Proceeds from Aug. 6 event to benefit Rein in Sarcoma Foundation BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS A group of teens has learned that the power of friendship can go much further than they ever expected. Ten girls from Apple Valley, self-named as “the committee,” are determined to continue the annual “Race for Grace” in honor of their friend, Grace Nelson, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, a rhybdomyosarcoma, at the age of 14. Sarcoma is a type of cancer that develops from certain tissues, like bone or muscle. The third-annual Race for Grace take place Aug. 6, Eastview High School, Apple Valley. Registration begins 9 a.m. Featured this year will be a one-mile walk-run 9 a.m., and a five-kilometer walk-run 10:15 a.m. All proceeds from the Race for Grace are donated to the Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation for cancer research, support and education with an ultimate goal of finding a cure as well as assisting those currently fighting the disease. Grace, 16, underwent chemotherapy for a year followed by a six weeks of radiation. Though the young fighter said she was in good health these days, the news at the time was frightening to her closest friends. “I think we’re proud to call each other best friends. Even though we were only 14 at the time, they all stuck by my side,” she said. In the past two years, the fundraiser has netted more than $57,000. The first year alone yielded more than $33,000. “My mom always joked it would be 100 people and a couple thousand dollars, and it ended up being a lot more than they expected,” Grace said. The effort came as welcome surprise to Sue Wyckoff, board member of the St. Paul-based Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation. RACE FOR GRACE: TO PAGE 2

Eagan metal band Royal Ace performed July 6 at the Teen Battle of the Bands at the Eagan Market Fest Family Fun Night. Royal Ace won the competition and will compete at the Dakota County Fair Battle of the Bands and also perform at the Minnesota State Fair. Second place band Bison will also perform at the Minnesota State Fair. Each band in the competition had 15-20 minutes to perform a combination of original and cover songs. Race for Grace FROM PAGE 1 “We were of course blown away because we never expected anything like that. They are determined young women, and I’m sure they will do well,” Wyckoff said. The event was largely the brainchild of Nelson’s friend, Aubree Tsurusaki. After learning that her best friend since elementary school had been diagnosed in 2009, she was motivated to do something, with a little help from her mother, Karen. “In March 2009, my mom and I decided to do a race,” Aubree said. “It just came to us, and we just did it.” Aubree soon learned that she needed a little help – enter the committee. The group of young girls went into full-court press by spreading event information in as many locations as they could, such as their school, area businesses, coffee shops, gas stations, a library and a few other locations. “I started asking them to come up with logo ideas for our shirts and motto ideas,” Aubree said, to which Halley Purkey added, “It helps to know people.” The second year of the Race for Grace did not prove as fruitful as the first, largely due to very poor weather, but this did

not dissuade the young women from carrying on with their mission. Actually, the first two years provided them with a solid foundation for future events. “It was harder because it was raining,” committee member Purkey said. “It was a learning experience, that’s for sure.” Fellow committee member Sara Pohl was quick to add that the previous years also provided the group with ideas about what to improve upon for this year’s event. In addition to the one-mile and fivekilometer walk-runs, the 2011 Race for Grace will have a twist. “This year we are honoring three people who have at some point been diagnosed with sarcoma cancer,” said Karen Tsurusaki, Aubree’s mother. The three honorees include a 19-yearold who is undergoing treatment for Ewing’s sarcoma and a 32-year survivor of rhybdomyosarcoma, as well as a woman who lost her battle with cancer last winter. As for this year’s event, committee members said they had a few people registered but not nearly as many as they would like. The committee members, however, are not too discouraged yet. EDUCATION NEWS D. 191 still seeking new board members Residents can apply for a vacancy on the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 Board of Education created by the recent resignation of long-time board member Gail Morrison. Applications will be accepted until 1 p.m. Friday, July 29. Interested applicants can visit www.isd191.org and download a form or apply online. Paper applications are also available at the district’s Administrative Services Center, 100 River Ridge Court, Burnsville. As of noon July 6, only one person had applied – Paul Butche, 12829 Briar Court, Burnsville. Candidates must be at least 21, have been a resident of the school district for at least 30 days and have not been convicted of certain offenses. The time commitment is 20-40 hours a month. Business meetings are twice a month and there are also special meetings, work sessions, committee meetings, trainings and seminars. Board members receive $500 a month. At a public work session on Aug. 4, the Board of Education will interview all eligible applicants. At a regular business

meeting Aug. 18, board members will determine an appointee by a majority vote. The new board member will be sworn in during the board meeting Sept. 1 and will serve until Dec. 2012.

