pregnancy preparation Nesting Fever That wonderful feeling of anticipation of your babies’ arrival is a very exciting time, from prepping the nursery to buying and then washing all your new-borns clothes there is a lot to think about and prepare for. It can be very easy to get carried away and buy everything under the sun that’s baby related, especially if it’s your first it’s easy to think (particularly as you reach fever pitch nesting stages!) that if you don’t have everything ready and waiting as baby arrives disaster will strike, it really wont, the shops will still be open when you have a new-born at home! Before you purchase though ask around, ask mums what they actually used and needed for their new-born baby to avoid added expense that you don’t really need. Of course there are the absolute essentials, such as a safe car seat for that journey home, clothes, bedding, pushchair and even high chair if you want to think that far ahead, but there is a lot to be said for only buying the things you truly will use, so, ask those mums, after all mums usually know best!

The Reusable Nappy Association (RNA) is a collective non-profit organisation that promotes reusable nappies as a viable option for today’s parents. In a world filled with choices – and despite the wide range of reusable nappies available – a majority of babies in Britain still wear disposable nappies. The RNA is working to change this, together with manufacturers and retailers of reusable nappies, nappy libraries other interested parties. Together, they aim to create a fun and informative community to educate the public and generate the cultural shift that seems necessary to bring reusable nappies into the mainstream. RNA was founded in 2013 for Real Nappy Week, an annual event promoting reusable nappies. During the week, RNA ran an elaborate competition, ‘Clothopoly’, in which competitors were asked to hunt for letters on nappy retailers’ websites. The competition attracted not only existing cloth nappy users, but also successfully managed

Kids room Children’s room style dilemmas…. Children’s rooms are one of the hardest places to get right décor wise in the home. You want it to reflect your child’s tastes as well as your own and this can truly be a battle of the wills as they get older! You want it to reflect your style, and the style of the rest of the home, and they want…pink, pink, plastic toys and more pink….eeeek! So, how do you please everyone? Well… you don’t really; you just attempt to and hope for the best with some form of compromise. First off there are some really great companies out there who are making it their purpose to bring you and your home some kind of style and some smooth lines to your home. Go for classic yet stylish furniture and inject a bit of youthful fun with some wall art, a cool duvet cover or a characteristic rug. Storage is huge when it comes to making the space work in the style stakes…hide all of it away but have it all there for when they need it too. As tricky as it may be negotiating with your children on the style they want for their room, at least try, going for your style needn’t be boring to them, just show them there is another way, that their room can still be cool without being plastered with Disney Princesses!

If you can get the storage right in your home, keeping those toys and children’s things accessible to them yet unobvious in the space that they are there you can feel a lot more at ease with a clearer home. Personally, I always try and at least put all the children’s things in their storage space at the end of the day, particularly in the communal areas of the home, just so I can have my home clutter free for a while. Of course, I want my children to know that their things are there as and when they need them but having the right kind of storage makes both worlds possible! Feed Me Mummy Breastfeeding Vest One essential product every breastfeeding mum should consider buying is an affordable, versatile breastfeeding vest! A lot of mums are not very confident about breastfeeding in public so are always looking for ways/ products to enable them to feed discreetly. With breastfeeding on the increase, there’s a big market for breastfeeding related products. A new exciting product that launched last year is the award-winning Feed Me Mummy breastfeeding vest, designed by mum of two Marianne Valiente. It’s a simple innovative design, worn under normal clothes, with no extra clips or fastenings to fiddle with, giving easy access and leaving mums feeling more relaxed and comfortable to breastfeed whilst out in public. Not only does it cover a mum’s post-pregnancy tummy, but it also gives great coverage of the chest which many nursing vests currently on the market struggle to do, therefore truly enabling discreet breastfeeding. And the great thing is you can still wear your favourite clothes over the top, saving a fortune on specialised breastfeeding tops. The vest comes in black and white, and in a range of sizes sizes RRP £13.99 each or a Combo (a black & a white vest) for £24.99.

Weaning…an adventure for the taste buds! Feeding your child solids for the first time is very exciting for everyone involved! As your little one starts their foodie adventure and you take your front row seat with it comes quite a big responsibility too. Research has shown that the more variety in tastes that your child has when they are a baby, the more adventurous your child’s taste buds will be as he/she grows up. Plus, of course there are countless benefits of providing them with fresh, healthy foods over pre packed ones that go without saying (hopefully!) However, whilst the experience of weaning is a pretty joyful one it doesn’t come without its challenges… What to cook So, you know you want to provide your bundle of joy with delicious, home cooked, healthy grub but
Fillnsqueeze for fuss free meal times Providing your child with good, healthy home cooked food can be a challenge, from the prepping through to transporting it and your child eating independently it can feel like an uphill struggle, especially with all the mess that tubs and spoons can create. Yet despite its troubles you want them to eat the same nutritious foods that you do and the satisfaction you get as a parent knowing they are eating well is amazing. So, what if there was a way of making these meal time fusses vanish? Fillnsqueeze solve
where on earth do you start? Well…babies love anything with a naturally sweet taste to it, classic fail safe options are purees to start, fruit ones work well, then you might move on to include some combos like sweet potato and carrot, apple and pear, carrot and swede with peach, the possibilities are endless and of course you will find ones that your tot will love more than others. As they get older simply pureeing whatever the family are having for dinner is a great way to enjoy fuss free prepping! Be aware that not all food types and groups are suited for a small baby though….do your research first. How to make life as easy as possible! This can be the tricky part, whilst weaning is fun, it can be a messy game! Particularly at the start and as they attempt to feed themselves (food on the ceiling anyone?) The trick is all in the preparation, put an old shower curtain down on the floor, bib up and let the fun begin! Weaning and the world of solids is a messy adventure, but a fun one all the same!

little fashionista Creating a wardrobe for your children is really fun and with some really great emerging companies coming through, both online and on the independent high street, it’s become even better in recent years. Who can’t resist the cute organic cotton baby grows the gorgeous fun and colourful tops and leggings combos or even the beautiful occasion dresses and suits? Especially when these companies aim to bring you the very best in quality as well as style and practicality. Why shouldn’t children’s clothing be given the same amount of design and quality attention that adult clothing gets? The companies across the next few pages all have one thing in common, their focus on providing high quality garments. These garments typically last longer than their high street cheaper alternative, they usually wash better and are therefore more likely to give you far greater value for money in the long term as they grown with them (adjustable waistbands) and can be passed from one child to the next, or even kept to be cherished for generations to come. Quite often these products are that much more unique too with designs creative and made using traditional or very carefully regulated methods.

Little Bevan is a wonderful little rarity, creating handmade beautiful occasion wear for girls, boys and teens. Little Bevan creates timeless pieces by hand with her creative team. From the basement at her boutique in London, couture designer Sarah Colfer draws on her past experience in design and retail to create occasion wear that is truly special. The current Little Bevan collection is home to stunning vintage inspired dresses, shoes and accessories for the girls and smart outfits for the boys as well as beautifully designed dresses for the teenage girl. Managing to create clothing which appeals to both the wearer and the parents is a tricky balance to get right, yet Sarah and her team achieve this balance perfectly. Each and every piece is made from within the workshop, with only a handful of accessories, such as the knitted dolls with matching flower girl dresses and jewellery made by designer friends in London; “We have an exceptionally high level of quality with everything available at the boutique, I feel that children’s clothing should be treated with the same skilled technique as adult clothing, so when it comes to the stitching, detail and fabrics only the best will do. Any pieces that we don’t create within the workshop are all made by people I know and trust to match this quality level that is so important to us at Little Bevan” Sarah told us. The shopping experience, both online and within the boutique is a special one with the attention always focused on what it is you would like from a piece. “We provide a true couture experience for those that have specifics in mind and we are more than happy to alter from the existing collection to suit a customer’s needs. Our boutique provides a real tailored experience and it’s a joy to see the smiles on the faces of the little flower girls and boys as they try on items in front of the big mirror, after all, they need to be happy in what they are wearing as much as you are!” Sarah enthused. So, to discover wonderful craftsmanship from a timeless collection visit www.littlebevan.co.uk. Find details here for the London Boutique and other stockists of Little Bevan across the country.

