DFLers, Republicans to hold conventions March 17 BY TAD JOHNSON SUN NEWSPAPERS The new Senate District 57 will get its official start Saturday, March 17, when local Republicans and DFLers will meet for their conventions. Conventions are planned to start at 9:30 a.m. at Eastview High School for the Republicans and at Rosemount Middle School for the Democrats (registration starts at 8:30 a.m.). There will be plenty of familiar faces when the Basic Political Organizing Units are formed as leaders and delegates are elected and candidates are endorsed. But there will be some new people at the table, too. County juvenile crime down ninth straight year BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS According to the Dakota County Attorney’s Office, juvenile crimes rates have decreased for the ninth straight year. The office recently released its 2011 Dakota County juvenile prosecution statistics Feb. 14, 2012. The report indicated as highlights an 8-percent decrease in the total number of juvenile offenders charged with all levels of crime in the county and a slight decrease in felony-level crimes from 203 in 2010 to 192 in 2011. In the report, County Attorney James Backstrom said “these statistics do not reflect the total number of crimes involving juveniles occurring in Dakota County, but reflect the number of charges filed against juveniles within this jurisdiction.” By city, Apple Valley saw a decrease in the number of juveniles charged with all levels of crimes from 224 to 210, and Eagan also saw a decrease from 191 to 169. In Rosemount, this figure decreased from 75 to 62. Burnsville also experienced a decrease as the number went from 206 to 179, but Lakeville saw an increase from 129 to 153. He emphasized that most of the charges filed were for misdemeanor level offenses, dropping from 1,147 juveniles charged in 2010 to 1,072 in 2011, which is a decrease of nearly 7 percent. Juvenile prosecutions peaked in 2002 when 2,070 youths were charged with crimes. “It is a good sign that the number of youths charged with a crime in our community cont8inues to drop as the population estimate of our 10-17 year-olds increased by 3 percent over the past 10

years,” Backstrom said. Dakota County’s total population has grown on average about 1 percent each year over the last decade. It is currently home to around 400,000 residents. Despite the growing number of youths 10-17, “We have continued a downward trend,” Backstrom said. “We have a lot of positive things going on with kids in our community.” Backstrom said that the continued decrease is largely due to law enforcement and school involvement through various initiatives, along with county diversion programs. Backstrom said that last year of 1,334 prosecuted juvenile offenders, 1,023 were referred to alternative programs. Backstrom emphasized that they are still held accountable legally. According to Ruth Dunn, communications director for Burnsville-EaganSavage schools, the focus is being proactive. “Our schools work closely with the police departments of the cities they are in and form great working relationships with Burnsville, Eagan and Savage police departments that benefit students, families, school staff members and the community, as a whole,” Dunn said. Capt. Jon Rechtzigel, acting Apple Valley Chief of Police, said although it’s anecdotal, he believes the existence of police liaison officers has helped schools, but especially students who would not otherwise feel comfortable speaking with a police officer until they feel comfortable with them. “Michael Eliason was just named the juvenile officer of the year,” Rechtzigel said of one Apple Valley school liaison offi-

cer. Steve Degenaar, principal of Apple Valley High School, nominated Eliason Dec. 20, 2011. According to Rechtzigel, since the time that Eliason started, more than 30 students have gone on to become police officers, and five of those were school resource officers in Twin Cities schools. Since officer Eliason has began, over 30 have be come police officers, and at one point five of those students were school liaison officers in Twin Cities schools. “There is generally a greater awareness of the importance of bullying and harassment prevention and an improved understanding of what is acceptable behavior and what is not,” Dunn said. “Police set up an anonymous tip line for students to report any incidents. According to Backstrom, any person who has a positive mentoring relationship is making a difference in the lives of many youths, adding that a faith-based home life is an important aspect to any child’s upbringing. Burnsville Chief of Police Bob Hawkins said the department has three officers serving in Burnsville schools and stressed the importance of these positions. “We work very closely with the staff to

be part of those relationships,” he said. “The schools are very good about that.” Hawkins went on to say that the officers are part of a continuing message from elementary school through high school. “They are accepted and they are part of the team.” Hawkins added he felt the strongest school-related initiative was Blue in School, which is a program to help in developing relationships with students so they are comfortable speaking to police. He said such a relationship helps the officers when dealing with such an issue as bullying. According to Dunn, most BES District 1901 schools are implementing a program called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, “which describes itself as a decision making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students,” she said. Backstrom estimates that 20-30 percent of juvenile offenses occur in schools or on school property, an unsurprising statistic since that is where they spend a lot of their time during the school year, he said.

Lakeville woman part of effort to help families with Down syndrome children Group of Twin Cities mothers leading charge to raise up to $100,000 for GiGi’s Playhouse BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS A Lakeville woman has realized a mission through her 13-year-old son’s joy. Lakeville resident, and mother of a 13-year-old son with Down syndrome, Danyel Hinson is on a mission – to provide a better life for her son and all families with children dealing with Down syndrome. The mother of three children is part of a group of volunteers that is working to bring the first GiGi’s Playhouse to the Twin Cities metro. GiGi’s Playhouses are Down syndrome awareness and educational cen-

