Jeff Schulz TEAM

Waconia’s #1 Selling Real Estate Team

On behalf of the City Council and myself, I would like to welcome you to Waconia! We are thrilled to have you as a guest in our city. We are proud of our city and encourage you to take some time to stroll through our downtown, visiting the shops, and restaurants that offer a diversity of products and services, or visit one of our many fantastic merchants on Highway 5 where Mayor Jim Nash you are sure to have a great experience. Waconia is a community defined by its lake, and I invite you to spend a day fishing, sailing, or enjoying water sports on the second largest lake in the Metro area; it is a wonderful place to spend time with family and friends on the water. Waconia is a wonderful place to raise a family and has a great diversity of award-winning schools, civic organizations, recreational activities, a great community center, ice arena, places of worship, and affords a growing family a beautiful place to call home in close proximity to the greater Metro area. If you are looking to relocate, put Waconia on the top of your list because I think that we have all that you would ever want in a home, and then some. I look forward to meeting you, and again, Welcome to Waconia!

With the perfect mix of small town charm, a progressive business community, a growing population, and an impressive offering of recreational opportunities, there are many reasons why Waconia lives up to its reputation as “Paradise of the Northwest,” a nickname it earned many years ago after becoming a popular resort town. Only a short drive from the hustle and bustle of the Twin Cities, Waconia now boasts more than 10,250 people after being established in 1857 by settlers who found the lake and rich, fertile soils to be an ideal place to begin a community. City officials have done an outstanding job of keeping the city’s identity intact while also welcoming new citizens. A strong business community thrives with the aid of a proactive chamber of commerce. The agriculture tradition is still found in Waconia, from the nearby farms to the annual 3

Kicking off summertime fun A local committee of several dozen people — including Becky Larsen (Event Chair) and Kellie Sites (Event Planner) — worked hard to plan a successful event, which happened on May 11-12. Most events of the Opener were planned for media representatives to get an understanding of the tourism aspects of the community and those events included tours of area attractions, a special kids fishing event, a shore lunch and celebration dinner. More than 100 local fishing hosts took visitors onto the lake for the Opener. One event that was aimed directly at the general public was the community picnic, which was held at City Square Park in Waconia on May 11. Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton enjoyed fishing on Lake Waconia on Saturday, May 12. The Opener was truly a special event that was enjoyed by all in Waconia.

In May 2012, Waconia was fortunate to be the host community for the 2012 Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener — the unofficial kick off of the summer tourism season. Lake Waconia was only the second metro-area lake to be chosen for the Opener, which was created 64 years ago as a way to improve Minnesota’s economy through the development and promotion of the state’s recreational opportunities, especially fishing. Initially, the Opener was a cooperative promotion between the state’s resort industry, media, and public officials. Today, the Opener is a broader effort that celebrates both the host community and statewide recreational opportunities while also marking the start of the summer tourism season in the state of Minnesota. The Waconia Chamber of Commerce began an effort to land the Opener in Waconia several years ago and Waconia was announced as the 2012 site last year. 15

Check out the local library Whether it’s checking out the latest mystery or romance novel, learning how to create a spreadsheet during a computer class, or enjoying a program featuring puppets with the kids, the Waconia Library offers all of the amenities one could desire in their library. The library, which operates through Carver County, is located next to Waconia City Hall in the heart of downtown Waconia. With a collection of more than 40,000 books, DVDs, CDs and other materials, there is no shortage of resources available at the library. One group that is working hard to ensure the success of the library is the Friends of the Waconia Library. This all-volunteer, nonprofit organization has about 70 members that are dedicated to enhancing the services and resources available at the library, many of which are simply not available through the budget alone. One of the main ways the Friends of the 21

Waconia Library raise funds is by holding book sales. These sales are held twice a year, the first in the spring on the Saturday of National Library Week and the second on Nickle Dickle Day, which will be Sept. 15, 2012. Although the group receives money through membership dues ($10 a year per member) and other donations, the book sales represent the largest fundraisers for the group. Each sale generates approximately $1,500 for the Friends of the Waconia Library. The funds have been used for everything from various reading programs and special guest speakers/performers to large print books, shelves, and storytime events. The Waconia Library is located at 217 S. Vine Street. To learn more about the Waconia Library or the Carver County Library system, check out www.carverlib.org.

