Rosemount woman to run a marathon in 50 states before 50th birthday Runner ran first full-length face in 2006 at Twin Cities Marathon BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS For many people, the thought of running a marathon induces crippling fear. One Rosemount woman not only enjoys running marathons, but wants to run them in as many places as she can. Diane Ciardelli is three marathons away from completing her goal of running a marathon in all 50 U.S. states before her 50th birthday on April 6, 2012. Remarkably, she only began running shortly after she turned 40 and ran her first marathon less than five years ago in 2006. Diane Ciardelli began running when she turned 40 to lose excess weight and to be increasingly active as she entered middle age, she said. She ran her first event the following summer, a fourmile race in Rosemount. She enjoyed the experience, but never thought she could complete any race longer than a 10k. In Feb. 2006, she grew bored during the winter, but one book piqued in her interest. She read, “First Marathons,” a collection of short stories detailing marathon runners’ account of their first 26.2-mile race. She thought, ‘Would I be able to do something like that?’ It turns out she could. RUNNER: TO PAGE 16

For more than 15 years, the Apple Valley Hockey Association has used the proceeds from charitable gambling to supplement its yearly operating budget. The association is registered as a 501(c)3 nonprofit with the state of Minnesota. The association operates its charitable gambling at four Apple Valley bars and restaurants. It sells pull-tabs at Bogart’s Place, as well as pull-tabs and Tuesday evening Bingo starting Sept. 27 at Rascal’s Bar & Grill. Wild Bill’s Sports Saloon hosts the association’s Saturday afternoon Bingo and pull-tab booth. The AVHA also has a pull-tab booth at Panino Brothers, said Leahy. The money raised helps offset the considerable costs of paying for ice time, which costs $150-$210 per hour depending on the facility, said Tim Everson, Apple Valley Hockey Association president. “One of the neat things we’ve been able to do for families ‌ if we have money left over at the end of the year, we’ll give families rebates on their ice bill,â€? Everson said. In an effort to get young hockey players to stick with the association through their high school years, the group offers to cover all the ice time for the Mite hockey teams for their first four years, though the families are responsible for the $175 registration fee.

“We want to get them hooked, said AVHA Assistant Gambling Manager Patty Leahy, who has been with the program since 1995. “We’re real proud we can cover the Mite hockey and get kids involved in something else besides video games, said AVHA Gambling Manager and Board Member Randy Olson. Olson said the gambling wing of the association has given an average of $150,000 a year to the AVHA since 2006. Additionally, 10 percent of the money earned from the charitable gambling is used for scholarship money for families who need financial assistance. In addition to the scholarships and ice time, proceeds from the charitable gambling helped fund the construction of the 4,500 square-foot AVHA Training Center – or dry-land facility in hockey lingo — two years ago, Everson said. The surface is plastic, but resembles ice, and allows players to train at cheaper rate than the higher ice time rates. The facility is exclusive to players in the Apple Valley High School district, which the AVHA encompasses. Eastview High School has a separate association, which represents its district. “As much as I would like to see one big Apple Valley hockey community, unfortunately we have two separate high schools so we have two separate youth programs, too, Everson said. Olson and Leahy encourage AVHA players to stick with the sport. The association has been the starting point for some of the most talented hockey players in the country. Products of the AVHA youth program include current Minnesota Wild player Mike Lundin, Dan Sexton of the Anaheim Ducks, former Wild player Erik Westrum, former No. 1 draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens David Fischer, and Karl Goehring, who was recently named as one of top 100 greatest Minnesota high school hockey players of all time. For Apple Valley resident Stacy Leong, the AVHA has been weaved into the fabric of her family’s life for more than 13 years. She and her husband Mike Leong have had all four of their kids play AVHA hockey. “Apple Valley hockey is more than an association, said Stacy Leong, also HOCKEY: TO NEXT PAGE

the AVHA ice coordinator. “We consider the people in the association to be a family. It sort of becomes a way of life, rather than a part of your life. Stacy Leong supports the charitable gambling the association operates, and partakes every now and then. “We have gone to them and they are so fun, she said. “We have played bingo over at Rascal’s. Stacey Leong said the charitable organization money is viewed positively among parents because hockey is such an expensive sport. She has seen a direct effect on her monthly association bills due to the money coming in from the pull-tabs and bingo operations. “The very last installment is very little to nothing because of what the charitable organization has brought in, she said. Everson understands that gambling can sometimes carry a negative connotation, but said the AVHA charitable gambling efforts are done with good intentions. “It’s something that we’ve done for a long time, Everson said. “We emphasize that by doing it, you’re supporting

the Apple Valley Hockey Association. I’ve never had anybody come back to me and say, ‘Why are you doing it?’ Olson is proud that the efforts of the gambling operations can help reduce
costs for families and help fund a youth sport association he believes gives young people tools to help them succeed in life. “The experience of maybe any athlet-
ics, of hockey, is just worthwhile for the kids to be able to use in their life, Olson said. “The commitment it takes, learning how to win and how to lose, learning how to get along.

