District 196 falls short of federal AYP standards Scores have improved over previous year’s BY MATTHEW HANKEY SUN NEWSPAPERS Though more than half the schools in District 196 made adequate yearly progress, the district as a whole fell short of the federal requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act. District 196 schools are among the 1,056 out of 2,255 schools – nearly half – that did not make AYP for the 2011 school year. But, the district did show improvement from the previous year’s results. The number of District 196 schools that made AYP in both reading and math increased from 11 in 2010 to 17 in 2011. Though the district fell short of the federal requirements, any improvement should be recognized, said Director of Teaching and Learning Steve Troen. “In a year where we had more AYP RESULTS: TO PAGE 4

Three Eagan residents running for Minnesota House of Representatives in 2012 Council member, former state rep. and a city parks commission chairperson to run BY MATTHEW HANKEY SUN NEWSPAPERS Three Eagan residents have recently filed to run for the Minnesota House of

Representatives for the 2012 election. DFL candidates Eagan City Council member Gary Hansen and former state representative Sandra Masin will contend for the District 38A seat next fall. The winner will challenge Republican Rep. Diane Anderson. In District 38B, DFL candidate Laurie Halverson will run against incumbent Republican Rep. Doug Wardlow for his seat in the election to be held November 2012.

The Minnesota DFL will have its caucus Feb. 2, 2012.

HALVERSON Eagan resident Laurie Halverson, 42, will run as the only District 38B DFL candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives against Rep. Doug Wardlow next year. Halverson has served on the Eagan Advisory Parks and Recreation Council since 2006 and has also served as director

for the Eagan Foundation Inc. Halverson decided to run because she felt compelled by friends and Eagan community members to make a change in the state government. “It had a lot to do with people who were asking me to run,” she said. “These were people I respected and we talked about it here as a family and the more we thought about it, the more we felt we were being called.” CANDIDATES: TO PAGE 12

Three Eastview students receive Eagle Scout Award Eastview High School students Eric Boeshart, Joe Dolan and Erik Nelson have all earned the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Scout Award. All three were recognized in a ceremony Oct. 2 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Apple Valley. Each candidate must earn 21 Merit badges and successfully complete a com-

munity related service project. Nationwide, only 2 percent of Boy Scouts attain the Eagle rank. Eric Boeshart’s Eagle project was completed at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church and involved transplanting three trees to make room for three community gardens. Joe Dolan’s project involved transforming the library courtyard at Greenleaf Elementary into a perennial garden with an I-Spy game for the students. Erik Nelson’s project consisted of landscaping the north entrance to Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.

schools make AYP, I think that’s pretty significant,” Troen said. “Obviously, every district would like every school would like to make AYP.” A school’s students and subgroups of students must meet the standards or show progress toward meeting AYP standards to qualify as meeting AYP on the whole. In short, if one subgroup fails, the school fails. If one school fails, the district fails. In Minnesota, the criteria for whether or not a school makes AYP is based largely on student scores on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments, which are given to students in grades 3-8, 10 and 11 each spring. These exams test students’ reading and math abilities. According to the district, if one subgroup of as few as 20 students does not meet the proficiency targets on the MCA reading and/or math tests, the school and district are listed as not making AYP. Not shying away from accountability and assessment, Troen would like to see a change in how adequate yearly progress is measured. He said schools that do not meet AYP shouldn’t be viewed as inadequate. “It is only one measure of a school,” Troen said of the AYP standards.

So don’t put it off; join the millions of women who “make time” for their mammograms each year. Call today to schedule an appointment. Fairview Ridges Breast Center, Burnsville Fairview Cedar Ridge Clinic, Apple Valley Fairview Eagan Clinic, Eagan fairview.org/mammo

When it comes to scheduling your mammogram, it’s easy to put off…and off…and off. However, making time for your mammogram can increase the chance of detecting breast cancer early, and in turn, successful treatment.