Individual style for your unique tot… Any parent will tell you of the tick list of things that they want from the items in their children’s wardrobe, they typically go something like this… they need to be…. practical (i.e. they keep the wet and cold out and are comfortable), attractive (bright, fun and appealing to parent and child) and will represent something that looks a little like good value for money (so, they wash well, last more than a few months at least and could even be handed down to siblings.) This clothing wish list isn’t all that easy to fulfil and at least one of the categories usually falls short. However, there is one label that seems to have got the child’s wardrobe completely covered and that’s Villervalla, an up and coming boutique brand from Sweden. But we aren’t in Sweden I hear you cry! Fear not readers, Impkids.co.uk have brought the brand to the UK so that you too can enjoy fun, practical and high quality clothing for your offspring. Stocking a wide range of season appropriate clothing and accessories from Villervalla collections you can find everything you need to create the perfect capsule wardrobe for your cool kid. Managing to achieve that rarity of appealing to both the parents and the kids Impkids.co.uk clothing is fun, colourful and quirky whilst being practical too with the clothing being washable (no fear of colour runs) and boasting the little details such as adjustable waistbands and truly waterproof waterproofs! With many of the designs being match able you and your child can have fun with their outfits as they get to express their likes and dislikes through what they wear, not only is it fun but it’s also great for creating a wardrobe that’s inexpensive and lasting. Talking of which, Villervalla clothing really does stand the test of time with the high quality of each piece and the great colour palettes suitable for girls and boys making hand-me-downs possible whatever the gender! So, get your kids kitted out in clothing you both love at www.impkids.co.uk

gorgeous gifts Baby gifts for life… Gift buying for the baby in your life is never easy, particularly when so many people seem to be buying them something! However there are some great ways to give baby a unique gift, for example there are some great companies however that utilise the specialness of your babies finger and foot prints to create a piece of memorabilia to last a lifetime. Have your babies print placed within some silver jewellery, get its date of birth marked in aluminium or, opt for a stunning cast of baby’s hands or feet in precious metals. These days you can still show the sentimental aspects to the occasion with gifts that are unique and special without opting for the silver teddy bear or cup that we might have had when we were babes. Or, if you are looking for something for babe to keep forever but that they can snuggle up to, why not seek out that special snuggly toy, you know the one that they keep til they are far too old for it?! Whatever you decide there are a host of stunning gifts out there just perfect for a new-born’s arrival, or to celebrate a birthday that is special. Take a look outside of the box and at some of our suggestions for gifts that say you care, we are sure babe, parents and you will love the gifts that we recommend!

Sleeping soundly with the Snuggle Sac….
There were six in the bed and the tired mummy said; “Anyone with a willy leave my bedroom NOW” Occasionally being the lone female in a house of five boys (I include He Who Gets Way More Sleep) can feel a touch overpowering. 90% of the time I love the noise and chaos. I can openly see I've absorbed more than a few masculine tendencies and living in an all male environment is often fascinating. I marvel at their short attention spans resulting in twelve activities before mid morning. I've become adept at ducking balls as they whiz past my head whilst I prepare dinner. I no longer place value on ornamental decoration or nice lamps and I've almost resigned myself to the front room being a soft play area. The garden now only grows plants of a rubbery nature and I'm slowly becoming acclimatized to the smell of bottom that permeates the top floor. Another aspect of an all male household is the unique bond between a boy and his willy. They never tire of freestyle willy dancing competitions or willy exposure hilarities. Then we have the random willy Q&A sessions, a recent one had three of the ratbags recoiling in horror, exclaiming “Eurrgh that inside bit is disgusting”. Thankfully Daddy was on hand to talk them through that one!My two year old even has a little tune he sings whenever nappy free time allows him direct access. However, as much as I love my boys I do reach the point where enough is enough.A girl can only take so much before she has to reclaim her femininity by shutting the bedroom door, lighting a scented candle, admiring the tulips she has purchased for herself and then pick up a book and escape into a world where smelly bottom wind is not the funniest thing on earth! x www.rufusrabbit.co.uk

When it comes to ensuring our little ones are comfortable enough to sleep soundly at night there isn’t much us mums won’t do; nightlights, blankets, teddies, lullabies and stories. Yet when we go away on our holidays it’s even harder to ensure they are as snug as a bug. The Snuggle Sac offers the perfect solution to aiding sound slumber whether at home, or away on travels… From a mother’s plight to keep her little one cosy as he moved from cot to bed to make way for his little brother in his cot, mum to two Tina Lane got so concerned about the warmth of her eldest that she invented the perfect solution, the Snuggle Sac. Made from warm fabrics in striking designs, they are somewhere perfectly placed between sleeping bag and bed covers! Available in a wide range of bright designs, including Harry Potter created after author JK Rowling included the Snuggle Sac in one of the popular book series, the Snuggle Sacs are machine washable (hurrah!) and can be tumble dried at low temperatures overcoming inevitable accidents during toddler years and making them perfect for every night of the year. The Snuggle Sac range has designs for toddlers as they transition from cot to bed in the My First Snuggle Sac and up to children of all ages with the Original Snuggle Sac. Not only does this wonderful invention solve the blankets on the floor problems at night, but they also provide a great deal of comfort when away on long car journeys, staying in different environments such as on holiday, going for a sleepover and even whilst snuggling up to watch their favourite film or read a book. Snuggle Sacs provide a level of comfort and familiarity that children and parents the world over love! They come recommended by thousands of tots the world over, with the highly acclaimed children’s sleep clinic Millpond, even recommending the Snuggle Sac as a sleep saviour. www.snugglesac.com

working mums It’s great being at home with your baby, but often there comes a point where you crave getting back out into the world a little bit, and your bank balance does too! Getting back into work after having a baby can feel totally different, in a good way, however, finding the balance can be tricky, particularly when settling back into your job that you had before babe was born. Many employers though are more than happy to see you back and will understand how your world and commitments have changed. Chat with them, it’s likely you can work something out to keep everyone happy, whether it’s less hours, flexitime or working from home if possible, if you don’t ask you will never know! Or, if you are looking at starting something new, perhaps setting up your own business, franchising is a great supportive way of doing so. with all the existing leg work done and the opportunity to draw on support whenever you need it they can be a great way of getting back into the working world without too much of the stress and worry of starting out on your own.

