BA This first level undergraduate Academic Diploma in Costume and Fashion is the only diploma in the world that combines equally Fashion and Costume subject areas within the same educational path. All of the single subjects help the students develop design and technical competences through a cultural and experimental/ laboratorial approach. The objective is to facilitate the student in finding a job at the end of the program. This is achieved by supporting her/him in building and consolidating a unique creative identity. Creativity must be continuous, and cultural subjects like history of fashion, of Art, of Cinema and Theatre are the platform on which to foster one’s own inspiration. The Accademia di Costume e di Moda has both a long tradition and experience in training and education within the Costume and Fashion fields, qualifying itself as a centre of excellence in learning thanks to its educational offer and approach to teaching and learning. Its alumni are successful and accomplished designers and fashion professionals working within a huge variety of areas within the Fashion System or working as Costume Designers for important productions both at national and international levels.

introduction and course objectives
It is a well-established fact that most great fashion designers have found inspiration in Historical Costume. It is essential as a fashion designer to have a good working knowledge of Costume History. If a designer has the understanding of what has been worn historically and why garments were developed in that manner from a sociological and cultural perspective, this is a great reflective tool enabling the designer to “see the future”. Importantly as an inspirational source to creatively explore period costume structure and form, construction techniques, fit and body shape and experiment with the decorative arts of embellishments, print and embroidery. The richness and diversity of historical costume and dress are an inexhaustible resource that inspires developments, experimentations and can be applied to all genres of collections and markets. The most important international designers of our time are famous for utilising costume influences within their collections. Likewise it is fair to note that when working in Costume the knowledge and skills obtained form having a deep understanding of the Fashion Design process, trends and new technologies regarding both fabrics and construction techniques enhances the design possibilities and proposed outcomes. The structure of the educational path promotes continuous exciting interaction between specific techniques and skills in the fields of both Fashion and Costume, guaranteeing the student an adequate education in culture, style and design within the areas of Costume, Fashion and Accessories. This Degree aims to train professional figures capable of meeting the current needs of companies in both the fashion industry and costume design for theatre, TV and cinema productions: research, experimentation, design, planning and product. The course provides students with a complete education program, which enables them to obtain a good standard of professional competence and technical knowledge.

throughout the course

Visits to museums and galleries, fashion industry headquarters and design studios, costumiers,
cinema, theatre and TV sets and locations are also part of the course.
At the culmination of the Three Year Degree course, following a rigid selection, final year’s students have the opportunity to present their Costume or Fashion Final Work.

costume final work
The Costume Final Work consists in the preparation and presentation of a real Theatre Performance thanks to the collaboration of external important professionals in the field, where actors wear the costumes designed by our students.

duration and attendance
The course duration is three academic years and attendance is mandatory from Monday to Friday; however to be accepted at the final assessments students must have at least 80% proven attendance. The educational path is organized and split into a variety of main subject areas and assessment will be held in three main sessions. The course ends with the discussion of a final dissertation at the end of the third and last Academic year.

At the end of the three-year programme the Careers & Placement Office of the “Accademia Costume e Moda”, in collaboration with some of the main names within the industries of Fashion and Costume design seeks to give the opportunity to graduates to interview for either an internship or for eventual employment. In this way the Accademia offers its students the chance of a concrete professional experience. Many of the leading professional figures within the Fashion and Costume Industry are often alumni of the Accademia, who contact the Accademia to look for new young and creative talents.
