Rufus Rabbit for gifts everyone will love… We all know the worry that sets in when it comes to finding that perfect gift for the new bundle of joy in the family or friendship circle, or indeed for babe’s first, second and third birthday. You don’t want to find something that someone else will be buying too, but want something thoughtful, well made and unique. You certainly don’t want to buy an item of clothing that mum’s not keen on and yet you know you want to buy something that not only provides the wow factor but that will get used and loved too. Well, with all this in mind let us take this opportunity to lighten your gift buying woes by introducing to you ….Rufus Rabbit and his friends! The Rufus Rabbit collection from the rather lovely Little Dog Company ticks all the right new baby gift boxes with ease, and now we mention it, it ticks all the baby gift buying boxes whatever the occasion. The unique collection features Rufus Rabbit romper suits, soft toys, organic nightwear, bunting, money boxes, comforters, soft first shoes and perfectly matching cards to accompany. The Rufus range has an emphasis on the original, high quality and refreshingly affordable – your gift recipients will be hopping for joy! Rufus’ personality is that of a cheeky chap who likes to tell facts that are loosely based on real life and shows his humour through the greetings cards and gifts throughout his collection. The Rufus comforters and soft

toys are our particular faves, buy them in the happy knowledge that to the recipient they may well become that friend for life – you know the one, the one that gets lovingly dragged everywhere and needs a wash to be able to be seen in public at least once a month! Rufus is the perfect companion for any tot. “Rufus Rabbit began life as a greeting card character inspired by a pub promotional menu and Anna’s habit for improvised fact creating to support her theories! He proved an instant hit with our card customers and it wasn’t long before we felt he could be developed into a baby gift range. 12 prototype toy creations later and our Rufus finally became a three dimensional, huggable squashy bunny and we’ve been dedicated to all things Rufus ever since. He’ll celebrate his 3rd birthday in September and our commitment to creating wanted gift items of high quality is still at the top of our tick list. The honour of a Rufus Rabbit becoming a little ones No.1 choice of comfort hug is utterly mind blowing and makes all the hard work worthwhile. We are always thinking of practical, humourous and gorgeous ways to grow the Rufus range and are literally bursting with excitement at where Rufus could go next, he has definitely established himself as the funny bunny at The Little Dog.” A Little Dog told us.

Nubie Boutique owner Amanda helps you inject some cool into your kiddie's space! Decorating the children’s spaces in your home is no easy task. You want it to be fun and vibrant for them but also subtle enough to work with the rest of the décor in your home. At Nubie we have a range of carefully selected furniture and accessories to help create a child friendly space that everyone will love with storage solutions, décor and accessories too. Storage is one of the key areas that so many parents come to us for help with, finding a place to put all those toys away neatly yet with an element of cool to it too is a tricky one but we have some great and clever ways to store away with some pieces even colour coded or character codes; allowing your children to access their things easily but creating cleaner lines in the home. For those all too tricky ways in which to create a seamless look from room to room we look to some of our most cutting edge modern designers such as Ferm Living who started with products for adults and as they had their own families have brought out children's ranges too - so they have a cool but stylish element to them that’s usually hard to find. We have your accessories covered and want to stress how you don’t always need to spend a great deal on a space to transform it for the better. With a few of our wall stickers, the odd interesting cushion and quirky bedding you can create a wonderful stylish bedroom or nursery without breaking the bank! Even if you aren’t looking for pieces for your home, we have some great gift ideas for friends and family all of which would be a delight to receive. I always like to think that with our online boutique we are offering parents the often much needed drop of fresh air in the world of children’s décor in giving them stylish pieces that both children and adults will love….

goods, Inch Blue is an oasis for
lovers of originality, quality and fun. Inch Blue’s soft leather shoes have been adorning the feet of babies and toddlers since 1999 and this year, the brand is celebrating its 15th year. The brand’s co-founder, Rhiannon Owen, saw a gap in the market and so she went for it. When she started out, Rhiannon did everything herself and even taught herself how to make the shoes. She had always been creative and to this day continues to design the styles. She overcame plenty of hurdles to make Inch Blue the success it is today with stockists worldwide, including Harrods.

Inch Blue’s factory is located in Wales and the shoes are all hand-stitched on site. They are made using Chrome 6-free leather, which is not only super soft, but is very safe for babies. The shoes are now also available up to six years as young children also benefit from wearing Inch Blue shoes at home or at nursery where the floors might be cold or slippery. The non-slip suede soles ensures that little ones are confident on their feet and the concealed elasticated strap means that shoes stay on the feet at all times! To mark its 15th birthday, Inch Blue has reintroduced some of its most popular designs and has also introduced some new styles which will be sure to become future classics! www.inch-blue.com

Polka layering body 2 pack, £15
busy peas
A healthy start with Busy Peas… With new guidelines stating that for healthy bodies we need to be consuming 7 varieties of fruit and veg everyday the pressure is on for us parents to encourage this way of thinking with our children. One of the best ways to show your children the ways of good nutrition is of course to lead by example, but what if you could supplement these healthy practices with an educational yet fun range of baby and toddler products all designed to put more fun into the grow your own concept? Busy Peas is a wonderful collection of unique baby clothing and toddler toys, books and gifts which does exactly that! Born from Designer Jayne Liston’s’ creative imagination the capsule collections features unique vegetable and fruit characters to not only be cute for the wearer but also educational too; “I have been a womanswear designer for many years, but only recently went back to designing children’s clothing and I truly love it! The Busy Peas concept grew from the aim to combine a passion for fashion with an educational message for young children. The fun colours and patterns created with the fruit and vegetables on babies clothing realised this as a form of nutritional education for the wearers and families too. I love the fact that each piece carry’s a fun message and if my designs help just a few people along the way to make eating healthier a more natural choice then I am happy!” Jayne told us. It was through gradually creating the unisex childrenswear that the fruit and vegetables
became alive as characters and Jayne began writing and illustrating accompanying stories, all of which hold educational and moral messages whilst being fun and colourful for the children to enjoy; “I try to create each story so that first and foremost it’s fun for the reader and the toddler to enjoy, secondly that the message is a positive moral one. All the stories help to shape an idea of friendly fruit and vegetables, of growing your own and that kindness and consideration for others always pays off!” Jayne enthused. The ranges are made using very high quality materials with clothing 100% soft cotton and the books on high gloss paper with bright, colourful toddler eye catching print. Babywear featuring the strawberries, carrots, peas, tomatoes and aubergines, all in ones and bibs and booties too are adorable and provide a fun yet wearable, comfortable collection for your baby or as the perfect gift. Speaking of which, the gift pod collections are perfect for that special new-born in your life, choose from the Gift Pod or Luxury Collection where you can find a complete range of your favourite character in clothing and accompanying accessories and story. Or, if you can’t find what you are looking for contact Jayne for a bespoke gift service, ideal for the expectant work colleague group present! Organics Thinking and purchasing in a greener way has been part of many of our lives for some time now, and the number of us looking for more green products for our children is on the increase. Often, eco-friendly products are not only better for the environment but are also better for ours and babies well-being too. For example, many eco-friendly products avoid the use of harsh chemicals, which of course is better for us too and often these manufacturers make products that are not only kinder to the skin, they are also kinder to our insides too. Less chemicals=happier bodies. This issue we bring you some of these fab green companies who consider the well-being of the environment and your tots all at once, we have baby toiletries, reusable nappies, wooden toys and much more besides‌. Las Iguanas are working with local schools to spread the word about healthy living, and what better way than to start with children. They are teaching children how to plant seeds and saplings and grow fresh produce and then teaching them how to use what they have grown in dishes that they can make at home. Las Iguanas' feel that as a restaurant they have a social responsibility to educate and pass on information like this to local schools. The children have a great time whilst learning and it creates a sense of community. Quote from Gemma Holmes, Project Co-Ordinator: "I feel the planting session on Tuesday and the cookery session on Wednesday were two of the best that we have carried out so far. I have been doing this for a year now and feel more confident and more organised in the planning stages and also in the practical part of it too. I have built a strong relationship with Carpenters School, especially with Jenna Cooke the teacher at Carpenters that I work with and that is really what makes it so successful, and of course, the children who are always so well behaved and excited to take part and learn" www.iguanas.co.uk @lasiguanas