Finding a good golf swing Island View’s clubhouse has been expanded several times and it reached its current size in 1983. The pro shop is fully stocked with the latest and greatest equipment and apparel, men’s and women’s locker facilities and casual dining. Dan Callahan is the Head PGA Golf Professional at Island View, where full and associate memberships are available. Island View Golf Club is also a popular destination for events of all sizes, from corporate events to wedding receptions, for many citizens, organizations and businesses. Learn more about the club at www.islandviewgolfclub.com. In addition to Island View, there are other golf courses near Waconia. Timber Creek Golf Course is located five miles west of Mound on County Road 15, Deer Run Golf Course is located on County Road 11 near Victoria, and River’s Edge Golf Course is in Watertown.

Waconia seems to have it all — and that includes a scenic, challenging golf course. Island View Golf Club is located on the east side of Waconia and offers its golfers stunning views of Lake Waconia as they traverse the course’s 18 holes. The course was built in 1959 and covers 145 acres. The par-72 course measures 6,578 yards from the blue tees, 6,252 yards from the whites and 5,691 yards from the golds. With fairways that are lined with mature trees, the course’s rolling hills and manicured greens offer championship golf for its players. The club also offers a full length driving range, as well as chipping and putting practice areas. The semi-private course was originally nine holes but was expanded to 18 holes in 1974. The course hosts several leagues and non-members can make tee times at Island View — contact (952) 442-6116 for more information. 23

Celebrating the County Fair A visit to the Carver County Fair offers all that you would expect from a county fair. In terms of food, dozens of food vendors offer everything from cheese curds and mini donuts to hamburgers and tacos and more. A popular midway is also part of the fun, featuring rides and attractions sure to please every member of the family. The fair buildings also feature exhibits from businesses and organizations that are sure to be interesting and educational. Other events, such as the kids activities, demo derbies, live music, shows and more are also part of the fair’s appeal. Of course, a county fair wouldn’t be complete without 4-H and citizen exhibits — from livestock to arts and crafts to photography — and the Carver County Fair has those, too. The Carver County Fair is one event you won’t want to miss in Waconia. To learn more, see www.carvercountyfair.com.

For many people, one of the most treasured events of the summer is going to a good oldfashioned county fair. Citizens in Waconia don’t have to go far to enjoy this annual treat as the Carver County Fair takes place in Waconia. The Carver County Fair celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011 and helped mark the occasion by holding a memorable parade that snaked through downtown Waconia. In 2012, the Carver County Fair will be held Aug. 8-12. The Carver County Fairgrounds are located practically in the middle of Waconia, on the southwest corner of downtown with convenient access by Highway 5. If you’re looking for the fair and the signage isn’t enough, just look for the water tower in the middle of the city as it’s located on the fairgrounds. In time for this year’s fair is a new administration building. 25

A festival of summer bands of the event — will present many of Minnesota’s best high school marching bands. Trophies and prize money will be awarded to the top bands in three classes and additional trophies will be given to the top Wind Section, Color Guard and Drum Line in each class, plus the overall People’s Choice and Grand Champion. Waconia will perform but in exhibition only. In 2011, the Park Center Marching Pirates seized the Grand Champion and People’s Choice awards. The parade starts at 6 p.m. and travels along Main Street in downtown Waconia with breathtaking views of beautiful Lake Waconia. Judging takes place near the intersection of Main Street and Olive Street. The parade lasts about three hours. Be sure to grab your seats early — citizens often leave their chairs in choice seating areas hours in advance, and sometimes even the day before!

One of the strongest traditions in Waconia is the high school marching band, nicknamed Big Black. The marching band is celebrating its 40th season of competition in 2012. Over the years, the Waconia Marching Band has captured more than 230 grand champion or first place awards and has marched in dozens of national festivals and parades, including the 1976 Bicentennial parades in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia. A highlight of the band’s season will be the 14th annual Lake Waconia Band Festival, which is one of the premiere high school marching band events in Minnesota. The festival is always held on the third Saturday of June. In 2012, the event will be held on Saturday, June 16. The festival is a “bands only” parade competition — although the Waconia High School Drumline will pump up the crowd at the start 27

