The Alberta Council for Global Cooperation (ACGC) is a coalition of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in Alberta, committed to advocate harmonious relations among nations and to promote equitable community development within nations which is people-centred, democratic, just, sustainable, inclusive and respectful of indigenous cultures. Members of the Council pursue this goal through supporting development education programs and participatory self-help projects throughout the world. The Council's goal is to support the work of its members through networking, leadership, information sharing, training and coordination, and represents their interests when dealing with government and others. The objectives of the Council are to promote and mobilize greater Albertan participation in assisting international development. The objectives are to be achieved in the following ways: 1. to consistently reflect in all ACGC policies, activities and services, the principal philosophies embodied in the Council's Mission and Development Principles; 2. to facilitate effective member networking and capacity building both internationally and domestically; 3. to coordinate and support members' activities in an effective manner; 4. to provide leadership on issues of concern to members; 5. to provide members with relevant and effective services; 6. to be an effective advocate and representative to government agencies and the public for international development concerns on behalf of the membership and to keep member organizations informed as to important shifts in Canadian foreign policy.

DESCRIPTION:
Every child, regardless of race, religion, income, and geographical location is entitled to an education. While this seems obvious in Canada, for many children in the world, in particular, Africa, this is not the case. Thousands of children each year cannot attend school because they lack the basic requirements such as books, pens, pencils and uniforms (which are required in most parts of Africa). In those communities that have schools or for children lucky enough to attend, the situation is not great. For many children, school takes place under a tree or in an old building that is falling apart. Desks and blackboards are not available. Books are in tattered and worn and often have to be shared between students. However, the children are eager to learn. Many realize that the key to their future is obtaining an education. In some communities, hundreds of children line up to receive a spot in the school. In an effort to assist these children and to improve their access to educational materials, the Africa Book Project was started. Each year we ship thousands of used books from Canadian schools, libraries and individual people, to schools in Africa. The need is so great and the desire to learn is high. It is up to us to do what we can. The presentation would cover the following: 1. The educational situation in Africa and other developing countries. 2. How Africa Book Project was started a. Jodi Facette's visits to Africa b. Her vision and goals c. What has been done so far 3. What we plan to do in the future and how people can help The cost of the presentation would be free (however, as we are a small organization, a donation would be accepted and if traveling far, we would request some assistance with covering travel costs). Presentations can be geared to all age groups and grades. Presentations would be approximately one hour in length and can be created for groups of 5 or more. A projector (for a PowerPoint presentation), screen, computer (if possible) and sufficient space for everyone would be required.

Marg Pollon is the founder and Executive Director of Bridges of Love Ministry. The focus of this ministry is to connect the church with the community in which it is found. Currently, the main thrust has been to educate and raise awareness of the threat of an Influenza Pandemic. How best can we prepare both as individuals and as a community? It is the local response that will have the greatest impact on minimizing the effects of a pandemic.
DESCRIPTION:
Influenza Pandemic 101 - Provide participants with a basic understanding of pandemic influenza, discuss historical patterns of pandemic occurrences, and discuss risk factors and risk reduction practices. There is no cost for the presentation; however travel expenses will need to be covered.