Planning what to take with you as a family is never easy, especially if it’s for two adults and young children, the list can appear endless! Packing smart is the key, if you are going somewhere with launderette facilities nearby, consider this when packing all your wardrobes, is that 5th swimsuit entirely necessary if there are washing facilities where you are headed?! Is there a cot where you are going or would a nifty fold up cot be needed? Are you travelling by car for a lot of the journey? Consider their car seat- is it as comfy as can be for a big journey? Gift Guide Buying gifts for the children in your life is never an easy task, whether they are your close family or a friend of the family it’s hard to know how to find something unique that both child and adult will like that doesn’t cost the earth and will last! Arghhh! Where do you start?! Outside of the box we say! Consider things that are made from materials that last (so less plastic!), go for a traditional toy route, or things that spark their imagination like a playhouse or tent or dressing up clothes. Choose well-made teddy’s for the little ones to mark special occasions or consider useful items that a mother will love for her new-born like the genius nappy cakes. Whatever you decide we have some ideas to help you along the way….

Eve’s Toy Shop: A delight for all Discovering toys for your child that you both love, which are well-made, look attractive in the home and are affordable is typically no easy task, especially in a market which is so dominated by plastic, plastic and more plastic! Eve’s Toy Shop was established over ten years ago by one mum’s realisation that she couldn’t be alone in her quest to find beautiful toys that are built to last. Owner Jane had worked with children in a professional capacity for many years and after raising four of her own little people decided to realise her dream of bringing high quality toys at affordable prices to the UK market.
knights, castles and dragons, dolls, farms and fairies too! There is something for every young person’s tastes or passions yet the common theme amongst them all is their lasting quality and the value for your money that all too often their plastic alternatives lack. By discovering the Eve’s Toy shop collection you will find hours of fun, whether through educational games, toys to spark imaginative play or cuddly toys which will become firm favourites. As a parent or grandparent you will delight in bringing gifts to the much loved child in your family that they will cherish for years and perhaps even generations to come.
The boutique and online shop is a source of joy for all who shop there, not only will you find toys which will delight adults and children in near equal measures but you will also discover that the shop itself is a play mecca for all who visit with a toy train setup, a book corner and regular visits from favourite toy characters and even real bunnies at Easter! Jane sources all the toys herself and takes great pride in bringing well-made European toys to the UK market. Within the shop and online you can find ranges from Brio with their world class Train Sets, Galt with their fun Jigsaws, beautiful wooden dolls houses, books, arts and crafts, Lego,
“I love knowing that when a parent or child spends their money on our toys that they are taking home pieces that will bring them all such joy. It’s a wonderful industry to work in and I never tire of finding toys that I know our customers will adore!” Jayne enthused.

Shetland Teddy Bears go Organic!
“Food glorious food, we’re anxious to try it.” Yeah right. Mealtimes in my home are a lively affair. Actually battlefield and carnage is more apt with a liberal splash of maternal misery thrown in for good measure. Before parenthood I never knew that feeding my four little boys would be so emotionally and mentally draining. It’s hard not to take it personally when the meals you have put so much planning time and effort into creating are met with “don’t like it” even before the fork touches their lips. The utter deflation when your recipe stalwarts are suddenly, overnight relegated to the bin of disgusting. What do you mean you don’t like pasta? Or potato? Or rice? Faced with the joyous task of providing balanced and nutritious “7 a day” meals (because 5 portions obviously wasn’t hard enough) to children who have all shown a distinct lack of interest in sitting and eating, it’s somewhat amusing that “What’s for dinner?“ is the repeated question at the start and end of each school day. And yet when my dulcet tones ring out with the call for DINNERTIME, at least one of them will be mysteriously struck down with tummy ache, a full bladder, extreme fatigue or whimpering tears and not that I’m suffering from paranoia but I’m beginning to suspect that a deliberate policy of hating their siblings favourite meal choice has recently been employed. Then to rub salt in the wound there is the out of time, fallback meal option. The one that is always met with full clear plates approval, the one that makes a mockery of all my healthy home-baked efforts; fish fingers and beans. As I sit there praying Jamie doesn’t pop up with a camera crew I smile ironically at the chorus of yum yum’s that ring out from the brood. And what have I learnt from the numerous feeding strategies over the last 8 years? Well, it’s just not worth crying over chicken goujons! My latest dinner time tactic goes by a wall sticker that reads:Today’s Menu, Eat it or Starve. However I had to smother a smile when my 5 year old took one look at his plate, turned to me and declared “I choose starve”. Round 3790 to him! www.rufusrabbit.co.uk