Fishing with the stars In 2012, the Blitz was on and the ice fishing contest, family-friendly events and the chance to spend time fishing with Peterson, Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder, Disney actor Kyle Massey, Nickelodeon actor Chris Massey, Vikings great Chuck Foreman and a multitude of other sports stars, celebrities and elected officials promised to make for an exciting event. Unfortunately, an incredibly mild winter led to the postponement and ultimately the cancellation of the Blitz because ice conditions just weren’t right to hold the event. Organizers are hoping the weather cooperates in 2013 as plans are in the works to hold the 2013 All Day Blizzard Blitz again on Lake Waconia, likely on Martin Lutheran King Jr. Day, which is Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. To learn more about the event, visit www.starkeyhearingfoundation.org.

Ice fishing is a wintertime must for many folks, and being in the heart of Minnesota Vikings country, folks in Waconia are fortunate to have the All Day Blizzard Blitz For Better Hearing family ice fishing contest take place on their very own Lake Waconia. The event is a fundraiser where all proceeds benefit Starkey Hearing Foundation and the Adrian Peterson All Day Foundation to help children in need around the world with the gift of hearing. The All Day Blizzard Blitz was first held on Lake Waconia in 2010. Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was one of more than 1,000 people to attend — the crowd featured both ice fishing enthusiasts and Minnesota Vikings fans alike — and helped raise almost $70,000 (much of that from generous sponsors). A lot of the money raised was for a trip to Uganda to outfit approximately 3,000 children with hearing aids. 31

20th Anniversary Edition

Waconia’s fun fall festival In the early years retailers put all the goods they wanted to sell on tables in front of their shops. A new event was added in the mid 1980s, the Antique and Collector Car and Truck show. Also added were food and craft vendors in City Square Park. In the early 1990s, St. Joe’s added a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and Community Education added fun runs. In 2011, the Waconia Patriot started a pie-eating contest fundraiser for local schools. Along with all of that fun, you’ll see live music, duck races, more than 130 craft booths, 14 food vendors, the library book sale, and a mechanical bull. Then of course there is that staple to Nickle Dickle ... shopping. This remains the biggest selling day for retailers in downtown Waconia — most featuring specials all day long. Mark your calendars for Sept. 15, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One thing you can count on in September is that Nickle Dickle Day is going to be a blast! Held the second Saturday after Labor Day, this annual community celebration delivered by the Waconia Chamber of Commerce brings an estimated 20,000 people to Waconia for a day of old fashioned fun. Its origins are rooted in the deep commitment of the business community to make Waconia a family-friendly destination. In 1961 two business owners, Ralph Molnau and Art Laufenberger, attended a State Chamber of Commerce meeting and were inspired to try something new. They were looking for a way to bring people into town to shop and learned of an event strategy that was working for other towns. The idea they wanted to pursue was sidewalk sales. After much discussion, merchants began to focus on the sale of five cent objects. Laufenberger came up with Nickle Dickle Day. 33

Skating at the ice arena At that time, the city inspects the building for maintenance issues such as mechanical issues the buildings heating and cooling equipment or cracks in the floor under the rink. In December 2011, the WHA organized College Hockey Day, a special event that featured afternoon games by the Waconia High School JV and varsity teams and culminated in the evening with a DIII showdown between the universities of St. Thomas and St. John’s. The WHA is hoping to host College Hockey Day again in 2012. The arena is located at the corner of Oak Avenue and Community Drive, across from the high school. Thanks to the efforts of the Waconia Hockey Association (WHA) and the city of Waconia, the Waconia Ice Arena opened in May 2008. It is used for hockey, figure skating, and much more. The Waconia Ice Arena is used for Waconia High School hockey as well as the WHA. In addition, the community uses the arena for a variety of events, such as open skate, skating lessons, birthday parties, and Rock on Ice, an skating event featuring lights and music. The arena features a single sheet of ice and seats 650 people. It has a heated viewing area and a large mezzanine viewing area. The building is attached to a warming house which serves an outdoor skating area. The arena shuts down from approximately May through July for annual maintenance. 35

A focus on healthy living physicians enjoy a stellar reputation throughout the state’s medical care community. In recent years, Ridgeview has enhanced its service by opening Two Twelve Medical Center, a state-of-the-art emergency/urgent care facility (the first of its kind in the Midwest) off Highway 212 in Chaska, and the Marie Steiner Kelting Hospice Home in Chaska. This facility was the region’s first Medicare-certified hospice offering both general and inpatient care. In addition to founding a new online service, Ridgeview, along with 14 other nationwide sites, is one of the first medical communities to offer RapidArcä radiotherapy technology, a breakthrough technology in cancer treatment. For more information on Ridgeview Medical Center, visit www.ridgeviewmedical.org or contact (952) 442-2191.

