Maple Shade High School students take active role in saving environment The 22 students in Carmen Lynn’s Environmental Science class at Maple Shade High School were presented with a real-world challenge; how recycling can save energy and wildlife. All embraced the challenge. Lynn, who teaches Biology and Environmental Science and coaches Girls Lacrosse at the school had read about the Philadelphia Zoo’s Albert M. Greenfield “UNLESS” contest and was inspired to introduce it to her class. The annual contest partners with 200 Delaware Valley schools to show how recycling can save energy and wildlife. Lynn thought “UNLESS” would be an ideal way for students to have a positive, hands-on impact — in school, at home and throughout Maple Shade. “The contest is to encourage students to ‘rethink recycling’ and how wildlife is affected by recycling,” she said. “It is the students’ responsibility to make the community aware of the different ways that recycling can have an impact. It can, in fact, save wildlife.” An ongoing project in the class focuses on sustainability and how to resolve critical issues, like recycling and running out of fossil fuel. Lynn emphasized to students one of the major themes of “UNLESS,” “If we don’t recycle, we will destroy habitats and species.” She says that each year, the zoo’s contest takes on a different scope. “This year is about ‘saving the gorilla.’” Lynn finds the contest a perfect way to meld the state’s core curriculum requirements with real-world activities. She’s required to teach certain topics, such as populations, sustainability, environmental issues, land pollution and recycling. Rather than just lecture students (mostly juniors and seniors) and test them, Lynn has been integrating the lessons of “UNLESS” with her coursework.
Beginning in early October, students broke into small groups and brainstormed ways to promote and educate the community about recycling. As a result, the student’s work will appear in an upcoming issue of My Maple Shade, a supplement to the Courier-Post. They also devised and distributed surveys to all high school and middle school students (about 853 in total). Through the surveys, they hope to get a pulse on what types of recycling are under way and what areas might be lacking. They also plan to design and hang posters in the hallways and create a short educational video to be aired on the school’s television station. “The students like the idea that they can pick and choose what they’ll do,” said Lynn. “They’ve actually had the opportunity to make a change. They seem very into it.” She attributes much of this to the fact that they are personal stakeholders in the projects and understand that recycling or not recycling has a direct impact on the earth.
Carmen Lynn’s Environmental Science class at Maple Shade High School are rethinking recycling.
As a result of what they’ve learned, students are planning to take leftover food waste from the cafeteria and set up a compost on school grounds. They also hope to establish a compost area somewhere in Maple Shade, so community members can participate. Lynn is extremely pleased with the passion and commitment her students have demonstrated. “They are willing to go above and beyond,” she said. Jan L. Apple is a freelance writer for My Maple Shade. Before you fall in love with a home, make sure you can afford it
T
his is the time to buy a new home, prices are down and interest rates are low; approximately 4%! However interest rates are connected to your credit score, so if you are thinking about buying a new home, the first thing you should do is contact your bank or a local mortgage solicitor to find out what your credit score is, and a mortgage consultant will also be able to tell you how much they will lend you AND how much money you will have to come up with out of pocket. Do not rely on quotes from internet sites, we in the Real Estate Industry have seen too often rates that are quoted on the internet are so called “come on rates. Go local, and trust your mortgage consultant. When you deal with a local lender, you can see them in their office, and easily deliver papers needed for your mortgage. If you already have a Realtor, trust their suggestions, a Realtor will usually recommend lenders that they have worked with before, and know that they can trust to get you to your goal – getting your new home, in a timely manner and without unnecessary hassle. There are several different kinds of mortgages: If
Welcome To
you are a Veteran, you can get a mortgage without any money down! This is called a VA mortgage. Then we have FHA mortgages, but FHA demands that you have 3% (of sale price) to put down. In addition there is a MIP (mortgage insurance premium) to pay, part to be paid at closing and the rest will be put into your mortgage and will be paid monthly. The best thing with an FHA loan is that you can ask the Seller to pay up to 6% toward closing cost! Lastly, there is Conventional Mortgages, the minimum is 5% down payment, and with a conventional mortgage you can ask the Seller to pay up to 3% towards your closing cost. Just as with
“MAPLE WALK
an FHA loan there is an insurance premium to pay (Private Mortgage Insurance). A mortgage consultant will be able to choose the right mortgage for you. In addition to the mortgages mentioned above, there are local banks that have Community Mortgages to offer, but the conditions may vary from bank to bank. These mortgages are meant to benefit both the local town and the Buyers and should be looked into as well. If you are looking for a new home, see your local Realtor or bank to make sure that you are pre-qualified prior to starting your house hunting, that way you will not look at homes that you fall in love with, but find out later that you do not qualify for the mortgage you need to buy the home. A Realtor will work with you step by step in finding you a home, and will explain all aspects of buying a new home. Buying a home is the biggest investment we make, so make sure you are comfortable with the people you are working with! ‘Above the Influence’ program a success in Maple Shade These are tough times for the youth of our community. They face pressures every day from pleasing their friends to not disappointing their parents and teachers. They want to be a part of the “in” crowd. And, in doing so, it isn’t always easy to make the right choices. But, the hardest choice of all it seems is being true to themselves. To that end, the Maple Shade Community Alliance is sponsoring “Above the Influence” a media campaign in its eighth year that has been well researched and has shown to make a great impact on our youth. Here in Maple Shade, students in grades fourth through sixth created posters to show the importance of being alcohol, tobacco and drug free. Mrs. Terry Klaw, art teacher at both Maude Wilkins and Steinhauer schools, kicked off the project in her art classes. The posters were submitted to the Burlington County Office of Human Services and the winning posters were on display at the Moorestown Mall in October. Winners will be highlighted in My Maple Shade on November 7, 21 and December 5 and 19. This initiative was made possible through a grant from the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and with the support of the Maple Shade Town council.
