Apple Valley PETCO to host pet adoption event More than 50 pets will be at Nov. 5-6 event BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS

In these trying economic times, people have been stressed, tensed and some pushed to the brink. Often times, what happens to people’s pets can go unnoticed. Natural disasters in the southern United States, as well as local home foreclosures have provided a wave of animals to animal shelters, human societies and rescue shelters. The Apple Valley PETCO will do its part to help find homes for a small percentage of the thousands of animals who need a permanent residence. PETCO will host a Mega Adoption event 10 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, and 12-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at 7590 W. 150th St. in Apple Valley, at the corner of Highway

42 and Cedar Avenue. The event will help local homeless pets find homes and give animal lovers in the area an opportunity to meet at least 60 different animals each day. Event activities include a “Spin and Win” game for special prizes and guests can also receive pet nutrition advice from Natural Balance, Nutro and Blue Buffalo pet food representatives. Local animal rescue shelters on hand include the Farmington-based Last Hope Inc., Braveheart Rescue from Hastings and Angel of Hope from St. Paul. Lee Knauf, general manager at the Apple Valley PETCO, urges people to attend the event and consider if pet adoption is right for them. “They need to come to the event because there are thousands of homeless pets that need new homes,” Knauf said. “That would be the main reason.” PET ADOPTION: TO PAGE 5

Toastmasters develops leaders and communicators More than 200 Toastmasters clubs meet weekly throughout the metro area BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS A club exists where people can enhance their speaking skills, as well as leadership abilities. These people commit only one hour per week to attend the meetings. This club is called Toastmasters. There are numerous Toastmasters clubs around the metro area, with more than 230 clubs located within a 50-mile radius of the 55122 Eagan Zip Code. Toastmasters International was founded in 1924 and has had more than 4 million members join its ranks. Currently, there are 270,000 members worldwide who meet weekly at 13,000 clubs. Club 3561 is B l u e s Communications Plus, which meets 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Wednesday at the Blue Cross Blue Shield Anoka Room, 3535 Blue Cross Road in Eagan. The club has 20 members, mostly Blue Cross employees, but others are invited to join. “One fourth to one third of our members are outside of Blue Cross Blue Shield,” said Vice President of Public Relations Bill Johnson. Toastmasters members are assigned roles for each meeting. The “Toastmaster” serves as the host or master of ceremonies. The “Grammarian” presents a word for the day that all members are encouraged to use throughout the meeting. Other members provide a thought for the day, give speeches or provide feedback on each presenter’s speeches. The “Ah Counter” listens for words and phrases used as pause fillers or verbal crutches – words such as “ah,” “um,” and “you know.”

“That feedback helps us to hear our speaking ability, even though we might not want to hear it,” said Vice President of Membership Dave Johnson, who acted as the Oct. 26 meeting General Evaluator. The “General Evaluator” provides feedback to all meeting participants, describing positives as well providing suggestions for improvement. Toastmasters Club 3561 President Jackie Maher joined the club nearly two years ago, and said becoming a member has been invaluable part of her life. “It’s been a great experience – lifechanging in every way,” Maher said. Maher said many new members are instantly hooked and drawn to the club. For many, it’s a highlight of their lives. “I’ve heard many say that this is the best part of their whole week,” she said. “Not only practicing their public speaking skills, but also their leadership skills.” Becoming a Toastmasters member helped Bill Johnson grow socially and as a leader. “Coming to Toastmasters has offered me an opportunity to come out of my shell,” Johnson said. “It’s not a pure social setting, but it’s a setting where people are trying to encourage you.” New Toastmaster club members are assigned mentors who help set goals and benchmarks. New members must present a timeline or framework for how many speeches they will give in any given time. When Jackie Maher joined, she chose to give 10 speeches throughout the first one and a half years of her membership. “It’s really at your pace to help you along the way, which is really nice,” Maher said. Toastmasters focuses on two types of speeches, impromptu and prepared, Bill Johnson said. People who work in a management

Last Hope and PETCO partner each Saturday for pet adoption events and Braveheart Rescue also works closely with PETCO. The Nov. 5-6 adoption event is the first of its kind hosted by the Apple Valley PETCO. Knauf will consider the event a success, “if all the cats and dogs get a home,” he said. “It just depends upon two things – how many animals are adopted and if nothing else, getting the awareness out to the public that there are a lot more groups out there than just the humane societies.” Bev Orr, president of Last Hope Inc., says the need has never been greater for animals to be adopted. “They need ‘forever’ homes,” Orr said. “Right now with the economy the way it has been, there is a need for us. I’ve been doing this for 27 years and I’ve never seen anything like it. We don’t have room for all of them. Every time we adopt one out, we can bring another in.” Events like the upcoming Mega Adoption are vital for groups like Last Hope because it gives them a public presence they don’t normally have. “We do not have a shelter,” Orr said. “All of our animals are in foster homes. That’s why PETCO is so important. They allow us to bring [the animals] directly to the store.” Through September, Last Hope had adopted out 1,311 animals this year, and have roughly 100 staying at foster homes at one time. All the animals at the adoption event have been vaccinated spayed or neutered and have gone to a veterinarian for inspec-

tion. Last Hope pets can be adopted starting at $100 and all Braveheart Rescue dogs can be adopted for $250 regardless of gender, breed or age, said Braveheart President Brandi Tracy. Tracy keeps 25-30 dogs at her five-acre property. Eventually, her goal is to have 100 acres to accommodate more than 100 dogs at a time. She can give dogs more space and freedom other shelters cannot afford. “It’s so much better for them to be in a home or a place like mine,” Tracy said. “The dogs are outside during the day four hours in the morning and four to five hours at night.” Many of the dogs Tracy takes in have come from places destroyed or damaged by natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods, or from homes that have been foreclosed on and the owners can no longer care for them. The longer the animals go without permanent homes, the more love and attention they need, Tracy said. “So many of these dogs need to be rehabbed,” Tracy said. “They need to get friendly with dogs again. They need to get friendly with humans again.” Tracy views the PETCO adoption event as a way to get out her message regarding the rescue and adopting out of pets. “What’s important for the public to try and understand, people have decided that euthanization is no longer a viable way to treat animals that have been abandoned or hurt, or owner surrendered,” Tracy said. Last Hope, Inc. calls itself “a chain of love for animals,” said Orr. “It’s always been our standing saying. They really do need people who care.”

