Looking to the future for former AV concrete site BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Despite churning out tons of concrete during its existence, the future of the now-closed Hanson Concrete site in Apple Valley is anything but set in stone. Apple Valley is seeking another occupant for the industrially zoned 80-acre plot of land, located at 6055 150th St. W., to replace the jobs that disappeared following the plant’s closing in March. City officials recently issued a request for proposals to locate and select a consulting service with a primary objective of providing the city with an examination of the market of potential users and the economic feasibility of those users. In this instance, city officials have identified local and national site selectors that have clients in their respective areas. “We certainly are interested in landing a new business with job opportunities,” said Bruce Nordquist, community development director for Apple Valley. “We are looking for them to provide the consulting service to help

identify and attract a new business with more employees. We are looking for a particular type of business that is a job generator.” City officials do not expect another concrete manufacturer to fill the vacancy due to outdated equipment, as well as independent consultants saying that another similar plant would not be economically feasible. Because the location is industrially zoned, it provides flexibility with what type of business the city hopes to attract, Nordquist said, adding that the options could range from a medical office, a light manufacturing plant, or a financial or technical service. Prefacing his next comment by saying it may be premature to consider, Nordquist said that the city is open to green technology as well. Apple Valley Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland agreed with Nordquist in regards to attracting an environmentally friendly business. CONCRETE: TO PAGE 5

Soldier donates unique flag to Eagan church BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS A grand old gesture can go a long way. St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Eagan will fly an American flag of significance for 16 days, bookended by Memorial Day on May 30 and Flag Day on June 14. The flag, donated by parishioner John Mazzitello, flew in an F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft on mission over Afghanistan last April. Mazzitello, 41, of Mendota Heights, donated the flag to the church at a

Apple Valley resident promoted to corporate chef at MHC St. Paul Hotel head chef to continue dual functions in new role BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS One Apple Valley resident is ready to get cooking in his new position. Morrissey Hospitality Companies recently promoted Lance Kapps to the position of corporate chef. Kapps has been serving as executive chef at the St. Paul Hotel since 2003 and will continue in this role while taking on new responsibilities as MHC’s corporate chef. In Kapps’ new role, he will be responsible for overseeing the culinary operations of the hotel, the St. Paul Grill, and Tria restaurant and bar, and will also be consulting with the MHC culinary group at RiverCentre in St. Paul. Kapps has spent nearly 25 years working in the industry, first starting out as many did – as a dishwasher. It was not long before he found himself performing preparation-type duties and eventually working different kitchen-related stations.

Lance Kapps “I always enjoyed doing it when I was younger, and I did it every summer. It gets in your blood,” Kapps said about his early days in the industry. “There is always that next thing to learn. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in a kitchen.” Before joining the staff at the St. Paul Hotel, Kapps was the executive

chef for Wisconsin’s Pfister Hotel and the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa, but this position was long separated from his first job in the industry at a very young age. “I was probably 15,” Kapps said, referring to his age when he entered the industry “I worked with some local cafés and restaurants in upstate New York.” Kapps, who graduated from the Culinary Arts program at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., may still be working mostly out of the St. Paul Hotel, but his new position will have him spending time at other MHC restaurants in the Twin Cities area. One of those restaurants will be Tria in North Oaks, Minn. “It is a restaurant that has an French-country cuisine,” Kapps said, adding that the establishment has been open for about seven years. “They have a great patio and dining area for the summer.” Given the scope of Kapps’ new position, which for MHC involves several different restaurants, the Apple Valley resident said it is important to create a distinction between one from another.

KAUFMAN – BRYANT Melanie Ann Kaufman, daughter of Mike and Julie Kaufman of Lakeville, MN and Andrew Jorge Bryant, son of Dan and Debbie Bryant of Cleveland, OH announce their engagement. Melanie is a 2002 graduate of Apple Valley High School and a 2006 graduate of Minnesota State, Mankato. She is a teacher in the Burnsville School District. Andrew is a 2000 graduate of Cleveland Heights High School and a 2005 graduate of the University of Toledo. He is a teacher in the Wayzata School District. The couple is planning a summer wedding and resides in Shakopee, MN.

“Every food program has it’s own food identity,” Kapps said, referring to different restaurants that have different styles. “I think it’s important to chefs and I know it’s important to customers.” Certain individuals close to Kapps do not need to drive to North Oaks to enjoy fine dining, however, as the longtime chef is always ready and willing to prepare meals for his wife and three children. Kapps feels it is very important for family to take the time to spend time with one another, especially for dinner. “It is fun to cook and sit down with my kids,” Kapps said. Kapps was not the only individual who received a promotion as MHC announced that several others in the company were being promoted at the same time. “At MHC, we are dedicated to developing and retaining top culinary talent,” said MHS President William Morrissey. “I am very pleased to fill these positions from the talented team of chefs within our organization and from other successful and known restaurants and brands.”

BY JOSEPH PALMERSHEIM • SUN NEWSPAPERS One local nonprofit is turning to the public to help raise funds to continue its mission of bringing joy to children undergoing medical treatment. The Spirit of Brandtjen Farms will host the Suburban Adventure 5K Walkathon and Run starting 8 a.m. Saturday, June 4. All proceeds will benefit HopeKids, a nonprofit providing activities to children going through medical treatment and their families. The event opens 8 a.m. with registration, followed by a 5K and 10K race at 9 a.m., a 5K Walkathon at 9:30 a.m., a kids fun run at 11 a.m. and a picnic lunch at noon. According to HopeKids President Josh Taylor, his nonprofit is built around the idea of “hope being a powerful medicine,” and aims to give kids in treatment something to look forward to. Taylor said the Suburban Adventure is HopeKid’s biggest annual fundraiser. His goal for this year is to have 500 people attend, and he hopes to raise $65,000. That many people turned up last year, and raised $47,500. More than $65,000 was raised in 2009, during the first Suburban Adventure. “If we can have kids looking forward to the future, there is something to give them a constant state of anticipation, rather than seeing a calendar full of therapy,” Taylor said. “They look at our calendar of events and see the Twins games, private movie screenings, and so on. It allows them to see that rather than the medical maze. If we didn’t provide this, they wouldn’t be doing this, because they don’t have the resources. Life stands still for these families, and there is not a lot of hope in that.” Medical monotony is something that Robin Snook of Lakeville knows firsthand. Her son, DJ, now 5, went through three years of treatment for leukemia, and she credits HopeKids with pulling her family together during a difficult time. “We didn’t really get to do a lot of