ters that provide resources, specialized teaching, and support to individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the community. Each is a nonprofit center run by volunteers. There are currently seven playhouses in the U.S. with more planned. D a n C a r p e n t e r, executive director of GiGi’s Playhouse, which is headquartered in Chicago, Ill., said the group of more than a dozen Twin Cities women are volunteers in the sense that they are not getting paid, but he indicated that the national office does offer direction as well as support to those in this situation. “Playhouses usually start when community groups reach out to us,” Carpenter said. “This was them deciding that they wanted to start a playhouse. okay.’” According to Danyel, Shaun fell head over heels in love with his son at that moment – and that she knew the fatherand-son bond was not broken. In a very short period of time, Danyel came to realize something very special about her son, “He was the one thing I never knew I needed,” Danyel said. Danyel first learned of GiGi’s through an online search for a form of help – as well as hope – for her son to reach his full potential. She came across GiGi’s and soon after the family drove four hours from Iowa, where they were living around 2004, to Chicago for the sole purpose of visiting the playhouse. During their visit, Anthony began to exhibit some behaviors uncommon to his parents. “Anthony had been afraid of aniGIGIS: TO PAGE 10

basis so they are using the procedures and systems we have set up.” Reaching out to GiGi’s was precisely what Hinson did in an effort to find help for her son, an effort that began almost as early as when she and her husband, Shaun, gave birth to Anthony, who just started attending Century Middle School in Lakeville. It was at this time that Danyel said that she and Shaun were not exactly prepared for the news. “We found out when he was born,” Danyel said. “I was a wreck. I cried for two days.” Danyel added that Anthony was born four months premature and spent a fair amount of time in the neo-natal intensive care unit. “When Shaun was in there, Anthony started to cry,” Danyel recalled. “My husband touched his arm and said, ‘It’s

Once the brothers turned 18, they joined the department, and Joel continues serving the community of Apple Valley since. According to Dan, the fact he had an “in” at the department, which allowed him to visit and see his father on the job, as well as seeing the trucks and other gear that grab the attention of most young boys. “I think it was just watching my dad,” Dan said of what initially attracted him to the fire department. “It looked like something that was fun.” Dan’s wife, Barb, served as a member of the Apple Valley Fire Department Auxiliary for many years before the organization disbanded many years ago. “We have been involved,” Barb said of all of family. “We really like it and we’re going to miss it.” Barb added that she has spent a fair amount of time serving as the department’s seamstress, making bags and other items. Dan’s son, David, also enjoyed success as a firefighter for Apple Valley. This was until his full-time career took him from Apple Valley and delivered him to western Minnesota, where he serves this community as a police officer. “He’d still be on the department if he didn’t have to move,” Dan said of hit son’s dedication to serving. “He is a police officer in Marshall, Minn.” Dan quipped about trying to convince David to become a firefighter. “I could not convince him to become a firefighter,” Dan said. “David wanted become a police officer. He does miss [firefighting], but his first calling was the police.” “The Engel’s are a family truly devoted to serving the community they live and work in,” Thompson said. Engel commented on the changes that

he’s seen 34 years and six months of service, mostly about the turnout gear that the firefighters wear. He said back when he started until the mid to late 1980s. According to Dan, back then gear consisted mainly of rubber hip boots, gloves, boots and a helmet, as well as a three-quarter length rubber coat. “By the time you got to the location, you were too cold to do anything,” he quipped. He jokingly added this gear was best at repelling water, but not so much the elements. Today, firefight- Dan Engel ers in just all communities in the country are wearing stateof-the-art gear. “The stuff today is made out of Nomex, and that’s basically bunker pants, bunker coat, and a hood that goes over year ears,” Dan said, adding their masks are now pressurized as to not allow smoke inside. “It’s quite a change from when I first started. “In addition to the leadership and training that Dan has provided to firefighters through the years,” Thompson said, “…he has also been fully committed to the volunteer opportunities the fire department brings to the community.” From public fire safety education events, to fire prevention week in the elementary schools, he and Barb have also dedicated many hours to the Apple Valley Firefighters Relief Association, serving as co-chairs for the annual Booya fundraiser event held every September, and Dan currently serves as the head cook. According to Dan, this is especially on area of volunteer service he greatly enjoyed as he recalled on particular evening during National Night Out when he and other AVFD members made a simple, quick stop at a lemonade stand being run by two young children. “That is probably something they’ll always remember,” Dan said.

As I sat at her semicircular glass desk, surrounded by statues and crystals, she told me about her painting work and other subjects, about the ghosts in her house, one of which swears she flipped open

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Supports Warlow’s legislation to curb lawsuit abuse To the editor: I thought it was ironic that a letter published on Feb. 23 brought up “special interests” when referring to Rep. Doug Wardlow’s legislation curbing lawsuit abuse (“Against

Wardlow” Feb. 23). The only special interests involved in this story are the trial lawyers who persuaded Gov. Mark Dayton to veto these common sense reforms because they would take money out of their pockets. Lawsuit abuse is bad for business, and Minnesota is at a competitive disadvantage when compared to other states in the Midwest.