The changing world of gathering news Maybe it’s my age or perhaps a generational thing that has caused me to notice, but the world of print media seems to be changing considerably from not too long ago. The use of a pen or pencil and a reporter’s notebook is becoming used less to new forms of newsgathering, which requires one to remain knowledgeable and engaged in these techniques. When I began my career in the media in the mid-’90s, most new technology was not available, thus requiring all of us in the field to pick up telephones, get in our vehicles, and travel to destinations near and far. This was in broadcast media, but the gathering techniques were on par with print, mostly. The Internet had not taken hold, and of course it did not yet have the impact on people in the way it seems to affect us all in many ways. And even then, my image of a reporter, from old TV shows and movies, was that of a busy man with messy clothes and perhaps a 5 o’clock shadow, and a “press” ID in his hat while wearing a trench coat.

MICHAEL RICCI Burnsville/Lakeville Community Editor

In fact, this idea of an “old school reporter” is so outdated that it is now being offered to all as a Halloween costume. It’s not and certainly has not been a representation of what a modernday reporter looks like. Now, we like everyone else from many walks of life. If you are a movie or TV fan, I am sure you’ve seen images of an old newsroom. The reporters, in between Lou Grant yelling to finish their stories yesterday, were still hammering away on old word processors, or maybe even typewriters. And with no walls to separate reporters from one another, it was chaos, and loud. This atmosphere fortunately does not exist here at Sun Newspapers, but it still does elsewhere. The difference, however, is it exists only in the energy that comes with reporting the news

on deadline. In our time of nearly instant notification of events, or just communication in general, all of the old tools have been pushed aside to make room for more than just computers but all these are capable of. Much work is done by monitoring sites online, and in some cases, the Internet is the primary source for news tips. Some reporters no longer take notes with pad and pen but instead type notes either during an interview or after, having recorded the entire conversation with a digital voice recorder. You still see reporter’s notebooks, but certainly an alternative is being us as well. The gathering process makes it advantageous to any reporter to know of and how to use new software and online sites daily. Instead of a fax, we have portable document files, (PDFs). These replaced the traditionally faxed news releases. We still have a fax machine here, but it’s not used a great deal. Online streaming has made it possible to view meetings without leaving the office. In other

words, a reporter can either watch a meeting remotely as it is occurring or watch it at another time. With the advent of sites like Facebook, Twitter, the new OurCommonPlace.com, as well as websites for local governments and many other key newsrelated institutions, reporters can now monitor activity, engage in any discussions, and most of all we can gather news using these new sources simply with an Internet access. For example, Twitter is being used by the Minnesota Sate Patrol to instantly provide information related to crash scenes, most notably the crash that claimed the life of two construction workers on the Interstate 35W MnPASS land. This allowed for nearly instant, quotable information from a direct source on the scene. Pages like Facebook allow a reporter to “like” an event or an individual to monitor what is happening with the event or whay someone said about.

ISD 196 was one of the very few districts in the state to grant a pay increase to teachers last time around (only 1 percent, however). Of course, we all know who shows up in droves to vote in every school board election – the teachers. Maybe if more of us “regular” folks showed up to vote, we could return the board to the status of employer, rather than the lackey to the union. Jerry Norsby Apple Valley

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Coggshall would bring fresh perspective to ISD 196 School Board To the editor: Look around. Our community is changing. Our challenges are changing. But our school board members haven’t changed for a number of years. I, for one, would like to see a new face on the board – someone who has made the effort and taken the time to run for the opportunity to serve. I know experience counts, but I

also know we have to prepare for the future and keep generating new ideas and viewpoints. It’s important we don’t become complacent by just filling in the circles next to the incumbents’ names on the ballot. Don’t get me wrong. Our school board has done a good job, but I strongly believe our children’s education is too important to become complacent about. That’s why I’m supporting Fay Coggshall for ISD 196 School Board. She’s hard working, sincere and truly believes in doing the right thing. I’ll be filling in the circle by her name on Nov. 8. Sadiq Abdirahman

Column FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Sometimes this can lead to news if it is not newsworthy itself. As widely used as it is, though, Facebook does not have what a news site features. The new Burnsville Common Place, a website for local community engagement and for residents to connect and share with their neighbors, gives us the ability to post questions about any imaginable community topic and receive input – in the way of sources – on an almost instant

basis. When you are on a deadline, this is ideal. The difficulty as one who did not grow up with all of this new technology is the need to remain on the cutting edge. It does not come as naturally to those my age and older, but I welcome this challenge as my belief is most people will eventually need familiarity with most forms of technology in the years to come. Now, with smartphones being so prevalent in our society, and the ability they have as “mini computers,” it’s not a stretch to say that the future of news gathering and reporting will continue to change. The trick is, as I’ve said, is to stay on top of this so you don’t get left behind.

