GO BACK TO ‘1964’

The Beatles called it quits after fewer than a dozen years. Imagine what it’s like to play in a Beatles tribute band for 28 years.

How do you stop from getting bored performing in “1964 – The Tribute�? It isn’t like the performers can switch parts. “For me, it does not get stale,� said Mark Benson, who plays John Lennon. “We play the best music ever written.� And therein lies the seed for the longevity: The Beatles are still popular, with almost every age group.

The show, a tribute to the Beatles’ early years, plays the Golden Nugget Oct. 27. “Our demographics run from toddler to grandparents. It’s a really good, clean fun show with great rock ‘n’ roll. “We just had a banner year. Even with the economy struggling, people still turn up at the shows. And at almost every show, the band sees new faces. The big picture is the Beatles are still well received,� Benson said in a phone interview.

The Beatles’ legacy also continues as a popular theme on the Las Vegas entertainment scene, with both the Rock Band game and the “Love� Cirque du Soleil show . “None of that hurts,� Benson said. “1964� recreates an early ’60s live Beatles concert, with period instruments, clothing, hairstyles and onstage banter.

The band, which originated in Akron, Ohio, focuses on the years 1963 to 1966, the touring years. The performers studied film and tapes of the Beatles to capture every move.

That’s still quite the song catalogue. Every six months, they change some of the songs. “The biggest challenge is which amazing No. 1 hits we do not do,� Benson said.

Some songs can’t be discarded: “She Loves You� and “A Hard Day’s Night,� for example. “We make sure it’s not stale for the audience. That we get so much repeat business reflects that,� he said.

They also abide by the saying, don’t mess with success.

Our jaws just dropped,� said Mark Benson, who plays John in “1964 – The Tribute� “He still makes suits for us and, when we can’t get back, he sends us origi-

nal bolts of cloth he’s saved from that time period. If we need to modify the suits, we have his patterns to go by.�

The gig is as close to a steady job as you could ask for; 100 to 120 shows a year. That leaves little time for other shows. The bass player does get in some time to work on original music. “But with a schedule of performing one to three days a week, it’s difficult to lock in to anything else.�

In the movie “Here Comes the Boom,” Lenny Clarke plays what IMDB labels Loud Dietrich Fan. He gets into an argument with Salma Hayek’s character.

“We have a verbal battle and she attacks me,” he said in an interview. “It was fun making that movie.”

Clarke has carved out a nice career with small roles in film and larger ones in television. Who can forget his take as Uncle Teddy in fellow Bostonian Denis Leary’s series “Rescue Me”?

But the stand-up portion of his career is what brings him to Borgata Oct. 27.

“I love stand-up because of the instant feedback. If it goes right, it’s the greatest feeling,” he said.

Clarke spent his formative career years in Boston’s comedy circuit, but his real transformation to stand-up took place in an Atlantic City lounge.

“I thought it was a good way to do it,” he said. “The slot machines were going off and this big guy who was in front of me says to me, ‘Nothing you say to me will me laugh. I just lost $35,000.’ I said, Go try to win it back.’ Everyone laughed but him,” Clarke said.

Clarke made his first foray into comedy while working his way through college as a janitor at Cambridge City Hall near Boston. He and his friends went for a beer and lunch at a Chinese restaurant during a comedy show. “My buddies said ‘You’re funnier. You go up there.’ I did and told a couple jokes, and they asked me back.”

Since he’s worked Borgata a number of times, Clarke tries to keep the material fresh. A stand-up for 35 years, he’s changed his approach as he’s gotten older.

“I used to do everything that came into my mind. Now I’m more politically correct, filtering, even during private conversations.”

Indeed, Clarke doesn’t do political stuff. “In this climate, you can’t win. I try and make people laugh and keep everybody happy. If I can take your mind off the economy, I’ve done my job,” he said.

As success grew on the comedy trail, TV beckoned. In the early ’90s, Clarke starred in “Lenny,” a series that aired during the start of the first Gulf War. The war took over a lot of the airtime, he said, and the show fizzled. He also spent years as a featured player on “The John Larroquette Show.”