The many languages of justice When a young man appeared in court recently to respond to a minor traffic violation, I sensed an elevated level of anxiety. He answered “yes” when I asked him if he understood the rights I had explained at the beginning of the hearing, and he answered “yes” when I asked him if he understood the charges he faced. It was when I asked him whether he wanted to plead guilty or not guilty to the charges, and he answered “yes” again, that I realized the reason for the heightened anxiety – he did not understand me. This experience introduces a subject of increasing importance and concern for the courts throughout Minnesota and the nation: how can we provide meaningful access to justice to the growing population that does not understand English or for whom English is a second language? A survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau found that from 2006 to 2008 more than 120 languages were spoken in Minnesota and that almost 10 percent of the population in Minnesota did not speak English in their homes. When non-English-speaking people are involved in court proceedings, they have a right to understand what’s going on. Even people who can get by in social settings with their English skills may need assistance when they are involved in more formal court proceedings. (After two years of Spanish classes at a local community college, I may be comfortable ordering a
EDWARD LYNCH Guest Columnist
cerveza at a cantina in Cancun, but would not want to rely on my Spanish in a Mexico City courtroom with my freedom at stake.) In 2010, more than 25,800 hearings in Minnesota courts required interpreters speaking more than 88 languages. During this same period, more than 4,500 hearings in the seven counties of the First Judicial District required interpreters speaking 48 languages to assist participants; an average of 18 hearings each day require an interpreter. Who provides these services? In years past, the availability of interpreters was uncertain, and the skills of interpreters were mostly unknown. Friends and family members or contacts from cultural, religious or ethnic organizations would frequently serve as interpreters. Hearings often had to be continued until an interpreter could be located, increasing the delay, expense and inconvenience to everyone involved, not just the nonEnglish-speaking participant. The major concern has not been expense or inconvenience, however, but whether the participants understand the proceedings. If the participant is a witness or a victim, understanding is important. If the participant is a defendant in a criminal matter, understanding is critical.
The Minnesota legislature recognized this when it passed a law that declares it is “the policy of this state that the constitutional rights of persons disabled in communication cannot be fully protected unless qualified interpreters are available to assist them in legal proceedings.” Disputes involving some of the most important matters in peoples’ lives are brought into court for resolution. When a person’s freedom, family, property or safety is at risk, he or she has a right to understand completely and participate fully to obtain a just result. To ensure that non-Englishspeaking people are provided timely, meaningful access to justice and a fair opportunity to understand and participate in court hearings in Minnesota, the Minnesota Supreme Court created the Court Interpreter Training and Certification Program, developed a Code of Professional Responsibility for Interpreters and established rules that explain the role of interpreters in court. As a result of this effort, more than 1,300 interpreters speaking more than 100 languages are now available to provide services to court participants. More than 750 of these interpreters have passed rigorous examinations and have been certified as interpreters in the 13 most common languages spoken in Minnesota. The courts in Minnesota have come a long way in responding to the needs and rights of nonEnglish-speaking people in court proceedings.
The cost of providing interpreters for court hearings in Minnesota in 2010 was $1.9 million. The cost of providing these services in the First Judicial District in 2010 was more than $330,000. In an effort to control these costs, counties throughout the state and in the First Judicial District have been developing best practices, sharing resources and entering into contractual relationships with interpreters to provide reliable services at reasonable costs. In Carver County, for example, interpreters for certain languages are provided via interactive TV from Hennepin County. This reduces travel for the interpreter, allows the interpreter to provide services in several counties from the same location and results in significant cost savings. There will always be a certain level of anxiety associated with any court appearance, but the anxiety should not result from a lack of understanding. The judicial branch is taking proactive measures to ensure that qualified interpreters are available to protect the rights of the increasing number of non-Englishspeaking people involved in court proceedings in Minnesota. Justice should be available and understandable to all people. Fortunately, in Minnesota, it is. Edward Lynch is chief judge of the First Judicial District, which includes the counties of Carver, Dakota, Goodhue, Le Sueur, McLeod, Scott, and Sibley.