Fitness FROM PAGE 1 and Lake Elmo resident Meghan Odom are co-owners of this franchise location, with Dehart acting as a manager and Odom acting as trainer. The two met when Dehart was the fitness manager at the North St. Paul Fitness Center where Odom had been working as a trainer. “I had always thought about owning a business,” said Odom. “I asked Angie one day, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we owned our own fitness center?’ I never thought she would go for it.” “Surprise!” replied Dehart. Both have fitness-related degrees, with Dehart graduating from St. Cloud State University with a bachelor’s in sports medicine and Odom recieved her associate’s degree in health and fitness from Globe University. The fitness studio equally balances cardiovascular training, strength training, nutrition and accountability, Dehart said. “Those are our four principals for success,” said Dehart. “We’re a one-stop shop.” The studio will feature six pieces of strength training equipment, two treadmills, two elliptical machines, free weights and an abdominal bench, Odom said. Rosemount was chosen as the location site because it fit the demographic model the franchise looks for when opening new studios. The studio reaches out to women ages 35-55. Disposable income and city population in a given area are also factored, Dehart said. “I know the Rosemount area is really starting to develop,” Odom said. “And, it’s real close to Apple Valley, which is really nice,” Dehart added. The studio won’t sell memberships per se, but rather will sell personal fitness packages. Women can sign up for three-month, six-month or yearlong packages. Each session consists of 30 minutes of weight training, 25 minutes of cardio training and nutrition coaching. One personal trainer will work with one to four women at a time for as little as $19/session, Odom said. “They can push each other,” Odom said of the women in small groups. “You’re not alone. You’re doing it together.” Dehart hopes the studio will foster a sense of togetherness among the women who use it. “We would like to create a small community of women that use each other for support, as well as the personal trainer,” Dehart said. The nutrition component will fea-

The first one to open is located in St. Louis Park. (Photo by Matthew Hankey – Sun Newspapers) ture a six-day meal plan and a protein shake per session. Participants will weigh-in bi-monthly as part of the accountability component. Additionally, Dehart or Odom plan on sending weekly e-mails to the women encouraging them to keep up with the program and to share interesting fitness or nutrition stories. “You’re getting so much more for your money and your time,” Dehart said of the studio. Odom and Dehart traveled to Boston in November 2010 for a Get in Shape for Women Discovery Day. There, they met with other franchise owners and realized this company was one they wanted to work for. “It has everything we both believe in,” Odom said of the franchise’s val-

ues. During their time in Boston, Dehart and Odom were impressed with how other owners described the program as a great way to meet people. “They said a lot of the women create lifelong friends,” Odom said. “A lot of these women became best friends with the people they work out with.” Dehart and Odom attended franchise school this year in January. Get in Shape for Women will host its grand opening Nov. 12. There will be a drawing for $100 off a first fitness package and women can tour the studio and sign up for a free session, Dehart said. Dehart is confident the Get in Shape for Women program will work for those that commit to it. “If you follow the program, we can guarantee results,” Dehart said. “You

can’t succeed without all four parts.” The studio will be open 6 a.m. to noon and 4-8 p.m. Monday-Friday; 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays and closed on Sundays. Odom and Dehart are currently the only staff at the studio, but may be adding another in a couple months. “Once our client base is built up, we will potentially hire another trainer,” Dehart said. “At the most, though, we would only have three on staff.” Dehart has spent years in the fitness business, but becoming a franchise owner of a studio is as good as it gets. “When it’s your own business, it’s rewarding,” she said. How to switch majors successfully

Choosing a major is often met with trepidation. College students may feel pressured to choose a major when they are less than certain about what they want to study. Majors aren’t set in stone and students have the opportunity to switch concentrations if their original choice isn’t the right fit. Perhaps now more than ever, there is pressure on students to pick the right college major. In this weak economy, experts are touting advice

on choosing a major that gives students the best chance of finding a job after graduation. The National Center for Education Statistics says that in 2007-2008, the most popular majors were business, social sciences, history, and education. According to Capital University, students usually have so many interests that they have difficulty narrowing their choices. Their first inclination is not to declare a major and wait to see if they find their niche. In general, two out of every three university students change majors at least once. This should give hope to students who feel they need a chance. Here are some tips that should help with the process. * Wait to declare. Many educators advise waiting a semester or two before declaring a major. Take a variety of elective courses and general

www.minnlocal.com – Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 – Apple Valley, Rosemount & Eagan Sun-Current

Spotlight on Education “Imagine Your Future” education classes that will fit degree requirements regardless of major. * Take an assessment test. The career or guidance office may offer some of the standardized tools to help students find an area of concentration. * Do your research. If you’re considering a new major, talk to your advisor about what will be required of that new major, including classes and other coursework. You can also talk to students currently studying under that major. Knowing what to expect beforehand can make the decision-making process a little easier. * Talk to the dean. Many colleges and universities have deans or advisors in charge of students in certain majors. They will know the courses required for a degree. Switching majors may involve taking or re-tak-

ing some courses that will fit with the new major. It may also mean that some courses that were taken cannot be applied to the new major. This can result in having to take more classes one semester or taking an extra semester to graduate. * Consider finances. Taking different classes or stretching out your college career an additional semester might cost more money. Be sure that the finances are there, whether personally provided or funded through financial aid. * Assess whether your major truly matters. Many liberal arts or general studies majors are applicable in many fields. Therefore, switching majors may not even be necessary. Think about continuing with a current major and then concentrate or minor in something more specific.

Apple Valleybased CitiLink Communications bought out Nextera Communications now has largest fixed wireless service in state BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Apple Valley-based CitiLink Communications was purchased by Nextera Communications earlier this month. Nextera is a wireless telecommunications provider specializing in providing businesses with Internet and telephone service. Nextera offers local telephone service, long distance, service, T-1, DSL, voice over Internet and wireless Internet to businesses throughout the state. With the acquisition of CitiLink, Nextera now has the largest fixed wireless service in the state, said Nextera Marketing Manager Amanda MacDonald. “It was a good fit for us,” said MacDonald. Nextera Communications – based out of Brainerd with offices in Minnetonka, St. Cloud and Duluth – uses towers instead of underground cables for its fixed wireless networks. The company has towers throughout the metro area. “We have towers from Monticello to Ham Lake, to the Lakeville area, in Maple Plain Hanover, Minneapolis, Edina, Bloomington, St. Paul, Oakdale, Burnsville and Apple Valley,” said MacDonald. “Where the tower is located, the probability is pretty good that you could have our service there.”

