FREEDOM FARM IS HELPING OTHERS
OVERCOME CHALLENGES story by heather hollermann // photos submitted
“This is our everything, Freedom Farm founder and executive director, Susie Bjorklund, said of the 2018 11th Annual Polo Event Fundraiser. A 501(c)3 organization, Freedom Farm is a therapeutic riding center in Watertown that offers programs to help improve the lives of children and adults with physical, mental and emotional challenges. According to their website, they strive to improve mobility, build confidence and encourage personal growth by partnering with the many unique attributes of horses. They work with veterans, at-risk teens, kids and many more. “We have many [participants] who cannot pay, Bjorklund explained. “We never turn anyone away for inability to pay and what we do charge is very minimal. ‘ Freedom Farm relies heavily on volunteers and donations to continue growing. The Annual Polo Event Fundraiser is their number one fundraiser, and according to Bjorklund, it is essential to their survival.
“We totally count on the funds raised for this as the need continues to increase, and we are trying to keep up with that need and it costs money to do that, she said. Taking place on Sept. 8 at Blackberg Ranch in Watertown, this year marks the fundraiser’s 11th year. The annual event draws crowds of nearly 2,500 people. “We are so blessed to have a professional polo field 10 minutes from Freedom Farm, Bjorklund said. “The Berg family, [owners of Blackberg Ranch] just loves Freedom Farm and they will do anything to support us. They are just so generous for all that they do for this event. Every single penny goes to Freedom Farm. With professional polo players from

both Minnesota and other states, the polo match at the fundraising event is an incredible experience, Bjorklund explained. Although this is a fundraising event, the players are actually competing to win so it’s also a very serious game. The best way to watch the polo match is in the VIP tents. Lining the field, these tents allow for an up close and personal view of the game. Families or businesses who pay for one of these tents can invite their guests to come hang out in their tent. “It’s really the best way to watch the match because the horses are literally sometimes in your tent! You’re just right there,â€? Bjorklund said. “People will be completely wowed!â€? Kicking off with a polo demonstration at 12:30 p.m., the actual polo match doesn’t begin until 1:30 p.m. Furthermore, during half time Freedom Farm will hold a number of activities including a live auction, Fund-A-Need and the Best Hat Contest. The hat contest is one of Bjorklund’s favorite parts of the event. Similar to the Kentucky Derby, people are encouraged to come to the event wearing a fun hat. “Our Freedom Farm riders decorate hats and sell them too, so if you don’t have a hat, we want you to come buy one that day,â€? Bjorklund said. “It blows me away what a good job the riders do. They’re beautiful, decorated, brand new hats‌It’s just so fun because if you don’t have a hat, you can buy one there and it’s one that one of the Freedom Farm riders actually made.â€?
Of course, it wouldn’t be a polo match without the halftime divot stomp as well. During the match, small patches of grass and dirt are torn up by the horses’ quick starts, stops and turns which can be dangerous. The divot stomp includes welcoming all the spectators onto the field to help stomp the divots back down. For an extra bit of fun, a medallion is hidden on the field. Anyone who finds the medallion wins a prize. The 11th Annual Polo Event Fundraiser is an event the entire family can enjoy. In addition to the polo match, those in attendance will be able to enjoy a petting zoo, pony rides, carriage rides, face painting, kids crafts, a photo booth, and much more. Cuisine from B’s on the River and other alcoholic beverages will also be available for purchase. “It’s such a big area so you’re not all scrunched in. The grounds are beautiful and kids can go from all the kids stuff to watching the match and do it all over again. There’s no fee for any of that which I know the parents appreciate because they’re not being asked for money all day long,â€? Bjorklund said. “What’s so awesome about it is you can come with your family and it’s so much fun for little kids. You can also come either as a group of guys or girls or couples. You can dress up and drink champagne or run around in your shorts‌It’s the kind of event that really everybody has fun with.â€? One of the other biggest draws to the 11th Annual Polo Event is the car show put on by Horses and Horsepower LLC Events. Organizing high-end car shows since 2007, Horses and Horsepower Events LLC is partnering with the Freedom Farm annual fundraiser for the second
year in a row. The car show will showcase an assemblage of between 50 and 80 classic and exotic cars totaling $150$200 million dollars in value. Some of the makes in the Horses and Horsepower Events LLC shows include: Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Auburn, Bentley, Bugatti, Duisenberg, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Maserati, McLaren, Mercedes, Morgan, Packard, Porsche, Rolls Royce and many others.

