Postal Service sues union over lockers BY JESSICA HARPER SUN NEWSPAPERS

AV man launches a new kind of ‘mac’ truck Mobile restaurant specializes in mac ‘n cheese, sandwiches BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS One south metro businessman has redefined the term “mac truck.”

Apple Valley businessman Kevin Huyck officially launched his new mobile restaurant Jan. 28 at the St. Paul Winter Carnival, and with spring right around the corner, Huyck will be taking his business on the road – literally, by traveling to select locations in St. Paul and the south metro. Called R.A. MacSammy’s, Huyck said he named his business in part after his children, Randall, 13, and Avery, 16,

and he let the rest speak for itself, an emphasis on macaroni and cheese, sandwiches, and soups. Though the debuted his R.A. MacSammy’s truck in late January and early February, Huyck hasn’t been too active in the community yet as he is waiting for warmer weather.

The U.S. Postal Service has taken its union to court over employee lockers in Eagan. A lawsuit was filed this week in hopes of overturning an arbitration ruling that requires the Postal Service to install larger lockers at its processing and distribution center in Eagan. Though it may seem inconsequential, the expense of installing larger lockers would be $200,000, according to a Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal report. The issue surfaced two years ago when the American Postal Workers Union filed a work-condition grievance against the Postal Service. In it, the union claimed employees’ existing lockers were too narrow and short to

FROM PAGE 1 accommodate winter gear. In December, arbitrator Hamah King ordered management at the center to install lockers at least as large as those at the facilities the new center replaced. The postal service argued it would create too great of a financial burden. The federal lawsuit filed March 2 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges King’s ruling “ignored relevant contract language and … disregards the applicable regulation.” It contends that the facility’s lockers abided by federal regulations, but the arbitrator said those regulations didn’t apply to the plant in Eagan. The suit states King also failed to prop-

erly consider the collective bargaining agreement between the Postal Service and the union when forming his opinion. APWU spokeswoman Sally Davidow said she has not yet seen the lawsuit, and declined to comment further. Peter Nowacki, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, also declined to comment on the litigation. The Postal Service announced in late February it plans to move mail processing to the Eagan facility from Duluth and Rochester in Minnesota, and La Crosse and Eau Claire in Wisconsin. Its consolidation plan is aimed at reducing the Postal Service’s growing deficit, which is predicted to be approximately $12 billion in 2012. Jessica Harper jessica.harper@ecm-inc.com.

Rosemount sees surge in development Mayor highlights accomplishments in the past year BY TAD JOHNSON – SUN NEWSPAPERS The city of Rosemount is emerging from the Great Recession with an economic development surge. Mayor Bill Droste highlighted this burst of new businesses moving to or expanding in Rosemount during his State of the City Address on Tuesday at the Steeple Center. The event, organized by the Dakota County Regional Chamber of Commerce, served as a way for Droste to emphasize the positive gains, which includes plastic-prototype manufacturer Proto Labs projecting to add 300 jobs to a Rosemount Business Park location. The gains also listed are a projected 82 new housing units this year from three different home builders; plans continuing for a new senior housing building and a park-and-ride location; and other new jobs at Hawkins Inc., Rosemount Clean Energy, Origination Inc. and the Federal Aviation Administration. Ruthe Batulis, chamber president, said Rosemount has been a quiet hotbed and that Droste’s speech was a way to highlight that positive news. “It is a touchstone of the times,” Batulis said. “It shows that Rosemount has a business-friendly environment.” Other businesses that have reinvested in the community in the past year include TOPS Pizza, which

roughly doubled the size of its restaurant, and Terry’s Hardware, which is in the a process of renovating its “main street” location. “Giving those businesses our support will ensure that they are present and able to support our community,” Droste said. Much of the suburban economy relies on a strong housing market. While Rosemount still has vacant homes due to foreclosure, there are signs that the housing market is rebounding. “We are hearing from Realtors that there is an uptick in their business,” Batulis said. “Rosemount has a great location, which is a few miles from the airport, Minneapolis and people still love the small-town feel.” From a city government perspective, Droste noted the city’s efforts to reduce the tax levy, which has fallen over the past four years, as residents have felt the effects of the sour economy. “We’ve held that line – actually, we’ve moved that line down – while still funding a prudent list of added items,” Droste said. He also pointed to the future as he says the city could be a prime site for a hotel development, according to a recent market study. In addition to that, he said, the city’s goals include bringing recreational facilities downtown and into other neighborhoods. Droste will record the speech for broadcast later this month on government access cable television channels. Tad Johnson is editor.thisweek@ecm-inc.com.