Winner: Alex Palmer Grade: 6th School: Steinhauer School Teacher: Mrs. Underwood (homeroom) Alex Palmer is a 6th Grade student at Steinhauer School In Mrs. Underwood’s homeroom. veryone knows Maple Shade is a year-round destination for the entire family with its great shopping, eateries and town-hosted events. But when the season’s cookie baking and present wrapping start to make you say “Ba humbug” keep in mind that this year, in addition to the usual Maple Shade holiday events such as First Friday, there are some new town-wide events to check off your list. These new events are a result of a partnership between the Maple Shade Business Association and the 30-member Advisory Board of Commerce who have diligently worked behind the scenes to launch these holiday community programs that surely will become part of the town’s yearly traditions. “The Advisory Board of Commerce has created this vision for Maple Shade to become a holiday destination.” The group also aspires to attract new businesses and put a spotlight on the township’s many charms and offerings, says Linda MarryottWiest, manager of the Business Association and township resident since 1981. With a vision to deck the halls of Gazebo Park on Main Street for the Christmas Holiday, the groups approached Township Council, requesting funds to get their project under way. The Council provided some funding and combined with money raised from September’s sidewalk sale — where businesses rented booths — they purchased lights, an 18-foot Christmas tree and a 4-foot star, both of which will adorn the park. “We will put lights in large trees and throughout Gazebo Park as well as wreaths on the lamp posts,” said Marryott-Wiest. They’ve also asked businesses to participate by adding lights to their storefronts. Gazebo Park visitors will be enjoy the holiday light spectacle from Nov. 28 through Christmas. Thousands of glistening lights streaming from the large trees surrounding the gazebo will surely light the night sky. The decorative light poles will be adorned with lit holiday wreaths and the gazebo will be the center attraction; an invitation for all to gather and enjoy the many planned festivities. “Put your kids in the car and take a ride to see the lights,” said Marryott-Wiest. “Maple Shade is a nice town with friendly people. It’s a great place to do business. It’s a small town with a fabulous Main Street.” A destination, indeed.

It’s best to create a password that’s hard to crack The Password Conundrum. How many passwords do you have? How do you keep track of them? Where do you keep them? Are they secure? Who knows them? Who can figure them out? By the time you read this article, I have already stolen your password. Actually, I just guessed your password by checking your Facebook page for a few items you have made public to me. For you moms out there, I bet that you used your kids’ names followed by your anniversary. Hurry, there is still time to change it using these password tips. Avoid dictionary words, consecutive numbers, and common names. This includes pet’s names, the word “password”, and 12345678. While we are at it, don’t use any passwords that can be easily guessed, such as qwerty, secret, abc123, iloveyou, admin, letmein, and trustno1. Don’t use the same password for multiple sites. You have no control over the website’s security. If the password is stolen from the site, you are now opening yourself up to having your password in the wrong hands. If you don’t think this will happen, do a google search for “Adobe User Leak”. You will find that 150
million user accounts, including passwords, were taken. For your important accounts that hold sensitive data, such as banks, email and social networks, change your passwords regularly. How do you keep track of all the passwords? Regrettably, there is no perfect way. Keep the important ones memorized. Writing the passwords down is a good idea. Placing the Post It note under your keyboard is a bad idea. Treat the list like any other important document. If you are an advanced user, look into password manager solutions from LastPass, 1Password, or DashPass.
