Crashed biplane purchased on eBay turns out to have unique World War II connection BY JOSEPH PALMERSHEIM SUN NEWSPAPERS Apple Valley native Matt Quy is all about airplanes. The 35-year-old U.S. Air Force captain, who now lives in Sacramento, is currently on a cross-country flight to deliver his PT-13 Stearman biplane to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. After restoring the plane, an Air Force researcher discovered that it had been used to train some of the first ‘Hopefully, African-American fighter and bomber pilots during World War II. there are The rare airplane will become part of the museum’s Tuskegee Airmen some young kids exhibit. The long flight plan leading to Washington, D.C., all started at the end of a grass runway in Apple Valley. Quy first became intrigued by airplanes while growing up near local aviation legend Chuck Doyle. Doyle used to fly his turquoise-and-white biplane right over the Quy’s house, sometimes filling the neighborhood with skywriting smoke. “His engine noise would shake the house,” Quy remembered. “It was so awesome and powerful and beautiful.” “Even when Matt was three, some of his first words were when he was trying to point up and say, ‘airplane,’” said his mother, Joyce Quy of Apple Valley. Six years ago, Quy fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning a biplane like the one Chuck Doyle flew over BIPLANE: TO PAGE 8

Whether its called National Night Out or Night to Unite, the concept of getting to know your neighbors law enforcement personnel transcends any name. Local police, fire and city officials are encouraging residents to attend the annual unity events Tuesday, Aug. 2, as a way for residents to get to know their neighbors and local emergency personnel, and to support crime prevention efforts in their communities.
Apple Valley Apple Valley Police Chief Scott Johnson said the city of has more than 80 neighborhood registrations. The chief, Apple Valley Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland, McGruff the Crime Dog and other representatives from the police department, fire department and the city council will be attending registered parties throughout the night. “It’s not unusual for these to take place in someone’s front yard,” Johnson said. “We try to have somebody stop by each of them, but that is not always possible.”
Johnson elaborated on the importance and purpose of Night to Unite, saying it allows all neighbors to become familiar not only with one another, but also who should and should not be in a neighborhood. “It’s not like it was years ago when people sat on their front porch to stay cool,” the chief said, referring to how the times have changed, and how such events as Night to Unite are needed and necessary. As an example, Johnson said if you know your neighbor is on vacation, you know to keep an eye out on his or her property for strange or unusual cars or people. “We just encourage people to get out and get to know their neighbors,” Johnson said.
Eagan Eagan’s National Night Out will run 5:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at various residences throughout the city. As of July 22, the city had 171 neighborhood parties registered with 8,00015,000 residents expected to participate. Police, fire, and city officials will only be able to attend the first 150 registered parties, however. The first 124 registered parties will receive a family four-pack of Twins tickets to use as a door prize for all who attend the neighborhood parties. UNITY EVENTS: TO PAGE 14

Hastings Lewis House The Lewis House in Hastings is now open. The Sun-Current wrote an article about the possible impact to both Lewis House shelters in a recent edition. Two events occurred to allow the shelter reopen. Both the state Attorney General’s office and the Governor’s office recommendations to include funding for violence prevention as an essential part of government were recently approved. As a result, state funding has resumed for both the Eagan and Hastings shelter locations. 360 Communities, the nonprofit that runs the Lewis Houses, receives $1.2 million annual from the state to run the shelters. Second, the state legislature and Gov. Mark Dayton reached a budget agreement to end the government shutdown. The Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women and Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault helped convince the Gov. Dayton and the courts that services for battered women were essential functions of government. For more information about 360 Communities or the Lewis Houses, go to 360Communities.org.

Fishing for connections, both in life and on the waters I never made this connection until recently. Thinking about the various places I’ve lived, there aren’t many similarities that bind them together. A constant in each state I have called home, however, are the memories I’ve made fishing in their ponds, rivers and lakes. I lived in Ohio until I was seven years old. My family moved to Wisconsin right before I entered first grade, and I lived there until 2008 after I graduated from UW-Eau Claire. I’ve now lived in the Twin Cities metro area for more than three years. I like it here. Aside from rush hour traffic, closed liquor stores on Sundays and indoor football, the state has plenty things going for it. One of those things is the state’s natural beauty, and with it, the fishing options. In Ohio, I mastered the art of pond pier fishing. Bobber? Check. Worm? Check. Snoopy fishing pole? Of course. I was an angler to be reckoned with. I hold no Ohio state fishing records, but reeling in bluegill

