Giving up their candy for a cause Eagan orthodontist collects patients’ Halloween candy to ship to U.S. troops overseas BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS “‘Tis better to give than receive” is a saying commonly associated with Christmas. One Eagan orthodontist has taken that saying to heart and has applied it to Halloween. For the past seven years, Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth has organized a candy “buy back” program for her patients at her office, 3340 Sherman Court in Eagan. This buy back program also takes place at the Cosmopolitan Orthodontics offices in Lakeville and Savage. The program began when Eisenhuth asked her patients to turn in their sticky candy that can ruin their braces they collected trick-or-treating on Halloween. “The first year we collected about 120

pounds and we thought it was a lot,” said Eisenhuth. Eventually, she collected enough candy that something had to be done with the piles of treats growing in her office. “As it happened over the years, we had so much candy and that’s when we actually started it sending overseas,” said Eisenhuth. “We started with kids who had family in the war. Now it’s growing and growing and I think we collected 960 pounds this year.” All the treats collected, along with dental supplies such as toothbrushes, are now shipped to U.S. troops stationed overseas in Afghanistan. Handwritten ‘thank you’ notes written to the soldiers for their service are also included in the packages. “The thank you notes are amazing and are very thoughtful,” said Eisenhuth. “It’s great to be a part of that.” Eisenhuth has partnered with the nonprofit organization Blue Star Moms, who use the candy as packing material for the care packages they send to their family members in the armed forces.

The candy will be shipped late this week and will likely go to military units from Minnesota, said Peter Eisenhuth, Jennifer’s husband. For each pound of candy turned in, donors receive tokens that can be saved or exchanged on the spot for prizes. The gifts range from gift cards to iPods and other items for those that turn in their candy. Eisenhuth said her patients’ willingness to part with their candy is vital to her buy back program. “We are so happy with the generosity with some of these kids,” Eisenhuth said. “Some of these kids were out there for two hours collecting candy knowing they wouldn’t be eating any of it.” One of Eisenhuth’s patients, 10-yearold Grace Remmel, has donated her Halloween candy for the past three years. This year, Grace estimated she collected three or four pounds of candy while trick-or-treating and donated half of her stash to the buy back program. “I think it’s a really good idea because they just can’t just out and buy candy at a store like we can,” said Grace of the troops. “All the soldiers are saving us and

it’s nice to donate candy.” Grace’s favorite candies are Twix bars and Hershey’s bars, but parting with those special treats was not difficult, she said. “It was easier knowing that they would go to a good cause,” said Grace. “When my mom told me she was like, ‘Why are you giving away all your favorites?’ I just said that it doesn’t really matter. I can get candy every single day. They get candy almost once or twice a year.” Another patient, 11-year-old Joe Reardon, has also donated his trick-ortreating bounty to Dr. Eisenhuth’s program for three years. This year, Joe spent three hours trickor-treating, collecting three and a half pounds of candy, though he said he has donated more in the past. “Last year, I think me and my sister donated five or six pounds,” said Joe. “There were way more houses open last year. A lot more people were gone this year.” Joe takes pride knowing his contribuCANDY: TO NEXT PAGE

We have people who donate candy who aren’t even patients. “It’s pretty rewarding.”

Enjoy the food during the holidays, maybe even overdo it Don’t make it a habit, but indulging a bit is as much tradition as turkey In my last column, I told you that 2011 has been a year of many firsts for me. My wife and I planted, harvested and devoured our inaugural vegetable garden crops and for the first time – and certainly not the last – our home was offered up as a book club safe house for one autumn night. More than a year ago, I married my longtime girlfriend of five years. Many changes encompass this lifealtering agreement, one of which is how to divide spending holidays between our respective families. This is the catalyst for another first for me and also an excuse to indulge in the wondrous foods that circulate the dinner tables during the holiday season. In years past, I traveled to

MATTHEW HANKEY Apple Valley/Eagan Community Editor

my hometown Appleton, Wis., every year for Christmas and Thanksgiving, while my wife sometimes accompanied me. But more often than not, she spent those holidays with her family in the Twin Cities. But alas, marriage has bound our holiday fates together and we are now as inseparable as Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. Wait. Strike that. I meant as inseparable as the Vikings and Minnesota. What? They might leave the state, you say? Nevermind. Let’s just say we’re now inseparable. We concluded to spend every other year with each side of our family for Thanksgiving. Christmas, on the other hand, is more complicated and I will spare those details for another time.