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-

BOOYA event a hit for Apple Valley Fire Department BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Though the skies were grey and the temperature barely crept over 50 degrees, hundreds of Apple Valley residents congregated Sept. 17 at the city’s Fire Station No. 1 for its 33rd annual Fire Relief Association’s BOOYA event. Apple Valley Fire Chief Nealon Thompson estimated 800-1,000 visitors would attend the event based on previous years attendance totals. The constant line for the BOOYA might have proved his prediction correct. “This is the biggest event the department puts on during the year,” Thompson said. In total, 450 gallons of BOOYA – a tomato-based meat and vegetable stew – were cooked for the event. The stew began cooking at 11 p.m. the Friday night before and stewed for 12 hours until the event kicked off. The stew was cooked in seven 60- and 70-gallon pots at the fire station and it didn’t take long before the first pot was emptied Saturday morning. “We got rid of 60 gallons in a half hour,” said John Eibner, a retired Apple Valley firefighter. The stew is cooked using a secret
recipe and Eibner wasn’t about to spill the beans on the decades-old formula. “Only the cooks know,” said Eibner, who was with the fire department for 20 years. Thompson said the weather conditions were nearly ideal for this year’s event. “It’s perfect weather because it’s a hot soup,” Thompson said. “It’s a good day for on-site sales. A lot of people take it home and freeze it and some people use it for hunting season.” Two years ago, Thompson said, temperatures reached into the upper 80s and the sun shone all day. It’s hard to complain with weather like that, but the heat and sun kept sales of the hot stew down that year, he said. Apple Valley resident Brad Smith and attended the event with his family for the first time this year. He said his daughter went right to the kid’s activities behind the fire station. “We’ve got our 2-year-old in the jumpy thing,” Smith said. “That’s step No. 1, I guess.” Afterwards, Smith said he planned on getting in line to try the stew. “Absolutely,” Smith said. “You gotta

try the BOOYA. I’ve never had it before.” Another newcomer to the event, Apple Valley resident Carl Coleman, bought a large pail of BOOYA, though he wasn’t sure how long it would last. “It’s delicious,” said Coleman, who
attended with his daughter, girlfriend and her son. “We’ve got a gallon and an eighth of it is gone already.” As for how long the BOOYA would last, Coleman said, “probably only through the weekend.”

MVTA record ridership for 2011 MN State Fair The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority Express Bus Ridership to the Minnesota State Fair posted record totals, up 24 percent from 2010. Total ridership for the 12 days of the Fair was 53,414, an increase of more than 8 percent from the previous highest ridership in 2008 at 43,464. The first Saturday of the fair, MVTA had 8,259 rides. The highest ridership on that day prior to this was just below 7,000 and the highest ridership on any date was 7,135. The second Sunday, which had record-breaking attendance at the fair, ridership was 7,976, second only to the first Saturday in 2011. “MVTA’s State Fair Express Bus Service is important,” said MVTA Chair and Dakota County Commissioner Will Branning in a news release. “We have an opportunity to showcase our service and our fleet to the public – many of whom don’t regularly ride transit or who travel from outlying areas to take the bus rather than drive to the fairgrounds.
When residents see how easy it is to ride the bus to the State Fair, we hope they will consider it for the commute or other transportation needs.” MVTA is the public transportation provider for residents and businesses of Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Rosemount, and Savage. As you get older - the benefits of eating well By the National Institute on Aging ating well is vital for everyone at all ages, but can be especially important as your body ages. Your daily food choices can make an important difference in your health and in how you look and feel. Eating a well-planned, balanced mix of foods every day has many health benefits. For instance, eating well may reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, bone loss, some kinds of cancer, and anemia. If you already have one or more of these chronic diseases, eating well and being physically active may help you better manage them. Healthy eating may also help you reduce high blood pressure, lower high cholesterol, and manage diabetes. Eating well gives you the nutrients
E
needed to keep your muscles, bones, organs, and other parts of your body healthy throughout your life. These nutrients include vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fats, and water. Eating well helps keep up your energy level, too. By consuming enough calories — a way to measure the energy you get from food — you give your body the fuel it needs throughout the day. The number of calories needed depends on how old you are, whether you’re a man or woman, and how active you are. If you become less physically active as you age, you will probably need fewer calories to stay at the same weight. Choosing mostly nutrient-dense foods — foods which are high in nutrients but low in calories — can give you the nutrients you need while keeping down calorie intake.
To eat healthier, you can begin by taking small steps, making one change at a time. For instance, you might buy whole-grain bread, leaner meats, or more fruits and vegetables when you shop. These changes may be easier than you think. They’re possible even if you need help with shopping or cooking, or if you have a limited budget. If you have a specific medical condition, be sure to check with your doctor or dietitian about foods you should include or avoid.
Mix of foods Eating well means choosing a mix of healthy foods that give your body the nutrients it needs. Eating well also means consuming the right number of calories for your age, gender, and level of physical activity. You also need to
know what foods to limit. And of course, it’s important to enjoy your meals. To eat well, it’s best to choose a mix of nutrient-dense foods every day. Nutrient-dense foods are foods that are high in nutrients but low in calories. Look for foods that contain vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fats. Eat a variety of fresh, frozen, canned, or dried FRUITS every day. To make sure you get the benefit of the natural fiber in fruits, you should eat most of your fruits whole rather than as juices. Fruits may be purchased fresh, canned, frozen, or dried and may be eaten whole, cut-up, or pureed. Healthy Eating continues next page