fun stuff, and Hope made it possible,” she said. “It’s a way to get away from the hospital and clinic appointments. This offers him a chance to be a kid, to wind down and have fun.” DJ recently finished his last treatment session March 12, and started preschool. He’ll be participating in the Suburban Adventure with two teams of family. “It’s a small thing I feel that we’re doing to give back, but I hope that every bit of what we can raise will help someone, and even us in the long run,” Snook said. “This is just a chip off the ice to be able to do this and raise the money, but it makes me feel good that at least there is something I can participate in.” S eve n - ye a r- o l d Mitchell Tanquist of Burnsville has spina bifida, and being involved with HopeKids has broadened his horizons, said his mother, Kristy. “The first thing we did [with HopeKids] last year was go to Elko, and he got to drive one of those midget cars,” Kristy said. “He would have never had that opportunity before. He got to meet the drivers, sat in the cars and that was something new for him. One of the best things [he did with HopeKids] was a Build a Bear with the Timberwolves. He built a bear with Kevin Love. That’s all he talks about.” According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, spina bifida is a birth defect in which the backbone and spinal canal do not close before birth. As a result, Mitchell has to use specialized walking sticks to get around, and “everything takes five times longer than it would for a typical kid,” Kristy said. Being involved in HopeKids hasn’t just helped Mitchell, Kristy said. “When this first happened, we thought we were only ones with child like this,” she said. “We found we could make it through. It’s not easy, but when you start talking to other families, you know it can be OK. I know that if we didn’t give back, HopeKids wouldn’t exist. Any little amount we can give can help.”For more information on the event, visit bit.ly/lOSfbc.

Concrete FROM PAGE 1 “There is an opportunity for creating green manufacturing in that general vicinity,” she said. “The location is a perfect location for people and companies coming in from out of town.” Hamann-Roland cited Uponor, a 400year-old Finish company with its North American headquarters in Apple Valley, as an existing company that could possibly attract other Scandinavian-based companies to the city in general. “It has expanded four times over the last three years,” she said, adding there are more than 300 people who work at Uponor, which provides heating and cooling, plumbing, fire safety and other related services. The mayor stressed that the city’s location is also an advantage for both foreign and domestic businesses, noting Cedar Avenue and how it serves as a direct artery to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. “It’s both for the companies that could fly in from the Nordic – it has connections in Nordic region – and companies that might expand in our area,” Hamann-Roland said. Above all else, however, Hamann-

Roland expressed more concern over the types of jobs that the city hopes to land in the future by saying Apple Valley needs “head-of-household jobs for our community, which can sustain our families.” According to the city, Apple Valley currently has a population of about 50,000, but that figure is expected to increase to 70,000 by 2030. Meanwhile, the city’s labor force currently stands at approximately 30,000 people, but there are only about 13,000 jobs in the community. All proposals must be received by Friday, June 3, and the market analysis, as well as a design strategy, must be completed by Friday, Dec. 30.

Visit www.minnlocal.com for extended news and advertising The Apple Valley Community Development Department has begun the process of finding and hiring a consulting firm to help the department perform a market analysis and feasibility study for the 80-acres of land that became available in March after Hanson Concrete closed. Sometimes, it’s more like an ‘inconvenience store’ BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Ever since the state lottery went into effect in Minnesota, the wild and crazy idea was almost too much for the mildmannered Minnesota temperament to handle. But the novelty wore off in time, and the lottery itself went on to do quite well. I have to give credit where it’s due, but there is one aspect of the lottery that state officials seemingly never thought to consider. I certainly recall the first and only scratch ticket I ever bought. The year is vague, but it had to be in the late ‘80s or early ‘90s, shortly after the lottery was implemented in our state. It could go without saying that I lost money, which should come as no surprise when you take the time to calculate the odds. I did not pay any attention to the fact I was purchasing it while in line at a convenient store. Tens of thousands of people do this daily. But when you

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I wonder... To the editor: Is the Minnesota GOP homophobic? Recently, Bradlee Dean gave a voice and a face to those that would chisel homophobia into the Minnesota Constitution. The GOP House Leadership immediately, and wisely, denounced Mr. Dean. However, how can the House GOP support a vote on the homophobic constitutional amendment in one breath and denounce Mr. Dean in the next? Maybe his views put too much clarity into what the GOP is proposing? John W. Fox Eagan

moment or so but continued on with his or her business, whatever it was. This is one classic example how these lottery tickets and scratch-offs turn what should be a quick and convenient stop into a 10-minute or more major pain in the rear. As a result, the stores in which I have experienced this are the exact ones I tend to avoid. This is something I guess lottery officials never thought of. I am probably not the only person whom this irritates, and I’m also guessing that I’m not the only one who has driven a few extra blocks or maybe even a mile to avoid this nonsense. For me the solution is easy. As I have already stated, please, please, please create an entirely separate checkout line strictly for those who wish to defy logic by waging against enormous odds. The rest of us can buy our Cokes, Slim Jims, and Jujubees within a few moments and be at our destinations before John Doe realizes he just wasted $20.

Are these worthy of our concern?

