More people took the bus in first half of 2011 MVTA on pace to break ridership record set in 2008 BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS As gas prices slowly rise, so does the number of people using public transportation in the Twin Cities suburbs. The Suburban Transit Providers have reported an increase in suburban bus and transportation ridership during the first six months of 2011, including communities in the south metro. The Suburban Transit providers service 12 communities: Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Rosemount and Savage via the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority; Chaska, Chanhassen and Eden Prairie via SouthWest Transit; Prior Lake Laker Lines and Shakopee Transit offer BlueXpress service; along with Maple Grove Transit and Plymouth Metrolink. I-35E will be under repair until early to mid-October The Minnesota Department of Transportation began resurfacing 5.25 miles of I-35E between Lone Oak Road and the Mississippi River Aug. 18. The project is expected to last six to seven weeks. MnDOT says traffic will be impacted by lane, ramp and loop closures and up to four weekend full-closures that will be needed to complete the project on time. An average of 90,000 vehicles travel this section of I-35 each day. Both directions of I-35E will be resurfaced and repaired between Lone Oak Road and Highway 5. Ramps and loops will also be resurfaced and repaired to create a smoother driving surface and ensure greater road durability. Road crews will make improvements and repairs to the drainage systems, guardrails, signal systems and other technology infrastructure while the lanes are closed. Updated pedestrian crossings at I-

Eagan resident best grocery bagger in state Will compete in national tournament February 2012 in Las Vegas BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eagan resident Blake Westling knew he had it in the bag. Well, almost. After a final bag-off, the judges of the Aug. 13 Minnesota Grocer’s Association Best Bagger Competition announced Westling as the winner. “I was so excited,” said Westling, 20. “My parents said my eyes lit up and I was overwhelmed with joy.” “He’s put hours and hours into practicing and to see him focus and to see him succeed, we’re so proud of him,” said Mike Westling, Blake’s father. Blake Westling, representing the Eagan Byerly’s Grocery Store, defeated 12 other baggers at the statewide competition at the Mall of America, but had to nervously await the results. After the competition, the judges cryptically announced a final bag-off between two of the competitors. The catch was, no
one, except the judges, knew what place the bag-off was for. Westling was not among the two that competed in the bagoff. “I didn’t know where that left me and I thought I had a good run,” he said. After the bag-off, it was announced that Westling was the winner. Judges graded on four criteria: bagging speed, weight distribution between the two bags that were filled, bagging technique and style, attitude and appearance. Competing at his second state tournament in a row, Westling won $500, a trophy and, most importantly, the chance to compete for the National Grocer’s Association’s Best Bagger title Feb. 13 at the Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. He will be the first Byerly’s representative to compete in Las Vegas. Westling traveled to Las Vegas as a child and is eager to return. But, don’t expect to see him sitting at a slot machine or black jack table. Remember, he’s 20 years old. “Maybe it’s a good thing,” Blake

Hoping time runs out on obnoxious and intrusive ads Over the past decade or more I have slowly developed a rather strong aversion to basically all forms of advertising, with the exception of those in the print media. You may think I’m just saying this because it happens to be the industry in which I work, but actually this is not true, for they lack what most others unfortunately possess. About 10 or 15 years ago I stopped to fill my car with gas at a very popular station off of 494. As I was standing there, doing nothing like most others, I was startled when I suddenly began hearing a man’s voice. I had no idea where it was coming from. Imagine my surprise when I turned and noticed that a very small monitor was located along the top of the pump airing ads. Now this was a time that preceded my aversion. This began to develop soon after, so I was not too terribly annoyed by this. In fact, part of me