Nextera’s long-range plans include expansion of its data wireless network to include more towers that provide the combination of voice and data service, said MacDonald. The CitiLink acquisition will provide these services to the underserved communities within the southern metro area. MacDonald said the decision to purchase CitiLink was made in late 2010. “We were looking at expand down in the southern metro suburbs,” said Nextera President Greg Arvig. “It became kind of a natural fit. It gives us a metro-wide footprint.” Nextera’s wireless service is not cellular, which is a common misconception, said MacDonald. Nextera markets itself to small and mid-sized businesses throughout the state, MacDonald said. “Banks and healthcare services are two types of markets that we’re seeing a trend with those businesses using our services,” she said. MacDonald said the company offers primary service, as well as a backup service to its business clients. “For backup, there’s a separate connection or path,” MacDonald said. “If something happens to the primary connection, we can route all their traffic to their wireless backup so they can keep their business running at all times.” One advantage Nextera now has due to the CitiLink acquisition is a greater bandwidth for its Wimax service, a combination of voice and data service. “It’s the next generation wireless service, which has higher capacity,” Arvig said. “It’s a higher quality service than previous technologies.”

In about 1074 A.D., eight years after defeating Harold II at the Battle of Hastings, King William I of England (William the Conqueror) issued a silver penny, about the size of a dime, bearing his portrait with a star on either side. In due time, English pennies became known as “stoerlings” from which the modern English currency of Sterling and the tem for fine silver is derived. Some have suggested that the use of stars on the coinage of this period might have represented celestial activity such as the appearance of Haley’s Comet in March of 1066 A.D., the year of the Conquest.

Pain - a direct message from the body BY ROXI REJALI – CONTRIBUTING WRITER Think of pain as the body’s earlywarning system. A sprained ankle, toothache or touching a hot stove causes acute or temporary pain. It’s a warning to get away from the pain source and protect the damaged body part. Most pain disappears after the injury has healed, but sometimes pain persists after the normal healing process ends. In some cases, medical exams or tests can’t identify the source of pain. Chronic pain, generally described as lasting more than three months, can disrupt every part of a person’s life. It can affect physical and mental health, ability to work, sleep and concentrate and perform everyday tasks. Twenty-six percent of American adults report that they have had pain that lasted more than a day, according to the 2006 study by the National Centers for Health Statistics. Almost 60 percent of adults ages 65 years and older reported experiencing pain lasting for one year or more.

Pain can be a symptom of underlying medical problems like diabetes, arthritis and cancer. But a growing number of physicians recognize chronic pain as a disease process in and of itself, according to the American Pain Foundation. Recent research suggests that persistent pain can create structural and chemical changes in the brain that keep pain signals active and can delay healing. Early and aggressive treatment may be the best way to limit the physical harm, which may damage nerves, blood vessels and organs and suppress the immune system, leaving the body vulnerable to infection. “Evidence continues to emerge— from the research lab to clinical practice—that the severity and persistence of pain can be modified through early intervention,” said foundation CEO Will Rowe. Many patients come to the MAPS Medical Pain Clinics two years after the onset of their pain symptoms, said Dr. David Schultz, the clinic’s medical director. MAPS has 10 clinic locations,

including Shakopee and Woodbury. About half of patients have back or neck pain and most are referred by family doctors or other medical specialists, Schultz said. In most cases, painkillers and physical therapy prescribed by physicians have provided little relief, he said. As a result, many are suffering from depression and anxiety that may affect work, family and personal relationships. More than half of clinic patients are already taking daily doses of powerful painkillers, including morphine, Vicodin or OxyContin, Schultz said. “They may work, but they have a dark side to them too,” he said of the opioids. “They’re powerful analgesics, but they don’t really do anything to treat the underlying pain problem. They simply change your perspective on it.” The drugs can also be addictive. Most patients benefit from the MAPS clinics’ multidisciplinary treatment approach, which treats physical and psychological symptoms, Schultz said. Therapies include trigger-point injections of local anesthetic or steroid med-

ications into tender or painful areas of muscle or tissues or nerve blocks, injections of nerve-numbing medication. Other options are implantable neurostimulators to block pain signals or spinal drug pumps to deliver painrelieving medication. Physical therapy can help provide long-term pain relief, improving a patient’s ability to perform everyday activities and prevent re-injury. Behavioral health programs can help patients unravel the psychological and emotional sources of their pain and learn coping and management skills. The goal is pain reduction and improved function for the patient, Schultz said. “Sometimes we can get rid of the pain and it doesn’t come back, but that’s usually not the case,” he said. “More often, we’re dealing with a chronic condition that’s manageable but not curable.” For more information, go to cdc.gov/nchs, painfoundation.org or painsphysicians.com.

Pain Management

A healthy diet is key to a healthy heart A healthy diet and lifestyle are your best weapons to fight cardiovascular disease. It’s not as hard as you may think! Remember, it’s the overall pattern of your choices that counts. Make the simple steps below part of your life for longterm benefits to your health and your heart. Use up at least as many calories as you take in. Start by knowing how many calories you should be eating and drinking to maintain your weight. Don’t eat more calories than you know you can burn up every day. Increase the amount and intensity of your physical activity to match the number of calories you take in. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week or — best of all — at least 30 minutes every day. Regular physical activity can help you maintain your weight, keep off weight that you lose and help you reach physical and cardiovascular fitness. If you can’t do at least 30 minutes at one time, you can add up 10-minute sessions throughout the day. Eat a variety of nutritious foods from all the food groups. You may be eating plenty of food, but your body may not be getting the nutrients it needs to be healthy. Nutrient-rich foods have vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients but are lower in calories. To get the nutrients you need, choose foods like vegetables, fruits, whole-grain products and fat-free or low-fat dairy products most often. • Vegetables and fruits are high in vitamins, minerals and fiber — and they’re low in calories. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables may help you control your weight and your blood pressure. • Unrefined whole-grain foods contain fiber that can help lower your blood cholesterol and help you feel full, which may help you manage your weight. • Eat fish at least twice a week. Recent research shows that eating oily fish containing omega-3 fatty acids (for example, salmon, trout, and herring)

