Foreign exchange student feels right at home Nina Rajkovic of Montenegro to be a senior at Rosemount High School for 2011-12 school year BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Many students this fall will be attending school for the first time, or climbing the academic ladder to a school of higher learning. Such changes can create apprehension and excitement for students at all levels. But imagine starting school having only been in the country for three weeks. That is what Nina Rajkovic will experience Sept. 6 as a senior at Rosemount High School. Nina, whose hometown is Budva, Montenegro, is a foreign exchange student with the International Experience program. She will live with Trent Halvorson, Trent’s girlfriend Jovana Stojakovic and his daughter, Hannah, for the 2011-2012 school year in Apple Valley. Though she only arrived Aug. 18, Nina says she already feels like she fits right in. “They are really good to me and really made me feel part of the family,” Nina said. “They’ve been really nice and made me feel so welcome.” Halvorson said Nina and Hannah, 6, bonded instantly. “When I pick [Hannah] up, she asks if Nina is home and then she runs down the stairs [to Nina’s bedroom],” Halvorson said. “She’s really cute and smart,” Nina said of STUDENT: TO PAGE 21

in Rosemount to hold special 9/11 service BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Among the thousands of Sept. 11, 2011, remembrance ceremonies across the country, the Lighthouse Christian Church, 3285 144th St. W., in Rosemount is planning a special service 10-11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11. The special service – “We Remember” – will be held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and to remember those people who lost their gave their lives, said Lighthouse Christian Church Pastor Bill Goodwin. “In some ways, it’s hard to believe 10 years have already passed,” Goodwin said. “It’s really special for us as people of faith as this event is on a Sunday. We believe it’s time that we look to our faith once again and remember how God has carried through in this country and how he’s carried people through the hard times.” All Lighthouse Christian Church members, as well as non-members living in the community, are welcome and invited to the service, Goodwin said. The service will feature a mixture of church music and patriotic music with
the church band performing “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless the USA.” During the musical performance, military members past and present will be honored. “We’re going to invite all our military to stand by their branch of the military’s flag,” Goodwin said. “It’s going to be a really moving time.” Goodwin said that first responders in the congregation will also be asked to stand and be recognized. If appropriate, first responders and military service members are invited to wear their uniforms to the service. Ultimately, the service will serve as a reminder that countless men and women have sacrificed so much our country in the past ten years, Goodwin said. “I want them to take away that God has been faithful to our country in the midst of the tragedy and we appreciate our first responders and our military and we can never express our gratitude enough for how they served our country,” Goodwin said. “That’s really the heart behind it.” Info: worldwidelighthouse.com. At City Hall, an Eagan police squad car and fire vehicle will be parked beneath a banner adjacent to Pilot Knob Road, which reads, “Eagan Remembers.” At 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, representatives of Eagan Police, Fire, and American military will present a memorial wreath at the Tribute and Memorial plaza at Eagan’s Central Park. There will be no speeches or formal presentation, but taps will be played in honor of the innocent who lost their lives, the valiant first responders who died, and the brave Americans who fought the hijackers rather than allow a plane to hit the nation’s capitol. Girl Scout Troop 53557 remodels gardens at Thomas Lake Elem. Girl Scout Troop 53557 of Eagan has completed its service project at Thomas Lake Elementary School in Eagan. The girls rebuilt the Peace Garden and worked to clean up and improve other gardens at the school as well. The troop built this garden to complete its Bronze Award, one of the highest honors a girl scout can receive. In order to earn this award, each girl must work at least 20 hours on a service project, in addition to completing many other requirements. The troop worked with the school to create a garden that would replace an older one that had died and increase its size. The troop spent two months working on different parts of the project to design and build the new garden and clean up the existing gardens at the school. This includes weeding, watering, preparing the garden for planting, meetings, mulching and other extra work for the project. Apple Valley man wins custom Fender Stratocaster guitar Apple Valley resident Scott Johnson recently won the Raising Cane’s restaurant’s “Cane’s Rocks” giveaway. Johnson won the Apple Valley restaurant’s custom-designed Fender Stratocaster guitar valued at $500. “At Raising Cane’s, we love to celebrate with our customers.” said General Manager Brian Bleske in a release. “Mr. Johnson is a true ‘Caniac’ and a music lover, so we couldn’t be happier that he won.” Johnson, a native of Australia, began playing the guitar when he was 5-years-old. He had to sell his guitar in 2005 when he moved to the United States. Bleske and Raising Cane’s crewmembers presented Johnson with his new guitar on Aug. 25 at the restaurant. Info: raisingcanes.com.