Canadian Humanitarian is a registered Canadian charity based in Medicine Hat. Our mission is to provide disadvantaged children throughout the world with the basic necessities of life such as food, shelter, clothing and education. We support schools, communitybase care projects, and orphanages in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We have also worked with orphanages in Haiti and St. Vincent. Canadian Humanitarian also offers humanitarian expeditions throughout the year to Ethiopia for interested individuals or groups. Expeditions run for two weeks in October and two weeks in February. Colette Belanger is Director of the Board of CW4WAfghan and CoChair of the Education Committee. Ms. Belanger joined CW4WAfghan as a member of the Calgary chapter in 2001 and has shared her passion and commitment towards universal human rights with our network making daily contributions towards our goals and objectives. Ms. Belanger joined the Board in 2003 and has devoted her volunteer time to building a strong education component for CW4WAfghan, developing many tools to raise awareness in Canada. As a soprano vocalist, former geologist and computer-mapping specialist, Colette's creative talents are used in developing information bulletins, graphic displays, post-card advocacy campaigns, pamphlets, posters and other related materials. She is the Email NewsList Manager distributing daily news updates to CW4Wafgthan members as well as the Co-chair of the CW4WAfghan Education Committee. This Education Committee has designed a Canadian Teacher's Resource project to engage Canadian students as global citizens in understanding human rights issues. Ms. Belanger is a regular presenter for CW4WAfghan at post-secondary institutions, schools and community groups. Janice Eisenhauer is Volunteer Executive Director and co-founding member of the National Office of Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan. She is a native Calgarian and holds an Honour's Bachelor of Arts in International Development Studies from the University of Calgary. Her 1999 honour's thesis focused on the empowerment of women in Afghanistan. Janice has travelled extensively in developing countries and has worked with several environmental and non-profit organizations. Janice is a full time volunteer with CW4WAfghan and over the past eight years has been coordinating the daily operation and development of this internationally recognized social justice organization. Janice has been honoured for her long-standing volunteerism in Canada as winner of the 2001 National Post/L'OrĂŠal Canada Women of Influence, the 2007 Soroptimist Making a Difference for Women Award, the Alberta Centennial Medal, and the Calgary Rotary Integrity Award 2007. Janis Rapchuk was born in England and moved to Canada when she was a child. She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a BSc in Zoology and later earned a Library Diploma from SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) where she is on the Advisory Board for the Library and Information Technology program. For the past 12 years Janis has worked as Head Librarian at Field Aviation in Calgary. She joined Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan in February 2004, after reading an article by Sally Armstrong in Chatelaine magazine. Since CW4WAfghan's first conference in October of 2004, Janis has been passionately interested in rebuilding libraries in Afghanistan. Her trip to Kabul in May 2005 was part of a fact-finding mission to guide the development of a library project and observe some W4W projects. Since that trip Janis has participated in numerous fundraising events and is keen to return to Afghanistan to help set up school libraries, and community resource centres. BIO:
Carolyn Reicher is the President, Secretary and co-founding member of the National Office of CW4WAfghan. Carolyn has a BA Degree in Anthropology, and is completing a degree in Development Studies from the University of Calgary. Her personal interest in development issues and the changing global community has taken her to a number of developing countries including Ecuador where she researched, developed, and wrote a social impact assessment study of a rainforest community. She also traveled to Afghanistan in March 2004 as part of her volunteer role with CW4WAfghan. Carolyn has done volunteer work for a variety of non-governmental organizations focusing on community development, literacy, women's rights, and health management. Carolyn is currently employed as Reference Assistant at the Calgary Public Library where she coordinates a one-on-one adult literacy program. In March 2005, Carolyn was the recipient of the Global Television Woman of Vision Award for her work with human rights and Afghan women. She is also the recipient of the 2006 Literacy Alberta Award of Excellence in the Practitioner category for her work in adult literacy. Travis Wilkins has a degree in business and is completing a masters in education. He is passionate about education and believes it is the most powerful tool we have to create prosperity - anywhere in the world. Travis has experience in community and youth development where his