“I really like TV. You do a sitcom, you have great hours and weekends off.

And if it goes into syndication, I can retire,” he said.

In addition to “Here Comes the Boom,” Clarke appeared in “Southie” and “Fever Pitch,” both films shot in Boston.

He has a couple of TV auditions lined up and is filming an HBO movie with Larry David. “Larry’s even funnier in real life. A nice guy, also,” Clarke said about the man behind “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

If he wasn’t a comedian, Clarke would be a gardener.

“I moved to Martha’s Vineyard where I have lots of trees,” he said. “I find it peaceful. I have an incredible lawn. Three years ago I took care of it all by myself for the entire summer. You have to work it night and day. It takes total dedication.”

GAMING DESTINATIONS & DIVERSIONS Harvest Dinner honors pumpkin When fall rolls around, menus take on a more seasonal taste. With the annual Fall Harvest Wine Dinner at Atlantic City Country Club just five days before Halloween, the taste turns to pumpkin.

Chef Ed Daggers has included a pumpkin lobster bisque as part of the culinary festivities for the evening.

“Chef Daggers has put together a menu fit for the changing leaves and drop in temperature, professionally paired with fine wines,” said Charles Fahy, director of operations at the famous course owned

by Caesars Entertainment.

Said Daggers, “We do cool pairings of wine and food, and with the fall harvest theme, utilize products like apples, pumpkins and game.”

The sit-down dinner and wine tasting also features balsamic and herb roast pheasant with petite tenderloin medallions and wild mushroom and butternut squash wild rice.

Daggers does about six themed dinners a year, including those that feature Italian, Argentinean, Hawaiian, Spanish cuisines and more. “ I have done wine dinners most of my career at golf clubs and resorts and hotels,” said Daggers, a six-year veteran with Caesars Entertainment, who ran his own restaurants and oversaw dining at other resorts from Florida to Pennsylvania.

Each dinner normally offers four to six courses, he said. “The guests have a ball learning about wine and sometimes trying things they might not have tried before,” he said.

Such meals also introduce guests to the golf club and its food and beverage department. “And this keeps it fun and interesting for our culinary team and helps build customer loyalty with new and exciting things. It’s something a little different than just going out to eat,” Daggers said.

The banquet and music kicks off at 4:30 p.m. before the golf game. After the feast, it’s time for golf. The first foursome tees off at 6:30 p.m. in a scramble format. For the novice, each member of the foursome hits from the best lie among the four.

A lighted beverage cart follows along the course to provide refreshments as the game continues. Fahy requests golfers bring only four clubs because the event is golf-cart free.

One Atlantic on the top floor of the Pier Shops at Caesars offers a great backdrop for weddings and other special occasions.

When Brandi Emolo got married, she had the ceremony in her hometown of Williamstown. But she had the reception in Atlantic City, some 30 miles away. The reason for the trek to the Shore was the location for the party: One Atlantic, the event center atop the Pier Shops at Caesars.

“We wanted to have a venue that was not your typical ballroom and we fell in love with the view,” said Emolo.

That would be the view of the beach and boardwalk.

“The view from the cocktail room and the main reception room is just breath-taking and we got very lucky as we had a beautiful day for our wedding,” she said.

“Also, my husband’s family and friends were traveling from North Jersey and we wanted to have our reception at a location

that they could stay and make a weekend out of it,” Emolo said.

“We can configure any of our spaces up to 1,200 guests,” said Elizabeth McGlinn, director at One Atlantic — and not just for weddings, but for bar and bat mitzvahs, family reunions and other milestone events, corporate retreats and holiday parties.

Emolo also liked that One Atlantic only schedules a single event per night. “Some other reception halls have multiple rooms and multiple weddings in one night. Because your event is the only one taking place, they are able to be very attentive to you and all of your guests,” she said.

Her reception included a cocktail hour with butlered hors d’oeuvres and multiple stations of food, followed by a three-

course sit-down dinner.