Warlow’s bills would have lowered premiums for insurance customers, lowered prices for consumers and made it easier for business to survive in Minnesota and grow jobs. People with legitimate claims would not only have their day in court but also see it happen sooner. Unfortunately with the veto of Wardlow’s bill the court system will continue to be clogged up with other suits lack-

ing merit. Since I’ve worked for a business, purchased insurance and bought groceries and other goods, I’m glad Wardlow is looking out for my interests instead of a powerful lobbying group in St. Paul. Let’s hope the DFL and Dayton stop standing in the way of these common sense reforms. Allen Evans Eagan

The changes haven’t created the kind of buzz that other redraw lines have caused, such as in Lakeville where a vacancy was created and other districts in the state that are now home to two sitting legislators. “I am glad that Apple Valley and Rosemount were not negatively impacted by redistricting,” state Rep. Kurt Bills, RRosemount, said. “The communities have stayed together in senate district configuration and this will mean only minor adaptations for citizens to make at the House level.” One of those adaptations will be adding a portion of Lakeville and Coates that generally have the same socioeconomic composition of the rest of the district. Jeff Wilfahrt has been an outspoken advocate for gay rights since his son, Spc. Andrew Wilfahrt, died. Friends, co-workers remember Andy Hamre Hamre was ECM-Sun Printing employee

PEGGY BAKKEN

Andrew Hamre is being remembered this week as a man who loved fishing, his family and his friends. Hamre, 49, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, while at work at the ECM-Sun Printing facility in Hudson, Wis., from a massive heart attack. He leaves behind a wife, two sons, many friends and his co-workers – all who will miss him very much. During an afternoon break, Andy suffered a heart attack. Coworkers attempted CPR and called emergency crews, but he died a short time later. “As always, our teams pulled together but this time in an attempt to save Andy’s life,” print plant employee Maria Beaupre said. “Despite all our efforts, Andy passed away.” His friends and family quickly mention “fishing” when asked what he liked doing the most in his free time. Andy was an avid fishermen, and had won several trophies for his catches. Annette said that Andy loved the New Richmond area for its great fishing, with Mary Park Lake being a favorite spot. “They’d catch bass, crappies, perch and sunnies there all the time,” Annette said. His main fishing buddy was son, Josh, age 14. “They’d compete against each other in their own bass tournaments,” Annette said. Last year, Josh won the contests. “He kicked his dad’s butt,” Annette remembered. His co-workers at Sun Printing also knew how much he loved to fish. He and his son fished as often as they could,

one co-worker remembered. He also loved sports, and supported his son who played in a local baseball league every season. “Andy was a dedicated, hard-working and reliable employee who would stay to the end when things went wrong. When things got tough, Andy got tougher. He will be missed by many, as will his singing throughout the plant each afternoon once the deadlines had been met,” Cody Griffin, print plant manager, said. Annette said Andy enjoyed his work and his co-workers at Sun Printing, where he’d been employed for five years. The work team was like family, she said. There would be occasional disagreements, “but at the end of the day, it was all good,” she said. Andy grew up in northwest Minneapolis, and attended Edison High School. He worked in shipping and receiving, and he and Annette also operated a home daycare business there. They moved to Wisconsin after deciding it was time to get out of the city, and took the family to New Richmond. Their eldest son, Jonathan, 21, is a college student in Beloit, Wis. Annette Hamre said she was grateful for the friendship and support she has received from Andy’s co-workers and friends. “I just want to thank everyone for their help and for their prayers,” she said.

Gigis FROM PAGE 4 mals,” she said, but that day, he wanted to ride one of the ponies that were at GiGi’s in Chicago during a celebration at the Windy City site. “There was just such an aura of excitement and joy,” she said, adding that Anthony’s loss of his fear of animals was quite surprising. Time passed, but as of a few months ago, Danyel’s wish to find a place where her son can feel comfortable, have friends, and receive the encouragement with regard to developing his social skills, began to materialize. A GiGi’s Playhouse representative called CMS school to inquire about incorporating activity ideas at the school.

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

A quick response by Danyel put her in near immediate contact with a few other mothers in the Twin Cities. One of those women included Minneapolis resident Chris Ackerman. The two first connected a week after Christmas 2011. Ackerman commented on the progress that they have made so far with regard to their effort to bring hope to many families in metropolitan area. “Amy and I were connected through a mutual friend in June and met in September,” she said, adding that about a month later the two were able to get a group of women together to get a GiGi’s and then eventually determined who would be the people serving on the initial board. “From there, it has been crazy.” Ackerman referred to Amy Jackson, who is a resident of Edina and another person involved in their collective effort to bring a GiGi’s to the Twin Cities.

“We have a board of eight members,” Chris said. She added that they have an executive committee that consists of board members and five other moms in the Twin Cities. Their goal is to raise $60,000 to $100,000 to get a GiGi’s in the metro by January 2013. She has been to GiGi’s in Des Moines, Iowa, and Harlem, N.Y., and remains surprised that there is not yet one in the Twin Cities. But these two experiences solidified her convictions to help get one for Twin Cities families. “When we were in Des Moines, it was open,” Ackerman said, adding that they were able to see the playhouse and other children with Down syndrome. “It was an emotional experience.” After seeing GiGi’s in Des Moines, Iowa, Ackerman knew it could be done in Minnesota. “We can do this,” she said. “Des

Moines, Iowa, has three. We have more people here. It’s really amazing we don’t have one yet.” According to Danyel, should the group be able to raise the needed funds to open a GiGi’s in the Twin Cities, she would be the volunteer coordinator, and will be helping to staff it. She said they will be looking at sites this month, one in St. Louis Park in particular, and plan to have all completed by January 2013. The committed families dedicated to brining a GiGi’s Playhouse to the land of 10,000 lakes began fundraising Feb. 25 at Pinstripes, a restaurant in Edina. The next, according to Danyel, is a scheduled 5K run to take place in May this year. But in order to do this, the group still needs much more help. “We need volunteers and donations,” she said. “I want this for my son and every other new mother and family that comes after us.” Info: twincities@gigisplayhouse.org.