Help your baby become a water baby….
Child Safety week 23rd -29th June 2014 Bumps & Bashes First aid for parents of babies & children teach first aid living in the real world, so you may not have a first aid kit handy. Unless you are a trained medical professional or first aider I am sure like most parents you have worried what you might do if your child has an accident, chokes on a grape or burns themselves on the kettle. Wouldn’t it be great to have the skills and confidence to know immediately what you could do to stop your child suffering? Some very simple first aid tips. Small burn or Scalds Saturate with cold water for a minimum of 10 minutes, remove jewellery or watches, cover with a non-fluffy sterile dressing, cling firm will do and reassure the child. Never put butter on a burn or scald – it’s an Old Wives’ Tale. Butter is for toast, not for injuries. Also, don’t burst a blister, apply any creams to a scald or touch the burnt area. Fainting If someone faints or is unsteady get them on the floor before they cause more injury to themselves. Lower them to the floor raise their legs and allow fresh air to get to their face. Loosen clothing and reassure them. Don’t put them on a chair with their head between their knees. Nosebleeds Sit the child down, leaning head forward and ask them to pinch the soft part of their nose. Reassure them. If after 10 minutes the bleeding has not stopped, repeat for another 10 minutes. If after 30 minutes the bleeding has still not stopped, get them checked out. Don’t ask them to tilt their head back. First aid kits If you have a first aid kit, mark it “First Aid”. If it’s in an old biscuit tin, it is no good if you are the only person who knows where it is. If it’s on top of the fridge, let everyone know. So you haven’t a kit handy. Improvise Bandages can be replaced by the cleanest thing near you, a Towel, T-shirt or Tea towel will do. (Not tissues) If it’s an injury that’s serious it will need to be looked at by a professional and dressed properly. Plasters: Have lot’s and let’s hope that’s the only thing you will need.

Babies love being in water, after all they have spent 9 months happily floating around in it in the womb! As parents we have the chance to teach our children life skills including swimming, and whilst this can be daunting, our children are amazing and can achieve the most incredible things at a very early age – as parents we just need to believe and overcome our own fears. Water Babies are a growing organisation who understand the immeasurable benefits of baby swimming from a very young age, even from birth! Not only is baby swimming good for babies general wellbeing but it also aids relaxation, increases learning skills, confidence and bonding between you and baby. With Water Babies a highly successful franchise all over the world we would like to introduce to you Tamsin Brewis, who runs your Water Babies locally… Having had a bad experience when learning to swim herself, Tamsin was determined that her own children were not going to be afraid of water and so travelled from Buckingham to London to attend the 30 minute classes each week. After helping to turn her children to the joys of swimming from a very young age she was very keen to share these positive experiences with others and Water Babies provided that perfect opportunity; “My children are grown now but have a huge love for the water and I am convinced that introducing them safely and in a supportive environment at a very young age is the reason for this. I remember so fondly the times when we would go swimming together and since have made it my mission for others to experience its joys too!” Tamsin told us. Backed by a crew of wonderfully patient administrators and a host of brilliant qualified instructors the Water Babies team are thrilled to help your baby discover the fun to be had in water. As well as having completed their nationally accredited in-house training, Tamsin and her team of instructors are all fully qualified ASA/STA swimming teachers and hold registered lifesaver awards, including infant specialisation. So, help your baby to continue their love affair with water, visit www.waterbabies.co.uk for more information, check out the latest info from Tamsin and her team or contact them directly on tel: 01295 709221

The choice is perhaps one of the most appealing aspects of shopping at My Little Munch, with so many of us fed up with the ‘samey stuff’ that we find so often in the main high street shops it was this frustration that led entrepreneur Susan Javed to starting My Little Munch; “It started when I was on maternity leave and looking for products for my soon to be newborn, I was buying all I needed from so many different independent sources and whilst it was great to find these products and support the independent companies by shopping this way, it was a time consuming task and it got me thinking that it would be great to have these companies all in one place.” Susan told us. My Little Munch provides the best of all aspects of shopping online; you get to discover unique, independently made products with the accessibility and ease of purchase you would get from buying online from a store or at a major department store. At My Little Munch you can find a whole host of baby and children essentials and gifts, such as clothing and accessories, personalised jewellery and wall art as well as maternity clothes for mum! little swimmers Swimming for all! Swimming is a truly wonderful form of exercise and what’s great is that it doesn’t discriminate, yes that’s right I did say that - swimming is non-discriminative! Whatever your age, level of fitness, body shape or swimming skills there is a way into swimming for you. For babies there are some fab classes like the excellent ones at Water Babies out there that take you and your bundle of joy swimming from birth if you so wish! Baby swimming is great for you and babe, it gives them confidence, trains the natural reflexes and increases mother and baby bonding time (what’s not to like?!). For toddlers many local pools will offer lessons and fun family splash times to get them active and help confidence in the water whilst they are young, this can be made especially fun and proactive with the use of Monkey Swimmers, Jakabel Swimsuits and the SwimFin (all have the added advantage of parental peace of mind too!) Swimming can also be really beneficial during pregnancy, after a minor injury, the elderly or during a particularly stressful time that your body may be going through, it’s a gentle exercise that takes the weight off your bones and allows for stretching without damage. Of course, you should consult your doctor first, but generally swimming is a great recovery excursive. So, what are you waiting for? Get swimming!

‘Hungry for the Wild’ Which bird's call can warn of an oncoming storm? Which mushroom can you use to light a fire? Do you know? Do your children know? If not, does that matter? These questions are just the tip of the iceberg of what humans have always known about the natural world, since we first inhabited this landmass on the edge of Europe some 800,000 years ago. Half of my generation, growing up in the 70s and 80s, regularly played and roamed in wild places compared to just one in ten today. 2013 finally became the year we could no longer avoid the subject of Nature Deficit Disorder, a term coined by Richard Louv to describe the effect changes in modern lifestyles is having on our children and the starvation that their interaction with the natural environment is having on their well being and health. The National Trust's report 'Natural Childhood', has come out with some frightening statistics last year. On average Britain's children watch more than 17 hours of television a week2, and spend more than 20 hours a week online. There is little doubt that there are some serious problems with 1 in 12 adolescents self harming, 35,000 on anti-depressants and around 3 in 10 children in England aged between 2 and 15 are either obese or overweight. All these problems have been, at least in part, attributed by researchers, to a decrease in the time children spend outdoors compared to previous generations. Depressing stuff. However it's also clear through the evidence of research that the benefits to children that are exposed to nature are overwhelming. They score higher in almost every category, whether concentration and reasoning, or reading and writing, whilst consistently showing general overall behavioral improvement, as well as responsibility, better attitude and leadership. But more importantly their self-esteem , motivation and confidence is higher. However, the long-term effects of this separation from nature not just for us but for the natural world must not be underestimated not least because in the words of Richard Louv “If we are going to save environmentalism and the environment we must also save an endangered species - the child in nature.“ The woods, marshes and wild places are holding their breath. Since 1999 here at WildWise we have been facing the challenge of how to coax these modern teenagers into the great outdoors, coming up with new innovative ways? After all
we are up against a vast marketing machine fluent in keeping kids indoors with video games, facebook, countless television channels and an infinite choice of distractions. Our latest idea is to meet teenagers where they might already be, and run several 5-day camps inspired by the trilogy of books and films the Hunger Games, which is hugely popular amongst this age-group. We realised that at WildWise we already had all the expertise, skills and resources to run camps based on this hugely successful Hunger Games concept, and that this could be just the siren we needed to call the teenagers away from their screens and into the woods. The primal crackle of our bright fireside, the canopy of birdsong, the smell of woodsmoke and the zesty taste of wood sorrell was waiting for them. But there is something else important going on here. Traditionally since the early days of Scouts, bushcraft and messing about in woods has been more in the domain of teenage boys than girls. The real challenge is how to coax teenage girls into participating in these bushcraft and nature awareness skills and thus into a deep nature connective experience. Here's where the Hunger Games becomes the perfect vehicle to attract the attention of the girls. The real hero, or rather heroine, of the story is a strong, capable and generally empowered teenage girl. Not only has this action film got a female lead for once, but one that's not been over-sexualised to provide ‘eye candy’, and to please the marketing suits behind it. Stories, especially blockbusters and bestsellers, which portray young women in this light are far too few and far between. Fortunately the Hunger Games has led to an increased enthusiasm amongst teenage girls to learn these skills and spend time in nature, because they now have a heroine to emulate, someone they can aspire to be like. It should be stressed that these are non-combat courses, both safe and held by an experienced
38
and professional team, whilst still giving teens an authentic ‘edge’ experience. The whole camp including the Arena will be closely monitored by the staff, and no bows and arrows, sticks, spears, knives or any other weapons, or anything that could be used as a weapon are allowed in the Arena. ‘Tributes’ will arrive to our 'Capitol', and spend the first two days camping all together at the 'Training Camp' learning all the wilderness and survival skills they'll need in the 'Arena'. These include fire-making, archery, sneaking and stalking, shelter / den building, camouflage, edible and medicinal plant use, setting snares and nature awareness skills such as using bird language. They will also be winning ‘sponsors’ hoping to get a parachute of goodies into the 'Arena'. On the morning of the third day, pairs of 'Tributes' enter the 'Arena' and the Games begin. Grabbing a backpack from the 'Cornucopia' filled with all the essential survival stuff, such as sleeping bag, basic food, water bottle, something to help make a shelter, and armed with their new trusty weapon of a water pistol with a safe food colour dye in it, they take off into the wildwoods to survive, to make fires, to find food and water, and to 'kill' the other tributes off with their water pistols and nerf guns by stalking, camouflage and sneaking; to become the ‘Victor’. Far from their computer screens it's the ultimate game of Manhunt/ 40-40 /Capture the Flag - a unique and magical time immersed deep in the woods and a truly unforgettable experience. And maybe, just maybe, if you ask them next year which bird can warn you of an oncoming storm or which mushroom you can use to start a fire, they'll look at you with a twinkle in their eye and say that they could tell you, but it would be better if you went to the woods, like our ancestors here have done for 800,000 years, to find out for yourself. www.wildwise.co.uk