may help lower your risk of death from coronary artery disease. Eat less of the nutrient-poor foods. The right number of calories to eat each day is based on your age and physical activity level and whether you’re trying to gain, lose or maintain your weight. You could use your daily allotment of calories on a few high-calorie foods and beverages, but you probably wouldn’t get the nutrients your body needs to be healthy. Limit foods and beverages high in calories but low in nutrients, and limit how much saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium. Read labels carefully — the Nutrition Facts panel will tell you how much of those nutrients each food or beverage contains. As you make daily food choices, base your eating pattern on these recommendations: • Choose lean meats and poultry without skin and prepare them without added saturated and trans fat. • Select fat-free, 1 percent fat, and low-fat dairy products. • Cut back on foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils to reduce trans fat in your diet. • Cut back on foods high in dietary cholesterol. Aim to eat less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol each day. • Cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars. • Choose and prepare foods with little or no salt. Aim to eat less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day. • If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. That means one drink per day if you’re a woman and two drinks per day if you’re a man. • Follow the American Heart Association recommendations when you eat out, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Also, don’t smoke tobacco — and stay away from tobacco smoke. For more information on the American Heart Association Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations, visit www.heart.org.

In today’s age of growing concern over taking medication or relying on surgery for the relief of pain comes the drug-free natural path of pain management: Chiropractic. During the 7+ years of education D.C.’s have learned to utilize manipulation of the spine to allow the body to heal itself. By adjusting the spine we alleviate pressure on the spinal cord and nerves that exit it to reduce and eliminate dysfunction of glands, organ systems, and soft tissues that medication may not have been able to. Firstly, every D.C. has their method of manipulation and their theory on its effect on the body. The key is balance. The muscles of the spine and skeleton must be in sync with one another to allow our body’s normal natural movement through the use of heat and electro stimulation. If appropriate, once the muscles have been “reset” then trigger point therapy is used to reduce the last of the noxious metabolic waste and spasm thus setting the joint up for a longer lasting and thorough manipulation. Secondly, at this time a decision to use adjunctive therapy is determined. This includes ice, Ultrasound, Cold Laser, highly advanced stretching and muscle stripping techniques, and flexion-distraction. Nutrition is paramount. Foods that irritate or slow repair and

recovery should be eliminated at this time. Examples would be red meat, eggs, dairy, caffeinated beverages, and anything that contains msg and gluten. The body is working hard enough, we need not contribute to its load by having it break these types of inflammatory causing foods or ingredients down. Wise choices include fruits and vegetables (preferably organic), herbs, seasonings and low fat seeds and nuts. Some have shown great results using Bromelain, Feverfew, Fennel, Valerian Root, and Passion Flower. To find the right combination, you should however consult with your doctor for your personalized condition. Lastly, careful attention must be paid to diagnose the phase of injury and healing to optimize recovery and ultimate rehabilitation back to pre-injury status. There are very specific protocols that should be followed to allow this to happen. If a particular joint segment is left restricted from normal movement, making the joint stiff or hypomobile, this will likely decrease recovery potential, increase the rate of dehydration and degeneration, and may lead to possible permanent injury or disability. So, the need for proper assessment and treatment not only address today’s pain, but future pain as well.

The city of Apple Valley now offers 3 percent financing to qualified homeowners of single-family owner-occupied residences. Designed to address the needs of homeowners prior to the winter, this program offers 3 percent financing for many energy efficiency upgrades including air sealing, insulation and high efficiency heating systems. Insufficient insulation is the main cause of ice dams, which created huge damage to homes across Minnesota last year. It costs approximately $2,000 to $3,000 to have the average home’s attic air sealed and insulated, which is about $60 per month for five years at 3 percent interest. Apple Valley offers up to a $7,500 loan amount for this program with a maximum income limit of 80 percent of the AMI. For example, the income limit for a household of four is $66,160. This program is available for a limited time on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are depleted or Dec. 31, whichever is first. Info: ceeloans.org

Eagan realtor going above and beyond Specializes in helping clients deal with host of issues unrelated to job description BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS After experiencing the death of her parents and the ensuing burden of preparing their home for sale, one Eagan realtor has expanded her duties to assist others going through similar situations. Anne Saatela, a realtor with Keller Williams Integrity Realty in Eagan, knows all too well the burden associated with the loss of two parents, and the subsequent preparation and sale of their home, but what she was not expecting at the time was how her experience would transform her future. In 2000, Saatela was working a corporate job in information technology, enjoying it all. But when her father passed away at the age of 70 and her mother also passed away 11 months later at the same age, Saatela became overwhelmed. “It was not a fun time at all,” she said, adding that she was their informal caregiver as well as for her sister, who underwent heart transplant surgery around the same time.

“All that was left was me and my brother,” she said. “My brother is 10 years older, and he lives on the East Coast.” Trying to juggle her job and what to do with her parents’ house, which was in Eau Claire, Wis., took a lot of time and had its own cost, according to Saatela. “Through this whole thing, I couldn’t grieve,” she said. “I couldn’t help my kids through the grieving process because we had to deal with this, and I was the only one who was physically there.” For Saatela, the experience was draining and to her simply did not seem fair. “I just thought, when all was said and done, ‘This is not fair,’” she said. “You’re a caregiver for your family and for your parents. You go through this loss and then you are stuck with this house.” It was at this time Saatela had a revelation with regard to how such situations should be handled. “What should happen is you should just get your sentimental stuff that you want out of the house and then turn to

somebody and say, ‘It’s your deal. You go for it. Now you can take care of it. I’m done,’” she said. “At the end of 2005, I decided to just totally turn my life upside down. I went out at got my real estate license.” The marked the beginning of a new journey in Saatela’s life, one she described as a “calling” and as a “ministry.” Saatela spent the next few years building a base of contacts, people who she trusts and works with to this day. “I spent all these years going around talking to social workers, to lawyers, to all kinds of people … about what I do,” she said. “I have over 750 people in my database. I have a lot of people who do a lot of things for seniors.” Saatela arranges estate sales, after individuals remove all sentimental items, and she arranges for any work needed on a home, such as removing wallpaper, painting, replacing a roof, and coordinating truth in housing inspections. Of course, the work is not free, but because of Saatela’s careful selection

