All in the family for former Apple Valley resident Soap opera star races in Twin Cities Marathon to raise money for mental illness organization BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Former Apple Valley resident Brianna Brown has plenty to live up to. On Oct. 1 and 2, Brown and 10 other friends and family members ran or walked in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon to raise funds for the Dakota County branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Twenty-seven years ago, her grandparents Jean and Tom Brown co-founded NAMI-Dakota County after their daughter Jeanne was diagnosed with schizophrenia her junior year in college. “The whole purpose is really fundraising and creating awareness for people living in Dakota County for people to support our emergency fund for basic necessities for those in Dakota County with mental illness,” said Janice Brown, Brianna’s aunt and former NAMI-Dakota president. Since 1984, NAMI-Dakota County has had an “emergency fund” it uses to pay for basic needs of those suffering from mental illness. The funds go towards preventing them from Brianna Brown becoming homeless and also provide them with food, clothing, winter coats, and resources to help with housing issues. NAMI-Dakota County also has support groups for those with mental illness and their friends and relatives. NAMI-Dakota County relies solely on donations from its supporters, as well as money it can raise during its MARATON: TO PAGE 14

Country Tour,” which recognized Black Hawk and the District 196 food service teams for their work in bringing healthier meals to the lunchroom. Black Hawk was one of four schools nationwide to host the event, which made stops in Washington D.C., Oklahoma City and Sacramento, CA. Janeen Peterson, president-elect for the Minnesota School Nutrition Association and a registered dietitian for District 196, said a middle school was intentionally selected to host the event. “A middle school was chosen because this is the age where kids make those life-long eating habits,” Peterson said. “Mom and dad can’t tell them what to eat.” Event sponsor Schwan’s Food Service made a $2,000 donation to Black Hawk for its efforts in gradually transforming its school lunch options. Schwan’s Food Service President Jim Clough presented the donation to the school. “It’s a big honor,” Peterson said. “They’ve been big supporters.” Peterson said the school plans to use the donation to promote healthier eating with its students. The school will likely buy an ice machine that can display fresh fruit smoothies for the students to enjoy. “We’ve got the money,” Peterson said. “We’ve just got to go shopping.” Changes in Black Hawk’s lunches include a farm-to-school promotion every month that features local produce. Seventy-five percent of bread and starch items are now whole grain, which includes brown rice, pizza crust, tortillas, hot dog and hamburger buns. Also, the school offers more fresh fruit and vegetables – at least five choices of fruit and at least two choices of vegetables every day. The school has made efforts to reduce sodium and offers new beverages, all of which are now 100 percent fruit juice, milk and
water. “They key to school lunch is that school kids still want to eat it,” said Carol Willenbring with Schwan’s Food Service. “Taste rules, but kids still have to want to eat it.” Cindy Landgrebe, food service manager at Black Hawk and Deerwood Elementary School, spoke to students at the event about the importance of eating a healthy lunch. “It’s critical that the food they eat is good for them and it’s also fun,” Landgrebe said, adding that desserts are now served without much of the refined sugar in past treats. “Today we’re serving brownies, but they’re made with black beans.” Landgrebe said the students have been receptive to the change in lunch meal options. “It’s a learning time, too,” she said. “We encourage them and get them to try new things. And, they’re amazed that they like them. They’re open to trying new things.” Making a special appearance at the all-school rally was Lorenzo Booker, kickoff return specialist for the Minnesota Vikings. “He was fantastic,” Landgrebe said. “He went to school in California and shared how his middle school lunches didn’t have many choices. He was really impressed with the offerings we had.” “He had an incredible message about you’ve got to treat your body right to achieve both in school, after school, and in their life,” Willenbring said. “It was just a very positive message about eating healthy to achieve. Good eating can lead to success.” In the future, Willenbring said Schwan’s will work with the school food service program and inform the parents school lunches are more nutritious than ever. “We think that there are opportunities for us to help the food service, connect with parents through parent organizations and parent-teacher conference nights so the parents can feel confident their kids are getting a healthy school lunch.”