Annual Bluegrass Americana Music Weekend July 22-24

Despite the state government shutdown, Eagan officials want the public to know that all city offices and facilities will remain open with regular hours of operation, and local public safety operations are not affected by the state shutdown. Eagan City Hall, Cascade Bay Water Park, the Eagan Community Center and all other City facilities remain open during regular business hours in July. City operations such as police and fire protection, the City Clerk’s office for business licensing, voter registration and solicitor permits, other City permits and inspections, engineering, parks and recreation programs, water utilities, the Eagan Civic Arena and the Blast, are all locally funded and remain open and are largely unaffected by the state government shutdown. The second annual Rosemount Bluegrass Americana Music Weekend will be July 22-24 at the Rosemount Central Park, 2875 145th St. W. City says be aware of natural gas leaks When residents turn their heat off and the air conditioning is turned on high, natural gas can be forgotten. However, natural gas leaks are a danger year-round. According to CenterPoint Energy, the metro area has seen a growing number of gas leaks due to copper pipe theft. To reduce the risk of a gas leak, residents leaving properties vacant for an extended period of time are encouraged to contact CenterPoint Energy at 612-321-4680 to arrange to have their gas meter turned off. Also, if suspicious activity near or around a vacant property is noticed, residents should call 9-1-1 immediately. Lastly, if a resident smells, hears or sees a natural gas leak, he or she should leave the area immediately on foot. Residents should also avoid using electric switches, telephones and vehicles in the vicinity of a gas leak. Company says spectacles aid concentration in kids with ADHD BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Anyone who could benefit from improved concentration needn’t look any further than one Apple Valley company. My Focus Eyewear, 15601 Foliage Ave., announced July 1 it had developed My Focus Glasses, described as a unique, common sense tool to improve concentration while reading or studying. The company also indicated the glasses have proven useful in those dealing with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. “It was just something that came to me,” said Ken Finochiaro, owner of My Focus Eyewear. “[The glasses] were originally just to improve reading in such places as study hall or work.” But after talking to people with ADHD, Finochiaro said that they indicated the glasses were helping them as well, which led to further studies. Finochiaro located a pair of young children’s parents who agreed to participate in a 30-day study. “The conclusion at the end was that the child did improve,” Finochiaro said. The 65-year-old Finochiaro, who has four patents to his name, explained that the glasses, though tested on children, were not for play, such as riding bikes. The design of the eyewear restricts one’s view. “The peripheral vision is restricted. It’s only a narrow view you’re getting of the page,” Finochiaro said, “so [the glasses] compel you to focus on the page. By having better focus, you have better comprehension.” The company performed a pilot study on the effectiveness of the glasses that looked at brainwave activity and behaviors associated with attention, reading and cognitive performance while using the glasses. Testing methods included the use of an elec-

product’s effectiveness, derived from a separate study performed in 1990. “Again, when the children wore the glasses it increased a key-firing pattern for mental performance and concentration … on the surface of the brain by an average of 42 percent,” the website claims. Nicole Foesch of Cannon Falls is a parent of a young boy who participated in the 30-day study. Her son, however, has never been diagnosed with ADHD. “My son struggles with reading,” Foesch said. “He struggles with focus in the classroom. According to Foesch, family members suggested medications for her son, but Foesch was against that option and didn’t consider it. During the 30 days, Foesch maintained a daily journal reflecting her son’s improvement in concentration. “I saw more willingness to read at home as well as in the community. His confidence increased,” she said. “He really liked them. He commented on how they were able to help him focus. It was a big change.” Foesch added that her son only wore the glasses at home during the trial period, but after the 30 days, she noted that her son began wearing the glasses at school for reading. The Cannon Falls resident said she would recommend the glasses to anyone, saying they are worth trying. “I truly believe in the glasses. I think they are cost-effective,” Foesch said. “They look cool. They don’t look like special glasses. Uniform donation drive helps outfit scouts for camp BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS Kris Hinderscheid of Hastings is the treasurer for Boy Scout Troop 534. Her family goes through a lot of uniforms. She and her husband have four sons who have all been involved in Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts. The boys outgrow uniforms quickly. Kris’s husband also volunteers as an assistant scoutmaster and must wear a uniform. When Kris’s oldest son, 13-year-old Kalvin, was nominated by his scoutmaster to attend the exclusive, weeklong Grey Wolf Leadership Camp in Wisconsin this year, he needed to be outfitted with a full uniform first. “We wanted to make sure he had everything he needed,” she said. Hinderscheid believes the uniform is an important part of the Scouting experience. “When the boys wear the uniform, they should be wearing it with pride,” she said. Kalvin thinks the uniform is an identifying mark for Scouts and it lets others know “that guy’s in Scouts.” Hinderscheid was willing to invest in the full outfit for Kalvin, which includes shirts, a neckerchief, shorts,

But buying everything new would have placed some financial pressure on the singleincome household. Hinderscheid turned to the Boy Scouts Northern Star Council uniform exchange program. The exchange program is available twice a month and

allows scouts to come to the office in Golden Valley and find used uniforms for free with a suggested donation if the family feels able to give. The program is supported largely by uniform donations collected during the Scouting for Uniforms campaign held by the Northern Star Council and Pilgrim Cleaners during the month of July. Hinderscheid reached out to other members of Troop 534 and collected a list of “orders” of items needed by scouts in the area. Then three families made the trek to visit the exchange and fill as many orders as they could. Kalvin found everything he needed, and Hinderscheid estimates that about 12 other scouts in the troop also received needed pieces for their uniforms. “It’s a great program,” Hinderscheid said. “It’s a blessing for many people.” She estimates that paying the suggested donations for uniforms cost her less than an eighth of the price for new uniforms. “For us to be able to outfit our son to have the privilege to go to camp was huge,” she said. Hinderscheid said when her boys are

done with a uniform, they pass it on to others. She appreciates how the exchange program makes it easy to share uniforms with those who need them. “I just think that it gives you an opportunity to give back, and it makes it very affordable for families, especially in this economy,” she said. “And there’s no sense in wasting items … someone should be able to reuse them.” It’s especially easy to donate uniforms during the month of July. Uniforms can be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The nearest location can be found at pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Is relief finally in sight for Highway 169 users? Each week I travel on Highway 169, north in the morning and south in the evening. Usually I’m able to avoid the bulk of rush-hour traffic but not always. Recently, while northbound, I saw a law enforcement officer in an unmarked vehicle pulled to the side of the road. At first glance it appeared to be a stranded motorist, but I realized a moment later that what I was seeing was a very welcoming site – the officer was aiming a speed gun at traffic. Later that afternoon I left the office in Osseo on assignment. While traveling southbound, I saw two squad cars on the shoulder, along with the vehicle one of the officers had pulled over. Within 10 seconds I saw another squad car traveling north, lights and siren both on. I thought to myself, “Finally.”