MARATHONS Ciardelli ran three half marathons in 2006 and in October, she ran her first full-length one – the Twin Cities Marathon. “I just really had a blast in it and my family was so supportive,” she said. “They gave me motivation to want to do it again.” That motivation stuck with her, as she didn’t wait long to run her next race. Diane Ciardelli wanted to compete in a race out of state and ran a marathon in December 2006 in Dallas, Tex. Her next marathon trip was to Phoenix, Ariz., in January 2007. It was after this race she crafted her goal of running a marathon in all 50 states. “I thought I might as well just try and do them all before I’m 50,” Diane Ciardelli said. Since then, she has ran anywhere from nine to 12 marathons a year. She made a schedule to run marathons in all 50 states, and has largely stuck to that plan. Diane Ciardelli applied for the New York marathon in 2007, but wasn’t selected in the lottery drawing. She was

spurned again in 2008 and 2009, but after three years of applying, she raced in the event in 2010. All applicants get to race in their fourth year. Every race has its ups and downs, she said, and sometimes her final race time isn’t up to her standard. But no matter the conditions, her husband Mike Ciardelli said she never gives up on a race. “She always finishes them,” said Mike Ciardelli. “She’s tougher than nails. She’s got that spirit to get through and finish it.” “When and if you do have a good race, it pumps you up, because you think, ‘I must be getting better,’” Diane Ciardelli said. “It’s hit or miss with weather conditions and terrain. Somehow I’ve made it through 47 states and looking forward to number 48 this weekend.” Her 48th state marathon will be Sept. 18 at a state park in Erie, Penn. After that, she flies to Hartford, Conn., the second weekend in October and will run her 50th marathon the last weekend in October in Cape Cod, Mass. She had hoped to run the Boston Marathon as her 50th marathon, but didn’t have a fast enough time to qualify. Runners need at least a previous fourhour race time to even be considered. Diane Ciardelli has never raced that fast RUNNER: TO NEXT PAGE
Rosemount resident Diane Ciardelli has three races left before she has run a marathon in all 50 U.S. states before her 50th birthday on April 6, 2012. She is shown here at the Aug. 2010 Mesa Falls Marathon in Ashton, ID where she won a third-place age group award. (Submitted photo)

Runner FROM PREVIOUS PAGE and even if she did, she wouldn’t be guaranteed a spot in the race. “That’s why I’m going to Cape Cod in October,” she said. “I’ll leave the Boston Marathon for the super-speedy people.” The Big Sur Marathon in California has been her favorite to date, but the Twin Cities Marathon is a close second. “I just get the chills when I run into downtown Minneapolis – running past the Basilica,” Diane Ciardelli said. Mike Ciardelli said traveling with his wife has helped them form great memories. “We’ve traveled all around the country and see things you wouldn’t see,” he said. “It gets you out there to see the world.” One factor that has allowed Diane Ciardelli to nearly complete her goal is her health. She has only had two significant injuries, one of which put her out of commission for more than five weeks. In 2009, she was diagnosed with plantar fasciatis, which causes extreme foot pain even while walking. Running a marathon was out of the question. But, she didn’t miss any races on her schedule. Diane Ciardelli is thankful more injuries haven’t set her back. “I’ve been pretty lucky that I haven’t had any stress fractures or anything like that,” she said. “They’re pretty common in runners.”
TRAINING Ciardelli has a fairly scheduled training routine. “I usually run every other day, usually between six or eight miles during the
week then a long run of anywhere between 10-18 miles on either Saturday or Sunday,” she said. She enjoys the mix of city paths and rural space Rosemount allows for her training. Her most daunting training area is also one of her favorites. “The Lebanon Hills trails have a fivemile loop,” she said. “Boy does that place ever kick your butt. That’s tough in there. But, it’s so peaceful. I love it. It’s definitely more fun than pounding it away on the sidewalk.” When she’s not out running in Rosemount, Diane Ciardelli trains at the fitness center where she works –Ceridian Corp. in Bloomington. She does yoga and strength training, which serve as a great supplement to running dozens of miles, Ciardelli said. As for how many miles she’s put on, Diane Ciardelli estimates she has run 1,100-1,200 miles yearly since 2006. “If I wasn’t running races, I probably would have run more,” she said. “I actually tone it down before a race.”
77 after a battle with breast cancer. Her mother also had previously been diagnosed with adult onset Type 2 Diabetes. Diane Ciardelli’s sister JoAnne Gill can attest to the effect the mother’s passing has had on both of them. “Watching our mom die of cancer I believe is a big motivator for Diane,” Gill said. “Our mom died four years ago today, nine months after being diagnosed. I know Diane was running before our mom got sick, but it really emphasized the importance to keep going as we don’t want to go through what we witnessed firsthand what our mom endured.” Gill said her sister’s unselfish nature might have prevented her from making exercise a large part of her life sooner. “I think it’s being a mom and putting everyone else first in your family,” Gill said. “And when Diane’s kids got older, she realized she could finally put herself first and ‘got off the couch’ so to speak,” Gill said. Diane Ciardelli also states that she wants to be the healthy role model for her daughters that her mother wasn’t for her. “I wanted to make sure they knew they had a mom that was active and wasn’t just going to go into middle-age getting plump and sitting around,”