focus has been promoting proactive and strengths-based approaches. He is the Canadian Program Manager of CAUSE Kids and has spent time in Sierra Leone working with local partners to understand how Canadians can better support education in the country. CAUSE Canada believes that with the right tools, people have the determination and intelligence to overcome their challenges and break the cycle of poverty. CAUSE Kids is a program that gives children and their families access to education - a means to creating health and prosperity. Currently in Sierra Leone, West Africa, only 41% of children get to attend primary school; this means the average child will grow up to be illiterate and unable to benefit from the opportunities that formal education provides. CAUSE Kids gives Canadians the opportunity to support students and be a part of a proven solution to poverty. We also work to give families access to literacy, health, agriculture and microcredit initiatives. CAUSE Kids is committed to building a legacy of education, opportunity and justice in Sierra Leone. This year we are offering workshops supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) aimed to engage students in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs were created in the year 2000 when 191 members of the United Nations pledged themselves to halving global poverty by 2015. In recognizing that many schools are placing an emphasis on globalization and social responsibility we would like to offer these workshops (free of charge) for the 2007/2008 school year as a valuable resource to engage your students in creative and meaningful ways. Bringing the MDGs to Life is intended to have students engage in a comprehensive dialogue regarding the MDGs and their importance to people in developing countries, as well as to Canadians. They will explore what the MDGs are, the relationship between them, and explore where they can make a difference. All of our presentation are interactive and utilize participatory teaching techniques, process theatre and puppetry with 9' puppets. In past programs theatre and puppets have been successful in helping youth express their thoughts and feelings, and have had a major impact on young people's attitudes. These workshops are available for grades 4 -12 for groups of 10-30 students - this is negotiable. The time needed for this workshop can be tailored to class interest and available time. A two hour time period is ideal although 1 _ hours can be accommodated. The use of puppets is dependant on the amount of class time allotted. The cost for the presentation is free however; honourariums are welcomed. A large space is needed for the workshop, preferably not a gymnasium. Workshop maximum is 30 people. A DVD player will also be required.

Shauna Curry is CAWST's Director of International Services, leading a team of International Technical Advisors to provide training and consulting support services for clients worldwide. Camille Dow Baker is co-founder of CAWST as well as its volunteer President & CEO. She has more than 25 years experience as a professional engineer and executive in the oil and gas industry internationally. Camille left the oil and gas sector to go to the University of Calgary, where she earned her graduate degree in environmental design, focusing on water and sanitation in developing countries. In June of 2007, Camille was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Calgary. She is a member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, APEGGA, the CIM, and SPE. Prior to this, Camille was Manager of Engineering and Operations at AEC International (now EnCana) and enjoyed a very successful career in various managerial and leadership positions at Norcen Energy Resources Limited and Conwest Exploration Company Limited. She led several international projects in Australia, Peru, Egypt, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe. Camille is a recipient of the Alberta Centennial Medal, Global Woman of Vision Award and the National GRIOT Award for science and technology.

Bryan Fofonoff is a professional engineer with a degree from the University of Saskatchewan. Prior to joining CAWST he spent 14 years consulting to the international oil and gas industry as a machinery troubleshooter. His previous work travel took him to Argentina, Bolivia, Venezuela, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Syria, Poland, and throughout North America. Bryan spent 2005 as a volunteer with CAWST and was on the team that provided CAWST's first Biosand Filter program organizer training in Angola and Equatorial Guinea. After retiring from teaching High School Cecily Mills worked fulltime volunteer at a shelter for homeless women with children in Seattle. After studying Spanish in Guatemala, she volunteered with Witness for Peace in Nicaragua for three years and then with the Volunteer Missionary Movement as a high school teacher preparing students to teach in primary grades in one-room rural schools in Guatemala. She has traveled on delegations to Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala, Chiapas (Mexico) and more recently was an election observer in Nicaragua. She has