Wig FROM PAGE 6 middle of my palm, is plenty long, traveling all the way across my thumb. “You might even crack 100,” she told me. But there’s a reason for that. Turns out, I’m a healer. Something about my pinky says so, and it is something the world needs. And it doesn’t mean I necessarily have to become a brain surgeon or anything, Sheila told me; I can just heal by touch if I want. Mere proximity works, too. If people don’t want me to touch them (understandable) I can just hover near them. In fact, I don’t even have to be near them, said Sheila’s associate, Scott Anderson, who is also supposed to be psychic and would later give me a tarot card reading. Scott said I could use vocal vibrations to heal because of the “nice, mellow voice type thing” I’ve got going on. Well, all right then. And I could have the chance to heal people all over the world, because in my 40s, Sheila said, I will travel extensively, possibly as a National Geographic type. There is another line branching off of my freakishly long lifeline that tells her that. All of this comes just from those two

creases and my pinky; I’ve got four fingers and plenty of palm left for more fantastic news. “You’ve got the inventor’s knob,” Sheila gasped, “and it’s gigantic.” You see, we have mainstream thinkers, she told me as I fought a wide grin and resisted nodding, “and we have you. So you do not think like most people. You probably already know that.” I don’t argue with her and besides, it takes all kinds, right? Scott then puts his weight into this ego massage as he refers to our earlier interview. “I don’t think that there was a thing that we brought up or threw at you that you didn’t on some level get, or relate to, or at least tie-in …” he keenly observed, adding praise for my refusal to balk at the ghost stories. Sheila didn’t say anything about my palm saying I am open-minded, but I’ll take that one, too, thank you very much. That ridiculous inventor’s knob is on the lower left side of my right hand, straight down from my healing pinky. Across the base of my hand is a strong verbal knob, pointing to my ability to convince and persuade others, which is why I was such a good janitorial supply salesman back in the day. I wasn’t, actually, but I’ll roll with it, especially the thing about me investing a lot of passion in what I do and digging

beneath the surface. Sheila also dropped the “magnetic personality” bomb. Again, rolling. Up from that verbal hotspot, at the base of my ring finger, is a “full-fledged Mount of Apollo.” Of course, this is a good thing. Mount of Apollo is the arts and entertainment sector of the palm, and since mine is full-fledged, I pretty much rock at things like computer graphics, cartoons and other design work (Sheila said). Hoping the answer to the question would lend legitimacy to the righteously emboldening analysis, I asked, “Surely, some palms must give negative readings?” They told me they try to tip-toe and soften the blow in these cases and mentioned one time when they told a client a transatlantic flight would not go well, and it didn’t — there were like seven things that went bad during the flight, which landed safely. Since I didn’t want to ruin a good thing, I did not ask about my middle and index fingers and thumb, and the countless other wrinkles on my palm that did not elicit comment. In fact, the reading was not 100 percent positive, anyway. I have a dent in my heart line, signifying past heartbreak, but which one? I’m supposed to bounce back,

though, thanks to a solid marriage line: soul mate, lifelong partnership, four kids. Sheila told me it would begin in my early 30s. I’m 29. (Window closing, ladies:) I don’t know anything about palm reading beyond this visit and I don’t know if Sheila and Scott are really psychics, because I’m not a psychic. They didn’t offer any observations where I was like, “How did you know that?” Scott did, however, make a hypothetical off-hand remark during our tarot card reading about an August wedding for my brother, who is actually getting married in May, so that was pretty good. I don’t know if the comment was some sort of psychic insight; he didn’t try to play it that way. I do know that Sheila and Scott seem like nice people, that Sheila charges $150 an hour for her services — which can be broken down to the quarter-hour — and that they both made me feel really good. I think seeing a psychic is like anything: We believe what we want to believe. And when the message is this good, why not buy it? Sheila asked if I would include her number: 612-866-1269. Her website is sheilaknows.com. Scott is at 612-8652437 and holymanonline.com.

EDUCATION Paideia Academy raises more than $1,000 for charity in two weeks Paideia Academy’s Leadership team created a series of activities that raised more than $2,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society including a penny war, pajama day and stuck for a buck involving both students and teachers in a two-week fundraising blitz that began Monday, Jan. 23, through Thursday, Feb. 16. The funds they raised benefit the LLS’s Pennies for Patients program. The school’s leadership team, consisting of both middle school students and their advisor and teacher, Anne Simon, put together

activities to get the entire K-8 school involved. The team was in charge of organizing each type of fundraiser, implementing the events by themselves and updating the students and their families at weekly Monday morning meetings about their progress. The most successful event was Stuck for a Buck where students paid $1 per colored strip of duct tape that they used to tape one of their favorite teachers, gym teacher Ms. Daugherty, to the wall. “The students had a great time raising money for this fantastic cause,” said Anne Simon, leadership advisor at Paideia Academy. The Leadership team was successful in not only incorporating some fun activities into a learning activity while raising funds for LLS, but they also managed to learn how “fun” fundraising can be for everyone involved.

Paideia Academy teacher Mindy Daugherty allowed herself to be taped to a wall as part of a two-week fundraiser Jan. 30 through Feb. 10. Students paid $1 per colored strip of duct tape in the “Stuck for a Buck” event, said to be the most successful during the two weeks.