“Sometimes a school is labeled as not making adequate progress by a variety of measures, though they might have real strengths as a school.” One change Troen would like implemented is to measure a grade of students as they progress from one grade to the next. As it stands, the MCAs are given to the same grades each year and AYP results depend on the scores of one math test and one reading test. He doesn’t view that as comprehensive for marking a school’s improvement. “We could measure the same students over time, which would consistently measure apples to apples rather than apples to oranges, so to speak,” Troen said. Troen said plans are in place to help the state be free of the harsh penalties under NCLB. For a school or school district to make AYP and be considered successful under NCLB, 100 percent of its students must be able to score proficient in both reading and math by 2014. “Many states, not just Minnesota, are pursuing waivers to develop alternatives to the current system,” Troen said. “It identifies multiple growth measures of tracking schools and their progress.” In 2011, the district improved its reading scores, which Troen thinks helped improve AYP results throughout all

AYP results FROM PREVIOUS PAGE schools. “Overall, we saw strong growth throughout the district in reading, so that was real heartening, Troen said. “I think that lead to more of our schools being classified as making AYP. Math results, Troen said, are harder to quantify this year. The state increased the rigor of the tests, he said. “Comparing this year’s test to previous years is very different, Troen said. “We’re really trying to create a whole new baseline for the math test, which happened throughout the state, not just the district. Schools that receive federal funds for Title I programs that support reading and math instruction are subject to consequences under NCLB if they do not make AYP in the same subject for two or more years in a row. Deerwood Elementary School, Glacier Hills Elementary School of Arts and Science and Westview Elementary Schools made AYP in both subjects last year, but not two years in a row. As a result, these schools, along with Cedar Park Elementary School, Rosemount Elementary School and Southview Elementary Schools are subject to NCLB consequences.

Parents of students at these six schools will receive notice regarding actions the school is taking and how parents can become involved. Students at Deerwood, Glacier Hills, Rosemount, Southview and Westview are eligible for school choice. Students at Cedar Park are eligible for school choice and students who are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals must also be offered tutoring at no cost under NCLB consequences. “When people talk about the penalties, that’s what doesn’t seem fair, said Renee Ervasti, District 196 K-12 coordinator of curriculum. The district as a whole also did not make AYP in math among Hispanic students, black students, students receiving English Language Learning and special education services, and students eligible for free or reduced-price school meals, according to the district. Since this was the fifth year in a row not making AYP, the district – as well as schools who didn’t meet AYP – must submit a revised AYP plan and submit it to the Minnesota Department of Education, Ervasti said. “The plans are due to the state 90 days after the AYP results were released, Ervasti said, which would put the deadline at Dec. 30. “As the schools do their plans, those plans get published on the state’s website.

Finding the fun and humor in being an adult As I get older, I find myself more aware of the rites of passages that mark the march into adulthood. For one, this summer my wife and I planted our first vegetable garden. If you would have told me as recently as three years ago that I would successfully plant, grow and harvest more jalapeno peppers in a summer than Twins victories, well, let’s just say I’d be surprised. But, the thing is, I genuinely enjoyed watching our crops grow, mature and ripen into actual edible food – a remarkable feat for someone not born with the proverbial green thumb. In addition to the joy our garden brought me, it spared me from taking more trips to the grocery store. (Actually,

MATTHEW HANKEY Eagan/Apple Valley Community Editor

that isn’t true because I have groceries delivered to my house, but that’s another story for another time.) But, there is another rite, milestone, what-have-you, that occurred in my life last month. About three weeks ago, my wife informed me that she would be hosting a book club meeting Sept. 27 at our house. Before she spoke another word, I interjected with something to the effect of, “That’s cool, darling. I understand you would like the house all to yourself and friends for the evening.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thank you to mini-Relay For Life hosts To the editor: On behalf of the American Cancer Society, I would like to thank the residents of Woodbridge & Chardon Court in New Hope for hosting a mini-Relay For Life event on their grounds on Sept. 24. A special thanks to the staff & resident volunteers on the planning committee, as well as the many helping hands who volunteered the day of the event. We also appreciate the generosity of the individual donors and community supporters. Residents of Woodbridge & Chardon Court, along with their families, friends, and other community members, walked a track lined with luminaria bags in honor & in

memory of loved ones who have been affected by cancer from noon to 3 p.m. the day of the event. Several survivors in attendance kicked off the event by walking the first lap. Through individual fundraising and onsite fundraising such as food sales, activities and a silent auction, the event raised more than $4000! The American Cancer Society is incredibly grateful to be the recipient of the funds raised. The money raised will fund no-cost programs for cancer patients & their families, essential education for cancer prevention, life-saving cancer research, and policy-changing advocacy work. New Hope area residents certainly did their part to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Thank you! Kenzie Vlack Eagan