In 2010, we traveled to Appleton to have Thanksgiving with my mom, sister and my sister’s future in-laws. This year, we will stay in Minnesota for Turkey Day. But returning to the point of the column. This Thanksgiving will be the first time my wife and I host her mother’s side of the family for the annual dinner. Now, we will not be accommodating her entire family. When fully assembled, her mom’s side could nearly field a game day roster for the Vikings. At most, we will be hosting a dozen people in our modestsized home. The quarters will be cozy, but that’s how holidays should be. The food assignments will be divided among our guests to alleviate the cooking burden for my wife and I. I’m not sure what our assignment will be, but I do know I will thoroughly enjoy the smorgasbord that will likely fill our table. With the numerous diet

fads and health and wellness awareness that has permeated our society, overblown and unhealthy holiday meals should be enjoyed for what they are. It would be fatalistic to indulge daily in the kinds of foods that comprise a holiday spread, not too mention expensive. But don’t give in to the guilt you may feel for going back for seconds, thirds, what have you. It may seem uncouth to encourage overeating, but if you’re healthy enough to do it, more power to you. Whether we want to acknowledge it, many of us will have too much to eat over the holidays. All I’m saying is embrace it, own it and don’t make it a habit. We should be thankful for a couple days a year: We have the ability to overindulge in delicious foods. I know I will, even if only for a few days. But, it could lead to another first for the upcoming year – a gym membership.

I may have been brainwashed (but, really, books are good) When I was a kid, I would frequently mispronounce words. Frequently. I bet there’s a study done by someone more educated than I on the subject clearly delineating why and how this works, but I’m chalking it up to the massive amount of reading I did as a child coupled with the obverse statistic showing the time spent socializing or speaking with other people. I learned to read and in the process picked up words that I’d never heard spoken before and thus did not know the correct pronunciation. If anyone were to need to shoulder the burden of this affectation, I would place that

DANIEL CALLAHAN Sun-Current Managing Editor

blame squarely on the shoulders of my mother for one particular reason: She made us read. Well, maybe “made” isn’t the right word for it. Instead, she blackmailed us with reading. Let me set the scene. It’s mid-afternoon, and my siblings and I are home from school but lacking any real interest in doing anything productive. Enter my mother.

“Whoever’s not reading is getting chores.” Suddenly we’re all literary enthusiasts. Maybe it’s that childhood conditioning to view reading, books and overall literacy as work-avoided rather than as a chore itself that drove me to become a lifelong lover of literature. After all, post-high school, I went on to an institution of higher education and earned a degree in English, and I work with weaving words on a semi-daily basis. I believe in the idea that being able to effectively communicate is a key factor in getting ahead in this world. One could make the argument that the speed of communication

and transmission of information in this day and age has made it impossible to be anything but an improv artist. We’re forced by the immediacy of our culture to think on our feet and get responses out more and more quickly. And what’s the advice professional authors so often give to aspiring writers? Read. I’d offer that it doesn’t matter where you want to go careerwise; being able to communicate effectively is a required skill for any industry. Those siblings I mentioned went on to work in advertising, marketing and the culinary arts. For those of you who hoped CALLAHAN: TO NEXT PAGE

Callahan FROM PREVIOUS PAGE I would make it through this column without making it even slightly self-referential, I’m sorry, but better luck next time. When I was thinking of the best way to tie the importance of literacy to one of my favorite topics – community involvement – I was sent a message about an organization that promotes reading and community all in one swell foop. Little Free Libraries are, to be simplistic, little wooden boxes full of books. With me so far? These little boxes are built, filled with books and put up on private property where people can access them, taking a book and leaving a book. Honestly, I think it’s genius. And not because we lack opportunities to find books in our communities. The Hennepin, Dakota and Anoka county library systems are laudable in their own right for the programs, services and books they provide to the communities.