Customer service these days is ‘abominable’ We all have been there – holding on a telephone line for 10 to 15 minutes or more, only to end up at the beginning of an electronic labyrinth in our attempt to navigate through an intricate maze of electronic customer service commands. Either we are typing in the numbers, or we embarrassingly end up speaking to a machine. But how many of us actually follow through and get the results we want as customers? I am perhaps not the best gauge to use for such a question as I have and will continue to insist that these customer service associates do their jobs, even if it means documenting times, names, other information, and of course asking for supervisors. After all, isn’t that what they are there for? The quick answer would be a definite yes if you were to ask anyone representing the industry, if you’re lucky enough to get them on the phone, or any customer who has had to endure the utter frustration associated with what serves as customer service in the 21st Century.
MICHAEL RICCI Burnsville/Lakeville Community Editor
These customer service associates may say they want to help, but I find this to be disingenuous when they would seemingly much rather refer you, the caller who held on long enough to actually speak to a human, to their respective company or organization’s website. Similar to the unending telephone maze we have to run through like mice, these websites are often equally or more confusing or do not contain the information we were looking for to begin with. Actually it could be a combination of two or more reasons depending on your call. If misery does in fact love company, then you are not alone. According to a Consumer Reports article published in July 2011, the author cleverly starts the article with, “Need help? Good luck.”
The article, which focused on a nationwide survey conducted the 12 months prior to publication, found that twothirds of customers did not have the patience or tenacity to go the distance either on the telephone or even in person. The article acknowledged the frustrations most of us feel when dealing with customer service departments. “Sixty-four percent of respondents said that during the previous 12 months, they had left a store because service was poor, and 67 percent had hung up on customer service without having their problem addressed,” the article read. The article also acknowledged a particular level of high frustration. “Seventy-one percent of survey respondents were ‘tremendously annoyed’ when they couldn’t reach a human on the phone; 65 percent felt that way about rude sales people,” the article read. “And 56 percent felt that way about having to take multiple phone steps to reach the right place.” The Better Business
Bureau, according to the article, received 1.1 million complaints against North American businesses in 2010, which was up 10 percent from the number of calls received in 2009. This list could go on and on, but the issue seems to have caught the attention of two major companies that I know of due to TV commercials. Both, one a bank and the other an insurance company I believe, are capitalizing on this poor but yet accepted industry standard by appealing to the frustrations many of us share. Until the market catches up to this and more companies, and organizations, actually provide high quality customer service, what can we do? Actually, there are some minor actions we can take to try and get the results we desire, according to the Consumer Reports article. According to the article, we should keep records to reconcile a grievance. The reason for this, of course, is to repeat all of the calls, who you spoke CUSTOMER SERVICE: TO NEXT PAGE
“Voir Dire” and the importance of jury duty Much of the work done in Minnesota district courts involves criminal complaints. The most important decisions in many criminal matters are made by juries, not judges. Article VI of both the United States and Minnesota Constitutions gives people the right to a jury trial in most criminal and civil matters. Fortunately, the jury system is a real strength in the court’s goal of achieving justice. In 2010 in Minnesota, over 94,000 people were summoned for jury duty. In excess of 58,000 people ended up sitting as jurors.
MICHAEL BAXTER First Judicial District Judge
As a judge, I give jurors the opportunity to meet with me after a trial is complete. Juries almost always want to meet with the judge. The jurors, first of all, want to know if I believe they “got it right.” The decisions of juries are right if they followed the rules and the law given to them by the judge, which is
almost always the case. My experience is that juries do usually “get it right,” and are generally attentive and perceptive. One question jurors often have concerns the questioning prospective jurors go through, which is called “voir dire”. Voir dire means “to speak the truth” in French. It is, more importantly, the process used by lawyers and judges to obtain information about prospective jurors. Judges are most interested in confirming that there is no reason a juror cannot fairly serve on the case. Since this questioning is
often a concern of jurors, it may be helpful to learn about it in advance of being summoned for jury duty. We will look at the purpose for voir dire, the role of jurors, the process of selection, and the role of the judge and attorneys. Purpose: The purpose is, first and foremost, to discover any bias or prejudice that would prevent a person from serving as a juror. Jurors need not be free of opinions or ignorant of JURY DUTY: TO PAGE 12

Customer service FROM PREVIOUS PAGE with, the time and the subject matter. This step may not be the “money step,” but it certainly serves to convey the lack of attention and concern, which can develop into a series of three or more calls. In other words, you will likely get a superior to speak with. Also among the list of steps is making your pitch in person. Obviously this is hardly practical, especially if the business you’re dealing with is located in Texas, but if the opportunity presents itself, it may be effective. “On the phone, we use only 45 percent of the communication tools we use in person,” customer service expert Emily Yellin said in the article. “The opportunity for things to go awry increases when you’re not face-toface.” I agree with every word, but again this is not practical for most situations, but it may just work for your local cable company. Imagine how different that customer service associate – the one who you felt was rude – would conduct himself or herself if you were face-to-face. The list also includes a paragraph
under the title “Bypass automated phone menus,” but the suggestion to do this seems to provide more difficulty than it is worth. Apparently you can enter a phone number with one of a few services, and the service contacts you when the customer service representative is on the line. How many hours of work would I need to miss for this? The two I believe work the best when used together are taking the matter to the next level and persistence, along with the aforementioned record of previous conversations. In my personal experience this has been the most fruitful, but to think that any situation would have to come to such an extreme is frustrating by itself. In the Consumer Reports article, an individual named Jack Abelson, who was identified as a retail industry consultant, said it well when he described the state of customer service in the U.S. as “abominable.” He went on to say it best, “There is an almost complete failure to recognize and appreciate the value people can bring to the equation.” Anyone in a position to influence a company’s customer service department ought to heed these indicators, but I find that highly unlikely, at least until something is posing as an imminent threat to a company’s bottom line.