MOTIVATION Running has allowed Diane Ciardelli to maintain a healthy lifestyle in her 40s. However, this model of health and exercise is not something she or her family grew up seeing. “We never saw my mom exercise once,” Diane Ciardelli said. Her mother passed away in 2007 at age
Ciardelli said. “I definitely don’t want to get old and find that I’ve neglected my health to the point where I can’t do anything about it.” Diane Ciardelli’s healthy lifestyle has rubbed off on her daughters, who don’t shy away from spreading the news about her racing schedule. “They’re great,” Diane Ciardelli said. “I think they get a kick out of telling their teachers and their friends that [their] mom is off doing another marathon.”
FUTURE When she finishes her last marathon next month, Diane Ciardelli plans to celebrate in the same way she would after a typical race. “We’ve had a couple pasta parties at our house after the Twin Cities Marathons in 2006 and 2009,” Ciardelli said, adding she anticipates 30 family members will come to the dinner. “That will fill up my house quick.” As far as future racing goals, Diane Ciardelli is planning on running marathons in all the Canadian provinces. She already has scheduled to run marathons in Saskatchewan and Winnipeg next year. Beyond that, she wants to race in Europe, as soon as her daughter graduates high school. “I’d definitely like to do the Berlin marathon,” Diane Ciardelli said. Though she will continue running, Diane Ciardelli said she won’t keep up the pace she has set since running her first marathon in 2006. “I can’t believe it’s five years,” Diane Ciardelli said. “I’ve got to find something else to keep me motivated. I know I’ll always run, but I probably won’t run as much as I do now.”

EAGLE INVITATIONAL Defending state Class 3A champion Lakeville North, along with Apple Valley, Eagan and Eastview, will be in the field at the Eagle Invitational volleyball tournament this weekend. Action begins at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Apple Valley High School.

Groves is AVHS athletic department’s know-it-all BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Jeff Groves isn’t a full-time employee of Apple Valley High School and the closest thing he has to an official title is assistant volleyball coach. Ask people at the school about him, and the same word typically comes up: Irreplaceable. Groves, a 1987 AVHS graduate, is the athletic department’s jack of all trades. If he’s not with the volleyball team, he might be working the public address system at another Eagles event. He has worked with AVHS student-athletes on leadership councils. He’s the school’s inhouse athletic historian. Groves also has a key role in running Apple Valley’s three volleyball tournaments – including the flagship event, the Eagle Invitational, which begins Friday, Sept. 23. AVHS athletics director Pete Buesgens is only half-joking when he says his major contribution to the Eagle Invitational’s success is “staying out of Jeff ’s way.” This will be the 34th year of the Eagle Invitational. Retired AVHS volleyball coach Walt Weaver, who helped establish the tournament in 1978, said Groves is one of the main reasons the event has endured. “The center of the whole thing is the coaching staff, with Gordy [Hagert, current AVHS head coach] and Dan [Seppala, assistant coach],” Weaver said. “And, Jeff is key. He would be hard to replace. He was handling a lot of the tournament details even before I left.” Groves not only handles the logistics of a 16-team, two-day tournament, he also wields a lot of influence over who gets invited each year. He studies recent performances, which teams graduated top players, which teams have good young players on the way up, to compile a list of teams to invite to the tournament. Groves said he has already started working on the 2012 Eagle Invitational. “It’s a big help that almost every South Suburban Conference team has at least one Division I player,” he said. This year’s tournament includes five SSC teams – Apple Valley, Lakeville North, Eagan, Eastview and Bloomington Jefferson.
When the Eagle Invitational started in 1987, it was one of a few regular-season volleyball tournaments in the state. In recent years the number of tournaments has grown rapidly as schools started their own as fundraisers. The Apple Valley tournament maintained its cachet with coaches because it continued to deliver strong fields. In 32 of the past 33 years, the state large-school champion played in the Eagle Invitational earlier that season. How tough is the tournament? The host school has won more state championships (two) than Eagle Invitational titles (one). “We have a stronger field than the state tournament,” Groves said. “Milan [Mader, former Lakeville North coach] had a quote many years ago: ‘I don’t care if we go 0-4. I want good competition.’” Groves’ family moved from Burnsville to Apple Valley when he was in fifth grade. Initially, he said he didn’t want to move. By the time he got to the high school, Apple Valley had become an athletic power. “We were 35-3 in football my last three years,” Groves said. “No, I wasn’t on the team. I played on the tennis team. I was a terrible athlete, but I always liked stats.” There was no high school volleyball for boys, but while Groves was an AVHS student and after graduation, he learned what he could from Weaver and other coaches. He said it also was a big help for him to hang around the Minnesota Monarchs, a professional team that Weaver coached for a year. Groves also is the go-to person for AVHS sports historical data. Buesgens said that when he was preparing a news release congratulating boys soccer coach Chuck Scanlon on his 500th career victory, Groves was his first call for background information. One of Groves’ ongoing projects is collecting data for an Apple Valley High School sports history. It might eventually become a book. “We’ve talked about doing that,” he said. “The longer the project goes on, the more I feel I need to get it done. Some of our coaches are retiring.” Groves said he can’t imagine being GROVES: TO NEXT PAGE

