How likely Prostitutes enter the proffession due to addictions

The aim of the research is to explore the attitudes, opinions and awareness that the public have towards Prostitution. This is because it is an ongoing concern not only in Britain but around the world. This is something that society feels strongly about and have mixed opinions towards this issue.

The literature shows that other countries had attempted to legalise and provide help and assistance to prostitutes.

20

37% of our respondents first heard of the term prostitution through the media. This has supported some of our background research which gave us a number of photos, webpage articles, newspaper articles and videos.

Next was 32% who thought that the government should legalise prostitution. By doing this it will enable to industry to be monitored, kept safe and more importantly TAXED.

31% said that “it was most likely that women enter the profession due to addictions”. For example to pay for drugs, only 7.6% said that it was unlikely for the reason to the case; this therefore shows that it was the majority of the respondents believe addictions are the main reason to enter the profession.

46% respondents said that they either strongly agreed or agreed. Respondents said the reasons why they agreed with this statement was because they believe that men that sleep with prostitutes are often married, women are often forced against their will and gives a bad image for women and make men think they are worthless. “Sex is meant to be private and between a couple not just something that is done to get money no one should have to sell themselves for money!”

This shows respondents opinions as to whether prostitution is a female only problem, because In advertising and websites to do with prostitution its always the women that are the face of the issue. However 88% of our respondents either disagreed or strongly disagreed to the above statement. This shows that the majority of our respondents do not feel that it is a female only problem. All respondents said that that there were also male prostitutes but there are just not as many. However it was interesting that no one mentioned that actually if a man is paying for a prostitute then he is immediately implicated and effects him as well.

This shows that the respondents are aware of prostitution but underestimate the scale of it in Britain.

Only 9.7% of people answered that the average annual income of a prostitute is £100,000 of which 87.5% were 18- 21. From our research we found lots of different results, but came to the conclusion that this was the right figure as there are high end prostitutes that earn up to £3,000 a day compared to street prostitutes who only earn £15 for half an hour. 42.7% answered that prostitutes only earn £20,000- £40,000 suggesting that our respondents are mainly aware of street prostitutes and not fully aware of the industry as a whole.

Most of our respondents were students, so the research shows that they under estimate the average annual income of a Prostitute which is £100,000 a year, tax free and they also didn't know how many Prostitutes are living and working in the UK, the respondents thought that there was 21—40 thousand and there is actually 61,000.

“Making the country aware of the risks that come with sex related crimes”

“Make it an offence to have sex with someone for another persons gain”

“Introduce closure powers for premises linked to sexual exploitation”

Having said that we have found the public want the government to deal with the issue but they do not want to pay for it through taxes. As they believe that there are more pressing issues for the government to deal with and it will not benefit the country and the profession will always exist legalised or not.

After discussing this as a group we concluded that next time we would choose a topic that isn't as controversial as “Prostitution” and with more literature readily available. This will also increase the demographic that will respond to our questionnaire.

Next time we would also manage our time, resources and effort better to enable us to produce a better piece of research with informed and supported information

From the research our respondents feel that the government should “Deal” with Prostitution by “Educating the younger generations with the risks of Prostitution”.

As a group we decided that we would work more on our survey to get it out quicker with better informed questions which in turn will give us more time to analyse and process our data.

The older respondents aged 31+ were less comfortable with the research topic this could be because they have had less exposure through the media and education. We also believe that “Prostitution” has had a lot more air-time through television programmes and music and has raised awareness. It could be said that it has now been accepted by British culture; and has expanded over the past 10 years.

But 6 people over estimated and 66 people under estimated the number of prostitutes in the UK. This could be that they completely underestimate the industry and the number of people working within the industry .

The government has currently got schemes in place, such as ugly mugs and dodgy punters. These aim to protect and improve the safety of sex workers and reduce the crimes that are committed against them. They do this by allowing sex workers to report incidents to the central national point if they don't feel comfortable going straight to the police. Undercover police men will then be sent into brothels to rescue them, provide with sexual health screening and counselling them. The government also has other schemes that they are considering bringing into place such as running campaigns aimed at sex buyers to raise awareness about trafficking for sexual exploitation, making it an offence for people to pay for sex with someone who is controlled for another person's gain and launching a national anti-kerb-crawling campaign and support forces in reducing street prostitution.

25

45% said that the government should deal with prostitution.

The problem with media is that it is regularly biased and usually against prostitution and making it seem like a “female only issue.” If people have first found out about prostitution through the media they may begin to create a biased opinion of the topic.

25

Number of respondents

There are currently 61,000 prostitutes living in Britain, even though this is considered to be a profession prostitution can cause a number of concerns for the economy and society. Such as reducing property value, people wanting to avoid the area, safety issues, public health concerns and police integrity. The prostitution profession is worth £5.7 billion a year, this figure came from the office of national statistics in May 2014 based on the assumptions that the average cost for a prostitute is £67, each prostitute has 25 clients per week and work 52 weeks per year. This would mean that the average annual income of a prostitute would be £100,000. However this figure is an average as there is a large variety in the earnings of prostitutes. Street prostitutes charge only £10- £15 for ten minutes where as high class escorts will charge £3,000 for a day.