Patients conquer cancer with replacement therapy GcMAF
A replacement therapy called GcMAF, which is undergoing pre-clinical trials worldwide, has been proven to eradicate stage four cancer. Symptoms have either improved or been completely eradicated in around 85% of the 700 people who have had cancers ranging from breast, liver and prostate to bladder and ovarian cancer. Results have been most successful in patients who have followed a strict no-sugar diet along with a high intake of Vitamin D3. GcMAF, which stands for Gc-protein-derived Macrophage Activating Factor, was discovered in 1990 by Japanese scientist Dr Yamamoto who found that all healthy humans have natural GcMAF – it kickstarts the immune system to fight disease. Twenty years later, GcMAF has been made available as a replacement therapy by biomedical company Immuno Biotech. Its scientists initially produced First Immune GcMAF and have since developed a more potent protein called GOleic, which takes the GcMAF molecule and combines it with Oleic acid. Widely used as a replacement therapy for cancer, GcMAF’s staggering affects on autism are also detailed in a new book available on Amazon called “Healing the symptoms known as Austism” by Kerry Rivera. GcMAF has been the subject of intense scientific research in recent years. Over 60 peer-reviewed research papers have been produced by 154 scientists who have trialled it on a range of viral and neurological conditions, such as advanced cancer, autism, chronic fatigue syndrome and the rare disorder LMBBS. Scientists at Immuno Biotech published 16 peerreviewed papers in 2013. These have appeared in many prestigious scientific journals including OncoImmunology, Frontiers in Neuroscience and Nutrients, where a paper about GcMAF and cancer cell apoptosis reached the top 5% mostread scientific papers of all time. Scientific director of Immuno Biotech, Professor Marco Ruggiero, has worked with cancer for 30 years and is now having success with an advanced ultrasonography technique to target tumours directly with GcMAF. This is used in its European clinic where all cancer patients have seen the volume of their tumours reduced, This is used in its European clinic where all cancer patients have seen the volume of their tumours reduced by an average of 25% a week. Ruggiero,
Above middle: Jo-Anne Spinks with daughters Ash and Lisa
a medical doctor, says: “GcMAF is not a drug but an essential component of our body, just like the hormone insulin. When we are unable to produce these essential components, a number of diseases arise. All these diseases can be reverted by administration of the missing component. In my opinion, the importance of GcMAF derives from this consideration. It is a physiologic protein that is essential for a very large number of functions in our body.” At the recent GcMAF Immunology Conference in Dubai (Dec 2013), cancer survivors told the audience of doctors and scientists about their experiences with GcMAF. Here, Jo-Anne Spinks (57) tells her story to Achieve Magazine.
‘I thought I was on my last ever holiday’ In 1996, author Jo-Anne Spinks had been told she had a cyst in her breast but that “it wouldn’t kill her”. In October 2012, oncologists told her she had in fact been living with malignant breast cancer, which had metastasized to her liver. The prognosis was two months to live. “I decided to have a last family holiday with my remaining time and booked a holiday in Cyprus with my two daughters and sister,” she recalls. British-born Jo-Anne looked for an alternative to chemotherapy. “Both my parents had died of cancer and in all that time I was surprised there
was still no accepted alternative treatments other than chemotherapy or radiology. I decided against palliative chemo because my liver was too badly affected and my quality of life for two months would have been degraded.” The 57-year-old writer, who admits to hating needles, then found out about GcMAF and started administering it as a small injection in her leg. She also began following the recommended nutritional strategy from Immuno Biotech, which advises taking Vitamin D3 from the sun, avoiding both sugar and carbohydrates, taking exercise and reducing stress. “After the ‘last holiday’ there followed a ‘last birthday’ celebration and then a ‘last Christmas’ until I began to feel like a fraud,” says Jo-Anne, adding: “I appeared and looked in perfect health, living life to the full.” Nine months after being told she would die, Jo-Anne had blood tests that showed her liver function had returned to normal. In August 2013 her Cat scan proved she was cancer-free. “My cancer specialist is amazed at my recovery,” she said. The author of Harvey the Houdini Husky is now working on her second book for the children’s market and lives in Guernsey with her two daughters, Ash and Lisa, and two grandchildren.