New bike racks provide nearly 100 new parking stalls in Rosemount space to accommodate new bike racks. The existing bike racks at the Robert Trail Library and Church of St. Joseph and school were either too few in number or worn down. The new racks consist of durable steel tubes that are covered by a thermoplastic coating, which enabled the city to customize them with its own paint job. “Part of what we wanted to do was to put in a long-lasting product and to increase the visibility of the racks,” Lindahl said. “They’re all a Rosemount green.” Abby Anderson, 17, of Rosemount bikes frequently from her home to the Robert Trail Library in the summer. “My parents are both teachers, so they’re working this week,” Abby said. “So, I used my bike to get into town. It’s a nice ride, really, and it gives me exercise in the summer.” Abby said she immediately noticed the bike racks on Aug. 31, the first time she had been to the library since
BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Rosemount residents looking for more places to park their bikes will be pleasantly surprised. On Aug. 23, the city installed nine new bike racks at various locations across the city. Receiving one new rack each are the Robert Trail Library, American Legion Post 65, and the First Baptist Church and School, said Rosemount City Planner Jason Lindahl. The Church of St. Joseph and its school and the Community of Hope Church each received three new racks, Lindahl said. In total, 94 bike stalls were added as part of the project, which was funded by a $10,500 State Health Improvement Program grant the city received. This summer, the city mailed a postcard to each business and nonprofit organization in Rosemount seeking to generate interest in the bike racks, said Lindahl. Within two weeks, the city received 10 responses, some of which were locations that didn’t have the room or