When it comes to health care, citizens in Waconia are fortunate to have Ridgeview Medical Center in their hometown. Ridgeview Medical Center, which is nationally-recognized for its commitment to quality and progress in its services, is located at 500 South Maple Street. In 2012, Ridgeview was awarded the highest environmental achievement award presented by Practice Greenhealth, a national membership organization for health care facilities committed to environmentally responsible operations. For the sixth consecutive year — one of only 23 hospitals in the nation to have accomplished this — Ridgeview was recognized as a Sustained Member of the Environmental Leadership Circle, Practice Greenhealth’s highest honor and a distinction no other hospital in Minnesota holds. The award is just one example of the commitment to quality care at Ridgeview, whose 41

A fiery celebration on 4th shores of Lake Waconia as fireworks are fired off in dramatic fashion over the lake from Coney Island. Viewed by boat or shore the display is the grand finale to a day of family gatherings. The fireworks are free to watch but the Waconia Chamber of Commerce does the fund raising through the year to make it all possible. It raises money through generous donations from the presenting sponsor; the Waconia Lions, the generosity of our business community, Waconia residents, civic organizations and the Waconia Chamber of Commerce. If you’d like make donation to the Lake Waconia Fireworks Association for this event, call (952) 442-5812 or send a check to: 209 South Vine Street. The fireworks show, when shot from Coney Island, is best viewed from Cedar Point Park, the In Towne Marina, Lola's Lakehouse, Lake Waconia Regional Park and from a boat! Rain date is July 5.

One of the highlights of summer is the amazing fireworks show over Lake Waconia on the 4th of July. Waconia features brilliant fireworks show every Fourth of July, for more than 25 years. With this long tradition, Waconia is one of the few communities in the metro that has a show that you can enjoy from the shore or from a boat! The credit for the show can go to a group of volunteer pyrotechnics. A core group of licensed pyrotechnics from the community shoots off the show every year. When it’s shot from the island, they spend the entire day loading and unloading a barge that takes over the machinery, then all the explosives. This is an all day process. Then at dusk they shoot the show. Every year they give up their 4th of July. It is much appreciated by all! An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 people will come to Waconia from several neighboring communities and counties. They will line the 43

Triathlon enters 23rd year other athletes start in a “Time-Trial” format, with participants leaving every three seconds. One of the main draws for the elite athletes that are competing in the Lake Waconia Triathlon is the chance to qualify for the Best of the U.S. Amateur Championship triathlon. The top three males and females regardless of age will qualify for this national event. The Lake Waconia Triathlon is the only triathlon where one can qualify from Minnesota for this national triathlon. The 23rd annual Lake Waconia Triathlon will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2012. The event is organized by a non-profit group called Lake Waconia Triathlon, Inc. Proceeds from the event are used for the community groups and events, such July 4th fireworks. To learn more about the Triathlon, see www.lakewaconiatriathlon.net.

Waconia is no stranger to athletic events and the fact that one of the state’s premiere triathlon events takes place in Waconia should come as a surprise no one. The Lake Waconia Triathlon is an annual event that attracts hundreds of participants with a variety of skill levels — from elite athletes to novices — who range in age from 15 to 80. The event includes a 1/2-mile swim, 20-mile bike ride and 4-mile run. The race starts and finishes near the public beach at Lake Waconia Regional Park. The athletes swim 1/4-mile out to a buoy and back before embarking on a 20-mile bike ride that runs through downtown Waconia and into the countryside. After the ride and back at the beach, the triathletes run for four miles through downtown Waconia and back to the beach. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. with elite athletes and teams starting in a wave format. All 45