The National Forensics League, the debate and speech honor society, has released its annual list of the largest debate and speech programs in the country. Eastview High School, led by coach Todd Hering, ranks 14th out of more 3,000 schools nationwide. The National Forensics League ranks programs by counting the number of students involved and by tracking the success of those students. Eastview High School ranks highly because it has large debate and speech programs and its students are competitively successful. In June 2011, Eastview was named a National School of Excellence in Speech and Debate at the NFL tournament in Dallas. At the tournament, Eastview had a school-record thirteen students advance to elimination rounds. Currently, the Eastview speech team has roughly 90 members and the debate team has 100.
www.northern-orthodontics.com
In comparison, other large metro schools often have less than 30 team members and some comparable high schools do not even offer debate and/or speech. Eastview’s National Forensics League chapter ranks in the top 0.1 percent nationwide. Info: 952-431-8907
Rhan Elementary students and staff bond over tie-dye shirts Students and staff members at Rahn Elementary School of Arts and Technology, 4424 Sandstone Dr. Eagan, spent part of Sept. 27 creating some wearable art, tie-dye T-shirts, as a way to build community and celebrate the arts theme of the new magnet school. Volunteers from Office Max and parents were on hand, and older students paired with younger students to help them create their shirts. Students and staff will wear their shirts at monthly “Character Counts” school assemblies and on other days to promote school spirit.

Jury duty FROM PAGE 6 facts, but they must be able to set aside those opinions and render a verdict based solely upon the evidence presented at the trial. If a person cannot do that, they must be excused from serving as a juror. Another purpose is to give attorneys information in order to exercise their preemptory challenges. All parties in a case are allowed to excuse a limited number of prospective jurors without cause. This is known as a preemptory challenge and typically involves prospective jurors the attorneys or parties believe will not be favorable to their case. Process: Depending on the type of case or local practice, prospective jurors may be questioned in a group or individually. Generally, the judge asks questions at the beginning. Then each attorney (in Minnesota, beginning with the defense) may ask questions. After the questioning is complete and the judge has ruled on any challenges for cause, the peremptory challenges are exercised by the attorneys and the jury is “empaneled.” Roles of Attorneys and Judges: The role of attorneys in voir dire is to obtain information from the prospective jurors, not give information about their client’s case. The judge’s role is to assure the fairness of the process, to enforce the rules, and to decide any challenges for cause. Juror’s Role: During the voir dire process, jurors must give answers that are honest and complete. They are required to answer questions that may be personal, pri-
vate and even embarrassing to some. The type of case will often determine the nature of the questions. For example, in a case of criminal sexual misconduct, questions about sexual abuse suffered by a juror could be asked. If a prospective juror is uncomfortable answering a question in open court, there is a safeguard in place. Prospective jurors may request to answer questions in private, meaning that only the judge, attorneys, parties and court reporter would be present. It is the judge’s role to make sure that attorneys are not asking questions other than those meant to obtain meaningful information, and that prospective jurors are not required to answer unrelated questions. For example, it would likely be inappropriate for an attorney to ask a prospective juror about their personal marriage relationship in a trial case about a burglary. Finally, jurors are best served by asking for clarification for any vague or confusing questions. Attorneys (and judges) often slip into “legalese,” making questions hard to understand or answer honestly. Conclusion: Jury service is at the heart of an effective justice system. While voir dire can sometimes be boring and repetitious, jurors can help by being honest and open in their answers, and by paying attention to the instructions given. Voir dire is the first critical stage of a trial, and an important stage for all involved. We thank you for your service as jurors, past or future. Judges and court personnel strive to make jury service a rewarding experience. Michael Baxter is a judge in the First Judicial District chambered in Le Center.

Marathon
“With the publicity and whatnot that I’ve received from that role, I felt that I could make a bigger difference and help support my family on a bigger level,’ Brown said. Janice Brown, who helped raise $11,000 for NAMI-Dakota County at the 1996 Twin Cities Marathon, is thankful for Brianna’s efforts for this year’s marathon fundraiser. “I’m very proud of my niece for stepping up to the plate and helping us,” Janice said. Brianna has run half marathons in the past, but never a full-length race. She said her goal is to take first place in the Twin Cities Marathon, but quickly backed off that prediction. “I just want to finish it,” she said with a laugh. The race also coincides with a milestone for Brown – her 32nd birthday. “I’m really excited to celebrate my 21st birthday for the eleventh time,” she said. Brianna said she is honored to help raise money for mental illness, but also sees this as an opportunity to thank her grandparents and Aunt Janice for their years of work with NAMI-Dakota County. “It means more than I can eloquently express in words,” Brianna said. “Not only do I feel like it’s perfect timing to honor what they’ve done for our family and how selfless they’ve been for the last 27 years. And, to honor my aunt who’s given years helping out and to give love and support to her.”

fundraisers. That’s where Brianna Brown comes in. Brown, a Hollywood actress best known for her role as Dr. Lisa Niles on the soap opera “General Hospital,” organized a team of runners to compete in the Twin Cities Marathon to raise money for NAMIDakota County. “It was Brianna’s brilliant idea to say, ‘Let’s continue the [family] legacy,’” said Janice Brown. “For the race fund, we’re trying to raise $10,000. It’s really cool. We’re very excited.” “I decided to come back home to run it and raise money for the organization to help out my grandparents and my family and other who are suffering from this illness,” Brianna said. Brianna’s grandparents have been actively involved with NAMI-Dakota County until very recently, she said. “My grandparents realized that there just wasn’t enough help for people with mental illness,” Brianna said of the organization’s formation. “And, it was so taboo that people were suffering from mental illness and there was so little help back then. That’s what made them step up and create an affiliate branch in Dakota County.” Brianna hopes the attention her character has garnered – the “love to hate” villain Dr. Lisa Niles on General Hospital – will increase the amount of money her group can raise.