To the editor: An amendment defining marriage. Voter ID legislation. Abortion legislation. What do any of these social issues have to do with providing jobs, refueling our state economy, and balancing the budget? These issues are not the top concern for those who are unemployed with depleted retirement savings, behind in house payments and without health insurance. These issues are not the top concern for those teachers who are losing their jobs. LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

Letters con’t FROM PREVIOUS PAGE These issues are not the top concern for disabled or mentally ill citizens about to lose what little lifeline services they’re receiving. These issues are not the top concern for the majority of Minnesota citizen. It’s unbelievable this is how the Republican controlled state legislature is spending the last days of the session. Governor Dayton has reached out and offered a compromise. The Republican legislature refuses to move an inch because they say compromise is not what they were elected to do. They need to be reminded they are governing for all of the state of Minnesota. Thank you Governor Dayton for doing your job and understanding what real governing is: compassion, compromise and thinking of all Minnesotans. Fay Coggshall Apple Valley

On parking tickets… To the editor: To the city of Apple Valley: I recently received a parking ticket for keeping my car on the side of the road overnight. I was parked in a residential neighborhood where I was unaware of the city’s

parking guidelines. First, who has knowledge of parking ordinances anyway? Second, there was no sign presented on the side of the road as to what hours I could or could not park. Sure, it may seem minor. It is a harmless parking ticket, but to me it is not about the ticket itself. I am a law-abiding citizen, although I do drive 5 MPH over the speed limit from time-to-time, but who doesn’t? This situation seems all but unfair, especially when there are no signs posted on the side of the road. Parking “violations” are nothing compared as to what should really be kept a close eye on: drunk drivers, speeders, drug busts, underage drinking, crime, etc. Police officials need to focus on the safety of the people of this city, and cut some slack to actual law abiding citizens. And in the meantime, put up parking hour signs on the side of the road. Sarah Freidman St. Louis Park

Eagan boy swims to raise money for Rahn Elementary BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Thomas Ryan has been a student of the water before he ever took classes in a school building. “When he was three years old taking swimming lessons, he would jump in the water without any regard if anyone was watching him or not,” said Barb Ryan, Thomas’s mother. “And right then, I knew that this kid had to swim.” Now, Thomas is using his love of the water to benefit his school. The elevenyear-old will be the sole participant in a “swim-a-thon” to raise money for Rahn Elementary School, which is set to become an Arts & Technology magnet school beginning in the 2011-2012 school year. The swim-a-thon will begin 9 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at Burnsville High School, where Thomas will attempt to swim 200 laps or swim for two straight hours – whichever comes first. “His swim coach says that he should have no trouble completing 200 laps in an hour and a half,” Ryan said. Thomas, who is in fifth grade, said his previous high mark is 40 laps swum in a row. “I have no doubt,” Thomas said of his chances to reach his swimming goal.

Rahn School fifth grader Thomas Ryan practices the breaststroke at Burnsville High School on May 25. Thomas is holding a swim-a-thon on June 4 at the high school to raise money for his school’s Arts and Technology magnet program, which will begin in the fall of 2011 school year. (Submitted photo) Thomas picked a fund raising goal of $1,000 after raising nearly $300 in his first day of funding May 24. So far, he has received donations from friends, relatives, and neighbors. He even received a $2 donation from a seven-year-old on his

swim team, The Black Dogs. Last year, Thomas was offered an opportunity to travel to Australia as part of the People to People Ambassador Program. He couldn’t afford the trip, but the idea to fund raise and give back to his

school was born. This fall, Rahn is set to become one of only a few Arts & Technology magnet schools in the Twin Cities metro area. With no funding from outside the district, Thomas took it upon himself to help out his school. “It means a lot that he will be giving back to his community at a young age,” Ryan said. Thomas intends to begin the swim-athon using the freestyle stroke – his favorite – but will rotate back and forth with the breaststroke. His mom will serve as the official lap counter and timekeeper for the event, which is open to the public. Rahn Elementary School Principal Elaine Mehdizadeh said other students have generated fund raising ideas, but Thomas’ idea is unique because his school will be the recipient of the money he raises. “I think it’s just an amazing event that Thomas is doing for our school,” Mehdizadeh said. “It speaks highly of who Thomas is in terms of how he wants to contribute to our school.” Pledges can be made per lap or as a flat, one-time contribution. Donations can be made by sending a check made out to “Rahn Elementary” and can be mailed to: Rahn Elementary, Attn: Cindy Crosby, Swim-a-thon, 4424 Sandstone Drive, Eagan MN, 55412.

Flag FROM PAGE 1 “They adopted my unit as kind of their own,” Mazzitello said, adding that he purchased the flag from his base exchange while in Afghanistan. His good friend, Lt. Col. Cloyce “Scorch” Adams, served as the weapon’s officer on the mission, and kept the flag with him in the cockpit. Mazzitello and his unit gave the flag to the church as a way to recognize the military ministry group’s support of their squadron. “It almost can’t even be put into words,” Mazzitello said. “The amount of effort, money, and time that the church put into supporting our squadron, to give them a flag flown on a combat mission almost isn’t enough.” The church group mailed care packages containing coffee, granola bars, energy bars, and other items to Mazzitello’s unit, according to Brian Becker, Military Service Support Ministry communications leader. Some parishioners struck up pen pal correspondences with the squadron’s soldiers, Mazzitello said. “They even had enough care and thought to send packages tailored to females,” he said, adding that he stopped counting the number of care packages his unit received at 60. “The flag was presented to church to do with it as they wish,” Mazzitello said. “Our squadron is honored that they chose to fly it between Memorial Day and Flag Day.” Mazzitello, who is the Public Works Director for the City of Mendota Heights, asked city councilmember Jack Vitelli to design and build a container for the flag. Vitelli built a triangular, cedar wood case where the flag is now kept. After Flag Day, the flag will be returned to the case, though church members are unsure of where it will permanently be displayed. Mazzitello has been deployed overseas five times in his 19 years of active duty. Though groups of five to six men of his unit have been recently deployed, their latest mission to Afghanistan was the first time the 67-man squadron has served overseas since the Desert Storm Operation in the early 1990s. Stationed at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, the unit repaired air field lighting and runway pavement, in addition to providing infrastructure for new construction projects and maintaining various utility and maintenance facilities.

Local men’s 900-mile bike ride to end in Apple Valley BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS John Elder set out on his annual vacation last week. Some people might find Elder’s idea of a vacation to be cruel and unusual punishment, but the 64-year-old Bloomington man would likely argue a lousy day on his bicycle is better than a good day at the office. He might tell you that, but he’d probably also tell you there’s no such thing as a lousy day on his bike. Elder and Dennis Hill, of Bloomington, kicked off the sixth annual Christian Elder Memorial 900. The bike ride, named in memory of Elder’s son, is a fundraising ride Elder completes each year to raise money for Kids ‘n Kinship, a youth mentoring program serving portions of Dakota County. Elder has been involved with the organization for years, acting as a mentor to a boy named Dante, who recently turned 18, is about to graduate from high school and plans to go to college this fall. Elder’s bike rides have raised about $114,000 for Kids ‘n Kinship in five years, and the 2011 ride has raised another $24,000, according to Elder. His hope is that the final tally for this year’s ride tops $26,000.

