High School Science Assessments Table 2016-2017
2016–17 State High School Science Assessments
Achieve collected from publicly available sources (e.g., state education agency websites) which science assessments states are administering statewide in high school in 2016-17. We found that states’ science assessments have remained largely stable over the past year.
What changes did states make to science assessments in 2016–17? Seven states (Alaska, California, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and West Virginia) are administering a new science assessment this year. Of these, Nebraska has elected to administer the ACT to assess science, while all others are administering a state-developed assessment.
Which assessments are students taking in 2016–17? States use two types of assessments for students in science: • 26 states use a comprehensive (i.e., end of grade) assessment (or assessments) that is administered to all students in a cohort at the same time regardless of the courses the student has taken in high school. o 14 states administer the comprehensive science assessment at the end of 11th grade and 10 states do so in the 10th grade. o California is administering the California Science Test to a select group of students across grades 10, 11, and 12 as a part of the science assessment pilot in 2016–17. • 25 states are using an end-of-course (EOC) assessment (or assessments) that students take upon completion of the requisite coursework regardless of what grade level. In other words, students take the appropriate EOCs for the science courses in which the student is enrolled.
What content are students tested on? In terms of content assessed, nearly half of the states (25) include a biology assessment. Of these, 20 states require that all students take a biology assessment, while 5 states (Idaho, Massachusetts, New York, Utah, and Virginia), allow students to choose from a menu of science EOCs where biology is one option.
Science assessments in state accountability systems As states continue to reassess their accountability systems in light of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), they face important decisions about which high school assessments to incorporate. While states must assess students in high school in science they are not required to include a measure of science achievement in their high school accountability systems. To this end, Achieve released a brief reviewing summative assessments used in states’ accountability systems in October 2016. Our review found that 36 states include results from their science assessment in their accountability formula for high schools. The remaining 15 states assess students in high school science but do not use the results for accountability.
