Design Fundamentals

Starting with the Basics... When I started with the Media Design program, my initial projects really got me familiar with the tools available in the Adobe Suite. Most of what I learned focused on the tools that I use now on a daily basis as well as the keyboard shortcuts to increase my speed with each program.

Project: Silhouettes These silhouettes were my first project, and my first time using Adobe Illustrator. I learned how to use the pen tool in AI, which is perhaps the most valuable tool in the program, and one I utilize in almost every project.

Lesson: Layers Adobe Help sums up layers like this: “Think of layers as clear folders that contain artwork. If you reshuffle the folders, you change the stacking order of the items in your artwork. You can move items between folders and create sub folders within folders.

Project: Graphic Reduction Once I learned the basics of the program, Tony had us maintain and expand upon our usage of AI while still focusing our skills with the Pen Tool. My graphic reduction took a lot of time, but it really helped me to grasp the option to layer pieces in AI. I wound up with twelve layers in this piece.

Lesson: Typography Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language readable and beautiful. This was one of our most important lessons, as typography is used everywhere.

Project: Quote We were tasked with finding a quote that fit our personalities and then given the assignment of making the typography the main and only feature of our piece. This quote is from Winnie the Pooh and I think the typography I used really helps to emphasize the point that Christopher Robin is making!

Lesson: Type on a Path Type on a path is also a very useful tool in both Illustrator and InDesign. Type on a path flows along the edge of an open or a closed path. When you enter text horizontally, the characters are parallel to the baseline. When you enter text vertically, the characters that are perpendicular to the baseline. In either case, the text flows in the direction in which points were added to the path.

Project: Word Art This project was actually super fun. As you can see, the entire image is based on text. This was pretty challenging for something like the cherry blossoms!

Lesson: Illustrator Tools By this point we covered most of the major tools for AI. This lesson really helped us get more into to the program and helped make sure we knew our way around tools and keyboard shortcuts.

Project: Word Illustration This project was meant to challenge our way of seeing illustrations. We were tasked with incorporating a word into the illustration. I will leave it up to you whether I was successful or not!

Final Revision

Lesson: Logos This lesson started to focus our skills in developing a piece built for a client. We focused on getting as much info from the client as we could and then using that info to create a design.

Project: Last Thursday Logo The project itself was to build a logo to be used by Last Thursday, a motorcycle enthusiast group in Sioux Falls. My design was actually one of the top two designs to be used by the group!

Lesson: Layout The last lesson of my first semester! This was a prep lesson for the next semester, but we did learn a lot about color and layout for effective design.

Project: Zoo Map This project was super fun. We were asked to build a map for The Five Creature Featured Zoo, a zoo we were able to create and pick the animals for. We were told that we would use this project in the future, so we needed to pick fonts and colors that would work for many different purposes.

Project: T-Shirt Design This was the first project of my second semester. At this point we were expected to know the programs we were using so things became more of a “here is your project, show me good design. We were also required to start turning in and using Artist Statements to explain why we did what we did. All of the projects for second semester pushed us to work with a client other than ourselves. The t-shirt we design was for the 30 Day Attendance Challenge for Southeast. For this project, I was in the top 5 for my design!

Project: Zoo Logo & ID Pieces Tony held true to his word! Our Five Creature Featured Zoo had a map, and now they needed a logo and identity pieces! We were challenged in this project to use only two colors which opened the door to the world of Pantones. This was a really fun logo to work on and initially I thought mine turned out really well. After peer reviews however, I learned how hard it is to read at a distance and how distracting extra fluff on id pieces can be! We would get a chance to revamp our designs during third semester.

Project: Dell Rapids Mascot This project was pretty awesome. Tony was approached by Dell Rapids High School with a request to revamp their mascot & logo. I was lucky enough to have had my design chosen as their new logo / mascot which was a very big honor for me!

I then worked with Jeff Dvorak (Dell Rapids Athletic Director) to get the logo finalized and ready for them to use. We did a few revisions and things are now moving forward there with the new design!

This project was for a group called Friends of the Big Sioux, an organization that is involved in the conservation and care for South Dakota rivers, mainly the Big Sioux. For my design, I decided to feature the falls at Falls Park. I thought this was a very iconic location for the Big Sioux, and something that you could center the whole design around. This design was in the top 5 selected!

Project: Zoo Logo & ID Pieces Original

See! A new and much better version! This project was to take our existing logo and pieces and revise them all to something new! I thought this was actually very helpful as a lot of times we as designers will be revamping existing pieces to something fresh. My final version is by far my favorite and also the most effective. Color scheme revamp and still hints of the original are there.

