Dear Friends and Supporters of Achieva,

Reflecting on the past year, we are filled with immense pride and gratitude for what we have accomplished together at Achieva. Our shared commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities has yielded remarkable outcomes, thanks to your steadfast support and belief in our mission.

There’s never a lack of stories celebrating the successes of those we support. The hard part is deciding which stories to share. In this edition of ‘Belonging,’ Achieva’s summer newsletter, we’ll highlight a few.

One of the cornerstones of our success has been our focus on early intervention. We know that early support can make a tremendous difference in the trajectory of the lives of children with developmental delays. Through targeted therapies and educational initiatives, children in our community have achieved milestones that once seemed out of reach, setting them on a path toward a more inclusive and fulfilling future.

Another area where we’ve made significant strides is in promoting competitive-integrated employment. By advocating for real job opportunities and providing the necessary support, we’ve witnessed incredible stories of ambition, resilience, and success. These achievements enrich the lives of those we serve and strengthen our society’s fabric.

Achieva has also focused on supporting parents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Using a hand-over-hand model, parenting education staff guide families toward achieving parenting and independent living goals. Our programs aimed at empowering these parents have not only fostered stronger family bonds but have also challenged societal stereotypes.

As we look to the future, we are excited to share the successes resulting from our recalibrated strategic plan designed to enhance our services further and expand our reach. These initiatives reflect our commitment to innovation, quality, and empowerment. They are guided by our vision of a world where people with disabilities are fully included and welcomed into all aspects of community life, enjoying the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

None of this would be possible without the generous support of our donors, volunteers, employees, and community partners. Your belief in our mission fuels our efforts and inspires us to set our sights even higher. As we embark on this next chapter, we invite you to join us in making an even greater impact.

Thank you for being a part of our journey.

Warmest regards,

Self-Advocates Speak During Governor’s Visit to Achieva

Two recipients of Achieva’s services showed the profound effect of knowing their voice is valued. They spoke to an audience gathered at Achieva for a visit by Governor Josh Shapiro with the ease of seasoned speakers.

Before welcoming the governor, sisters Christy and Sierra Wechtenhiser confidently expressed the value of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) and the pivotal role they play in their lives and those of their friends.

They spoke confidently among a group including State Senator Jay Costa and State Representatives Aerion Abney and Jessica Benham, who reinforced the need for adequate funds for intellectual disability and autism services.

Christy and Sierra’s presence not only illustrated the direct impact of policy decisions but also highlighted the impact of empowering a population whose voice needs to be heard.

In April, Achieva President and CEO, Steve Suroviec, welcomed Governor Josh Shapiro to Achieva. The governor addressed the media to promote his unprecedented spending plan for the Intellectual Disability and Autism (ID/A) service system. He emphasized the importance of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) and the state’s responsibility to ensure adequate funding for DSP compensation.

State Senator Jay Costa and State Representatives Aerion Abney and Jessica Benham joined the governor, stressing the need for the General Assembly to adequately fund ID/A services and pass the governor’s budget proposal. They highlighted the significance of investing in the ID/A community to ensure highquality care for people with disabilities.

Erin Grimes, Disability and Family Support Advocate and DSP for Achieva, spoke about the personal struggles faced by families due to waitlists and the shortage of DSPs. Sisters Sierra and Christy Wechtenhiser, who receive services from Erin, shared their challenges and advocated for those without a voice. Sierra concluded, “We’re speaking for those who can’t speak for themselves!”

Note: On July 11th, Governor Shapiro and the General Assembly announced a final state budget deal, which included a reduction in the amount of ID/A funding compared to the budget proposed in February. Families and service providers are waiting to hear from the PA Office of Developmental Programs how it will absorb this reduction - e.g., will higher reimbursements that providers desperately need be cut or will fewer people languishing on waiting lists be served? As this newsletter goes to print, stakeholders are waiting to learn.

If other parents have even the slightest inkling that their child could benefit from early intervention services, then they should get started right away. Having access to a team of experts at no cost is truly an incredible resource and one we will always be grateful for.

Austin’s Journey with Achieva Early Intervention

What could have been a stressful and clinical experience has instead been supportive, fun, and transformative!

Discovering Austin’s torticollis shortly after birth was a surprising challenge for his family. Torticollis occurs when a baby’s neck muscles cause their head to twist and tilt to one side. Despite initial attempts to alleviate the condition, it persisted, leading his pediatrician to recommend early intervention services. Austin’s parents questioned whether they fit the profile for such services, but their pediatrician’s assurance guided them toward a pivotal decision.

Lisa Moore, a Physical Therapist with Achieva Early Intervention, came to their house and showed much care for Austin.

“It really filled my heart, and seeing how much he enjoyed her was even better,” shared Jackie Cappucci, Austin’s mother.

“Lisa’s positivity really made me feel supported during a challenging time, and I looked forward to our sessions,” she added.

In moments of doubt and exhaustion, Lisa’s encouragement was a beacon of hope, reaffirming Austin’s parents’ natural abilities and fostering a nurturing environment for Austin and his twin sister, Lily.

One significant moment in Austin’s journey came when Lisa suggested exploring his vision despite passing initial screenings. This decision proved pivotal, unveiling a previously unnoticed factor influencing Austin’s progress with torticollis. The revelation of his need for glasses brought a mix of emotions from his parents, yet it underscored the interconnected nature of his conditions and the importance of comprehensive care.