Remembering 9/11 and our patriotism within our country and communties When America was attacked with fierce malevolence by a group of individuals whose primary goal was simply to kill Americans, it awakened the majority of its citizenry to a sense of patriotism that is continuing to this day. Unfortunately, that patriotism had been dormant for several decades, but the attack gave that same majority renewed pride in being Americans. This resurgence of patriotism and pride is still being expressed in many forms, namely through private- and nonprofit-sector organizations. But shortly after the attack, a small minority of individuals, and institutions, did not (and probably still do not) share those sentiments. Although many of these forms of patriotism continue to be symbolic in nature, they are an outward expression of something that has been deep in the hearts of all of us who continue to be proud citizens of the greatest nation in history. Though, we the majority may not need these symbols of patriotism to feel the pride in being an American, it is still heartwarming to see public displays of it at communitywide events held each and every year, along with the private homes displaying Old Glory proudly. The exception regarding this resurgence of patriotism and American pride lies with a minority of Americans who abhor “flag waving.” Interestingly enough, they find themselves conflicted, and it is eating them up inside since they know they hold a very unpopular view. These individuals think
MICHAEL RICCI Burnsville/Lakeville Community Editor
expressing patriotism is in some way offensive and arrogant, and this thinking was not limited to the thoughts of those hanging out at their respective coffee shop sipping their double-mocha-espressolatte cappuccino, as it has reared its ugly head in the halls of academia and many other segments of society, some of which are taxpayerfunded. Reported only nine days after the attack by the Ft. Meyers News-Press, librarians at a Florida university were told they could not wear “I’m proud to be American” stickers on their clothing, for fear that it may offend foreign students attending the university. This decision was clearly made with its roots undoubtedly in the all too familiar and pervasive ideology of political correctness. As anyone who respects the freedom and opportunity granted to us by our constitution might imagine, this ridiculous policy choice prompted a reaction by many who were equally offended. Fortunately, the idiotic policy was reversed after alumni and students loudly voiced their protest. Also only nine days after the attack, the Los Angeles Times reported the views of three individuals. A Los Angeles area educator said, “I grew up suspicious of the flag. It meant right-wing politics. It meant repression. It meant
arrogance. It meant ‘We’re the greatest.’” The host of a public radio show said, “…waving the flag feels like giving carte blanche to Congress and the president to do whatever. And I don’t believe that.” And a Venice, Calif., political activist said, “Haven’t people learned anything in the last 30 years? Haven’t they been watching what America has been doing around the world? Instead of feeling humility and compassion, it seems like the flag is being flown to just arrogantly continue what we’ve been doing.” It was remarkable to see that someone in the education field had such an angry and bitter view of the American Flag, and by extension all that it represents. This is someone society entrusts to teach? How do you suppose that others in the education field here in Minnesota who share the same view teach American history? This question of course is rhetorical since we all know that American history is either not taught in many of our schools, or it is taught in revisionist form. Especially shocking were the views coming from the public radio show host. How did the highly patriotic establishment of taxpayer-funded public broadcasting ever allow for such anti-American discourse on its airwaves? Yes, another rhetorical question, as if we expect anything less from it. Public broadcasting has long been a vehicle for certain people to spew such nonsense. And not surprising was that the criticism of America by the political activist was unsubstantiated. The memory of anyone who describes him-
self or herself as any kind of activist is probably too fried from drugs to remember the last 30 days let alone the last 30 years. Perhaps that activist should remain silent until he or she gets a real job and begins to contribute to society more productively. It is through such responsible living that one begins to experience the selfreliance, arguably one of the principles upon which our country was founded, that has made America the greatest place to live and call home. Many people from all over the world come to this country to become proud, patriotic Americans and realize the American dream. They flee their homelands that fail to provide the opportunity available here in the United States. Like them, my ancestors came to this country from Italy and Poland poor, uneducated, and unable to speak the language. And like all the others who came from all corners of the world, they too shared the American dream — a dream that is not immediately recognized once one steps off the boat but rather worked for and handed down incrementally to future generations. As my father and mother were provided more opportunities than their parents, I too am being provided opportunities that were not only unavailable to them, but also inconceivable to all of my grandparents. I am proud of my ancestors who took the risk of leaving their home country for a new world, and I am even more unabashedly proud to be a patriotic American myself, fully aware of the opportunity this land offers.

“I’m doing everything right, so how could I have heart disease?” Abby Anderson, 17, of Rosemount locks her bicycle Aug. 31 at the Robert Trail Library. The library was one of five locations in Rosemount that received new bike racks from the city. In total, 94 new bike stalls were added as part of the project. (Photo by Matthew Hankey • Sun Newspapers)
Bike racks FROM PAGE 5 the racks were installed. Before the library received new racks, Abby said many bikes were often cluttered around the old racks and the ground around that area. Now, that problem appears to be fixed. “They seem to be more spaced out so [the bikes] are not all tangled together,” Abby said. Robert Trail Library Branch Manager Jamie Jurgenson said the library wanted new bike racks installed as a service to its many twowheeled vehicle customers. “We thought it would be a good idea to have more bike spaces for our patrons,” Jurgenson said. “During the summer, we got a lot of patrons who like to ride their bike to the library.” At the American Legion Post 65, there were no bike racks before the city installed one. “We have a lot of bike riders and they were laying their bikes up against the building,” said General Manager Jeni Behnke. “The riders were asking for something they could lock it up to.” Behnke said she has seen more people bike to the Legion recently, including some employees. The bike racks
are more likely to be full at night, Behnke said, when the typical crowd consists of patrons in their early 20s to 40s, she said. “I thought it was a great program to get onto,” Behnke said. “It gives our customers a good way of getting out here without driving.” Church of St. Joseph School Principal Tom Joseph said there isn’t much bike traffic to the school, but is seeing a gradual change. “We don’t have a lot of students who have been biking but it is increasing,” Joseph said. “The big thing is, of course, is to get them here safely.” The school’s previous bike racks were moved to the playground to make room for the new racks in front of the school, which can accommodate 30 bikes, Joseph said. “We had two little stalls,” Joseph said. “I think they maybe accommodated 12 [bikes] all together. They were fine but they weren’t as sturdy.” Overall, Lindahl said the city has seen an increase in pedestrian and biking activity, especially at the annual Leprechaun Days event this summer. The parks and recreation department moved 13 bike racks from various parks to Central Park for the annual festival. “Those racks were well-used during that time,” Lindahl said.