I was actually relieved that this highway was being policed. For months I’ve been commuting to and from Osseo feeling a little like a pace car in a race. The vast majority of the travelers using this road either do not know the speed limit or they do not care. I’m not talking about five to seven miles per hour over the speed limit. I am talking about an easy 15 to 20 over. I said that I feel like a pace car because I’m among those who drive much closer to the speed limit, in the right lane of course. Generally speaking, in fact, those who know me are fully

LETTERS TO EDITOR State politicians should be praised To the editor: We could not have asked for a more perfect summer atmosphere than what we Eagan parade-goers experienced during this past Eagan July 4th Fun Fest parade. As a parade observer I was especially delighted to hear the many encouraging comments such as “Keep up the good work” and “stand strong” so spontaneously offered as the contingents for State Representatives Doug Wardlow and Diane Anderson, and State Senator Ted Daley walked the parade route. These exclamations affirm that the desire for fiscally responsible leadership, the sense of and for personal responsibility, the appreciation of an entrepreneurial spirit as well as freedom of enterprise is forefront in the minds and spirits of my fellow Eaganites and is embodied in the personal characters of

When you combine this with what appears to be 90 percent of travelers grossly exceeding the speed limit, it is not the most comfortable feeling. The high speeds are one thing, but when you sprinkle in several of those who wish to weave in and out of traffic – passing on the right and making dangerous (often illegal) lane changes – then the chance for an accident increases greatly. Plus, I have had the privilege of being on the receiving end of a one-finger salute from one of these maniacs, but I suppose that should come as no surprise. It amazes me that Highway 169 from Osseo down to I-494, in my months of experience at least, has been so lightly policed. Actually I can’t even recall the

last time I saw any law enforcement vehicle on this highway during the morning or afternoon drive times. It amazes me even more that there have been no major accidents recently, at least none I’ve driven by or heard about. Regardless, it seems that help is on its way. I was never more pleased to see the officer with the speed gun and the other officers with what appeared to be more than your average speeding stop due to the two squads and a third on its way. I hope this was not a coincidence but instead an increased effort to patrol this highway and make it safe for other users. For those who travel this road and fit into the 90 percent, I say leave earlier. It is as simple as that. For the maniacs, well, you should not be allowed to drive. Period.

Government shutdown affects women’s shelters BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS State government may have shut down but domestic violence goes on with little regard to the political wrangling in St. Paul. For two Dakota County shelters run by 360 Communities,, the shutdown has affected their daily operations. One location has closed while the other remains open – for now. The Hastings Lewis House, a shelter for women and children affected by domestic violence, has been temporarily shuttered, but the Eagan location will remain open, though with a reduced staff. Nine of 16 employees were furloughed at the Eagan location, said Mary Ajax, CEO and President of 360 Communities. 360 Communities is a nonprofit organization located in Burnsville whose goal is to empower people to shape the future of their communities. The two Lewis House shelters are able to serve the community largely due to state funding. The shelters receive $1.2 million from the state annually, a significant portion of their budget. A week into the shutdown, those funds remained frozen. The shelter must have at least one professionally trained staff member onsite at all times. One to two volunteers are also present at all time. Since the Hastings location has closed, some of its residents moved to Eagan while others made alternative living arrangements. “For all those who wanted to move, we moved them,” said Poh Lin Khoo, Director of Marketing and Communications for 360 Communities. Staff members have set up cots in the shelter’s playroom. The Eagan location was initially in danger of closing, Ajax said, but a significant monetary donation allowed the doors to remain open. The donor, who Ajax wants to keep anonymous, first donated money to 360 Communities in 2009 and controls the distribution of the funds. When the donor learned the shelter may have to close, the donor released $100,000 to keep the shelter open. “Thank you so much,” Ajax said in reference to the donor. “Now we feel like we can breathe.” Ajax said the donation should keep the Eagan shelter open through August if needed. If the governor and legislature have not reached an agreement