Reflecting on their experience, Austin’s parents now advocate wholeheartedly for early intervention, recognizing its profound impact on their son’s development and their family’s journey. As they work towards resolving any lingering challenges, they do so knowing they have a supportive ally in Achieva Early Intervention. Beyond physical improvements, Austin’s confidence and resilience have flourished under Lisa’s guidance, laying a foundation for continued growth and exploration.

“We are so incredibly grateful that Lisa was assigned as Austin’s physical therapist. What could be a stressful and clinical experience has instead been supportive, fun, and transformative for my little boy!” exclaimed Jackie,

expressing profound gratitude for the care they’ve received. Through their journey, they’ve discovered that with the right support, every challenge becomes an opportunity for growth and resilience.

Austin’s torticollis was evident within a few hours after birth. Torticollis causes the chin to pull toward the shoulder. Symptoms include a limited range of head motion, headache, or neck pain.

Sarah Harris enjoys her dual role as artist, and Chick-fil-A employee. She even learned to love the task of sweeping ... it’s like dancing with a broom.

Sarah Harris Knows the Art of Customer Satisfaction

What connects VaultArt Studio and Chick-fil-A? It’s Sarah Harris’ innate ability to make customers happy.

Long before joining Chick-fil-A, Sarah began expressing herself artistically at VaultArt Studio, a project of Achieva. At VaultArt, artists utilize professionallevel arts instruction, exhibition space, and career coaching to transform their creativity into the calling of their choice. Her distinctive style is widely recognized and adorns the walls of many, including her Community Employment Specialist, Robert Gobin.

Robert first met Sarah while onboarding at Achieva during a visit to VaultArt. There, he purchased one of her paintings. Later, he was excited to learn he would work as her employment specialist.

Sarah and Robert collaborated on a plan for her tasks at Chick-fil-A, which ranged from tidying up the dining room, playroom, office, and employee lounge. Her routine begins by cleaning the playroom before the children start to arrive and have some fun. She enjoys watching the kids interact

and make new friends, knowing part of her job is to make her please customers.

At Chick-fil-A, Sarah has learned the importance of flexibility. Robert said, “She’s worked well before, but she’s more receptive to coaching and making changes now since we’ve been talking about that flexibility.” She references her laminated list of tasks and chooses what to work on according to the availability of each space. She gets to determine how her day goes and is empowered to make choices herself.

In addition to the support provided by Robert, Sarah has become close to several of her coworkers. “The whole store has become her natural support, and that’s been amazing,” added Robert.

Working with Sarah at Chick-fil-A and witnessing her creativity expressed at VaultArt has been eye-opening for Robert. He observes the stark contrast between her roles and gains insight into what “work” means to her.

Sarah Harris presents several paintings created in her signature style.

Success, as Joe Rawson notes, is deeply personal and varies for each family—whether it’s regaining custody of a child, providing a stable environment for growth, or fostering connections with community resources.

Empowering Families with Parenting Support

Achieva’s Parenting Support Program Marks Remarkable Growth and Impact

At Achieva, the Parenting Support program, under the dedicated leadership of Joseph Rawson, our Assistant Director of Community Living, assists parents referred by the Office of Children, Youth, and Families (CYF) and the Office of Developmental Supports (ODS).

Parenting Support has undergone significant growth and transformation, particularly in its outreach to families referred by CYF. The program now supports 15 families compared to just three before 2023—an achievement celebrated within the organization.

The impact of the Parenting Support program extends beyond mere numbers; it touches lives profoundly. Stories of the program’s triumphs reflect the capacity to provide encouragement and establish life navigation tools. One parent, faced with challenging behaviors from their child, strives relentlessly to provide the best quality of life, while another finds solace and empowerment through the program’s assistance in dental care and navigating appointments.

A crucial aspect of the program’s success lies in its collaboration with CYF. A recent audit yielded favorable results, showcasing improved communication and engagement. Success, as Joe Rawson notes, is deeply personal and varies for each family—whether it’s regaining custody of a child, providing a stable environment for growth, or fostering connections with community resources.

What sets this program apart is its holistic approach, recognizing that supporting adults also impacts the children within the family dynamic. Balancing these needs can be challenging, yet the program’s commitment is unwavering, whether it involves advocating for a mother at a teacher’s conference or providing assistance during times of crisis, like facing eviction.

At the core of Achieva’s Parenting Support program is an evidence-based nurturing parenting plan encompassing 15 competency areas and 42 lessons tailored to individual needs. Regular assessments and family plans ensure ongoing progress and adaptation to changing

circumstances, reinforcing Achieva’s dedication to empowering families to thrive.

Ultimately, the success of the Parenting Support program lies not only in the tangible outcomes achieved but also in the intangible sense of pride instilled in parents. Through collaborative efforts and a commitment to holistic support, Achieva continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of families within the community.

By using WealthHub, trust documents, balances, and client information will all live in one single environment, allowing our staff to obtain and relay information to our beneficiaries as quickly and accurately as possible. In addition, the build-out of this operations software continues and will soon provide features to assist beneficiaries with online disbursement requests and easier everyday access to trust information. By simplifying our processes for distribution, WealthHub will aid in our continually ongoing attempts to improve the quality of our services for our beneficiaries.

New! Grant Application Portal

Applicants to the Charitable Residual Program and the Cecil and David Rosenthal Memorial Fund now experience a streamlined user-friendly application process.

Implemented through SurveyMonkey Apply, the new platform features a pre-screening tool to determine applicant eligibility for one or both programs. Answers can be shared between the two programs, reducing the need to complete both applications separately when applicable.

Both programs provide supplemental support to people with disabilities.