A charitable challenge

There are several fundraising bike rides held annually in Minnesota. Elder didn’t ride in any of them. He began distance riding seven years ago. As he built up his endurance, his sense of adventure kicked in. He began planning what would become an annual 900-mile bike ride. The challenge of pedaling 100s of miles during a 16-day span wasn’t enough, evidently. “Why don’t I make it a charity ride?” Those initial challenges turned into an annual tradition. Elder’s riding partner, Hill, is joining him for the fifth time. The duo is not alone as they travel through the farmland of Iowa in 60mile increments. Elder’s brother Jim drives a small motor home and trailer each day, stopping every 20 miles to provide a rest stop for the riders. And the duo will have a third wheel, so to speak, throughout the trip, as three more riders will join them during the trek, each participating on one 300-mile leg of the ride. The route changes each year. This year’s route is best described as a pin-

wheel. The ride is beginning in Des Moines, Iowa. The itinerary includes many bike trails through Iowa, and several of the daily destinations are cities that host minor league baseball, Elder explained. If all goes according to plan the duo will visit five minor league ballparks this year, he noted. At 60 miles per day, the riders would finish their 900 miles in 15 days, but their schedule has one off day built in, at the completion of 600 miles, Elder noted. They will ride if it is raining, but Elder knows some day weather will force an unscheduled day off. That day, however, has yet to come. The ride commences in late May in part to avoid the dog days of summer. Avoiding heat didn’t seem to be an issue as the journey began last week, Elder noted. “This has been a surprising spring.” The ride concludes June 11 at Merchants Bank in Apple Valley, the primary corporate sponsor of the event.

Kids ‘n Kinship

The nonprofit Kids ‘n Kinship program provides “friendships for children who are in need of a positive role model,” according to Jan Belmore, the program director. Belmore’s chapter is one of 22 serving Minnesota. The program matches individuals, couples or families as mentors to children. “That gives us a lot of flexibility in terms of style of relationships that that we can provide for the children,” she said. The organization has a waiting list of 65 children, and provides matches for about 30 children per year, she noted. Kids ‘n Kinship has periodic information sessions for prospective mentors. The next meeting is June 15 in Burnsville. Proceeds from Elder’s ride supports established mentoring relationships and helps the organization recruit mentors, Belmore said. “It is thrilling and humbling to witness the effort and dedication of the team of riders,” she said. “Each rider contributes an enormous amount of personal time and funds to participate in the ride.”We feel a deep sense of gratitude to them.” Information about Kids ‘n Kinship is available online at kidsnkinship.org. Information about the annual bike ride, including a road diary updated daily, is at cem900.com.

Eagan school aims to instill virtues of healthy living Eagan students taking part in Safe Routes to School pilot program BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Officials with one area elementary school have found a way to mobilize its students for healthier living. Eagan’s Red Pine Elementary School is among many schools participating in a pilot program of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. Referred to as “Fire Up Your Feet,” the program is aimed at encouraging more students to be more physically active as a way of promoting healthier lifestyles. Jill Chamberlain is a community prevention consultant with Blue Cross Blue Shield, which provides funding for the SRTS initiative. She explained the intent of the FUYF program. “Safe Routes to School is a global movement that boils down to the two basic ideas where kids can walk or bike,” she said. “There are several schools across Dakota County that have implemented SRTS strategies and initiatives for the past couple of years” Along with Red Pine Elementary, Greenleaf Elementary School in Apple Valley has a strong group of parents and a committed physical education teacher who has organized walking and biking events and has improved crossing guard support, according to Chamberlain. The dramatically increasing rate of childhood obesity served as on major inspiration for the creation of the program. “I think the main reason, according to the Centers for Disease Control,

Childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past 30 years,” said Karen Lyons, a spokesperson for BCBS, who said that the main reason Blue Cross is involved is reduce childhood obesity and their overall health. “We want to recognize the schools that are doing innovative things. From now until June 15 they can register on the website and log their trip activities to and from School,” Lyons noted. “The website continues after June 15, but that’s when the contest ends.” The contest serves as an incentive for children to participate with a first prize of $500, a second prize of $250 for participation. The money will go back to the school, and the schools are encouraged to use the money for anything that promotes or encourages physical activity. The program features an easy-to-use website that allows families to register students and track their walking and biking mileage and time spent involved in physical activity. “We want to recognize the schools that are doing innovative things. From now until June 15 they can register on the website and log their trip activities to and from school,” Lyons said. The website continues after June 15, but that is when the contest ends, so individuals can continue to log their physical activity on an ongoing basis. Also, the website and the program itself is not limited to schoolchildren. Parents and caregivers may participate as well, but the parents may only log those miles generated while walking or biking with their children to and from their respective schools. For more information about how to register and begin logging physical activity, visit fireupyourfeet.org.

Two Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 elementary schools recently received funds from a national health program that supports student wellness. The “Fuel Up to Play 60” program partners with the National Dairy Council and National Football League and encourages student nutrition and 60 minutes of daily exercise to improve grades and to fight child obe-