September’s workshop will be helpful to photographers of all experience levels who intend to enter images into Caponi Art Park’s annual photography contest and exhibition, a yearly juried exhibition that currently invites digital photo submissions until Oct. 9. The course will cover basic camera features and functions, composition, and using the macro setting. Workshop participants will have time to take pictures after the course and meet with Michael Proebstle from Legacy Creative Images for a brief Q&A session. The class is free to the public, with a $4 suggested donation. The public is invited to submit photographs of Caponi Art Park to the 4th annual photography contest and exhibition between now and Oct. 9. Up to five images per person of the art park taken during the 2011 season can be entered. All entrants will be eligible to win a cash prize from sponsor Legacy Creative Images. Cash prizes will be awarded in
both adult and youth (14 and under) categories. First place in each category will win $75 and an enlarged print of their photo. Second place winners will receive $50. New this year, select photographs will be showcased in an exhibition at the Eagan Community Center in late October. The winning photographs will also be announced in Caponi Art Park’s e-newsletter and to local newspapers, posted online and used in promotional materials. For more information: caponiartpark.org/programs/photocontest/2011/.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Coats for Kids campaign is just around the corner Winter will be here before you know it, and a lot of kids will need coats. Sun Newspapers and Pilgrim Cleaners are once again sponsoring the Coats for Kids campaign, and this year’s goal is to collect 10,000 coats for needy children and families in the area. The public can donate new and gently used children’s coats at any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners throughout the metro area during the collection period, which runs Monday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Oct. 8. Schools can also organize their own collections for the campaign. The school that collects the most coats will get a Subway party. Pilgrim Cleaners will clean all used coats collected. Then the new and used coats will be donated to eight charities: Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and
Minneapolis, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. Those who wish to send a cash donation should send it to the “Coats for Kids Fund” c/o Pilgrim Cleaners, 3217 85th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park 55443. The entire donation will go toward the purchase of new coats for children. To find the nearest Pilgrim Cleaners location, visit pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Info: 763-425-7524, ext. 226 (Judy).

Kline said. Emcee for the 3 p.m. ceremonies will be Ramona Dohman, former Maple Grove police chief and current Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner. The keynote speaker will be Michael Murphy, ambulance supervisor at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, and Dayton is tentatively scheduled to speak at the ceremony. Eden Prairie Mayor Nancy TyraLukens and Eden Prairie Fire Chief George Esbensen will also speak, and state legislators and U.S. Congressional representatives from Minnesota have also been invited. A band and a soloist with piano and bugle accompanists are also expected to perform. There will be several honor and color guards representing fire, police and EMS at the ceremony. A bell ceremony will honor fallen comrades, a fire department tradition. Grace Church has a high capacity and plenty of property, so Kline and Springer are hoping for a large turnout. They hope for a few thousand, but their turnout optimism speaks for their dedication. “I’d love to see 10,000 people out here that day,” Springer said. “Oh, we’d love it,” Kline said.