“Last year was such a huge success that everybody is so excited to not only see these cars again but also the car show owners who are excited to support the cause and come back again, Bjorklund said. “I’m looking forward to the car show owners and just how they have embraced our event. Due to the sheer size of the event, Freedom Farm relies on its volunteers to help run it smoothly. According to Bjorklund, it takes hundreds of volunteers for set up, during, and after the event. “It’s huge for us to try to get enough volunteers, she explained. “If people can’t come the day of, there’s always the beforehand. We have to load up trailers for set up. There’s just so much. Volunteers can get more information about the event and sign up by visiting the Freedom Farm website. The 11th Annual Polo Event Fundraiser will take place on Sept. 8 at Blackberg Ranch, 1980 Sally Avenue, Watertown. Tickets are available at the gate. General admission is $20 and children 12 or under are free. Events run from 12:30p.m. to 4p.m. For more information about sponsorship, the VIP tents, or the event itself, contact 952-9552505 or info@freedomfarmMN.org or visit www.freedomfarmmn.org

There’s something about classic American cars that never goes out of style: from the iconic tailfins and gleaming chrome of a ’57 Chevy to the powerful engine and sleek design of the ’68 Ford Mustang Fastback, vintage cars have an undeniable allure that crosses generations. Nowhere is that appeal more evident than in the showroom of Hooked On Classics, a family-run classic car dealership in Watertown. “It’s something you either get attracted to or you don’t, but if you got it, it’s bad, says Daryl Kirt, who started the business that his son, Nate Kirt, now runs. “It’s kind of in your blood.

Daryl had a love of cars from an early age. “I bought my first car when I was 12, but my mother wouldn’t let me drive it so I ended up just taking it apart, he says. By his midteens, Daryl was painting cars and working on motors at a body shop. After he was drafted and returned from the service, he con-

Originally located in Chanhassen, the business moved to Watertown in 1990. The 72,000-square-feet showroom is home to dozens of rare, vintage automobiles, from a ’30s Ford Model A to mid-2000s Chevrolet Corvettes and everything inbetween. Hooked On Classics has had many celebrity clients over the years, including local athletes and Prince. “We did a lot of business with Prince; he went to the same high school I did in Minneapolis and he really liked old cars,” Daryl notes. “Dad sold cars to Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top, the Bee Gees, a lot of sports players,” says Nate. Like his dad, Nate developed a love of cars early on, working on them after school and eventually taking over the family business when Daryl retired (though you’ll still find both Nate and Daryl in the showroom most days). These days, the overseas market for classic cars is growing, and Hooked On Classics has shipped cars to collectors in Norway, Sweden, Germany and Dubai who are captivated by the cars, movies and culture of 20th century America. “They’re obsessed with American culture,â€? Nate says. “America usually had the luxury in a lot of the eras to put more art and style in to their cars, more chrome; a lot of countries weren’t in a position to do chrome like on a ’57 Cadillac.â€? “I think people can relate to it because it’s fun,â€? Daryl adds. He remembers selling high-performance cars to sheikhs from the Middle East who would race them for pink slips on Friday nights, like a scene straight out of an old movie. The popularity (and price) of any given make or model is also being affected by the rise of reality TV shows based around antique car restoration, which can turn an obscure car in to a musthave overnight with a single episode.

“Cycles used to be about 10 years or more, now a cycle can be within six months to a year when something’s hot or cold already, Nate says. Though some buyers see older cars as an investment, for many car enthusiasts it’s all about enjoying the ride. “The trend is to have a car you can enjoy, Nate says. “Every community now has little drive-ins, and that kind of shows the culture of wanting to get out and share it and drive it and enjoy it, instead of just putting it on glass and staring at it. A passion for restoring a car to its original glory is shared by many of Hooked On Classics clients. There are countless styles of seats, dashboards and wheels to choose from when it comes to customizing a car, but, as Daryl observes, “you can never go wrong by keeping it original.

Keeping the aesthetic traditional but updating the mechanics is an increasingly popular choice, as well. “What I see trending is, if you want to modify it, you put in air conditioning [and] things that make them drivable, and the new engines are fabulous,” Daryl says. “They call it a ‘restomod,’” Nate says. “Aesthetically, it does look like the old car, but you pop the hood and it’ll have the fuel-injected engine, disc brakes, all that kind of stuff; so, some of the creature comforts of a newer car, but it looks original.” While trends come and go, Daryl and Nate agree that in this business, the key to success will always be in building close, genuine relationships with buyers and sellers. “If you do a good job, you’re in contact with your clients 24/7; it’s not a 9-5,” Nate says. “We can arrange the financing for them, the shipping, the appraisals, anything they need…once you do a good job and become friends, then they just call you and ask what you have.” “It’s almost like an adoption center,” Daryl says of the showroom. “We take it real personal; sure, we have to make a living and we pay our bills, but first and foremost is the people, then the cars.” Both Daryl and Nate are adamant about maintaining Hooked On Classics’ reputation as a family-run resource for car lovers and collectors. Nate is already grooming the next generation; his eight-year-old son, Wyatt, who goes by the nickname “Spider,” loves big-block engines and riding shotgun when his dad moves the cars.