also worked on the topic of Canadian mines in Latin America. Presently, she volunteers with Change for Children and is also an active member of Development and Peace and the Social Justice committee of the francophone parish of St.Thomas d'Aquin. Erynn Lived and worked in Jamaica for four years. Her most recent experience was with CUSO where she worked with Women's Media Watch Jamaica (WMW) for two years as the Programme Assistant. WMW is dedicated to reducing gender-based violence through education and advocacy. They do training programmes for a wide range of audiences throughout the island as well as teach a course at the University and are involved in many networks and collaborative projects throughout Jamaica and the Caribbean. She is currently the CUSO Outreach Leader for the West and Far North of Canada. Her experiences in Jamaica, especially with CUSO, shaped her view of development work and gender in particular. Erynn is still very much involved with Women's Media Watch and has established her own small NGO called Something Special which is an early childhood education initiative which helps to make sure disadvantaged Jamaican children receive the quality of education they deserve. Two or more EWB member representatives from your local university chapter will visit your classroom and give a 60- to 90- minute presentation, depending on the timing of your class. Using a PowerPoint presentation as visual aids, the EWB members will discuss local and global energy issues, and what youth can do about these issues. A large part of the presentation (about 30 to 45 minutes) is a handson activity where groups of 4-5 students complete tasks that represent typical daily tasks of people living in rural developing communities. They must transport one litre of water to their station from the front of the room, they must soak a piece of construction paper with water (irrigation of a field) and they must shell a certain amount of sunflower seeds to represent food preparation. The students are grouped into different countries, and are provided with different amounts and types of energy, depending on their country's population and energy consumption. Through this activity, students are challenged to think critically and creatively, while collaborating with their peers. Suitable for grades 1-12. Workshops are free or by donation. DESCRIPTION:
Two or more EWB member representatives from your local university chapter will visit your classroom and give a 60- to 90- minute presentation, depending on the timing of your class. Using a PowerPoint presentation as visual aids, the EWB members will discuss local and global water issues, and what youth can do about these issues. A large part of the presentation (about 30 minutes) is a hands-on activity where groups of 4-6 students make their own water filters out of recycled plastic bottles and multiple layers of sand and gravel. The students are grouped into different countries, and are provided with different levels of information and amounts of play money, depending on their country's literacy rate and wealth. Through this activity, students are challenged to think critically and creatively, while collaborating with their peers. The students will gain a better understanding of social issues in technological development, international interdependency and cooperation, of drinkable water global needs, in resources availability and scarcity, as well as the role the youth has to address in those issues. Suitable for grades 7-12. Workshops are free or by donation. A projector and screen OR overhead and screen are required.

Deborah Jakubec has a degree in Anthropology from the University of Calgary. She began working in HIV/AIDS as Program Coordinator at the DOT for HAART program for street-involved individuals in Edmonton, Alberta. Deborah then moved to a fulltime position at HIV Edmonton and has been employed there for seven years in various roles. Her work has included facilitating a peer education harm reduction project with people who use drugs and people involved in sex work. In 2004, Deborah coordinated two projects for the Non Prescription Needle Use Initiative for the Public Awareness and Prison Task groups. Both projects focused in increasing tolerance towards harm reduction philosophy for prison staff and amongst the general public. Ms. Jakubec became Executive Director of HIV Edmonton in January 2006. At HIV Edmonton, Deborah held several roles including project coordinator of the HIV Edmonton's partnership work with Canadian Crossroads International and four AIDS Service Organizations in Suriname. She has worked in addictions, corrections and with the LBGTT community doing community development. Also, she was one of four staff at HIV Edmonton working on a human rights project with healthcare providers and Aboriginal community to reduce stigma and discrimination. Deborah is currently Vice-Chair External of the ACCH and was elected to the board of the Canadian AIDS Society (CAS) in June of 2005. She currently is Treasurer on the CAS board of directors. Ms. Jakubec will speak for free within Edmonton. HIV Edmonton will offer this service outside of the Edmonton area for a