Sure one can donate money or lobby for larger pieces of the municipal budget pie for the local library. I’m not saying residents of any community shouldn’t patronize their local library ‘cause they certainly should. But there are those who are unable to do these things. Putting a small library at the end of any street brings the books to the potential readers. There are already locations in St. Louis Park, Minneapolis and St. Paul, among others. Putting one up is as simply as, well, putting one up. The really nifty thing about this sort of movement is the ownership. The whole process requires the participants to, well, participate in a much larger function than if they were simply a user of one of the county libraries. There’s an inherent trust in leaving something out for someone else to literally take. That trust is essential, I think, to the development of any community, and anything we can do, especially something as self-maintaining as a program like this, is great. For more information on the Little Free Library project and how to get involved, visit littlefreelibrary.org.

DARTS launches winter rescue campaign BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS Not many people enjoy going out in the frigid Minnesota cold to shovel snow, but when the time spent is to help those who are unable to help themselves the temperature seems to rise. Officials with DARTS are in search of volunteers to assist in the organization’s winter rescue campaign. The effort is to connect local volunteers with elder neighbors in Dakota County who need help clearing snow from their sidewalks and driveways. DARTS is a West St. Paulbased nonprofit whose goal is to connect people to services and partnerships that improve their quality of life, help them age well, and enable them to engage in their community. Colleen Fritsch, director of volunteer resources, said DARTS launched the winter campaign in October in order to serve more individuals in need. “We have for many years offered snow removal for older adults who can’t get out and maintain their yards and snow,” Fritsch said. “In the winter time, it’s really a big issue because that can even increase isolation.” For those who DARTS serves, isolation is one of the areas the nonprofit likes to

address year-round with the help from volunteers in all communities in Dakota County. Since 1974, the organization has been assisting older adults and caregivers of families with services that meet individuals’ needs as they age. But in the meantime, Fritsch said the winter is especially a time of need for volunteer help. “This year we have made a concerted effort to try an increase the number of elders we are serving with snow removal,” she said. “We have been seeking more volunteers because clearly the more volunteers we have, the more seniors we can serve.” For the campaign, organizers are using the popular social networking site Facebook to help spread the word, as well as sending out emails to those on the organization’s lists. “Even with that we have a waiting list of over 20 seniors that want snow removal this winter that we don’t have enough volunteers to serve,” she said. Wayne Benz of Burnsville is a volunteer who has been donating his time to DARTS for nearly eight years. Benz said that helping others, especially older citizens, has been more rewarding to him than those he is helping.

“It is nothing that takes a lot of my time. It turned out to be extremely rewarding,” Benz said of his thoughts shortly after contacting the nonprofit to become a volunteer. For Benz, volunteering time to help elder citizens in his community is another way he can give back to his community. His parents live too far from home for him to help, so Benz said this is the next best thing he can do. In the past eight years, Benz has helped several older adults year-round, not just during the winter, and about each of his “friends” – not clients – Benz said there has never been a dull moment while visiting people he has been assigned to. “Quite honestly, it was more rewarding for me,” he said. According to Benz, he enjoys listening to those he visits, often hearing what he described as “fascinating” stories. With reference his first assignment, Benz said he very interested in hearing about the woman’s life, one that spanned more than 90 years. Benz said although she grew up in Aitkin, a town of fewer than 2,200 residents at the 2010 census, she lived an exciting and interesting life. She – Helen – moved to New York and even Norway.

She was a gospel singer and once recorded a CD. “She even sang for the King of Norway,” Benz said. Barb Tiggemann, manager of volunteer resources, much time is taken to ensure that good matches are made between volunteers and elders in need. “I work with the service coordinators who actually go out and visit these older adults who are requesting a visitor,” she said. “What I do is match a volunteer who would help meet those needs of that older adult and then also match the needs of the volunteer.” According to Tiggemann, cold weather typically produces more requests for assistance, but that does not mean volunteers are not needed year-round. “I think one of the things I see is as the weather gets colder, especially here, we tend to get those requests more,” she said. She added that the visits are more about engaging the seniors in the community. “Most visiting requests tend to be not just staying in the home and visiting with them, and providing some conversation and some socialization, it’s also to get them out in the community.”

