Dancin On Broadway When Dancin On Broadway opened its doors in 1984, owner Tammy Thiel had the idea that dance is for everyone and should be fun. Thirty-two years later, that is still her be-

lief and the inspiration for all the exceptional dance classes at her studio. It was a humble beginning with one dance floor, a small reception area, Tammy as the teacher, and her sister, Debbie Thiel, as her assistant. Their first dance season in Brooklyn Park had 97 students. Most of those dancers had never danced before. By their third year, they had already expanded Dancin On Broadway to include a large reception area with a retail store, and a larger dance floor. Dancin On Broadway’s approach to dance was a hit with the community and the word spread like wild fire. Through the years, Dancin On Broadway has grown to over 1,800 current students consisting of girls, boys, teens, young adults, ladies, men, grandmas and grandpas. In their two locations in Maple Grove and Elk River. Dancin On Broadway has eight large dance floors, plus two solo rooms, two retail stores and an ever growing motivated staff. Dancin On Broadway is one of the largest dance supply stores in the Midwest. They not only cater to the needs of dancers, but to actors and dance teams alike. Their retails stores are open to the public with new merchandise arriving daily. With a variety of classes, such as ballet, jazz, hip hop, tap, lyrical, contemporary, pointe, father/daughter, mother/daughter and gymnastics, there is a class for everyone and Dancin On Broadway’s amazing teaching staff will bring it to them. Most of the teachers teach many forms of dance which enhances their ability to teach and create a stronger more technical dancer. The talented teaching staff teaches dancers in three different dance levels: Recreational, Pre-Performing and Performing. The Pre-Performing and Performing Levels are both competitive levels of dance. Their Recreational Dance Program is second to none. The Recreational Classes are a positive, exploration of dance bringing together three dance styles to engage each dancer. With the love of dance brings the desire to take it to the next level. Dancin On Broadway’s Pre-Performing Lines were created for dancers who want to learn more technique, and compete, but only want to commit to one day of dance per week. The Performing Lines are for the dancer who loves the hard work and dedication that it takes to learn the advanced technique and skills that a dancer needs to be successful. Performing Line dancers have the choice to take additional
classes to get the most out of the dance education and to enhance their performance. Each year Dancin On Broadway’s Spring Recitals are like no other. The fully staged shows enhance the dancers with theater sound, light effects, and many beautiful backdrops, state of the art LED curtain and props. Their dancers proudly enter the stage in their dazzling costumes. Dancin On Broadway takes pride in providing complete costumes for their dancers. Parents do not have to sew or rhinestone, or do any alterations. Dancin On Broadway takes care of it all. Dancin On Broadway is involved in many community events such as: talents shows, parades, county fairs and dance showcases. Their dancers also compete both regionally and nationally. Dancin On Broadway has won many National Titles over the years. At Dancin On Broadway, dance is more than just dance. It is about making new friendships, trying something new, learning self awareness, confidence, self-esteem, poise, team work, and so much more. education. The five directors on staff have almost 100 years of combined funeral service experience. In addition to the immediate funeral planning services, Evans-Nordby also helps individuals and families with advance funeral planning. Planning ahead is a way to make decisions about funeral arrangements before a death occurs. Then, when families lose a loved one, they can focus on gathering together, paying tribute, and starting the healing process. The advance planning specialist, Doug Stolt, is experienced at helping families and individuals with pre-planning. At Evans-Nordby Funeral Homes, staff is dedicated to supporting the community and the families whom it serves. One of the ways it does this is by hosting free informational seminars on a variety of topics, such as preplanning and pre-funding, funeral and cremation options, veteran’s benefits, and medical assistance and Medicaid. Many of the seminars are held in the Osseo and Brooklyn Center locations. The funeral directors are also available to give educational seminars at churches, schools, care facilities, assisted living facilities, senior residences, or other locations. New Central Park, business, residential growth keeps Maple Grove moving forward BY ALICIA MILLER SUN PRESS NEWSPAPERS The city of Maple Grove continues to move forward with development. The year 2015 brought the city new development in the areas of businesses and residential, as well as a new unique feature — Central Park of Maple Grove. Central Park is a 40-acre park that has been in the works for many years. The park area was officially labeled as an urban park in 2008. It took over three years of planning and designing by the Maple Grove Park Board. The park offers several amenities including: a main building with restrooms, concessions, skate rentals, warming house during skating season and other rentals in the warmer months. The park also has an on-sale intoxicating liquor license for rental events.