Why not make it your business? The Sticky Fingers Cookery Parties format has been a great success since it launched in 2008. The idea evolved when I was asked to run children’s parties in my deli-café and has grown and developed since that date. Before creating the Sticky Fingers brand, I worked as a tutor and Programme Manager for my local authority Adult Education Service. Food hygiene, teacher training and family learning cookery were three of my teaching specialities. These firm foundations, and the success I have enjoyed in my own business, gave me the knowledge and confidence to help others. So anyone looking for flexible working hours who enjoys basic cookery and working with children, can be given the training and support required to run their own cookery party business. Over time, I have developed the parties in response to requests from busy families who are looking for a stress-free day to remember for their child’s birthday. Parties include all equipment, party tea, invitations, party bags and 2 full hours of cookery and related activities. The children are able to take their creations home with them at the end of the party. I am now thrilled to announce I have my first Franchisee in place with a possible second one joining me soon. They will be able to grow their business in their exclusive territories at a rate that suits them – and they will be buying into a brand that has already enjoyed success in the Midlands. Interested? Providing Maths English and Science Tuition for students in Key Stage 2 through to A-Levels Reading with your child is not only a wonderful, bonding experience but it’s also vital to their educational development. In a world dominated by technology it can all too often feel like our days are filled with screens, even for the little ones. Helping your child discover the joy of reading can be achieved through the Jelly and Bean book series. Reading with your child helps to develop their speech, spark their imagination and provide valuable lessons about the world too. The Jelly and Bean book series does all these things and more. Their combination of humorous stories, striking illustrations and simple words make it a successful and fun reading experience for everyone. Analytic phonics, regular CVC words and ‘tricky’ words are introduced gradually making the learning to read process accessible and challenging all at once. The books allow children to progress within their own capabilities and the engaging stories and characters keep them entertained and motivated to read and learn more. Jelly and Bean books are perfect for schools, both mainstream and specialist, and at home.

“I have read a few of the books now with my young daughter and we both love them! We both like that they feel familiar in some way, nothing too complicated or over the top, just simple words to help her identify the sounds and how the words look on the page. She loved the characters and illustrations and after just a couple of reads she really started to recognise the words. I can see that they would be a wonderful way into independent reading for all children, whatever their abilities.” Achieve Writer Emily Kirton comments. www.jellyandbean.co.uk

Discover the perfect outdoor Learning Environment with Petrow Harley Getting the most from an outdoor learning environment is a complex task and one best left to those with a mass of experience. Petrow Harley are the ones not only with 18 year’s worth of experience but can also bring their experiences of having designed and completed over 50 school projects. Having developed a collaborative and ideas led approach to every aspect of their designs, including environmental ones which often occur when making changes to an outdoor space, they are renowned for their innovation, technical abilities and commitment to getting it right every time. Above all they listen, listen and listen again to the schools needs. With many schools requiring expansion and improvement of their outdoor spaces, whether from an increase in the number of SEN pupils or with the demise in BSF Funding, there are now very few new schools being built and so many schools are turning to expansion within their existing school campus to accommodate new buildings. This is particularly the case where the school is funded by Local Authority and budgets are tightened. From Petrow Harleys experience these new built extensions do not include any meaningful improvements to the outdoor spaces. More often than not capital budgets only allow for sterile areas of grass and tarmac. It seems that we have not moved on since the 1970’s when Petrow Harley directors were at school! A really good outdoor learning environment should be: - accessible for all - offer valuable opportunities for learning - provide well designed and safe spaces for socialising and exercise - improve behaviour and confidence of pupils whist reducing management concerns for teachers It’s the belief at Petrow Harley that all teachers should feel confident in their outside space and its abilities to help them deliver the curriculum and play to improve the lives of their pupils. Grounds created with this ethos are inspiring, well-designed spaces that are easy to maintain, they embody the schools values and enhance the lives of the users. Improving the outdoor learning space is a highly cost effective exercise and the benefits are endless when it comes to a pupil’s well-being, health and welfare. It’s these core values which shape each and every project
34
that Petrow Harley works on. So, how to make it happen? All teachers’ day to day life is very busy indeed and when faced with the potentially complex and time consuming task in redesigning and then building a new outdoor educational space they could simply be put off by the sheer magnitude of it all. Petrow Harley do all they can to take off this heavy load and really help by working with the school in designing and consulting with you to produce an exciting, unique but realistic design along with costing and budget work. The process is very much a collaborative experience yet the team know when and how to take off certain responsibilities and stressful aspects from you. After a design process has been completed the team then invite quotes and project manage everything in order for you to have an independent and impartial understanding of the costs involved.
How to Start
Here is a three Step approach that is manageable and engages the school community:
1 Vision Plan
Start by writing down all the activities, wishes and uses that the school would like to see happening in the school grounds. These can be as diverse as the school itself and offers a great chance to engage the school community in this exercise. Pupils can be asked to draw pictures, write stories or use any other medium that allows expression of these ideas.
construct first there are broadly two options to consider. Using a Design and Build Playground Company or instructing an experienced Landscape Architect to work up the scheme and invite competitive quotations and then project manage the scheme on your behalf.
Design and Build Play Builders
There are a number of reputable Play Ground suppliers who offer a “free survey and design” service in the hope that a school will then instruct them to supply and build a play area. There are times when a free design is very tempting and a school can ask say three firms to produce a scheme and then pick one that they feels offers the best scheme within a set budget.
Engage an experienced Landscape Architect to use this information (the brief) to produce a Vision Plan of the school grounds. This will show in graphic form how these wishes can be translated into a learning environment. Usually there will be an open exchange of ideas and several meetings until the school are happy with the overall vision for its outdoor learning environment.
For some schemes this is a valid method in choosing a contractor. However, play companies want to sell equipment and the choice and range of learning opportunities may be limited to what each company supplies. Each company will be presenting a different scheme there is no direct cost comparison and establishing who is offering best value for money can be difficult. However, if a schools vision plan includes mainly fixed off the shelf play equipment this can be a useful way in realising a scheme.
2 Phasing and Costing
Landscape Architects
Once the Vision Plan is completed it can be publicised and each area of the schools proposals can be costed to set a budget and timescale for completion. This can also be a very useful document to use when approaching external funders.
3 Building
Once you have all decided which area to
An experienced Landscape Designer will work up your Vision Plan and produce the necessary information to allow contractors to submit a competitive price. This will include minimising the use of resource intensive materials; reducing construction costs and where possible developing new income streams. In other words - delivering value, creatively.
Perseid Lower School – Phase 1, 2, 3 & 4 This is a current project that followed the three step plan above. The vision plan was agreed with the school and then divided into four separate, but linked phases. This allowed the school to develop each area as funds became available, but ensured that the finished project phases all joined as a cohesive whole. The key success included: - transforming steep unusable slopes and redundant areas into new areas of valuable educational space - Reclaiming outdoor space left unusable by school extension works - Creating a series of safe, versatile linked spaces that include integrated learning and play experiences
Landscape Architects charge a professional fee for this service and this cost is normally recouped by the competitive tendering of the works. This method allows a school to make a direct cost comparison for the scheme and hence achieve value for money. Importantly a good landscape architect will be able to work with your school to develop a unique outdoor learning environment that is right for you, rather than just using a number of standard items of play equipment.
Phase 3 is being built now (May 2014) and the school community are delighted with the results. The Head Teacher commented: Playgrounds look really fantastic, thanks.
Current and future changes
An exciting change in creating outdoor learning opportunities is incorporating natural educational spaces within the school grounds. Often referred to as “integrated natural learning” This allows pupils to explore and enjoy the natural environment through their freely-chosen play. As well as simply enjoying playing outdoors and discovering green spaces this can also include: - spaces that support curriculum delivery - planting and growing vegetables, fruit and flowers; cooking outdoors; and the use of natural materials to create play structures - proving areas for pupils to express practical, physical and emotional experiences that can be easier to understand and more memorable when outdoors
Such an approach might include more emphasis on designing natural education and play space, which incorporates features such as low mounds, dips, ramps, meadow area, hollows, shrubs and trees, willow tunnels, growing gardens and seating.
However, there is a place for fixed play equipment within this and an Integrated Natural Learning Environment is we feel a good and cost effective solution that incorporates both types of play to create an inclusive and engaging outdoor learning experience. The project at Perseid School is a good example of this and makes use of different materials to create a safe learning and social resource.
Costs
Extending an existing school costs an amazing amount of money. Depending on the type of building and construction techniques used a school extension costs on average around £2,400 per sq.m. On this basis a modest four class room extension that we were involved in created an additional 470 m2 of building which was £1.2 million to build but did not include any outdoor reinstatement or improvement. Conversely creating outdoor learning spaces is relatively cheap and represents very good value for money. The re-design and improving an existing school grounds costs on average between £50 per m2 for soft landscape to £150.00 per m2 for hard landscape. This equates to being at least 80% cheaper than the building. It seems clear to us that there are significant benefits to engaging pupils in an Integrated Natural Learning Environment within school grounds. This should be an important part in creating, transforming and revitalising school grounds with respect of the human experience, encouraging greater use of the outdoors by staff and pupils. It can provide a positive distraction from hard, engineered spaces consisting of tarmac and concrete, and incorporate quiet, reflective areas for pupils to flourish and develop their imagination; while learning to engage with nature. Autistic Children CAN Play and benefit therapeutically It’s not a case that children on the autistic spectrum can’t play, but rather that their play gets stuck at the earlier stages. For example, H had few communication skills. After a few weeks of play therapy he was actively pointing things out to his mum and teachers and was verbalising his needs. Another child D, was reluctant to allow the Play Therapist to join his play. After several attempts to introduce a new character into his play, he eventually accepted it. This subsequently opened up the whole playroom to him.