when the donated money runs out, the Eagan location will likely close as well. 360 Communities is asking for community members and businesses to help keep the Eagan location open with financial donations. “We’re going to do everything in our power to keep it open,” Ajax said. “We are absolutely committed to being here for people.” In a July 5 filing, Gov. Mark Dayton said that crucial state services should include counseling and services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes. In addition, the governor said that childcare assistance and services for the homeless should be included. But, Ajax hasn’t been informed when and if 360 Communities will receive any state funding. “The safety of the people is really life and death and these should be essential state services,” Ajax said. One resident of the Eagan Lewis House has noticed a difference in the few days since the state government shutdown. Community outreach programs and support groups for the shelter’s residents have disappeared. “What the staff does is brings (residents) in to a place where they are ready to start their life again and keep going,” said Monica, who wished to keep her real name anonymous because her husband does not know where she is staying. “That’s the most valuable thing they give us and when things get shut down, that’s the thing that we miss,” Monica said. “They’re spread pretty thin right now.” Monica has been living at the Eagan Lewis House since the beginning of June with two of her four children. She left her home to escape the three-year sexual abuse she endured from her husband. Before moving to the shelter, she spent more than a month sleeping in her car during the days in a school parking lot to avoid the abuse, she said. As of July 7, the state government remained shut down and Monica was hopeful a deal would be met soon for the well being of Lewis House residents. “A place like this is invaluable to anybody,’ she said. “You never plan for this to happen.” 360 Communities encourages people to send all referrals to the Lewis House at 651-452-7288. New clothing store caters to the under-7 crowd, moms-to-be BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Lakeville business owner Kate Stockman believes she has more than just another boutique. From her perspective, it is much more unique. Stockman, a resident of Prior Lake, opened Posh Baby Boutique, 20770 Holyoke Ave., Lakeville, in mid-May. Since then, the new business owner said her business is doing much better than she expected, and she plans to expand her inventory in the near future. Stockman’s venture in the business world began sooner than she expected, saying she originally had a five-year plan. “This wasn’t supposed to happen for another four years,” Stockman said. “I was going to do a nanny business and focus on that, and I thought it would take four years to get enough money to open this.” But a little luck with regard to her store location and the help of a family friend, Dee Sampson, was all it took to get her business up and running ahead of plan.

“She was the only one who gave me positive feedback and good advice,” Stockman said. “She was really supportive.” According to Stockman, her friend is not only a business owner herself but also owns a baby business. “We actually use some of their products in our store,” Stockman said. The new store features baby clothing for children up to 6 years of age, accessories, maternity clothing and a lot of gifts for baby showers, as well as gifts for moms. According to Stockman, however, providing merchandise that cannot be found in any nearby store is one small part of her business philosophy. “Customer service is number one,” she said. “I know what it feels like to shop in a store and not receive any help.” Expanding on this, Stockman indicated that she makes an extra effort to listen to her customers, get an idea of their needs, accommodate them as much as possible and provide them a good shop-

In fact, Stockman said that she has ordered much merchandise based solely on conversations with some of her customers. “I am really focused on getting to know my customers,” she said. “I want them to feel that they had a great shopping experience.” This formula appears to be working as Stockman not only referenced the positive feedback but also the number of customers walking through the door. “Business is better than we expected,” she said. “We have been very, very busy.” Stockman gets help from her niece Kyla Krohn. She says another pair of eyes is always handy. “I think it is always good to have a second opinion,” Stockman said, adding that Kyla goes through catalogues from different companies and identifies good merchandise. “It doesn’t hurt that it is someone younger who knows what the hot trends are,” Stockman added.

The entrepreneur also cited the location of her store as another advantage. “At first I had an idea of opening a shop, but there were too many boutiques around. I needed something unique,” she said. “This really, in this area, is the only baby boutique.” To the best of her knowledge from working in the field, she indicated that one would have to drive 20 to 30 minutes to find another boutique with the same merchandise. “This type of merchandise can’t be found at … major department stores,” she said about her experience at these stores. Stockman said she intends to expand upon her current line of merchandise within the next month. According to Stockman, the store will feature clothing for those older than 6 years of age, which she described as the “tween” years – not quite teenaged but close. As for the chosen name of her business, Stockman simply smiled and said, “It was a cute name and just kind of fit.”

BV community garden growing in popularity BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS For a few Burnsville residents, putting down roots in the city goes beyond where they call home. Thirty-two garden plots were recently made available to Burnsville residents to use for planting vegetables at Wolk Park, 13800 Parkwood Lane. The Wolk Community Garden is the second such garden in the city. Burnsville resident Wube Hailu was at the garden June 17, checking his plants progress after two days of rain. In his two garden beds, Hailu is growing Big Boy and Roma tomatoes, basil, lettuce, green and jalapeno peppers, rosemary, spinach and peas. Formerly of Ethiopia where he worked in the Department of Agriculture, gardening comes naturally to Hailu. He lives in a townhouse with no garden space and appreciates the land he can now use. “It’s wonderful,” said Hailu, who spends one to two hours each afternoon at the garden. Sal Nhean, formerly of Cambodia, also spent time at the garden June 17. He and his wife are growing vegetables to use for Cambodian stir frys and soups. Currently growing in their garden are eggplant, bell and jalapeno peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, parsley, and Cambodian mint. Like Hailu, the Nheans live in a townhouse with no land for planting vegetables. “I’m so happy, so happy,” Sal Nhean said of his new garden. “I’ve got my energy back to plow the soil.” If the plot space is used efficiently, there is ample room to grow a bounty of fresh food, said JJ Ryan of the Burnsville Parks & Recreation Department. “In the space they’re allowed, a family of four can be sustained for a year if they plant properly,” Ryan said. That’s the idea behind the neighborhood gardens: to provide a venue for families to become sustainable and feed themselves. “It’s another great amenity to our park system and the residents get this nice benefit,” Ryan said. The first Burnsville community garden was created in 2008 at Neill Park and has been very successful, Ryan said. Residents have been on plot space waiting lists for the gardens and demand from the community sparked the need for a second garden. The city planned for a second commu-