Brett Long, Park Nicollet vice president of strategy and quality, said that the decision to open a Park Nicollet care center in Lakeville was in part based on community input. “At Park Nicollet…we believe in responding to the community’s needs and preferences,” Long said. “When we asked the Lakeville and surrounding communities about health care services, they clearly stated their preference for a Park Nicollet Clinic closer to home. Lakeville is also a natural extension of the many specialty services provided at our Park Nicollet Burnsville Clinic which is only six miles north of the Lakeville clinic.” Dave Olson, community economic

development director for Lakeville, said the city did not seek out Park Nicollet, but said the city is in favor of and supports medical service providers coming into the city. “We are working with them,” Olson said, adding that the clinic will benefit area residents by providing its services locally. “It’s more about convenience than I think anything. You now don’t have to drive to Eagan for medical care.” Singh, who announced that the clinic is coming to Lakeville at the Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday, April 27, said the clinic would offer additional services in addition to the services as a primary care clinic. “At the Lakeville site we are going to offer pediatrics and family medicine,” the doctor said. “We have providers who basically can see anyone from birth to the end of adulthood.” Singh, a pediatrician herself and graduate of a local school commented on her future of providing medical services to area residents. “I’m a graduate of Apple Valley High School,” she said, adding she has been part of the south metro for years. “It’s really nice for me to be able to build something that can provide a service to people

in the community.” Speaking generally, Singh said that she and other Park Nicollet officials realize that Lakeville prides itself having a smalltown feel. “We are really cognizant of that and concerned with patient education,” she said, adding that collectively she and Park Nicollet officials wish to deliver a traditional and personal type of service to accommodate this sentiment. “Doctors know who you are, but still have resources of Park Nicollet behind them to provide the best quality of care in an atmosphere where people feel welcome and that their needs are being met,” she noted. Singh, who currently serves as site leader at a Park Nicollet facility in St. Louis Park, added that the Lakeville clinic is going to be certified as a medical home, a nationwide concept to help patients find a home for all of their medical care. The new clinic will officially open its doors Monday, Aug. 22, and it will additionally feature extended hours, including nights, early mornings and eventually weekends. A ceremonial grand opening involving the Lakeville Chamber of Commerce, however, will take place shortly after Aug. 22.

Ukulele popularity brings smiles to Schmitt Music shoppers BY JEFF BARTHEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS There are many instruments on the walls of Schmitt Music, and an infinite number of notes that can be played on them. One instrument gaining popularity can not only produce notes, but also, according to a sale manager, can make people smile. “It’s inviting,” Jerry Grote, senior sales manager of musical instruments at Schmitt Music, said of the ukulele, a Portuguese-originated instrument commonly associated with Hawaii. “I can’t think of any other instrument where you can strum it or play a chord and people will just smile.” The instrument has been gaining in popularity throughout the entire United States in recent years. As a way to exhibit the ukulele’s increased popularity and to enhance its growth, Schmitt will be hosting workshops and performances by Lil’ Rev, an accomplished harmonica and ukulele player from Milwaukee, Wis., 6:30 p.m. June 7 at the Burnsville store, June 8 at the Edina Galleria and June 9 at the Minnetonka store. Grote said that sales of ukuleles have been markedly increasing. One reason

for this growth, he said, is the aura of happiness the sound of ukulele creates. Michael Carlson, assistance manager of Schmitt Music in Burnsville, concurs. “A lot of people say that you can’t not smile when you’re playing [a ukulele],” he said, describing customer comments he often receives. “It’s just a happy sound.” The ukulele – or “uke,” for short – has often been thought of as a niche instrument. Grote agrees that the uke still has its particular notoriety, but its fandom is expanding into other genres and audiences as of late. He cited Beatles and Frank Sinatra songs as some of the tunes that have been recreated with the ukulele. Several famous musicians have been experimenting and succeeding with the ukulele over the past few years. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole performed the song “Over the Rainbow” in the 2004 Adam Sandler movie, “50 First Dates.” Jason Mraz’s song, “I’m Yours,” was nominated for a Grammy award in 2009. The band, Train, won a Grammy for it’s single, “Hey, Soul Sister.” Multi-platinum recording artist, Taylor Swift, has recently been performing some of her hit songs on the ukulele.

Another recent addition to the ukulele scene is former Pearl Jam frontrunner, Eddie Vedder. The lead singer and guitar player for the rock band Pearl Jam, Vedder still performs with as part of the group but has become a solo artist. Instead of a guitar, Vedder has been plucking the strings of a ukulele. Vedder’s new album, “Ukulele Songs,” is comprised entirely of songs played on his ukulele. The album is set to be released Tuesday, May 31. His tour as a ukulele soloist is coming to the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on Saturday, July 2. Although he’s older and bit more subdued than his early rocker years, Vedder’s new venture brings a whole new audience to the ukulele scene and provides yet another avenue in which its popularity can prosper. “That’s about as opposite as polar gets,” Grote said, regarding Vedder’s ukulele interest. “That’s terrific. It’s amazing what something like that can do.” “I think it’s great because it is bringing the folk instrument into the mainstream and [bringing] more popularity,” Carlson said. Grote sees how the increased prevalence of ukulele music garners people’s

interest in the instrument. However, he also sees it the other way around – that the increased exposure of ukulele introduces some of famous musicians into their interest in playing the instrument. “I think it all ties together,” Grote said. “The popularity and just the visibility.” Whatever the case may be, Grote said the interest and increased sales in ukuleles is evident by the instrument’s increased ubiquity. “It used to be that you’d walk into a music store and you’d see many guitars and pianos, popular instruments like that. Not ukuleles,” he said. “Now, you could walk in and you’ll instantly see ukuleles. Because of the demand, people really want to see them.” Besides its smile-inducing sound, Grote said some other reasons for the growth in ukulele popularity include the instrument’s portability, accessibility and simplicity. “[The craze] comes on the heels of small guitars called, ‘travelers.’ Everyone wants one they can put in their suitcase and bring on a plane; one they can bring anywhere you go,” Grote said. “It has four strings instead of six,” he said. “The strings are nylon. Nylon strings are really easy to hold down. The neck is small. So for people with small hands, where certain guitars can be a detriment, the ukulele is perfect for that.” The ukuleles’ relatively low cost is another reason for its growing popularity, Grote said. Sales of ukuleles at Schmitt Music start as low as $30. “It’s something that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg for,” he said. Grote shared a story on how simple it is to play a ukulele. He was playing one at the front of a Schmitt store when he came across a lady he said had to have been in her 80s, maybe early 90s. Grote asked if he could help her. “She said, ‘Well, I’ve always wanted to play but I can’t. I just can’t,” he said. “I said to her that if you want to play ukulele it’s very easy. I picked one up, strummed a few chords, and, of course, here came that smile.” The woman eventually decided to buy a ukulele and a beginner’s guidebook for $40. Two months later, the lady returned to the store and Grote asked her how she was doing. “She was beaming from ear to ear,” he said. “Her whole life she’s wanted to play an instrument, and didn’t think she had an ounce of talent. Now, she’s a musician.” Go to schmittmusic.com for more information.

