POLICY BRIEF Aligning High School Graduation Requirements with the Real World: A Road Map for States The link between strong academic preparation in high school and success in college and careers is clearer than it has ever been. Whether high school graduates go directly to college or into the workplace, they need advanced knowledge and skills if they are going to be successful. In fact, what once was considered the “college preparation” level is now the standard that all students need to meet to be successful after high school. Recognizing that the standards students have to meet in the “real world” have become more demanding, governors and policymakers in a growing number of states are taking action to increase the requirements for earning a high school diploma, thus ensuring students graduate with the skills they need to be successful. Over the past two years, 15 states have passed legislation or state board policy raising graduation requirements to the level that Achieve considers necessary to prepare students for success in postsecondary education and well-paying jobs. An equal number of states have indicated to Achieve that they are seriously contemplating raising graduation requirements.