cost-recovery fee. This workshop is based on an educational resource kit called Behind the Pandemic: Uncovering the Links between Social Inequity and HIV/AIDS. During this workshop, participants will explore HIV/AIDS as a social and international development issue. Experiential education techniques are used to help explore social dynamics behind the HIV/AIDS pandemic; key concepts of risk, vulnerability, and impact; underlying reasons why some population groups and regions of the world are more vulnerable; and impact of the pandemic at a local and global level. Participants will also learn about tools that they can use to make a difference. This workshop is aimed towards anyone, youth and/or adults that want to learn more about the local and global issues surrounding HIV/AIDS. The workshop takes 5 hours and is free within Edmonton. Gerald Gall is a professor of Law at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. He is a barrister and solicitor in the province of Ontario and has served on several boards of directors including the Legal Education Society of Alberta and the Centre for Constitutional Studies. He is a former executive director of the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice and the author of the first, second, third, fourth and fifth editions of The Canadian Legal System, a highly acclaimed introductory law text. During his tenure as a Western Director of the Canadian Human Rights Foundation, he was a principal organizer of a major conference on human rights in 1995. He also played a lead organizing role for the 1998 International Conference on Human Rights: Universal Rights and Human Values. Her expertise lies particularly within international political economy and community development. Currently, Ms. Vaugeois is Executive Director of the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights where she is leading projects focused democratic renewal, community development, partnership building, human rights education and racism. The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights has recently completed the development of a teaching resource entitled “Building Human Rights Communities: A resource for teaching and learning about human rights, citizenship, quality of life and communities”. This resource has been reviewed and approved as an authorized teaching resource by Alberta Education. “Building Human Rights Communities” is a hands-on, experiential teaching and learning resource which enables teachers to engage students in understanding human rights, citizenship and quality of life. The resource is geared towards active engagement of students to help them focus on how they can shape their own community, such as their school, into a human rights community. The Centre delivers workshops to teachers to engage them and enhance their capacity to use this resource effectively in their classes and to develop creative methods of engaging their students in human rights learning. As the teaching resource is a hands-on, experiential teaching and learning resource, it will enable teachers to engage students in understanding human rights, citizenship and quality of life, both within the classroom and within the community. The resource is unique that it links the old and new curriculum of the Department of Education and human rights to practical experiences and issues that youth can relate to. The resource is geared towards active engagement of students to help them focus on how they can shape their own community, such as their school, into a human rights community.

The Rights in the Sun (RITS) program is a fun-filled interactive educational program designed to teach youth from ages 5-25 about human rights. The RITS program is offered by the John Humphrey Centre and is designed to teach and involve youth in human rights education and discussion through applied, experiential learning opportunities such as games, art and videos. Through these sessions, we hope to build the next generation of human rights leaders and actively engaged citizens, aware of the human rights issues both at home and abroad. The JHC can provide a 2-3 hour training session for camp counselors, group leaders and facilitators. The purpose of this session is to educate facilitators on how to implement and teach Rights in the Sun programming to their campers/youth participants, thus allowing the program to reach other children and youth. Randy Easthouse is currently the Micah Challenge Alberta Regional Training Coordinator. He and his wife, Linda, have worked with the Wycliffe Canada since 1981.They lived in the Peruvian Highlands with the Quechuas from 1987 to 2002, working with the Summer Institute of Linguistics in bilingual education and literacy in the Quechua and Spanish languages. From 1994 to 1998, Randy and Linda supervised the Peruvian Ministry of Education's bilingual teacher training and classroom visits in approximately 130 rural schools, resulting in over 7,000 children becoming literate in a- two year training program. Both priests and pastors continue working arm-in-arm to see that their congregations are fully trained, and sharing their new-found literacy skills with their compatriots.