even thought it was clever, but not nearly as clever as the ad boards ever so strategically placed in men’s restrooms almost everywhere. Since then, as time passed and technology improved, these types of ads complemented the major sources – radio, TV and not the Internet – in a non-endearing way. How many times have you had to turn the volume on your TV down during a commercial either because the volume increased itself to catch your attention or the content was absurd? How many times have you searched the radio dial in your car to only hear multiple minutes of “Hey! Sale! Sale!” And nowadays, how much time do you think you spend
attempting to close a pop-up ad when visiting a website, only to accidentally (or not perhaps) be directed to a page trying to sell you the next greatest elixir the world has ever seen? All of these forms possess an amazing ability to annoy you for a host of reasons, these along with other sources of ads in seemingly clever locations via technology. It is reaching a point where it seems they cannot be escaped, like something out of a “B” horror film. These were my thoughts when up popped an ad on my GPS. To date, I believe I have seen ads for a hotel chain, a restaurant and another. No worries, though, as I’m sure it will soon just happen to pop up when I am watching it for the next turn I will need to make. This is not a good idea, especially when you consider distracted driving and the deaths it accounts for each and every year. To those who are responsible for this annoyance, which is
The day the war came home It’s been a few months since my previous visit, but last week I found myself driving up to a church I’ve been very familiar with for years. From baptisms to confirmations to weddings — including my own — I’ve often been back to that same church to celebrate numerous joyful and happy occasions with family and friends. This was the first funeral. I cannot and will not claim a close friendship with the departed. To do so would be a disservice to his memory. At best, I can say we were childhood buddies. It was difficult to find parking, and I ended up walking a

while to the church. Over the past decade, I’ve been lucky enough to never have to go to one of these funerals. But I can say with absolute certainty that, after 10 years, the wars our country is engaged in came home. I can’t pretend the conflicts overseas are just political maneuvering anymore; war means heroism and it means sacrifice.
I know this is the point where I am supposed to make an argument for or against the use of military force in other countries. You, the readers, might expect me to use this tragedy as an example of whatever “agenda” I might have. But, that’s just something I’m not going to do. This is a time to remember those who serve or who have served and honor them for that reason alone. Forget the politics, forget pushing for drawdowns or surges, and remember that those things mean people – people who are willing to stand up and serve their country regardless of the cost.

And just everywhere you drive these days in a metro area, you are barraged with billboards and blinking signs selling products, services, or ideas. Okay, maybe you’re not barraged, but there sure are a lot of new forms for just about any business or other entity to flash their wares. Hope is in sight, however. As technology has accounted for the variety of annoyances, it too is the source through which relief can be found. The DVR is very useful in not only eliminating commercials but also saving time when shows are recorded and saved for viewing at a later time. And the advent of Netflix, Hulu, and others I’m sure, you can lead a commercial free life, which will provide you the luxury of browsing the print ads at your convenience and on your terms.