of contacts, those in her database are very reasonably priced, Saatela said. “I do not mark it up,” she said. “I do not charge for any of the coordination services. That’s why I can tell you no other realtor does this because they all think I’m crazy.” Edina resident Joan Shasky is one of Saatela’s past clients who lost both parents within a week of each other. Shasky got Saatela’s name from an attorney involved in her parents’ estate. She then turned to Saatela for help. “That’s where [Saatela] steps in and says, ‘This will not be a problem,’” Shasky said, adding that Saatela provided her with a long list of contacts to call for help her with an estate sale and more. “I had a trip planned and had to be out of town for the weekend,” Shasky said of the estate sale. “I came back home, drove from the airport and walked into my parents’ house. All was gone. It was immaculate, and I didn’t have to do anything.” Of all who Shasky contracted with for work on her parents’ house, she said, “They were reasonably priced.” Shasky added that Saatela is very particular about whom she does business with and that they were ethical and moral people. “It was wonderful,” she said of her experience with Saatela. “I would highly recommend her to anyone in that situation. She just fills in.”

EDUCATION Eagan resident Gary Huusko to fill ISD 196 School Board vacancy At it’s Oct. 27, the District 196 School Board appointed Eagan resident Gary Huusko to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Kevin Sampers this past August, according to a District 196 news release. Huusko was one of seven applicants who were interviewed by the board during the public meeting. Huusko was up for appointment along with Jeannette Appold of Rosemount, Nancy Dickey of Apple Valley, Betty Fedde of Eagan, Donna Gibbons of Apple Valley, Roger New of

Eagan, and Lisa Nemer Noah of Eagan. Immediately following the panelstyle interviews, each board member listed their top three choices and Huusko received the majority of the first-choice selections on the first ballot. Huusko has been an attorney for the past 28 years and has practiced patent law at Severson, Sheldon, Dougherty & Molenda in Apple Valley since 2003. He is married and has two children, a daughter who graduated from Eagan High School in 2010 and a son who is currently a sophomore at Eagan High. Huusko has volunteered at his children’s schools, the district, the city of Eagan and in a variety of civic organizations and foundations.

Huusko will take the oath of office at the board’s Nov. 14 meeting and will serve the remainder of Sampers’ term, which runs until Jan. 6, 2014. Sampers, who served on the board for 18 years, announced his retirement in August in order to spend more time with the business he started earlier this year. Info: district196.org

Gweh sparks Eastview’s run to state semifinals Junior forward scores twice in first-round victory at Class AA tourney

Lightning wins on the road at Rosemount

BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Dynamic, creative, explosive – all of those describe Eastview boys soccer player Mathew Gweh. He’d like it if “team-oriented” could be included somewhere in there, too. Despite being a marked man since early in the 2011 season, Gweh leads the No. 1-ranked Lightning with 25 goals in 20 games. He scored twice Oct. 27 as Eastview (19-0-1) defeated Rochester Mayo 2-1 in the state Class AA quarterfinals in Cottage Grove. Eastview’s motto is “We are 11,” and after the Mayo game, Gweh tried to deflect attention from himself and onto his team. “I didn’t do it by myself,” he said. “We try to play as a team, try to play for each other, and I think we’re doing that.” Gweh scored 8 minutes, 6 seconds into the game off a feed from Pierce Erickson and struck again about 20 minutes later with Jake Opheim assisting. Mayo scored with 8:26 remaining. In the final two minutes Eastview struggled to clear the ball from in front of its goal following a Mayo corner kick. “When I saw one of those kicks go, I thought, ‘Wow, they’re going to tie the game,’” Gweh said. But the Lightning survived and moved on to the Metrodome for the first time. Eastview played Minneapolis Southwest, last year’s Class AA runner-up, in a semifinal game Nov. 1. The winner plays Eden Prairie or Maple Grove in the championship game at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, also at the Metrodome. SOCCER: TO PAGE 28

When Eastview lost to Rosemount several weeks ago, coach Kelly Sherwin described his team as its own worst enemy, committing turnovers from which the Lightning couldn’t recover. Eastview got another chance to play the Irish in the Class 5A, Section 3 playoffs, and the result was vastly different. The Lightning played a nearly error-free game, winning 49-13 on Oct. 29 and earning a spot in the section championship game. Eastview (5-5) will play at Prior Lake (7-3) in the section final at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4. The winner faces the Section 2 champion (Mounds View or TotinoGrace) in the state Class 5A quarterfinals Nov. 11 at the Metrodome. Running backs Eric Krupke and LeAndre Kennedy scored three touchdowns each for Eastview. Quarterback Ryan Reger completed all seven passes he attempted for 136 yards, and Henry McIsaac completed one pass for 45 yards. Two touchdown runs by Kennedy (5 and 12 yards) and one from Krupke (6 yards) put Eastview up 21-0 in the second quarter. Krupke ran for two more scores in the third quarter as the Lightning’s lead grew to 35-7. Kennedy added a touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The one touchdown neither Krupke nor Kennedy scored was a 47-yard pass from Reger to Adam Moorse. The top-seeded Irish (5-4) scored in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Andy FOOTBALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Irish split two 4-3 matches, take 4th in state tennis BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Football FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Gustafson. Rosemount’s other touchdown came in the third quarter on a 30-yard pass from Nate Lemoine to Salih Mohamed. Moorse caught four passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Sean Kalinowski had five catches for 76 yards for Rosemount. Quarterback Nate Lemoine led the Irish in rushing with 52 yards. Eastview defeated Burnsville 14-7 in a first-round section game Oct. 25. Trailing 7-6 in the fourth quarter, the Lightning got in position to score with a 40-yard pass from Ryan Reger to Eric Krupke. Moments later, Krupke gave Eastview the lead on a 3-yard run. Reger also threw to Kenyon Phillips for a twopoint conversion. Burnsville proved to be a tough opponent under first-year head coach Tyler Krebs, formerly an Eastview assistant coach. The Blaze defeated the Lightning

36-29 during the regular season “With Tyler over there, he knows the strengths and weaknesses of our players, and he has a good idea of what we’re going to do,” Sherwin said. Reger threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Wesser in the second quarter. That cut Burnsville’s lead to 7-6, but the Lightning missed the conversion.

