Connecting science and sound Garlough Environmental Magnet School students find commonality between the two subjects BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Students at the Garlough Environmental Magnet School in W. St. Paul have the opportunity many past students wished they had had – to play and create music outdoors. Since 2009, Garlough students have had the experience. After receiving a $5,000 District 197 Innovation Grant in 2009, the school bought and installed many large outdoors instruments behind the school. Bongo drums, xylophones and chimes twice the height of many students now are used on a daily basis. Innovation Grants are awarded to schools that demonstrate it will make connections between the science and art of sound, said Jennifer Parker, Garlough’s Magnet facilitator. That’s the idea behind the musical playground – to give students a hands-on experience on the creation of sound and music. The outdoor setting is the perfect place Weekly to experiment, Parker said. Super Savings! “This is a wonderful way for them to learn the concepts without it being too overwhelming,” she said. “When you’re doing sound experiments in a closed space, it can be very overwhelming.” Garlough has the only musical playground in the state, a point of pride for Parker, who is new to the Week ly Sup er S avings! school this year. “It’s just another way that our school is so unique,” Parker said. “I’ve never seen a school with so many motivated kids. COMMUNITY BRIEFS MVTA wins national marketing and communications award The American Public Transportation Association has announced that Minnesota Valley Transit Authority has won a top prize in the 2011 Annual AdWheel Award competition for its “Interior Bus Cards” in the “Poster” category. The AdWheel Awards honor outstanding excellence in public transportation advertising, marketing and communications. MVTA developed a series of interior cards for use on buses to reinforce and remind riders of important messages, such as remembering to check for all items brought on the bus, and providing information about the Guaranteed Ride Home program, the upcoming Bus Rapid Transit on Cedar Avenue, safety issues, bus fares and more. Dakota County passes zero increase for 2012 tax levy Taxpayers will still see 3-4 percent increase in county taxes due to homestead credit elimination BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS On Sept. 13, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution setting a property tax levy with no increase from last year for 2012. The levy – the total amount of taxes the county needs to collect to balance its budget – will remain at $129.4 million. However, owners of a median-valued home will see a 3- to 4-percent increase in the county portion of their taxes due to a change the state legislature made in homeowner taxes for 2012. In previous years, the Market Value Homestead Credit provided property tax relief to homestead property owners. Under the Market Value Homestead Credit, taxpay- Egan

ers received a credit against the market value of their property and Dakota County was reimbursed by the state the amount the homeowner saved, said Dakota County Financial Services Director Matt Smith. This past session, the state legislature replaced the Market Value Homestead Credit with the Market Value Homestead Exclusion. Under this new system, homestead property owners will still receive a similar benefit, but the state no longer pays for it. Under the new exclusion system, homestead property owners receive an exclusion of a portion of their estimated market value in calculating what the actual taxable market value will be, said Dakota County Commissioner Thomas Egan. The amount Dakota County and other similar jurisdictions can calculate its tax on is the taxable market value after the exclusion, Smith said. Dakota County receives no reimbursement from the state for the amount taken out of the taxable market value like it did under the homestead credit system. “This makes the state look like a hero in the eyes of the property tax payer, but makes it even more difficult for Dakota County to raise the necessary revenue to conduct its business,” Egan said.

Dakota County Commissioner Liz Workman said she would like to see the state take credit for the tax shift. “Bottom line, [the state] cut state aid to property tax payers, but when property tax payers look Workman at their statements, it comes up on the county’s line,” said Dakota County Commissioner Liz Workman. “I can’t stress enough, none of the 87 counties in the state of Minnesota are responsible for this,” Workman said. “Counties did not increase your property taxes. The state did.” The county board passed the zero percent increase for the tax levy because it knew a tax increase was coming in 2012 for its taxpayers. “They are very aware of the added tax burden to the taxpayers next year,” Smith said regarding the county board. “They wanted to be very careful not to add anything at the county level to add to that burden.” Smith added that the new tax laws will likely hit other property taxpayers – such as business owners – even harder. They