Dakota County cities honor National Fire Prevention Week Week designated to commemorate Great Chicago Fire of 1871 BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Apple Valley, Eagan and Rosemount fire departments will each conduct their own open houses and as part of National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 915. But, these three cities will have something in common – to educate the public on preventing fires and sharing ways to keep each other safe in the event of a fire.
Apple Valley As part of National Fire Prevention Week, the Apple Valley Fire Department will visit every school in the city. At the schools, firefighters will talk about fire equipment, fire safety, fire hazards in the house, candle safety, fire extinguisher safety and evacuation, said Apple Valley Fire Marshall Roy Kingsley. Kindergarteners, 2nd and 4th graders will be able to tour the fire trucks at the schools. On Thursday, Oct. 13, all middle schools and high schools will have scheduled fire
drills. Also during the week, the fire department will host three open houses at its fire stations. The first open house is 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Fire Station 1, 15000 Hayes Road; the second is 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Fire Station 2, 13995 Galaxie Ave. and the third is 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at Fire Station 3, 14195 Essex Ave. This year’s theme is “Protect Your Family from Fire.” Specifically, the Apple Valley Fire Dept. will concentrate on staying protected from the potential dangers that arise from cooking fires. “We all multi task,” said Kingsley. “The biggest thing is to have people slow down and concentrate on their cooking. That’s our biggest topic this year.” At Fire Stations 2 and 3, the fire department will provide an escape trailer for the general public to simulate escape routes in the event of a fire. Additionally, open house participants can take part in a fire extinguisher demonstration. The Apple Valley Police Dept. will display a squad car for public perusal and an ambulance will be on hand for those interested in learning more about the life-savFIRE WEEK: TO PAGE 18
The new Eagan Fire Safety Center, shown here at its June 2011 Grand Opening, will now host the fire department’s National Fire Prevention Week’s Open Houses. The open houses were previously hosted at the Eagan Civic Arena and Cascade Bay parking lot. (Submitted photo)

It has been incredibly received and it’s been a lot of fun.” The Flamingo fundraiser program works requires the cooperation of Eastview community members. If a home gets “flamingoed,” that household has three options. One, that home can choose to forward the flamingos to someone else within the Eastview Community Area for a tax deductible donation in any amount. Secondly, that household can do nothing and the foundation will remove the flamingos within 24 hours. Lastly, a household who wants nothing to do with the flamingos can call the foundation and have the birds removed immediately. Flamingos FROM PREVIOUS PAGE only once has someone called to have the birds removed right away from their yard. “One time, they had a house showing, but they still gave a donation,” she said. Mathieson said the biggest flamingo donation the foundation has received was $300, but most homes donate $25. Each foundation board member is in charge of three flamingo flocks for three days in a row. That person will pick up all three flocks and donation money from “flamingoed” houses starting at 4:30 p.m. Then, once it is dark out, the board members will place the flamingos in the yards the previous “flamingoed” homes chose. “I have not been caught, but others have,” Mathieson said. On Sept. 27, Mathieson drove to three houses and picked up the flocks she placed the night before. The first house on her route was in the Cedar Isles neighborhood in Apple Valley. Pooja Dutt, 10th grade student at Eastview High School, was not at home when her yard was “flamingoed” Sept. 26. “We actually drove into the driveway and that’s when they saw [the flamingos],” Pooja said, referring to her parents. But, seeing the pink birds in her yard did not come as a surprise to Pooja. “I told my friend to do it,” she said. When her parents asked her about the flamingos, Pooja played the fool. “Oh, how did that happen?” she said. Last year, the foundation raised $4,700 through the flamingo program and this year it hopes to reach $5,000 by Oct. 7, the last day the flamingoes will be spotted in the community. The flamingo program proceeds were part of the $20,194.20 in grants and $45,000 in scholarship funds the foundation awarded to the Eastview district schools in 2011.
“We get fabulous support from all the schools that feed up into Eastview and the School of Environmental Studies,” Mathieson said. One student who received a 2011 Eastview Community Foundation scholarship was former Eastview High School student Courtney Andresen, now a freshman at St. Thomas University majoring in business marketing. Her first encounter with the flamingos occurred last year. “I actually saw one of my friends’ yards get ‘flamingoed.’” Andresen said. “I was just wondering what it was and then I found out it was for the Eastview program.” Andresen, who won the $500 Jerry Kistner Memorial DECA scholarship, said the school matched the award amount through the Dollars for Scholars program. “It meant a lot that it was the DECA scholarship,” Andresen said. Mary Hoffman, 7th grade math teacher at Falcon Ridge Middle School, was awarded a $2,665 SMART Personal Response System in the Math Classroom grant in May 2011. This system allows students to interact with a Smartboard by using handheld wireless remotes. It fosters a higher level of classroom participation, Hoffman said. “As I’m teaching math, I can put questions on the smart board and the students can enter their answers and get immediate feedback whether or not they’re understanding the material,” Hoffman said. “In this case, with these, everybody is participating because everyone has their own device. It really engages the students with their learning.” Hoffman said she was overwhelmed and exited to have received the grant from the Eastview Community Foundation. “It’s centered towards the students,” Hoffman said of the foundation’s efforts. “The money that they raise is phenomenal and the things they’ve done for our community is amazing.” The foundation hosts other fundraisers throughout the year, the most notable of which is the Art Madness event Nov. 5 at the Spirit of