Exercise can benefit every age group Even moderate amounts of exercise show distinct benefits BY ROXI REJALI – CONTRIBUTING WRITER When Deb Sellstedt misses a workout, she feels out of sorts. At least twice a week, she works out at the Fit U Studio in Burnsville. After more than a year of exercise, the trim and petite 60-year-old reports more energy and less back pain caused by scoliosis or curvature of the spine. “There have been a few weeks when I was only able to go once a week and I didn’t even feel right. I just felt like something was missing,” said the Burnsville resident. “It gives you the sense that you’re doing something good for yourself.” Sellstedt is on her feet up to 10 hours a day as assistant general manager of a White Castle restaurant in Apple Valley. “It seems like it’s easier to get through the work day, since I’ve been coming here,” she said. Sellstedt is reaping the rewards of exercise. A growing body of research shows that exercise is good for people at any age.
Exercise can play an important role in controlling the growing national epidemic of obesity. Thirty-four percent of U.S. adults are obese, while 17 percent of children and teens are obese, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fitness is important for children because it builds healthy muscles, bones and joints. Most kids need an hour of exercise a day. It sounds like a lot, but most children get that amount walking to school, playing on a jungle gym or climbing trees. Teenagers may get their quota during physical education classes or competitive sports like basketball or swimming. Exercise can help adults lose and maintain weight, reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Physical activity can also improve mental health and mood, reducing the risk of depression and improving sleep. Exercise is even more important for older adults, increasing their chance of living independently and continuing to do everyday activities like climbing stairs, shopping for groceries or playing with grandchildren. Muscle strength and balance exercises can also help prevent injuries caused by falls, according to the CDC.

Fitness advice can be confusing and contradictory, even if it comes from the experts. CDC guidelines call for at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity for adults. But in August, a much-publicized study in The Lancet health journal showed that adults who exercised for as little as 15 minutes per day had a 3-year longer life expectancy than adults who didn’t exercise at all. The benefits applied to men and women of all age groups and even to those with heart disease. Those conflicting guidelines may discourage many people from doing any exercise at all, said Mark Blegen, associate professor of exercise and sport science at St. Catherine University in St. Paul. A more successful and realistic strategy may be to encourage people to add smaller increments of activity to their day. “If we can build some activity into people’s day, then we may not have to sit here and say, ‘You’ve got to go and sweat your behind off at the gym for 30 to 60 minutes,’” he said. Those small steps that can add up to big fitness gains, Blegen said. For example, consider taking the stairs instead of an elevator or parking your car farther

While sitting at an office desk, take breaks every hour to stand up, stretch and walk around. Group activities are a natural for families, he said. Parents might take a child to a park, playground or swimming pool or invite family members to take the dog for a walk around the neighborhood. “I think that’s a wonderful thing, because not only are you not sitting down now, but you’re modeling behavior for your child that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives,” he said.

CHRIST LUTHERAN
Our desire is to simply follow Jesus and encourage others to do the same. If you are searching for a deeper walk with God and a fellowship of people who can encourage you in that journey, we hope you will come and join us as we strive to serve the Lord and bless others. The Churches of Christ are part of a unity and “back to the Bible movement that has roots in the Reformation. This movement gained momentum in the United States in the early 1800s. It is often referred to as the “Restoration Movement because of the desire to restore qualities and characteristics of the church described in the New Testament. Since the focus of the early church was on the life, death, burial, resurrection, ascension and coming of Jesus Christ; it is ours as well.