Eagan 63, Woodbury 29 Eagan’s 6-4 record might not be scary, but opponents probably aren’t happy to see the Wildcats’ offense take the field. Eagan scored 113 points in two Class 5A, Section 4 playoff games to reach the championship game, where the Wildcats will play undefeated (9-0) and No. 2-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at the University of St. Thomas. Wildcats quarterback Drew Bauer devastated Woodbury defense in the Oct. 29 section semifinals, accounting for 373 yards in total offense. He rushed 16 times for 214 yards and three touchdowns, the longest score covering 59 yards. Bauer also completed 13 of 18 passes for 159 yards and

One thing Rosemount can say about its trip to the state girls tennis tournament: The Irish made things interesting. Two of Rosemount’s three matches at the Class AA team competition – its firstround victory Oct. 25 over Brainerd and its Oct. 26 loss to Elk River for third place – were decided by 4-3 scores. The Irish’s run at state also included a 6-1 loss to eventual runner-up Rochester Mayo. Edina won its 15th consecutive Class AA title with a 5-2 victory over Mayo in the final at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center. Rosemount, making its second appearance at state in three years, finished 21-5. Rosemount coach Dana Beck used what she describes as her “singles-strong” lineup in the quarterfinals against Brainerd. It paid off as the Irish won three of the four singles matches in straight sets. Virginia Norder (No. 1 singles), Alison Baker (No. 2) and Kirsten Hoffmann (No. 4) were the winners. Rachel Hoffmann and Rachel Olson won in straight sets at third doubles for the Irish’s fourth point. All three of Brainerd’s victories also were in straight sets. Kirsten Hoffmann earned Rosemount’s point against Mayo, winning her fourth singles match 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). The only match against Mayo that went to three sets was Norder’s 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 10-5 loss to Kylie Boyer at first singles. With

two scores. Senior running back Michael Busch rushed for 121 yards. He had touchdown runs of 20 and 49 yards and also caught a 25-yard touchdown pass. Bauer threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Eric Woodcock. Nelson Marshall ran for a 3-yard score and Mitch Knutson returned an interception 38 yards for a defensive touchdown. Eagan, which has won four in a row and six of its last seven games, crushed Minneapolis South 50-0 in the section quarterfinals Oct. 25. While the Eagan defense held Minneapolis South to 89 yards, the Wildcats’ offense rolled through the Tigers. Busch rushed for 76 yards and scored four touchdowns. Marshall rushed 14 times for 100 yards and one score.

Eastview 14, Burnsville 7 Eastview held Burnsville to 62 yards of total offense in their Class 5A, Section 3 semifinal, but it wasn’t until late in the fourth quarter before the Lightning finally grabbed the lead in a Class 5A, Section 3

the team competition already decided, the third set of the Norder-Boyer match was shortened to a first-to-10-points tiebreaker. Rosemount’s Layna Mestad and Abby Kohagen prevailed 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in a threeset match at No. 1 doubles against Elk River. Baker and Kirsten Hoffmann won singles matches in straight sets. Three of Elk River’s four points in the third-place match came in three sets.

Individual tournament Norder, Eagan’s Danielle Donahue and twin sisters Elizaveta and Varvara Zelenina of Eagan competed in the individual portion of the state girls tennis tournament Oct. 27-28. Norder, a sophomore, defeated Natalie Phippen of Stillwater 6-1, 6-2 in a firstround Class AA singles match before losing to Kelsey Frechette of Rochester Century in the quarterfinals. Donahue, a junior, lost to Wayzata senior Lucia Solis in the first round of the singles tourney, sending the Eagan player to the consolation bracket. Donahue defeated Helen Klass-Warch of St. Paul Central 6-2, 6-2 before losing to Maddie Buxton of Eden Prairie in the consolation semifinals. The Zelenina sisters, both juniors, defeated Chanhassen’s Katie Mattson and Hayley Haakenstad 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the first round of the Class AA doubles tourney. They lost in straight sets to Rochester Mayo’s Kylie Boyer and Kate Rosenow in the quarterfinals.

quarterfinal game Oct. 25. Burnsville beat Eastview 36-29 in a regular-season game Oct. 7, but Blaze quarterback Dan Motl was injured in that game and missed the rest of the season. The Burnsville offense wasn’t the same without him. Burnsville scored on its first possession in the playoff game, with Jamond Bailey completing the drive on a 4-yard run. The Blaze finished 2-7 in its first season under first-year head coach Tyler Krebs.

Kennedy 28, Apple Valley 0 Apple Valley closed a 1-8 season with back-to-back losses to Bloomington Kennedy. The second of the two losses came in the Class 5A, Section 3 quarterfinals Oct. 25. Kennedy also defeated Apple Valley 3014 in the final week of the regular season. Apple Valley’s victory came in Week 7 when the Eagles trounced Bloomington Jefferson 27-6.