nity garden as part of its Capital Improvement Plan, but had no money to devote to the project. Last summer, the city was approached by the Woodhill Urban Agricultural Group, a nonprofit organization that wanted to partner with the city to create a second community garden at Wolk Park. This park had plenty of unused green space and provided an ideal garden spot on the west side of the city, Ryan said. The city did not contribute any money to the project, but did help till the land and dig fence posts holes for the garden fencing. Ryan emphasized that the project would not have been completed without Woodhill. “Where we’ve been able to help them out is with our equipment and our time…but this group has really done the work,” Ryan said.” Woodhill implemented the plan and installed the garden with the help of many local organizations. South Forest Design created the garden design and helped install the garden fences and stakes. Valley Natural Foods provided funds to water the garden and also assisted with the installation. Lastly, the South Metro Vineyard Church – located adjacent to the park – ran a water line to the park so gardeners could have access to the water. Woodhill founders Tom and Elizabeth Kackman founded the group as a way to “foster healthy living for the community,” Elizabeth Kackman said. She sees organic, healthy food as a form of preventative medicine, which ties into her basis for helping create this community garden. “We have a passion for health and wellness and helping people who are at higher risk for disease,” Elizabeth Kackman said. Burnsville resident Rachel Skoog has also seized the opportunity to use the community garden. She is growing tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, cabbage, rainbow Swiss chard, cucumbers, and celery. Skoog said the garden has given her something much more lasting than growing vegetables. “This is my first year using a community garden and from my experience so far, I have enjoyed meeting others in the community,” Skoog said. “I probably would never have met them in my day-today life, but through the garden we have COMMUNITY GARDEN: TO PAGE 11

Georgia Mae Mount, age 65, of Luck, WI died Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at her daughter’s home in Buffalo. Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Fish Lake Lutheran Church in Harris, MN with Pastor Dale Stiles officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A luncheon reception will follow the service in the lower level of the church. Georgia Mae Mount was born September 9, 1945 in Grantsburg, WI to Lewis and Stella (Workman) Rumpel. She graduated from Unity High School in Balsam, WI with the class of 1963 and went on to complete beautician school. Georgia worked as a beautician and waitress for many years. She enjoyed reading, solving puzzles, playing bridge and being with family. She is survived by her children & their spouses, Georgine & Shawn Lusk of Buffalo, Christine & Scott Kapp of Cushing, WI, Terri & Eric Seljeskog of Rapid City, SD and Matt Mount & Jeanne Johnson of Luck, WI; sister, Nancy Bengtson of Harris; brothers, Spike & Diane Mayes of Fredrick, WI and Billy Mayes of Fredrick, WI; ten grandchildren, Jeremy, Katie, Faith, Abigail, Gracie, Samantha, Danielle, Annika, Cashton and Noah; a great grandchild that is due in December; and many nieces and nephews. Summer may be a down time for donations to area food shelves, but thanks to the efforts of the business community, shelves are not empty. Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce’s fifth-annual food drive is under way through Friday, Aug. 12. Chamber officials are encouraging members to participate in the event to help stock the food shelves at 360 Communities and the Eagan-Lakeville Resource Center. According to 360 Communities Lead Director of Engagement Doreen L’Allier, the summer presents a particularly difficult challenge for food shelves. Donations dry up, which is often the result of families being busy with vacations and other nonbusiness partners experience down time of their own. The 360 Communities organization has benefitted from the annual chamber food drive for the past five years, since it has been in existence. “It’s really good that people are working to support the hungry,” L’Allier said, adding that the chamber’s leadership in the annual drive is essential to the organization’s success in the summer. L’Allier, however, did indicate that her organization will be partnering with another group over the summer. “If people donate cash to 360 Communities during July – only the month of July – Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless will match up to $4,000,” she said of the St. Paul-based organization. For the Lakeville Resource Center, this year will be its first in the 2011 chamber food drive. “It is extremely timely in responding to the increase in need for food support and the decrease in donations,” said LRC Executive Director Lisa Horn. “This is the right time to respond for the chamber.” Providing a conservative estimate, Horn said that there can be a 20 to 30 percent increase in need during the summer

One other reason is free and reducedprice lunches, which are offered during the school year. “With many of those families, the kids are getting breakfast and lunch during school,” Horn said, adding that because the children have no access to school lunches during summer break, this puts

a strain on families’ food budgets. According to Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Todd Bornhauser, the annual drive is showing no signs of slowing down. “[The food drive] usually continues to grow year after year, of businesses that participate and also the amount of food collected,” he said. “Other chamber members will also involve their employees.” Bornhauser added that once again the chamber will award prizes to companies and employees based on the most pounds of donated food and the most pounds per employee. The chamber will celebrate this year’s drive Wednesday, Aug. 24, during the seventh annual Lakeville Chamber Twins Night.

PUBLIC SAFETY Mexican citizens living in AV face drug charges Two Mexican citizens living in Apple Valley are facing felony drug charges and possible deportation, according to Dakota County Attor ney James Backstrom. Geraldo Sanchez Ramos, 34, has been charged with one count of aiding and abetting in the second de g ree, while Yesenia PonceCarbajal, 26, has been charged with one count of possession with intent to sell in the second degree, according to criminal complaints provided by the Dakota County Judicial Center. Ag ents of the Dakota County Drug Task Force apprehended both individuals June 30 in Apple Valley. Seventy-seven pounds of marijuana, with an estimated street value of $77,000, was found in their car and place of residence. Also seized during the ar rest was more than $37,000 in cash. Both Ramos and Ponce-Carbajal reside in the 13900 block near Holyoke Avenue, according to the complaints, and both individuals f ace a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison and a fine of $500,000. Dakota County Attor ney James Backstrom indicated that this was one of the larger seizures of marijuana in Dakota County within recent years. Backstrom also noted that Ramos had previously been deported from the U.S. twice. “We believe this is part of a large,

illegal drug smuggling operation from Mexico,” Backstrom said. “This seizure demonstrates the continuing problem of marijuana use in our community. Illegal drug use and distribution endangers public safety every day.” Ramos and Ponce-Carbajal made their first court appearance July 1. Judge Robert King set bail for Ramos at $175,000 without conditions and $150,000 with conditions. PonceCarbajal’s bail was set at $150,000 without conditions and $100,000 with conditions. As of July 7, Ramos had been released on bail and Ponce-Carbajal was in the Ramsey County Workhouse.