Longtime Apple Valley resident seeks DFL endorsement Roberta Gibbons has history in local politics, schools BY TAD JOHNSON – SUN NEWSPAPERS Roberta Gibbons can trace her political aspirations to a State Capitol field trip when she was only a sixth-grader. Now that school child is embarking on a campaign to be the state representative of an area of Dakota County she’s called home for the past 20 years. Gibbons is the only DFL candidate to file to seek the House District 57A endorsement (the old 37A), which will be handed out at the March 17 convention. She would face Rep. Tara Mack, RApple Valley, who has served two terms in the House. Gibbons said she plans to tell the delegates that her message is about fairness, from tax policy to transportation options and job opportunities to access to education. Gibbons has worked on political campaigns and with the local DFL senate district for about the past 10 years. She’s knocked on doors, served as associate chair and chairperson of the old Senate District Roberta Givens 37. While serving as the chairperson of the senate district in 2003, she said she helped enhance the organization’s email and website comm u n i c a t i o n s . Gibbons and her husband lived in Eagan and Inver Grove Heights for seven years prior to moving to Apple Valley in 1992, in large part to be in School District 196. She said one of the major reasons she is running for elective office is that School District 196 has fallen from No. 1 in the state to No. 37, according to one school-rating organization. Gibbons said the main reason the district has fallen in the rankings is that its state funding has been reduced in recent years and that has necessitated program cuts and teacher layoffs. “There is some kind of disconnect,” Gibbons said. “We are not placing as much importance on education as we did in the past.”

She points out that the financial situation in District 196 could have been much worse this year if it hadn’t received one-time stimulus money of $5 million from the Federal Education Jobs Fund. “(Education) is so important because they are going to be taking care of us when we get old,” said Gibbons, who directed fundraisers while serving on the Cedar Park Elementary School Finance Committee. She views stable funding for K-12 and higher education as investments in job creation as local employers get skilled workers. She is concerned about the rising cost of tuition as state funding has been reduced to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. “Every kid should be able to afford college and they shouldn’t have to break the bank to do it,” she said. Another focus of Gibbons’ campaign will be on job creation. She said the state needs to work with MnSCU colleges to make sure they are offering the kinds of programs and degrees that employers will require. “When I was on the door steps of people in the campaign, one overriding theme I heard from people is getting jobs,” Gibbons said. Job creation and retention are keys to solving many current problems, according to Gibbons. When more people are working, Gibbons said, it reduces the tax burden on everyone, it helps support local businesses because people now have money to spend, and home ownership increases to fuel the property-tax base, which funds local governments. She said she supports Gov. Mark Dayton’s idea of funding road and other construction projects as a way to create jobs. In response to the criticism that such job creation is only temporary, Gibbons said construction work is already a cyclical kind of employment and the sector needs a bridge to when she says the economy will improve. Gibbons will be taking her message to the delegates of 57A, which now includes a south portion of Apple Valley and a northeast portion of Lakeville. It’s a demographic that is largely the same as the old 37A that she served as a Senate District party leader. She’s hoping that familiarity will help her as the

campaign takes shape. Thisweek Newspapers will run a series of stories about local political candidates in the coming weeks, including M a c k . Tad Johnson is at editor.thisweek@ecminc.com.

Time is now to vote on the stadium bill Minnesotans say they treasure the Minnesota Vikings football team, but they don’t want to help pay for a new stadium to keep them. That’s the dilemma for the Minnesota Legislature that keeps stalling, hoping they can put this decision off until after the November elections. Meanwhile, the Vikings insist they want a new $975 million stadium and are willing to pay more than $427 million of the cost, as long as someone else pays the remaining $548 million. The central question, however, is not how to pay for it and where to put it. The bottom line is: How important is the Viking team to the quality of life of Minnesotans? If the consensus of the people is to keep the Vikings because they add so much value to the state’s quality of life, then all the people should help pay for a new stadium that will keep them here. This burden should not fall on Minneapolis residents alone through the array of taxes they pay now for facilities like Target Field, the Minneapolis Convention Center and Target Center. Nor should it fall on only those who would pay for electronic pull-tabs, as proposed in the

latest stadium plan. The latest plan calls for a $975 million stadium east of the Metrodome in Minneapolis. It would be financed by $427 million by the Vikings, $150 million by Minneapolis through sales and luxury taxes and $398 million by state-run electronic-pulltabs. This plan still has to be approved by a reluctant Minnesota Legislature and Minneapolis City Council, who fear the backlash from those who question the Vikings deal when compared to the state’s need to close a budget deficit, to pay for $2.1 billion in withheld payments to school districts and to fund human services. Since this issue has dragged on for 10 years and a plan has been put together for the Legislature, this is the session to vote it up or down. Waiting won’t lead to a better solution. Minnesotans want to believe the Vikings will never leave for a city with a modern stadium. Don’t they recall how the state lost its NBA franchise the Minneapolis Lakers to Los Angeles and the Minnesota North Stars NHL hockey team to Dallas? Have they forgotten how the state fought and regained new hockey and basketball franchises by having to build Target Center and the Xcel Center? A major policy question is: should the state