health and wellness that will be used by its physical education department. “I didn’t think we’d actually have a chance but when we found out, it was amazing,” said eighth-grader Stefany Monson. “It was such a surprise because there were such other big middle schools around us. My reaction was extremely happy and surprised and excited all at the same time.” Paideia was one of the more than 1,200 Minnesota schools that applied for the grant by showing off their NFL team spirit at a Back to Football Friday celebration Sept. 9. The school submitted photos of its celebration event and sent in an essay on the importance of health and wellness to the school. The Leadership Team, led by language arts teacher Anne Simon, coordinated the school’s contest efforts by supplying teachers with health and wellness information that was taught throughout the week leading up to the Sept. 9 event. The team, comprised of 22 seventhand eighth-grade students, organized a school-wide photo that was submitted to the NFL. The photo included the school’s 396 K-8 students and faculty members decked out in NFL and other sports jerseys, Simon said. Eighth-grade student Selena Rosario said she considered Paideia a long shot to win the contest. “Because we’re such a small school, everybody thought it was a one in a million chance to get picked,” said Selena, a Leadership Team member. “But we did get picked and it feels really good.” Simon said she also tried to reign in her student’s expectations. “When we started doing this … I preemptively said to my students, ‘This is kind of a long shot,’” said Simon. Selena said she was caught off guard when the announcement was made that Paideia won. “I was in gym class and they announced it over the speaker and everyone was really excited,” Selena said. “We didn’t expect this to happen.” The school-wide reaction was not a subdued cheer. “You could just hear echoes down the hallway,” Simon said. Stefany initially thought the announcement was a ploy to let the students down easy, not an actual affirmation that the school won the contest. “I asked the teachers if it was actually happening, and they said, ‘Yes, it FOOTBALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Football FROM PREVIOUS PAGE was,” Stefany said. By winning, Paideia will host an NFL Team Celebration Dec. 12, which will be attended by five Vikings players, Simon said. The school does not know which Vikings will make an appearance, but Simon is hoping the team’s star players will attend. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed for some big namers and for some players that the kids have on the backs of

their jerseys,” Simon said. Selena and Stefany named names they want to see at the celebration. “Adrian Peterson,” Selena said. “I hope he comes.” Stefany also said she hopes Peterson makes an appearance, as well as defensive end Jared Allen. “They’re kind of the star players of the team,” Stefany said. The players that do attend will engage in a question-and-answer session during an all-school assembly and will lead a small group of students in a gym lesson, Simon said. “They’ll get to interact with the players and have some physical activity,”

Simon said. The school will likely use the grant money to buy a climbing wall for the school gym and to help fund after school sports programs such as volleyball and baseball, Simon said. The school does not have the facilities to host other schools for afterschool sports games, but the grant money may enable Paideia to expand it sports programs, Simon said. “Hopefully from there we can get our students to play other schools,” said Simon. Stefany would like to see the grant money used for a hardwood gym floor and a climbing rope. She also supports

the idea to purchase and install a climbing wall. While Simon thought Paideia’s small stature would hinder its ability to win, it appears that actually helped its cause. “I think the fact that we’re a smaller school, it’s such a small-knit community, we were able to interact school wide,” said Simon. “We’re ridiculously excited and looking forward to see the whole thing get under way. We’re hoping this will be a good way to shine a light on us.” For more information, visit paideiaacademy.org

Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid symptoms. It will be held on Wednesday, November 16th at 7:00 PM. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!

Wind turbine FROM PAGE 1 wind energy research using data collected from the 2.5 megawatt wind turbine and meteorological tower, said Jeffrey Marr, Associate Director of Applied Research at the university’s St. Anthony Falls Laboratory in Minneapolis. This project aims to provide research that will help further the national goal of having 20 percent of all electricity generated by wind power by 2030, Marr said. “The goal of this consortium is trying to move us toward this 2030 goal, Marr said. Marr worked with the project’s principal investigator and project director Fotis Sotiropoulos, who is also a university professor, to write the grant application. Research at the new wind station will focus on capturing more energy from the wind, improving wind farm design, minimizing the turbine’s impact on radar, reducing noise, preventing ice build-up on the blades, monitoring turbine performance and improving turbine blade structure. “It’s not just a turbine, but it’s a research site, Marr said. “It’s a very unique research site. We’re very lucky in Minnesota and Dakota County to have that facility. The wind turbine will be connected to the local grid and will supply electricity to local residents. “When running at its maximum capacity, this turbine could produce enough electricity for 600 to 800 homes depending on the time of year, said Marr. The turbine will be routinely taken off line to conduct sensor and materials analyses. On average, the turbine will be in operation about 70 percent of the time with downtime associated with low wind, maintenance or research activi-