LV Fire Department responds to garage fire At 1 a.m. July 4, members of the Lakeville Fire Department were dispatched to a possible garage fire located at 16953 Garcia Way, Lakeville. Members of the Lakeville Police Department on the scene confirmed that two of four units of a detached garage were on fire. The fire department responded from three stations, including two engines, one ladder truck and one rescue truck, in addition to an Allina ambulance. Crews attacked the fire and stopped it from spreading to the other two units of the garage. The first two units suffered heavy fire damage, and the third unit had minor smoke and water damage. The fire is under investigation, but fireworks are suspected to be the cause. There were no injuries to report. This was the third fire related to fireworks over the holiday weekend.

New baseball exhibit hopes to hit sweet spot with history fans BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Baseball enthusiasts and history buffs alike will be treated to a special exhibit this month at the Dakota County Burnhaven Library. “For the Love of the Game,” an exhibit that traces the history of AfricanAmerican baseball players who contributed to the sport in Minnesota, will be on display at the library through the middle of August. The exhibit’s curator is Frank M. White, whose father, Louis V. White Jr., played on the all-black baseball team Twin City Colored Giants in the 1940s. White Jr. batted over .500 when he played for the Mechanic Arts High School team in 1946, a St. Paul City Conference record that still stands. White created the exhibit to tell the stories of the African-American baseball players who are largely lost to time. “My focus is really the guys that played in the 40s and 50s because they’re guys that were great athletes, great baseball players and nobody knows about them,” White said. “I wanted to share a history and sharing that story helps add to the legacy – not only of Minnesota baseball but of Minnesota black baseball.”

White approached the Ramsey County Historical Society in fall 2009 to create the exhibit. The Metropolitan Library Service Agency decided put the exhibit on tour early this year. Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund support the cost, and the exhibit has toured to libraries in Maplewood, Fridley and Shakopee, among other cities. Maggie Hein, a librarian at the Burnhaven Library, encouraged people viewing the exhibit to feel a connection with the cultural diversity within the city of Burnsville. “It’s a piece of legacy and history that hasn’t been completely told yet,” Hein said. “It’s a way to celebrate the diversity of our clientele – our patrons here at our library.” The exhibit highlights many of the players of these all-black Minnesota teams. The state never boasted a Negro League team, but often times Negro League teams would barnstorm – play exhibition games – against the local all-black teams in the state to generate more income and make ends meet. White’s father was actually recruited to play for the Negro League’s Kansas City Monarchs by Buck O’Neill, who went on to be the first African-American coach in Major League Baseball. Family obligations kept White Jr. home in St. Paul.

“I’m also sure my mom wouldn’t let my dad traipse around the country playing baseball,” White said, adding his grandmother wanted him to stay home and raise his son (Frank M. White) who was born Louis White Jr.’s junior year of high school. Historical timelines, uniforms, baseball bats and gloves are featured in the exhibit, as well as many photographs White has been able to acquire. Ramsey County Historical Society curator and archivist Mollie Spillman says additions are still being made to the exhibit from people whose relatives played on allblack baseball teams. “Families are excited to share their fathers stories, their grandfathers stories and photographs, which were largely unpublished before their deaths,” Spillman said. The list of players who played on allblack teams in the state is filled with many who went on to highly successful baseball careers. “I think people are going to be amazed at the list of people who played here in Minnesota,” White said. African-American Minnesota Twins players are featured in the exhibit, White said. The exhibit was to be featured at

the 2011 Twins Fest, but the collapse of the Metrodome and relocation of the festival prevented the exhibit from showing. TwinsFest 2012 will hopefully feature “For the Love of the Game,” White said. Part of the exhibit deals with informing people that there were segregated baseball teams in a northern state such as Minnesota, White said. Many people he has met are surprised to learn that. Spillman agrees that this part of history is worth telling. “[The exhibit] gives recognition to outstanding athletes that were denied participation in many locations because of the color of their skin or the language they spoke,” she said. The exhibit is special in that it’s human-oriented and an unearthing of their stories, Spillman said. “It’s the history of people,” Spillman said. “It’s a personal story and I think everybody can relate to that in some way – about hardships, about triumphs and about accomplishments.” For more information about the exhibit, go to dakotacounty.us/library or call 952-891-0300. Former Burnsville resident brings play back home BY MATTHEW HANKEY â&#x20AC;˘ SUN NEWSPAPERS Former Burnsville resident Kim Schultz is returning home this month to tell a story unfamiliar to many Americans. Schultzâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s play, â&#x20AC;&#x153;No Place Called Home,â&#x20AC;? will have a four-day run at the Illusion Theater in Minneapolis July 1417 as part of the theaterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fresh Inkâ&#x20AC;? series, which features new, often experimental shows each summer. Schultz, who lives in New York City, portrays 12 displaced Iraqi refugees who have escaped Saddam Husseinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dictatorship and the U.S. military occupation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are very excited about Kimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s play,â&#x20AC;? said Sherry Mooney, Assistant Director of Communications at Illusion Theater. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our real focus is to put on productions that touch on current world issues. We think this piece is a perfect fit.â&#x20AC;? The impetus for the play began with Intersections International, a New Yorkbased social justice organization that commissioned Schultz, Amikaeyla Gaston and six other American artists for a one-month visit to Jordan, Lebanon and