Project: Zoo Advertisements This project had us do a lot of things to advertise for a special event at our zoo. The first part of the project was to design a door hanger and pick out the event we would be holding. The second part of the project was for different sized ads for print and on-line. I feel like this was a really good start to making a cohesive campaign (which we would utilize more and more during our last semester!}

Project: Product Labels We needed to create labels for 2 products of our choice. We needed to choose between doing In-Mold Labels, Expanded Content Labels, and/or Shrink Wrap Labels. We then needed to create logos/ brand identities for the two products, along with the labels for each. I decided to do labels for a men’s shampoo and deodorant. This led me to an In-Mold label for the shampoo and an Expanded Content label for the deodorant.

This was our second to last project we worked on for school. We were asked to create a portfolio show logo that represented Media Design Technology and Digital Media Production and the concept of a portfolio show. We needed to develop a theme that tied all the pieces together and created a solid identity. All of the campaigns were then voted on by our classmates and instructors to pick which would be used for the show. My campaign was in the top 4!

We were each required to build a logo and identity pieces for ourselves, that really focused on our own personalities and likes. As you can see, I love the colors green and black. I thought these colors worked really well for my own pieces, and had a look of “digital sophistication to them! These pieces really help brand ME, which is the best part.

An Interview with Chris Moeller The new plant is incredibly efficient now as well. They have a plant vacuum system, so while they are cutting and trimming things, all of the excess paper goes out into a vacuum cylinder. That paper is then shredded and baled. A company comes to pick up the bales to send them off to be recycled. They have very little waste now in comparison to back in the day, even the regular waste goes to the recycle center at the dump. All the cardboard is recycled, as well as the printing plates. They also put in solar panels this last year so now the plant is very energy efficient. The technology they use has changed a lot too. When she started, most of the layout was done by hand, but with all the new software available, everything is done by computer. Chris told me when she first started, they had

a four color Heidelberg high speed press. Now they have multiple printers including a Heidelberg 6 color perfecting press and two Kodak variable high speed, web based presses. She explained that on the Heidelberg, everything run will be the same, but using the Kodaks, every image could be different in one press run. They use those presses a lot more now to get customized pictures or letters. She used the example of getting a letter starting with “Dear Andrew” or “Dear Jennifer”.

We also talked about what types of things have changed as far as WHAT is printed. Typically, mass mailings are the biggest thing done there now, but they do many other things as well. It used to be a lot of magazines, membership renewals, solicitation mail, insurance needs, bank statements, and bills. force Project: Game-time Program Ads During my third semester, I was lucky enough to get an internship with the Sioux Falls Skyforce! I started working with them before the season started in October. I’ve gotten to work on a ton of different proects with them, these were my first two. They needed inserts for the program featuring their social media information and the Force Dancers. The one on the top right they wanted based off a poster that our D-League Affiliate, The Miami HEAT, used for their social media.

Name Project: Online Live-Draft Update This piece was used for updates during the NBA D-League Draft. They used it online to let everyone know who we picked up, what college they played at and what position. This was a fun project, and it was actually kind of an emergency, where they needed it and gave me like 20 minutes to get done!

Project: Live Game Feed This piece was also somewhat of an “emergency” project. They were scheduled to have live game feeds on YouTube starting at 7PM on game nights and they didn’t have anything worked up for the website for Facebook to advertise. I actually found I worked really well under pressure, even though most of this is just logo placement, it worked out really well. I did a few different versions for each team we played.

Project: Instagram Link On this project, the Skyforce were giving away chances to win signed jerseys if you followed them on Instagram. It was used on Facebook and also on their website.

Project: Game Night Graphics For each game we needed different graphics for promos going on during each game. I actually got to create two for each game I was at. I built these to pieces to introduce the opposing team and also to welcome any of the groups we had in attendance at each game.

Project: TV Series Logo I worked on this piece during my second semester in school. I was approached through a friend by Broke Free Productions to do a logo and intro piece for a series called Facing Your Issues. This series is currently on-air on KTTW Fox 7 in Sioux Falls.

Project: Business Card I worked on this project over the summer for a good friend of mine that sells Body By Vi. Their slogan is “I Challenge You so I thought that should be foremost on the card. Preston loved both versions, but he ended up going with the black version with a metallic silver ink. They turned out awesome!

Project: Business Card Over my summer break I had the privalege of working with Senator Larry Pressler on a few pieces he needed for his campaign. I was first approached by Brooke from Broke Free in late May work up a business card for him to use.

Project: Polling Graph

The second project I worked on for Senator Pressler was a graph based off poll numbers from May through October. This piece was featured on his campaign website. I was so honored that I got to work with Senator Pressler on his campaign, it was one of the highlights of my summer and also a highlight of the graphics I’ve done.

Enjoy some Kisses from the new Mr. & Mrs.!

I was married in October, so aside from all the other projects I worked on, I also put together all of our printed materials! I started with our save the dates. As we got more into the planning, our color scheme changed a bit, but purple remained the main color, throughout. I also set up a crossword and table tents for the reception.