continue to fund entertainment venues for its residents with local and state taxes? Why not? There’s state and local tax dollars in the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Target Field in Minneapolis, the National Sports Center in Blaine, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, the Mall of America in Bloomington and the TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus. The most recent case of public financing is Target Field in Minneapolis where there is a 0.15 percent sales tax paying two-thirds of the cost. People are raving about this stadium, even as they help pay for it when they buy something in Hennepin County. A consensus is developing that keeping the Vikings maintains the state’s quality of life and a stadium plan is on the table. Let’s vote. — An editorial from the ECM Publishers Editorial Board. Nathan FROM PREVIOUS PAGE · Today’s students report that their parents are more engaged than did students in 1988. Last year, 64 percent of students reported that they talk to their parents about school every day. That’s up from 40 percent who reported daily conversations in 1988. Over the same period, the number of students reporting that their parents visit their school at least once a month has almost tripled, from 16 to 46 percent. Both talking with youngsters about what’s happening, and visiting the school, are ways to encourage young people. These are positive changes. I would not have expected such large increases, but they show that many parents are hearing the message about the importance of being involved in their youngster’s education. · Teacher job satisfaction has dropped 18 points from 2008, to the lowest levels in more than 20 years. The number of “very satisfied” teachers has declined from 62 percent in 2008 to 44 percent last year. The number of teachers who feel that their job is not secure has increased from eight percent in 2006 to 34 percent in 2011. Seventy-six percent of teachers report that their school’s budget decreased during the last year. Sixty-six percent report there were layoffs of teachers or other staff in the last year. Enduring bootcamp and becoming a Marine is not dehumanizing, but is something to be proud of To the editor: From a wife and mother of a marine: Thank you for running the article on the Marine Corps. grams in art and music last year. Many parents and students also are worried. While 34 percent of teachers feel their job is not secure, “62 percent of parents and 54 percent of students worry about the parents losing or not being able to find a job.” Seventy-two percent of parents and 65 percent of students “worry about their family not having enough money for the things they need.” The report urges greater collaboration among different groups. It cites the value of buildings where schools and community groups share space, making more effective and efficient use of funds. I’ll be writing more about this idea in future columns. There is much more in the report, which is why I encourage you to read it. Many schools already survey faculty, families and students. I think the best use of the report would be for schools to conduct similar surveys, using at least some of the Met Life questions, and then share results. By itself, a survey does not improve anything. But it can help identify strengths and shortcomings. A survey also can help identify progress and priorities. Made possible through a partnership between Minnesota Waters and Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, the “Watershed Association Initiative” is beginning its sixth year of grants. With more than 120 lakes in Hennepin County, Program Coordinator with Minnesota Waters, Alex Gehrig, says the more the merrier. “We’d love to see a citizen-based organization on every one of those lakes,” Gehrig said. The program provides mini-grants of $500 to organize. “Sometimes there are just those costs associated with forming a group,” Gehrig said. “You want to put on a community event, and will need to apply for a nonprofit status with the

state, you’ll need a little bit of cash to get moving.” Once established, the Member Match Fund matches member dues and donations up to $1,000 to help fund the projects. The formation of lake associations is to help fight the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species and to help protect water quality. And all it takes is three to five people to want to make a difference. “Usually a group of people that has things in common with the lake that you like about it and you would want to do for it,” Gehrig said.

How to form an association A Steering Committee is then formed where Gehrig says he becomes involved. They then develop a talking point on what’s common within the group, taking the ideas to the community and holding community meetings. After that, they would then file for nonprofit status, where they then could begin the action planning. As more AIS make their way toward metro waters, communications director with MCWD Telly Mamayek says

it’s more imperative than ever to get citizen involvement. “The formation of lake associations are ways for citizens to become involved to advocate for their lake and be active in water quality i s s u e s , ” Mamayek said. “Anytime we can work with an engaged citizen group it is a more effective way of doing what we can to improve the water resource and water quality.” As AIS continue to become more a part of life, Mamyek says they are seeing a lot more citizen interest in lakes and their issues. This was seen when a group of three lake associations, including the Christmas Lake Association, began a grassroots effort to stop the spread of zebra mussels into their clean lakes. Advocating checkpoints and an access

gate, they wanted to do what it takes to stop zebra mussels from entering the lakes. Mamayek agrees in the sense that the state can’t do it alone and it will take a team effort to protect the bodies of water. “Active citizens are a tremendous aspect in this effort for AIS,” Mamayek said. On the ground, grassroots work is the backbone of the work to protect the bodies of water. Gehrig says people want to do something but they are not sure exactly where to go. “We want to make sure citizens have those resources so that they can take that positive action,” Gehrig said.

