Shop smart and stay safe this holiday season 5. Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. An enterprising thief would love to shoulder surf to get your account information. 6. Deter pickpockets. Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket. 7. Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in. 8. Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk or, if possible, take them directly home. 9. Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. The same applies if you are using mass transit. 10. If you are shopping with children, make a plan in case you get separated. Select a central meeting place and make sure they know they can ask mall personnel or store security employees if they need help.

This year many shoppers will be out early to find those big bargains on Black Friday or online for Cyber Monday, but the criminals will be out too. The Maple Shade Police Department advises residents to have a personal safety and security plan to keep from seeing red this holiday season and to keep criminals at bay. They advise after shopping and filling your car with gifts and goods you head straight home and unload them. They advise against stopping at a second mall or store, or for bite to eat or a drink because doing so could invite would-be thieves. Here are 10 great tips to help you shop safely while getting those great holiday bargains throughout the shopping season. 1. Do not buy more than you can carry. Plan ahead by taking a friend with you or ask a store employee to help you carry your packages to the car. 2. Shop online with companies you know and trust. Check a company’s background if you are not familiar with it. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. 3. Save all receipts. Print and save all confirmations from your online purchases Start a file folder to keep all receipts together and to help you verify credit card or bank statements as they come in. 4. Consider alternate options to pay for your merchandise, such as onetime or multiuse disposable credit cards or money orders, at online stores and auction sites.

For shoppers who shop online, keep safety in mind by signing up for phone apps from USPS, Fed Ex and UPS that will let you know exactly what day your packages will arrive and then send an alert to you when the driver delivers them. This to help you combat package theft, you can either get home and get your package or arrange for a friend to come get them before the thieves do. Let the Magic Begin…

MAPLE SHADE

Did you know your smartphone could do this?

Holiday Lights

Redial the last number. Just browse to the phone app and tap the call button twice. Built in personified voice assistance. Helpful when you need to send a quick text message, add a calendar event or reminder, get driving directions, or get the score. To activate Apple’s Siri, press and hold the Home button. On Android phones, to activate Google Now, swipe up at the bottom of the screen or tap the mic icon on the search bar. To find out what other cool things you can do, activate the voice assistant, and ask for “Help”. As a bonus tip, you can now wake up Siri and Google Now hands free. The device must be plugged in to a power source. To enable Allow “Hey Siri” under Settings > General > Siri. “OK Google” can be enable by touching Menu > Settings > Voice, then “Ok Google” detection. See text easier. As we get older, it is harder to read small text. You can enlarge the text; on Apple launch the Settings app from the Home screen, Tap on General > Accessibility > Large Text option. On Android, tap Apps > Settings > Display > Font Size > Large (or Huge). Use voice to type. I have trouble tapping the virtual keys on the keyboard. To make it easier, I flip the phone horizontally to increase the size of the keyboard. A better option is to speak into the mic icon on the keyboard. Your voice will be transcribed and your words will appear. This works anywhere you can type text.

Today, we use smartphones for everything. We use them daily to remind us of events, get directions, communicate via email/text/social media, and look up information. So it’s important to know about the most popular smartphone operating systems – Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android (Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc.). Please be aware that some features are limited by the hardware and software versions. Don’t be discouraged if you cannot figure out why something is not working. If you need assistance, ask a tech for help at the store where you purchased your phone. Here are 6 tips and tricks to help you. Read things out loud. Have a long email or web page that you need to read? Try using the phone’s built in text to speech, a feature buried in iOS under the Settings page, select General > Accessibility, then turn on Speak Selection. Once enabled, you can select any text and choose “Speak” from the pop-up menu. Android requires you do download a third-party app. Check out “Easy Text To Speech” from the Google Play store. Block Calls or Texts. Your old boyfriend keeps texting and calling? Getting a call from an unwanted number? A local pizza joint is SPAM’ing you with lunch specials? Try this. For blocking voice or video calls on an Apple device, go to Settings > Phone or FaceTime > Blocked > Add. To block iMessage Settings > Messages > Blocked > Add. To block callers on Android devices, choose Settings > Call > Call Rejection > Auto Reject List > Create. From there, you can build your list. Blocking messages can be done by adding the message sender to the Spammer List. This is done by going to the message and holding down on their message until the menu pops up and hit “add to spam numbers”.