I wouldn’t mind excommunicating myself from our house. Nope, not one bit.” My thinking in volunteering to leave the house is it is better to resign before getting fired, so to speak. At any rate, my house is now a locale for ladies book club meetings, which we all know is a front for women to get together, gossip and drink wine. (It’s OK. You can admit it, ladies). And, that’s fine, but don’t expect me to stick around to overhear engaging conversation topics such as Grey’s Anatomy relationship conflicts or which Rachael Ray food recipes were a hit. To be fair, the majority of these women would likewise want nothing to do with talking sports and politics – the go-to conversation topics my friends

and I excel in. However, if my home had a finished basement, I wouldn’t mind being a prisoner in my home for a night. But alas, that is not the case, and so I write this column from the friendly confines of a Crystal coffee shop. The first book club, according to my wife, was a great success. The club discussed the book for 45 minutes and all its participants enjoyed our malefree home for the evening. Afterwards, it was brought to my attention that my home would not be the regular meeting place for the book club. Each club member will take turns hosting each monthly meeting, which means I won’t have to self-exile from my home for nearly another year. And so it goes.

backyard issues weren’t really being heard in St. Paul and weren’t part of the discussions at the Capitol this year.” In her discussions with Eagan residents, Halverson has sensed a growing level of disappointment in the state legislature. “I think we here a lot of anger and a lot of frustration with the vitriol and it manifests itself is what some people think is apathy,” Halverson said. “I don’t think it’s apathy, but a lot of people don’t now how to channel their thoughts and channel their frustrations. I’ve really been committed to connecting to people who are disconnected from the system.” Growing up in a political family, Halverson watched her father and grandfather serve at the local and state level in Minnesota. Her father served as mayor of Chisago City and her grandfather was mayor of Lindstrom and later served in the Minnesota Senate. Halverson said her grandfather loved to tell stories and she took to heart his examples of how the state legislature operated when he served in the 1960s and ’70s. “He really talked about the way people worked together,” Halverson said. “He served before there were party designations. When he talked about his accomplishments in the legislature, the

accomplishments were always part of Minnesota working together for the common good.” Halverson graduated from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul with a degree in political science and attended the Master of Public Affairs program at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. She worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota in Eagan, leading initiatives to engage citizens in improving health care policy. She also is a volunteer Sunday school teacher, and is a member of the League of Women Voters of Minnesota and the Citizens League. Recently, Halverson has been a stayat-home mom to her son Kai, 3. Her husband, Jason, is a pilot with Mesaba Airlines.

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-

tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. In addition to exposing these truths about thyroid treatment, Dr. Gilman will also discuss natural solutions to help thyroid problems. Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating for Dr. Gilman’s private thyroid seminar is limited. It will be held on Tuesday, October 18th at 6:30 PM at 1964 Rahncliff Ct., Suite 600, Eagan. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!

Candidates FROM PREVIOUS PAGE District 38A seat,” Hansen said. “They’ve expressed some concern about the divisiveness currently in the legislature and the legislature’s current inability to resolves some big issues that are imporHansen tant to us.” Hansen said they current legislative leadership has proved unable to reach compromises on key issues. “I think they’re looking for common sense leadership – more moderate type legislation,” Hansen said of Eagan and Burnsville residents. Hansen believes his experience with resolving issues in the Eagan City Council would serve him well at the state level. The council, he said, has identified what’s important to its residents and put those interests above individual plans. “We have found ways to resolve issues, including making compromises at times,” he said. Additionally, Hansen said his job duties make him a good choice for the