ties, Marr said. The weather tower is located to the south of the wind turbine and will measure wind speeds and weather conditions. “The tower has extra sensors to understand how the turbines move,â€? Marr said. “The data that comes off this site is very special and is very desirable for U.S. and others‌and ultimately, this is all about lowering the cost of using electricity.â€? The city of Rosemount recently announced long-term plans to develop the property at UMore Park. Plans envision a “community of the futureâ€? that would incorporate advances in urban planning and energy conservation and that could be home to 20,000-30,000 people in the next 30 years, according to the city. “The city of Rosemount is very supportive of that kind of work and it is very consistent with the goals of development of UMore,â€? said Kim Lindquist, community development director for the city. The public commissioning for the wind station was Oct. 25 at UMore Park. Marr said roughly 300 people attended the ceremony, which included representatives from the university, the city of Rosemount, wind industries, the DOE, and local schools students and staff. “It was a big celebration,â€? Give to the Max Day Nov. 16 at Dakota Technical College

Garlough teacher award $1,500 grant to promote gardening

Dakota County Technical College will be participating in GiveMN.org’s Give to the Max Day to help raise dollars for student scholarships on Wednesday, Nov. 16. This is not only a great opportunity to raise funds for students in need, but DCTC also has the opportunity to match gifts dollar for dollar up to $5,000 during Give to the Max Day. As people consider their charitable end-of-year giving, they are welcome to participate in this event. To participate, follow any of these steps: 1. Visit the Dakota County Technical College Foundation on GiveMN.org and become a fan of the page. 2. Set up an event reminder for Give to the Max Day on Nov. 16. 3. Share this information with others interested in supporting student scholarships at DCTC. 4. Visit the Dakota County Technical College Foundation page on GiveMN.org on Nov. 16 to make a gift to be matched dollar for dollar up to $5,000. GiveMN.org will also be offering other prize opportunities to organizations participating that day, including $1,000 Golden Tickets to a random donor’s charity every hour.

Kristie Cummings, second grade teacher at Garlough Environmental Magnet School in West St. Paul, was awarded a grant for $1,500 to promote gardening with students. The grant was from Vlasic through the Kids Gardening organization, and provided Cummings with teacher resources, a grow lab, kidsized gardening tools, a raised garden bed, and a compost bin. Ninety second-grade students helped install the school’s new garden box and compost bin, and have been participating in gardening activities this fall. The items provided by this grant will serve the school in numerous ways. The grow lab will be used to extend the short growing season in the state, the kid-size tools will make it comfortable for students to garden, the compost bin will helps students understand plant life cycles and how to improve soil economically and the teacher resources provide strategies to make information available and manageable for students. “Many of my students have never gardened and have not been aware of where their food comes from,” said Cummings. “By having the hands-on experience of growing produce, caring for their garden and eating what they grow, my students have greater understanding of the world they live in, how they are connected to their environment and the importance of taking care of it.” Info: isd197.org

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Debunking diet myths topic of library speaker Ann Rosenstein, author of “Diet Myths Busted: Food Facts, Not Nutrition Fiction,” will discuss basic concepts of nutrition and fitness 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, Heritage Library, 20085 Heritage Drive, Lakeville. The event is free and open to everyone. As a certified fitness instructor and personal trainer for more than 20 years, Rosenstein knows many people are confused about exercise and nutrition. Ten

years of research went into her book, which addresses misinformation about food and how it relates to burning calories and losing weight. Info: 651-450-2918.

AV resident earns Play Therapy credential Apple Valley resident Cynthia Peterson recently earned the prestigious registered play therapist credential conferred by the Association for Play Therapy.