Will defense win championships for Eagan girls soccer team? BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Soccer and baseball would seem to have little in common, except that each is played with a spherical object. But when Eagan girls soccer coach Mark Obarski was asked what his team needed to do to be successful, he drew a parallel to the Minnesota Twins. Not the 2011 Twins, though. Obarski was talking about the World Series champion Twins teams of 1987 and 1991, which played solid defense and took advantage of scoring opportunities when they presented themselves. “Those teams manufactured runs,”
he said. “We have to manufacture goals.” The Wildcats (9-1) have had three games where they have scored seven goals or more, but they might not be as explosive offensively as past Eagan teams. As they moved into the South Suburban Conference portion of their schedule, defense has been paramount. Eagan, ranked seventh in Class 2A, has allowed only two goals all season and just one in its first four SSC games. But in those four conference games the Wildcats were shut out once and were held to a single goal in two others. SOCCER: TO NEXT PAGE

the Irish’s top four runners. He was 15th overall in the Apple Jack Invitational in 16:33.2. Seniors Joe Carlson and Timothy Sampers were 26th and 36th. The Irish, who have won the first two meets they entered, will compete Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Roy Griak Invitational. In that race, held at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course, “most of the top teams from Minnesota, Iowa, both Dakotas, and a few schools from out West are competing,” Harder said. “We are looking forward to the challenge to see where we stand in the Midwest.” Eagan finished ninth of 14 teams in the boys race at the Apple Jack Invitational, but Wildcats junior Sidney Speir took second place individually in a school-record 15:53.4. Another South Suburban Conference runner, Bloomington Jefferson senior Jan Ketterson, was first
in 15:36.5. Lakeville South won the girls team championship at the Apple Jack Invitational with 62 points. Eagan was second with 89. Prior Lake placed fourth, giving the South Suburban Conference three of the top four teams in the meet. Two-time defending state Class AA individual champion Maria Hauger couldn’t be caught on the 4K Aronson Park course, finishing first in 13:35.1. Eagan junior Danielle Anderson was second in 14:21.0, three seconds ahead of Lakeville South ninth-grader Kaytlyn Larson. Eagan senior Alanna Stangl also placed in the top 10, taking seventh in 14:54.5. Ninth-graders Anna Van Wyk and Kelli Praska were 15th and 24th. Sophomore Reilly Hostager was 41st, junior Elizabeth Frick finished 44th and junior Phoebe Craig was 81st. Rosemount was 10th in the girls team competition. Sophomore Hannah Grim, who was 27th, was the Irish’s top finisher.
• Burnsville senior Cole O’Brien finished first at the St. Olaf Showcase on Sept. 16 in 15:59. The race is run on the same course where O’Brien finished second in the 2010 state Class AA meet. It was O’Brien’s second victory in three races; the other was in the seasonopening Minneapolis South Invitational. Burnsville was sixth in the boys team competition, won by White Bear Lake. • Another Burnsville runner, sophomore Vivian Hett, also won last week. Hett took first in the girls race at the Rochester Mayo Invitational in 14:44.22. Burnsville was third in the girls team standings with 126 points, only five behind first-place Red Wing. • The high school cross country schedule for Saturday, Sept. 24, includes three major invitational meets. One of them is the Eagle Invitational at Apple Valley High School. Racing begins at 10 a.m.
A Sept. 15 game against Eastview was a prime example of what the Wildcats need to do to win. They cashed in a scoring opportunity, got a lead and made it stand up with stellar defensive work as they beat the previously undefeated Lightning 1-0. Obarski said Eagan took a more conservative approach defensively in the Eastview game.
“I didn’t think we could push up like we usually do against a team with their speed,” the coach said. “Eastview is probably the fastest, most athletic team I’ve ever seen in high school, to be honest.” Junior forward Marissa Ganske, the Wildcats’ leading scorer with seven goals and two assists, had the only goal of the Eastview game. The victory kept the Wildcats (3-1 in the SSC) one game behind league-leading Lakeville North. Eagan plays host to North at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27. The Wildcats have 14 seniors on their roster, many of whom were there when
Eagan went 16-2-4 last season and reached the state tournament. The way the season ended is a sore subject with the Wildcats, who lost to Mounds View 1-0 in the Class AA quarterfinals. The goal came on a play Eagan players, coaches and fans believed should have been ruled offside. Senior captains Kristen Knutson, Jessica Hart and Sarah Lochner are the heart of the Eagan defense. Knutson, the returning starter in goal, has a .951 save percentage and seven shutouts. Hart and Lochner are returning defenders. Eagan also has six players with three or more goals. Senior Angela LaCroix
plays defense but also has proven to be a skilled playmaker with seven assists. She had four assists in a 9-0 victory over Bloomington Kennedy on Sept. 13. Obarski said the Wildcats realize the margin for error is slim in most South Suburban games. “Soccer is one of those sports where you need to have some things go your way in order to win games,” he said. “In this [Eastview] game, we cleared two balls off the line in the second half. When we played Lakeville South [a 1-0 loss Sept. 8] we didn’t get the breaks, and Lakeville South played an excellent game as well.”

