Music has long been Izabela Adams’ chosen song. Her passion took root as a child when she began elementary musical school in her native Poland. She later studied piano, music theory and singing. Classically trained, she taught music in public schools and traveled the world as a full-time musician, perfecting her pitch even further. Fifteen years ago, Adams immigrated to the United States – where she hoped to spread her musical wings. Izabela, 40, is co-owner with her musician husband, Tom Adams, of The Voice Studios at 6 East Main Street in Maple Shade. Formerly on Route 38 and called Adams Music Conservatory, the new location opened December 1. Adams gives singing lessons to students age seven through adults – those in it for the pure joy, others with grander aspirations. Tom, a Pennsauken native, teaches drums at the school. The Maple Shade residents have two sons. And they both love music, says their parents. Mark, 9, plays piano; Julian, 3 ½, is taking violin lessons. The new name reflects the evolution of the school, says Izabela. Previously, numerous types of instrumental lessons were offered as well as the vocal coaching. “We noticed that our voice lessons had been the most successful,” she said. Lessons will continue in piano, guitar and drums. “Everyone can learn how to sing,” said Izabela, who also teaches students (via Skype) in Canada, Poland and Germany. Admittedly, she says, nature plays a part in such musical gifts, but working hard and exercising one’s larynx are key components to reaching full potential. Izabela has the unique distinction of being the first certified Speech Level Singing (SLS) teacher in the Delaware Valley. Renowned Hollywood vocal coach, Seth Riggs, who invented the technique, trained her. “His students have included Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder and many others,” she said. “He’s very selective; it took

me three years of intensive studying to earn the certification.” It’s something in which Izabela is particularly proud. “We do a lot of competitions in the tri-state area,” she said. Her students typically place in the top five. Caroline Milstead, 13, of Moorestown, whose voice has been described as jazzy/ bluesy, won a recent competition. According to her mother, Nicole Milstead: “She’s now exposed to a higher level of singing and has a desire to be more than an occasional singer. It’s been eye-opening how much really goes into being a good singer. It’s very demanding; there’s a rigor and discipline most people don’t realize. I’m impressed with Izabela’s knowledge, dedication, sophistication and understanding of voice.” According to Izabela: “Music is just another language, a perfect way of expression.” She compares her training to that of an athlete. “If you’re an athlete, you want to develop nice biceps, so you go to the gym. There are a lot of muscles involved in sound production. They have to be exercised in a certain way.” Adams loves the new space and the Main Street location. “The vocal room is larger,” she said. “It will allow me to do open mikes and hold recitals.”

Tom and Izabela Adams, co-owners of The Voice Studios, recently moved to their new location at 6 E. Main Street in Maple Shade. The studio was formerly located on Route 38.

How the police handle missing persons The holidays are a time to enjoy family and friends. But for some, the holidays are a sad time to remember a loved one who has gone missing. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System reports that there are 18,594 missing person cases across the country, and that there are 386 cases in New Jersey. The recent investigation into the missing college student Shane Montgomery in Pennsylvania shows the hardship a family goes through. These days, police utilize advance technology to locate missing persons. The NCIC database was created in 1967. In the mid-1990s, the program went through an upgrade from the legacy system to the current NCIC 2000 system. NCIC 2000 is a web-based system that is much easier to use and allows for pictures to be attached to the entries. Within the last 10 years Maple Shade Police Department installed a workstation that allows us to send and receive missing persons posters to agencies all over the state. MAC card and credit card transactions,

cell phones, EZPASS transponders, ON STAR, entries on social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, are newer technologies that allow us to use technology to help track missing persons. We do not always have easy access to such information or good cooperation with the private industries that control these technologies. The state police have an electronic surveillance unit with a high-tech van worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even with all of their cell phone tracking equipment, depending on the situation, some times we have to obtain court orders or search warrants before they are allowed to use their equipment to help us track someone. The cell companies will generally provide us what we need for a missing persons case that is exigent if the subject is endangered, and there is no crime suspected. As is often the case in police work, as we adapt to a technology and learn to use it as a tool, people learn to use it against us or sidestep the technology. We had a case where a girl threw her cell phone away, which

we found, knowing that we could track her by it. And another that knew to keep her phone powered off, and would only turn it on to check messages quickly or make an outgoing call and then power it back down. The University of North Texas will do Mitochondrial DNA analysis for us. Mitochondrial DNA is maternally inherited. Buccal swap samples are taken from family members from the victim’s maternal line. The state police employ a full-time forensic anthropologist, Donna Fontana, to examine and help determine the identity of unidentified bodies. Her training and expertise is beyond that of most County Medical Examiners. Her office also now has a forensic odontologist come in on a part time basis. New Jersey State Police Missing Persons unit will provide manpower and resources as needed and requested and will provide air support as needed.