How does GcMAF work?
‘Avoid sugar’ if you’re battling cancer, say experts
According to over 80 GcMAF published research papers, all 5 billion healthy people have natural GcMAF inside them – it is a “director” of our immune system. In healthy people, around 10,000 cells a day mutate into malignant or cancerous cells. The natural GcMAF in our bodies instructs our macrophages to eat those diseased cells, and also has four direct effects on cancer. Cancer and other diseases or viruses are therefore destroyed by GcMAF and the immune system, unless they can sabotage it first. They attempt to do that by preventing your body from making your own GcMAF. If successful, that collapses your immune system, and the disease grows unchecked. First Immune GcMAF is a replacement therapy for those who cannot make their own. Taking GcMAF originated as a very small injection – one dose looks like a tiny raindrop. In three weeks of just one GcMAF dose a week, the immune system is rebuilt to above normal strength. New edible forms of GcMAF have now been introduced, such as Bravo Probiotic. This is a yoghurt containing GcMAF, allowing the nutrient to be eaten for the first time. Professor Ruggiero says GcMAF taken in Bravo Probiotic is the same natural GcMAF molecule produced by all healthy humans. He added:
“With the synthesis of natural, fully physiological GcMAF molecules that can be eaten, and with the development of foods naturally enriched in GcMAF, it will eventually become part of an integrated nutritional plan as it was intended by nature during evolution.”
Sugar is “poison” and should be avoided if you are battling cancer, according to a group of top nutrition experts and doctors. Good nutrition is so important for cancer patients, they said, that those on a ‘nutrient-dense’ diet could even cure themselves “from the supermarket shelf”. Dr Emar Vogelaar, a professor of clinical nutrition and former president of the World Health Foundation, told the audience at the GcMAF Immunology Conference [Dec 2013] that: “You are at greater risk of cancer if you have immune deficiency due to an excess of refined foods, sugar and fats that are high in cholesterol, mercury and lead.” He added: “I consider sugar a poison.” The medical expert highlighted “optimal nutrients”, which were most beneficial to cancer patients. “There are 40 nutrients that you don’t make yourself, which you need to get from somewhere else,” he said. Dr Vogelaar recommended Vitamin D – the most important vitamin – as well as Vitamin A, Betacarotene, B1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 11 (folic acid), biotin, Vitamins C, E and K (2-mk7). Amino acids, which the professor recommended, include: Try and Mel, (N-acetyl), Eysteine, Arginine. Essential fatty acids include Omega-3, while semi-essential nutrients recommended include Coenzym Q10. In addition, 45mg of K2 per day, said Dr Vogelaar, was ‘extremely important’ in reducing cancer, especially prostrate. Cancer patients should be getting up to 90% of Vitamin D from the sun, added Professor Marco Ruggiero, scientific director of Immuno Biotech, which gives a nutrition treatment strategy for cancer patients on its website at www.gcmaf.eu. Foods include white meat, fish and vegetables. Vitamin D is thought to be beneficial for cancer patients because it stimulates the immune system, activates macrophages to fight disease and can also help prevent metastases (the spreading of cancer). Sugars that have proven useful for cancer patients include Fucose, which inhibits tumour growth and metastasis, as well as Glucosamine and Mannose, which both inhibit tumour growth. Patients have become cancer-free in a year by taking Immuno Biotech’s GcMAF/Goleic molecules coupled with their nutritional advice. Dr Vogelaar told the audience that if Vitamin D intake increased by just 25mg a day, it would reduce cancer frequency by 50% or more. He also said Vitamin D would reduce the world’s healthcare costs. “For a cost of around €10 a day, patients could take 50mg-75mg of Vitamin D per day and this would reduce total costs in the world’s healthcare system by 16.7%,” he said. Immuno Biotech advises anyone concerned about cancer to avoid its five main causes: 1. Too much sugar 2. Lack of Vitamin D3 3. Poor nutrition lacking in amino acids and trace metals 4. Lack of oxygen and exercise 5. Severe shock stress.

foundation learning Watching your child as he/she start to learn in life is one of the most enjoyable aspects of parenting with all stages bringing their very own set of skills and fun. The Early Years are the years in which they do the most learning, soaking up everything, forming their own skills and confidence levels in the big wide world. As parents it’s our job to support this growth and with many great ways to do this and in particular as your child starts to get to an age where reading becomes part of their learning Phonics can be a great way to support. If your little one attends a nursery or playschool phonics will be something that they may well already be familiar with. The ‘decoding’ process of the written word is part of Phonics and there are some great tools and methods around to help you support it and incorporate it into their playing. Games, books and even interactive technology are all ways that simply help to give your child the ideas and confidence to get reading. Most of us will have been reading nightly to our children so Phonic books are a great way of making the transition into your child being the reader. They are typically fun, approachable and go a long way in creating a confidence in reading early on for your child.

Helping your child discover the joy of independent reading can be achieved through the Jelly and Bean book series. Their combination of humorous stories, striking illustrations and simple words make it a successful and fun reading experience for everyone. Analytic phonics, regular CVC words and ‘tricky’ words are introduced gradually making the learning to read process accessible and challenging all at once. The books allow children to progress within their own capabilities and the engaging stories and characters keep them entertained and motivated to read and learn more. Jelly and Bean books are perfect for schools, both mainstream and specialist, and at home. “I have read a few of the books now with my young daughter and we both love them! We both light that they feel familiar in some way, nothing too complicated or over the top, just simple words to help her identify the sounds and how the words look on the page. She loved the characters and illustrations and after just a couple of reads she really started to recognise the words. I can see that they would be a wonderful way into independent reading for all children, whatever their abilities.” Achieve Writer Emily Kirton comments. www.jellyandbean.co.uk

West London Community College gives the West End a run for its money… West London Community College put on a Christmas play to remember with a piece written by the colleges experienced actor Jamie Foster;
“In previous years we have put on our own adapted versions of plays, this has been the first year where we have written and produced our own. It was a great way of bringing up real life issues and scenarios associated with Autism in an entertaining and therefore memorable way.” Jamie told us. The play, which told the tale of a trip to London for a group of adults with Autism and the highs and lows of their journey, was written by Jamie and performed by students at the college in front of a packed crowd. A storming success Jamie and his drama crew are looking to bring a version of the play to this year’s Edinburgh festival and are seeking out new ways to bring the play to varied audiences in order to entertain and train all at once;
“The play is like a visual training for professionals and individuals alike on how best to respond when learning that an individual has autism and in a given situation. I have done a significant amount of work with the Autism Alert Cards and this play provides a great way of showing professionals and members of the public how real life scenario’s might happen, and how best to respond.” Audiences were cheering as the curtains closed and the effects of the play were positive for everyone involved, from audience member through to the actors, stage help and Jamie himself;
“Everyone worked so hard, I couldn’t be prouder. We rehearsed for a long time and increased the regularity of rehearsals as we neared the performance, the actors were put under quite a lot of pressure but they really pulled it out of the bag and enjoyed it immensely!” www.autismconsultants.org www.annakennedyonline.com

Anna takes on The House of Commons! The Anna Kennedy team peaked with an all new high in November 2013 having attended The House of Commons to deliver a very important report on their vital survey findings and the effects of bullying. The survey, conducted during November of this year, aimed to gather important information from parents regarding the diagnosis stages for those affected by autism. Their aim was certainly achieved with an overwhelming response from parents jumping at the opportunity to tell people of their experiences at diagnosis stage. The resulting survey has been the largest of its kind with over 2,000 responses from people who are affected by an autism spectrum condition. The questions asked were regarding the diagnostic process which ranged from when the condition was first suspected to when the diagnostic process was initiated, and how long it took before it was completed. The survey also addressed the challenges for individuals and families associated with the assessment and the ability of the professionals involved to embrace a constructive, multidisciplinary approach. Participants were also asked to comment on the quality of support they received during the assessment. Anna Kennedy Online came to conduct the survey after experiencing the overwhelming concerns many parents and individuals who have contacted the charity over the years have had regarding the diagnosis process. “What came across was their frustration due to the depressing length of time the whole process was taking given that the books and information
they were reading spoke about how important early intervention is for children on the autism spectrum.” Anna explains. The Autism Diagnosis Survey, which was presented in front of MPs and academic researchers, also showed that of the 76 per cent of families who suspected a child under five may have autism; only 38 per cent were given the diagnosis under five. “The results of this survey clearly demonstrate that the process in place for diagnosing children and young adults is not fit for purpose and requires immediate improvement,” Anna commented. Proud of her team’s efforts as ever Anna was thrilled at the attention the visit provided across social network and the media as it further highlights the need for the current diagnosis system to change. “Parents who manage to negotiate the energy sapping bureaucracy of getting a diagnosis for their child often find that the service provided is disconnected and, in many cases, is of unacceptable quality, it’s time for the process to be shaken up and definitely improved” added Anna. Anna spoke at the event alongside World Kick Box Champion Jo Redman who shared her experiences of bullying and late diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome, as well as vocal coaches to the stars, David and Carrie Grant, whose three daughters are on the spectrum. Kick Boxing Champion Jo Redman offered sound advice to those being bullied at the House of Commons and through various media interviews around the campaign week. “Bullying in any form is not ok or acceptable. It is not ok for anybody to