District 38A seat. As a risk management officer at AgriBank, FCB in St. Paul and commercial arbitrator on the Minnesota Alternative Dispute Resolution Rule 114 Neutrals Roster, Hansen has years of conflict resolution experience. “It’s important to have that dispute resolution training to bring as a strength to bring into the legislative setting,” Hansen said. Ultimately, Hansen wants to restore a sense that politicians on both sides of the aisle can work together. The current legislature, he said, is too divided by individual’s ideologies. This contributed heavily to the budget crisis and state shutdown this summer, he said. “My goal would be try to restore more bipartisanship in the legislature,” Hansen said. “We need to try to reach a long-term solution to our budget crisis. It doesn’t make sense to put the solution down the road for future generations to deal with.” Hansen’s duties in the south metro government extend beyond the Eagan City Council. Hansen is the acting mayor when Mayor Mike Maguire is absent and he also represents Eagan as the city’s representative on the Dakota Communications Center Board of

Candidates FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Directors, as vice chair of the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority Board and on the Cedar Corridor Group. Additionally, Hansen is a member of the Suburban Transit Association Legislative Committee and the Metro Cities Transportation and General Government Policy Committee. Hansen is a graduate of South Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science. He also graduated cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law. Hansen and his wife Kathy, a math teacher at Eagan High School, have lived in Eagan since 1984. They have two daughters and a son who live and work in the Twin Cities area.

MASIN Sandra Masin, who will challenge Hansen for the District 38A seat, served as a Minnesota House representative from 2007-2010. Masin, 68, was defeated in the 2010 election by Masin

Republican Diane Anderson. Masin is once again running for the Minnesota House of Representatives to restore confidence in the state’s government she thinks is currently lacking. “I think we need to develop a community or society where it’s government and its processes are held in high regard,” Masin said. “I think I have the background and reputation for doing things both in a forthright manner and I do a lot of outreach and consulting with the people in my community.” She said the legislature started making some headway while she served, particularly with helping the economy and jobs. Masin said she hoped that with a new governor, the state could push continue to pass good legislation. The recent economic problems and state budget crisis this summer, she said, are long overdue to be dealt with. Her time working at the capitol should be something voters consider next year. “For people that were looking real closely… literally [the legislature] did nothing for jobs,” Masin said. “I know I have the experience. I think experience and knowledge is critical at this point. I think many of these issues should have been solved a long time ago.” Masin said the state government is heading in the wrong direction with regard to listening to its constituents. She said that in her discussions with dis-

trict residents, many are feeling left out. “We need to have some belief that the elected officials are working on their behalf,” Masin said. “The average people are left holding the bag and left with so little. That absolutely needs to be changed. I believe I can make a difference. If we can change the culture to move Minnesota forward so that everybody feels that they’re part of the system, I would consider that a real achievement and we absolutely have to do that.” While in office, Masin helped allot funds for transportation infrastructure, maintaining and improving roads and

bridges, which helped create jobs. Additionally, she sponsored a bill that created the Ultra High-Speed Broadband Task Force. Since her 2010 defeat, Masin has maintained her political connections on the state level and has traveled to national conventions. She said the state government shutdown caught many around the country off guard. “What happened this summer really tarnished the image of Minnesota,” Masin said. “We’ve got a lot of work to get Minnesota back to where it was even a couple years ago, let alone the issues the we need to deal with.”

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Apple Valley flushing hydrants across the city through Oct. 24 The Apple Valley Public Works Department is flushing hydrants to ensure they are operational and to purge any rusty or stagnant water from the water mains. Crews began flushing near the water treatment plant and have since worked out to the ends of the distribution system. Flushing should be completed by Oct. 24 and hydrants requiring maintenance will then be repaired. More than 2,400 hydrants serve the city and these hydrants are flushed in the spring and again in the fall to purge rusty water from the distribution system. During flushing, residents may receive rusty water that could stain their laundry. Residents are asked to check the quality of the water before doing laundry during hydrant flushing. Although the discolored water is not aesthetically pleasing and may have a strong mineral taste, it is safe to drink. Place a pitcher of water in the refrigerator when water is rusty. The iron will settle to the bottom of the pitcher leaving clear

water to drink. The water treatment plant is removing the iron from the water being pumped into the water distribution system. Info: 952-953-2400

