He then went on to win the world championship when he was thirteen. In 1980 Mullen started his professional career as a Pro Skateboarder getting sponsored by several big skate companies through out the 80s and featuring in several skate videos. The Annual X Games 08 Ft. NASA During the 14th annual ESPN X games in Los Angeles, 2008, NASA hosted an event called “The Launch Pad.” It was set up to communicate NASA’s future plans of space exploration to this unique audience of extreme sport athletes and their fans. With in the four day they hosted 10,500 visitors, which Rocky Lind, NASA’s Information and Communications Coordinator deemed a great success and says...

The Launch Pad exhibited several interactive features such as, a replica of the Robonaut robot due to reside in the International Space Station in February 2011, Touchable Space Food, A virtual reality build of NASA’s new rockets, self portraits on simulated moonscape, a look at the Mars landscape in 3D and the chance to win a BMX bike provided by the Space Coalition. Along side that, NASA EDGE, a TV program produced by NASA, took a look into the similar characteristics between Astronauts and professional extreme sport athletes.

“While they might be considered a non-traditional audience, these kids are no strangers to the rules of gravity, aerodynamics and mission safety! It’s natural that they would be interested in space travel, and our goal is to excite them about possibly becoming NASA’s next scientists and engineers.”