DCTC offering program tailored toward veterans Beginning in August, Dakota County Technical College will offer a new program specifically for veterans called the Yellow Ribbon Entrepreneurs Initiative. The program will be limited to veterans, which is designed to allow them to feel a sense of unity as they did throughout their military careers. According to officials, DCTC is committed to the needs of serving the veteran student in this program, including a “concierge” approach to application, financial aid, and academic advising. Veterans participating in the online Small Business and Entrepreneurship degree program are expected to come from

Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas. These students can find comfort in knowing that they will deal with faculty and counselors who have military experience or backgrounds, as well as understanding their struggles firsthand. Since 2001, more than 19,000 Minnesota National Guard members have been deployed to more than 33 countries. These returning veterans face incredible challenges fitting back into a traditional job and the home life they left prior to deployment. “It doesn’t help that the job market has changed dramatically in the same 10 year span,” said DCTC Instructor Christine Pigsley. The Yellow Ribbon Entrepreneurs Initiative will offer both a certificate option and an Associate in Science degree option to meet the needs of the veteran, many of whom have prior college or military experience and training that can be converted into credit for prior learning and a fast-track to graduation. The initia-

tive will kick off with an analysis of each veteran student’s past education and training to develop an individualized plan for their successful completion of an academic award. Info: 651-423-8231 (Christine Pigsley).

MacSammy’s FROM PAGE 1 “I have been cherry picking days depending on the weather. This week is the first week that I will have gone out everyday,” Huyck said of the week of March 5. Currently, Huyck’s truck is licensed to do business in St. Paul and the greater metro area. “I live in Apple Valley, and I definitely want to create a presence in Dakota County,” he said. “We are seeking out some locations in the Eagan, Burnsville and Lakeville areas that can draw from a large employment base.” A few locations Huyck intends to frequent in Dakota County include somewhere on Dodd Boulevard between Highways 3 and 55 in the neighborhood of Thomson Reuters in Eagan. He added another location would likely be along Highway 13 near Yankee Doodle Road, as well as area of County Road 42 on the west side of Burnsville and just into Savage. According to Huyck, who has more than 17 years of food service experience with him, his menu consists of a seemingly endless rotation of macaroni and cheese selections. “I make my own,” he said. “It’s all from scratch.”

www.minnlocal.com – Thursday, March 15, 2012 – Apple Valley, Rosemount & Eagan Sun-Current

Without actually referring to all items on his menu, Huyck said his menu would always include a classic four-cheese dish, as well as a “N’awlins” dish inspired by the Cajun cooking from New Orleans. Huyck also features a Greek macaroni and cheese dish with feta cheese, a pizza macaroni dish with white cheese, and a Cape Cod dish with lobster, artichoke, mushrooms and a touch of sherry. Huyck, who is not only the owner but also chef of R. A. MacSammy’s, brings his more than 15 years of cooking experience aboard the big yellow truck that houses a fully functional kitchen. “I was searching for an idea with as broad an appeal as possible,” he said. “When it came to me, I thought, ‘Of course! Who doesn’t like mac and cheese?’” But his menu also includes a wide variety of sandwiches, including a turkey chipotle, as well as some sandwich names that are a little more ambiguous. The Black Forest comes with ham, onions, Swiss cheese, mustard sauce, and more on pumpernickel. The Cuban features ham, dill pickles, pulled pork, Swiss cheese, and yellow mustard on a French role. “I have always got a grilled cheese on the menu as well,” Huyck said. When taking his truck on the road, Huyck doesn’t rely on the bright yellow paint to attract attention. Instead, he employs the use of social media to help

R.A. MacSammys owner and chef Kevin Huyck took a moment to point out the different areas of a fully functional kitchen on wheels. Huyck debuted R.A. MacSammys this past January during the St. Paul Winter Carnival. (Photo by Michael Ricci – Sun Newspapers) spread the word. “I put my location on Twitter, Facebook, and my website,” he said. “It definitely helps.” For those who may not be interested in mac and cheese of any kind, or even a “sammy,” a term that Huyck uses to refer to grilled cheese sandwiches, he said he’s experienced enough to handle requests of all kinds.

“My years of kitchen experience allows me to do just about anything,” he said, adding that R.A. MacSammy’s is available for special occasions, such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, business meetings and other like events. According to Huyck, R.A. MacSammy’s is comfort food on wheels, and he wishes it to be “your mom away from mom.” Info: ramacsammys.com.