Formed in 1978 by Vivienne Price MBE, the National Children’s Orchestras is Great Britain’s premier symphony orchestra for children, offering talented youngsters between the ages of 7 and 14 a chance to experience first-class training from inspiring tutors and professional musicians, as well as high-profile performance opportunities at concert halls across the UK. In 2014, the National Children’s Orchestras welcomed 516 young people in to its five agebanded national orchestras, which meet on residential courses throughout the year. There are also six regional orchestras that come together on a monthly basis to ensure that the NCO is a truly national organisation that offers opportunities to talented youngsters across the country. The applications for the NCO’s 2015 orchestras open in May 2014, and young people wishing to apply need to do so by September 30th 2014. Representatives of the NCO will tour the UK throughout October meeting with auditionees across the country. In true NCO-spirit, the auditions are aimed to be as relaxing and enjoyable an experience as possible and the children are asked to prepare two contrasting pieces of their own choice, with no nasty scales or aural tests, just two short pieces of sightreading. What the NCO is really looking for is musicianship. Performance opportunities in 2015 will include concerts at Colston Hall in Bristol, Leeds Town Hall and The Anvil in Basingstoke – a fantastic chance for aspiring young musicians to experience top orchestral playing, and to meet like-minded children in a fun and inspiring environment. It is testament to the outstanding level of musical education offered by the NCO that their Founder Vivienne Price was awarded the Music Teacher Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. www.nco.org.uk 01934 418855

VOICE TRIALS for boys aged 7 & 8 8 November 2014 It's been around for 25 years, but SOUNDBEAM still represents the pinnacle of assistive technology resources for music, with an ever-expanding international community of children in over 5000 schools experiencing the unique creative liberation that only Soundbeam can give. "Soundbeam has the capacity to let me make music simply by waving my arms, and so forget - for a few blissful minutes - the disability which has taken up far too much space in my life..." Chris Lees, Soundbeam musician.

Used in a variety of different ways since its invention by composer Edward Williams in the 90’s (and the device has evolved considerably in that time, its development constantly informed by what users, teachers and parents have said they want it to do), the Soundbeam has been highly successful in its use for children and adults across a wide spectrum of disability. Soundbeam is accessible to all and provides a medium through which even profoundly physically or learning impaired individuals can become expressive and communicative using music and sound. An individual can feel a sense of independence, control, and agency and therefore increased confidence which can be a powerful motivator, and perhaps then in turn stimulate learning and interaction in other areas. Soundbeam does not require a computer, and although it contains a host of features the system is designed to be as plug-and-play as possible, with a rich selection of pre-set compositions including reggae, flamenco, blues, hip hop, jazz and classical alongside theme-based material such as the Haunted House, Space and Comedy. For the more experienced player a range of familiar pieces is included, from simple rounds and nursery rhymes to more challenging material like ‘Over the Rainbow’ and JS Bach’s ‘Air on a G string’, and for budding composers wanting to move beyond the presets, the device is infinitely programmable. Soundbeam’s extensive positive effects have helped make it become a widely recognised learning tool and key resource by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in assisting children with learning disabilities to attain learning targets as prescribed by the National Curriculum for Music. Encouraging independent play, and learning together, an individual who ordinarily may not have been able to play music can - perhaps for the first time - become independently creative and expressive with Soundbeam. Autism’s Got Talent does it again! With the success of 2013, and after popular demand, Autism’s Got Talent returned to The Mermaid Theatre on 10th May 2014. Created by Anna Kennedy OBE, and her UK autism charity Anna Kennedy Online, and supported by Pineapple Performing Arts School, Autism’s Got Talent showcases the diverse and superb talents of people on the autistic spectrum.
Cutting edge Flash Mob dances for autism awareness month in Croydon town centre Anna Kennedy OBE and her charity Anna Kennedy Online had yet more fun whilst raising awareness of Autism at the Whitgift Shopping Centre, Croydon on the 29th March 2014, in collaboration with Nuffield Health Club in Croydon.
“Autism’s Got Talent is a platform for talented individuals with autism to wow the audience and show off their skills and talents. We had soloists, but people also performed in groups, which is something many people are quick to judge as impossible for those on the spectrum. Not only are these talented, amazing individuals proving their critics wrong, they are also having fun and achieving so much!” Anna told us.
Kick starting Autism Awareness month with a difference, both Charities worked together to perform an exclusive and surprise Flash Mob in Whitgift Square! A high calibre group of trusted individuals from both Charities danced spontaneously to a well-rehearsed performance choreographed and taught by Hannah Maxwell (Nuffield Health Studio Manager and also from Bird Gang Dance Group - the UK representatives in the World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas in 2012) whilst passers by were mesmerised and taken by a complete surprise – entertainment at its best! Anna Kennedy Online and Nuffield Health members alongside the Bird Gang Dance Group had been secretly rehearsing at the Nuffield Health Club in Croydon for several months to perform the FlashMob routine, which also involved people with autism, the aim was to raise awareness and place a positive perspective on autism.
2014 boasted a variety of talent from people of all ages, including actors, singers, musicians and dancers. As an example of its roaring success and positive influence of last year this year many acts who sat in the audience last year, were given the confidence to perform themselves! Anna treated the audience to a tap dancing routine with her fellow Tap for Fun tappers and Michael John French. Celebrity hosts David Grant, Dr Pam Spur and Britain got Talent Finalist Steve Hewlett were also part of the big line up.
Anna Kennedy OBE, Founder of Anna Kennedy Online said, “When we hear about autism
related subjects on the news, it is always doom and gloom. The flash mob was a unique way to celebrate autism and showcase the capabilities and confidence that these remarkable individuals possess. April is Autism Awareness Month, so the Flash Mob was a fantastic platform to launch the range of activities that will be taking place throughout the month, not just from Anna Kennedy Online, but all organisations throughout the world.” The Flash Mob was a perfect introduction to the levels of talent, energy and positivity. With two sessions of the Flash Mob dance, and each session drawing hundreds of people to watch the cutting edge and perfectly choreographed routine, which included Anna Kennedy OBE who is always game to join in, it was an astounding success! The professional video is now on social media platforms and was filmed and produced by Avalanche-studio, a production company based in Croydon who also photographed the event. The video will send the key messages across the globe to raise Autism Awareness in a positive light throughout April and beyond. The whole project was fully supported by The Whitgift Centre Management team supported this whole event in a bid to raise awareness and funds. www.annakennedyonline.com
“It was that time again, time to settle into our seats at The Mermaid House, London to be inspired and dazzled by the talent on show at this year’s Autism’s Got Talent and yet again we were blown away by the acts before us. Anna and her cast of excellent stars entertained us with dancing, singing, playing instruments and so much more. Each and every act brought something different to it all and we were all taken aback by the talent on show yet again. It’s wonderful that so many people came together to celebrate the talents of everyone involved! Yet again it was truly inspirational and I already can’t wait until next year! The showbiz style red carpet event is a true celebration of everyone on the autism spectrum. Well done Anna and her superstar team, yet again a show of togetherness and dedication that is so inspirational for everyone to watch! Bring on Autism’s Got Talent 2015!” Jenny Cross, Cross Productions Director.