now have to pay a larger share of the dollar amount levied because the state no longer subsidizes the homestead credit tax break. “Business properties could see a 6 percent increase,” Smith said. Dakota County is required to set the proposed property tax levy by Sept. 15 each year. The board is scheduled to adopt the final budget by Dec. 13 along with the final levy. “The Dakota County Board of Commissioners has reduced its budget by nearly 10 percent over the last two years through many means including the reduction of our work force by over 100 positions,” Egan said. “This has allowed us to remain the lowest taxed county in the entire State of Minnesota.” The Dakota County Administrator will present a recommended budget to the County Board on Nov. 1. County budget workshops are scheduled Nov. 1-4 with the Truth in Taxation hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. on Nov. 29 at the Dakota County Board Room, Administration Center, 1590 Highway 55 in Hastings. The adoption of the final 2012 budget and property tax levy is scheduled for Dec. 13.

Someone should benefit from my time in college The last week in September is Homecoming Week up at my alma mater, the University of Minnesota, Morris, and I’ve been invited to attend a number of alumni events as a representative of the newspaper industry and to enlighten students on the pros and cons of working in journalism. I think. To be frank, I’m not quite sure why they picked me — I highly doubt the criteria for selection included “dashing, handsome and has access to frequent columns in a newspaper.” For whatever reason, the alumni office asked me to take a drive up to Morris for a few days to join in the festivities, and I plan to be there. (Or, I am there. The conjugation of that verb and formation of the sentence around it entirely rests on when you, dear reader, are actually reading this column.) My time in college gave me many things: A healthy appreciation for seemingly endless insomnia, for example. Also, a solid understanding of how to buy exactly enough food to prevent

starvation, but still have money for rent, electricity, perpetually popping bicycle tires and the numerous copies I was somehow always making in this increasingly paper-free world. So, in the spirit of education and giving advice that somehow, at some point, might be useful to those who tread the path I too recently walked myself, I dug down deep and came up with some thoughts for those just starting off on whatever journey it is they are on. Then I sat down and wrote that column, touching on the finer points of how to succeed in college. It was a fine piece of writing, if I do say so myself, and I was initially pleased with it. Then I tore up the page and deleted the file. You see, the reason I made it

from orientation to graduation has less to do with anything I learned while I was there, and far more to do with a simple mantra that was given to me shortly before I left for school. This most important piece is one I cannot claim as my own, because it was given to me by someone close to me. I won’t divulge his name here for risk of, well, nothing in particular. I’m just not sure he’s interested in seeing his name in print — again. For those communications and journalism students reading this, yes, I am using an anonymous source and, no, I haven’t fact-checked his information. Deviations aside, he said, quite plainly, “Don’t forget why you’re here.” Why you’re here: That’s the kicker. It’s advice that can apply to anyone regardless of whether they’re in school or not. There are so many distractions that can crop up; interpersonal drama, bills, clubs, parties and everything else can get in the way.

Remembering why you’re spending the time, money and effort to fill every day to do what you do every day should be paramount. Don’t let the minutia occupy your mind, learn to avoid the pitfalls and aim yourself toward what it is you want. Gather the knowledge. Staying on the path you’ve chosen isn’t always easy, but one day you, too, may be able to offer somewhat trite platitudes to those who come after you. Just to add a little disclaimer — something I find myself doing on a regular basis in my columns — a four-year degree isn’t for everyone. I have many friends who have happy, healthy, successful lives and careers without going to or graduating from college. The right path for some is the wrong road for others. Phantom election candidates waste everyone’s time Each year when election season rolls around, a deep sigh echoes through our newsroom. To be honest, many deep sighs. It can be a frustrating experience. For the most part, the candidates are good to deal with. They respond to our requests for information, make themselves available for interviews and generally take their election bid serious. But there are always a handful who don’t. I call them the phantom candidates. Yes, they file to run, but that’s the last you hear from them. In doing our due diligence, we take above-and-beyond steps to try to track these people down to make sure they are included in our election coverage. We start out with an email generally, then a phone call and then a letter posted to their home address. From there we go to ask-