District 196 School Boardmember Kevin Sampers announced his resignation from the board on at the end of the board’s Aug. 15. Meeting. His resignation is effective Aug. 31. After serving on the school board for 18 years, Sampers said it was time for a change. He resigned to devote more time to his new business, Naiku, an education software company that uses technology to help students and teachers create greater engagement in the learning process. Naiku, Laotian for “teacher.” was founded in November 2010, and Sampers realized this summer it was becoming difficult to juggle his board duties with his growing business. “I need to really prioritize my life differently and basically make sure that I make the business successful,” Sampers said. First elected to the school board in 1993, Sampers’ history with the district goes back almost three decades prior. In 1966, Sampers attended first grade at Northview Elementary School in Eagan and was part of the second graduating class at Apple Valley High School in 1978, he said. After college, he moved back to the district. He and his wife, Cynthia, saw their three daughters attend and later graduate from district schools. “I kept a connection all the way along for 40-plus years,” Sampers said. During his tenure on the board, Sampers said he was proud to have seen positive growth within the district, but acknowledged tough decisions were made along the way. “I think over that time we built a great culture for the district,” he said. “From
the top down in staff, everyone is trying to educate our students to our full potential.” “The biggest challenge with any board lately – you’re trying to do more with less,” he continued. “I think our district has Kevin Sampers done a great job managing the budget in tough times.” School Board Vice Chairperson Rob Duchscher said Sampers brought a wealth of business experience that he applied to district finances. “Kevin always provided a calm, business-minded view of things,” Duchscher said, who has served with Sampers for more than 11 years on the board. “I lost count of the conversations he and I have had relating school finance issues to how we would handle them in the business world. I will miss those conversations.” District Chairperson Jackie Magnuson said Sampers experience in state politics is an asset not easily replaced. “His interest in legislative issues, and his ability to talk to both legislators’ and citizens about the impact of issues at the school level will be missed,” Magnuson said. The vacant board seat will not be filled in the Nov. 8 school board election. The board will discuss an appointment process at its Sept. 12 meeting, Magnuson said. Sampers’ replacement will serve the remainder of his term, which runs through Jan. 6, 2014. Though his time on the board has ended, Sampers plans to retain a connection to the district, he said. “I’ll still stay in touch with the education issues because that’s a passion of mine,” Sampers said. Westling said of his age. “If I did win, I don’t want to spend all my money on the casino floor.� Taking first place is Westling’s goal, but he’s proud just to have earned solid standing among the best baggers in the country. “I think that just being there in Vegas is an experience in itself, but I would love to get there and compete well,� Westling said. “I’m aiming for first.� If he wins the national title, Westling will receive $10,000 and an appearance on the David Letterman Show in New York City shortly after the tournament in Las Vegas. Westling has won his Byerly’s store’s Best Bagger competition for four years in a row. Winners of individual store competitions move forward to compete against other Byerly’s winners. The winner of that tournament then faces off against the Lund’s champion. That winner is crowned the company’s “Top Dog,� which Westling has won two years in a row. The Top Dog wins a seat at the statewide tournament. Westling practiced dozens of hours in preparation for this year’s state tournament. He was assigned a bagging trainer, Dennis Calhoun, after he won the Top Dog award. Calhoun, a training specialist at Lund’s and Byerly’s grocery stores, had Westling train by bagging blindfolded to increase his muscle memory and also worked on his bagging speed. One day, he practiced bagging for three straight hours, Westling said. But, that might not have been his most grueling training exercise. “We went outside in the 106 degree heat
in the parking lot and practiced there,� Calhoun said. To simulate the competition experience, Calhoun organized for Westling to train in front of a large group of people at Byerly’s. “We’ve practiced in front of big crowds to get that scare factor and get the nerves going,� Westling said. Westling admits that his nerves got the best of him in first state competition last year. “This year, I was much more calm and collected and I didn’t let it get to me,� he said. For the national tournament, how Westling handles the stress may determine where he places. “If I can control the nerves, I can place very well,’ he said. Mike Westling says the kind of person Blake is will help him in Las Vegas. “He’s got a lot of determination,� Mike Westling said. Calhoun said Westling has a great chance to win. “Blake is one of the strongest competitors we’ve ever brought to nationals,� said Calhoun, who has trained three Lund’s state bagging champions. “I’m very confident because he handles pressure like no one else I’ve ever seen.� Westling will finish the summer working at Byerly’s before heading back to college in the fall. He is a junior at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, majoring in biology. He plans to continue his practice regimen at school, Skyping with Calhoun over the next six months. But, it’s hard for Westling not to look ahead to the national tournament. “I’m just excited and I wish it were already February,� he said.

Indian music and culture performance Aug. 30 at art park Rita Mustaphi’s Katha Dance Theatre performs Kathak, the classical dance of northern India, 10-11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Caponi Art Park, 1220 Diffley Road in Eagan. From the word katha, or story, Kathak dance is a fusion of both the Hindu and Muslim cultures. In ancient India, the storytellers performed mythological stories for village audiences using rhythmic footwork, expressive movement of the hands and face, swift turns, and elegant stances. Participants learn about Indian culture through dance as the dancers engage in a playful, spontaneous interchange with the audience. Family Fun Tuesdays meet 10-11 a.m. Tuesday mornings. Franken said providing more federal funding for metro city energy efficient projects might prove difficult, but remained hopeful help could come from Washington, as well as from the city level. “I see right now we are on incredible budge constraints,” Franken said. “It’s tough to give the kind of funding we had during the stimulus package.” Franken was appointed to the Senate’s Committee on Energy and Natural Resources this January. He is looking at ways to jumpstart the state’s economy and job market on his Renewable Energy Listening Tour this summer.