after bluegill bigger than my face might have been the most exciting thing in my life up to that point. After moving to Appleton, Wis., I mastered the art of river fishing. My dad used to tell my sister and I fishing stories from his childhood growing up in Appleton minutes from the Fox River. The way he told it, the perch and bullhead practically begged him to catch as many of them as possible. Moving to his hometown gave me the chance to carve out my own Fox River fishing history. My dad’s youngest brother, my Uncle Mark, is a Fox River fishing legend. I’ve seen him call smallmouth bass onto his nightcrawler and attempt to do the same with muskies, though he never caught one while I was
there. Fishing with him as a kid was endless fun, even if I did lose one or more of his lures. We always released what we caught, even if they were large enough to keep. The banks of the Fox River are dotted with paper factories and it has been polluted for decades. One of my favorite fishing spots on that river was under a bridge near one of those paper factories. I later found a pencil sketch my dad drew of that place when I went through his art collection last year after he died. I had no idea he was drawing while I fishing at that time. I was too busy reeling in a smallmouth or listening to Bob Uecker on the radio attempt to make a lousy Brewers game interesting, most likely. Since moving to Minnesota, I have not mastered, but I have grown to appreciate lake fishing. My first experience on one of the state’s 10,000 lakes was my best to date. My in-laws have a lake home in the middle part of the state.
Their lake is small enough that it has no public access, but large enough for decent-sized fish to thrive. Right before dusk three years ago, my father-in-law, wife, and I found the lake’s crappie hole. We nailed crappie after crappie – “slabbers” as they are called here. We caught enough regulation size fish to return to shore proud of our haul. The next day, my mother-inlaw fried the fish and served them for dinner. This was the first time I actually took pleasure in eating fresh fish. I’ve fished the lake since then, but not with the same epic results. Closer to home, I recently discovered Eagle Lake Regional Park in Maple Grove. It has a fishing pier on one of its lakes, much like the pier I spent several summer evenings in Ohio more than two decades ago. I’ve only spent two hours fishing at this park, and all I have to show for it are photographs of a perch and bluegill no bigger than my face. Some things never change.
Insert ‘Good Night and Good Luck’ reference here, and adios Next week’s issue of the SunCurrent will be the last to bear any of my fingerprints on it. My last day here is Friday, July 29. I am leaving this newspaper after five years to pursue other interests. When I first started here in 2006, I was a young writer fresh from his delayed graduation from college. Now, I am a married father of two girls. I’m glad I’ve been able to share the journey along the way. One of my goals in life was to be an award-winning reporter who got to cover his hometown, and thanks to this newspaper, I’ve been able to achieve both. I’ve had the privilege of being able to write about Apple

Valley, and spend time working in a place with so many memories. I’ve been welcomed into homes as a stranger and left as a friend. I’ve had front-row seats to the annual peaceful transitions of power that contribute to this country’s greatness. I’ve also had the honor of earning space on this opinion page, and that’s where the most joy from this job has
come from. I’ve grown up on these pages, developing from a wet-behind-the-ears reporter to a married managing editor with two small children. I’ve been honored to share the journey along the way. Thank you to everyone who shared with me, responded to what I wrote and even called me to complain. This newspaper would not have been what it is without the people who read it, and care about their communities. I am leaving this newspaper in the capable hands of Dan Callahan, one of Sun’s newest editors. In the short time that I have known him, Dan has become my friend,
and I am truly impressed by his professional dedication and wisdom. I know you will be, too. In case anyone is interested, I do not plan on ceasing my column work. My blog, PostPunk Dad, can be found at thepostpunkdad.wordpress.com (note there is no hyphen in the real address), and continues in much the same vein as my column in this paper. Please stop by and have a look sometime. In closing, I would like to thank you all for helping one man to live the dream. My job at Sun has given me a front row seat to the first draft of history, and for that, I am forever grateful.

Biplane FROM PAGE 1 his house all those years ago. It was an expensive dream, but Chuck Doyle Jr., his aviation inspiration’s son, told him to “buy it and make it work.” After consulting with his wife, Tina, Quy began a search for fixer-uppers, and purchased a damaged PT-13 Stearman biplane on eBay. “It had been damaged in accident, and the pilot had put it down on a dirt road,” Quy said. “It had all kinds of damage to wings, fuselage and prop. Both of the landing gear axles were bent. It was bought as a wreck. At time, I was living on a Louisiana Air Force base, and had a friend in Houston who rebuilt these. We worked on it during the weekends, and over three years, got it rebuilt.” While many of the 10,300 PT-13 Stearmans built had a role in training pilots during World War II, Quy’s Stearman had an additional claim to fame – one which became apparent after its pilot submitted the serial number to historians at Maxwell Air Force base. “The guy called me, and asked if I was sitting down,” Quy said. “He said that as far as his documentation was concerned, it was the only Stearman