Education for all…. All the educational facilities at Anna Kennedy Online were created to provide the strong, educational environment that the mainstream simply doesn’t offer to those with Autism. Anna has poured blood sweat and tears into creating environments in which it’s attending children thrive, learn and grow, providing a place in which they receive the education they deserve. It all started in 1999, after Anna was turned away from 26 special needs schools for her two sons. Not one to settle for second best, Anna was hell bent on creating a school environment that was good enough for her sons. So, she re-mortgaged her house and created her own! Yes, you read that right, she built her own school! She transformed a derelict council building in Middlesex, West London into Hillingdon Manor School. Soon supply couldn’t reach the demand and so she later opened Baston House and then further down the line West London Community College, thus creating the perfect, supportive educational environment for her children and plenty of others too from the age of three and a half to 19 and beyond. The success of each school is of course down to Anna’s initial drive and passion to create an environment in which individuals, no matter their age or background, could enjoy education delivered in a way that not only provided a happy environment but a productive one too. These schools deliver for so many individuals and in turn their families, changing their lives for the better. To highlight these positive results we take a look at a couple of case studies from children attending Baston House.

CASE STUDY 1
Jasper Aged 11 Mary McInerney lives in Lewisham with her two children. Jasper, 11, has been attending Baston House School for 18 months. Desperate for an alternative Mary says: “My son Jasper was diagnosed with autism at the age of four. Unfortunately, he was unable to manage mainstream school and by the time he was nine he was extremely distressed and his attendance very poor. The school did not understand Jasper’s needs while the work and the environment were becoming impossible for him to manage. He was continually physically refusing to go to school and trying to hurt himself to avoid having to go. His self-esteem was on the floor and the school responded by taking me to court for his poor attendance, thereby blaming me and ignoring Jasper’s needs. We had hit rock bottom and there was no choice but to take Jasper out of this inappropriate setting which was unable to address his needs.” A positive response It took many months, a great deal of effort and a significant amount of money before Jasper was allocated funding for a place at Baston House but, Mary says, she does not begrudge any of it. “At long last, having struggled so hard for so long in the wrong setting for a child like him, he is able to engage effectively with his education, in a setting he can understand, and where he is understood. His confidence and self-esteem have soared and he is learning much more than he ever has before; because his needs are being addressed so well he is responding very positively and his teachers have high expectations of his academic achievement, as well as his overall well-being.” Understanding the child One thing which Mary especially appreciates about Baston House is the way that the children are treated as individuals with their own particular needs addressed according to their capabilities and interests. “Just because all the pupils are on the autistic spectrum, it does not follow that they should all be treated the same. In Jasper’s case, amongst other things he struggled with concentrating for long periods and has certain sensory issues, so he is allowed to take short breaks from his work, his assignments are broken into smaller ‘bite-sized’ sections, and even the classroom
lighting was changed as the fluorescent strip lights were upsetting to him. This proves to me that Baston fully understands not just my son’s condition, but my son himself, and is prepared to respond in the way which will best serve his needs.” Overcoming hurdles Mary has been greatly relieved to find a school which suits Jasper so well and means he will not have to endure the problems a mainstream secondary setting would most likely have caused him. Nevertheless, she knows that there are more hurdles to overcome. “Like many eleven year old boys, quite often Jasper would prefer not to have to go to school at all and he still sometimes decides he’ll try and get out of it,” she says, “but because he can see that his teachers and I are on his side, working together and committed to him, he accepts the situation and mostly he enjoys being at school - or at least puts up with it! And that is a milestone in itself.” Forward to the future Although Mary does not expect miracles, she is quietly optimistic about what the future might hold for Jasper. “His teachers are very pleased with his progress, and they are excellent at keeping me in touch with everything so that I know what has been going on each day. I genuinely believe that Baston House is helping him to move forward rather than stigmatising him and holding him back because he has autism. I have high hopes that he will be able to live with a measure of independence because of the remarkable support he is receiving from a remarkable school.” CASE STUDY 2
was not used to handling autistic children and they suggested we look for a place elsewhere. However, we persevered and he was able to stay there until the end.” Grey cloud of despair It was a secondary level that Rachelle began to realise that something would have to change. “I was still convinced that Raeshaun would be fine in the mainstream as long as he had appropriate one-to-one support like any child with learning difficulties, but school after school turned us down. I did hours of research trying to find an answer, but had no help from anywhere and it was like a big grey cloud was hanging over me.” Enough is enough Eventually, Rachelle found a school which would accept Raeshaun and was assured that his needs would be fully met in terms of extra help and support. “I was told that he would have a dedicated TA at all times but it soon became clear that this wasn’t happening,” she says. “When I was allowed to meet her I could see that she didn’t have the specialist knowledge to deal with Raeshaun and he obviously wasn’t coping well. Then he started taking time off school, through illness or just because he didn’t want to go and it was only when I spoke to the parents of another child that I discovered he was being bullied. That was enough for me.” Fitting in at last Rachelle approached Baston House which agreed to offer Raeshaun a place. “We went to visit and loved the warm welcome and the fact that they understood exactly what we needed.” Having completed a three-day trial period at Baston, Raeshaun pleaded to be allowed to go there. “He liked it straightaway and felt that he
fitted in,” says Rachelle. “The school was brilliant and managed the transfer very quickly so there was minimal disruption, and for the first time in many months I felt able to relax.” Small steps, big progress Although Raeshaun has only been at Baston for a few weeks, family and friends have noted a marked difference in him. “There has been a dramatic change,” explains Rachelle. “He used to go to school because he had to, now he actively enjoys it. He understands his lessons whereas before he often shut himself off and he is taking a real interest in what he is learning. At home he is much happier, sleeps better and is more affectionate, so the move to Baston has had a very positive effect on us all.”