Syria to speak with Iraqi refugees, learn their stories and give them a voice. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These are voices largely unheard by Americans,â&#x20AC;? said Schultz. Hearing these stories and soaking them took their toll on her emotionally, Schultz said. By the end of the trip, she was near her witâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s end when she met an Iraqi man, Omar, and fell in love with him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In a way, Omar saved me, because I was at my bottom and here was this one man who showed me humanity and compassion and loved me and kind of brought me back â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of the basis for the play,â&#x20AC;? Schultz said. The love story between Schultz and Omar is weaved throughout her portrayal of a dozen Iraqis. The Iraqis Schultz portrays run the gamut of people she met on her trip, she said. She plays a woman in her 60s who had to flee Iraq because her husband sold alcohol, leaving their adult daughter behind. She plays an old man with a big laugh who teaches the audience how to do an Iraqi dance, and who is concerned with legacy he will leave. She plays a child who tells stories to the audience, all of which deal with death and loneliness. The plight of Iraqi refugees is largely overshadowed by news coverage of the military occupation in the country. Intersections International wanted to tell their stories through art, not traditional media, to humanize the dangers the refugees face every day. “Hopefully, the love story opens their hearts and they can see these Iraqis as people and not what the press often portrays them as,” Schultz said. Gaston said was working with the refugee children and sharing her musicals gifts with them was one of the project’s most poignant moments for her. “Despite our differences with respect to language, we really connected with the music because it’s such a universal language,” Gaston said. The play first opened off-Broadway in October 2010 under the direction of Sarah Cameron Sunde. Gaston performed all the music. “They’re almost all chants and music that I learned from the refugees,” Gaston said. “Essentially, the essence of all of

A full-scale fall tour will hit theaters and universities across the country. Schultz said bringing her play to Minnesota was on the top of her list, and hopes people can come experience what she has dedicated the last two years of her life to. “I really hope Burnsville [residents] can come out and hopefully they can learn something about what’s going on in the world,” said Schultz, a 1988 graduate of Burnsville High School. While the play is heavy on emotions of pain, fear, loneliness, and death, Schultz has found a way to weave humor throughout. “My goal is to find comedy where I can,” Schultz said. “The show has funny, light elements as well. I think people will be surprised by that.” Mooney echoed Schultz’ sentiment. “I think people will be surprised by how much time they spend laughing,” Mooney said. Ultimately, Schultz wants the play to inspire others. “I hope that people come to the show and will come with open hearts,” she said. “I think that they might be surprised with what they might leave with.” All performances cost $15. The play runs 8 p.m. Thursday, July 14 through Saturday, July 16 and 7 p.m. for the Sunday, July 17 performance. The Saturday, July 16 performance will be ASL interpreted. Burnsville group home serious about getting in shape BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Combining a healthier diet with daily exercise has worked wonders for the residents and staff of the Kennelly House, a community-based residential facility for people with disabilities. The home’s eight residents have lost more than 100 pounds since October 2009, said Jason Fladager, program director for the home, with one losing 26 pounds alone. The home, run by the Eagan-based Dakota Communities, implemented a “Ways to Wellness” program as part of initiative to raise the quality of life of their residents. “Ways to Wellness” is a 12-week health-coaching program that focuses on making and reaching fitness goals and takes place at the Woodwinds Health Campus in Woodbury. “We didn’t want to make it an event,” said Dakota Communities Director of Community Life Toni O’Brien. “We decided to make a complete culture change for those people we support and our employees.”

Kennelly is one of 19 residences currently using the program out of Dakota Communities 32 homes, O’Brien said. O’Brien said the Kennelly House has had the best results because of the positive attitudes of the residents and staff. The home’s success can be attributed to the longevity of the program, and she anticipates the rest of the group homes to at least meet its success. By the end of June, all of the Dakota Communities homes will have implemented a new menu system, O’Brien said. Dakota Communities partnered with students at St. Catherine’s University in St. Paul to overhaul their menus to healthier alternatives. The homes now use a four-season menu. The old menu consisted of foods high in sodium, cholesterol, and fat and low in vitamins, fiber, and whole grains, Fladager said. Instead of eating corn dogs, tuna helper and apple pie, residents now have rosemary pork, Thai pork with vegetable curry, and quinoa salad as dinner menu options.