What defines the purpose and role of a Christian in society today? 3 PowerPoint presentations are available and can be linked together (ex., for Fri nite/Saturday sessions) together with discussions and applications. The purpose is to move Christians and congregations from a “preaching/teaching” mentality to reflecting on their Bibles and expressions of unconditioned compassion. Focus is a church or youth group. Todd Lorentz is a philosopher and philanthropist combining practical humanitarian work with a background in philosophy and comparative religion. Lorentz holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Honours Philosophy (Western Philosophy and Nondualism) and a Master of Arts in Religious Studies (Tibetan Buddhism and Nondualism) from the University of Alberta. He possesses a Power Engineering certificate and has spoken to audiences around the world about the need for global economic and social reform along the lines of unity, justice and sharing. Following a trip to Kenya in 2005, Mr. Lorentz returned to Canada with the intention of developing a means to ameliorate the devastating conditions facing millions of HIV/AIDS orphans in Africa. With a close friend, Cristelle Audet, they created One Child's Village: A Global Orphans Foundation and gained rapid success in bringing their organization to the public arena. They are currently building their first school in the west Kenyan village of Bumala and, as the first organization of their type in that area, encountered a variety of unique challenges and experiences with the local community. One Child's Village is run entirely by volunteer support with the goal of ensuring that the bulk of monies donated go directly to the needs of the orphans. Listen to the experiences of Mr. Lorentz as he travels from inspiration to perspiration, developing his own charity to help HIV/AIDS orphans in Africa. Lorentz takes the audience through his experiences in developing an orphanage project in Kenya, providing an insider's view of his work at every stage including the establishment of a charitable organization in Canada, fundraising, contracts with the partners in the South, community relations in developing countries, unique needs of the orphans and widows, various community resources, networking, cultural expectations and misunderstandings, dealing with local superstitions, problems of travel and communications, transfer of funds, and much, much more. Sarah Hendriks is currently an Advisor on Gender Equality and HIV/AIDS for Plan Canada. Having worked with various NGOs, INGOs, bilateral agencies and universities both in Canada and countries of the Global South (Malawi, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, India, Haiti), Sarah Hendriks has extensive professional experience in international women's rights; HIV & AIDS programming; and gender equality mainstreaming. For more than three years, Sarah worked as a HIV/AIDS and Gender Research and Training Officer with Women and the Law in Southern Africa Research and Education Trust (WLSA) in Malawi, Africa. Together with partners, Sarah led the design and implementation of a multifaceted program on integrating a Rights-Based Approach to public service delivery. With more than 8 years experience in feminist participatory action research, Sarah has written and published on various topics including women's vulnerability to HIV and AIDS in Southern Africa and gender equality and organizational change. Other areas of work have been focused as a writer and facilitator of a national legal literacy program on gender-based violence, HIV and AIDS and access to justice in Malawi, in addition to program management of a multifaceted grant under the Canadian Coalition on HIV/AIDS and Youth in Africa. Sarah Hendriks is currently the Vice-President of the Inter-Agency Coalition on AIDS and Development (ICAD) and the co-chair of the Ontario Council for International Cooperation's HIV/AIDS Working Group. Sangita Patel is a Program Manager for Plan Canada where she manages a portfolio of international development projects in Africa and Asia. Her areas of expertise include small and medium enterprise, income generation, household economic security, gender and sustainable community based development strategies. Sangita Patel holds a University of Toronto Specialist Degree in International Development Studies and a Masters Degree in the Political Economy of Developing Countries with an emphasis on development economics. Leo Seguin has been active in third world development for many years beginning with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and his involvement with Rotary. Leo became so committed to sharing our Canadian good fortune with those less fortunate he established “Rainbow For the Future� a charitable foundation in order to maximise the generosity of donors, to educate Canadians on the plight of the Karayu people in particular and to assist the wonderful work being done in the Fantelle region by the local NGO, the Gudina Tumsa Foundation. Leo has traveled to Ethiopia several times and has been instrumental in providing funding for water diversion and sanitation projects, construction and equipping of schools and establishing a hostel for girls from pastoralist families to enable them to continue their education. Leo has heartfelt stories and fascinating pictures of the work, the people who are helping and those who are benefiting from the help being offered. Following a visit to Brazil with Rainbow of Hope for Children in January 1999 and seeing the extent of marginalization, George retired after serving 20 years as superintendent of East Central Alberta Catholic Schools. That fall he took on the duties of President and editor of the newsletter, Nexus, connecting partners in Canada and abroad. He continues to volunteer his time with the NGO as well as teaching in the Master's Program in Catholic School Administration at Newman Theological College in Edmonton. He facilitates workshops in Social Justice in schools and community groups throughout Western Canada and marvels at the many new ways to serve that retirement offers. Workshops are tailored to the time requested by the school or group, and can be half day, full day, or weekend. George facilitates workshops with groups as small 4 or 5 to groups of 200 or more people. He requires only suitable space with a wall or screen for viewing PowerPoint. For facilitating workshops in schools, George welcomes an honorarium as per school policy. For church and community groups, he welcomes a donation to Rainbow of Hope for Children. He desires his travel covered if at all possible.