On occasion we’ve gone back and sent registered letters (which came back undeliverable) and in one case I remember a couple years back, I sent a community editor to the doorstep of a so-called candidate. He wasn’t home. He also wasn’t home two days later when the community editor paid a return visit. Over the years I’ve grown a bit less diligent about tracking down these folks. Who would file to run for office and then not participate in

the campaign? What is the purpose, other than to cost the governing entity money? I suppose it’s a way of “making a statement,” but what would that statement be. “I’m so hard up for attention I file to run for office and then don’t participate in the election.” That is the statement being made, as far as I’m concerned. Already in this year’s election we’ve come across several phantom candidates. Generally the first tip-off is when they have no online presence. All serious candidates today down to the most microscopic of entities have a website, even if it’s nothing more than a glorified campaign pamphlet. The clincher is when they don’t answer their telephone for days on end. When certified mail is returned, you know you’ve reached the end.

I suppose everyone has the right to choose how they will campaign – or in this case refuse to campaign. Maybe it’s time we put some sort of penalty into the election laws. If you want to be a phantom candidate and there is sufficient evidence to convict you, the individual in question should be sentenced to scrub floors in the office of the Secretary of State the day after election night. The threat of manual labor ought to throw some scare into them.Of course, law enforcement would have the same problem finding them that we have, but they have the power of subpoena. A bench warrant really gets your attention. It did mine. Ask me to tell you about that sometime. Meanwhile, don’t vote for phantom candidates. It only makes matters worse.

Dakota County parks will soon host deer hunters Application deadline Oct. 10 to hunt in select parks in the county BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Taking to the woods and fields is an annual rite of autumn in Minnesota for thousands of deer hunters. In Dakota County, deer hunting season is just around the corner. The application deadline to register for the controlled archery and shotgun hunts in select Dakota County parks is Oct. 10. Controlled deer hunts in Dakota County parks began in 1995, when the deer population was nearly beyond manageable levels, said Johnny Forrest with the Dakota County Parks Department. “In the 90s, our parks had 40 to 60 [deer] per square mile,” Forrest said. “That was quite a heavy browsing load on park vegetation.” When deer numbers reached its peak in Dakota County parks, the vegetation suffered, particularly young sapling oak trees – a favorite of deer. Now, largely because of the continued controlled hunts, there is a paucity of deer in Dakota County parks. “Deer numbers have come down significantly since the 1990s and now deer are at much more manageable, lower levels,” Forrest said. Now, deer numbers are down in the teens per square mile, Forrest said. Fewer deer mean that fewer hunters

are needed to help manage the herds, Forrest said. But, while the deer population is lower, the hunts are still important because they keep the overall deer population in check. Deer can reproduce and grow their numbers quickly without constant management, said Forrest. “Our continuing hunts are scaled back to some extent and also intended to keep deer numbers in check because without deer management, it’s possible for deer populations to increase very rapidly,” Forrest said. “Deer populations can double in a year with favorable conditions.” The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is largely uninvolved with the controlled deer hunts in Dakota County parks. As long as the hunters abide by the state’s hunting regulations, the DNR lets the county organize the hunts. “I’m all for it,” said Bob Fashingbauer, Department of Natural Resources wildlife area manager. “If they don’t allow hunting, then the numbers build up and there’s an impact on the ecosystem. They have to do something and we’re behind them 100 percent.” A benefit of the lower deer population is the re-growth of many plants the deer would generally have eaten. With fewer deer, the habitat is at a much healthier level. “It fosters conditions for natural reforestation, particular oak trees, which are one of the deer’s favorite browsing food,” Forrest said. “Also, it