Guilty plea entered in Apple Valley arson Aaron Ferrarese used soda can filled with gasoline to set house fire BY ANDREW MILLER – SUN NEWSPAPERS The man accused of setting fire to an Apple Valley home last August pleaded guilty Wednesday to arson. Aaron M. Ferrarese, 21, was acting on a grudge with the college-age son of the home’s owners when he used a soda can full of gasoline to light a fire on the porch, according to the criminal complaint. The Aug. 26 fire saw flames engulf the front of the two-story house on the 14300 block of Fridley Way. Neither the intended victim nor his parents were home, though the residence was occupied at the time of the fire by the victim’s grandparents – including former Minnesota Vikings running back Dave Osborn – and four girls they were babysitting. Emergency personnel arrived at the

home within minutes of the fire being reported just before 1:30 a.m. The occupants said they awoke to a crackling noise and discovered that the exterior of the home near the front door was ablaze. They quickly evacuated and dialed 911. During their investigation, police learned that Ferrarese had a grudge against the homeowners’ son and had threatened to burn the house down, the complaint said. Ferrarese, of Apple Valley, told police he felt the young man whose parents’ house he targeted “got away with everything” and that he wanted him to “feel some pain,” the complaint said. He stated he did not know if anyone was in the house when he set the fire and did not check to find out. Ferrarese remained in custody at the Dakota County Jail as of Friday afternoon. Sentencing is scheduled for March 21 in Dakota County District Court. Andrew Miller is andrew.miller@ecm-inc.com.

Finding support where there was none Students suffering from concussions have a place to meet with others BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS Matt Hovila distinctly remembers his last basketball game at Bloomington Jefferson High School. Unlike most seniors, his last game didn’t end with a playoff loss or an improbable state tournament victory, it ended with a conference victory against Rosemount. And it was the first conference game of the season. There was little indication in the final minutes of the game that Hovila’s playing days were over. He had aspirations of playing collegiate basketball, but those went by the wayside following the victory. Hovila suffered a concussion during that Rosemount victory last season. Instead of spending this winter on a basketball court at an outstate school, Hovila is studying applied economics at the University of Minnesota. And he’s reaching out to those who are traveling the same path he has since fourth grade, stu-

dents affected by concussions. Hovila is the co-founder of Connections4Concussions, a support group for students who are coping with the effects of a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. At 19, Hovila is an elder statesman for the newly formed support group, which held its first meeting last week at Penn Lake Library in Bloomington. “It’s good to be with people who know the same struggles, and don’t judge you for it,” he said. Hovila wants students from across the Twin Cities and beyond to know that they’re not the only one suffering from the lingering effects of a concussion, a feeling he knows well in the years since his first concussion, suffered while playing football as a fourth-grader. What Hovila and his family didn’t know all those years ago was that his first concussion would be just one of many. He suffered two concussions within a onemonth period during that fourth-grade football season. The first wasn’t significant, according to Hovila, but the second one turned out to be life changing, even though it wasn’t as hard of a hit. “The effects of it were more serious because of the first hit,” he said.

The second concussion had lasting effects. He had bouts with fatigue and memory loss, struggled in school, became short-tempered and was prone to outbursts, all uncharacteristic for him prior to fourth grade, he explained. Hovila’s life returned to normal in fifth grade, but concussions became a part of his life as a basketball player, starting with a concussion in sixth grade. Headaches following that concussion occasionally forced Hovila to go home early from school. After each concussion Hovila would be diagnosed by a doctor and cleared to resume activity before returning to basketball. “We did everything we were supposed to at the time,” he said. But by his sophomore year in high school the family decided that the recurring cycle should end. Hovila and his parent agreed that the next concussion would be his last as a basketball player. Hovila was 90 seconds from extending his basketball career beyond the opening game of the conference schedule. An elbow to the head during a scrum for a rebound off of a missed free throw was the final blow, although Hovila didn’t know it at the time. He remembers the

Beyond basketball “I’m still dealing with a lot of the symptoms,” Hovila said. Years of experience have helped Hovila learn how to manage and cope with the effects of his concussions, but he grew up without a peer group to share his experiences with. Classmates suffered concussions, too, but none of them experienced the recurring effects of them as Hovila did. Hovila has had an outlet for support, however, the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota. Concussions FROM PREVIOUS PAGE December 2009. While attending a Minnesota Wild game last October as guests of the Brain Injury Association, Hovila and Meyer discussed starting a peer support group. The idea was suggested in jest, but the duo realized they could fulfill a need by organizing the group, and proceeded to do so. Connections4Concussions is intended to provide youth and young adults who have suffered concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries with opportunities

to learn from each other, and find encouragement and support. Their group will also provide caregivers, family members and friends opportunities to discuss their challenges in a separate setting. The inaugural meeting attracted 10 students, with the Hovila and Meyer families discussing their experiences and the need for the support group. The group will meet at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month at Penn Lake Library, 8800 Penn Ave. S. The March 27 meeting will include two speakers from the Brain Injury Association. MVTA salutes Drivers of the Year, project manager The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority presented its 2011 Driver of the Year awards at a recent recognition dinner. In presenting the awards, MVTA board chair and Eagan city councilmember Gary Hansen commented on the importance of MVTA drivers. “Our drivers are the ears, eyes and face of the MVTA. The driver’s ‘office’ is their bus, which they use to safely transport 5-65 riders to destinations throughout the MVTA’s cities and the region,” he said. “They are well-trained

and take pride in their work.” The 2011 Driver of the Year recipients were Denny Unze, Schmitty and Sons Transit full-time Driver; and Gary Thompson, Schmitty and Sons parttime Driver. In addition, a special award was presented to Project Manager Connie Massengale, who is considered the “driving force” behind the Schmitty and Sons “can-do” attitude, Hansen said. Unze has been an MVTA driver for more than four years. He currently serves as sub driver on all MVTA routes. Thompson attended truck-driving school at Dakota County Technical College and had experience driving a truck full of anhydrous ammonia for Midland Coop. He has been driving bus for MVTA for five years, four of them with Schmitty and Sons. Criteria in qualifying as a Driver of the Year include the following: the driver must have received one or more customer comments commending superior driving or customer service, the driver must have been recognized at a monthly meeting during the past year, the driver must have an excellent safety and attendance record, and the driver must be recognized by his or her peers as a leader. The award consists of a plaque, an MVTA personalized jacket and hat, and an MVTA scarf. The runners-up this year were Fesseha Mekonnen of Burnsville with second-place and Suzanne Holm of Apple Valley ending up with third-place. A special award was also presented to Connie Massengale, project manager for Schmitty and Sons. Her background includes 20 years with Schmitty and Sons – 14 with MVTA and a total of 24 years in the industry.