Is your lake service provider state-certified? New law mandates training to help stop spread of AIS BY CHRIS DILLMANN – SUN NEWSPAPERS As what little ice that’s left melts off the lakes in Hennepin County, people are going to be gearing up for the summer. This means putting docks and boats back into the water. Yet, this season a new expectation on how that’s done is on the books. The Lake Minnetonka Conservation District and Minnehaha Creek Watershed District are urging people that hire lake service providers assure they are trained and certified by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Minnesota Waters is also partnering with the DNR in holding state-wide training sessions. “This training will help them detect if there are aquatic invasive species on equipment and how to decontaminate that equipment,” said communications director with MCWD Telly Mamayek. Lake service providers include dock installers, commercial marinas, commercial transport companies and boat repair companies. The MN DNR’s mandatory

training program was enacted by the State of Minnesota in 2011 to prevent the spread of AIS. The training and certification process is a three-hour training course, which most have gone through said executive director with the LMCD Greg Nybeck. “We just want to make sure when we use people they verify the providers they are using, which are mandated by law to go through the training and that they’ve gone through the training,” Nybeck said. As AIS continue to spread, the hope is this will be another weapon to fight the problem. “This has been a concern for awhile,” Mamayek said. “This is a primary way of transferring zebra mussels from one body of water to another.” Mamayek says it’s going to take the effort of everyone involved. “We want to enlist the help of as many people as possible in this effort,” Mamayek said. “It is not something that just one agency or one stakeholder group can do alone … we all have to be on the same page and doing what it takes to prevent the spread further.” To verify a lake service provider is properly trained and certified, visit dnr.state.mn.us or call 651-259-5100.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Eagan business doing its part to help animal-related causes With the help of Eagan shoppers, charitable donations are topping more than $250,000 for 2011 at Chuck & Don’s Pet Food Outlet, 250 Town Centre Drive. These donations will support animalrelated causes in Minnesota and Colorado. Donations include products, gift cards, cause, and sponsorship support and fundraisers for animal-related causes. Chuck & Don’s also donated more than 30,000 pounds of pet food to shelters, rescues, and individual causes in 2011, as well as more than 500 hours of

team member volunteer time. Chuck & Don’s most recent fundraising effort was its annual Paw Prints campaign, which took place during the 2011 holiday season. Through $1 Paw Print donations, shoppers at all Chuck & Don’s Minnesota locations raised $48,003 for Red Lakes Rosie’s Rescue, Minnesota Humane Society and St. Francis of Assisi Animal Rescue organizations. Chuck & Don’s is matching 25 percent of the donations for a total of more than $60,000, which is being split equitably between the organizations, all of which aim to reduce the number of unwanted animals through spay and neuter efforts. Donation checks were presented to Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue, Minnesota

Humane Society, and St. Francis of Assisi Animal Rescue at the Chuck & Don’s corporate office location in Mahtomedi.

Dakota County seeking volunteers for wetlands program Dakota County is seeking people to help monitor the health of community wetlands through the Wetland Health Evaluation Program. Volunteers work with a communitybased team to monitor and collect information that is used to help protect area wetlands. A science background or previous monitoring experience is not

required. All training and equipment is provided. WHEP volunteers gather data on macroinvertebrates – like beetles and dragonflies – and plants in wetlands. Cities use the data to study wetland health trends to better manage wetlands and surrounding areas. Volunteers receive training in field methods, macroinvertebrate collection and identification, and plant survey techniques and identification. Teams work under the direction of a team leader and are grouped by city. Each city WHEP team takes samples from three to five wetlands between June and August. Volunteers commit between 10–30 hours, in cluding training, fieldwork and lab analysis. Info: mnwhep.org or 952-891-7000.

had the puck hop over his stick with an open net in front of him). “Their goalie’s a good player, a lot of props to him, but we’ve got to find a way to put the puck in the net,” Zajac said. Senior forward Cody Mason scored two goals in Eagan’s 4-1 victory over Maple Grove in the consolation semifinals March 9 at Mariucci Arena. The Wildcats couldn’t get a shot past Bitzer in 51 minutes of playing time, but they needed only 26 seconds to score against Maple Grove goalie Kyle Koop. Mason scored in the first minute, Eli May made it 2-0 at 12:53 of the first period, and Eagan held the lead the rest of the way. Mason scored his second goal of the game at 6:38 of the third period. Merchant added an empty-net goal with 15 seconds remaining. Duluth East’s lethal power play broke open the March 10 consolation final. The Greyhounds, who entered the state tournament as the top-seeded team, scored twice with the man advantage in the third period and went on to