Trap Shooter FROM PREVIOUS PAGE trains at the team’s facility in Colorado Springs, Colo. The organization prepares U.S. athletes in shooting sports and promotes these sports throughout the country. Kelsey’s father, Mark, a longtime competitive shooter and hunter himself, introduced his daughter to the sport when she was 11 years old. Since that first time seeing her shoot, Mark has seen Kelsey develop over the years, to a point now where she can make history. “In order to get her into competitive trap shooting, she had to take the firearms safety training. I sat with her through several trap shooting videos, how-to type videos,” Mark said, adding that both training sources helped her understand not only how to shoot but also what a good gun-fit was, “because gun-fit is probably the most important thing to be able to shoot well.” At this time Kelsey was still a little too

small to comfortably handle the weapon. Soon after this, Mark bought her a gun specifically designed for smaller women to shoot trap. The main advantage of these types of guns, Mark said, was their adjustable components. “That was late in the summer, so we didn’t get back out there until the next spring,” Mark said. “Over the years, she improved along the way.” Kelsey continued to work hard, according to her father, who added that she attended a couple shooting clinics to aid her development. She participated in many shooting competitions over the following years, winning several at 14 and 15 years old. The events brought her to Forest Lake, Owatonna, and Buffalo, Minn. As Kelsey’s skills continued to develop, she continued competing and winning larger-scale competitions. “I went to the Minnesota state shoot that year when I was 15,” she said, adding it was her first time. “I guess I had a very successful competition. I shot better than I ever had before.”

Soon, her skills developed to a point where she was recognized nationally by virtue of being named to the AllAmerican team twice. “After two years of placement on the All-American team, I decided that I had achieved my goal,” Kelsey said. “Upon achievement, I had to set a new goal.” She knew immediately that her goal was to win a gold medal at the Olympics. Eventually, Kelsey made the all-important change of shooting American trap to international trap, a change that did not necessarily come easy. Kelsey said there were many differences that made the switch more challenging. “The targets can be presented at any angle within 22 degrees left or right of center,” Kelsey explained, referring to American trap, but in international trap, “There are 15 machines below ground, and the angles vary 45 degrees left and right of center.” Citing the other differences, Kelsey said the targets are moving 62-75 miles per hour, and they are thrown 80 meters instead of 50 yards.

Her goal of winning an Olympic gold prompted the hopeful to leave Kerrville, Texas, where she trained from February 2008 to February 2011, at which time she arrived in Colorado to live and train at the USA Shooting facility for yet more training. “I’m at the range shooting from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. six days a week, Monday-Saturday,” she said, adding that she sees a sports neurologist. “Basically, sports neurology teaches you to tap into and control your brainwaves.” She added that the objective of the sports neurology was to execute a shot while on a specific brainwave, shoot on one while shooting on another. Kelsey also applies this philosophy to the Olympics, at least in her mind’s eye, for now. “My personal coach said you have to have actually thought you’ve won it before you have in reality,” she noted. For Mark, nothing could make a father more proud than seeing his daughter succeed at such an elite level, and potentially winning a gold medal. Understandably emotional, Mark said next to the births of his daughters, “I can’t think of anything that would make me more proud.”

Notebook: Eastview doubles up on golf titles

Lightning fulfills its potential, heads to state

Boys tennis team wins first section title BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eastview boys tennis coach Jeff Olsen had been saying it for a while: His 2011 team had the potential to be very good. But nobody – especially not Olsen – said it would be easy. It wasn’t, but that made the Lightning’s Section 3AA team championship all the more satisfying. Potential turned into performance this season, and last week the Lightning earned the school’s first state Class AA

team tournament berth with a 4-3 victory over Woodbury in the Section 3 final May 25 in Inver Grove Heights. “We’ve had good teams for a few years,” said senior captain Aaron Larson, who plays on the Lightning’s top doubles pairing. “Some good players came up from the JV, and we had an eighth-grader make the varsity a few years ago. “This year, I think we were just stronger mentally. Being a year older helps with that. We’re all pretty solid mentally. We don’t get rattled very often.” The potential for getting rattled was high in the section final, given the stakes. Also, a stiff wind was blowing

across the courts at Simley High School, playing havoc with service tosses and lob shots. “It seemed like in half our matches this year our guys were wearing winter caps and gloves on their off-hand,” Olsen said. “You just have to play, and that’s what our guys did.” Larson and teammate Sam Cychosz gave their team a quick lead with a 6-1, 63 victory at first doubles. Will Biernat’s 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory at first singles was Eastview’s fourth point and clinched the Lightning’s state tournament trip. “A lot of us have played in high-pressure matches against tough players,” BOYS TENNIS: TO NEXT PAGE

The first South Suburban Conference golf team championship trophies will end up in the same place – a display case at Eastview High School. The Lightning boys and girls teams clinched conference titles last week. Eastview’s boys won the final conference tournament May 23 at Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley. It was Eastview’s third victory in four conference tournaments. Lightning senior Max Tylke shot 70 (1 under par) to win the individual medal. Sam Christian (74), Matt Foley (75) and Erik Edsten (75) also counted toward Eastview’s 294 team total. Eastview won back-to-back Lake Conference championships in 2001 and 2002. “To say we’re the first champions of the South Suburban Conference is pretty fun,” Eastview coach Mark Wanous said. “It’s a very good conference. “We lost Eden Prairie [to the Lake Conference], which is nice, I must say. Chaska and Chanhassen [which went to the Missota] are two good teams. But we gained Prior Lake, which went to state last year.” Eastview also is second in Minnesota’s two high school golf rankings, trailing only Eden Prairie in each. Tylke is fourth in the Minnesota Golf Association’s individual rankings, which include players from all three enrollment classes. He’s also fourth in the state coaches association’s Class 3A rankings. Eastview’s senior-dominated lineup has maintained a consistent level of strong play. “Our guys are good at picking each other up,” Wanous said. NOTEBOOK: TO NEXT PAGE

Top athletes stand out at SSC girls track finals Boys Tennis AV’s Browning, Miller are double winners

Several of the metro area’s best multisport athletes were among the top performers at last week’s South Suburban Conference girls track and field meet. Eastview senior Alex Beckman, a standout in soccer and basketball as well as a University of Minnesota track recruit, won the triple jump at the SSC meet. She also is the defending state Class AA champion in that event. Apple Valley’s Taylor Browning, one of the metro’s top scorers in soccer, won two sprint events. Rosemount’s Shade Pratt, who will play soccer at the University of Maryland, won the 400-meter dash at the conference meet. Lakeville North won the girls team championship at the May 24-25 meet at Apple Valley High School, finishing four points ahead of Prior Lake. Apple Valley, Eastview, Eagan and Rosemount finished fourth through seventh.