“All of our guests still rave about how excellent the food was,” Emolo said. “We were also able to book a cigar roller, which went over very well.”

The spilled pasta on Emolo’s dress did not go over very well with the bride.

“But within minutes they came back with a Tide pen and got the stain out. They also made sure both of our families and bridal party were taken care of the entire night,” Emolo said.

Indeed, McGlinn says One Atlantic is a one-stop shop that can handle all aspects of an event, Tide pen included.

Like the Emolo wedding, guests can stay in Atlantic City as a destination.

seeing events on Wednesday and Thursday night to take advantage of mid-week rates,” McGlinn said.

One Atlantic does more than host parties in town. They come to you as well, whether a wedding, holiday party or corporate event, McGlinn said.

“Off-premises is still in its infancy. We do 90 percent on-site. But that is changing.

Next year at this time the percentage will be different,” she said.

Another avenue they take is to replicate family recipes for event menus.

“We are known for customization. The foods are prepped on the day of the event.

The blending of tradition makes our events unique that way.”

It began life as a private men’s club with the Commodore, Louis Kuehnle, as one of its founding members. Kuehnle served as the power broker of Atlantic City in that era, mentoring Nucky Johnson, the inspiration behind Nucky Thompson on the HBO hit “Boardwalk Empire.” The Knife & Fork went on to become one of the most iconic restaurants in Atlantic City.

This month it celebrates its 100th anniversary. How many restaurants can claim that longevity?

Such a lifetime is due to a combination of factors, said Maureen Shay, whose family owns the restaurant at the juncture of Albany, Atlantic and Pacific avenues. “It’s a very unique building. A unique structure (Flemish architecture, for example). It’s been the place to go for so long, it’s got the kind of history people are interested in now.”

The recent restaurant renaissance in Atlantic City has helped keep the flame burning, Shay said.

“Fifteen years ago people had fewer choices for a high-end restaurant,” Shay said. “Now it’s more of a focus. The city draws a lot more people interested in going out for a nice dinner. The more Atlantic City is known as a dining destination, the more traffic for everybody.”

The new owners, the Dougherty family — proprietors of Dock’s Oyster House — took over seven years ago with an eye on bringing the Knife & Fork back to its glory to take advantage of the foodie focus. The menu changed somewhat. The steakhouse aspect increased with more options.

“But we kept a lot of the emphasis on high-quality seafood,” she said. And the restaurant retained the famous lobster thermidor, a signature dish from way back.

The restaurant has dining areas on two floors, and if needed the third floor, which serves as the wine room. From the second floor, the windows look out over the ocean.

But the handful of tables on the terrace on the first floor remain the most requested location.

The restaurant received a mention in the first season of “Boardwalk Empire.” In actuality, the restaurant has connections to the real-life characters on which the series is based. Nucky Johnson, the inspira-

During Prohibition, club members defied the laws and continued to openly serve liquor. The club survived without being

raided for some time, perhaps due to the influence of Johnson, the reigning political boss and Knife & Fork regular. Eventually, federal agents destroyed all of its contents.

The Dougherty family has overhauled the Knife & Fork.

Renovations include mahogany millwork, hand-painted ceilings, sweeping staircase and dining rooms. The vaulted ceiling of the Main Dining Room was restored. A Prohibition-era mural replaces an old service station and dumbwaiter. The downstairs bar was refurbished and moved to the main dining room .

The Ladies’ Dining Lounge, while open to all, is a nod to the early years when ladies had to dine in a side room.

After the raid, the club’s membership declined and in 1927 the building was sold to the Latz family. Convinced Prohibition was here to stay, the family removed the bar and converted the building into a public restaurant. During the Depression, Milton and Evelyn Latz moved the family into the third and fourth floors, where they lived for decades.

Milton and Evelyn successfully managed the Knife & Fork until Milton died in 1948. Their sons Mack and Jim took over and redefined the business through the post-war decades, surviving the advent of gambling in Atlantic City.