Justin Kloos winning the Mr. Hockey award is not necessarily a surprise, but according to his coach, it is deserved. “He’s a leader,” Lakeville South coach Kurt Weber said. “When I took this job seven years ago, I wanted to build a tradition. But I can’t do it myself. The kids have a lot to do with it. “Justin is a high-character, well-spoken kid.” And extremely talented. Kloos scored 103 points this season, the most of any Class AA player, and had 194 points the last two years. This season, despite being the player all opponents knew they had to check, he scored at least one point in every Cougars game but one. Kloos, a University of Minnesota recruit, had opportunities to go elsewhere to advance his career, as several other players with Lakeville ties have done. He stayed, and he said he has no regrets. “I’m a tradition guy,” he said following the Cougars’ 2-1 victory over Moorhead in the state Class AA thirdplace game March 10. “I want to build tradition in the Lakeville South program. For us to walk away with hardware, it’s a big deal for the community.” Kloos’ influence has been felt at all levels of the South program, Weber said. “I get a lot of e-mails from parents of kids who high-five our players as the come out of the tunnel,” Weber said. “When someone like Justin high-fives one of those kids, that’s what they go home and talk about.” Kloos was honored at a March 11 banquet at the RiverCentre in St. Paul. The award, given annually to the state’s top senior player, dates to 1985. Kloos is the first player from Lakeville to win it and the first from a Dakota County school since Apple Valley’s David Fischer in 2006. Eagan seniors Michael Zajac and Will Merchant were among the 10 finalists for the award. Moorhead’s Michael Bitzer won the

Eagan finishes sixth in state tournament BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS They watched as top players from other high schools left their teams, but a group of Eagan seniors never abandoned their goals. College or Junior A hockey would come soon enough, but before they left Eagan, the 11 seniors wanted to make sure they did their part to establish their school as a state power. Even though Eagan finished sixth in the state Class AA tournament last week, they left convinced they had done just that. “This program now has high expectations, and I think it has some tradition after going to the state tournament three times in the last seven years,” Eagan coach Mike Taylor said. “And it has a lot to do with this group of seniors.” Four Eagan seniors – Michael Zajac (Princeton), Will Merchant (Maine), Sam Wolfe (Maine) and Eli May (Minnesota State, Mankato) – have committed to Division I college programs. Some others will try Junior A hockey in an effort to attract attention from college teams. They saw players from other schools – some of whom they’ve been competing against for years – leave for juniors or the USA Hockey development program in Michigan. Some of those same opportunities likely were available to the Eagan players. But they stayed. Why? “That’s easy. It’s our friendship,” sen-

Eagan forward Nick Kuchera carries the puck out of the defensive zone during a state Class AA boys hockey quarterfinal game against Moorhead. (Photo by Rick Orndorf – Sun Newspapers) ior defenseman Derick Kuchera said. “We’ve played together on the pond since we were 3.” Even though this winter seldom was conducive to outdoor hockey, they got together as often as they could for various contests because bragging rights were important. “This is such a tight-knit group,” said senior forward Will Merchant, who is No. 2 on Eagan’s career scoring list with 118 points. “We knew coming into this year we’d have a good team again. Everyone wanted to be a part of it, and we knew we were going to get back to state.” The Wildcats were third in the 2011 Class AA tournament and went into this year’s tourney with a 24-3-1 record, the best in school history. But their bid for a state championship was denied by Moorhead goalie Michael Bitzer in the first round. Bitzer stopped all 34 Eagan shots in the Spuds’ 4-0 quarterfinal victory March 8. Bitzer, a finalist for the state’s senior goalie of the year award, was good (stoning Nick Kuchera on a breakaway in the second period) and fortunate (Merchant

Lightning, Eagles will do it again Section boys basketball title game is Friday BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Eastview’s and Apple Valley’s first two boys basketball games this season were such box-office successes – resulting in packed houses at both schools’ gyms – that they’re going to do it again. This time, it’s at a neutral site (Burnsville High School) and with even more at stake (the Class 4A, Section 3 championship). Tip-off is 7 p.m. Friday, March 16. “Apple Valley has an unguardable kid,” Eastview coach Mark Gerber said, referring to Eagles sophomore Tyus Jones. “But it’s really hard to key on him because he makes everyone else better.” Jones scored 39 and 45 points in two games against Eastview during the regular season. But the Lightning came away with the victory both times, 91-84 on Jan. 13 and 85-75 on Feb. 14. “Eastview is a very difficult team to defend against,” said Apple Valley coach Zach Goring. “You’ve got to know personnel at all times, like which kids shoot the three[-pointer] and which ones don’t.” The Lightning and Eagles won section semifinal games March 10 at Burnsville High. Eastview (27-1), ranked third in Class 3A, used strong three-point shooting to rout Eagan 6243 in the first half of the doubleheader. Cretin-Derham Hall also tried to use perimeter shooting to keep up with fast-breaking Apple Valley, but the Eagles prevailed 87-76 in a physical game. Darin Haugh made six three-pointers and Joey King three in Eastview’s