helps to regenerate prairie flowers. There are certain species of prairie flowers that are likely candy to deer. Without the management, they won’t survive long.” Woodland grasses and other flowers have also made a healthy comeback, Forrest said. With healthier levels of plants, the park’s natural inhabitants are thriving in 2011. “Unlike the 1990s, the vegetation is a lot healthier,” Forrest said. “By having more healthy and diverse woodland plants and shrubs, that improves the wildlife habitat for many other kinds of wildlife and birds in the park.” Farmers have also benefited from the controlled deer hunts. In the 90s, Forrest said he received calls from private landowners around Dakota County parks that deer had been eating significant amounts of their crops. No one has called to complain about deer depleting their crop supply for years, Forrest said. Also, fewer car and deer collisions have occurred since the controlled deer hunts began, Forrest said. Those applicants are then put into a lottery drawing, with 40 hunters allowed to hunt each park a day. The exception is Lebanon Regional Hills Park in Eagan, which can have twice as many hunters as the other parks. “The park can accommodate up to 80 archers on any given morning without participants complaining about [it] being overcrowded,” Forrest said. “The reason for this is the rugged topography of the park. They don’t see each other because they are separated by hills and ridges.” Archery hunts are scheduled at

Lebanon Hills Regional Park and the western section of Spring Lake Park Reserve. Lebanon Hills Regional Park will be closed until noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays Oct. 31 through Nov. 16. The western portion of Spring Lake Park Reserve will be closed all day Nov. 5-7, 11-13 and 19-21. A shotgun hunt will be held at Miesville Ravine Park Reserve Nov. 1927 and the park will be closed during the hunts. Forrest said the county has posted large notices at bulletin boards and kiosks that the parks will be closed during the controlled hunts. A homespun hobby helps Bloomington woman keep kids warm BY JONATHAN YOUNG – SUN NEWSPAPERS On the coldest days this winter, Bloomington resident Patricia Halloway will have warm thoughts because 88 children she’s never met will have hats. Halloway recently donated 88 handknit hats to the Coats for Kids campaign sponsored by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. Making hats to donate wasn’t Halloway’s idea. Halloway, who is retired, learned to knit in her 20s, and she finds it relaxing. She wanted to find a way to use her hobby to help others. “I just like to knit, and I just was looking for a way to knit something for somebody,” she said. Then an aunt who lives in Indiana told Halloway she knits hats for local charities. “I thought, ‘I could do that — I have all this yarn and all this time,’” Halloway said. So Halloway began knitting hats. Then she had to find somewhere to donate the hats. When she heard about the Coats for Kids campaign, she fig-

ured if children needed coats, they probably needed hats too. “I didn’t have coats, but I asked if they would want hats,” she said. That was about three years ago, and she has been making hats for the Coats for Kids campaign ever since. She has also begun donating knitted items to other charities. She said she makes about five or six hats a week in a variety of colors and sizes. Halloway hopes others will get involved however they can. “I’m sure that the 80-some hats I make come far short of the actual need,” she said. Halloway doesn’t think her contribution is worthy of notice, and she doesn’t brag about it. But she does find it rewarding to know children are benefiting from her work. “When it’s really, really cold, I like to think some kids are wearing them to keep warm,” she said. Others who wish to donate to the Coats for Kids campaign can drop donations off at any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations throughout the metro through Saturday, Oct. 8. The campaign accepts donations of all sizes for all ages, including adults.

Lone Oak Days 2011 Those who attended the annual Lone Oak Days fall fun event Sept. 24 and 25 at the Holz Farm – a working farm in Eagan as late as the early 1990s – got a hands-on experience to what farm life was like in the 1940s. A rain stick – a tribal instrument used to mimic the sound of rainfall – is attached to the back of the wall. “The work that went into making sure everything was the right tone was amazing,” said Maria Pasquerella, Title 1 Teacher at Garlough. “The musical wall was a way that everyday objects can be used to make sound and this is a great example for [the students].” Kathleen Lundgren, former Garlough Magent facilitator, wrote the grants for the musical playground, said Garlough Principal Susan Powell. “It was her vision,” Powell said of Lundgren. “Kathleen is very connected to the music community.” Aside from getting joy out of creating music, other classes use the musical playground for different purposes. Ideally, students get satisfaction from creating music and learning about the science behind their creation. “The third grade teachers use it to explore concepts such as pitch and vibrations to explore the physics of sounds in a fun way,” Parker said. “It’s a vehicle to build on scientific vocabulary, but it also connects the arts,” added Powell.