[used to train Tuskegee airmen] that was still flying. My wife and I planned on keeping this flying by doing sightseeing rides, but when I found the history, I knew it was pretty special. I’d met Tuskegee Airmen at the South St. Paul Airport, and knew we had something special.” The Tuskegee Airmen, so named because they trained at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, were the first African-American pilots trained by the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. The American military was still racially segregated at the time, and the men in the 332nd Fighter Group and 477th Bombardment Group were kept apart from their white peers. While the bombardment group never served in combat, the 332nd Fighter Group served in the European theatre with honor. According to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force: “The 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Medium Bombardment Group proved themselves equal to white fliers and support troops. They disproved assumptions that African-Americans were unsuited to the rigors of serving in a highly technical combat arm such as the USAAF. But despite proving themselves, black airmen still were segregated. The Tuskegee experiment made it obvious to many leaders, President Harry S.
Truman in particular, that segregation by race in the military – in addition to being morally wrong – was simply inefficient and should be ended.” During the war, 992 Tuskegee Airmen were trained, and 450 were sent overseas. By the time the conflict ended, the group had earned the Distinguished Unit Citation, shot down 122 enemy aircraft, and lost fewer than 25 bombers on escort missions. More than 150 of the pilots were killed in combat or in accidents, according to the Air Force museum. Quy has captured some of this history not only with his restored airplane, but also in the growing collection of Tuskegee Airmen autographs on the interior of the Stearman’s baggage compartment door. To date, 34 signatures have been collected. “Our first event was at the Reno Air Races in 2008, and there were four Tuskegee Airmen out there,” Quy said. “We had these signature cards they were all signing, and I thought, ‘They should sign the airplane. It’s something we can travel with, and whenever we meet up with more, we’ll have them sign it.’ It’s like having a favorite baseball player signing a ball you caught at the game.”
yellow wings-blue fuselage scheme common to training aircraft during World War II, has a 220-horsepower Lycoming engine and a maximum speed of 125 mph. Quy said his wife Tina, a Lake City native, was “the backbone of the project,” and that every penny she’s made since graduating from college has gone into the plane. He describes flying the machine as “like flying a Harley.” “It’s the ultimate freedom,” he said. “Especially living here, where we are free to fly around and go anywhere you want. I love going through bluff country and not having anything in your way. It’s a magic carpet ride, I guess.” As part of the agreement with the Smithsonian, Quy will be taking to the skies in another Stearman the museum agreed to provide him with. It needs work, and is “in about 40 pieces” at the moment, but Quy has plans to turn it into a “flying veterans tribute,” painted in the colors of the POW-MIA flag. “It’s quite an honor to hang out with my heroes, to be able to spend entire weekends with them,” he said. “When we were turning [the other Stearman] over, I asked what we could do that would be a good tribute. Right before we

What your age means to your money (NAPSI)—Age is more than just a number when it comes to financial planning. Starting early can help provide a leg up on a comfortable retirement and keep you prepared for life’s curve balls. This is particularly important for women, who live longer than men, are more likely to require long-term care services and take more time out from work to care for a loved one. Because of these financial realities, women need to start saving early, save more as they earn more and plan carefully. Here are a few smart moves: In Your 20s • Focus on living on a budget and making savings automatic. Set financial goals and identify what it will take to achieve them. Consider setting up an automatic transfer from your primary bank account to a dedicated savings account each month. Also, don’t miss an opportunity to enroll in your employer’s retirement plan, such as a 401(k) plan, and take advantage of matching contributions. In Your 30s • Set up an emergency fund to cover at least six months of living expenses. Identify a financial professional to help
you put a comprehensive financial plan in motion. In Your 40s • Help protect yourself and your family financially through appropriate insurance and estate- planning vehicles, including a will, power of attorney, living will and health care proxy. Consider maximizing retirement contributions, with your earnings likely at their peak. In Your 50s • Create a long-term care strategy and catch up on retirement savings. At age 50, you become eligible to make “catchup” or extra contributions to your IRA, 401(k) or similar retirement plan. In Your 60s • Know your Social Security benefit options. At age 62, you’re eligible to start receiving Social Security, but your benefits could be reduced by as much as 30 percent if you opt to get Social Security before your full retirement age. Manage your expenses and have a plan for how to draw down your savings. Update your estate plans. Starting a financial plan is smart, but it’s only a first step. Remember to regularly review your financial plan to make adjustments as life transitions occur.
Living longer without outliving your money The United States Census Bureau projects the average American’s life expectancy to be 78.3 years, the highest it’s ever been. Five years ago, the average life expectancy was just over 77 years and experts project it will continue to rise. With Americans living longer—and therefore facing many additional years in active retirement- financial planning has never been more critical. Experts recognize that not knowing
exactly how long you will live, however, makes it difficult to determine how much money will be needed to comfortably retire. Annuities can bridge the gap in a retirement planning strategy. “Traditionally, people underestimate how long they’ll live and overestimate the value of a large lump-sum balance sitting in a retirement Living Longer continues page 11

Social Security: Questions & Answers by Rhonda Whitenack and Jim Czechowicz, Public Affairs, Bloomington and St Paul Social Security offices Jim: It’s been three years since Social Security’s Retirement Benefit Estimator went online. Tens of thousands of Minnesotans have used this calculator. They even rate it as one of the best online services around, according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index*. What explains all that success? Rhonda: The Social Security Estimator is a personal, secure, and convenient financial planning tool that lets workers calculate how much they might receive in Social Security benefits when they retire. This calculator
uses your own lifetime earnings information on file at Social Security. You get an instant, personalized estimate of your future retirement benefits. The Estimator even gives you the opportunity to run different scenarios and “what if ” situations. For example, you can change the date you expect to retire or change expected future earnings to create and compare different retirement options. To use the Retirement Estimator, you must have enough Social Security credits to qualify for benefits and you cannot be receiving benefits currently. spouse may be entitled to receive? Rhonda: If you are eligible for both your own retirement benefit and for benefits as a spouse, we will always pay you benefits based on your record first. If your benefit as a spouse is higher than your retirement benefit, you will receive a combination of benefits equaling the higher spouse's benefits. A spouse generally receives one-half of the retired worker's full benefit unless the spouse begins collecting benefits before full retirement age. If the spouse begins collecting benefits before full retirement age, the amount of the spouse's benefit is reduced by a percentage based on the number of months before he or she reaches full retirement