Student FROM PAGE 1 Hannah. “She’s going to start school the same day as I.” Ingrid Nanne, local coordinator for International Experience, said she enjoys seeing the transformation of both the student and host families throughout their year together. “I find it fun to see the students growing in the process and learn the culture and become more comfortable,” Nanne said. “And to see how the host families open up their house. It’s a great experience.” Nanne said the program is open to anyone who wants to host a student – not just families with a child the same age as the student. Empty nesters, retirees and single-parent families can all host a foreign exchange student. “It’s interesting to have such a broad range of families hosting students,” Nanne said. Montenegro is an eastern European country east of Italy across the Adriatic Sea and bordered by Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast and Albania to the southeast. Nina said she wants to immerse herself in American culture and to improve her English while living in Minnesota. She has taken English classes since fifth grade, but knows improving her English will help her down the road after high school. “I was told it would be good for me because next year, I’m going to go to college,” said Nina, who wants to specialize in interior design, perhaps at a university in Belgrade, Serbia. As far as American culture is concerned, Nina is getting an education on typical Minnesotan summer events. On Aug. 28, Nina took in a Minnesota Twins game and an excursion to the state fair. Budva – population 17,000 – has a summer festival, but nothing on the level of the “Great Minnesota Get Together.” “It’s a lot of people and a lot of food,” Nina said of the state fair, adding she enjoyed eating garlic fries, chocolate covered strawberries and pronto pubs. “The food at home is so different from here.” An avid shopper, Nina has already made one trip to the Mall of America, where she bought clothes and a laptop computer. She has been using the laptop to Skype with her friends and family back home. “I talk with them every day,” Nina said. Though her hometown is more than 5,000 miles away, Nina is no stranger
Nina Rajkovic, right, and Hannah Halvorson, left, hang out in Nina’s bedroom Aug. 18 at her host family’s home in Apple Valley. Budva is located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea and is a burgeoning tourist town for eastern Europeans. It also has the distinction of the smallest city to host a Rolling Stones concert, back in 2007. Nina was in attendance for that show. “They are still famous and great,” she said. Stojakovic said it’s a special feeling that she and Halvorson can host a student from Montenegro, which was once part her native country, Serbia. Stojakovic moved to the United States about 10 years ago. “Nina is about the same age now as I was when I moved to U.S.,” Stojakovic said. “To be able to watch her go through the similar things, thoughts and experiences that I did and help her through it is incredible. For me, to be able to give such an opportunity to someone from my
native country is very special, rewarding and enriching. What Nina is able to give me, as I am able to give her also, is a little bit of the home, here, 5000 miles away.” Nina is excited, and a little nervous, to begin classes at Rosemount High School. She will take courses in economics, photography, math, history, English, introduction to art and Spanish. “We don’t have a chance to study Spanish at home and I wanted to study something new, another language,” Nina said. She also speaks Montenegrian, Italian, English and some German. In Budva, Nina learned British English and the transition to learning American English has made for some interesting miscommunications. For instance, “toilet” in British English translates to “bathroom” in the Unites States.
Halvorson said Nina once told him she was in the toilet for an hour doing her hair. “I thought that was pretty crazy,” Halvorson said. “Maybe they do that in Budva,” he joked. Nina is the first student Halvorson and Stojakovic have hosted and they’re still getting used to the roles each person plays around the house. “She tried to do the dishes and I said, ‘No, no, that’s OK,’” Halvorson said. “But, she wants to be part of the family, so we’ve been getting used to that.” One strong connection Halvorson and Stojakovic have with Nina is their love of snowboarding. The International Experience takes common interests into account when matching students with host families. Nina has been snowboarding for STUDENT: TO NEXT PAGE

Nina is accustomed to seeing snow one month a year and admits a long winter is not something she’s looking forward to. Halvorson said the whole family is planning a trip to California later in the year. They plan on snowboarding near Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. He wants Nina to explore the country beyond our state’s borders. “We don’t just want to get a sense of Minnesotan culture, but American culture on the whole,” Halvorson said. Colorado, Chicago and
New York City are all on the short list of possible trip destinations, as well. Nina hopes they make it to New York City. “Everybody told me its amazing – the tall buildings and trains full of people,” Nina said. “New York is on top of everything in fashion.” Though Nina is Halvorson’s first foreign exchange student, he’s familiar with the host family and student relationship dynamic. His grandmother hosted a student from Brazil when his father was 18. After their time together ended, his grandmother kept in contact with the student for many years and even visited the student in Brazil. “It lasted a long time,” Halvorson said of his grandmother’s relationship with her student. “To be able to see that and want that type of relationship, not only for