Enjoy old fashioned holiday fun.

Holiday Festival

Shade Bucks are gift solution

Traditions are what the holiday season are all about! The 18th Annual Holiday Festival is a tradition that should be carried on by all in our community. If you have never attended, then this is the year to begin this tradition. Meet your family and friends on our very own Main St. for laughter and holiday cheer. Friday, December 5 at 6 p.m. will be the kick off. Santa will come downtown as the highlight of the Christmas Parade to Gazebo Park where he will ceremoniously light the Christmas tree for the first time this holiday season. Be sure to stop by the Post Office and enjoy performances by many of our local choirs. Stop in the gazebo for a visit with Santa. Be sure to bring your camera as you will want to catch the look on your special child’s face as they see Santa for the first time this year. Watch as the kids bounce their energy away in the House of Bounce. Head west on Main St. to catch a glimpse of Santa’s reindeer as they rest up for their travel back to the North Pole. Don’t forget to take the kiddies down to Performance Plus for a ride on a pony. Stay and stroll Main St. The shops will be open and ready for your holiday needs and specialty vendors will line the street. There will be many surprises for both young and old alike. By Helen Iapalucci, Executive Director Main Street Maple Shade, Inc.

IF YOU GO 18th Annual Holiday Festival kicks off at 6 pm tonight.

Lifelong Maple Shade resident honored for his works and devotion to town

Judy and Bob Ries (sitting) with their two daughters and their husbands at the luncheon.

On November 11th at a regularly scheduled Maple Shade Rotary Club meeting, lifelong resident Bob Ries and his wife Judy were honored for their remarkable lifetime volunteerism dedicated to Maple Shade. The Maple Shade Advisory Board of Commerce, Maple Shade Rotary Club, Maple Shade Business Association and Main Street Maple Shade organizations joined together to celebrate this special couple during the Rotary Luncheon. All in attendance enjoyed a delicious lunch and listened to the presentations made by Nelson Wiest, Henry Gosik and Michael Bollinger as they recalled past memories of Bob and Judy volunteering at local events, such as the Pancake Breakfast and the

The value of a home inspection When you buy a new home it is built in the Agreement of Sale, that you have the right to have a Home Inspection within a certain time period. The price for this inspection is approximately $400-$500, and I highly recommend that you have this inspection. An inspection will point out issues that we cannot always see. Included in this inspection is Electrical, Plumbing, Heating, Roof and Windows. If you hire a Home Inspector you can avoid expenses later on. If there is something wrong with the electrical system, the Home Inspector will recommend you to have an electrician look at and fix the problem, the same with plumbing problems, call in a plumber! If a plumber or electrician discover flaws, you can ask the Seller to repair these issues prior to settlement. According to your agreement, all major system are supposed to be in working order, but the systems can be old and still be working well. As long as the systems work, you cannot ask for replacement. A roof may be old, but if it not leaking it is considered to be “in working order. The biggest problem with housing today is MOLD, a Home Inspector is not a mold expert, but he will warn

in this field can remediate this prior to settlement. The same goes for Radon, which is a gas that can come up from a sump pump, and it is normally measured in the basement (with basement windows closed). If the reading is higher than 4.0, you can ask for remediation prior to closing. Remediation is normally paid for by the Seller. The most important issue is that you understand your Agreement of Sale, and that you are aware of all time frames! Be smart and ask the Seller to pay for and provide you with a Home Warranty, which will protect you for any costly repairs during the first year in your new home!