age. For example, based on the full retirement age of 66, if a spouse begins collecting benefits: At age 65, the benefit amount would be about 46 percent of the retired worker's full benefit; At age 64, it would be about 42 percent; At age 63, 37.5 percent; and At age 62, 35 percent. However, if a spouse is taking care of a child who is either under age 16 or disabled and receives Social Security benefits on the same record, a spouse will get full benefits, regardless of age. account,” says Chris Littlefield, president and CEO of life insurance and annuity provider Aviva USA. “One way to avoid outliving your money is with an annuity that offers the benefit of guaranteed income for life.” Living Longer, Living Well Through financial planning, life insurance and retirement advisers encourage clients to define—to the best of their ability-future income needs. In addition, retirees should remember the benefit of taking a diversified approach. That is why many people nearing retirement are taking a hard look at, and incorporating annuities into, their retirement strategy. Annuities are a sound financial tool to ensure a level of income security, and help people avoid the potential of becoming a financial burden on their loved ones. A key attribute of an annuity is a consistent income stream to cover longterm expenses that may surface through the years. Knowing that a consistent cash flow is possible allows those near-
ing retirement to reduce the risk that misjudging their “magic number” could mean. It also provides a peace of mind, as many retirees seek to accurately estimate how much money they will need throughout their retirement. Littlefield notes that while annuities are not the “be all, end all” to retirement planning, they do add an element of stability to an otherwise unpredictable process. “With so many Americans having spent their entire life in the workforce, we have grown accustomed to a steady stream of income,” Littlefield said. “That is why many of our new customers are taking advantage of the lifetime income benefits in their annuities. With the right planning, it’s possible to keep this in place without dipping into your life savings and still have access to your annuity’s principal.” As every person’s financial situation is unique, choosing tools that provide lifetime income is a subject that should be discussed with a qualified financial adviser.
Benefits of hearing aids vary by type and degree of hearing loss, noise environment, accuracy of hearing test, and proper fit. This is a wonderful opportunity to determine if hearing help is available for your hearing loss while you evaluate your performance with this technology.

left for D.C., I was watching a History Channel production about [Vietnam-era prisoners of war], and they were showing sketches that one of the [captured] Navy pilots drew. I was so moved that I decided I wanted to do a tribute to them. The plane will look like a big POW-MIA flag, and we’ll do aerobatic routines.” Quy plans to start working on the new Stearman once his duties in Washington, D.C., are finished. He’s looking for sponsors, and is estimating that he can have the new plane flight-ready in a year and a half. Part of what motivates him on this project is his interest in World War II, but also his patriotism. He was flying for Sun Country Airlines when the 9/11 attacks happened, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in response. “The guys who defended me are all older now, and I felt I owed it to them,” he said. “Hopefully, there are some young kids I can inspire to go into the Air Force to defend me when I am an old fart.” Aviation inspiration seems to run in Quy’s family. Several uncles were mechanics with Northwest Airlines, and his sister, Andrea, flew in the backseat of an F-14 Tomcat in the U.S. Navy as a radar-intercept officer, or “RIO.” Andrea’s husband currently commands the Navy aggressor squadron, made famous in the movie “Top Gun.” “I’m not sure how we all ended up in aviation,” Quy said. “It was probably the excitement and thrill of being in the air. My parents were always patriotic, and it might be the combination of those two things. It’s hard to say, even though I’m living it.” Joyce Quy doesn’t seem surprised that her son ended up in aviation. The experience of Chuck Doyle’s biplane, combined with the uncles at Northwest, led him to solo three days after his 16th birthday as a Civil Air Patrol member. “It’s incredible to me that all along he’s had this desire to be in the clouds,” she said. “And believe me, he’s in the clouds, both figuratively and literally, when he’s flying.” Joyce said she is “immensely proud” that her son decided to share his historic airplane with the world rather than hang on to it for himself, and is also glad he’s sharing the story of the Tuskegee Airmen. Having flown in the Stearman three times, she understands its appeal to him. “You are literally up there, observing all of God’s beautiful creation, and you don’t have all the sound from the ground, the distractions – you just have this beautiful panorama,” she said. “I can see why he was drawn to it – it gets in your blood after a while.”