each student’s level of ability. They are also able to undertake qualifications such as GCSE’s and ASDAN. Life after the college is considered at all times with lessons in life skills such as maintaining a bedroom, changing bedclothes, hoovering, washing, cleaning the kitchen and gardening all given a lot of attention in daily life at the college. There are also sessions outside of the college with trips to a variety of locations in the community such as regular trips to the supermarket, the library, shops, and cafes and nearby park all of which give the students the opportunity to experience and be a part of different aspects of community life. Students are encouraged to make the connection between the skills that these actions require and the need to incorporate them in to other aspects of their life. For example the food they buy at the supermarket is then used to cook lunch, whilst their library books often form the basis of their Literacy sessions. One parent has said that since attending this session, and seeing the change it has made for her child, she has felt confident enough to include them in her weekly shopping trips. The underlying goal of any visit is always to develop our student’s independence as far as possible. The college’s commitment to providing a real environment for each and every student enables them to live their lives to their fullest and provides opportunities to give them skills which they can take with them during life after education. College staff work closely with other professional colleagues to form a multi-disciplinary team, providing a holistic approach to each student’s welfare and well-being. The college’s commitment to empowering students to access the opportunities they have is second to none yet the targets they set are realistic to ensure the student has the best opportunity to work towards an independent life.

Feel the Support The Anna Kennedy support network has been and continues to be one of the most precious resources to those whose lives are affected by Autism. Anna’s dedication to providing a community for those who feel in the dark is second to none. The website annakennedyonline.com, her Facebook page and twitter feed provide so much in terms of both factual advice and emotional support for those that need it. Very regular updates and news from autism research as well as the latest from the continuous campaigns and fundraisers for autism awareness have all created an environment for people to learn, share and feel supported. At www.annakennedyonline.com you will find a wealth of information, including information on the early stages of diagnosis and what you can do next, whatever stage you are at. Her support network doesn’t go unnoticed, with many, many people reliant on the community feel that has been created for people all over the world; the Facebook page for example has helped many who simply don’t know where to turn after a diagnosis. So, if you are looking for advice, for information or simply to expand your knowledge of autism simply join up to the support network in any of the following ways; Visit www.annakennedyonline.com www.facebook.com/Annakennedyonline Anna Kennedy online provides support and awareness for individuals and families when they feel like it simply isn’t there, when they feel alone in their diagnosis, in finding a school or simply in finding ways to improve everyday life. We spoke to one lady for whom the support of Anna Kennedy and her team has been overwhelming. “I have two sons with the older of the two, Arun, having Autism. He was being bullied at his mainstream school at the time in which I saw Anna on a TV spot talking about the Give us a Break Anti-bullying during school breaks campaign. I knew she could help improve awareness at my son’s school so contacted her to see if she could. I actually didn’t expect a response as quickly as I know how busy she must have been, but she replied and suggested she come to the school to give a talk. After consulting the head teacher who was very supportive of the idea and is still hugely supportive, Anna gave the talk in front of the whole school. The response was almost immediate, both pupils and staff learnt a great deal and just by raising the awareness in his school the lunchtime bullying my son had suffered with for so long…. stopped. I was so used to being told to keep my son’s condition quiet from people yet once the talk had taken place it was very liberating to share with pupils, staff and other parents just what Arun was going through. I was blown away by her work and so was everyone at the school. From here my work with Anna grew and grew and my admiration of her work and commitment to the cause was infectious, I soon became a governor at the school, started a support group for the community with two parents and after building a great working relationship with Anna she offered me a position as a Charity Champion! I now help with fundraising and awareness events as part of the Anna Kennedy Online Team and couldn’t be happier. It’s wonderful to be part of something that does so much for people, it knocks communities sideways! Anna doesn’t only help individuals, its ripple effect. It’s not only my son who has been empowered by having her as an influence in his life but mine too, I had no direct ion after I gave up my career due to my son needing me and now I have purpose and a goal. From the moment I saw Anna on that TV programme I knew she was inspirational …but I didn’t realise quite how much she would change our lives for the better!” Mala Thapar

Education is the word… All the educational facilities at Anna Kennedy Online were created to provide the strong, educational environment that the mainstream simply doesn’t offer to those with Autism. Anna has poured blood sweat and tears into creating environments in which it’s attending children thrive, learn and grow, providing a place in which they receive the education they deserve. It all started in 1999, after Anna was turned away from 26 special needs schools for her two sons. Not one to settle for second best, Anna was hell bent on creating a school environment that was good enough for her sons. So, she re-mortgaged her house and created her own! Yes, you read that right, she built her own school! She transformed a derelict council building in Middlesex, West London into Hillingdon Manor School. Soon supply couldn’t reach the demand and so she later opened Baston House and then further down the line West London Community College, thus creating the perfect, supportive educational environment for her children and plenty of others too from the age of three and a half to 19 and beyond. The success of each school is of course down to Anna’s initial drive and passion to create an environment in which individuals, no matter their age or background, could enjoy education delivered in a way that not only provided a happy environment but a productive one too. These schools deliver for so many individuals and in turn their families, changing their lives for the better.