Maple Shade continues to attract new businesses with more expected in the New Year Similar to other municipalities throughout the nation, Maple Shade has experienced economic growth and loss. We lost Charlie Brown’s, which had been a mainstay for decades. There have been other business closures and one too many home foreclosures. Despite these unfortunate incidents, I would assert that over that past year Maple Shade has done much better than many other cities and towns. I base this statement on the fact the new businesses that will open in 2014 and 2015 will bring hundreds of new jobs. These new businesses include the Skyzone, a 24-hour animal care facility, a new Wawa, a CarMax, a new furniture store, a new grocery store, and an art studio and music development facility both on Main Street. Also, PJ Whelihan’s is expanding its existing facility. With respect to housing development, new homes are proposed and have been constructed on a number of streets around the Township. The Township opened the new football and soccer field at the Woodlawn Sports Complex. The Township applied for and was awarded a $125,000 grant from Burlington County to significantly enhance

the Gazebo Park. Other successful endeavors included the fact that the United States Para-Olympics Team passed through Maple Shade as well as Vice President Joseph Biden. We will always have ups and downs as a municipality. I strongly contend that because Maple Shade is such a resilient and hard-working community that we will weather the storms and downturns that we will confront. A stunning example of this Township’s resiliency is the massive fire that recently occurred at South Jersey Mowers. Just in case you have not noticed, they are now open for business! Township staff is preparing the 2015 Budget for review and consideration by Council. With the adoption of that Budget in 2015 and continued efforts of our energetic staff, we plan to implement programs and initiatives that will further compliment Maple Shade.

from above. The cameras are between $130 and $500. The mounts and accessories range from $10 to $2500. Looking for a tablet for under the tree this year? There are hundreds of options available, with prices varying. First, identify who will be using the tablet. If it primarily will be used by children, I would recommend the Nabi line. They have tablets specifically designed for kids aged 2 to 14 with built-in parental controls. Looking for a “family” tablet that will be used by everyone? Consider the Kurio 7s. Shopping tablets for teenagers to adults and not sure if you should go Android or Apple? Go with the type smartphone they already use. If they carry an iPhone, then look at Apple’s line of iPads. The prices range from $250 to $830 depending on screen size and capability. Head over to the Apple Store or Apple.com to shop. If the user is on an Android device, I would recommend sticking to the brand of phone they have. Once you identify the brand, shop within the brand for the tablet. Samsung and Asus are popular options. One thing to consider is making sure that you include a gift receipt. Do not get offended if the gadget gets swapped for a different option. We geeks could give you plenty of good reasons for exchanging devices, but the explanation would likely put you to sleep. We do commend you for trying. If all else fails, consider a gift card. Favorite stores of the tech minded are Micro Center, Best Buy and Newegg.com. Thank you for reading and have a happy and safe holiday.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are past. That doesn’t mean all your holiday shopping is done. Do you need a last-minute tech gift idea? Drones all day long. These are radio controlled flying devices that any tech person would love to receive as a gift. The prices range from $50 to $1000’s. Why the big price range? Recreational drones are made of cheap plastic or Styrofoam and have a short range. The more expensive drones have built in GPS, cameras, and can mount high-end cameras for aerial shots. Head over to Amazon.com for a good place to start shopping and read reviews. Google Chromecast is $35. Looking to spend around $100? Hands down, Roku 3 or an Apple TV would be on the top of the list. These devices turn your TV in to a streaming media player for movies, TV shows, music, and more. The two devices are great, but the Roku 3 has more bang for the buck. If you know the person is an Apple Fanatic, go with the Apple TV. If you want to upgrade the gift, throw in a gift subscription to Netflix or Hulu PLUS. Both services are $8 per month. If you have an unlimited budget, or just hit the lottery, these are the gifts I would recommend. Game Systems: If the person already owns an older system, go with the upgraded model. For example, if the person has a Microsoft Xbox, then go with the Microsoft One. Likewise, if they have a PlayStation 3, then naturally, you would want to get them the PlayStation 4. If you have a techie who’s also an adrenalin junky, get them a GoPro HERO. These incredibly versatile and powerful cameras, have mounts and accessories to capture nearly any activity. From diving with sharks to skydiving or anything in between, memories can be captured. You can also strap the things to a drone and see the world