EDUCATION BRIEFS District 196 population As of June 1, the total population of Independent School District 196 dropped to 151,622, which represents a decrease of 821 people or about .5 percent over population figures from one year ago. The District 196 board approved the district’s 2011 certified census at its June 27 meeting. The census figures are submitted to the state demographer in June each year and are used to determine tax levies for funding community education programs in the district. District 196 is the fourth largest school district in the state, with total enrollment of approximately 27,500 students. It covers approximately 110 square miles and includes all or parts of the cities of Rosemount, Apple Valley, Eagan, Burnsville, Coates, Inver Grove Heights and Lakeville, as well as Empire and Vermillion townships. At 88 percent, District 196 has one of the highest “capture rates” of any school district in the state, according to former state demographer Hazel Reinhardt of Hazel Reinhardt Consulting, meaning that nearly nine of every 10 students who lives in District 196 attend District 196 schools.
Openings for District 196 Special Ed. council The District 196 Special Education Advisory Council has open positions for district staff and parents who have children with special needs. The council terms are for two years, beginning with the start of the 2011-12 school year this fall. Council members are allowed to serve consecutive terms and the deadline to apply is Sept. 1. The council has 20-25 members, including district parents, community representatives, students with disabilities and school staff. About half of the members are parents and parent advocates of diverse disability areas. The council is scheduled to meet five times during the 2011-12 school year. The council will meet 6-8 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: Sept. 13, Nov. 15, Jan. 10, March 13 and May 8. Those interested in being considered for membership on the Special Education Advisory Council must complete an application available at district196.org or by calling 651-423-7631. Unity events FROM PAGE 4 At the 2010 event, the Eagan Police Department helped sponsor a food drive and will do so again this year. “Last year we raised approximately 36,000 pounds of food in one day,” said Jill Ondrey, crime prevention specialist with the Eagan Police Department. “Our neighborhoods have been unbelievably generous. That amount of food was an incredible donation.” The Eagan Resource Center, Eagan Police Dept. and Minnesota Twins are sponsoring this year’s food drive. For every 50 pounds of food donated or enough money to buy 50 pounds of food, people will have one chance to receive signed Twins memorabilia, a four-pack of Twins tickets and game-day food vouchers. Ondrey said National Night Out provides a venue for residents and public safety officials to meet in a comfortable setting. She said this should help bring neighbors closer together and help foster healthy discussions between residents and police officials about suspicious activity in neighborhoods. “It makes people feel safer and brings

a sense of community by knowing who lives next door and who lives down the street,” Ondrey said. “We like it because it’s an opportunity to meet people when they’re not in a stressful situation.” Pat DiIoia, Eagan Fire Dept. deputy fire chief, said one party goes beyond the simple, barbecue get together. “There’s a neighborhood party that brings a band in and everything,” DiIoia said. “It’s a pretty big event there every year.” Members of the fire department will attend about 150 parties, DiIoia said. “We bring our engines and our fire trucks,” he said. “We have about 70 firefighters that will go out and visit with the community throughout the evening.” National Night Out accomplishes its goals of bringing neighbors together and encouraging dialogue between the city public safety departments and its residents, DiIoia said. “It’s great that the neighbors socialize and get to know each other,” DiIoia said. “For our department, it’s a communication tool. It makes us visual. We answer questions the community has for us.” Ondrey said members of the police department look forward to National Night Out each year. “It’s a great, fun atmosphere and helps builds those bridges between the

department and residents,” she said. “The great thing about Eagan is that it’s a very involved community.” “We’re available and accessible. That’s what we want people to know. You can say it at a council meeting, but it really takes getting out there and having direct contact, one-on-one with people to hear it,” he said. “We’re not so busy that we are unwilling to take your call and listen to it and react to it.” In conclusion, Arvidson said this year the city has partnered with another community group to help others. “We have partnered with 360 Communities,” he said. “We are trying to get all of our neighborhood groups to donate some non-perishable foods or gift cards so we can donate it to their food shelf.”

Goin’ to See the King: Apple Valley man seeking a ride to Graceland in Aug. Fan using Craigslist in his search for transport BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS One Apple Valley man is “All Shook Up” about his prospects of finding a person to rideshare to Graceland, but this doesn’t mean “It’s Now or Never.” Dennis LaMott, a 64-year-old Elvis enthusiast, recently updated his Craigslist posting with the hope of finding someone to share expenses for a nearly two-week road trip to Graceland for Elvis week, Aug. 10-16, but with only one response so far, LaMott is not quite sure the trip will happen. Sitting in the living room of his Apple Valley residence, the former tax preparer discussed his decades-long interest in the King, as well as his collection of more than 200 items of Elvis memorabilia: plates, clocks, lamps, shirts, ties, LPs, replica gold records, and more over his walls, tables, couch, chairs and floor plates. “There is a lot of stuff,” he said. “I’ve been a fan of his forever,” LaMott added he first saw Elvis perform on the Ed Sullivan Show, but he could not resist saying that he actually only saw him perform from the waist up.
LaMott has been to Graceland once before, 20 years ago with his late-wife, Mary. This visit, however, was not planned. Dennis and Mary were in Memphis during a stopover flight on their way to Kentucky for business. “I wanted to go to Graceland, but we had another flight to catch in an hour,” LaMott said, adding that he talked to the guy at the gate. “The gate attendant was from Minneapolis and allowed us to delay our flight. So we delayed our flight for three or four hours and took a cab to Graceland.” Surprisingly, LaMott’s Elvis memorabilia collection did not begin to grow until a few years ago, shortly after his wife of nearly 40 years passed away. LaMott said it was about this time that he really began collecting as a hobby. Soon, LaMott, who has dozens of copies of Elvis movies, found himself in an environment that afforded him the opportunity to expand his collection. “I’ve seen all of the movies before, but I bought some at the auction,” he said, referring to A New Day Auction in Lakeville, which recently moved to Cannon Falls. “Some of the LPs…I was collecting for some time, over 30 years, but I got a lot of stuff from that auction.”
Apple Valley resident Dennis LaMott recently posted a message on Craigslist to locate another person or couple to share expenses for a road trip to Graceland during Elvis Week, Aug. 10-16. To date, LaMott has only received one response with no follow up, leaving him wondering if he will be able to make the trip. (Photo by Michael Ricci • Sun Newspapers)