anyplace else. “The school has such great tradition, and it’s only been open 36 years,” he said.
Eastview High School has seen a lot of talented players come through its girls soccer program, including three who now play for the University of Minnesota. But head coach David Herem doesn’t have to look back wistfully at the past because the Lightning’s present is pretty good, too. Eastview won its first six games before a 2-2 tie against Bloomington Jefferson on Sept. 13 and a 1-0 loss at Eagan on Sept. 15. The Lightning was ranked sixth in Class AA last week. “We have a tremendously fast team,” Herem said. “We’ve got the 4x100 [-meter team from track and field] on the field.” The speed allows the Lightning to use a quick, high-pressure style of play that can wear down opponents. Even when Herem goes to his bench, he can send in
BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Third-ranked Rosemount got a competitive race from Andover before winning the boys team championship at the Apple Jack Invitational cross country meet. Rosemount and Andover each had four runners in the top 12 in the Sept. 16 meet at Aronson Park in Lakeville. The Irish’s fifth runner finished 10 places ahead of Andover’s No. 5 runner and Rosemount pulled away to the team title with 43 points. Andover had 55, and no other school was within 50 points of the top two finishers. Irish seniors Nathan Rock (16 minutes, 4.1 seconds), Chandler Dye (16:09.3) and Calvin Lehn (16:09.7) finished fourth, sixth and seventh in the 5K race. Junior Trevor Capra, the only underclassman in the Rosemount varsity lineup, finished 11th in 16:16.8. Rosemount coach Chris Harder said senior Nick Couillard is closing the gap on

Eagle Invitational preview The top five teams – and seven of the top 10 – in last week’s state Class 3A rankings will be at the Eagle Invitational this weekend. Also in the field is Faribault Bethlehem Academy, ranked first in Class 1A. Last year’s Eagle Invitational finalists, Wayzata and Lakeville North, are back. Wayzata beat Lakeville North in the championship match in Apple Valley, but seven weeks later, North swept Wayzata in the state Class 3A final. Matches start at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. The tournament continues Saturday, Sept. 24, with the championship match scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
athletes whose speed causes problems for opponents. “For example, we beat Duluth East 4-1 [on Sept. 10],” Herem said. “That could easily have been a 1-0 or 2-1 game because Duluth East is a very good team. But later in the game you could tell they were having trouble running with our girls.” Thanks in part to a couple of eightgoal performances against Roseville and Bloomington Kennedy, the Lightning is averaging more than four goals a game. Senior forward Paris Sanders led the team through the first seven games with eight goals and 10 points. But three other players – seniors Leah Nesheim, Taryn MacMillan and Emily Sutliff – have at least four goals each, and sophomore Kellie McGhan has been an impact player with two goals and six assists. A team as offense-oriented as Eastview can be vulnerable in its own
end of the field, but “our defense has been fantastic,” Herem said. “We allowed only four goals in our first six games.” The Lightning’s defense can handle the pressure. Several of Eastview seniors are defenders, including Courtney Kukowski, Lauren Selby, Katie Tharp and Brianna Ismale. Junior Anhthu Huynh has played almost all the minutes in goal. As impressive as Eastview’s start was, there are plenty of ways the Lightning can keep itself grounded. First, it has to fight through some injuries; McGhan and Tharp have missed time with ankle problems. Then there’s the schedule. Eastview is one of three South Suburban Conference teams ranked in the top 10 in Class AA. It will play at No. 5 Lakeville North at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22. “It seems like almost every team we’re playing is ranked,” Herem said.