Peterson is a licensed psychologist. To become a registered play therapist, applicants must have earned a traditional master’s or doctoral mental health degree, clock 150 hours of play therapy training, two years and 2,000 hours of clinical experience, 500 hours of supervised play therapy experience and be licensed or certified by their state boards of practice. Play therapy continues to gain popularity as an effective modality by which licensed mental health professionals use developmentally appropriate play therapy theories and techniques to better com-

municate with and help clients, especially children. Play therapy is particularly effective with children because, just as adults use words to communicate ideas and feelings, children use play. APT is a national professional society formed in 1982 to advance the field of play therapy. It sponsors research, training, and credentialing programs to assist the professional development of its nearly 6,000 member psychologists, social workers, counselors, and marriage and family therapists in more than 25 nations. Loss to Eden Prairie in Class AA boys soccer final ends Eastview’s undefeated run BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS There’s no good time to lose, but last week Eastview’s boys soccer players had to deal with losing at the worst possible moment – when there’s no opportunity to make up for it. “We put on a good show for the fans,” senior captain Brennan Espinda Banick said, trying to find a positive aspect to the Lightning’s 3-1 loss to Eden Prairie in the state Class AA final. Eastview, of course, went to the Metrodome on Nov. 3 wanting to do more than put on a good show. It hoped to cap an undefeated season with the school’s first state soccer title. But when Eden Prairie scored 3 minutes, 47 seconds into the game, it left the Lightning scrambling for an equalizer that never came. The Eagles added two more goals in the final two minutes before Eastview junior Mathew Gweh prevented a shutout by scoring with 40 seconds remaining. Eden Prairie’s first goals “was kind of a wakeup call for us,” Eastview coach Scott Gustafson said. “We haven’t been down much this season. I think we went down a goal in two other games.” The Eastview coach said his team had difficulty matching Eden Prairie’s energy. “I don’t think we had our legs going at the start,” he said. “We went through a lot of energy on Tuesday [when the Lightning defeated Minneapolis Southwest in the state semifinals]. Eden Prairie is a good team that went on a nice run at the end of the season.” Eden Prairie (16-3-3), which finished third in the five-team Lake Conference, won its final nine games. “I was worried until we got our second goal,” Eden Prairie coach Vince Thomas said. “Eastview has so much firepower. They can score a goal at any moment.” Eastview (20-1-1) got some positive news when junior goalkeeper Sam Ruelas was cleared to play. Ruelas had to come out late in the Southwest game

just a shot-stopper, but I’m encouraging and organizing the defense.” Eventually, the Lightning will find many more positives than negatives in its state tournament run, Gustafson said. “We’re in a situation where guys are upset about losing the last game,” the coach said. “But we’ve had an amazing amount of support from our school. We had 1,000 students here for [the semifinal game against Minneapolis Southwest] and 1,400 here today. “Now we’re going to hop on a bus, go back to Eastview and celebrate with our fans.”

Pretty good, could have been better. That’s what Danielle Anderson thought individually and Eagan thought collectively of their performances at the state Class AA girls cross country meet. Anderson placed eighth at the Nov. 5 state meet at St. Olaf College and earned All-State recognition for the second consecutive year. After coming into the meet ranked third in Class AA, Eagan placed ninth in the tem competition. The two teams ranked ahead of the Wildcats, Monticello and Lakeville South, finished first and second. If the Wildcats return to state next year – and eight of their top nine runners will be back – they will benefit from having been there this year, coach Lisa Langenhahn said. “We knew there would be tough competition here,” Langenhahn said. “We ran tough the whole day. If we get here next year, we’ll have experience. We only had two girls who had ever run at state before, Danielle [Anderson] and Alanna [Stangl].” Anderson cut almost 30 seconds off her time from last year’s state meet, finishing in 14 minutes, 39.3 seconds. Her goal was to finish in the top five, but she said she was satisfied with her effort. “I was going to try to pick it up at 1 1/2 miles, but I didn’t feel that well at the time,” she said. “So I picked it up at 2 miles.” Shakopee’s Maria Hauger and Alexandria’s Jamie Piepenburg broke away from the pack. Hauger passed Piepenburg just before the finish line to win her third consecutive state championship in 14:04.1.