myself, but for Hannah. For Hannah, at the age of six, she gets that experience for the rest of her life.” Halvorson, Stojakovic and Hannah are already planning a trip to Serbia and Montenegro in the fall of 2012. Though plans are not yet finalized, there’s a good chance they will be able to see Nina and her family in her home country. Halvorson already has a grasp of the unique opportunity he and his family have by hosting a foreign exchange student. They’re making friendships and connections he hopes will last forever. “I just think it’s important,” Halvorson said. “There’s more to life and more than things going on in Minnesota. Yeah, it’s only 10 months, but it’s also lifelasting.” Info: usa.internationalexperience.net or 952-3035473.

Lakeville North 42-17 victory over Eastview could get pollsters’ attention Panthers drub Eastview in SSC football opener BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Beware the team that thinks it’s being disrespected. Lakeville North looked at the preseason Class 5A football rankings, saw its name nowhere in the top 10, and thought, “why not?” Worse yet, one forecast of the South Suburban Conference standings had the Panthers placing fifth in the 10team league. That riled them up. “We didn’t understand it,” North quarterback Trey Heid said. “We have more returning players than just about any team in the state. More fuel for the fire, I guess.” That fire torched eighth-ranked Eastview in a 42-17 Lakeville North victory Sept. 1 in a sweltering South Suburban opener for both teams. The Lightning, with one returning starter on defense, had trouble keeping up with the North offense, which rolled for 421 yards. “It’s a long season. Right now Lakeville North is a better team than we are,” Eastview coach Kelly Sherwin said. “For us, the key is, what kind of team are we going to be six or seven weeks from now?” North coach Brian Vossen said the Panthers set a goal of 40 points for the season opener. They got there with help from their defense, which returned an interception for a touchdown in the first quarter. It wasn’t the best start for Lakeville North, which lost a fumble near the
Eastview goal line after marching down the field on its first possession. But after the defense forced Eastview to punt, Panthers junior Brandon Morgan returned it 42 yards to the Eastview 8-yard line. Heid scored on an 8-yard run two plays later. Moments later, North cornerback Zach Creighton returned an interception 23 yards for a score and Panthers were up 13-0. Eastview regrouped and drove 93 yards for a score, with the final play a 27-yard pass from Ryan Reger to Kenyon Phillips. That meant two teams that couldn’t muster a touchdown between the in the 2010 season opener (North won that game 3-0 in overtime) combined for three scores in the first 12 minutes of the 2011 season opener. And North wasn’t done. Heid’s 22yard pass to Charlie Hayes made it 19-7 early in the second quarter. Eastview has almost 600 pounds of force on the right side of its offensive line (305-pound guard Zack Johnson and 280-pound tackle Michael Backus, but the Lightning couldn’t make optimum use of it because it was playing catch-up the entire game. Football FROM PREVIOUS PAGE had a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs and Isaac Sandberg scored on an 8-yard run. Heid completed 19 of 24 passes – including all nine of his throws in the second half – for 224 yards. Hayes caught 11 passes for 130 yards, and Sandberg rushed 12 times for 105 yards. “Their quarterback [Heid] was outstanding,” Sherwin said. “And they protected him well, Even when the pocket collapsed, he was able to make something out of it.” The temperature was about 90 degrees at kickoff, and conditions required periodic stoppages for water breaks. “Because of the heat, we were a little thin in the backfield,” Sherwin said. “That took us out of some things we wanted to do. Lakeville North took us out of a lot of things we wanted to do.” We’ll find out soon if the rankings pollsters took note of Lakeville North’s performance. Heid said he believes the Panthers have made a strong case to be ranked. “We punted once tonight,” he said. “They stopped us once. And our defense was great. “I think we made our point.”