Football roundup: Eastview wins a wild one Rosemount rallies to remain undefeated; Burnsville gets 1st victory BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS The wildest finish in South Suburban Conference football this season gave Eastview its first victory of 2011. A.J. Stockwell caught a two-point conversion pass from Ryan Reger for the deciding score in the Lightning’s 36-35 overtime victory Sept. 16. Eagan (0-3) had trailed by 14 points in the fourth quarter before rallying to tie the game. The Wildcats then took the first possession in overtime and scored to take their first lead. Senior running back Eric Krupke scored Eastview’s overtime touchdown on a 3-yard run. The Lightning (1-2) then went for two points and the victory. Krupke and LeAndre Kennedy scored two rushing touchdowns each for Eastview, which held leads of 14-0
and 28-14. Reger also threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Montreal Roberts in the third quarter. In the fourth, Eagan’s Mitch Johnson returned a fumble 64 yards for a touchdown and Michael Busch scored on a 12-yard run. The Wildcats could not get a conversion after either, which still left them trailing at 28-26. An Eastview punt snap out of the end zone tied the game. Busch rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Eagan quarterback Drew Bauer passed for 108 yards and rushed for 81. Bauer also had a 15-yard rushing touchdown. Eagan’s score in overtime came on a 4-yard pass from Bauer to Eric Woodcock. Eagan tries for its first victory when it goes to Apple Valley (0-3) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. Also on Friday, Eastview seeks to even its record when it plays host to Bloomington Kennedy (0-3).

Nate Lemoine in the fourth quarter to remain undefeated. The Irish, ranked seventh in Class 3A, are 3-0 heading into their home game against eighth-ranked Lakeville North (3-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. Prior Lake (1-2) scored in the second quarter of its Sept. 16 game against Rosemount and held the lead until the fourth. Lemoine scored both of his touchdowns on 16-yard runs. He had 73 yards on 14 carries. Senior running back Andy Gustafson gained 94 yards on 26 carries. Rosemount outgained Prior Lake 239150 and had a seven-minute edge in time of possession. Neither team had a turnover.
Burnsville 20, Kennedy 7 Blaze senior Dan Motl scored a touchdown, kicked a field goal and a conversion, and ran for a two-point conversion as Burnsville won its first game under new head coach Tyler Krebs. Burnsville led 12-7 in the fourth quarter of the Sept. 16 game when Motl’s 52yard touchdown run sealed the victory. He then ran for a two-point conversion. Motl kicked a 27-yard field goal in the
first quarter. Justin Kuznar’s 2-yard run in the second quarter sent the Blaze to the locker room with a 10-7 halftime lead. A&J Painting is a family owned and operated business. A&J Painting is a family owned and operated business that was started 15 years ago with my sons Andrew, Jeremiah, and David. In today’s economic climate we have maintained a healthy business due to our professional approach and work ethic that carries the highest standards of quality for every job. We have thrived over the years because of the volume of callbacks and customer referrals from previously contracted jobs. No contract is too big or too small for our company. A&J Painting operates as a licensed and insured painting company that offers trained and skilled (journeyman) employee’s to paint and remodel your home or business. All of our employee’s have been with the company for several years and each has been trained to the highest standards. We take pride in the honesty, integrity, and character of the young men we have employed. My son Andrew is a highly skilled and trained carpenter. He also does taping, knock down ceilings, tiling, installs plumbing, lighting fixtures, countertops and offers many types of custom carpentry. Andrew operates a professional spray booth off site for finishes on cabinetry and furniture. His current focus is on remodeling, updating, and modernizing
homes and businesses. Andrew’s perfectionist approach to every job and the extent of his skill set have made him one of the best craftsman in the Twin Cities. My other two sons run the painting end of the business and are also professionally trained Artists. Jeremiah attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and later studied under the mentorship of the nationally renowned portrait and fresco painter Mark Balma. David similarly was accepted into a full time master apprenticeship program at the young age of 16 at the highly respected Atelier Lack Studio. They followed in the family tradition of mastering a professional craft and skill which they have brought to our company. Between the two they offer 25 years of experience painting interior and exterior homes in the metro area with our family business. A&J Painting takes great pride in our ability to make a true and lasting impression on you. I can’t tell you how many letters and calls I have received over the years from customers who just wanted to share with me what a great job we did. We hope to have the opportunity to do so with you as well. We are only a call or e-mail away to offer you a free estimate of our professional services.