The playground is at the fingertips of all Garlough students, but they’re not the only ones using it. “Any students in any school district … it’s open for their use at anytime,” said Powell. “There are always kids at the musical instruments.” More instruments are coming Garlough’s way. A musical manta ray has been ordered and will arrive in about a month, Parker said. The Manta ray is an aluminum metallophone, an instrument with tuned metal bars. Additionally, the school is encouraging students to help design and build future outdoor musical instruments, provided enough funding is received. “The long-term vision is for us to have more student-produced instruments that have been enlarged with professional installation,” Powell said. This goal is a cornerstone of Garlough’s vision – to give students the opportunities to create and experiments for themselves. “We definitely want more student created pieces added and there’s definitely plenty of space,” Parker said. When students use the playground outside of class, they’re still getting something out of their experience. “They’re learning without even realizing that’s what they’re doing,” said Parker. Jennifer Simi Jennifer Corrin Simi, age 27 of Apple Valley, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 Jennifer was born on January 30, 1984 in Minneapolis, the daughter of Craig and Corrine (Schmitt-Kearns) Simi. She graduated from Eastview High School in 2002 and the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2005 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology. Jennifer will be remembered as a kind, caring, giving and thoughtful person. She is survived by her mom, Corrine (Jay) Kearns; dad, Craig (Sharon) Simi; brother Joshua Simi; step-brothers, Travis and Quinlan Kearns; step-sisters, Aleena Kearns, Molly (Andrew) West and Sophie Sjostrom; grandparents, Julie Schmitt and Delores and Dennis Simi; and many other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her grandfather, George T. Schmitt. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 26 from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation one hour prior to service at church. Opportunistic defense keeps Lakeville North unbeaten Rosemount suffers 1st home-field football loss in almost 4 years BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS The players on Lakeville North’s defense don’t need to be reminded they’re not big. What’s more important to them is whether they play big. On Sept. 23, the Panthers recovered four Rosemount fumbles, made a gamechanging defensive stand inside their own 10-yard line and kept the Irish out of the end zone until the fourth quarter. Big enough? For the Panthers, it was. Lakeville North, ranked eighth in Class

5A, defeated seventh-ranked Rosemount 28-7 to improve to 4-0. North also is 4-0 in the South Suburban Conference and leads the league by a half-game over Lakeville South. The Lakeville teams are scheduled to play each other Oct. 7 at Lakeville North. To compensate for a lack of size, the North defensive players “just have to do it with a lot of energy, be physical and pursue the football,” said 190-pound junior linebacker Mitch Johnson, who had the Panthers’ first two fumble recoveries. Three major invitational meets took place on Sept. 24. In addition to the Eagle Invitational in Apple Valley, runners flocked to the Milaca Mega Meet and Roy Griak Invitational. The Griak meet attracted a strong field to the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, the same course that will be used for the Section 3AA championships Oct. 26. Burnsville senior Cole O’Brien was eighth of 472 runners in the boys Gold