Fire week FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Like Apple Valley, the Rosemount Fire Dept. will have a presence in the through the city schools. “For the week, we do make visits to all the public and some private schools,” Norsten said. “We typically tailor our safety message and it’s providing them a safety message pertaining not just to fire-related injuries, but also airbag safety and bike helmet safety. This year [the students] will have an escape plan to go home, talk to parents who can facilitate those escape plans and ask questions like, ‘What do I do? Where do we meet?’” Norsten has seen the impact the open houses and school visits have on kids and students. “The best part about it is you’ll run into [students] that have been through the schools at Cub Foods – whether they’re six or 12 – they’ll say, ‘Hey, you’re firefighter Andy. I remember you told me to stop, drop and roll,’” Norsten said. “Things like that are what sticks out and we know they’re getting the right message.” The fire department will receive a damaged car donated by AAA that it will use for a vehicle extrication demonstration. The fire dept. bagpipe band – a 100-year old tradition – will perform at the open house, Norsten said. The open house will benefit both the public and fire department, Norsten said. “The Fire Prevention Week is a great opportunity, in my mind, for the citizens and fire department to get out and meet each other and get a new message out,” he said. “It’s an outstanding event, not only for the fire department to get our message out, but also for the citizens to learn about fire safety.”
COOKING FIRES FACTS & FIGURES • Cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Sixty-six percent of home cooking fire started with the ignition of food or other cooking materials. • Cooking equipment fires are the leading cause of home structure fires and associated civilian injuries. These fires accounted for 40 percent of all reported home structure fires and 36% of home civilian injuries. • Cooking equipment was involved in two of every five reported home fires. Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in these fires. • Ranges accounted for the largest share – 59 percent – of home cooking fire incidents. Ovens accounted for 16 percent. • Frying poses the greatest risk of fire.

Chiropractic care offers health care options Patients often seeking help with headaches, pain issues BY ROXI REJALI – CONTRIBUTING WRITER Judy Neudecker has found a fail-safe way to stop her excruciating headaches. She makes an appointment with her chiropractor. Plagued by severe headaches that strike every few weeks, her symptoms include upset stomach and extreme light sensitivity. She’s tried all types of pain relievers, but gets no relief. Spinal adjustment is what works for Neudecker. During the treatment, chiropractors use their hands to apply controlled force to the neck or spine. “I go in for an adjustment, tell them I’m having headaches,” said Neudecker, 43, of Rosemount. “They can put their finger right on the back of my neck, right where I feel the pain and adjust it and I‘m better, instantly.” Neudecker goes to conventional doctors and clinics for annual physical exams, mammograms and cholesterol
testing, but regularly visits Marty Chiropractic Clinic in Burnsville to treat her aches and pains. “For me, I don’t want to take pain medication and muscle relaxers because I fully understand that muscle (stimulation), massage and chiropractic can take care of it naturally and not be a mask to the pain,” she said. Neudecker is one of the growing number of Americans who use some type of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), which includes chiropractic care, acupuncture, meditation and herbal supplements. The 2007 National Health Interview Survey found that 38 percent of American adults and nearly 12 percent of children have used the treatments, which are not generally considered to be part of conventional Western medicine. The survey by the National Institutes of Health also found that consumers spent an estimated $33.9 billion out-of-pocket per year on CAM treatments. Chiropractors offer drug-free, nonsurgical treatments that focus on the correct alignment of the spine and proper functioning of the nervous sys-

