W
e live in a remarkable world, where we can communicate with people halfway around the globe in a matter of seconds. Connections are instant, and everywhere, thanks to the miraculous devices of modern life. But nothing can replace the connections we’re able to explore in our own neighborhoods. If your familiarity with your neighborhood ends at the nearest shopping center, don’t worry: This edition of the annual South Jersey Guide spotlights communities to help you form connections. We’re not going to introduce you to your neighbors: That part is up to you. But we will aim to broaden your circle in meaningful ways. We’ll point you toward community-based gyms and workshops that will keep you healthy. Want to take fitness to another level? Join an adult sports league — we’ve rounded up a list of some of the area’s most active clubs that offer competition and camaraderie. We’ll also provide details on groups where moms can socialize while kids play. We’ll help small-business owners find dozens of local options for networking. We’ll provide contacts if you or someone close to you is struggling with life’s basic needs: food, financial security, finding a job and more. And we’ll point parents of special-needs children to groups that offer much-needed support. Anyone who lives in South Jersey knows there’s plenty of fun stuff to do here. But we dig a little deeper so you can make the most out of area attractions. Check out our “hidden treasures” — lesser-known South Jersey spots that are worth a visit. We also make suggestions for themed family outings, beyond-the-boardwalk fun at the beach, parks for your favorite outdoor activities, and historic sites that will deepen your appreciation of South Jersey. Our community spotlights might tell you a thing or two about many of the area’s towns, including your own. You don’t have to absorb this info all at once. Use this guide as you would any information tool — search for resources as you need them. We do recommend you keep it around as a reference: Our Can’t-Miss Calendar includes a year’s worth of South Jersey highlights. And you won’t want to miss our look at the area’s upcoming street festivals, food events, performances and art shows — all available without a bridge toll. For online-exclusive feature stories and a special video series that takes you behind the scenes of South Jersey landmarks, go to www.cpsj.com/sjguide

Some of the world’s greatest poets have been inspired on long walks; you can walk with them at the Poet’s Walk, built by nonprofit group, Heart of Camden, along with Sacred Heart Church. Visitors can walk on a path of bricks along Jasper Street on the way to the South Camden Theatre. They’ll see more than 150 bricks inscribed with the names of poets, playwrights and authors — everyone from Tupac Shakur to James Joyce to God, and local writers including Monsignor Michael Doyle of Sacred Heart and playwright Joe Paprzycki of the South Camden Theatre Co. The centerpiece of the walk is a James Joyce brick nestled into a millstone. The brick is from the rubble of Joyce’s home in Ireland, and is one of 58 bricks placed in “Seats of
Learning” around the world. You can visit Poet’s Walk on your own or email hpierson@heartofcamden.org for a personal tour. After the walk, guests can visit Camden’s beloved poet, Walt Whitman, at his final resting place in Harleigh Cemetery, 1640 Haddon Ave. His granite mausoleum is shaped like a house, and many have visited to show respect for the American poet, essayist and journalist. To learn more about Whitman and read “Leaves of Grass,” take a short walk to the Camden County Historical Society’s headquarters and library at 1900 Park Blvd. in Camden. Besides his works, there are rare books, documents and images of Whitman. (856) 964-3333; www. cchsnj.com .

To market Country charm and friendly faces greet all who visit the Dutch Wagon Market in Medford. The first floor is filled with meats, baked goods, chocolates, deli salads and lunchmeat, breads and more. And soft pretzels don’t get much fresher: Amish vendors slice dough, twist it into a pretzel shape, dip it in butter and bake it. There is even a small sit-down restaurant that serves sandwiches, salads and breakfast all day. Handmade quilts, wood furniture and other home décor fill the downstairs. The market is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. 109 Route 70 E., Medford, (609) 654-1414. Other Amish markets in South Jersey also offer a taste of Lancaster. Try Stoltzfus Farm Market, 701 N. Black Horse Pike, Williamstown; (856) 875-0469. And the Amish Farmers Market, 108 Swedesboro Road in Mullica Hill, has a sit-down restaurant and sandwich shop. (856) 478-6285; www.amishmarketmullicahill.com Home-cooked foods, meats and produce, as well as housewares and small furniture items, are available at the Amish market at the Grand Marketplace, 4340 N. Uncork the potential Indulge in an antipasto platter or a picnic beside a fountain on a patio courtyard. Or watch a game on a big-screen television with a bottle of fine wine instead of a beer. Christmas spirit You know that idealized vision of the holidays we get in our heads? That scene where we’re drinking cocoa by a Christmas tree, watching a model train whir through a miniature village? It really exists at Exley’s Christmas Tree Farm in
Deptford. Even amid an abundance of tree farms and Christmas attractions in South Jersey, Exley’s is something special. The family farm’s Santa Land is a tradition: Little ones take tractor-pulled hayrides to the top of a hill, where Santa is waiting. Kids can get their photos taken with Santa and see several animated holiday figures, and parents can pick out a lush tree to tag. A fire pit and hot cocoa stand keep visitors warm, and the indoor train display will warm hearts. Kids can even push buttons for lights and other special features on the display. Exley’s is open seven days a week after Thanksgiving. 1535 Tanyard Road, Deptford, (856) 468-5949; www.exleyslandscaping.com
Lunch is history At Burlington County College in Mount Holly, the new Culinary Arts Center is equipped with both cutting-edge technology and historic charm. The culinary facility is housed in the former Farmers Trust Company Bank, the second-oldest bank building in New Jersey, constructed in 1814. The facility contains original exposed brick on the interior and the door to the bank's vault. Although the school uses the newest kitchen equipment, the building maintains a historic atmosphere with rebuilt fireplaces, replicated stained-glass windows, marble stairs and hardwood floors. Beginning this fall, students will
run a restaurant at the location for lunch on Fridays. Reservations can be made by visiting www.bcc.edu/culinary.
Sweet on South Philly Plenty of South Jersey residents have South Philly roots — and even more have a taste for the area’s Italian specialties. PARKS The area’s green spaces let you blaze your own trail, whether for activity or leisure By Kayla Barrett :: Courier-Post Staff

ooking to get the kids outdoors, hike a trail or go fishing? You’re sure to find a park — or several — that fulfill your outdoor wish list. South Jersey, surrounded by the Delaware River and bay, offers plenty of unique terrains suitable for all types of activities and audiences, including the four-legged variety. Follow this guide to take the guesswork out of planning a trip to a nearby park.
Atco Lake Park The 77-acre park in Waterford runs along the White Horse Pike. The lake itself spans 35 acres and gives visitors ample space to fish. Nature trails surround the water, making this Camden County park a picturesque backdrop for a leisurely walk. www.camdencounty.com Great for: fishing, sports/exercise, leisure
Berlin Park The 151-acre space nestled among the White Horse Pike, New Freedom Road and Park Drive in Berlin, is a hugely popular spot to play and relax. The Great Egg Harbor River flows through the park, allowing for fishing. With five miles of nature trails, two playgrounds, three picnic groves and an in-line hockey court, along with designated areas for softball, volleyball, and basketball, the park keeps visitors busy. www.camden county.com Great for: fishing, sports/exercise, kids, gatherings
Connolly Park Kids romp and dogs run at the township park on Centennial Boulevard in Voorhees. With picnic tables and a gazebo outfitted with electricity, it’s also a comfortable place for gatherings. Connolly is one of the only parks in the area with a cricket pitch. There’s also a walking track, as well as a small and large dog run: The dog-designated portion of the park is fenced in, with plenty of benches and other facilities. www.voorhees nj.com Great for: kids, pets, leisure