District 196 School Board approves lower property tax levy for 2012 Taxpayers should not see increase in school portion of property taxes next year BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS The District 196 School Board approved a proposed property tax levy for 2012 at its Sept. 26 meeting that is 3.4 percent lower than the property tax levy for the current year. The proposed payable 2012 levy of $75.8 million is a decrease from the payable 2011 levy of $78.4 million. It is also $100,000 less than five years ago, when the district’s payable 2007 levy was $75.9 million. “That’s a good thing,” Solomon

said Jeff Solomon, district director of finance and operations. “What this means is that our levy has decreased by about $2.6 million, but because of the property wealth declining in our district, we have become eligible for equalization aid.” In addition to the levy amount the school board approves, changes in market value and state equalization aid also impact property taxes from year to year. The market value of all property in the district decreased for the third year in a row to $13.7 billion. The decrease this year was 6.4 percent compared to last year, meaning property taxes will be spread over a smaller total valuation of property. Because of the decreasing market value, however, the district is eligible to receive additional equalization aid from the state that will make up for the reduced property tax levy. “The fact that we receive more equal-

ization aid, that naturally helped our levy go down,” Solomon said. “We knew that if we didn’t bring our levy down, that there would be a tax increase to our public because of the repeal of the Market Value Magnuson Homestead Credit.” District School Board Chairperson Jackie Magnuson said it’s an impressive feat that the board was able to lower the levy by as much as it did. “We are happy to be able to keep the school tax levy lower than last year at a time when the state continues to shift more costs down to the local level through elimination of the Homestead Market Value Credit,” Magnuson said. “This year’s levy is $100,000 less than the school levy five years ago.” The district is scheduled to receive about the same amount of revenue next

Jeremiah attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and later studied under the mentorship of the nationally renowned portrait and fresco painter Mark Balma. David similarly was accepted into a full time master apprenticeship program at the young age of 16 at the highly respected Atelier Lack Studio. They followed in the family tradition of mastering a professional craft and skill which they have brought to our company. year that it received this year, but the property tax portion of the levy has decreased and its aid portion has increased slightly because of equalization aid, Solomon said. Because the levy is lower than last year’s, taxpayers should be pleased with the school property tax portion of their 2012 tax bill. “The bottom line to our taxpayers is with a decrease in our gross levy amount – that should represent no tax increase for them as a result of the credit takeaway,” said Solomon. “We’re pretty confident there won’t be an increase in the school property taxes.” Once the district sends its proposed levy to the county, district taxpayers can expect to see what their 2012 property tax bills will look like in about one month. “In mid-November then, the county will distribute proposed property tax statements, combined proposed levies from school districts, counties and cities in the area and our taxpayers will then be able to see the impact of the proposed levies that we’re certifying,” Solomon said. Property taxes represent about 23 percent of the total revenues the district will receive this year. State aids and credits make up 63 percent of revenues, 5 percent comes from federal aid and 9 percent comes from grants, donations and other similar sources. The final payable 2012 property tax levy the board approves in December may be less than but not greater than the proposed levy. On Dec. 12, ISD 196 school board will certify the final levy at its regular meeting with a review of the proposed property tax and budget.

Three-TD rally gives Burnsville a victory at Eastview

South Suburban should have competitive cross country meet

Some of the state’s best teams and individuals will try to win championships at the South Suburban Conference cross country meet this week. Last year’s individual champions, Burnsville’s Cole O’Brien and Prior Lake’s Taylor Scholl, are back. And last year’s team champions, Rosemount’s boys and Lakeville South’s girls, are favored again this year. The Rosemount boys, ranked second in Class AA, will be challenged by ninthranked Eastview as well as an unranked Burnsville team that finished ahead of No. 3 Wayzata at a meet last week. Two South Suburban teams are ranked in the top four in Class AA: Lakeville South (second) and Eagan (fourth). The conference championships will be Friday, Oct. 14, at Eagan High School. The girls varsity race will be at 4:05 p.m. with the boys race starting at 4:40. Times typically have been slow in conference meets at Eagan High, but “I think a lot of that has to do with the weather,” Rosemount coach Chris Harder said. “There’s a lot of clay under the topsoil, and if it’s rained, it can be pretty muddy. It’ll be interesting to see