For breakfast, one menu option is two whole-wheat buttermilk pancakes with roasted vanilla-scented apples. An old menu option consisted of spam and French toast with margarine and syrup. O’Brien said the new menu options acted as a catalyst for a happier and healthier home. Residents took it upon themselves to add exercise to their daily lives, participating in yoga, basketball, hockey, and walking outside in area parks. “Once people started losing weight, they started to feel better for themselves,” O’Brien said. “The first thing implemented was the menu system and everything else has fallen into place after that.” Ground turkey tacos and a fruit salad were served for dinner with fat free skim milk to drink during a meal June 1. Resident Scott Burpee browned the meat, and another sets the table. O’Brien said that the medical community on the whole has taken the

wrong approach to helping people with disabilities improve their lives. Instead of trying to “fix” them, Dakota Communities focuses on improving the quality of their lives by implementing and encouraging daily healthiness, O’Brien said. “Wellness should be important for everybody regardless of their ability,” O’Brien said. Burpee, who has lost 22 pounds on the program, can currently do 20 consecutive push-ups and 20 sit-ups. If Burpee can do 30 repetitions of each at his next trip to Woodwinds, home staff member Aaron Oden will take him out for a big, juicy burger as a reward. “I’ve seen him do 25 of each,” Oden said. “Scottie can do it.” Staff member Matt Hansen said he enjoys working at the home because the staff and residents get along so well and are always joking with each other. When asked what his favorite exercise was, Burpee replied, “Rest.” “That’s classic Scottie!” said Oden

BY NICK CLARK • SUN NEWSPAPERS The numbers, as they are every year with the Schwan’s USA Cup, are staggering. The annual extravaganza will once again be the largest youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere. It begins Friday, July 15, at the National Sports Center in Blaine. This year, 942 teams have registered – 25 more than a year ago – in a field that includes teams from 17 countries, 20 states and 59 Minnesota communities. Organizers already avoided what could have been a crippling hurdle. The NSC is a state facility but is operated by a non-profit foundation, meaning it is able to stay open during the government shutdown. Good thing, too. The economic impact is expected to be more than $20 million during the 2011 tournament. “It brings in money to the state,” said USA Cup media director Barclay Kruse. “There is no arguing that.” This will be 27th year of the event. As always, the soccer is the highlight. The highest level will be in two Puma vElite tournaments. Eight elite boys teams from across the country will compete for a trip to Portugal to train with Sporting Lisbon FC, while seven elite girls clubs play for an expenses-paid trip to the Women’s Professional Soccer championship game. This year is the first for the girls vElite tournament. With what’s at stake, teams in both tournaments are expected to play for keeps. “It won’t be a beauty contest,” Kruse USA CAP: TO NEXT PAGE

The next couple of months could go a long way toward determining Ryan Peterson’s future in golf. The two-time state high school champion from Eagan already has won one of Minnesota’s most prestigious amateur tournaments this summer. Now the question is, could he compete at the professional level? “I think I’m going to take a shot at it,” Peterson said last week. “I’ve been thinking about the Gateway Tour in Arizona. Or I might come back here and try some Dakotas Tour events.” Peterson recently completed his golf eligibility at Colorado State University but will go back in the fall to complete his final semester. He will stay in amateur golf for a while longer. Starting Monday, July 18, he plays in the Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship at White Bear Yacht Club. He finished third in that tournament a year ago. Peterson won the Mountain West Conference individual championship in his junior year and tied for first as a senior. But his college career had a rocky start. “When I got there, I definitely wasn’t as good as I thought I was,” said Peterson, who is pursuing a marketing degree. “My first two years there, I played hardly at all. rarely was the longest hitter in any tournament, but he made up for it with consistency and a solid short game. He claims he isn’t that much longer now – “maybe 10-15 yards,” he said – but MGA tournament director Doug Hoffmann recalled Peterson hitting several tee shots that carried 280 yards during a recent round at White Bear Yacht Club. Last month at the MGA Players’ Championship – the state men’s amateur match-play tournament – Peterson was 8 under par over six rounds en route to victory. None of his matches lasted more than 16 holes. “I wouldn’t say I played lights-out, but I thought I played patient and smart,” he said. “I didn’t make a lot of mistakes. I had five or six bogeys for the week.I tried to wait for the other guys to make mistakes.” Peterson also will play in the Minnesota State Open the weekend of July 22-24 at Rush Creek in Maple Grove. He also will go to the Northwest Amateur in Spencer, Iowa, (where he is defending champion) as well the Canadian Amateur. He also will attempt to qualify for the U.S. Amateur in late August at Erin Hills near Milwaukee, Wis.

To spice up the tournament welcome, the USA Cup will have a huge viewing screen at midfield of the main stadium. A production company will oversee the ceremony, which will also include musical entertainment and a post-ceremony concert featuring the Theater Mu Daiko Drum Team. The ceremony is free and open to the public. “You don’t have to be participating in the USA Cup to get into the opening ceremony,” Kruse said. “Anybody can come.” That includes those from Uganda, or the U.S. Virgin Islands. Both have teams in the USA Cup for the first time, pushing the total number of countries to participate

One will feature the St. Paul Saints mascot Mudonna, who will run in the Twin

Cities Marathon this fall in an attempt to break the all-time mascot marathon record. Mudonna will run in the USA Cup’s Puma Dash 5K Sunday, July 17, collecting donations that will go to relief for victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami. Most of the money will go toward rebuilding Togiwagi Gakuen High School in Sendai, Japan. “The team from the school won the girls U19 division last year, and the school was badly damaged during the earthquake,” Kruse said. “They come every three years to the tournament, and they always send awesome teams, so they are real loyal participants in USA Cup every third year. This is a way for us to try and thank them for their loyalty to us.” The second fundraiser will be colored in pink. The entire NSC campus will be pink Wednesday, July 20, as part of Project Pink, a one-day breast cancer initiative that will have visitors seeing little else besides pink. “The operations staff is going to change our fencing and signage and it will all be pink when everyone arrives that morning,” Kruse said. “Referees will wear pink socks, all the games will be played with pink balls and the staff will wear pink shirts.”