Minnetonka Drive-In offers taste of yesteryear story by megan smith // photos submitted
Looking for a fun, unique dining experience this summer? The Minnetonka Drive In has been in the Westonka community for 57 years and they’re still cooking! Take a blast to the past in this classic style, drive-in restaurant, and visit on Thursday nights for a show of auto memorabilia and classic cars night. With their unique dining experience guests order and have their homemade food and root beer delivered by carhop, but for those who would prefer to order ahead of time, the restaurant also offers online ordering. The Drive In first opened as an A&W in 1961 as a family business run by Gordon and Jeanette Bennyhoff and their eight children. As one of these eight children, current co-owner of the Minnetonka Drive In, Dave Bennyhoff, was washing the glass gallon root beer jugs from the age of nine. “Dave’s parents started the business in 1961 so he was nine years old when the business started, says Deb Bennyhoff, co-owner of The Minnetonka Drive In. “It completely was a family thing so all the kids worked there when they were younger. Dave was the only one that stayed longer.
After 25 years the Bennyhoffs decided that it was time for their A&W to become an independent restaurant, and soon after the decision was made it became The Minnetonka Drive In. Not much about the restaurant changed with this decision however, because according to Dave Bennyhoff, “Back when we were A&W you could kind of do whatever you wanted as long as you served A&W root beer. So Gordon Bennyhoff developed his own homemade menu and community feel to his restaurant from the very beginning. Dave Bennyhoff says that his father created his own menu because,
“he just didn’t like using stuff out of the can or jar, he was a real cook. And there was a lot of cooking in our family so we just learned it. Over the years, their classic menu and homestyle cooking hasn’t changed much, so paying a visit to the drive-in makes it easy to feel like you are stepping back into the 1960s.
“ “Anything we did in the ’60s we’re still doing. We’re a very classic, original ’60s drive-in. What people don’t realize is the majority of our cooking is scratch cooking. We like giving top quality foods, fresh meat. I think that’s something we specialize in, we specialize in doing a really good job. We’re well known for our homemade recipes like our chicken and our onion rings, we’re still making homemade root beer, adds Dave Bennyhoff.

“It’s very nostalgic, says Deb Bennyhoff. “We’re very family oriented so the kids run around on the grass. I mean we’ve had some really wonderful reviews about people who come in. It’s just really a step back in time, a landmark, whatever you want to call it. I mean some people don’t really even remember what a drivein is because so many of them disappear if you’re too young, but for those people it’s a new experience. Plus we also have the Dakota bike trail right behind us so we get people off the trail. So it’s just kind of a destination. Not only does The Minnetonka Drive In attract families but it is still very much a family-run business as well. Dave and Deb Bennyhoff’s grandchildren work at the restaurant as the fourth generation of Bennyhoffs to serve in the Drive In, and they consider their other employees to be a part of the family, too. “We really do get very close to our employees. It is really like a big family, says Deb Bennyhoff. “I tell some of the other parents, ‘We spend more time with your kids than you do when they’re teenagers.’ So it really is like a big family, we really do get to know them.
Once the summer season comes to an end, the Minnetonka Drive In continues their business by selling pumpkins, spruce tops, and Christmas trees through the holidays. The Bennyhoffs believe that it is good for the community to see them with their doors open for as long as possible, even when they aren’t operating as a drive-in. “It means a lot to the people that live out here when a business stays for a long time because it’s really not an easy place to run a business because, generally, when people want to go shopping or dining or whatever they tend to head east, says Dave Bennyhoff. “I think it’s just nice to have something that stays around for a while. Of course, running a small business has its drawbacks as well. “When it’s a small business you have to be here all the time or you have to be on call all the time, says Deb Bennyhoff. “You just literally can’t go very far away from the business because you’ve just got to be here, she explains. However, at the end of the day, the Bennyhoffs have found their work with the Minnetonka Drive In to be fulfilling and enjoyable work. “There’s just a lot to it that’s gratifying, says Dave Bennyhoff. “In the end even though there’s so much work to it and you’re not able to do the things that a normal family does in the summer, still you go home at night and you have a sense of accomplishment that maybe you’ve just given somebody a little better day today.