SECTION 3AA SOCCER The Section 3AA soccer championship games will be Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Park High School in Cottage Grove. The boys game will be 5 p.m. with the girls game at 7.

Burnsville’s Cole O’Brien (left) and Josh Thorson of Wayzata battle for first place at the Victoria Lions Invitational cross country meet. Thorson won the 5K boys race in 15 minutes, 19.6 seconds. O’Brien was second, about three seconds behind Thorson. (Photo by Mike Shaughnessy – Sun Newspapers)

As an assistant coach at Eastview, Tyler Krebs helped a fledgling football program become a multiple-time state playoff qualifier. Now, Krebs owns a victory over his former team. The first-year Burnsville head coach watched his team score three fourthquarter touchdowns to win at Eastview 3629 on Oct. 7. Burnsville is 2-4 overall, but three of its losses have been by three points or fewer. The Blaze took a 15-0 first-quarter lead before Eastview scored the game’s next four touchdowns, giving the Lightning a 29-15 lead entering the fourth quarter and setting the stage for the Blaze’s comeback. Two touchdown runs (5 yards and 1 yard) by quarterback Dan Motl brought the Blaze into a 29-29 tie. Motl threw a 43yard touchdown pass to Jalen Dyson for the game-winner with 1:15 remaining. All three fourth-quarter touchdowns came with a 30-mph wind at the Blaze’s back. So, too, were Burnsville’s two firstquarter scores, a 19-yard pass from Motl to Brian VanderWoude and a 20-yard run by Dyson. Eastview (2-4) rushed for 226 yards, and all four of its touchdowns came on the ground. A.J. Stockwell (1 yard), Ryan Reger (1 yard), Nick Zelenak (6 yards) and Eric Krupke (2 yards) scored for the Lightning. Krupke gained 96 yards on 26 carries. Ben Sherman was Burnsville’s leading rusher with 69 yards on just seven carries. Motl attempted just six passes, completing four, but each completion went for at least 19 yards. Burnsville plays at Eagan (2-4) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, before closing the regular season at home against Lakeville South at FOOTBALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Boys preview Rosemount has won every meet it’s been in except the Roy Griak Invitational, where the Irish took third but were the top Minnesota team in a field that included some of the Midwest’s top squads. Rosemount dominated at last week’s Ev Berg Invitational in Owatonna, with Nathan Rock (second), Trevor Capra (third), Chandler Dye (fifth) and Calvin Lehn (sixth) finishing in the top six individually. “It was very windy and warm that day, but we still closed our 1-5 spread,” Harder said. “That gives us a lot of confidence going into the conference meet.” Even so, Harder suggested Burnsville might go into the South Suburban meet as the favorite. Led by senior Cole O’Brien, last year’s state Class AA runner-up, the Blaze is coming on fast. Burnsville finished second to topranked Stillwater at the Victoria Lions Invitational last week in Chaska, but

Football FROM PREVIOUS PAGE 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. Eastview plays host to Rosemount at 7 p.m. Friday before going to Bloomington Jefferson on Oct. 19.