Feeding a hungry nation strong in Carver County. In 2012, four farms, including one in Waconia, were recognized by the Minnesota State Fair and the Minnesota Farm Bureau as 2012 Century Farms. Qualifying farms have been in continuous family ownership for at least 100 years and are 50 acres or more. Century Farm families receive a commemorative sign, as well as a certificate signed by the State Fair and Minnesota Farm Bureau presidents and Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton. The 2012 Century Farms for Carver County are the Raymond and Ann Hilk LP farm of Waconia (year of original purchase was 1911), the Mark and Renee Schlueter farm of Cologne (1869), the Ron and Debbie Kassulker and Larry and Marilyn Kassulker farm of Mayer (1895), and the Terry and Jill Bruesehoff farm of Norwood Young America (1887).

With its plentiful residential, commercial and industrial areas, it’s easy to forget that Waconia is located smack dab in the middle of an area that has a long tradition of agriculture. Indeed, it’s not uncommon to drive through Waconia and come across a farmer working in his field or a herd of cows lazily munching tall sweeps of grass in a pasture. Historically, Carver County ranks 10th in the state with the number of dairy cows and dairy production. Although residential growth has made slow but steady progress in the county over that past several decades, there are still close to 200 farms in operation. Dairy isn’t the only focus of area farms, crop production continues to be a staple as the area’s fertile topsoil remains an inviting opportunity for those who love to work the land. The area’s farming tradition remains 47

The Reserve is located at 7025 Victoria Drive, off of CSAH 11. Old sleds to see, touch, hear competitions, and more. Don’t forget about the food — in one recent year, attendees ate 500 pork chops, 1,300 hot dogs and 40 gallons of chili during the event! The Ride-In annually attracts thousands of people every year. In 2012, Chaparral was the featured snowmobile for the event. In 2013, the featured sled will be Scorpion & Brut. The Ride-In is hosted by Midwest Vintage Snowmobile Shows (MVSS) and the Antique Snowmobile Club of America and in 2012 was sponsored by SnoStuff. All proceeds from the event support local snowmobile clubs and local organizations, such as the Watertown Lions, also participate during the event. If you’re a true sled head, the 2013 Waconia Ride-In is definitely worth a weekend circled on your calendar. To learn more about the 2013 Waconia Ride-In, visit www.mwvss.com.

If you enjoy snowmobiles both past and present, Waconia is the place to be in January. The 2013 Waconia Ride-In — billed as “The World’s Largest Vintage & Antique Snowmobile Event” — will be held on Lake Waconia and at the Waconia Event Center at Lake Waconia Regional Park on Jan. 26-27, 2013. The event is also known by some people as The VSCA Midwest Ride-In. At this family-friendly event, snowmobile enthusiasts will have the chance to meet and visit with other snowmobile lovers, browse the offerings of a large swap meet, and go on a 11-mile vintage snowmobile ride with more than 800 other riders. One can also watch Oval Racers Alliance (ORA) oval races and side-by-side snowmobile races, participate in a loud snowmobile contest, enter your favorite sled in judged 53

Show choir takes the stage At Star Power, organizers work to provide an exceptional show choir experience for all performers, directors, adjudicators and spectators. The event features outstanding facilities with state of the art sound and lights. Organizers have made it a point to feature a diverse panel of judges, which include wellrespected experts in the show choir world from across the nation. Star Power is an all-day event that promises a plethora of family-friendly entertainment. In 2012, thousands people from multiple states traveled to Waconia to attend the event, which saw Bemidji High School’s “Vocalmotive” group win Grand Champion. To learn more about the family of show choirs at Waconia High School, or the Waconia Choir Boosters, visit www.waconiachoirs.org.

The popularity of the show “Glee” would be hard pressed to match the enthusiasm and dedication shown by Power Company, the varsity competition show choir at Waconia High School led by director Aaron Olson. With its energetic performances, Power Company — along with Waconia’s other competitive show choirs The Current, Pulse and Shockwave — has established itself as one of the Midwest’s top high school show choirs. In fact, Power Company has been ranked among the nation’s top 10 show choirs. One of the highlights of the year for the family of Waconia Show Choirs is Star Power, “Where Show Choirs Shine,” aka The Lake Waconia Show Choir Invitational. Some of the Midwest’s top high school show choirs compete in this event, which will be held at Waconia High School on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013. 59

