KEEFER KICKS FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME with her excellent vision and on target passes. Keefer believes she struggles with her short temper in game situations. “When it comes to my vision, reading the field is easy for me and is very helpful in certain game situations,” Keefer said. “My temper is the worst part of me in soccer; when I get upset I just give up on myself so easily, so hopefully I can change that this season.” Varisty soccer player and senior Danielle Brose also thinks Morgan contributes multiple aspects to the team that can be used to their advantage. “She is very skilled when it comes to offensive movement and is also very aggressive,” Brose said. “Her aggression helps her stay dominant on the ball and then her skills just make it better for not only her, but also our team as well when it comes to scoring opportunities.” While being involved in the sport, soccer has impacted Keefer’s life off the field. One of the people to impact Keefer’s life the most is varsity coach Marni Polakow.

spring without. Keefer started her time in soccer at the Lindenhurst Area Soccer Club. She said she started because her friends were already in soccer and kept telling her to try it out. “Once I came to join the club I became obsessed with soccer and also liked playing with my friends,” Keefer said. One of her favorite aspects of the sport is the competitive edge of the game, along with the bond a team can create throughout a season of playing with each other. “I like how the game can sometimes come down to the last minute,” Keefer said. “I enjoy sharing those moments with the girls on my team and that is what makes the game so enjoyable for me.” When in season for the Sequoits, Keefer plays as an outside midfielder where she creates offensive opportunities and also plays in the defensive aspect. She contributes to the team

“She has completely changed my outlook on soccer and in life as well,” Keefer said. “She has made me into the person and player I am today because of the lessons she has taught me as a coach and mentor.” Keefer, along with the other members of the varsity soccer team, have certains goals and aspirations for the season. One of those is being able to come home with a regional title. After just missing out on that opportunity to the Wauconda Bulldogs last year, Keefer has come back with the determination to achieve that goal. “Us seniors have been waiting to come home with a regional ever since our freshman year,” Keefer said. “We have the talent and team that is able to achieve that goal and it would be a nice way to end my career as a Sequoit.”

But, I think vocally he is not afraid to talk to the kids and encourage them.” Not only will weight lifting improve and help preserve muscles in the body, but it will also improve explosiveness and strength, which is both a key factor
“The reason why [I did track] was because Coach Glashagel wanted me to meet the football coaches before the football season started,” Becker said. While starting off on the right foot with the coaching staff is helpful, working hard on and off the field can enhance performance at competitions. “I was always the bigger guy, just not the fastest.” Becker Said. Becker’s physique has helped him in discus and shotput as a freshman. As Becker progressed through his years in high school, he continued to improve as a result of the early morning lifts and practices after hours. “Chase is a hard working kid,” Coach Bailey said. “He is strong and one of our leaders.”

As a junior, Becker holds the Antioch indoor conference record for shot put at a distance of 51 feet, 7 inches. However, Becker does not plan on slowing down with his accomplishments in the 2018 season. “My goal for this season is a 180 [feet] in discus and 52 [feet] in shot put,” Becker said. With these results and a lot of hard work, these scores would qualify Becker for state. This season, Becker hopes to set and break more records and help lead his team to the podium at state.

For Abdellatif, a school record and qualifying for state are not the only things that she hopes to be remembered for when she walks out the doors of Antioch. “I want to be remembered for my improvements,” Abdellatif said. “All people naturally improve, but usually only by a few inches each year; I managed to improve my personal record by four feet last season. I want people to remember me for how hard I worked to get to where I am today.” Abdellatif’s hard work has most definitely paid off, earned herself the title as captain this season. With this title, Abdellatif hopes to be a good example not only for the underclassmen, but also for her entire team. “[Noor] is the type of person that hypes everyone up and pushes them to do their best on a daily basis,” sophomore Ayanna Tommy said. “She is also a great student, being an even better example.” This season, Abdellatif looks forward to being able to witness what the underclassman are going to be able to bring to the team. “We have such a young team full of athletes who have so much passion for this sport,” Abdellatif said. “With all of the talent that we have, I truly think that we will perform very well.”

THIS GIRL 1 RUNS THE [TRACK] WORLD
W
hen one starts a sport, they may not know how it will change them and their life. This is exactly what has happened to freshman Reese Mercer. Mercer started track in the sixth grade and has run herself right into her freshman season. “I had liked running so I thought why not try track,” Mercer said. “It turned out that I really liked it and have been doing it for four years now.” Coming in as a freshman can be nerve wracking for anyone, especially coming into a sport where you have to prove yourself to seasoned veterans. Mercer is pleased with her teammates so far as they have been cheering her on throughout the season already. “At my first meet, I was running my event and as I was running by I could hear my teammates cheering me on as I passed by,” Mercer said. “That is what really made me feel like I was apart of the team.” Mercer loves spending time with her teammates and getting to see those who she doesn’t practice with every day. She also enjoys doing specific things in practice that help her to improve with her speed. “My favorite practices are when we all
run together at the first part of practice,” Mercer said. “I also like going down on the track and doing different distances of sprints and then also working on blocks so it will improve my time.” Mercer has made good relationships with the coaches that have been with her throughout the season so far. The coaches have truly helped her to improve and to teach her a lot of new things that will benefit her in the long run. Mercer has not only been the one to learn, she has also been the one to lead and encourage others. “Reese is very skilled in the events that she runs and is a great member of the team,” freshman girls track member Kylee Craig said. “ She has helped me by encouraging me in my events and by giving me advice.” With the season underway and improvements being made, Mercer hopes to make herself a better athlete overall. “I hope to be able to run varsity for some meets and to improve my times in all my events,” Mercer said. “Maybe even making it to sectionals for at least one event.”