Baston House School
The Hillingdon School opened in 1999 with 19 pupils and is now the largest of its kind in Europe, offering 150 autistic children a safe, structured education and a brighter future. Hillingdon Manor’s head teacher Akinyi Dulo comments: “I am in the very fortunate position of being able to say that I love my job. There are many moments that make this job special; when a student initiates a conversation with you for the first time or tells you what fun they had experiencing something new. When you are shown a piece of work that speaks volumes about the progress made by an individual, watching the wonder on their faces as they discover something new in the sensory garden or the science laboratory; seeing them holding their nerve during formal examinations; taking the bus to town and just learning to cope with the numerous anxieties that autism presents. My underlying feeling is always one of pride, and I feel privileged to be working at Hillingdon Manor School.”
West London Community College (WLCC) is an established specialist provision for adults with autism spectrum conditions including Asperger syndrome. The College, which is part of the Hillcrest family, is situated over two campuses. Head Service Manager at WLCC Sandra Johnstone comments; “I think one of the biggest achievements when I look back at my time at the college is that we started with a service that had six students from within a shed to a service that has forty students across two campuses. At the college we adopt a person centred approach and this has really helped us to improve and to keep improving, by ensuring we focus on the individual our college has really thrived. The Service continues to grow and we hope to see the opening of a third campus in the near future. It’s truly a rewarding role and one which I am so glad I found after going back into higher education!”
Baston House School provides a centre of excellence in education and development for children aged between 5 and 16 years of age who have been diagnosed with an autistic spectrum condition (ASC) Baston House has a strong mission statement: Baston House School strives to provide effective specialist education and support to pupils on the Autistic Spectrum and to their families, enabling pupils to achieve their full potential in education and in life outside school. Our approach is based on an eclectic fusion of child-centred and autism-specific strategies and techniques, with a clear focus on improving communication and interaction skills through positive interventions. www.hillingdonmanorschool.org.uk www.autismconsultants.org www.hillcrestcare.co.uk

Literature Of course we all know the power reading can have on a child growing up; not only does it teach them morals, help them learn and aid them in discovering the world it also provides a wonderful tool in sparking their imaginations. For a child with Autism these benefits and more are very important and highlight even more of an emotional connection to things that they might sometimes find difficult to convey. This issue we have three very different writers talking about different aspects of Autism. Suzy Books offers her range of learning in difficult situations books which all help children with Autism with their emotional feelings towards what might be seen as difficult situations, whereas Anna Kennedy’s book I’m not stupid offers the support to the parent of a child with autism highlighting her journey with Autism and her boys. Marisa’s story is great for a wide range of audience with its notion of seeing things from the other side, the side of the child with Autism, the view is one that the whole world would benefit from knowing.
Suzie Books
Let Suzie take the worry away… If there was a way to help you as a parent, carer or teacher convey subjects that can be tricky for you to broach with children, you would be interested…right? Suzie Books provides this opportunity with a series of wonderfully produced books for children. Writer Charlotte first created the stories after returning to writing; “I had been a teaching assistant for some time but found my way back to writing after realising a character and format I had created in my college days had great potential with audiences. The positive outcomes are a great way for me to be able to express some of the hurdles I have faced with my children in order to help other children too.” Charlotte told us. Suzie’s character allows the reader to experience her feelings and positive outcomes in situations which many children may find difficult or new to them, such as going on an airplane, going to a funeral or simply going to the hairdressers. Each story is enjoyable and offers up a slice of reassurance and wisdom to enable the reader, or listener to appreciate that
50
whatever the story or situation it will all be ok. Suzie is really positive and offers praise and a great attitude throughout, it’s no wonder she is enjoying such positive feedback herself; "Having already bought and thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Going on an Aeroplane' with my three year old son, I was delighted to see 'Toilet Time ' had been published as a hard copy. I immediately bought it as a gift for a friend. Her daughter has found toilet training tricky and the book will not only open up discussions, it will also give her daughter a friendly character to identify with. The books are a great resource for anyone who wants to help children feel more confident about everyday experiences that they come across. I will be buying more titles." A happy Suzie Books Customer. Ideal for at home to read with your children or equally great for schools and even funeral parlours, there is something for all children to relate to and therefore something for all of them to learn. So, whether you are a mainstream school, an SEN school or simply a parent

Autism: A view from the other side
Not Stupid: The Story of One Mother’s Fight to Rescue the Lives of Her Children from Autism by Anna Kennedy
Sharing the Knowledge
The power of seeing things from someone else’s perspective is huge, it not only helps you to understand but goes some way in helping you to get a better relationship with a person. It was this way for Marisa Piedade who believed in seeing things through someone else’s eyes was such a powerful tool,
Anna Kennedy OBE has not only campaigned relentlessly for Autism Awareness but has also documented her experiences with her own family and Autism. Her insights into her own life, her own struggles with the diagnosis of her sons Autism, and her strife in finding a suitable school for them. The emotional response to her book has been overwhelming, Not Stupid has been loved by so many since its release. Long-time supporter and friend to Anna, Esther Ranzen said this of Not Stupid; “Where does Anna get her vision, and the strength to make it a reality? The answers are here in this book. I only met Anna when she was well on the way to creating her school,
and I was making a television programme about her. Reading about her teenage years, I am eternally grateful to her Italian father, who tried and failed to control her, to stop her going to
college, and marry the man she loved. Winning those early battles and proving she was right
must have given Anna the confidence to believe that she could win other tougher battles. She
and Sean persuaded Hillingdon Council to let her have disused school premises, and Barclays Bank to lend her the money she needed, and an army of volunteers to turn it into an attractive
practical school. That was just the beginning, but all the while she was dealing with the dramas and dilemmas in her own family life, for autistic children have a different kind of logic, one that often sets them at odds with the rest of the world. So there are plenty of moments in this book when you can laugh with Anna, while you are consumed with admiration for her stamina and
resourcefulness. How would you like to be stuck on a motorway in the freezing fog in a brokendown car, with a mobile phone which has no signal, and two autistic children? She coped without panicking, just as she coped with all the other ordeals in her life.
This is not a textbook on how to bring up disabled children, or the best way to teach them, or a tool-kit you can use to set up your own school, although I’m sure many parents and
communities will use it that way, because there is plenty of useful information for others who
want to follow where she has led. This is not a personal story of victory either, Anna is far too
modest to see it in those terms. But it is a remarkable testament to the fact that one woman can make a difference, if that woman is Anna Kennedy.”
she wrote an entire book from it! Marisa, a fully qualified SEN teacher always knew it was her calling to work with children with special needs but it was one student in particular who really cemented this belief; “I was working with a boy who has Autism for
quite some time. I could see how isolated he
had become, he could barely speak, read or write and it was a challenge to work with him
to say the least. I stuck by him convinced that I could help him in some way. By observing him
in the playground and classroom and watching for clues as to what he was thinking or feeling
he eventually started to trust me and gradually started to respond to my teaching. It was all
very gentle and really worked on watching for behavioural clues and following my instincts.
On my last day at the school he silently took my hand and walked me to the door. It was very
emotional for me and really showed how I had
positively affected him when so many couldn’t.” Marisa told us.
Trying to see things through the boy’s eyes led Marisa to compile stories as if from his perspective and her book Autism: A View from the Other Side was born. The book is slowly but surely making an impact, with many readers relating to how refreshing it is to see and therefore understand from another’s