Wildcats FROM PREVIOUS PAGE beat Eagan 4-1. “Five-on-five, we played Duluth East dead even,” Taylor said. “But we didn’t have enough time to prepare for the best power play I’ve ever seen in high school hockey. There’s a reason they score almost 50 percent of the time.” Eagan’s 1-2 record at state notwith-

victory. Haugh scored 21 points and King had 19. “We played Eagan twice and know what they do defensively,” Gerber said. “Darin and Joey were going to be open in certain spots. We tried to get them to those spots, and they hit the shots.” Senior guard Nick Sabatke scored 16 points to lead Eagan, which finished 15-13. Jones had 33 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in fifth-ranked Apple Valley’s victory over 10th-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall. Junior guard Dustin Fronk scored 29 points and made all six of Apple Valley’s threepoint baskets. The Eagles made 69 percent of their shots as opposed to CretinDerham’s 45 percent. The Raiders took 36 three-point shots, making 12. “We were also plus-8 on the board, which is big for us with our [lack of] size,” Goring said. “With as many three-point shots as they took, there are going to be a lot of long rebounds.” Dennis Austin had seven rebounds for Apple Valley, with Mitch Hechsel and Jones grabbing six each. Fronk scored 13 of Apple Valley’s first 22 points as the Eagles raced to a 22-12 lead with 10 minutes, 53 seconds left in the first half. Apple Valley held the lead the rest of the way except for a brief time in the second half when Cretin-Derham tied the game 51-51. Now the Eagles will try to change their luck against Eastview. Gerber, the Lightning coach, said he expects each team to try to roll out a few surprises for the other. But with the teams so familiar with each other, there are few secrets. “When you get to the section playoffs, so much depends on hustle plays, like 50-50 balls and rebounding,” Gerber said. “It’s not so much about X’s and O’s, it’s about the kids’ effort.”

standing, Derick Kuchera said he didn’t believe the Wildcats played poorly. “I don’t mean to sound cocky, but I thought we took it to teams most of the time,” he said. “But we didn’t get the bounces, and we didn’t put the puck in the net.” If there’s any consolation for the Wildcats not finishing their season the way they wanted, it’s that it took a quality team to beat them. Their five losses were to Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Burnsville, Moorhead and Duluth East.

Upset for the ages After Lakeville South defeated No. 1ranked and heavily favored Duluth East 32 in the Class AA quarterfinals March 8, discussion naturally turned to other state tournament upsets. Was Lakeville South’s the biggest of them all? Another possibility for all-time biggest state tournament upset happened in the 1983 one-class quarterfinals. A Columbia Heights team led by a goalie with the unlikely name of Reggie Miracle knocked off Edina, Minnesota’s high school hockey superpower, 2-0. Columbia Heights’ mojo didn’t extend to the semifinals; the Hylanders lost to Burnsville 5-2. Burnsville lost to HillMurray 4-3 in the championship game. Columbia Heights no longer has its own high school boys hockey program. It is part of a multi-school cooperative called the North Metro Stars.

The Irish finished 11-16. • Burnsville closed a 1-25 season with a 71-30 loss to Eden Prairie in the Class 4A, Section 2 quarterfinals. The Blaze’s victory this season was 46-43 over Bloomington Jefferson on Feb. 14.

Of that group, Moorhead and Duluth East were in the state tournament, Minnetonka and Burnsville reached section championship games, and Eden Prairie was the 2011 Class AA champion. Now Eagan can claim status as an elite program, something Taylor said his seniors helped make happen. “They have talent. That’s obvious. But they also bought into the system,” Taylor said. “There were no prima donnas, no superstars, and they held each other accountable.”

One of the most daring experiments in Minnesota high school athletics debuted 20 years ago when the boys hockey tournament expanded to two classes. State government approved a law requiring the Minnesota State High School League to expand the hockey tournament. But instead an enrollment-based system, the MSHSL in the 1991-92 season introduced a format similar to what is used in college basketball. A ranking system identified 64 teams that would play for the Tier I championship. The remaining teams would play in Tier II, the equivalent of the National Invitation Tournament in college basketball. Reaching the Tier II championship game were Rosemount, which won one game in the regular season, and Greenway, which all but openly mocked the format even as it played in the state tournament. Greenway won 6-1. Rosemount took its lumps in the rugged Lake Conference, but the experience prepared the Irish for playoff games against less-powerful programs. Rosemount won five consecutive postseason games before Greenway ended its run. Frank Senta, head coach of the Rosemount team, is still active in local high school hockey as an assistant coach with the Burnsville boys. Eveleth-Gilbert won the 1993 Tier II championship. But by then the two-tier format had met with widespread disapproval and the MSHSL changed to the enrollment-based classifications that remain in use today.

