SURF BAR CATERS TO SPORTS FANS Beer towers, nacho platter perfect pair for football Sundays

Equipped with a tap, the towers are geared toward groups who self-serve at the table. Also available for $10 are pitchers of Coors Light made of steel and aluminum, which turn blue when cold just like the cans do. To go along with the group-sized beer, the Surf Bar has come up with a huge $9 nacho platter. “It’s oversize ,” Coppola said. “We thought we needed something to eat developed around groups.” In conjunction with the nacho platter, the bar instituted a halftime nacho challenge. Eat the entire platter by yourself during halftime and the bar not only pays for the platter, but gives out gift bags with T-shirts and concert tickets, among other items. “What’s fun about it is gets people pumped up at halftime. It’s another interesting thing to do.” As of Nov. 6, no one had beaten the challenge. “The platter contains habanera sauce, which is very spicy,” Coppola said. The bar will remain open at least through the Super Bowl. In fact, along with the Mountain Bar at Bally’s, Sammy D’s in Harrah’s Resort and Caesars’ Toga Bar, patrons can enter a text code inside each bar every week for a chance to win a trip to the Super Bowl. The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season. Prior to the trip, the winner can predict the score of the game for a chance to win $100,000 courtesy of Coors and Miller. And after the Super Bowl? “I have a feeling we’ll still be open,” Coppola said.

When Showboat converted its Worship Bar into the Worship Surf Bar earlier this year, the intent was to attract the summer surfing crowd that gathers on the States Avenue beach outside Showboat’s doors. However, the concept proved so successful, the bar couldn’t keep up with demand, said Ryan Coppola, food and beverage operations manager for Showboat. Since the summer, the Worship Surf Bar has built itself as a sort of anti-casino establishment through word of mouth. A Halloween party Oct. 27 with three surf bands drew a couple hundred people, a large part of the lifeguard and beach crowd. “We’re always laid-back,” Coppola said. But did the bar appeal to more than just surfers? “We asked ‘Could we keep it open as a sports scene outlet?’ ” he said. The nine televisions in the bar and the huge screen on the wall that covers two floors seemed to suggest a natural transition. Why not provide a venue with the largest screen in the city and away from the cacophony of slot machines and gamblers? Most of the sports bars associated with casino hotels reside on the casino floor, Coppola said. “We set it up to be one of the best places to watch football,” he said. Working with beer vendors, the surf bar offers giant beer towers from Coors Light and Miller Lite that hold 100 ounces of brew for $18. The Worship Surf Bar at Showboat is proving popular not only with surfers in summer, but with fall football fans. Beer towers are $18. WILLIAM SOKOLIC/COURIER-POST