Nature at its absolute best information, research and public education; to develop and evaluate plants and horticultural practices for cold climates; and to inspire and delight all visitors with quality plants in well-designed and maintained displays, collections, model landscapes, and conservation areas. If you visit the Arboretum, don’t miss the fun and interesting attractions located in the Oswald Visitor Center, the Leon C. Snyder Education and Research Building, and other buildings, such as Frog Hollow, which houses the craft workshop of the Arboretum Auxiliary, and restaurants and gift shops. The Arboretum plans special events yearround, including a winter holiday spectacular complete with sleigh rides, so the fun isn’t limited to the times of year that the flowers are in bloom. To learn more about the Arboretum, check out www.arboretum.umn.edu.

If you love to get lost in the beauty of nature, you might never return from a visit to the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, which is located a few miles east of Waconia at 3675 Arboretum Drive in Chaska. The Arboretum features more than 1,000 acres of awe-inspiring gardens, model landscapes, and natural areas — including woodlands and wetlands and prairie — with extensive collections of northern-hardy plants. A popular pastime for Arboretum visitors is to take a tour of the facility’s 12.5 miles of garden paths and hiking trails. Many people choose to walk the gardens that are close to the visitors center and then bike, walk or drive Three-Mile Drive to see more gardens and collections. The professionals at the Arboretum strive to provide a community and national resource for horticultural and environmental 63

A real Rail Trail to explore been a Hennepin County mix of communities. The trail offers terrific views of Lake Waconia. The Railroad corridor continues west through the city of New Germany to the McLeod County Line. Phase II of the trail project is planned for 2012. In the coming years, the trail will extend into McLeod County, ending in Lester Prairie, and once complete, the Dakota Rail Regional Trail will be 44 miles long. People wanting to use the Dakota Rail Trail in Carver County can find parking at the trailhead in Mayer, which is located just off of Highway 25, or park on Kennedy Memorial Drive, just a block north of Highway 7, in St. Bonifacius. A map of the trail is located at both places and while on the trail, users will notice that a map is available every two miles. To learn more about the Dakota Rail Trail, visit www.dakotarailtrail.com.

When it comes to walking, biking and inline skating, what could be better than the opportunity to enjoy miles of paved, flat path through beautiful, scenic forests, lakes and meadows? The Dakota Rail Trail is currently a 20-mile paved trail that follows the former Dakota Rail Corridor from Mayer to Wayzata. The trail follows a route taken by millions of bushels of wheat and grain as they journeyed from Great Plains farms toward the flour milling centers in Minneapolis. Initially, the Dakota Rail Trail was 13.5 miles long and went from St. Bonifacius through Minnetrista, Mound, Spring Park, Minnetonka Beach, Orono, and ended in Wayzata. This portion was constructed in 2008. In 2011, the trail was extended seven miles to the west from St. Bonifacius to Mayer, incorporating Carver County into what had 65

Crown’s college experience St. Paul Bible College, and in the years that followed, Crown College expanded its curriculum and introduced many new majors and areas of study. At this time, the college built up the campus and added several housing facilities that now accommodates many types of students, including those with families. In 1992, the name was changed to Crown College. That same year, Crown launched its Adult & Graduate Studies programs, which offers associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees for adults who have already taken on the responsibility of a full-time job, family, or both. Crown offers online programs that have been ranked in the Top 10 among all Christian colleges and universities. Crown plays athletics in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. To learn more about Crown College, visit www.crown.edu.

For many aspiring college students in the Waconia area, college isn’t some far off place in another state, it’s just a stone’s throw away from home at Crown College, which offers its students more than 40 accredited degree programs, ranging in topics from pastoral leadership to nursing to communications. Crown College is nestled away on a beautiful 215-acre campus located off of County Road 92 to the east of Waconia and just south of St. Bonifacius. The college got its start in 1916 with just four students who wanted to study the Bible. Soon, Crown College developed into a training school for those interested in ministry and missionary work. A few years later, the college became known as St Paul Bible Institute and gained a solid reputation as a leader in the Bible college movement throughout the Midwest. In the late 1950s, the name was changed to 69

Kona Championship on tap having been held in Waconia over the last 30 years. Its higher sea level elevation, favorable winds and launching facilities make it ideal for championship caliber windsurfing. The 2012 Kona North American Championship will be held Aug. 24-26, 2012. Organizers promise that the event, which is being offered to more than 80 of the top U.S. and international windsurf racers, will be the largest, most balanced and equal competition ever experienced. Previous to this year’s event, all Kona windsurfing competitions in North America were held in Florida, as the board distributor was located there and supplied charter boards to the fleet. Race competitors in August will all use KonaŽ brand windsurfers. For more information about the 2012 Kona North American Championship, log on to www.Fleet8.com.