South Suburban Conference runners put on a show for cross country fans at the Eagle Invitational at Apple Valley High School. Lakeville South won the girls championship at the Sept. 23 meet, dethroning Eden Prairie, and had two runners among the top five individuals. In the boys race, Eagan junior Sidney Speir took the championship and Eastview’s Ken Hoffman and Nick Oelke were third and fourth. Eden Prairie won the boys team championship, with Eastview, Lakeville South and Apple Valley finishing second through fourth. Speir won the boys 5K race in 16 minutes, 13 seconds. Waseca ninth-grader Shane Streich was second in 16:15. Eastview’s Hoffman and Oelke both were timed in 16:28. Speir’s time is an Eagan record on the Apple Valley High School course. Eagan coach Rob Graham estimated that the Apple Valley course was about 30 seconds more difficult than the course used for the Apple Jack Invitational in Lakeville, where Speir ran a school-record 15:53.4 on Sept. 16. The Eastview boys scored 67 points, 26 behind Eden Prairie. After Hoffman’s and Oelke’s top-five finishes, David Salter, Dan Spike and John Donlan finished 19th through 21st. Apple Valley (132 points) was led by senior Alex Brandel and junior Nick Hughes, who finished 13th and 22nd. Burnsville finished eighth at Apple Valley without its top two runners, Cole O’Brien and Abdul Salan, who ran at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota. Ninth-grader Faysol Mamoud finished 11th in 16:56 to lead the Blaze contingent at the Eagle Invitational. Instead, they settled for falling on the ball and celebrating their good fortune. “We’ll take them any way we can get them,” Lakeville North coach Brian Vossen said. “One thing we emphasize here is that every ball is live. Incomplete pass, fumble, it doesn’t matter. Our kids are supposed to go get the ball.” Rosemount’s veer option is “an offense we don’t see from any other team,” Johnson said. “When we play them, we know we have to watch a lot of film that week.” In past years, Rosemount quarterbacks have created a lot of problems for Lakeville North defenses, Vossen said. “We wanted to figure out when they would throw it,” Vossen said. “And when [Rosemount quarterback Nate Lemoine] decided to keep it, we didn’t want to give up a 70-yard run. We wanted to make them try to beat us using the dive [the first option in Rosemount’s attack]. “All but two times, our guys committed to what they were supposed to do.” Lakeville North’s first touchdown was set up by, yes, a Rosemount fumble. The Irish lost the ball on their first offensive play, with Johnson recovering at the Rosemount 20. Four plays later, Brandon Morgan scored on a 3-yard run to put North ahead. North quarterback Trey Heid threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ben Blake with 2:44 remaining in the first half. A 40-yard pass from Heid to Charlie Hayes two plays earlier set up the score. Rosemount made a big to change the momentum in the third quarter, moving the ball from its 21 to the Lakeville North 4. The Panthers’ Karl Finkel then tackled Lemoine for a 3-yard loss on third down. On fourth down, Lemoine was tackled after a 3-yard gain, but his team needed 4 yards. North then drove 96 yards in six plays, highlighted by Heid’s 51-yard touchdown run on a quarterback draw. “I really like that play,” Heid said, “and it was set up perfectly.” Later in the third quarter, North took possession at the Rosemount 27 after a 12yard punt. Four plays later, Heid threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Joel Oxton. Rosemount (3-1) gained 292 yards but lost the ball three times inside the Lakeville North 30 – twice on downs, once on a fumble. The Irish avoided a shutout on Lemoine’s 18-yard pass to Sean Kalinowski with 6:07 remaining. The loss was the Irish’s first at home since Oct. 27, 2007. Rosemount goes on the road to play undefeated and fourthranked Lakeville South at 7 p.m. Friday,

Their undefeated record notwithstanding, the Panthers still believe they have something to prove. “Some people didn’t think we’d be that good,” Johnson said. “But we knew we had a strong group this year.”

Five different Eagan players scored touchdowns and the defense held Apple Valley to 91 yards. Michael Busch rushed for 82 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Wildcats, who led 34-0 at halftime. Quarterback Drew Bauer passed for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 72 yards and one score. Mack Nelson and Aaron Roundtree caught touchdown passes from Bauer. Defensive back Grant Matthews intercepted two passes, one of which he returned 13 yards for a score. Kennedy 31, Eastview 24 Eastview won’t soon forget about Lexis Jones. The Bloomington Kennedy running back gained 262 yards and scored twice in the Eagles’ upset victory at Eastview on Sept. 23. Kennedy led 17-10 at halftime, and Jones then took over in the third quarter, scoring on runs of 57 and 42 yards. Eastview rallied in the fourth quarter on touchdown passes from Ryan Reger to Aaron Wesser (78 yards) and Austin Hebig (42 yards). Reger also scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter. Sam Fluegge kicked a 25yard field goal in the first quarter. Eastview (1-3) plays host to Apple Valley (0-3) in the intracity rivalry game at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.