Eighth-grader ready to help Eagles extend dominance

Eagan makes quick work of Section 3AA Wildcats return to state boys hockey tournament

Hall finishes season undefeated; Kingsley wins 4th championship

BY ANDY ROGERS – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Apple Valley senior Brandon Kingsley closed his high school career in style, becoming the fourth Eagles wrestler to win at least four state individual championships. The University of Minnesota recruit (45-1) defeated Eastview’s Mitch Rechtzigel 6-3 in the Class 3A 160-pound final. It was a rematch of the Section 3 championship match, which Kingsley won 6-4. Kingsley was first at 140 pounds in the last two state tournaments and won the state title at 125 as a ninth-grader. His record over the last four years was 188-4.

The Eagan boys hockey team will make its second straight trip to the Class AA state tournament next week after winning the Section 3AA final March 1 at the Coliseum at the Minnesota Fairgrounds in St. Paul. The section final had a much different result than those of the past two years. In 2010 and 2011, the Wildcats played two tight games against Apple Valley that weren’t decided until overtime or late in the third period. This time around the outcome seemed decided by the end of the first period. It was running time in by the third period as Eagan defeated Hastings 10-1. The Wildcats made quick work of the Section 3AA field outscoring teams 29-2 in three games. “I think we’re playing our best hockey of the season,” senior captain Michael Zajac said. “Everyone from the goalie to our fourth line are playing great.” Eagan head coach Mike Taylor admitted that if there’s a negative to take from the section tournament, it’s the fact that the blowouts allowed the players to play without their usual intensity. “We’ll go back at it tomorrow,” Taylor said. “They better forget about it … The team we’re going to see next Thursday, they’re going to be fast and physical. We’ll try to replicate that in some practices. It might take a little adjustment. I’m not going to kid myself.” The players understood that this was just the next step in order to reach their long-term goal. “Tonight we took care of business quite handily,” Zajac said. “I don’t think we’re going to be playing running time

BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS No one can accuse Mark Hall of setting his sights too low. An eighth-grader and already a twotime state high school champion, Hall said one of his long-term goals is to be the best wrestler Apple Valley has ever had. Considering that the national powerhouse Eagles have had a five-time state champion and three four-time state champs, it’s a lot to ask. And Hall knows it. But there’s no denying he’s off to a good start. In addition to his back-toback state championships, he is 85-3 at Apple Valley and has not lost to a Minnesota wrestler. On March 3 at Xcel Energy Center, Hall pinned Stillwater senior Branden Madsen in 3 minutes, 38 seconds in the Class 3A championship match at 152 pounds. Hall, 39-0, was one of two Class 3A wrestlers to finish the season undefeated. Hall arrived in Apple Valley in November 2010, having moved from Michigan and already possessing a lengthy resume of youth wrestling accomplishments. It wasn’t long before the Eagles tested him, having Hall wrestle Destin McCauley in practice. McCauley graduated in 2011 as a five-time state champion and holds state records for victories and falls. He’s also the benchmark Hall is trying to pass. “I want to be the best that’s ever gone through here,” Hall said, “so that means I’m looking at Destin McCauley. That’s the main reason I want to keep going out there and work hard.” Seventh- and eighth-graders are not

Apple Valley eighth-grader Mark Hall has his hand raised after winning his second state individual championship. He also helped the Eagles win their 20th state team wrestling championship. (Photo by Rick Orndorf – Sun Newspapers) allowed to wrestle on high school varsity teams in Michigan, which is one reason the Hall family moved to Minnesota. Another reason is that Hall and his father (also named Mark) knew the quality of wrestlers in the Apple Valley room would force him to improve or be left behind. “[Teammates] Brandon Kingsley, Ben Sullivan and Daniel Woiwor beat the crap out of me every single day,” Hall said. “That’s what Apple Valley has done for me. And that’s what my dad wanted. He doesn’t want me coming back home and telling my sisters, ‘I’m the greatest in the world.’” Hall, who won the 130-pound Class 3A championship as a seventh-grader, had little trouble winning the 145pound title this year. He pinned two of his four state opponents and won the other two matches 19-7 and 11-2. He said he enjoys the strategic elements of wrestling. “Every wrestler has what I call a secret move, something that they do really well,” he said. “I knew [Madsen] had a headlock, and I needed to stay out of that. Even if it’s a guy I ended up pinning, he probably had something that made him dangerous.” With Class 3A individual championships in his first two years with the

Eagles, Hall becomes the next to think about scaling the Mount Olympus of Minnesota prep wrestling – six state titles. No one has done that. Four wrestlers have won five championships, the most recent of which was McCauley. Hall makes no secret of the fact he wants to make history. But … “I’m trying not to get too far ahead of myself,” he said. “I can only win my third state title next year, not my sixth.”