Without question, Lake Waconia is well known for its recreational opportunities, whether one is looking to go swimming and play in the sand at the beach or go fishing for that elusive trophy muskie near Coney Island. In the summer of 2012, however, the lake will become an even brighter shining star on the metro-area map of recreation when it hosts the 2012 Kona North American Championship, the first major and largest windsurfing championship in the Midwest since the 1980s. Minneapolis-based windsurfing competition event organizer Fleet 8 announced earlier this year that the event was coming to Lake Waconia, and there are reasons why the lake was chosen. Since the 1970s, Lake Waconia has established itself as a top U.S. venue for competitive windsurfing with over 60 major races 71

20th Anniversary Edition

Waconia Heritage Association Board members Mary Happ, Joann Gorman, Nancy Anderson, Paul Melchert and Mary Erhard work on the group’s second history book.

Preserving Waconia heritage history books. The goal of the WHA is to have the book written by the end of 2012 and have hard copies available for purchase in the summer of 2013. Citizens may pre-order the book starting in the late fall of 2012 by contacting Happ at (952) 442-2570. Even after the second book is completed, the WHA doesn’t plan on taking a break. Citizens are still welcome to visit the group’s wide collection of historical articles and essays, many of which were used as sources for the history books. Citizens are also welcome to contact the WHA to take a walking tour of the city of Waconia. A brochure is available at Waconia City Hall and features 22 historic stops within a 1.7 mile walk in downtown Waconia. Since its inception in 1983, the WHA works to “discover and memorialize the heritage and history of the area.” To learn more, contact Anderson at (952) 955-3493.

With research, books and other means, a dedicated group of people are making sure that the history of Waconia is not forgotten. The Waconia Heritage Association (WHA) meets from 1 to 3 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at Waconia City Hall. The WHA Board includes Mary Happ, Joann Gorman, Nancy Anderson, Paul Melchert, Lois Johnson, Mary Erhard and Will Yetzer. In 1986, the WHA published “Waconia: Paradise of the Northwest The Lake and Its Island,” a book focusing on Lake Waconia and Coney Island. In the years since, a second book has been in the works and the WHA is now close to finishing that second book, which will have a much wider focus on all things Waconia. Although the book is nearing completion, the WHA is still looking for old photos from Waconia for the book. The second book will be published by Walsworth Publishing, which specializes in 73

On the Edge of the Big Woods the Big Woods Art Wander” Guide which will be available at Mocha Monkey in Waconia and at each of the participating sites on the days of the event. More information can be found at artwander.com. Guests will be incentivized to visit all studios as several local businesses will provide rewards to all who present their “Wander Card” with each art destination checked. One fortunate wanderer with a fully checked card will be the winner of a drawing to receive a small sample of most participating artists’ work. The Metropolitan Regional Arts Council awarded a $5,000 grant to “The Edge of the Big Woods Art Wander.” It is expected that many other local businesses, organizations, groups and individuals will help create an inspiring and exciting event to enhance the quality and culture of the community.

“The Edge of the Big Woods Art Wander” will premiere on Sept. 29-30, 2012 in western Carver County, anchored in Waconia. Dakota tribes and early European immigrants referred to the dense forest east of the vast plains as the “big woods,” which is now western Carver County. This area will provide a beautiful backdrop as families, singles, young, old, and in-between “wander” to approximately 18 Carver County artists’ studios. Given the distance, “wandering” will likely be done in vehicles. Many art mediums from traditional to experimental will be represented: painting, jewelry, weaving, sculpting, wood working, photography, potting and invention. Over 30 artists will be demonstrating their art and interacting to give wanderers the opportunity to see and hear about the process of art creation and to form meaningful and beneficial relationships with artists. All artists will be featured in “The Edge of 75