makes access to swimming with the dolphins a reality. The ProMove Sling is used at numerous airports to transfer to aisle chair then aircraft seat and is bought by many individuals for transfers at airports that do not provide ProMove Slings. The sling is available in all sizes with and without a head support; in schools & colleges, it is providing access for disabled children and adults to activities that are enjoyed by their able-bodied peers and as a means of evacuation, allocating each wheelchair user with the appropriate size sling on arrival each morning and placed, in its own bag, on the back of the chair. Other uses for the sling are found in social care, and the emergency services.
Our website: www.promove.uk.com has many videos that show the ProMove sling in action & our lively blog and news sections cover a range of disability issues. Dr Huw Thomas Contact: 01970 820893

Makaton: Taking the frustration out of communication Communication is a huge part of who we are as humans and is directly responsible for how we interact with other and express ourselves. Communication doesn’t come easily for everyone though and without effective methods of communication the world can seem like a pretty daunting place. Everyday tasks like learning in school, asking for specific food and drink, solving problems and of course making friends and having fun can be a minefield of mayhem and upset for someone who finds the conventional methods of learning to communicate hard for various different reasons. There is a solution for those that struggle though, Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. Makaton is a ground-breaking programme which uses signs, symbols and speech to help people communicate. Signs are used, with speech, in spoken word order which helps provide extra clues about what someone is saying. Using signs can help people who have no speech or whose speech is unclear and using symbols can help people who have limited speech and those who cannot, or prefer not to sign.
using specially developed signs and symbols, it allows the learner to do so at their own pace with many people then dropping the signs or symbols naturally at their own pace, as they develop speech. The system is also very flexible and can be personalised and adapted to suit any individual’s needs. Makaton can be used to: •
share thoughts, choices and emotions
•
label real objects, pictures, photos and places
•
take part in games and songs
•
listen to, read and tell stories
• create recipes, menus and shopping lists
•
write letters and messages
•
help people find their way around public buildings
Perhaps one of the biggest results from those using the Makaton system is that it takes away a lot of the frustrations for the individual when it comes to finding a way with communication enabling individuals to connect with other people and the world around them. This of course, opens up all kinds of possibilities and enables the individual to learn, grow and enjoy life. Today over 100,000 children and adults, use Makaton symbols and signs. To find out more visit www.makaton.org today.
Makaton makes it possible for children and adults to learn to communicate straight away

Quartz Healthcare: Empowering you with your options The subject of personal budgets is one which effects are great deal of individuals, their families and their carer’s lives. With Personal Budgets having been introduced for those requiring mental healthcare, psychiatric care and behavioural care provisions, for the first time individuals, their families and carers have been given the opportunity to choose their own health care
providers and therefore take steps to gain greater independence and
a better quality of life. With the control of how and where you and those
around you spend their budget to enable services and care that is in their very best interests comes a great deal of responsibility; and with it a certain amount of burden. Whilst it’s liberating to have this control over decisions for care it can be a confusing time for some, all that choice suddenly with no idea of where to turn. You needn’t carry these concerns alone though, with the help of Quartz
Healthcare and their consultation service you will
feel liberation from these burdens and discover a wealth of ways to make
informed choices. Helping you in all aspects of your budget so that
everything is well thought out through discussion and informed choices mean that you and your responsibility for your health budget needn’t be a worry; it can be what it’s meant to be; a chance to choose.

and take everything into account.
Quartz Healthcare are a growing, highly reputable organisation who offer a wealth of information, support, advice and services that can have a life-changing effect on individuals and their families - simply because they take an individual’s needs as first priority. Having worked with a range of professional services and organisations over the years Director Ian Woodley and his close knit team are experts at finding the best possible solutions for you and your particular circumstances; “No person’s needs will be exactly the same as another’s, that’s why with each and every client we look at the case holistically, how their care has been in the past and where they would like it to be in the future. Our initial chats are obligation free and cost free so that individuals can feel at ease in the knowledge that we are truly offering services that enhance their lives and take everything into account. We consult with the individual, family members and their care teams in order to get to the root of what is best for that person. It’s a complete story, from where they have been to where they want their future to be so that they
can live their lives as fully as possible, to the highest quality possible.” Ian told us. Providing this service has proven vital to those that have used it and will be for those who do in the future, with such a minefield of information from a variety of sources given at various steps along the way, whether just after a diagnosis or a change in care; it’s a confusing time and this level of support at Quartz is priceless. The process is explained every step of the way, with communication being top of the agenda; “If after the initial consultation a client feels that what we can offer them will be of great use to them, we then explore a wide variety of options to present to them, enabling choice at every possible stage. After the chatting and planning stage we pull on a variety of resources, contacts and services to put our carefully laid out plans in place, it’s this part that is so rewarding really; being able to offer exactly what an individual needs for a brighter future. This can be life changing for individuals and can often be as a result of simply listening to what the client and
families want and need. For example, a client and family came to us where the client was on the Autism Spectrum and the individual was struggling with living with the large number of individuals with their current living arrangement. He was not thriving at all and often commented that he simply wanted to be in an environment with less people, that that would make him happiest. We looked at a variety of options and eventually the family settled on him living independently in a warden controlled flat with carers visiting when needed. The result on his life and therefore his family’s lives too was astounding! He had been moved from home to home previously and the situation was only getting worse, yet all along he had said that he just wanted to live with less people around him. He knew he would be happier that way, what we did was simply listen to his needs and meet those needs in the best possible way that we could. It’s really about listening, taking the time to find out what’s better all round for an individual and their family.” Ian explained.
Achieve 57
However, Quartz’s involvement doesn’t stop there; they can set the wheels in motion with a wide variety of options. If you aren’t looking for complete budget planning assistance the team can provide different options for you too. For example, if you are looking for assistance with the administration side of things, recruiting the services of carers, or helping to make a transition from an existing care organisation to a finding a new one; “We are more than happy to assist you in a variety of different ways, with as little or as much input as you need. I think the biggest message that we would like to get across to all our potential clients is just to pick up the phone and ask us! We pride ourselves on offering a service for all, whatever your needs and are often complemented on our approachability. The decisions around the right care for you or your family members are big; they need to be thought through and with all the right information being given to you we feel that we can help you by making sure you feel comfortable with your well informed decisions. So, approach us and discover how we can help you and your family can live the best life you can live, as independently as possible.” Ian enthused. Drawing on a wealth of professional healthcare organisations and institutions such as private medical centres, specialist care homes, healthcare communities and professional individuals that Quartz has worked with for a number of years it really is all tailored to an individual and their needs and ideas, whatever Quartz can do to help they will, can and do! I am sure people are becoming more concerned about the scale and number of abuse cases appearing in the news recently. Is this a trend to be concerned about? I have worked for many years in the healthcare industry, and unfortunately abuse of our more vulnerable members of society has always been there. What has happened in recent years is that we have become more aware, and there are more procedures, along with advanced technology to catch these people quicker. As an employer of over 80 care staff, avoiding abuse is always something at the front of our minds. Luckily in the 20 years I have been involved in healthcare, I have only had to investigate three cases of abuse resulting in a successful prosecution. Although this is three too many, as a percentage to the totally people that have been cared for in this period, it is a fraction of 1%. So I think we need to keep this in

