Dealers will offer furniture, toys, dolls, art, advertising, vintage fashions, art deco, lighting, jewelry and memorabilia of all types. Doll and toy specialist Dorothy Hunt, from Sweetbriar Auctions, brings 22 years experience to the team, and William Bunch from Bill Bunch Auctions & Appraisals, appraises art glass, rugs, Civil War relics, books, manuscripts, silver, maps and prints. Appraisals cost $5 a person. “Dating objects is the first step in guaranteeing merchandise,” Roberts said. “Value is Coca-Cola and soda pop antiques, advertising and related items. Roseville, Weller and Rookwood pottery will be well represented by Barbara Gerr Antiques, and Twin Tankard Antiques will feature one of the largest inventories of 16th- to 18th-century European pewter in the county. Michael Federovsky from Imperial Heritage specializes in pre-Revolutionary Russian items and carries Russian icons, silver, jewelry, enamels, and objets d’art from the Imperial Russian period. Satsuma and other fine Japanese ceramics including Imari, Kutani and Sumida can be found in the booth of Marvin Baer from Ridgewood. “We like the Limoges that was sent over as white ware and was hand painted by American hobbyists as a proper lady’s pastime,” said dealer Robert Brandow. Gem de la Gem from Teaneck will display signed estate jewelry focused on unusual pieces including a spectacular Gucci diamond-and-ruby bangle bracelet. “Honesty, integrity, reputation, and ethics are important components in all of our shows,” said Allison Kohler, director of JMK Shows. “We want our customers to know that Atlantic City is one of the best places to buy.”

Given the ranking, Temple seems the odds-on favorite to win the conference’s men’s basketball championship tournament at Boardwalk Hall March 9 to 11. This is the sixth year the tournament has been played in Atlantic City. The 14-school conference also includes Philadelphia’s Saint Joseph’s University and La Salle University, which are both having goo dseasons. The top 12 teams at the conclusion of the regular season will qualify for the tournament. First-round games will be played March 6 on the campuses of teams seeded Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 8. With eight schools remaining after that, the setting shifts to Boardwalk Hall to determine who gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Burlesque Nightclub to open at Revel Show-biz vet Ivan Kane brings elaborate acts to A.C. By WILLIAM SOKOLIC Courier-Post Staff
As part of its entertainment mix, Revel will go burlesque. Ivan Kane’s Royal Jelly Burlesque Nightclub will open April 2 for the resort’s soft launch. The nightspot takes its cues from Kane’s renowned Forty Deuce clubs in Hollywood and Las Vegas. As a show-business veteran and entrepreneur who set the standard for modern burlesque, Kane will stage a nightly experience with dancers performing choreographed routines before a live band. The troupe can range from five to 15 dancers. “‘Nightlife as art’ is the principle that drives Ivan Kane’s Royal Jelly Burlesque Nightclub,” Kane said in a release. “The burlesque acts are extremely technical and highly produced with the best classically trained dancers and musicians from Hollywood, Las Vegas and New York.” Designers put together a nightclub in the round. Flying catwalks drop from the sky and animate the space. Dancing begins at 10 p.m. with burlesque shows throughout the night. At 2 a.m. the tempo shifts to afterhours rock ’n’ roll burlesque.

As a bonus, the dancers will share some of their secrets in burlesque lessons on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Kane’s burlesque clubs attract a who’s who of entertainment, including Carmen Electra, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Paris Hilton, Sting, David Bowie and Mick Jagger, just to drop a few names.

Saw Doctors take cover
Band will play originals, riff on favorites at Borgata
Covering “Downtown” was not really on the Saw Doctors’ radar. But the band has a habit of throwing in cover excerpts at the end of its tunes during a concert. In New Jersey, for instance, the Saw Doctors would do “Cadillac Ranch” or “Atlantic City” as an homage to Bruce Springsteen. So look for “Atlantic City” when the band plays at the Borgata March 17. “We had no reason, but we did ‘Downtown,’ ” said guitarist Leo Moran in a phone interview last week. And then they “put it in our pocket,” he said, for a possible single for Christmas. What brought it out of the pocket was a discussion between the band’s producer and the manager of the original singer, Petula Clark, about adding her voice to the song. The result was a video Clark and the Saw Doctors shot in Galway, Ireland and Paris. “We were faithful to the original. It’s hard to improve on the song, but we did a different tempo this time. We have great admiration for composer Tony Hatch,” Moran said. The Saw Doctors might not have time for a trip “Downtown” when they play at the Borgata. About half the two-hour-plus show will be devoted to the band’s new album, “The Further Adventures of The Saw Doctors,” to be released March 13 in the U.S. The band’s seventh studio album, “What,” shows influences of U2 and Springsteen, among others, on songs such as “Friday Town” and “Takin’ the Train.” “We steal from the ones we like the best,” Moran quipped. That influence could explain why the Saw Doctors will play The Stone Pony in Asbury Park on March 15. It’s the third year in a row the band will play at one of Springsteen’s favorite haunts. Moran hopes that this time, Bruce shows up unannounced — as he is occasionally known to do. “The first two times, we saw no sign of

» The name comes from itinerant craftsmen who once traveled from sawmill to sawmill sharpening and repairing saws. » The Saw Doctors have had to deal with a lot of personnel changes over the years, guitarist Leo Moran said. “Being in the band is like being in one crisis after the next. You get used to handling crises. Someone leaves you lose something good but you gain something good,” he said. » Moran expects little from the upcoming American release of “The Further Adventures of The Saw Doctors.’’ “The CD is almost obsolete. Downloading does not make a difference to us. We have not sold a lot of CDs in a long time.”
him. We came all the way over across the Atlantic and he wouldn’t come down the road to see us. We’ll see him in Dublin in July, so it would be nice to see him repay us,” Moran said. Other artists have left their mark on the Saw Doctors, such as The Ramones and The Clash. Moran and band mate Davy Carton were teenagers when the punk thing was huge. “We’d take up instruments but were not
good playing them on stage.” Over the years, country artists such as Randy Travis and Dwight Yoakam also inspired the band. In addition to the material from the new album, the band will trot out old favorites such as “I Useta Love Her” and the hilarious ditty, “I’d Love to Kiss the Bangles.” “There’ll be variety in it,” Moran said. “We’ve been at it quite a while since 1991, when we made our first studio album.”

See the band March 10 Filter is not for the faint of heart. The band scored big in 1995 with the corrosive industrial music of “Short Bus,” an album featuring the hit single “Hey Man, Nice Shot.” Over the next 15 years, the band released four other equally raucous albums, the last “The Trouble with Angels” in 2010. Fans can hear songs from all the albums March10 in the cozy — and free — confines of the Party Pit in the House of Blues Casino at Showboat Atlantic City. Things” are as excited to make their debut performance at Showboat as their fans are. “We are absolutely ready to come ‘filterize’ the Party Pit!! Bring your A game!” said front man Richard Patrick. Guitarist Jonny Radtke is looking forward to playing the House of Blues in Atlantic City for the first time. “Get to rock Atlantic City … it’s been a while,” added bassist Phil Buckman, while drummer Mika Fineo expects to see family and friends. The House of Blues Casino Party Pit is known as a high-energy gaming and entertainment venue, hosting some of the hottest cover bands and DJs in the region, as well as the 2012 Bombshell Calendar Girls.