“We need to be finding ways in different areas of growth,” Franken said. “Energy efficiency is one of those jobs.” Franken’s next stop was Just Kidding Around, an early childhood care center in Lakeville, where he met with staff and children. Just Kidding Around received $2,500 in federal grant money to make improvements to classrooms and learning supplies. Franken toured the childcare center and learned about its commitment to providing a healthy learning place for children. “It’s very exciting,” said Jan Karrmann, director of Just Kidding Around, of Franken’s visit. “The grants are so worthwhile because quality, affordable education is very important.” Franken also toured Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount and Dakota Electric in Farmington.

Bus riders FROM PAGE 1 “One is obviously the increase in gas prices has people looking for alternate ways to get to work to make it cheaper for them,” Selvig said. “Secondly, some of the (buses) have really stepped up with the services they provide.” An improved service Selvig referred to are the direct routes from the MVTA, SouthWest Transit and Maple Grove Transit to the University of Minnesota. One bus rider who has taken advantage of this direct service is Tim O’Hara of Rosemount. This spring, the timing belt failed in O’Hara’s vehicle and he had to rely on public transportation to get around. Recently unemployed, O’Hara donates plasma for extra money at a plasma center near the university and takes the direct route to get there. Other times, he takes Route 442 from the Apple Valley Transit Station at Cedar Ave. and 155th Street West to the Mall of America and then hops on the lightrail to get to the university. During non-rush hour times, it costs $1.75 per route oneway. “It works out great,” O’Hara said. “You really can’t beat that (rate) with the

price of gas these days.” Taking the bus has helped O’Hara save money, but not having a car limits his travel flexibility. “I just wish there were more routes,” he said. Since O’Hara has been taking the bus for only three months, he can’t speak to an increase in ridership from last year, but he has begun to recognize more and more people on his routes. “I see a lot of regulars,” O’Hara said. The MVTA has seen a 7 percent increase for the first half of 2011 – 1,270,924 riders — compared to 1,186,182 in the first half of 2010, according to the Suburban Transit Association. The MVTA is on pace to break the record set in 2008 – 2,638,803 riders. BlueXpress Service led all systems with a more than 15 percent increase for the first six months of 2011 over the same period last year. Plymouth Metrolink saw nearly a 14 percent increase and Maple Grove Transit showed a 6.5 percent increase for the same period. Rick Shnarr, an MVTA driver for 8 years, drives Route 420, which takes passengers back and forth from Apple Valley and Rosemount. He calls his route a “feeder route,” meaning he funnels passengers to stations that take them into downtown Minneapolis, St. Paul and the University of Minnesota.

Winning back-to-back state championships is difficult enough, but if Apple Valley can win three in a row in boys soccer, it will be the stuff of legend. The Eagles, Class AA champions in 2009 and 2010 and holder of a state-record 47-game winning streak, will take the field this year with no returning starters. The Eagles knew this was coming, but the situation also presented a unique opportunity for the 105 players who showed up for the first day of tryouts Aug. 15. How many defending state championship teams have had all 11 starting positions open? “We need kids who are willing to be team players, not individuals,” Apple Valley coach Chuck Scanlon said. “As coaches, we have to know where kids can help us and where we need to put them so they can succeed.” Scanlon said last weekend he was not going to finalize the varsity roster until after scrimmages on Aug. 22, but portions of the lineup are beginning to take shape. Senior captain Derek Smith, a reserve midfielder last season, will be the Eagles’ sweeper this season. “He’s playing well and communicating well,” Scanlon said. Senior Josh Rosenthal is likely to take over in goal. Junior captain Connor Flanagan, previously a backup midfielder, will move to forward. Senior midfielder David Racine, senior defender Connor Uzlik and juniors Jorde Charles, Mitch Dawson and Matt Christiansen are among other players who could move up into starting roles this season. The Eagles also are looking at the possibility of several sophomores cracking the varsity lineup, Scanlon said.