Prior Lake 13, Burnsville 10 Prior Lake retained the Dan Patch Trophy by edging Burnsville in the Blaze’s homecoming game Sept. 23. Burnsville (1-3) never led in the game, but pulled within three points with less than four minutes to play on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Dan Motl to Will Reger. Motl also kicked a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter. Strange finish, but a ‘W’ for Wildcats on Sept. 22 Eagan boys soccer team improves to 8-2-2 after beating Burnsville BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Kurt Virgin has been on the sideline for more than 400 boys soccer victories, so he’s seen his share of strange finishes. But a Sept. 22 game at Burnsville might have been an all-timer for the veteran Eagan coach. With the South Suburban Conference teams seemingly headed for a scoreless draw, Eagan was awarded a free kick almost 50 yards from the Burnsville goal in the final minute of overtime. As the kick sailed toward the Blaze goal, an Eagan player and the Burnsville goalkeeper jumped for the ball and collided in midair. The ball cleared the tangle of players and found the net, giving Eagan senior Max Turnstedt his fourth goal of the season with 33.5 seconds remaining. “A 50-yarder? That doesn’t happen too often,” Virgin said. “That was a heck of a shot. We’ll take it. “This is a big win for us. I thought it would be a good game, and it was. Burnsville is a good team, and our kids played well.” The result didn’t sit well with the Burnsville coaches, who contended that Eagan should have been whistled for a foul on the deciding play. Eagan, however, probably was relieved to finish a strange week 1-0-1. Eagan (8-2-2 overall, 3-2-1 SSC) tied Bloomington Jefferson 3-3 on Sept. 20, coming from behind to earn the draw after Jefferson scored two goals on penal-

ty kicks. Eagan had the majority of the possession time in regulation time against Burnsville but had nothing to show for it. The Wildcats did hit a goalpost in the first half. Early in overtime, the Blaze’s Jan Splittgerber blasted a shot off the crossbar. Burnsville (5-3-4, 3-2-1) was coming off a 1-1 tie with Eastview, the new No. 1ranked team in Class AA. Eastview had started its season with 10 consecutive victories before tying Burnsville. With a veteran roster (15 seniors), Eagan figures to be one of the contenders in the Section 3AA playoffs that begin in less than two weeks. Senior A.J. Albers is the chief scoring threat with 11 goals, but Turnstedt, Juan Sjoberg and Wyatt Wagner each have at least four goals. Turnstedt also has a team-leading eight assists. Senior defender Tyler Burger and senior goalkeeper Austin Stoesz, both captains, are key parts of the Eagan defense. “It’s a good group of players, and we do have some depth,” Virgin said. The last two years, Eagan was Section 3AA runner-up to Apple Valley teams that finished undefeated and won the state championship. The Wildcats should be in the mix again this year as they are one of five teams in Section 3AA – Eastview, Apple Valley, Burnsville and Henry Sibley are the others – with winning records. Eagan played Henry Sibley on Sept. 26 and Lakeville North on Sept. 27 in games that took place after this edition went to press. The Wildcats return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, in a South Suburban Conference game against Apple Valley at Johnny Cake Ridge Park.

homes and businesses. Andrew’s perfectionist approach to every job and the extent of his skill set have made him one of the best craftsman in the Twin Cities. My other two sons run the painting end of the business and are also professionally trained Artists. Jeremiah attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and later studied under the mentorship of the nationally renowned portrait and fresco painter Mark Balma. David similarly was accepted into a full time master apprenticeship program at the young age of 16 at the highly respected Atelier Lack Studio. They followed in the family tradition of mastering a professional craft and skill which they have brought to our company. Between the two they offer 25 years of experience painting interior and exterior homes in the metro area with our family business.
