers said.

Dance workshop moves into Convention Center

“These things provide a reason to come to Atlantic City,” she said. “This gives us more tools to enhance visits.”

Another avenue for the Alliance is an upgrade of the website for better mobile use, including faster and more complete trip planning tools.

Students of dance will be front and center at the Atlantic City Convention Center Jan. 5 and 6 as Pulse on Tour returns to Atlantic City.

Pulse features two full days of intense dance workouts for four levels: intermediate, intermediate/advanced, advanced and professional. There is also a class for parents and teachers.

The weekend features the top choreographers and instructors in the industry today. Some of the instructors have been seen on reality television shows such as “So You Think You Can Dance,” “X Factor,” “America’s Got Talent,” “American Idol” and “Glee.” The group also includes pros who have directed music videos for Justin Bieber, The Wanted, Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez; assisted on tours for leading recording artists; and produced and directed movies, commercials, Broadway productions, as well as distinguished dance companies.

Pulse will host a showcase Saturday night at 8 p.m., as well as a fashion show and a $ 30,000 scholarship program.

Dance retailer Nappytabs will sponsor a protégé who will receive free tuition for a year. The scholarships will be awarded on Jan. 6 after the last class.

Among the celebrity dance instructors expected in Atlantic City are Tyce Diorio, Dave Scott and Brooke Lipton. » Emmy-award winner Diorio more than earned a seat on the panel for another season of “So You Think You Can Dance.”

His work can be seen in the film “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” starring Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez. Other movies on his resume include “Showgirls,” “13 going on 30” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” » Scott danced his way into a multi-faceted career in dance, choreography and artist development spanning music, film, television and commercials. Currently, he is working with the high-energy hip-hop group Mindless Behavior.

Projects include “So You Think You Can Dance,” “Step It Up & Dance” and “Step Up 3D.” » Lipton had a successful season as assistant choreographer for the Emmy-nominated TV series “Glee” and with the National Glee Tour. You can see her as a featured dancer in the movie “Rock of Ages.”