Over the years, the Knife & Fork became a favorite of politicians, wealthy vacationers and Hollywood celebrities including Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and Vic Damone. In a famous scene from the movie “Atlantic City,” Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon dined in the restaurant’s popular porch, now known as the Terrace.

In 1985, Mack bought out his brother, becoming the sole owner for more than a decade. As Mack approached 80, he retired. Unable to find a buyer, it closed in 1997. Two years later, Mack’s son Andrew leased the restaurant, reopening in1999. In 2005, Mack sold the restaurant to the Dougherty family.

From the Chart House restaurant above the back bay in the Golden Nugget, folks can catch sight of the Absecon Lighthouse a mile away.

That view is one reason the Lighthouse staff is holding its annual Luscious Libations fundraiser for educational programs at the Chart House on Oct. 25. Past restaurants — the Knife & Fork, Steve & Cookie’s and Sofia — provided a great atmosphere, but none with a view like this, said Jean Muchanic, executive director of the Absecon Lighthouse.

“The views of Atlantic City are spectacular. Within that view, you can see the lighthouse. People will enjoy seeing the lighthouse within the skyline in Atlantic City and see how the historic structure fits into the skyline. You get a greater appreciation of how history has a place in modern Atlantic City.”

And they’ll get to see the light turned on.

In addition to the skyline, attendees can enjoy hors d’oeuvres, a champagne toast and the song stylings of Shawn Ashley.

“This is our signature event of the year,” Muchanic said.

Jewel cherishes her mom time, role in skating show

These days, Jewel relishes her position in life. She tours less and stays home more, so she gets to spend more time with her son, Kase.

“I want to give myself time to be a mom,” she said in a phone interview from the ranch she shares in Stephensville, Texas, with her husband, world champion bullriding superstar Ty Murray.

Being Mommy has expanded her artistic horizons. She’s written a children’s book and recorded two children’s albums at her home studio.

To go along with the family vibe, Jewel will perform Nov. 3 at Musselman’s Apple Sauce Family Skating Tribute at Boardwalk Hall, presented by Caesars Atlantic City.

“I’m excited, even though I never had time for skating myself,” said the fourtime Grammy nominee. “It’s a family show, so I’m happy to be part of it.”

In addition to songs from her kiddie albums, Jewel will also do some hits as well, such as “Foolish Games.”

Jewel’s first independent children’s album, “Lullaby,” was a partnership with Fisher-Price and Somerset Entertainment.

Produced by Jewel and recorded at her home studio, the album sold more than 350,000 copies. The 15-track album features 10 self-penned songs and a few standards including “Over the Rainbow” and “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”

Her second album with Fisher-Price and Somerset Entertainment was “The Merry Goes Round.” She wrote the songs while pregnant, with her unborn son serving as inspiration. It features some 15 songs, among them classics such as “The Green Grass Grows All Around” and “My Favorite Things,” plus Jewel originals.

Last month, she released a picture book and CD “That’s What I’d Do,” based on songs from “The Merry Goes Round.”

“These are gifts for my son, my gifts of writing and singing. I want to show how loved he is, how I feel about him,” Jewel said. She also sees this as a learning aid.

“Kids are mesmerized by words at a young age, so I hope this spark’s my son’s imagination,” she said.

“I grew up listening to all kinds of music. Dixieland, classic American song books, blues, a little rock, it runs the gamut. What I write reflects that,” said the singer, who is a fan of Cole Porter and Ella Fitzgerald.

She credits Bob Dylan and Neil Young for her initial success when she opened for each of these icons.

“I worked with them at a critical time in my career and both encouraged me to take risks. My first record was considered a

failure. I was supposed to go in and do a second album. Dylan went over the lyrics for me. He took an interest in me,” she said.

Jewel did the second album as the first one took off. “Then I went out with Neil Young. I tried to change my style for a radio hit. He said don’t change a thing.

Do what you do and if you never have a hit, so be it.”

The singer is amazed how far “I’ve gotten on very sincere lyrics. I always enjoyed writing.”