Notebook: familiar opponents in football playoffs BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS South Suburban Conference football teams see plenty of each other during the regular season, and they will in the playoffs, too. The Minnesota State High School League, having added a seventh enrollment class for football several months ago, last week created new section alignments for the sport, which take effect in the 2012 season. Drawing the most attention, not surprisingly, were the section alignments in the new Class 6A, which will consist of the state’s 31 largest high schools plus one private school that opted up (CretinDerham Hall). The schools in Class 6A are grouped into four eight-team sections. Section 3 will have seven South Suburban Conference teams (Burnsville, Eagan, Eastview, Lakeville North, Lakeville South, Rosemount and Prior Lake) and Park of Cottage Grove from the Suburban East. Grouping conference opponents in the same section appeared to be a theme.
Class 6A, Section 4 will have seven Suburban East teams. Seven North Suburban Conference teams are in Section 5. All five Lake Conference schools are in Section 6. Brainerd, the only outstate team in Class 6A, was assigned to Section 5. In the first round of playoffs, teams will play within their own sections. In the second round, the four winning teams from one section will be matched against the four winners from another section. The section-vs.-section matchups are determined by random draw. Once the field is down to eight teams, coaches will seed the top four teams, which will be matched against the unseeded squads by blind draw. This format makes it possible for teams from the same conference and section to meet in the Class 6A championship game. Former Rosemount High School and University of Minnesota running standout Heather (Dorniden) Kampf broke her own women’s record in the Rosemount High School alumni cross country meet Aug. 19, finishing in 11 minutes, 23 seconds. Kampf, now running professionally in Europe, finished more than one minute ahead of two Rosemount varsity runners, Hannah Grim and Tori Grund. The varsity girls, however, won the team competition. In the men’s alumni race, June 2011 Rosemount graduate Shane McCallum won in 10:09.3. Chris Massey, a 2009 alumnus, was second with Rosemount senior Calvin Lehn taking third. The alumni defeated the varsity by 15 points in the team competition. Rosemount’s boys open the season ranked third among Class AA teams. Rosemount is 12th in the state girls preseason rankings.
South Suburban Conference football won’t start until Sept. 1, but several other sports will have their conference openers this week. Two-time defending state Class AA boys soccer champion Apple Valley, riding a 47-game winning streak, plays Owatonna at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at Johnny Cake Ridge Park. Three other Sun-Current area soccer teams that qualified for state last year also will be in action Thursday. Eagan’s girls are home against Rochester Mayo and Lakeville South’s girls play host to Rochester John Marshall in two games that start at 5 p.m. Lakeville North’s boys are at Rochester Mayo for a 7 p.m. game. In volleyball action Thursday, fifthranked Lakeville South is home against Northfield at 7 p.m. The first round of South Suburban girls tennis matches will be Thursday.

AV Eagles FROM PAGE 19 The one 2010 season starter who would have been eligible to return, forward Hudson Fasching, has joined the USA Hockey Under-17 national team in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Apple Valley soccer team lost a player capable of scoring 25-30 goals, Scanlon said. A year ago, the Eagles outscored opponents 100-5 en route to a second consecutive state championship and ninth overall. They used their skill and athletic ability to
put relentless pressure on opponents, and they had forwards capable of finishing. Because of all the new players, Scanlon said the Eagles would have to modify their style. “We’ll have to be a little more cautious, a little more defensive,” he said. “Our goalkeeper and defense are inexperienced. They’ll do well in time, but right now they’re inexperienced.” On Aug. 20, the Eagles scrimmaged Richfield, Minnehaha Academy and Eagan at home, defeating the first two handily and edging Eagan 1-0. The Eagan result was a bit of a surprise because the Wildcats have several return-
ing starters from a team that was second to Apple Valley in last year’s Section 3AA playoffs. “Some of our guys got beat up a little bit at the start of the scrimmages,” Scanlon said. “I said, ‘I warned you. This is varsity soccer now.’ “But the guys adjusted. They stepped up and did a nice job against Eagan.” Apple Valley’s 47 consecutive victories over the last two seasons is already a state record. The Eagles would have go unbeaten through the entire regular season to break Stillwater’s state-record 62-game undefeated streak, set in the mid-1990s. Apple Valley also has a chance to be

only the second team to win three consecutive Class AA championships. Edina accomplished the feat in from 1999-2001. Talking about records might seem presumptuous for a team with all new starters, but the Eagles haven’t avoided the subject. “We go into every game expecting to win,” Scanlon said. “We’ve told the kids, ‘Now it’s your turn to step up your game.’” Apple Valley begins its season with five consecutive home games at Johnny Cake Ridge Park, including the season against Owatonna at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25. The Eagles will play Holy Family at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.