Elvis Fan FROM PREVIOUS PAGE LaMott met at the auction house a lot of new people with the same level of interest in the King. This made it easier for him to attend these more frequently and accumulate more items, one of which happens to be a replica driver license. Demonstrating his sense of humor, LaMott has jokingly used this item as a substitute. “Often times when people ask me for an ID, I give it to them, and sometimes they don’t even look at it,” he said. “One exception where they don’t take it humorously is at the airport gate.” His decision to attend Elvis week at
Graceland in mid-August “just kind of happened,” LaMott said, adding that his posting on Craigslist was to gauge any interest. “I’m not 100 percent sure that I’m going yet,” he said of the lack of interest so far. The one response he has received to date was from a person with an email address whose first part spelled the name of a legendary female actress, and the sender simply signed his or her name as J.J. LaMott has yet to hear back from this person. Those interested in obtaining more information can contact LaMott by sending an email to dennis.lamott@gmail.com.

The Thunder earned a spot in the state Legion tournament beginning Friday, July 29, in Eden Prairie. Despite its loss in the district final, Burnsville also will have a shot at the state championship. After losing to Eastview, the Cobras (29-7) beat Eagan 16-6 to earn one of the Third District’s two other state tourney spots. The final place went to Lakeville North, which was seeded 13th in the district tourney. North (17-12) won four of its five district games and defeated East Ridge 9-4 on July 23 for a state tourna-
The Burnsville-based Mizuno Northern Lights club volleyball program had another successful summer, including age-group championships in two national tournaments. Northern Lights’ 15-1 team won the 15-year-old Open Division championship at the U.S. Junior National Championships that concluded July 4 in Atlanta. The 15-1 team is made up of players from the metro area, including Lakeville North sophomore-to-be Abby Monson; Taylor Schile, who will be a sophomore at Eastview; and Alyssa Muelken, who attended Eagle Ridge Junior High in Savage last year and played volleyball for Burnsville High School. Monson, a libero, started for Lakeville North’s 2010 state high school Class 3A championship team. Schile is a defensive specialist and setter. Muelken is a middle hitter/blocker. Monson was named to the all-tournament team as was Kylee Zumach, who attends Buffalo High School. Lydia Dimke of Blaine High School was the Most Valuable Player of the 15-1 Open Division tournament. The Northern Lights 15-1 head coach is Walt Weaver, who coached 31 seasons at Apple Valley High School and is a member of the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Thunder downs Cobras 7-2 for district title BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Alimagnet Park in Burnsville has been a house of horrors for Eastview High School baseball teams, which have seen playoff hopes flicker and die on its fields. Flip the calendar pages to summer, though, and Eastview players feel right at home at Alimagnet. Eastview’s American Legion baseball team repeated at Third District champi-
on, defeating No. 1-ranked Burnsville 7-2 on July 23. The final rounds of the district tourney took place at Alimagnet Park, where the Thunder won the 2008 state Legion championship. So much for jinxes. Eastview (26-6) allowed seven runs in four district tournament games, displaying solid pitching and defense as well as annoying opponents with its blend of surprise bunts and situational hitting. “The thing that stood out was our defense,” Eastview coach Bob Klefsaas said. “In four games, we had two errors. That’s how you win baseball games.”