Apple Valley

Browning’s winning times were 12.35 seconds in the 100 meters and 25.26 in the 200. Also winning two events for the Eagles was senior Chanel Miller, who took the 100 hurdles in 15.13 and the 300 hurdles in 46.54.

Notebook FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “We’ve kind of ham-and-egged it all year. Every guy on the team has helped us this year in one way or another.” On the girls side, Eastview clinched the overall championship by finishing third in the final conference tournament May 23 at Rich Valley. Eagan needed to finish two spots ahead of Eastview at the final conference tourney to earn a share of the overall championship, and three ahead to win it outright. Instead, the Wildcats were second in the May 23 tourney to take second in the overall standings. Eastview won two of the four conference tournaments, while Eagan and Rosemount won one each. Lightning senior Kristi Opatz was overall medalist in the South Suburban with an 84.775 average in four conference tournaments. Also in the top five were Christi Vetter of Lakeville North, Betsy Wallin of Rosemount, Eryn Olson of Bloomington Jefferson and Jordy Drenttel of Eagan. Eastview junior Sara Detlefsen finished first in the two conference tournaments she played, but conference rules require a player to compete in three of the four events to be eligible for the over-

Miller and Browning ran the final two legs on Apple Valley’s conference championship 4x100 relay. Megan Maki and Jaryn Pipkins ran the first two legs on the relay, which finished in 48.90. Pipkins also was third in the 200 in 26.27. Hannah Linder finished second in the pole vault, clearing 11-3. The Eagles had 98 team points, 3.5 behind third-place Lakeville South and one ahead of Eastview, which finished fifth.

Eastview

Beckman’s triple jump of 37-2 won the conference championship by almost 2 feet. She also nearly won the 100, finishing second in 12.38, one-tenth of a second behind Browning. The Lightning’s Erica Bestul (2:19.03) and Anne Ferguson (2:21.82) were first and third in the 800. The same two runners were third and fourth in the 1,600. Paris Sanders, Leah Nesheim, Beckman and Claire Elliott were second in the 4x100 relay in 49.47 and the 4x200 in 1:44.58. Sophomore Melita Ware finished third in the long jump with 16-4 1/4.

Eagan

Danielle Anderson was conference champion in the 3,200 in 11:18.36. The sophomore also finished fifth in the 1,600. Hurdler Alanna Lopez was third in the 100meter race in 15.42 and fourth in the 300 in 48.27. The Wildcats’ best relay finish was third in the 4x200 by Jessica Rupp, Molly Sparks, all championship. The Eastview girls are 12th in the MGA team rankings and Detlefsen is sixth individually. Teams from Eastview, Apple Valley, Eagan and Rosemount competed in the first round of the Section 3AA tournament May 31, with the boys playing at Keller and the girls at Phalen. The top teams and individuals from the first day advance to the second and final round Friday, June 3, at Bunker Hills.

Keeping score

The boys and girls golf titles gave Eastview High School three South Suburban Conference boys championships this spring. Eastview also won the conference boys tennis championship. Rosemount (boys lacrosse, boys track and field) and Burnsville (baseball, softball) won two each. Lakeville North (girls track and field) and Bloomington Kennedy (girls lacrosse) won one apiece.

Softball playoffs

Two of the South Suburban Conference’s best softball pitchers – Kelsey Anderson of Burnsville and Paige Palkovich of Eastview – prevented any scoring for 12 innings before the Blaze broke through in the 13th for a 1-0 victory in the Class 3A, Section 3 final four at Eagan High School. Meghan

Alexis Dickens and Emerald Egwim. Their time was 1:45.49.

Rosemount

Pratt, a state medalist in the 400, won that race in the conference finals in 56.91, almost three seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Rosemount’s Thana Hussein finished fourth in the same race. Hussein and Pratt also ran the first two legs on Rosemount’s first-place 4x400 relay, which finished in 3:58.74. Sophomore Rachel Schow ran the third leg and ninth-grader Hannah Grim was the anchor runner. Grim, Tori Grund, Laura Dennis and Pratt teamed to win the 4x800 in 9:28.39. The Irish’s Katie Duff finished third in the shot put with a throw of 119-3. Junior Laura Dennis was fourth in the 800. Rosemount had 59 team points, 4.5 behind sixth-place Eagan.

Burnsville

The Blaze scored 19 points to finish ninth in the SSC finals. Burnsville’s top finish was a fourth place in the shot put by junior Lateeka Thompson, who threw 39-5. Thompson was fifth in the discus with 116-2. Sophomore Vivian Hett was seventh in the 3,200. Burnsville teams finished sixth in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. – Compiled by Mike Shaughnessy Lehnen’s single scored Laura Comee, who was sent in to run after Anderson led off the inning with a single. Anderson pitched a five-hit shutout. Palkovich allowed eight hits in 13 innings. Burnsville played Park of Cottage Grove in the winners’ bracket final May 27 at Eagan High, while Eastview and Bloomington Jefferson played an elimination game. The championship game was scheduled for June 1.

Adapted softball

The state adapted softball tournament will be Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4, at Coon Rapids High School. Dakota United is the No. 1 seed from the South Conference in the PI (physically impaired) Division. The Hawks will play a quarterfinal game at 5:30 p.m. Friday. In the CI (cognitively impaired) Division, Dakota United is the No. 2 seed from the South Conference and takes on Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville, the fourth seed from the South Conference, plays Anoka-Hennepin at 4. Semifinals and finals are Saturday. The PI championship game will be at 1:45 p.m., with the CI title game scheduled for 3:15.