Lightning quiets talk of rebuilding Eastview girls on 18-1 run going into state basketball tournament BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS For the first time in a long time, people were using the “R” word around the Eastview girls basketball program. “R,” as in, “rebuilding.” That didn’t come from within the Lightning’s team, but from the outside. “We had a lot of students saying, ‘Oh, you lost a lot of your best players [from last season], so you must be rebuilding for next year,’” senior guard Paige Palkovich said. But as the season progressed, it became clear the Lightning didn’t have to adopt “Wait ’til Next Year” as its slogan. Eastview was 6-4 on Jan. 1. The Lightning then won 18 of its next 19

games, taking it through a 52-47 victory over Park of Cottage Grove in the Class 4A, Section 3 championship game March 8 at Hamline University. “As a team, we’re pretty solid,” senior forward Amber Mehr said. “Maddy [ninth-grader Madison Guebert] is a great point guard. We’ve had a lot of players contributing this season, so we have good balance. And we know when we’re on defense, we have to play tough.” Eastview (24-5) will try to maintain that formula through the state Class 4A tournament. The Lightning played St. Michael-Albertville (22-7) in a quarterfinal game March 14, with the winner facing No. 1 seed and defending state champion Hopkins (28-1) or unseeded Lakeville North (21-8) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Target Center. Eastview had to survive a furious rally by Park to qualify for the state tournament for the first time in three years. Eastview scored the first 13 points of the game and held a 37-23 lead with

less than 12 minutes remaining. Park then went on a 22-4 run over the next six minutes that turned a 14-point deficit into a 45-41 lead. The Lightning regained control and held the Wolfpack to two points the rest of the game. “The nice thing about these kids is they are composed,” coach Melissa Guebert said. “We didn’t think this was going to be easy. We’ve been in enough tough games to know that. Teams can come back quickly, especially with the three-point shot.” Madison Guebert’s steal and basket with 2:31 remaining put Eastview back in front, 48-47. Meghan Ryan made a key steal with Eastview still holding its onepoint lead. Park was forced to foul Mehr, who made two free throws to make it 50-47. Park launched three three-point attempts in the final 22 seconds, although none came particularly close to going through. Ryan made two more free throws with one second remaining to seal the Lightning’s vic-

A&J Painting is a family owned and operated business. A&J Painting is a family owned and operated business that was started 15 years ago with my sons Andrew, Jeremiah, and David. In today’s economic climate we have maintained a healthy business due to our professional approach and work ethic that carries the highest standards of quality for every job. We have thrived over the years because of the volume of callbacks and customer referrals from previously contracted jobs. No contract is too big or too small for our company. A&J Painting operates as a licensed and insured painting company that offers trained and skilled (journeyman) employee’s to paint and remodel your home or business. All of our employee’s have been with the company for several years and each has been trained to the highest standards. We take pride in the honesty, integrity, and character of the young men we have employed. My son Andrew is a highly skilled and trained carpenter. He also does taping, knock down ceilings, tiling, countertops and offers many types of custom carpentry. Andrew operates a professional spray booth off site for finishes on cabinetry and furniture. His current focus is on remodeling, updating, and modernizing homes and businesses. Andrew’s

perfectionist approach to every job and the extent of his skill set have made him one of the best craftsman in the Twin Cities. My other two sons run the painting end of the business and are also professionally trained Artists. Jeremiah attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and later studied under the mentorship of the nationally renowned portrait and fresco painter Mark Balma. David similarly was accepted into a full time master apprenticeship program at the young age of 16 at the highly respected Atelier Lack Studio. They followed in the family tradition of mastering a professional craft and skill which they have brought to our company. Between the two they offer 25 years of experience painting interior and exterior homes in the metro area with our family business. A&J Painting takes great pride in our ability to make a true and lasting impression on you. I can’t tell you how many letters and calls I have received over the years from customers who just wanted to share with me what a great job we did. We hope to have the opportunity to do so with you as well. We are only a call or e-mail away to offer you a free estimate of our professional services.

tory. “That was hard,” Palkovich said. “But I thought we did a really good job of playing as a team. We kept our poise, we stayed calm with the ball and we hit some big shots.” Madison Guebert, the Lightning’s leading scorer, had 20 points in the section final. Ryan added 14 points and Mehr scored 11. Melissa Guebert, the Lightning’s first-year head coach, said the players became better at understanding and executing their roles during the streak of 18 victories in 19 games. She also got a glimpse of her team’s resolve in December when, three days after a 42-point loss to No. 1-ranked Hopkins, the Lightning came within a missed three-pointer at the buzzer of taking then-fifthranked Bloomington Kennedy to overtime. “I think that’s when we realized we were good players, too,” Mehr said. And the talk of this being a rebuilding year for the Lightning soon died down.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.

2 FREE TICKETS to Million Dollar Quartet Million Dollar Quartet is the smash hit Broadway musical, inspired by the true story of the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. On December 4, 1956, these four young musicians were gathered together by Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions of all time.