Second doesn’t sit as well with Irish’s Jackson Air Force Academy-bound senior finishes his season 41-4 BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Losing to a friend eased the sting for Adam Jackson – but only a little. The Rosemount senior reached the championship round of the state wrestling tournament for the second consecutive year. Twelve months ago he was matched up against Apple Valley’s Destin McCauley, perhaps the best high school wrestler the state has ever produced. On March 3 the opponent was Tartan’s T.J. O’Hara, only a sophomore but already a four-time state qualifier. And he was someone Jackson knew well. “In the off-season, we practice together at Pinnacle Wrestling School,” Jackson said. “He’s a pretty good friend of mine.” O’Hara won 6-1 in the Class 3A 152pound final at Xcel Energy Center. The match turned late in the second period. O’Hara held a 1-0 lead after scoring an escape earlier in the period. Later, with both wrestlers scrambling for an advantage, Jackson suddenly found himself on his back. By the time he could get out of that predicament, O’Hara had scored five more points. “When you get in that scramble posi-

tion, sometimes it works out for you, but sometimes it doesn’t,” Rosemount coach Brett Larson said. “It was a five-point move. It’s hard to come back in the state tournament if you give up five points.” Jackson (41-4) was a state runner-up for the second consecutive year. Last year he was OK with second place. This year he wanted more. “Last year I was going against Destin McCauley, and I knew that would be a tough match to win,” Jackson said. “This year my attitude was I was going to go out and win the state championship.” Jackson and O’Hara entered the tournament ranked second and fourth in Class 3A at 152. O’Hara defeated No. 1-ranked Mason Manville of Apple Valley 6-4 in the semifinals. Jackson beat Cody Skog of CambridgeIsanti 5-3 in the first round, Ben Cousins of Bloomington Kennedy 3-1 in the quarterfinals and Nam Nguyen of St. Cloud Apollo 5-2 in the semifinals. Jackson doesn’t have much time to stew over not winning the state championship. Within weeks of his high school graduation he will start the next phase of his life as a prospective Air Force officer. Jackson received a nomination to the Air Force Academy in January. Some future cadets attend a prep school first but Jackson, who has a 4.0 grade-point average, will go directly to the academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. He reports for

basic training this summer. “I started thinking about serving my country, and I went to a leadership seminar at West Point [the U.S. Military Academy],” he said. “After 11th grade, the Air Force coaches started showing interest in me. I went down there on a visit and got along with all the wrestlers. “I wanted to go somewhere that had rigorous academics. Wrestling is huge, but finding the best academic school is even more important.” Asked if he’s thought about what field to pursue, Jackson said, “I have, but it changes. I’m looking at being some sort of sports medicine physician or a mechanical engineer.” There’s a Minnesota connection to the Air Force wrestling program. Joel Sharratt, a two-time state high school champion at Bloomington Kennedy, is the Falcons’ head coach. Jackson was one of five Rosemount wrestlers to qualify for state and one of two to medal. The other medalist was senior Steve Levine (41-6), who finished fifth at 126 pounds. Levine won his first two matches before losing to Mitch Bengtson of St. Cloud Apollo in the semifinals. That was Bengtson’s 179th consecutive victory, but the state-record winning streak ended when Eden Prairie’s Sam Brancale defeated Bengtson 2-1 in the championship match.

Rosemount senior Adam Jackson works on an opponent at the state Class 3A wrestling tournament. He finished second at 152 pounds for the second consecutive year. (Photo by Rick Orndorf – Sun Newspapers) Larson said getting to state was big for Levine, who missed the section tournament the last two years because of injuries. Rosemount junior Dan Rosa (34-11) went 1-2 at state at 113 after running into eventual champion Tommy Thorn of St. Michael-Albertville in the first round. Sam Moller (32-13) was 1-2 at 170 pounds. Stefan Sauer (31-15) went 2-2 at heavyweight. Sauer also ran into the eventual state champion, losing to Albert Lea’s Bryce DeBoer in the quarterfinals.

Three ranked teams in running for Section 3 title Boys basketball playoffs start this week BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Three teams ranked in the top 10 in Class 4A are part of the Section 3 boys basketball playoffs that started this week. Eastview, ranked No. 3 in the state, is the section’s top seed. Fifth-seeded Apple Valley received the No. 2 seed and 10th-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall is seeded third. Five of the eight teams in the section have winning records. “It’s a good section, and we’re excited to go into the playoffs,” Apple Valley coach Zach Goring said last weekend. “It’s going to be difficult. East Ridge [Apple Valley’s first-round opponent] has a good team, and if we get by them,

Cretin-Derham Hall or Rosemount will be a challenge in the semifinals. “Eastview is Eastview. They’re a heck of a team. Eagan and [Henry] Sibley are good clubs, too.” Quarterfinal games were played March 7, after this edition went to press. Eastview (25-1) played host to eighthseeded Park of Cottage Grove (2-24), with the winner advancing to the semifinals Saturday, March 10, at Burnsville High School. Eagan and Sibley, both 14-12, played March 7 at Eagan for the right to play Eastview or Park in the semifinals. The other half of the bracket had Apple Valley (21-5) playing at home against East Ridge (9-17), and Rosemount (11-15) traveling to CretinDerham Hall (18-8). The Section 3 championship game is 7 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Burnsville High. Eastview goes in as the favorite. The

