Home, sweet Maple Shade home By Ann Cutry For My Maple Shade

The location of Maple Shade is great, close to all bridges, two malls and major highways. A small town with reasonably priced homes and a Main Street where you can walk, and parks where you can enjoy nature and chat with neighbors. previously called Maple Shade started as a vacaChester Township tion spot for people from Philadelphia. Small vacation homes were built on large lots. Later these home turned into year-round homes. As their children grew up, they built new homes next to their parents home. As a result, Maple Shade has a variety of homes including ranch-style homes and bungalows. Sales of existing family homes has picked up, days on the market has de-

creased since last year by 40 percent+ from an average of 226 days to 132 days on the market, and prices of homes have increased by more than 6 percent.

On the market Presently there are 96 single-family homes for sale, starting at $75,000 (handyman special) and up to $350,000. Also 32 condos, priced from $72,900 up to $ 127,000. In addition, MT Construction is build-

ing 10 new homes, 3- and 4-bedrooms with 2.5 baths, starting at $268,900. This is the biggest sub-division in the township in many years and will be a great benefit for the town. Your home is often the biggest investment you have, and therefore the sale price of your home is important to you. Recently, 2- and 3-bedrooms ranch homes sold for $70,000 to $166,000; 2- and 3-bedroom bungalow homes sold for $115, 000 to $165,000. Mixed-style homes sold for $73,000 up to $230,000, and

mixed-style homes with 4 bedrooms or more sold for $80,000 to $250,000. Newer, modern homes have sold for $300,000+!

Prepare to sell Price variation depends on the condition of the home and how much updating is needed. In other words: it pays to update your home, and if you are thinking of selling, freshly painted rooms in neutral colors will make your home more appealing to buyers and will sell faster and for a better price. Curb appeal is also important, put a planter with colorful flowers next to your front door, get rid of weeds and trim bushes. These easy fixes will make your home look much more attractive to buyers. Anne Cutry has been owner of Prudential McHugh Realty Inc. since 1992 and Broker of Record since 1996.

Town police encourage preparedness Age-appropriate tools for kids September is National Preparedness Month and the Maple Shade Police Department encourages everyone to Resolve to be Ready and learn about how you can best prepare you and your family for an emergency. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, “FEMA”, provides educational resources to help everyone learn how to be ready. This year's Resolve to be Ready campaign, focuses on “Family Connection” to reinforce the importance of parents including their children in preparedness conversations in advance of potential disasters. The Ready campaign makes an emergency preparedness resolution easy to keep by recommending families consider these three ideas when making a plan: who to call, where to meet and what to pack. The campaign includes age-appropriate tools and resources to introduce conversations about disaster preparedness to children on www.ready.gov/kids, including a downloadable family emergen-

...Nice town, friendly people By Jeff Radio For My Maple Shade

As Chairman of the Maple Shade Advisory Board of Commerce, I take great pride in having the opportunity to showcase Maple Shade in My Maple Shade, a new supplement published by the Courier-Post. In conjunction with the Maple Shade Business Association (MSBA) and Main Street Maple Shade, as well as local departments and organizations, we now have the ability to provide Maple Shade residents and residents of surrounding communities with informative information specifically about Maple Shade in a combined format. Maple Shade is blessed to have so many profound, dedicated leaders within our community who all work within a similar mission to help sustain business and to assist in the growth of our economic development. Most reports indicate the overall economy is slowly improving, for Maple Shade we have seen a continuation of a significant number of applications for new and expanding businesses, which proves we offer something unique in being so attractive to developers. Placing “Best Town Spirit” in the CouierPost’s annual Reader’s Choice Awards for 10 consecutive years underscores how proud and committed our community is in supporting many initiatives including business growth. MY MAPLE SHADE

The difference is inside Remembering Main Street On the corner of East Main Street and Fellowship Road sits the small, but mighty, campus of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School. The school opened in 1929 to serve the educational needs of our community and offers families a private school experience at an affordable cost. For the past 85 years, OLPH has provided a safe environment where students are able to discover the joys of education, acts of service, and rigorous academics. Most notably over the past six years, OLPH has been named the CourierPost’s “Best of South Jersey, School System.” Along with our school, Mrs. Beth Lufkin, our kindergarten teacher, was voted “One of the Best of South Jersey, Teacher” and our second-grade teacher, Mrs. Sherri Hunkins, was voted “Best of South Jersey, Teacher”, two years in a row! This raises the question, “What makes Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School worthy of such an honor?” The Difference is Inside. As a member of our school community, you experience that “Differ-

ence” when you meet our students, parents, faculty, and staff. We are a family, committed to providing the best possible educational experience for our students. Through service-based projects, our students gain understanding of their responsibility to answer the call of social justice and to care for those in need. When seeking an example of this dedication to service, we can look at the FEED 500 Project that began as a second-grade class service project. The FEED 500 Project began in midMarch, led by Mrs. Hunkins. Her class decided to collect 500 nonperishable goods. Word spread and it

became a school-wide service project with our youngest students collecting the largest amount of canned goods. The students collected over 1,500 non-perishable items, which were delivered to the Maple Shade Food Bank. In May, the local ACME partnered with the second-grade class and hosted a FEED 500 Food Drive. In addition to this project, the student body prepares lunch for a local homeless shelter at Easter and hosts a clothing drive.

Remember the days where you could get all you ever needed in life from the Main Street in your town? One of my fondest memories as a child was walking down Main Street on Saturday morning and trying on a new pair of jeans at The Apparel Shop. Following an exciting shopping trip, I’d cross Main, at the only traffic light in town, and head to the 5 & 10 for some craft supplies. The day would round out with a stop for lunch at the Sun Ray for a cheeseburger and fries. Of course, on the way home, I’d stop at the Colmont Bakery or Maple Shade Pastry Shop for a cookie

or cupcake. In the modern world, many vibrant main streets, have gone the way of the telephone booth. And with that in mind, in an effort to preserve Main Streets erverywhere, the National Trust for Historic Preservation began the Main Street, USA initiative. Locally, Main Street Maple Shade Inc., a nonprofit local group, was created to enhance the quality of life for everyone who lives, works and shops in Maple Shade by improving the appearance of our downtown area, emphasizing historic preservation, attracting new, sustainable businesses and making our town a unique destination for shopping, dining and rec-

reation, makes Maple Shade a standout among area small towns. Some of the activities that Main Street Maple Shade is currently working on include Maple Shade Remembers and a Holiday Festival. Maple Shade Remembers is to be held November 7, and will be highlighted by a jeopardy style nostalgia game and an open mic segment, where participants can share their memories of Maple Shade of yesteryear. The Holiday Festival, to be held on December 5, will end 2014 by bringing the of small-town feel Christmas back to “The Shade” Helen Iapalucci, executive director.