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE said Biernat, a junior captain who has been playing for the Lightning varsity since eighth grade. “It means a lot to us to be the first Eastview team to go to state,” Biernat added. “Eagan’s had [the section title] the last few years and they had a good team again this year, but we thought we were ready to take it.” Olsen said “I really feel our tough schedule paid dividends. We’ve seen teams like [defending Class AA champion] Eden Prairie and Mounds View, and we found out we could play with them.” No. 4 singles player Tommy Vang and the second doubles team of Dan Falkenberg and Rachit Kshetrapal had to grind out three-set victories against Woodbury. Vang dropped the first set before rallying to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Falkenberg and Kshetrapal won 6-1, 5-7, 6-1. Tommy Vang’s brother Brandon lost in three sets at third singles. Matt Haugdahl and Dan Stika took their third doubles match to three sets before losing. Nishaan Pal played at second singles for the Lightning. Eastview, 16-3, has lost only to Eden Prairie, Mounds View and Sioux Falls (S.D.) O’Gorman. The Lightning went undefeated in nine South Suburban conference matches. Olsen said unity also played a part in Eastview’s success. “This is probably the closest-knit group I’ve had in nine years at Eastview,” the coach said. “It’s a fun group, but they’re really dedicated. They’re a lot of fun to work with.” The Lightning will play the Section 8 champion in the Class AA quarterfinals at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus. If Eastview wins, it could find itself facing Eden Prairie in the semifinals the next day. In early May, “we lost to Eden Prairie 4-3 and there were three three-set matches,” Olsen said. “We were right there.” A state team champion will be determined Wednesday, June 8, then the Class AA singles and doubles tournaments will take place at the U of M the following two days. The Section 3AA individual tournament was in progress when this edition went to press.

Irish track grabs trophy in another big South Suburban meet Rosemount boys take SSC track title BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Rosemount’s strength in sprints, throws and distance events was instrumental in the Irish winning the state boys True Team track and field championship, and the same events were key last week as the Irish breezed to the South Suburban Conference title. Unlike the May 20 True Team finals, which weren’t decided until the final event, Rosemount wrapped up things early in the SSC finals May 25 at Apple Valley High School. The Irish finished 60 points ahead of second-place Apple Valley. A sweep of the top three places in the 800 meters helped send the Irish on their way. handler Dye won in 1 minute, 56.93 seconds, Sam Temple was second in 1:57.40 and Christopher Mergens was third in 1:58.57. If Rosemount was that good in the open 800, it stands to reason the Irish would be tough in a relay that consists of four 800-meter legs. Goaner Deng, John Evenocheck, Temple and Dye won the 4x800 in 7:58.55. Seniors Joe Bjorklund (57 feet, 0 inches) and Brandt Berghuis (54-0 1/4) were first and second in the shot put, and Berghuis also was third in the discus (152-8). Shane McCallum, a senior, won the 3,200 – held during the May 24 preliminaries – in 9:26.95. The next day, he took second in the 1,600 in 4:24.26. Andrew Hausmann was first in the 400 dash (49.41), third in the 200 (22.50) and fourth in the triple jump (44-0). Other top finishers for Rosemount included Myles Phillips in the 100 (third, 11.04) and 200 (second, 22.37), Deng in the 400 (third, 49.42), Tyler Henkemeyer in the 1,600 (third, 4:25.72), Nathan Rock in the 3,200 (third, 9:29.61) and Phong Dovu in the long jump (third, 20-9). The Rosemount team of Mergens, Evenocheck, Temple and Dye was second in the 4x400 relay in 3:27.53.

Apple Valley

Sprinters had a big say in Apple Valley’s second-place finish at the SSC finals. Eagles athletes won two individual sprinting events and two sprint relays. Senior Herschel Brazell won the 100 in 11.00, four hundredths of a second

ahead of teammate Quinn Hooks, a sophomore. Jordan Crockett, a senior, won the 200 in 22.35. Kevin Davis, Crockett, Steven Wilson and Brazell won the 4x100 relay in 43.86. In the 4x200, Jalen Stewart, Hooks, Wilson and Brazell won in 1:30.44. The Eagles’ Mitch Hechsel was runner-up in the 400 in 49.62. Davis, a junior, also won an event on his own, taking first in the 110 hurdles in 15.04.

THANK YOU for holding the line on state spending.

Eastview

Almost 25 percent of the third-place Lightning’s 98.5 team points came from one event, the triple jump. Eastview athletes took the top three places, with Frank Veldman first with 46-0 1/2, Khalil Jordan second with 45-2 and Charlie Krengel third with 44-11 1/2. Krengel won the long jump with 21-9. Veldman was the top seed in the event but fouled on all his attempts in preliminaries. Ryan Lockard and Veldman were second and third in the high jump, with both clearing 6-4. Eastview senior Erik Rosvold was conference champion in the 1,600 in 4:22.75. He was second in the 3,200 in 9:26.85.

Sen. Ted Daley

Rep. Diane Anderson

Rep. Doug Wardlow

Rep. Kurt Bills

Eagan

Wildcats senior Derrick Mora won the 300 hurdles in 40.39 at the conference finals. He was second in the 110 hurdles in 15.47. Mora completed a strong performance in the SSC meet by finishing second in the long jump (21-6 1/2) and seventh in the triple jump. Eagan junior Adam Peters cleared 133 to finish third in the pole vault. The Wildcats were fifth in the boys team standings with 66 points.

Burnsville

The Blaze finished eighth at the conference finals with 35 points. Burnsville’s point potential was reduced by the absence of distance running standout Cole O’Brien, who will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury. O’Brien qualified for state in the 1,600 and 3,200 the last two years. Three Burnsville athletes finished fifth in individual events in the conference finals – Dan Nguyen (200), Abdul Salan (3,200) and Antony Odera (triple jump). The Blaze’s best relay finish was fourth by the 4x100 team of Cory Mogren, Nguyen, Jalen Dyson and Lavonte Sudberry.