She shares that an example of one of these projects is “the doggy poo stations along the Anderson Sister trail.

“I think pets connect us, says Piepkorn. “It really is a small town community event that dogs are just bringing us together. And really, it’s just fun. And it’s fun for the dogs to get out and see other dogs, too. She adds that the fact that Westonka is able to have an event like this truly reflects on the quality and compassion of this community. “I think that little community gatherings like this really help people feel like they belong to a community. And a community that cares for pets and animals I think is a really good thing because pets can’t speak for themselves, so if you have people who are advocates for pets in our community I think that just tells you how caring our community is and how very thoughtful the people in our community are.

Everyone is invited to attend this free community event, and it promises to be a fun time even for those who don’t have a pet. Dogs and humans aren’t the only ones invited either. All pets are welcome to attend the event as long as they are properly restrained. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a donation item that will be split between WeCAN and the Westonka Food Shelf. Pet items such as dog and cat food, and cat litter, are preferred. Driving up Hwy. 33 north of Norwood Young America, blink and you might miss the turnoff to one of the western metro’s top recreational spots: Baylor Regional Park. Tucked away amid the farmland, the 201-acre park offers an escape from the bustling scene of the metro and offers a little something for everyone. For Sam Pertz, The Carver County Parks and Trails Supervisor, that seclusion is what gives Baylor the charm not seen by many other parks.

“You get this far out to Baylor, you’re in a different setting that is more parallel, in my perspective, to park space. It’s quieter, it’s agriculture around, it’s the country, Pertz said. “Whereas you leave the other parks, and as you go into the metro system—a fair amount of the regional parks are built around neighborhoods, built

around suburbs. I always appreciate Baylor or what’s around (it).” The L-shape park boats a wide array of activities all year round for campers or nature lovers alike. The eastern tip is wrapped by the coastline of scenic Eagle Lake. The northern end features an extensive trail system or any non-motorized use. The largest draw, Pertz said, is the campground. CAMPING Baylor offers 50 camping sites to suit a variety of options for the discerning camper. For those looking to rough it, 15 of the sites are primitive. There you can pitch your tent and enjoy nature’s splendor. For those that want a little more luxury, the other 35 sites feature water and electrical hook-ups. “Camping is the big draw here, aside from just the aesthetics of the park and trails,” Pertz said. “What separates us with a camping perspective is it’s a really aesthetically pleasing campground. Lots of shade. The water feature draws a lot of people; they think it’s neat to camp by water.” The heavily wooded campground does indeed provide ample shade; something he notes is a draw to campers in the hot sum-
“ ” mer months. A small creek, an offshoot of Eagle Lake, cuts through the campground offering campers the tranquility of camping next to the water. Surrounding the eastern edge of the park and zigzagging through the northern woods is a 3.5-mile trail system for visitors to explore. Not only running through wooded areas, the trail system also boasts an extensive floating boardwalk that cuts through the wetlands—joining the camping area with the southern portion of the park, where many other activities for park-goers lie. DISC GOLF Baylor features an 18-hole disc golf course that stretches across the open southern edge, and has become a destination for that feature alone. “We get a lot of people coming from the metro for that, because they like to play the courses in the area. It’s a fairly challenging course,â€? Pertz said. “It was professionally designed and laid out.â€?

FACILITIES The southern portion of the park features several other activities for park goers to enjoy during their stay. Here there are picnic areas, a ball field, tennis courts, a sand volleyball court and horseshoe pits to ensure no one will ever be bored. Multiple shelters dot the park, from picnic shelters to the beach house, to help escape either rain or the summer sun. All are reservable for events.

EAGLE LAKE OBSERVATORY Being situated so far from the metro created a unique opportunity for Baylor. With so little light pollution, the park hosts the Eagle Lake Observatory. The observatory is owned and managed by the Minnesota Astronomical Society (MAS) and serves as their main community outreach center for the metro. The MAS hosts regular ‘star parties,’ were those curious about astronomy can come to the observatory free-of-charge and have an opportunity to learn about the stars and use the sophisticated telescopes that reside in the two buildings. The barn-shaped Onan Observatory houses over a dozen telescopes on four observing platforms for guests to look upwards through. The dome-topped silo is the Sylvia A. Casby Observatory, which houses three much larger and more powerful telescopes on a single platform that peers through the top of the dome. Each observatory has the ability to display live video images of what the telescopes are viewing on monitors as well as in the HotSpot Classroom, which rests in between the two.