Lightning’s only loss was to Lakeville North, with which it shared the South Suburban Conference championship. Lakeville North is the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A, Section 1 playoffs. Senior forward Joey King, a candidate for the Mr. Basketball award, leads Eastview with a 23.9 scoring average. The Lightning has two other players averaging at least 11 a game – senior guard Darin Haugh (12.4) and junior forward Ben Oberfeld (11.3). All five of Apple Valley’s losses were to ranked teams – two each to Eastview and Lakeville North, and one to Eden Prairie. The Eagles are, however, back to full strength with the return of junior guard Harry Sonie, who missed 11 games because of an intestinal ailment that required surgery. He averaged 11.5 points in the 15 regular-season games he did play. Sophomore guard Tyus Jones led the

South Suburban Conference in scoring with a 28.7 average. Junior guard Dustin Fronk averages almost 16 points. “We’re going to be able to score with anyone,” Goring said. “If teams want to run with us, we’ll be in good shape. “What we have to do in the playoffs is defend a little better and stay out of foul trouble. In our games against [Lakeville] North and Eastview, we put them in the bonus early in the second half, and they both shoot free throws really well.” Guard Nick Sabatke (16.7 points per game) and center Shea Mandli (16.2) are Eagan’s scoring leaders. Senior forward Matt Nelson leads Rosemount with a 16.6 average. Lakeville South won last year’s Section 3 championship, but the Cougars have since moved to Section 2, along with Burnsville. Burnsville (1-25) played at Eden Prairie on March 7 in the first round of the Section 2 playoffs.

2 FREE TICKETS to Million Dollar Quartet Million Dollar Quartet is the smash hit Broadway musical, inspired by the true story of the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. On December 4, 1956, these four young musicians were gathered together by Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions of all time.

One other Class 3A championship match was a rematch of a Section 3 final. Apple Valley’s Seth Gross edged Burnsville’s Andy Underhill 5-4 at 120 pounds. When they met in the section final a week earlier, Gross pinned Underhill. Last weekend, Underhill took a 4-1 lead in the second period before Gross rallied to win. Gross defeated Cole Sladek of St. Michael-Albertville 3-0 in the semifinals. Two days earlier, Sladek defeated Gross 5-3 during the Class 3A team final. Gross, who finished third at 103 in last year’s state tourney, was 43-3 this year. Apple Valley ninth-grader Maolu Woiwor (41-6) defeated Trevor Westerlund of Albert Lea 8-6 in the 106pound championship match for his first state title. Apple Valley now has won 75 state individual championships, 25 more than any other school. Also reaching a championship match for Apple Valley was ninth-grader Dayton Racer, who lost 6-4 to St. Cloud Apollo’s Grant Nehring in the 138-pound final. Racer was 38-5 this season. Thirteen Eagles competed in the Class 3A individual tournament. Also placing were Shamar Williams (fourth at 126), Dakota Trom (third at 132), Mason Manville (third at 152), Ben Sullivan (third at 170) and Daniel Woiwor (sixth at 182). Trom, a three-time state champion, lost 7-2 to Forest Lake’s Ben Morgan in the quarterfinals at 132. Morgan went on to win the championship. The match between the No. 1

(Morgan) and No. 2 (Trom) ranked competitors in the weight class prompted some to call for seeding the state individual tournament so matches between highly ranked wrestlers couldn’t happen in the early rounds.

20th team championship There were no surprises in the Class 3A team tournament as Apple Valley routed three opponents March 1 to win its 20th state championship. The Eagles defeated St. MichaelAlbertville in the championship match for the second consecutive year. The title was Apple Valley’s seventh in a row and 13th in the last 14 years. Apple Valley trailed just once during the team tournament. St. MichaelAlbertville led by three points after three matches in the final. But Apple Valley won the next eight bouts to take a 40-point lead. The Eagles eventually won 49-24. Williams, Trom, Racer, Hall, Manville, Kingsley, Sullivan and Daniel Woiwor were winners in the eight-match streak. Five of the victories in the streak were by fall and two were by technical fall. Apple Valley (29-1) defeated Willmar 58-12 in the quarterfinals and Prior Lake 62-3 in the semifinals. The Eagles’ only loss this season was 32-22 to St. Edward of Ohio at the Clash Duals. St. Edward is ranked second nationally and Apple Valley is third. No Minnesota team came close to beating the Eagles. After losing to St. Edward, Hall said an Eagles assistant coach told the wrestlers, “we’re not going to be the best team in the nation, but we will be the most prepared team in the nation. “We had to deal with some injuries, but it was unbelievable how prepared we were for the state tournament.”

at the state tournament. We’ll just bring our lunch pail to practice tomorrow and get back to work.” Season scoring leader Zajac was held scoreless, but that didn’t matter for the deep Wildcats as nine different players scored in the route over Hastings. Tommy Nowariak, Cody Mason, Derick Kuchera, Nick Kuchera, Eric Peterson, Cullen Willox, Will Merchant, and Zach Glienke all scored goals while Will Peterson had two. Tommy Muck had three assists, and Sam Wolfe and Nick Smallidge each had two. Eagan will participate in the Class

AA state tournament March 8 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Last season the team qualified for state defeating Moorhead in the first round, but losing to the eventual state champion Eden Prairie in the semifinal. The boys turned around to defeat Edina to take third. “It’ll be tough,” Taylor said. “You’ve got to win three to win it – against three really good teams. I would hope they understand that it takes three good performances, not just one big day to win it.” If they have an advantage, the Wildcats figure to be relatively healthy. Defenseman Connor McGovern sat out the section final with an ankle injury with hopes of being full strength by state.