Valley United, Burnsville Fire teams win at USA Cup Cosmos gets revenge against Swedish rivals BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Teams from the Valley United and Burnsville Fire soccer clubs were among 11 from Minnesota to win top-level championship games at the USA Cup youth tournament in Blaine. For the Valley United Cosmos, it was a second chance, and they seized it. The Cosmos, an Under-19 Premier team, reached the championship game in the same age group at the USA Cup last summer, but lost to Rudbeckianska of Vasteras, Sweden. On July 23, the Cosmos found themselves in the same game against the same team. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half of a scoreless game a Cosmos player picked up his second yellow card of the game and was sent off.
Despite playing one man short, the Cosmos scored on a header by midfielder Max Rindels with less than four minutes remaining and made it stand up for a 1-0 victory. A year ago, the Swedish team defeated the Cosmos 4-1 for its fourth USA Cup divisional championship in five years. A number of the Cosmos players were on one or both of Apple Valley High School’s state Class AA championship teams in 2009 and 2010. The team also attracted some top players from neighboring communities. Rindels is a former Bloomington Jefferson player who now is on the University of Minnesota men’s club team. Rosemount High School graduate Brandon Wolf plays at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Torbjorn Morkeberg helped lead Lakeville North to the 2010 state tournament. Club Division at the AAU National Championships June 13-23 in Orlando, Fla. The team also was second in the 172 National Division at the Junior Olympic tournament. Players on the 17-2 team include setter/right-side hitter Allison Butler of Burnsville High School and outside hitter Maren Loe of Apple Valley. Both will be seniors in the fall. Kelley Wollak of Bloomington Jefferson was named MVP of the 17-2 Open Division tournament. Several local players were on the Northern Lights 16-1 team that took second in Open Division competition at the Junior Olympics and third at the AAU nationals. Setter/left-side hitter Alyssa Goehner, who will be a sophomore at Lakeville North, was named to the alltourney team at the Junior Olympics and the All-America team at the AAU nationals. Players on the 16-1 team also included middle/left-side hitter Kara Cousins of Eastview, libero/defensive specialist Calleigh Steichen of Eagan and setter Jazzmyn Tinglehoff of Lakeville South. All three will be juniors this fall. Camille Benson of Burnsville and Monica Turner of Lakeville South played for the Northern Lights 17-1 team that finished third in the 17 Open Division at the AAU nationals. Turner was an All-America selection. The Northern Lights 12-1 team was third in the Open Division at the AAU tourney. Northern Lights sent 20 teams to the AAU nationals, and 10 of them had top10 finishes. Four of Northern Lights’ eight teams at the Junior Olympics placed in the top 10 in their divisions.
More volleyball Two high school volleyball preview tournaments will be the weekend of Aug. 6-7 at Midwest Volleyball Warehouse in Burnsville. Breakdown Sports USA will hold its second Summer Elite Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 6. Lakeville North and Lakeville South are in the 32-team invitational; Lakeville North won the inaugural tournament in 2010. Midwest Volleyball will have a separate pre-season tournament open to all varsity-level teams on Sunday, Aug. 7.
2 top-5s for Schmitz Sammy Schmitz, who plays out of Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley, had back-to-back top-five finishes in two major tournaments last week. Schmitz, a reinstated amateur, was
fifth in the Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship July 18-20 at White Bear Yacht Club. He was one of only three players out of 156 to match or better par in all three rounds. He shot 7071-71–212 to finish fifth at 1 under par. Former University of Minnesota player Donald Constable shot 206 (7 under par) to win by three strokes. Eagan native Ryan Peterson, who recently completed his golf eligibility at Colorado State, tied for 27th at 219. Peterson, who finished third in the 2010 MGA Amateur, shot 70 in the first and third rounds, but a 79 in the second round knocked him out of contention. Former Apple Valley High School player Tyler Ekenberg, now at the University of North Alabama, tied for 43rd. Two players from Brackett’s Crossing in Lakeville, Scott Thomas and Carter Holmquist, tied for 47th and 54th respectively. Schmitz finished second at the Minnesota State Open July 22-24 at Rush Creek in Maple Grove. After shooting even-par 72 in the first round, he closed with two 68s for a 208 total, two strokes behind Troy Johnson, an amateur whose home course is Rush Creek. Peterson tied for 16th at 1-under 215. Parker Pemberton, an Apple Valley High School and University of New Mexico graduate now playing on the Dakotas Tour, was in a tie for 24th at even-par 216.
Babe Ruth update The Minnetonka Mudhens defeated Eastview twice, 6-5 and 4-3, in the finals of the state Senior Babe Ruth baseball tournament July 18 in Apple Valley. Minnetonka earned a berth in regional play in Charleston, Mo. The two games against Minnetonka were the only times Eastview lost to a Senior Babe Ruth team all year. Eastview (27-4) also had two losses to American Legion teams in a tournament in Duluth. The Thunder won the state Babe Ruth East Division championship as well as Firecracker Classic.

Mader retires as USA Cup Lakeville North volleyball coach Milan Mader has changed his mind about continuing as Lakeville North High School head volleyball coach and instead will retire after leading the Panthers to the 2010 state Class 3A championship. Mader, 72, stepped down as Lakeville North gymnastics coach after the 201011 season and retired from teaching at Century Junior High in Lakeville in June. In May, shortly before his induction into the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame, Mader said he would continue as volleyball head coach. His change of plans means he will retire as one of only two Minnesota high school volleyball coaches with 800 career victories. Mader won his 800th match last season and finishes his volleyball coaching career with 806 victories. A native of the Czech Republic, Mader has coached for 44 years, the last 35 in Lakeville schools. His gymnastics teams won 10 state championships, including six in a row from 1995 through 2000. Mader-coached Lakeville volleyball teams have been to the state tournament 15 times and made six championship match appearances. The Panthers won their first state title in 2010. His volleyball players at Lakeville have included former U.S. Olympian Elisabeth Bachman and two Ms. Volleyball award winners – Amy Braun (2008) and Kellie McNeil (2010). – Compiled by Mike Shaughnessy