tem. Treatments include spinal adjustment, massage and electrical muscle stimulation. In Minnesota, licensed chiropractors must complete an accredited program that includes coursework in anatomy, physiology and chemistry. Most patients come to Marty Chiropractic with headache, back pain or neck pain or problems with their shoulders, wrists or knees, said Dr. Christine Lynch, a chiropractor at the clinic. Some common problems are sciatica or whiplash from car accidents. When appropriate, chiropractors will refer patients to other medical professionals who can provide additional testing and treatment, said Dr. Kari McDonald, a chiropractor at the clinic. During treatment, practitioners also talk to patients about diet, exercise and stress reduction, McDonald said. “We’re trying to get their whole body to a better state of health, wellness,” she said. Clinical research on the effectiveness of chiropractic treatments for low back pain, neck pain and headache helps improve patient care and boosts credibility of the field among medical professionals, said Renee DeVries, College of Chiropractic dean at Northwestern
Health Sciences University in Bloomington. Over the past decade, the school has received more than $20 million in federal funding to investigate non-surgical treatments for back and neck conditions, she said. Chiropractic’s emphasis on a drugfree, natural approach to health care appeals to consumers who worry about the cost and side effects of medications, said Jennifer Naas, Minnesota Chiropractic Association president. “I think the public is becoming much more engaged in doing their own research about different options and trying things out to find out to see what works best for them,” she said. Some patients visit a chiropractor out of desperation, Naas said. In a common scenario, patients injured in auto accidents are searching for relief from the pain of damaged joints, ligament and muscles, she said. “The biggest thing is that they didn’t get help somewhere else,” she said. “Most people show up at a chiropractic office because they’ve tried everything else and it didn’t work.”

Dispelling Chiropractic Myths: Dr. George Franz (the back whisperer) will try to shed some light on this subject. Myth #1 I’m afraid you’re going to break my neck or hurt me. FACT: We are well educated and experienced in understanding the exact amount of amplitude and velocity needed to align the vertebrae in order to correct and/or prevent physical discomfort. These treatments cause very little to no discomfort for the patient.
Myth #2 You’re not a real doctor. FACT: Both D.C.’s and M.D.’s must pass a rigorous state and national board exam to attain licensure to practice. On average, Doctors of Chiropractic care are required to take more than 200 total curriculum hours than that of a M.D. In order to stay current with the latest research and philosophy, D.C.’s take 40+ hrs. of continuing education biannually to give our patients the very best care.
Myth #3 My back feels fine. I don’t need a Chiropractor. FACT: You do not need to be feeling pain to reap the overall health benefits of chiropractic work. Consider this, we don’t usually know we have a
cavity until it hurts, do we? But it is still good for us to go to the dentists for regular checkups because we know cleanings will ensure proper gum, bone and tooth health. In the same way, we don’t always know there is a problem with a joint that is becoming degenerative because of improper alignment or nerve irritation. Our bodies actually produce chemicals that mask this condition and so we do not always realize the problem on our own until much later.
Myth #4 All you fix is the spine. FACT: As Doctors of Chiropractic care our education enables us to realign any joint in the body – shoulders, elbows, hands and feet. You name it we can help. We also use modalities, such as, EMS, Ultrasound and advanced stretching techniques that deliver physical therapy as well. In addition, chiropractors focus on total well-being of the body, including corrective exercises, lifestyle advice, nutritional counseling, massage therapy and spinal/postural screenings.

BIG VOLLEYBALL WEEKEND Three South Suburban Conference schools – Apple Valley, Burnsville and Lakeville North – will hold volleyball tournaments this weekend. Action at all three tournaments starts Friday, Oct. 7, and continues Saturday, Oct. 8. Visit us online at minnlocal.com Page 30
Eastview defense makes a stand
Top-ranked Eastview speeds toward section playoffs People now know about boys soccer team BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS
Lightning shuts out Apple Valley for fourth consecutive time
Eastview also scored on its opening possession when Ryan Reger threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Kenyon Phillips. Apple Valley was held to 31 yards on the ground, and most of its passing yardage came on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter. A 29-yard pass from Matt Thomas to Mitch Hechsel, followed by a 46-yard pass from Thomas to Derrius Thompson, moved the ball from the Apple Valley 22 to the Eastview 3. But three plays later the Eagles lost the ball and their last chance to score.
Eastview’s cover has been blown. After beginning the boys soccer season unranked, the Lightning has ascended to the top of the Class AA poll and is a legitimate contender for the state championship. The Lightning might have been an under-the-radar team in August, but now that it’s October, everybody involved in high school boys soccer knows who its players are and how they win. “The secret’s out about us and what we try to do offensively,” coach Scott Gustafson said. With the section playoffs beginning next week, the question is if Eastview can carry its high-pressure offensive style into the postseason. It worked well for the school across town when Apple Valley won the last two Class AA state championships. But once the playoffs start, South Suburban Conference leader Eastview can count on opponents playing more cautiously. Maybe that will play into the Lightning’s hands, Gustafson said. “Our focus is on playing the way we’re capable of playing and making other teams adapt to us,” he said. “If they stop us from doing what we want to do, then maybe we’ll have to make some changes.” Eastview has been able to do much of what it has wanted in a 13-0-1 start. Going into this week, the Lightning was one of only two undefeated teams in Class AA. North St. Paul also was 13-0-1. Expectations have been raised, and Eastview captain Brennan Espinda Banick said the players don’t have a problem with that.

BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS A week after allowing one player to gain 273 yards, Eastview held an entire team to 140. Upset with its performance in a Sept. 23 loss to Bloomington Kennedy, the Lightning returned to its home field and kept its collective foot on the accelerator, shutting out Apple Valley 17-0 on Sept. 30 in South Suburban Conference football. The shutout was sorely needed by a defense that had allowed 28 points or more in each of its first four games. The previous week, Kennedy running back Lexis Jones gained 273 yards and scored twice in a 31-24 victory at Eastview. Asked about defensive changes since that game, head coach Kelly Sherwin said, “nothing major, other than putting Zack [Johnson, a 305-pound offensive lineman] in there in certain situations. “We really just talked about going back to work. At this point, we’re not going to change what we do or how we do it. We just want to try to do it better.” The Lightning (2-3) earned its fourth consecutive shutout victory against crosstown rival Apple Valley. It’s not as if the Eagles (0-5) didn’t have chances. They had a pass dropped in the end zone in the second quarter. Late in the game, they moved the ball inside the Eastview 1-yard line. Johnson then made his presence felt in his part-time role on the defensive line. He blasted an Apple Valley running back, causing a fumble that the Lightning’s Brad

Senior LeAndre Kennedy gained 92 yards and had a 15-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Eric Krupke, another senior, rushed for 89 yards. “We were trying to run the ball and get good yardage on first down,” Johnson said. “We did that most of the game. Then in the third quarter, we ran nine minutes off the clock, and that was huge.” That third-quarter drive ended with a 28-yard field goal by Sam Fluegge.

Football FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “We did not come ready to play against Kennedy, but this game showed us we can have success if we work hard,” Johnson said. “We have three games left before the playoffs, and we have no doubt we can win them all.” Sherwin agreed, with one caveat. “We can beat any team we play, and we can lose to any of them,” he said. “That’s just the truth of the matter. A lot of games the rest of the way are going to come down to the fourth quarter, and we have to make the plays when we have the opportunity to do it.” Eastview’s next game is 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Burnsville, a team that took sixth-ranked Lakeville North to the wire before losing 17-14. Apple Valley tries for its first victory Friday at Rosemount, which has lost back-to-back games to Lakeville North and Lakeville South after starting 3-0.
Eagan 55, Jefferson 7 Eagan’s offense is rolling, and victories are following. Several school records fell in the Wildcats’ homecoming victory over
Soccer FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “We take a lot of pride in being ranked No. 1 in the state,” he said. “We knew we had good players and we’ve come together well.” Eastview was in a pressure situation when it played Apple Valley on Sept. 27. Although Apple Valley faced a massive rebuilding task after the back-to-back state titles, but the Eagles took a 9-2-1 record into the game. There also was the matter of Eastview being 0-for-forever against Apple Valley. In the boys soccer program’s first 14 years, the Lightning had never defeated the Eagles. That changed last week when Eastview won 3-0 on its home field. Pierce Erickson, Mathew Gweh and Zeadd Rashed scored. Joe Karam set up Erickson’s goal, and Sam Fluegge assisted on the other two. “Some of us already knew it,” Espinda Banick said, referring to Eastview’s previous futility against Apple Valley, “and then we let everyone else know. This definitely was a big game for us.” Also last week, Eastview defeated St. Michael-Albertville 3-1 and Hastings 5-0 in non-conference games.
Jefferson on Sept. 30. The 55 points are the most in a single game. The offense also set school records with 11.2 average yards per play and 10.9 average yards per rush. Kicker Colin Byers also tied a school single-game record with seven conversions. The teams were tied 7-7 in the first quarter before Eagan took control. Thirty-four second-quarter points for the Wildcats settled matters. Quarterback Drew Bauer rushed 12 times for 168 yards and four touchdowns. Three of his touchdown runs were 38 yards or more. Bauer also completed four of seven passes for 101 yards and two scores. Mack Nelson (62 yards) and Joey Weaver (12 yards) caught touchdown passes. Michael Busch also had a 34-yard touchdown run and Mitch Seidel scored on a 14-yard run. Mitch Johnson, Tommy Nowariak, Micah Hausman and Charles Schauer recovered Jefferson fumbles. Eagan (2-3) has scored 131 points in its last three games. The Wildcats will try to even their record when they play at Prior Lake at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7.
LV North 17, Burnsville 14 Burnsville almost got a victory against a ranked team, but instead came away with its fourth loss of the season. The Lightning was 6-0-1 in conference games at the beginning of the week. Eastview could clinch the conference championship with a victory in either of its final two regular-season games – Oct. 4 against Rosemount or 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at home against Prior Lake. Eastview is averaging 3.1 goals a game, tied with Kennedy for first in the conference. Gweh, a junior forward, has been the Lightning’s most explosive scorer with 19 goals in 14 games. Erickson has six goals and Espinda Banick five. Gweh, who didn’t play high school soccer last fall while sitting out a transfer season, “was sort of unknown early in the season,” Espinda Banick said. “People are starting to cover him now, and we expected that. We just have to find our other players.” Goalkeeper Sam Ruelas made eight saves in the Apple Valley game. He and Treston Kederer have split time in the Eastview goal, and each has a save percentage of .900 or better. Section 3AA playoffs are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Oct. 11. Eastview is likely to be the No. 1 seed, but three other teams in the section – Apple Valley, Eagan and Henry Sibley – have at least nine victories. Also in the section is Burnsville, which is responsible for the draw on Eastview’s record. The Lightning and Blaze played to a 1-1 tie Sept. 20.