Creating a good password: A strong password will contains; at least eight characters, special characters (!,@,#,$), upper and lower case, and at least 2 numbers. It does not contain your user name, real name, company name, or a complete word. Two tips to create a secure password: Create an acronym for something that you can easily remember. Something meaningful to you, such as “My Favorite Philadelphia Flyers is Wayne Simmonds” can become MfPFi#17. Relate your password to a favorite past time, hobby, or sport, but put a twist on it. Example “I love to ski” could become IL0v2Sk1! Have a tech problem and need advice? Shoveling snow into the street is now a township ordinance violation With winter fast approaching, take note that shoveling snow and ice into the street by anyone is now a Township Ordinance violation. Do not blow, shovel, plow, or otherwise deposit snow and ice from your property onto the public roadway at all. To do so is counter-productive to the efforts of the Township, County, and State highway crews that work hard to clear the roads of snow and ice to ensure safe travel for all motorists. Know that if you chose to violate the provisions of the law you may be fined. In addition to the Township Ordinance, also be aware of the NJ State Statute prohibits commercial operators from depositing snow and ice on the roadways. A portion of the depositing snow statute follows. Section: 39:4-77.3: “Anti-Snow Dumping Act”; violations, penalties. 1. a. This act shall be known and may be cited as the “Anti-Snow Dumping Act.” b. The commercial operator of any snowplow, or other snow removal equipment, clearing accumulated snow on private property shall not deposit, or cause to be deposited, such snow on any public road, street, or highway in this State or on public lands. A commercial operator of any snowplow or other snow removal equipment who fails to comply with the provisions of this section shall be liable to a fine of $250 for the first offense, and for each subsequent offense, a fine of $500. Book reveals female perspective on football
hat do you get when you blend the good old American pastime of football with a dab of lipstick? The answer: the recently published “There’s Lipstick on My Pigskin.” “It’s a book of American football terms defined with a comical twist that includes beauty, dating, fashion, friends, men, money, sex and shopping,” said Deb Durst of Maple Shade, co-author with Jill Rubin of Voorhees. The best friends kicked off a promotional book tour in early September. They aspire to share their love of football while showing what occurs when fashion collides with the sport. “I want people to see, hear, feel and connect to the power of comedy and its role in sports,” said Durst. “We love to laugh; we love to have fun.” Rubin added: “The purpose of the book is to make people laugh, make people feel good.” Their first of 20-some stops at restaurants and bars throughout South Jersey and Philadelphia was at Brewsters Pub in Maple Shade. The stops always coincide with an Eagles football game, says Durst. The two, donned in jerseys courtesy of the retail store sponsor, ROSTER, sign books and meet customers. “We love meeting people,” said Durst, who often picks up the microphone and speaks to the crowd. “Deb is an amazing speaker,” said Rubin, who grew up in Cherry Hill and moved to Voorhees 26 years ago. “She is very social and loves to speak.” Rubin is a bit quieter and loves to write. The two sales and marketing professionals met over five years ago when working for the same company. Several years ago, Rubin says she was going through a very challenging career and personal transition. Durst was also experiencing some life changes. Durst and Rubin became sources of support for one another. CP-0010541497
“We help each other,” said Rubin, recalling their phone conversations two years ago when they tossed around the idea of collaborating on a satirical, dictionary-style sports playbook. “As far as career goals, we realized that we had to take the bull by the horns and move forward.” Said Durst: “No one is going to help you, but you.” A passionate sports fan, Durst was born and raised in Philadelphia. “I grew up in a house of sports attics,” she said. “My father held Eagles season tickets in the days of Dick Vermeil.” Durst moved to Maple Shade 25 years ago, a town she has grown to love. “The people in Maple Shade are very friendly, genuinely nice,” she said. Durst is quick to point out that there’s no profanity in the book; there are some sexual connotations, so it’s for an adult audience. And for those unaware, she explains that footballs are actually made from the skin of pigs. The book can be purchased at amazon.com and barnesandnoble. com. It’s also in some libraries and Indie shops. “It’s available in 15 countries and 10 languages,” said Durst. The co-authors describe “There’s Lipstick on My Pigskin” as just the beginning. “Jill and I are building our brand and an awareness,” said Durst. “Our next book will be on hockey. We are looking to write about every sport.” Jill Rubin (left) and Deb Durst, co-authors of “There’s Lipstick on My Pigskin” are shown at the new AstroTurf field at Maple Shade’s Woodlawn Sports Complex on Collins Lane
