Learning at ACG School Jakarta

Year 1

During our third Unit of Inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves, Year 1’s explored the central idea ‘services work together to meet the needs of a community.’ Students had opportunities to create their own community model in class. We are now finding out about the different types of community helpers. Students interviewed security guards of ACG in class and learned about their job and also how the services help people. Year 1’s champs are little inquirers that enjoy researching. We look forward in continuing our inquiry in our new term.

Year 4

For Mathematics, Year 4 conducted an ACG Primary -wide backpack survey, where students would indicate features preferred in a backpack. For this Data Handling exercise, our students collated data from tallies, then created a bar graph for each class and one for the whole primary school. Year 4 students were so convincing, that orders came in from some classes for new backpacks! Learning about the different poetry types and their features in literacy culminated in students creating their own poetry using poetry features of their chosen style. Students chose Acrostic, Free Verse, Diamante, Haiku, Limericks and Cinquain among others. Here are some examples. Year 4 just completed their Summative for the Unit called ‘ How We Organize Ourselves’ and presented innovative designs, some of which were of their own their creation. Students had to identify a problem that their design would solve, how it functioned, test their designs, and explain if their designs were considered sustainable. As part of their provocation students were tasked to create a structure with straws and connectors, which had to be tall and stable. Collaboration and planning were key, as well as a bit of the competitive spirit. We were also fortunate to hear a presentation from Mr. Mark Ellison who works with our secondary students on Design Technology. We learned about the design process starting from the brief right through to the prototype stage. Our next Unit of Inquiry called ‘How The World Works’ explores structures, and our students enjoyed their provocation where they had to create a strong bridge out of toothpicks and glue, then do a weight bearing test to see if it can withstand weight. Students realized that it takes patience and problem-solving skills to create their bridges. You can see our students planning and gluing the first side of their bridge here.