Also on Opening Week • Defending South Suburban Conference champion Rosemount defeated Bloomington Kennedy 28-6 in its 2011 season opener. Senior running back Logan Lindberg scored three touchdowns, one on a 76-yard punt return and two on passes from senior quarterback Nate Lemoine (19 and 13 yards). Lindberg also kicked four extra points. Lemoine completed seven of 14 passes for 106 yards. • Bloomington Jefferson spoiled Tyler Krebs’ debut as Burnsville head coach, edging the Blaze 20-18. Jefferson scored all of its points in the second half in erasing a 6-0 Burnsville halftime lead. One problem for the Blaze was failing to get a conversion after each of its three touchdowns. • Apple Valley lost 47-9 to Hopkins in a non-conference game at Hopkins High School. Eagles quarterback Matt Thomas scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter. A 65-yard pass from Thomas to Steven Wilson helped set up the touchdown. Junior linebacker Riley Berg got a safety for Apple Valley by tackling a Hopkins running back in the end zone. • Because of early Labor Day holiday deadlines, the Sept. 2 Lakeville SouthEagan game took place after this edi-

Notebook: AV’s state-record winning streak ends BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Apple Valley High School’s staterecord 48-game boys soccer winning streak ended Aug. 29 when the Eagles lost to Holy Family 2-1 in overtime at Johnny Cake Ridge Park. A penalty kick in overtime was the difference for the Fire. After allowing a Holy Family goal in the first, the Eagles tied the game with a goal in the second half. Apple Valley’s last loss was in the 2008 state Class AA quarterfinals. The Eagles went 23-0 in winning the 2009 state title and 24-0 in winning the 2010 championship. They defeated Owatonna 3-1 in their 2011 season opener Aug. 25. The previous state-record winning streak was 40, set by Stillwater in 1995-97. The Stillwater teams of that era also have the state’s longest unbeaten streak at 62 games. Apple Valley’s 48-game winning run is also the state’s second-longest unbeaten streak.
O’Brien ranked 1st Burnsville senior Cole O’Brien is ranked first among Class AA boys individuals in the first state high school cross country coaches association rankings. O’Brien was second at the 2010 state Class AA meet. He missed the end of the 2011 spring track season because of a leg injury. South Suburban Conference teams are prominent in the Class AA rankings. Rosemount is ranked third among boys teams, with Eastview and Burnsville tied for ninth. On the girls side, Lakeville South is ranked second behind Monticello, with Rosemount at No. 12. Rosemount’s Nathan Rock is seventh in the Class AA boys individual rankings. Eagan junior Elizabeth Frick is ranked 11th among Class AA girls.
Changes at LV North The Lakeville School District has posted openings for a head boys hockey coach
and head softball coach, meaning that longtime Lakeville coach Randy Schmitz is not returning in those two positions. Schmitz coached Lakeville High School and Lakeville North boys hockey teams to six state tournament appearances. The Panthers’ best finish at state was in 2011, when they won the consolation championship in the Class AA tournament and finished fifth overall. Schmitz also was coach of Lakeville softball teams that finished second in the 2001 and 2005 state Class 3A tournaments. Other coaching openings in the Lakeville district include head coaching positions for softball and girls lacrosse at Lakeville South High School.
LV South field issues Several Lakeville South High School athletic events – including the Sept. 2 season-opening football game against Eagan – were relocated because of what school officials determined were unplayable conditions at the Lakeville South stadium field.
Most of the games were moved to Lakeville North High School, which has an artificial turf field at its stadium. The Lakeville South stadium has a grass field. These upcoming Lakeville South soccer games will be played at Lakeville North: • Boys and girls vs. Chaska, 3 and 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. • Boys and girls vs. Burnsville, 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13. No lower-level Lakeville South football or soccer games were moved or rescheduled. In a statement on the high school’s website, Lakeville South activities director Neil Strader said unfavorable weather during the summer set back the field preparation.