Raeshaun Aged 12 Rachelle lives in Lewisham with her three children, the eldest of whom, Raeshaun, is twelve years old. Sink or swim? When choosing a school for a child there are many things to take into account, but for a parents with a child on the autistic spectrum the decisions can be much more difficult. Whilst some children with the condition may flourish in a mainstream setting, others will struggle and some may fall between the two categories. This was the situation in which Rachelle found herself with her son, Raeshaun. “We decided to send Raeshaun to a mainstream primary school and for the first few years we had no major problems,” she says. “Although he had some speech delay and a short attention span, the small and fairly informal environment suited him well and we were happy with the decision.” Rachelle lives in Lewisham with her three children, the eldest of whom, Raeshaun, is twelve years old. Rachelle despaired of finding the right school for her son until she discovered Baston House “It was only as he got older that things started to get more difficult as the school

Giving Back Control One of the hardest factors for someone with complex mental health needs is the feeling of lack of control. Letting the patient make small decisions can really help make them feel like they are in control, for example encouraging them to choose their clothing, even if it did not match.
move forward.
Set Appropriate Limits While giving a patient the opportunity to exercise control is encouraged, it’s also necessary to set limits to ensure everyone’s wellbeing and safety while trying not to single the service user out .
Freedom Care adopt a person centered care approach with all of their service users. Person centered care sees the patient as an equal partner in the planning, developing and assessing of care to make sure it’s the most appropriate for their specialist care needs. Key to this process is putting the patient and their families at the heart of all decisions.
Recognise Courage With many illnesses, such as cancer, we view suffers as courageous, yet the same courtesy is not shared with individuals with mental illness. It takes enormous courage to live with certain mental health issues day in and day out, which is why it’s so important for them to have the support of family or friends. The importance of Hope Next to “love”, “hope” is an emotion that can drive individuals forward even in their darkest hour. Encouraging your loved one to continue with treatment as it will help them live a purpose filled and happy life will give them the drive to
As primary care specialists, Freedom Care understand the issues families with complex health needs face. They offer support and a safe space for a resident to develop themselves, whether through hobbies or interest or through further education.
The main aim of a person centered care approach is to be primarily service user focused. Based on a strong team philosophy they encourage independence and autonomy as well as provide choice and control. Every service user’s specialist care needs are taken into account with a bespoke programme designed for each patient. The main elements of person centered care is:
greater involvement of people in their own care. ● Shared decision making – this requires the involvement of patients as equal partners in their specialist care. Tools to support shared decision making can include self-management support, access to personal health records, personal health budgets, care planning and shared treatment decisions. ● Collective patient and public involvement – this is about involving people in decisions about the design and delivery of services. Through a person centered care approach, their specialist care services teams help to teach every one of their service users valuable life skills; helping them make informed decisions and lifestyle choices.

Gaining the skills for an Independent Life ‌ For a young person with disabilities, complex needs or autism it is likely that their life goals will be the same as other young people. Living an independent fulfilled life, achieving personal goals, and experiencing rewarding relationships are important for any young person as they consider their future.
70
The dedicated team at the Together Trust are so committed to providing the tools which allow these aspirations to be achieved they developed a purpose built college for students aged 16 to 25 years old.The inclusive learning environment enables young people to make the transition to adulthood with improved knowledge, independence and strong communication skills. The Together Trust has supported a range of young people from across the North West and surrounding areas for over 20 years, and its new state-of-the-art Bridge College allows the charity to roll out its services and expertise in a pioneering and bespoke environment.
Situated adjacent to The Manchester College in Openshaw, Bridge provides its students with the tools and confidence to gain independence, qualifications and inclusion within their community and it’s with this ethos that every member of staff approaches each day. These promises to all students are made and met without exception year on year. All students follow an individualised curriculum; the college provides learning pathways which are tailored to each young person’s aspirations. Every student that joins Bridge begins their journey by working with their tutors to decide
what their goals are and how they can be achieved during the time they spend at Bridge. For example, a young person with ASC may aspire to work in a garden centre. To achieve this goal they may need to learn how to communicate effectively - perhaps through electronic communication aids - build their confidence and gain experience of horticulture and the working world. Another student, who is a sensory learner, may want to develop their independence skills through expressing choice and control. Building communication skills which allow them to interact in different environments is also essential to extend their opportunities for friendships and social inclusion. Students are supported to build the skills they need to equip them for their future through use of the activities of daily living flat which is fully adapted with technology promoting access for all. Travel and shopping training, healthy eating and meal preparation also support learners to develop independent life skills. Each student will require different support, and will be helped to achieve their aims through person centred pathways, which may include: arts and media, horticulture, catering and hospitality and sports and outdoor activities. Many students are also supported with vocational learning through internal and external work experience. In addition, therapy and medical support is embedded across the curriculum at Bridge to ensure that students have maximum
opportunities for learning. A team of Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Clinical Psychology and nurses offer a multidisciplinary approach to enable students to experience optimum health and wellbeing. Specialist facilities give students additional learning opportunities, through participation in hydrotherapy, rebound therapy and sessions in the interactive emmersive space. The team at Bridge College strives to achieve excellence to ensure a high quality experience for all of its learners. Bridge holds the Makaton centre of Excellence Mark and is currently working towards accreditation with the National Autistic Society. The Bridge College team also collaborate with the young peoples’ families, as well as other services, to ensure the skills and experiences gained while at Bridge can be continued once the young person leaves. Families are offered specialist training in the communication methods that their young people use such as Makaton signing or electronic communication aids to ensure they continue to benefit from effective communication opportunities as they progress into adulthood. Work placements set up by Bridge aim to continue beyond, for example a student placement within a local charity shop will continue to be available for that young person, with support coming from their family and support services after they finish Bridge College. This diverse and comprehensive approach
enables all Bridge students to gain and sustain the skills and experiences that are important to them and that will have the greatest impact on their life. Each Bridge team member sees it as their responsibility to discover ways in which a student can thrive now and in their future, and build on skills they already have but may lack the confidence to use. This gives individuals the tools they need to fulfil their potential and the confidence to go out into the world and live life to its fullest. Lisa Duncalf, Bridge College principal, told us: “It’s our job to ensure that every student who attends our college is listened to and cared for in a way that gives them confidence in their own abilities. We always plan for the future with each student, to determine where they want to be in life, and then find ways in which we can get them there. “A student’s time at the college may only be three years, but its impact lasts much longer. Hopefully the lessons they learn with us stay with them for the rest of their lives. It’s a very rewarding process and one which each member of the team truly values.” Find out more about Bridge College and the other work that Together Trust do at www.togethertrust.org.uk Bridge College t: 0161 487 4293

The Importance of Social – Sexual Training
Specialist Education Services Award: The Hesley Group
Many people with complex learning needs have difficulties in understanding the rules around social relationships and intimacy. Problems with memory and language development in addition to poor comprehension of certain concepts; such as touch, can contribute to these learners struggling with staying safe in relationships and social situations.
Hesley Group has been changing lives since it was established in 1975, offering the best possible care, education and vocational opportunities for young people and adults with autism, learning disabilities and complex needs with behaviour that may challenge. Their services offer a lifeline for the people who use them as well as their families, friends and carers. It’s for these reasons that we awarded them with our Specialist Education Services accolade. The Hesley Group offers many strings to its bow and its two schools are at the heart of its important work. Fullerton House and Wilsic Hall offer specialist, mixed gender, residential and day schools, providing expert and positive, flexible education and care for up to 52 weeks per year. With over 20 years of experience, the schools are highly regarded and intended to be enriching environments for all who attend. The holistic approach at both schools is much more than simply a notion: it works through a carefully designed Individual Learning/Education Plan based on each young person’s needs and aspirations. Plus, Hesley Group also offer these important provisions to adults too with an Independent Specialist College for young adults aged 19-25, providing the same high level of commitment to person-centred, outcomefocussed, quality driven care and support for adults, aged 18 years and over, as do the group’s schools, with all adult services boasting excellent facilities, including single person and small group accommodation and welcoming, safe and thriving environments for all.
In order to support these learners to develop and maintain successful relationships Pyramid Educational Consultants are bringing a new programme to the U.K. The SoSAFE! Programme is a visual teaching tool which enables learners to develop their abilities in managing; and communicating about their relationships. The program covers all degrees of interaction; right through from a student’s expectations of strangers, to the intricacies of an intimate relationship. Students are provided with a framework from which they can categorise and develop their relationships. In all of this work emphasis is placed upon the giving and receiving of consent using easily accessible language. All of this information is portrays in a format which is portable and easy to understand, so that any student can discuss their relationships at an opportune time. In addition to this framework for relationships the SoSAFE! toolbox also provides students with a reliable method of reporting abuse. By initially giving students a set of ‘rules’ for different relationships they are better placed to realise when a relationship may not be acceptable. Designed to be implemented by all who work with a student, delivered in both individual and group sessions; this person centred approach is a great way of teaching students to develop and manage a wide range of relationships. 01273 609555 www.pecs-unitedkingdom.com