Churchwood Valley Holiday Cabins by the Sea in Devon
Time for a relaxing break in Devon? Fancy getting away from it all? Want a chance to unwind, explore a new area and discover the local wildlife? If you answered yes to all or any of these then Churchwood Valley is for you! Churchwood is situated in a beautiful natural wooded valley running down to the sea at Wembury Bay in South Devon. Nestled amongst the green foliage is your home for your stay, in the form of comfortable wooden cabins. You will enjoy your own plot on the hillside, surrounded by trees and flowering shrubs. Your cabin is very well equipped with everything you need and the beds are made up as part of the price. Life at Churchwood is wonderfully relaxed with the focus on tranquillity rather than bustle. You won’t find discos, bars or cafes, just rock pools, wildlife and stunning scenery. You can watch local wildlife from the comfort of your chair within your cabin or on the patio; look out for badgers, foxes, squirrels and an abundance of birdlife. Churchwood offers seclusion not isolation; there are all the amenities you could need for a relaxing stay. The licensed shop sells a wide range of food, drink, gifts and beach toys and there is also a fully equipped launderette.
Perfect for a relaxing, romantic break or a family holiday, Churchwood is a short stroll away from a lovely, safe, family beach and the South West Coast Path. With Wembury village close by you can pursue your favourite activity too! You can have a go on the free tennis court, swim or surf in the sea or learn to ride a horse. There is a golf course nearby and the Mountbatten Centre offers courses on sailing and other maritime activities. Pubs and restaurants that offer delicious meals often using local produce are within walking distance or just a short drive away. For the past 18 years Churchwood has won a gold conservation award from Professor David Bellamy. The commitment the dedicated team has for preserving the natural environment of the area is outstanding. Cabins, the shop and information room have all been clad in sweet chestnut grown and planked on site, fences are made of Monterey Pine and internal cladding is elm. The recycling centre handles many reusable resources, and trimmings from the site are composted and put to good use in the hanging baskets on the cabins. It’s not only the outside that has green credentials though; the cabins themselves have low energy light bulbs and appliances, and cleaning staff use phosphate-free cleaning products. The team always opts for the greener option, a level of commitment that is just one element of what makes for a natural and beautiful environment at Churchwood Valley. Some of the cabins are wheelchair accessible but there are steep hills and paths too. Please enquire at the time of booking for availability of easy access cabins. Unique, Robust and Income Making Accommodation! Love camping in the great outdoors or want to provide accommodation for paying guests but not so keen on the unpredictable capabilities of canvas? Enter the Storm-Pod! Gus Newman, manufacturer of Scotland’s largest GRP boat building company has developed a ground-breaking fibreglass shelled accommodation. An expert in working with fibreglass for many years he realised its potential for accommodation purposes just recently; “I often thought that the strength and lifespan of fibreglass would be an ideal material to use in the construction of accommodation units. By combining fibreglass with other strengthening materials, I found that we could create a structure that could combat the extreme west coast weather and possess a long lifespan, even if placed underground.” Gus explained. The Storm-Pod team are currently at the forefront of the concept of the pods, having developed a range of simple and affordable units that combine ground-breaking fibreglass building techniques with luxury in mind. There are no boundaries, just possibilities, the fact that their techniques allows them to build a structure that can withstand the elements and have a lifespan of over twenty years means that they

create a product unlike anything that has been seen before. The pod provides an excellent opportunity for land owners or anyone else who wants to earn a steady second income that will provide year on year returns. Accommodation prices are forever increasing and people are willing to spend extortionate amounts as they have no alternative, the pods provide luxury accommodation at affordable prices which means a steady stream of custom for its operator. Within a two year period the pod will have been paid off in most circumstances – that’s how popular these units are. Due to the long lifespan of the pods they are guaranteed to bring in years of business for the operator who places them on their site. Combine this with minimal upkeep and it’s a recipe for financial success. The Storm –Pods abilities to last aren’t their only benefits, they provide extra strong units, no leaks or drafts, no rust or rot, they can even be sold on, moved or recycled should you wish to, they look great and blend well with their surrounding landscape and can be covered in soil or grass to blend in further! What’s more they are pretty green too as they are highly energy efficient, are fully insulated and have minimum energy usage; no heat escapes and no cold enters! The pot is also deceitfully large
inside; its compact exterior opens up into plenty of space for the whole family - it even offers separate living and sleeping areas!

The What’s On Guide With the summer holidays approaching the pressure is on to find ways to keep the children entertained! Whilst we love the time spend with the kiddos it can be hard to think of fresh ways to keep them entertained. Luckily for us there are loads of fun family days out here in the midlands. Ever taken them to The Sealife Centre in Birmingham? It’s great, there are loads to learn and do and of course it’s packed with under-the-sea creatures that both you and the kids will love to discover. It’s one of the best Sealife centres the UK has to offer and we are lucky enough to have it just up the road! Or, if you and the kids fancy some more action, Laser Force is a great adrenaline pumping day out for you all, there is one in Leicester, Peterborough and Northampton too so there is bound to be one near you! Of course, we are imagining bright sunny days playing outside too; it’s just nice to offer the odd activity day to mix it all up a bit isn’t it?