Sixth-ranked Lakeville North had been averaging more than 35 points a game, but its offense sputtered at times against Burnsville. The Blaze intercepted three passes in the game. Burnsville (1-4) plays host to Eastview at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7. Burnsville head coach Tyler Krebs was on the Eastview staff from 1997 through 2010. He was defensive coordinator at Eastview before taking over the Blaze’s program.

(Photo by Mike Shaughnessy • Sun Newspapers) After falling behind 10-0 in the first quarter, the Blaze took the lead in the second on a 16-yard run by Michael Callanan and an 11-yard run by Dan Motl. North, however, regained the lead before halftime on a 32-yard touchdown pass, and there was no scoring in the second half.
Rosemount started 3-0 but has run into trouble against teams from Lakeville. After losing to Lakeville North 28-7 on Sept. 23, the Irish went to Lakeville South last week and lost 17-0. Rosemount had more yards, first downs and possession time than Lakeville South but never made it into the end zone. Lakeville South (5-0) led 3-0 at halftime and pulled away with two thirdquarter touchdowns. South quarterback Mitchell Leidner, a University of Minnesota recruit, passed for one score and ran for the other. Rosemount senior running back Andy Gustafson gained 116 yards on 25 carries. Sean Kalinowski caught four passes for 71 yards. The Irish (3-2) will try to break their two-game losing streak when they host Apple Valley at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7.

McNeil helps new team beat her old team Eagan prevails over Lakeville North in fiveset volleyball donnybrook Sept. 27 BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Taylr McNeil knew the date was coming up on Eagan’s volleyball schedule. But was she looking forward to it or dreading it? It’s easy to understand why McNeil might have mixed emotions about a match against Lakeville North, the team she helped win the state high school Class 3A title last year before her family moved to Eagan. “No, I was really excited,” she said last week. “I was a little nervous about it at first, but I’ve had a lot of support from my friends, family and teammates. “And this is something I do during club season. I play against [Lakeville North players] all the time. Maybe this was a little different.” Or maybe it was a lot different.

With the two schools’ student sections exchanging chants – some of them dealing specifically with McNeil – the Sept. 27 Eagan-Lakeville North match was unlike anything she ever experienced. Former teammates McNeil and Lakeville North’s Alyssa Goehner – possibly the state’s two best sophomore players – stood out during Eagan’s 25-19, 19-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-13 victory. McNeil had 28 kills and 25 digs, while Goehner had 34 kills and 35 digs. McNeil’s ability to handle the attention was tested early. She was poised to serve in front of the Lakeville North student section when the North students broke out with a chant of “traitor, traitor.” She cracked a smile and put the ball in play. An Eagan school official approached the North students and asked them not to repeat that particular chant, and it wasn’t heard again. McNeil said one of her biggest concerns was that her personal situation would distract her teammates. “I tried to make sure I didn’t put pressure on them,” she said.

“That tells you something about her maturity,” said Eagan coach Kathy Gillen Melville. “It’s easy to forget she’s just 15 years old.” Eagan, which entered this week 143, had yet to lose a best-of-five match. All three losses came in weekend tournaments, where the matches are best of three. Fortunately for the sixth-ranked Wildcats, the Lakeville North match wasn’t over after three games. They won the final two to remain undefeated in the South Suburban Conference at 5-0. Lakeville North, Lakeville South and Bloomington Jefferson were tied for second at 4-1. One measure of how closely matched Eagan and Lakeville North are was that after five sets and twoplus hours, Eagan had scored three more points. “We were going to keep playing hard,” McNeil said about the Wildcats falling behind 2-1. “We know we can beat teams that are really good.” Junior setter Nicole Johnson did a good job of running the Eagan offense, Gillen Melville said. Middle hitter Sarah Schuetz, a senior, scored some key points and could be an important player for Eagan down the stretch as opposing blockers focus on McNeil. Second-ranked Lakeville North (152) got 19 kills from senior outside hitter Kelly Nizzari. The Panthers, whose other loss was to Blaine in the Eagle Invitational tournament in Apple Valley, bounced back with a five-set victory at Wayzata on Oct. 1. They will play at home against third-ranked Bloomington Jefferson at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. Eagan has defeated Jefferson and Lakeville North but has a match with fourth-ranked Lakeville South on Oct. 18. Gillen Melville, who took a threeyear hiatus from coaching the Eagan varsity before returning this year, said she came back to a stronger conference. “Jefferson and Lakeville South are a lot stronger than they were a few years ago,” she said. “There’s a lot of depth in this conference.” Lakeville North will hold its own tournament Friday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 8. The field includes Marshall, the top-ranked team in Class 2A. Eagan will go to a tournament in Burnsville this weekend, where top-10 Class 3A teams such as Eden Prairie and Chanhassen will play.