Rosemount 40, AV 6 The Irish ended their two-game losing streak while keeping Apple Valley winless. Rosemount rushed for 346 yards and led 33-6 at halftime. There was an early indication it would be the Irish’s night when Andy Gustafson ran 80 yards for a score on his team’s first play from scrimmage. Gustafson had 112 yards on just eight carries. Khalid Al-Khatib, a junior, had 88 yards on 12 carries and scored once. Rosemount quarterback Nate Lemoine ran for one score and threw touchdown passes to Sean Kalinowski and Mitchell Leko. The Irish defense also scored on a fumble return. Dom McDew-Stauffer rushed for Apple Valley’s touchdown. Quarterback Matt Thomas completed eight of 15 passes for 86 yards. Rosemount (4-2) has only a slim chance for a second consecutive South Suburban Conference championship. The Irish would need to win their last two regular-

finished four points ahead of third ranked Wayzata. O’Brien was second to Wayzata’s John Thorson in that race. Senior Abdullah Salan (16th), ninth-grader Faysol Mamoud (23rd) and sophomore Ali Ahmed (25th) also finished in the top 25. Eastview is coming off a victory in an invitational meet in La Crosse, Wis., the Lightning’s second of the season (the team also has two second-place finishes). Nick Oelke, Ken Hoffman, Joe Manders, David Salter, John Donlan and Dan Spika all finished in the top 11 at the La Crosse meet. Contenders for the boys individual championship also include Bloomington Jefferson senior Jan Ketterson, who finished third at the Victoria Lions Invitational, and Eagan junior Sidney Speir, who took first at the Eagle Invitational in Apple Valley in September.

Second-ranked Lakeville South is undefeated this season. The Cougars’ latest victory was at last week’s Victoria Lions Invitational. South edged Shakopee by three points for the team championship, and ninth-grader Annie Brekken was second individually behind two-time defending state Class AA champion Maria Hauger of

Shakopee. Another South ninth-grader, Kaytlyn Larson, has been second in three meets this season, including the Eagle Invitational in September. Danielle Anderson, a junior, leads fourth-ranked Eagan. Anderson finished fourth in the Gold Division at the

season games along with two losses by Lakeville North and one loss each by Lakeville South and Prior Lake. Victories in their next two games likely would give the Irish the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A, Section 3 playoffs that begin Oct. 25. Rosemount plays at Eastview at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, and is home against Eagan at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19. Apple Valley (0-6) has been outscored 235-40 this season but might be past the toughest part of its schedule. The Eagles, who played four of their first six games on the road, have home games against Bloomington Jefferson on Friday and Bloomington Kennedy on Oct. 19.

Prior Lake 21, Eagan 14 Eagan had the edge in most of the statistics from its Oct. 7 game at Prior Lake – just not the one that matters most. The Wildcats outgained Prior Lake 329215 and ran 30 more plays, but never led. Eagan scored both its touchdowns in the fourth quarter on passes from Drew Bauer to Michael Busch (12 yards) and Eric Woodcock (4 yards). Bauer passed for 122 yards and rushed 29 times for 161 yards. Linebackers Alex Mangan and Mitch Knutson had four unassisted tackles each, and Micah Hausman recovered a fumble. Eagan (2-4) hosts Burnsville at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, before ending the regular season at Rosemount on Oct. 19.

23

Roy Griak Invitational, the only 5,000meter race for Minnesota high school girls all year (the girls South Suburban Conference race is 4,000 meters). Senior Alanna Stangl is also one of the Wildcats’ top runners, and ninthgraders Anna Van Wyk, Kelli Praska and Karina Johnson are in the varsity lineup. “It’s a tough conference for freshmen, but those three have been in our top 10 all season, and they do a good job of running together,” said Eagan girls coach Lisa Langenhahn. The Wildcats have never won a conference championship on their home course, and that’s something they want to change. “Absolutely,” Langenhahn said. “The girls are really fired up about that.” Prior Lake also could contend for the South Suburban girls championship, and Rosemount is on the rebound after finishing first last week at the Ev Berg Invitational. Irish senior Tori Grund returned to the lineup after missing about a month because of injury. “Tori should be much better in our meets coming up,” Harder said. Burnsville sophomore Vivian Hett has moved into the top 10 in the girls Class AA individual rankings at No. 9. Lakeville North junior Taylor Perkins had a top-10 finish at the Victoria Lions Invitational last week.