Soccer FROM PAGE 26 “My brother was in the all-star game [at the Metrodome] a few years ago, and I’ve wanted to play there ever since,” Gweh said. Gweh transferred to Eastview from St. Paul Como Park after his ninthgrade season. He could not play for the Lightning varsity last year because of Minnesota State High School League transfer rules. Eastview is “a really good school, and I wanted to go to a good school,” he said. He practiced with the Lightning last season and made an immediate impact once he was eligible to play. Gweh scored at least one goal in 16 of Eastview’s first 20 matches and is the leading goal-scorer among Class AA players. Additionally, he is second on his team with eight assists. “He’s incredibly fast,” Eastview coach Scott Gustafson said, “and those were two really, really good goals” against Mayo. Gweh and teammates Mike Bonderud (defender) and Sam Ruelas (goalkeeper) were named to the Class AA All-State team. All three are jun-

iors. All three also hear the clock ticking if they intend to win a state high school championship. Eastview has six seniors, while four underclassmen – Gweh, Bonderud, Ruelas and sophomore goalkeeper Treston Kederer – are expected to forego their remaining high school eligibility to train full-time with the Minnesota Thunder Academy. Gweh said he and his teammates hoped to make some lasting memories this week because “it’s fun to represent your school.”

as the third seed, finished 13-3-4. In the first half, a shot by Eastview’s Taryn MacMillan was deflected by Centennial goalie Kirsti Lilja and hit the crossbar. In the second half the Lightning had two point-blank shots blocked by the Centennial defense. MacMillan was denied again in the

first overtime when her shot was cleared off the goal line by a Centennial defender. Leah Nesheim and Brianna Ismale scored for Eastview in the shootout. Lilja stopped shots by Paris Sanders and Katie Tharp, and MacMillan’s attempt slammed into the crossbar.

EV girls tripped in shootout Eastview’s girls team also wanted to make it to the Metrodome, but the Lightning couldn’t find the back of the Centennial net during a Class AA quarterfinal game Oct. 28. Eastview had the edge in possession time and had more quality scoring chances, but the game remained scoreless for 100 minutes. That sent it to a shootout, where Centennial converted three of its penalty kicks to the Lightning’s two for a 1-0 victory. Centennial moved on to play Burnsville in the Class AA semifinals Oct. 31 at the Metrodome. Eastview, which went into the state tournament

Blaze girls make it to the Metrodome Soccer team edges Woodbury in state quarterfinals BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Burnsville has had to readjust its goals as the girls soccer season sped toward a conclusion. The Blaze is a relatively young team, but coach John Soderholm kept telling the players they had the potential to reach the state tournament. After Burnsville did that, the players started thinking it would be nice to go to the Metrodome, which they could do if they won their state quarterfinal game. Now that they earned their trip to the dome … do they dare dream about the state championship? “The first goal was to win the section, but that seemed like a dream,” Blaze goalkeeper Meghann Rudolph said. “This is a great feeling, and we want to take it as far as we can.” Unseeded Burnsville (16-4) defeated No. 2-seeded Woodbury 1-0 in a Class AA quarterfinal game Oct. 29 on Abby Soderholm’s goal in the 49th minute on a free kick. Burnsville, which last went to state 15 years ago, played Centennial in a semifinal match Oct. 31 at the Metrodome, with the winner facing Lakeville North or Wayzata in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3. “A lot of our girls are juniors and sophomores, but I made it clear to them I expected them to win the section,” John Soderholm said. “We were good enough. And then [against Woodbury], we played well against a very good team.” Burnsville had to survive several Woodbury scoring threats in the first half of the state quarterfinal game in Cottage Grove. Early in the second half, Abby Soderholm, the coach’s niece, lined up a free kick from about 30 yards away. She struck it perfectly. The ball barely cleared the outstretched hand of Woodbury goalie Casey White and snuck just below the crossbar. “I was just trying to get it to the front of the goal,” said Abby Soderholm, who hit the crossbar on a free kick from almost the identical spot later in the

second half. Rudolph sported a shiner after being knocked in the head while sorting through heavy traffic in front of the Blaze goal. “One of their shots was pretty scary,” Rudolph said. “One of their players took a shot toward the far post. I chased it, and fortunately it went just wide.” After Woodbury had success going wide against the Burnsville defense in the first half, John Soderholm said the Blaze tried to confine play to one side of the field as much as possible. The result, said Abby Soderholm, was “we closed up their passing lanes and blocked more shots.” The Burnsville-Centennial state semifinal game was a rematch of the teams’ regular-season opener Aug. 25, which Centennial won 5-3. Centennial, 17-1-2 going into the Oct. 31 game, defeated Eastview 1-0 in a shootout in its Class AA quarterfinal Oct. 28.

A&J Painting is a family owned and operated business. A&J Painting is a family owned and operated business that was started 15 years ago with my sons Andrew, Jeremiah, and David. In today’s economic climate we have maintained a healthy business due to our professional approach and work ethic that carries the highest standards of quality for every job. We have thrived over the years because of the volume of callbacks and customer referrals from previously contracted jobs. No contract is too big or too small for our company. A&J Painting operates as a licensed and insured painting company that offers trained and skilled (journeyman) employee’s to paint and remodel your home or business. All of our employee’s have been with the company for several years and each has been trained to the highest standards. We take pride in the honesty, integrity, and character of the young men we have employed. My son Andrew is a highly skilled and trained carpenter. He also does taping, knock down ceilings, tiling, installs plumbing, lighting fixtures, countertops and offers many types of custom carpentry. Andrew operates a professional spray booth off site for finishes on cabinetry and furniture. His current focus is on remodeling, updating, and modernizing

homes and businesses. Andrew’s perfectionist approach to every job and the extent of his skill set have made him one of the best craftsman in the Twin Cities. My other two sons run the painting end of the business and are also professionally trained Artists. Jeremiah attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and later studied under the mentorship of the nationally renowned portrait and fresco painter Mark Balma. David similarly was accepted into a full time master apprenticeship program at the young age of 16 at the highly respected Atelier Lack Studio. They followed in the family tradition of mastering a professional craft and skill which they have brought to our company. Between the two they offer 25 years of experience painting interior and exterior homes in the metro area with our family business. A&J Painting takes great pride in our ability to make a true and lasting impression on you. I can’t tell you how many letters and calls I have received over the years from customers who just wanted to share with me what a great job we did. We hope to have the opportunity to do so with you as well. We are only a call or e-mail away to offer you a free estimate of our professional services.