Out of the Dark charity put into the spotlight at The Wellbeing Symposium 2013 A charity that helps youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds to restore furniture and build life skills will be showcasing their work at The Wellbeing Symposium 2013. Jay and Jade Blades will bring young people involved with their project Out of the Dark, to show how by restoring furniture, confidence and self-esteem can also be developed or restored. The Wellbeing Symposium 2013 event is being held in November in Maidstone and will focus on how wellbeing in both the workplace and at home can have a huge effect on many different areas in people’s lives. It will also look at how a focus on wellbeing in young people has a longlasting effect throughout life – which Out of the Dark will highlight. Over the last 3 years, the couple has worked with 48 young people, teaching them how to salvage, restore, recycle and revamp old furniture. With the practical skills, also comes confidence and self-esteem. Furniture is salvaged, or clients can bring their own pieces in and work with the charity to realise its revamp potential. The young people learn skills from Jay’s building
background and Jade’s interior design career, which can lead them to employment. A work ethic is instilled and for some, keeps them away from crime and develops them into employable people with stable wellbeing. Of the 48, nine are now employed in full time jobs, 12 have stayed on with the project as trainees and a further five are paid workers on the project. Jay and Jade will bring some of the trainees from their base in High Wycombe, to showcase their skills and show how a bit of practical and structured intervention can help change the direction of a young person’s life. Jade said: “We are really excited to take part in The Wellbeing Symposium, as we have found that it is important to find different ways of helping the community to achieve an improved sense of wellbeing.” “Our project really increases the wellbeing of teenagers through craft activities that have a therapeutic effect on them.”
people’s confidence and self-esteem. “We are looking forward to sharing our experience with the delegates and speakers at this event.” The Wellbeing Symposium 2013 will offer various sessions and activities that focus on the health and wellbeing of young people. These will cover topics including teenage conception, drugs, self-harm and mental health. One particular workshop will focus on the role of drama-based learning in schools and will provide tools to engage young audiences in discussion of health and wellbeing. A further session, hosted by Golding Vision, the community arm of housing association Golding Homes, will introduce delegates to a project that forms working partnerships between schools, healthcare providers and other businesses. Other topics that will be discussed at the pioneering event include nutrition education, workplace wellbeing, happiness, health in housing, engaged prevention and ergonomics.

Crelling Harnesses manufacture a large range of belts and harnesses designed to provide postural support for both children and adults with special needs.
Davina's story Davina lives in one of Epilepsy Society's residential care homes. She has complex epilepsy and is on the autism spectrum. She has difficulty processing everyday sensory information such as sounds, sights and smells. ‘For many years Davina lived at home with a loving family who were tired and barely coping. The day service that Davina attended was not equipped to provide the specialist care and support that she needed. As a result Davina was disengaged from others in the group. Staff at the day service were unable to take her out into the community due to her challenging behaviour. Last year, after many years of fighting, Davina’s parents were finally able to secure a comprehensive care and support package with Epilepsy Society to meet her needs. Our specialist support team provide roundthe-clock care for Davina. As well as achieving better control of her seizures she is supported to communicate and cope with her sensory processing difficulties. Now Davina attends college and goes out on regular trips. Receiving the right care and support package not only means that she is able to live a full life, but her parents also feel confident their daughter is safe and happy. Time together as a family is now quality time.’ Chris Harben 'House Manager'

My Story
We are a small and friendly company and are happy to discuss our harnesses on a one to one basis with our customers.
This is why I raise funds for MD Making A Difference. Please have a look and donate.
Many harnesses are suitable for those with learning difficulties or behavioural problems offering a certain degree of restraint and alternative buckles to the instant release press button type for those with inquisitive fingers or potential escapologists. Rear fastening harnesses are available for single seats only.
I have had MS for 25 years now and I use a Mybility All Terrain stand up wheelchair full time now. My challenge is to complete the Oxford Town and Gown 2014 “standing” in my wheelchair. My personal challenge is to deal with the 24-7 pain in my legs, the extreme fatigue I feel, and the muscle stiffness that overcomes me with such a physical 10K challenge. To be honest all of this is bearable because my main priority is to raise funds and awareness about Muscular Dystrophy and the people that it affects who are dear to me.
Our vehicle harnesses are not designed as safety harnesses but as disabled persons’ restraints, to help maintain the passenger in an upright sitting position when travelling. The existing vehicle safety belt should always be worn over the top of our harness to comply with safety regulations. The only exception would be when the passenger is exempt from wearing the safety belt for medical reasons and holds a certificate of exemption which can be obtained from their doctor or consultant where appropriate. Crelling harnesses are suitable for use with all kinds of equipment including vehicles. Model 27 harness has become very successful for children and adults travelling on aircraft seats. This harness provides additional postural support when used with the standard aircraft safety belt and is approved for passenger use by most airlines. We make a range of walking reins to help control and protect children and adults when walking outdoors. We also supply belts for wheelchairs, bathing equipment and more. The challenge and mental fortitude is perhaps what drives me, but more importantly being able to participate as a wheelchair user, so others perhaps can think about participating. Raising funds for Muscular Dystrophy (specifically Duchennes) is a cause that is dear to my heart. (hi James Smith and John Dickson), as well as hopefully encouraging others to participate. Why Not anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Racing is just a small step. Participating with other runners is a fantastic feeling, the atmosphere on the day is invigorating. I enjoy it just like everyone else, which is why I what to encourage other wheelchair users to join in and raise funds for charity. Visit my JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/mybilitywheelchairs

Be prepared with Medpac
Be seen and safe with the VisiBag There are over 300,000 mobility chairs, scooters and wheelchair users in the UK alone, and this number is rising. Whilst they give users added independence and freedom there are circumstances which could potentially be dangerous for them, for example, when using a mobility chair or scooter to cross the road or simply being amongst pavement traffic can cause problems because of the height of the chairs. A company called "Safer to be Seen" started looking into this problem three years ago and came up with a durable, stylish, universal nylon bright bag with reflective strips that fits all scooters, chairs, wheelchairs and rolling walkers. The "VisiBag” is a stylish rucksack that attaches to all mobility vehicles as well as wheelchairs and rollators. The bag includes an added separate accessory - the stick holder which fits securely to either side of the bag. So, the Visibag provides the perfect practical yet stylish safety solution for all mobility and scooter users. £23.50 which INCLUDES DELIVERY! Stick holders are £4.99 each or two for £8.00. 07855788727