Notebook: Eastview boys, Eagan girls, Burnsville girls get top seeds BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS No. 1-ranked Eastview rolled into the boys soccer playoffs with a 15-0-1 record and the top seed in Section 3AA. Eagan’s girls, meanwhile, earned the top seed in their section and are seeking a third consecutive trip to the state tournament. The Eastview boys played No. 8 seed Hastings in a section quarterfinal game Tuesday night, after this edition went to press. No. 2-seeded Eagan (11-3-2), the section runner-up the last two years, played Rosemount (3-10-2) on Tuesday. Burnsville (7-5-4) faced Park of Cottage Grove, and two-time defending state Class AA champion Apple Valley (10-5-1) played Henry Sibley. If Eastview wins its first-round game, it would play host to Apple Valley or Henry Sibley in the semifinals Thursday, Oct. 13. Eagan’s girls played St. Paul Highland Park in Tuesday’s quarterfinals. If the Wildcats win, they will play Rosemount (10-4-2) or Hastings in the semifinals Thursday. In other Section 3AA girls quarterfinals, Eastview (10-2-4) played Henry Sibley and Apple Valley (5-9-2) went to Park of Cottage Grove.

The Section 3AA championship games will be 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Park of Cottage Grove. Burnsville drew the No. 1 seed in the Section 2AA girls playoffs and meet Bloomington Kennedy in a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Thursday. If the Blaze (12-4) wins, it would play host to Prior Lake or Bloomington Jefferson in a semifinal game Saturday, Oct. 15. Eden Prairie and Edina are the second and third seeds in the Section 2AA girls tournament. If Burnsville is in the title game, it would play at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Tennis playoffs Rosemount and Eagan met in the Section 3AA girls tennis semifinals Tuesday at Life Time Fitness in Lakeville. The Irish, who are defending section champions, were seeded second and Eagan was seeded third. The Rosemount-Eagan winner plays Prior Lake or Visitation for the section championship at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, also at Life Time Fitness. The Section 3AA individual tournament starts Friday, Oct. 14, at Life Time Fitness. Rosemount’s Virginia Norder and Eagan’s Danielle Donahue are the top two seeds in singles.

Eagan seniors Liza and Varvara Zelenina are seeded second in the section doubles tourney. Rosemount’s Ally Baker and Kirsten Hoffman are seeded third.

AV wins October Classic Apple Valley, the host team, won all four of its matches to take first place at the October Classic volleyball tournament last weekend. The Eagles defeated Rochester John Marshall, Osseo and Minneota in pool play before sweeping two games from Sioux Falls (S.D.) Lincoln in the best-of-three championship match. Apple Valley, which had seen its record drop two matches below .500, improved to 13-10 with the four victories in the October Classic as well as a South Suburban Conference victory over Burnsville. Last week the Eagles had fourth-ranked Eagan on the ropes before losing 16-25, 2725, 33-31, 25-21, 15-7 in a conference match.

Johnson to NDSU Eastview senior Zack Johnson, a 305pound offensive lineman, verbally committed to play football at North Dakota State University, the Fargo Forum newspaper reported. The Bison, ranked in the top five in the Football Championship Subdivision (for-

merly Division I-AA), defeated Minnesota 37-24 on Sept. 24. NDSU recruits the Twin Cities area heavily. Sun-Current area players on the Bison roster include Zach Vraa of Rosemount, Frank Veldman of Eastview and C.J. Smith of Burnsville. Johnson is the second SSC football player in the 2012 graduating class to make a verbal commitment. Lakeville South quarterback Mitch Leidner chose Minnesota during the summer.

Wrestling recruiting news Rosemount senior Adam Jackson, runner-up at 152 pounds in the 2011 state Class 3A wrestling tournament, verbally committed last week to the Air Force Academy. The Air Force wrestling coach is Joel Sharratt, a former Minnesota high school state champion at Bloomington Kennedy. Jackson is projected to wrestle at 157 pounds in college. He was 38-3 for the Irish last season. Minnesota has picked up a couple of recruits from the Apple Valley powerhouse. Eagle seniors Dakota Trom and Brandon Kingsley, both three-time state champions, have verbally committed to the Gophers. Kingsley is 143-3 over the last three high school seasons. Trom is 134-8.