Just outside of the main building is a pergola with tables and chairs. There is also an interactive fountain on a 2,100-square-foot plaza with 67 sprays and LED lights. The park also offers sports courts for pickleball and basketball as well as a garden area with a labyrinth. There is a large 2.5-acre great lawn area that can be used for picnics, playing catch and more. A large storm pond is also located on the site, but swimming and fishing are not allowed. The playground area features seven play zones, including a 24-foot climbing tower, four slides, unique swings and a 120-foot long climbing wall. The most unique feature at Central Park is the ice skating loop that features a 810 linear foot and 20 foot-wide refrigerated concrete surface with lights and music. The loop is open during the winter months through mid-March.

Gleason’s Gymnastic School Gleason’s Gymnastic School has a long history. Owner Larry Gleason has over 55 years of experience as a gymnast, competitor, teacher, coach and judge. As captain of the University of Minnesota Men’s Gymnastics Team, Gleason was an allaround champion and went on to become a national competitor in both gymnastics and trampoline. He started his school in 1966 as a recreational program only. Back then, Gleason and several of his gymnastic friends enjoyed demonstrating and performing. They organized a road show of four men and four women gymnasts. The show included tumbling, trampoline, vaulting, hand balancing, rhythmic gymnastics and comedy all set to music. During the summers, the troupe traveled to small Minnesota towns to perform. Gleason’s Gymnastics has been providing the benefits of gymnastics training to girls and boys in a safe and positive learning atmosphere since 1966. It is the goal of Gleason’s to offer a gymnastic program that ensures the development of confidence and a positive self-image through successful experiences for every student. It teaches body awareness and fitness skills basic to all sports and encourage a positive attitude toward active participation, health and physical fitness. Through teaching of body awareness and problem solving, Gleason’s engages the mind as well as the body in the learning process.
The fact the children naturally find gymnastics to be so much fun may be sufficient cause for some parents to have their child in a gym program but other parents may seek more justification for the expenditure of time and money. While few children become advanced gymnasts, all children will attend school and many will participate in some form of athletics. Educators tell people that children’s success in school and athletics is strongly influenced by earlier experiences that will help them to believe that they can solve problems and that they can have control over their lives. Very young children also benefit from successful social interaction, learning to interact with their peers, learning to be in a class, listening and following directions. Many different activities can have a positive effect on a child’s development. Among many things a child can be exposed to, gymnastics has some unique qualities. It is inherently satisfying. Children naturally receive great enjoyment in rolling, turning, jumping and swinging types of movements. They many different types of movement in gymnastics offers the trained teacher the chance to teach important physical concepts to the child. The various heights, speeds and complex movements involved provide natural situations where the child can learn to solve problems and overcome fears. In gymnastics, there are rules to learn and follow. Because gymnastics is so enjoyable to children, and they choose participate, they are strongly motivated to listen, to be part of the class. Gymnastics offers the teacher tremendous opportunity to teach listening and social skills. A good gymnastic program is structured around the above ideas. The sport of gymnastics can be used as a vehicle to enhance children’s adaptation to both academics and sports. It is important to learn the movement concepts involved in a skill as well as learning the skill. Most important, each child must experience a maximum of success and a minimum of failure. The focus should be on the development of self-esteem along with skill acquisition. Not all children can perform a given skill well, but they can all learn to feel good about what they can do. To ensure success it is important that the skills taught are challenging but realistically attainable. In very young children one year