girls U16 Gold championship. It went to penalty kicks before the Burnsville Fire Black Storm defeated the Coon Rapids Cardinals. Alexandra Jones scored the deciding goal for the Black Storm in the shootout. The Black Storm, a Premier team, allowed only two regulation-time goals in six USA Cup games. The Black Storm is coached by Jeff Dennehy, who led the Totino-Grace girls to three state high school Class A championships and also coached the Burnsville girls varsity for one season. A three-hour weather delay on July 23 caused most championship games to be shortened to 60 minutes. In other USA Cup finals, Ela Red of Illinois defeated the Dakota Rev Red Devils 2-0 for the boys U11 A 8-vs.-8 title. The Eagan Wave defeated FCM Wave 98 of Michigan 3-2 for the girls U13 Silver Flight championship. Dakota Rev Venom (girls U13 B Flight), Valley United Fusion (boys U16 A Flight) and Dakota Rev Rampage (girls U16 A Flight) were playoff champions in the USA Cup Weekend tournament, held July 15-17 at the National Sports Center before the weeklong USA Cup tourney.
ment berth. Four of Eastview’s six losses came in the final week of the regular season, when Klefsaas said his team was worn down from a grueling schedule that included 21 games in 14 days. “We took a break for three days, and when we came back, we told the kids it was a new season and we needed to get our intensity back,” Klefsaas said. Eastview was the sharper team in the district title game. Burnsville, which has many of the same players who won the state high school Class 3A championship in June, had two runners picked off first base and made a couple of uncharacteristic throwing errors. Relief pitcher Joey Voss shut out a potent Burnsville lineup over the final five innings. Burnsville’s Tyler Hanson homered in the fourth inning against Eastview starter Austin Lindquist to tie the game 2-2. RBI singles by Matt Larson and David Barry in the fifth and sixth innings put Eastview back up 4-2. Later in the sixth, Eastview made it 5-2 on a play that typifies the Thunder’s offense. two outs and runners at second and third. Instead of swinging away, he pushed a bunt past the Burnsville pitcher, beat it out and drove in a run. “It’s our philosophy,” Klefsaas said. “If you can bunt, you put more pressure on a defense. The next time Alec came up, he got a hit past the third baseman, who was playing up because he knew Alec might bunt.” Voss is one of three “super seniors” – players who have completed one year of college yet are still young enough to be in Legion ball – on Eastview’s roster. The others are starting catcher Matt DeCovich and starting shortstop Cody Groskreutz. “I definitely was going to come back this year, especially with our regular catcher also coming back,” said Voss, who had a 2.61 earned-run average in 14 appearances with St. Olaf College this spring. “All three of our super seniors are on college teams.” Another opportunity to play Burnsville also got the Thunder’s attention. Eastview lost to Burnsville in the high school section final. In Legion ball, Burnsville took two regular-season games from the Thunder. “Burnsville’s one of our biggest rivals in baseball,” Voss said. “They always have been because they’re usually good and we’re usually good. “We beat them last year to win the district. We wanted to do it again this year, especially after they beat us twice this season.”

Former home health nurse enjoys creating healthier homes New Windows for America expanding its products, efficiency and facility Rhonda and Jim Steffes have owned and operated New Windows for America in New Brighton since 2000. Their business has grown to 30 employees and moved in March 2011 to a bigger location in New Brighton off of 35W. The company sells and installs residential windows, doors, siding, attic insulation, metal and solar roofing. “We started as a windows only company, but over the years have expanded to include more energy efficient products,” said Rhonda, who started the company after working for 10 years as a home health care RN. “I went from taking care of people to taking care of homes. We want to be your Energy Savings Solution Company.” Jim was a CPA working as the chief financial officer for a manufacturing plant before he joined Rhonda in the company. “We were founded after all the hassles and high prices we obtained while searching for windows in our home,” says Rhonda. “We felt we could do it better, cheaper and with less hassles for the homeowner. We become your ‘window guy’ for any problems, questions or
concerns. One call to us will take care of it.” With the federal government pushing homeowners to be more energy efficient, New Windows for America has joined forces with Xcel Energy and is now a trade partner. “Our relationship with Xcel Energy helps us help our customers save money by making their homes more energy efficient with attic insulation,” adds Rhonda. “We also made homes energy efficient with Energy Star certified windows, which can slash up to 40% off your home’s heating and air conditioning loss.” Solar roofing is another new product the company is installing so homeowners can eliminate a large portion of their home electrical costs, which in turn helps decrease our dependency on foreign oil. For the last nine years the company has received the Super Service Award from Angies List and has an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. They also have a 12 month Same-as-Cash financing program. Rhonda claims that a major key to their success is having the highest quality installa-
tion, adding how “most of our customer feedback is reporting how conscientious and meticulous our installers are.” New Windows for America offers a double lifetime warranty including glass breakage and lifetime labor. All vinyl replacement windows are guaranteed for as long as you own the home. The warranty in non-prorated and there will be no charge for glass seal failure or glass breakage to the present property owner or the subsequent homeowner. “If you provide lifetime labor warranty, it needs to be right the first time,” adds Rhonda. In addition to the lifetime warranty the company offers an energy guarantee. Their standard window is a triple pane which is 30% more energy efficient than double pane windows most other companies install. Besides being more energy efficient, Rhonda says other benefits of having new windows and siding include increased property value and security, noise reduction, enhanced appearance of your home and they are maintenance free and easy to clean.
Want To Lower Your Energy Bills? Slash up to 40% off the heat & air conditioning loss of your home.
Plus, the Remodeling Magazine's Cost Versus Value report concludes, when replacing 10+ windows with vinyl replacement windows, the home's immediate return of investment is 73.6 percent. New Windows for America offers all vinyl or a wood interior window that has the maintenance free vinyl exterior. This is a nice option for those who want to keep a real wood window in their home. The wood windows are available in both oak & poplar. “We have over 2,770 references, and have installed over 50,000 windows in the Twin Cities,” adds Rhonda. “Approximately 35-40 percent of our business is generated through referrals or repeat business.” Store hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