If Ruelas was unable to play, sophomore Treston Kederer would have taken over in goal. Kederer saw action in 14 games this season, including the Lightning’s victory over Rochester Mayo in the state quarterfinals. But if Ruelas was healthy, he was going to get the start after what Gustafson called “an amazing game, probably one of the best by a goalkeeper all season,” against Southwest. Except for the injury, the Southwest game was “a lot of fun,” Ruelas said. “I like being in a position where I’m not

Blaze cross country takes a shot at the title BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS The popular assumption going into the state Class AA boys cross country meet was that it was Stillwater’s to lose. But at least one other team wasn’t buying it. “To be honest, we thought we could win,” Burnsville coach Jeff Webber said. “That was our expectation. And we were close.” How close? There were several ways the Blaze could have made up the 23-point difference between itself and Stillwater at the Nov. 5 state meet in Northfield. The easiest might have been for its No. 5 runner to finish 32 seconds faster, which would have been a 24-place improvement. Easier said than done, though. In the end, finishing second at a meet for which it barely qualified had to be considered a good result. The Blaze runners were pleased, but not necessarily satisfied. “I think we can still train harder and run better,” said Burnsville senior Cole O’Brien, who had his third consecutive individual top-five finish at state. Burnsville has at least one more meet left this season. The Blaze is one of four Minnesota teams expected to compete in

the Nike Regionals in Sioux Falls, S.D., this weekend. Burnsville’s first four runners finished in the top 13 among those in the team competition. O’Brien (third among team competition runners, fifth overall) and Abdullahi Salan (seventh, 18th) are veterans of the state meet. The next two Blaze runners, ninthgrader Faysol Mamoud and Ali Ahmed, are in their first year of competitive cross country. “They’re the most talented runners I’ve ever seen,” O’Brien said of Mamoud and Ahmed. “Faysol doesn’t even know how much talent he has,” Salan said, “and he hates running 5,000 meters.” At the Section 3AA meet, Burnsville’s top four runners all placed in the top 10. That helped the Blaze place second in the section, edging an Eastview that had five finishers in the top 18. The top two teams in each section advanced to the state meet. O’Brien, who Webber said has been trying to shake an illness for a couple of weeks, finished fifth overall in 15 minutes, 46.3 seconds. He was Class AA runner-up last year and fourth at state as a sophomore.

Salan was next for Burnsville in 16:06.7, and his 18th-place finish earned him All-State recognition. Mamoud was 12th among runners in the team competition and 27th overall in 16:13.9. One place behind was Ahmed, who finished in 16:14.2. Junior Shawn Wong was 80th among team competition runners in 17:33.1. Sam Houching (18:12.5) and Jake Stevens (18:13.4) also ran for the Blaze. It was Burnsville’s fourth consecutive trip to the state meet and its third straight top-four finish. Webber said he is convinced the Blaze can go back to state next year, despite graduating its top two runners. “Get that out of your mind,” Webber told his runners about the upcoming graduation losses. “We can be even better next year. It can happen.”

Irish finish fourth South Suburban Conference and Section 3AA boys champion Rosemount went into the Class AA meet ranked fifth in the state. The Irish left with a fourthplace finish. Nathan Rock, a senior, finished 21st overall and ninth among runners in the

team competition. His time was 16:10 and he earned All-State recognition. Rock matched his finish at the 2010 state meet. Trevor Capra (23rd among team competition runners, 16:27.8), Calvin Lehn (30th, 16:31.8), Nick Couillard (31st, 16:32.6) and Chandler Dye (39th, 16:48.8) also counted toward the Irish’s team score of 132 points, three behind third-place Edina. Stillwater (92) and Burnsville (115) were the top two teams. Tyler Blumke (16:47.4) and Sam Ivanecky (17:23.7) also ran at state for Rosemount. It was Rosemount’s fourth state meet in six years, and the Irish have finished fourth or higher each time.

Boys meet notes • Eastview junior Nick Oelke, a firsttime state qualifier ran 16:06 at state to finish 15th and make the All-State team. • Eagan junior Sidney Speir was 17th in 16:06.4 and also earned All-State honors. He was 53rd at the 2010 Class AA meet. • Trinity at River Ridge senior Charlie Leighton was 45th in the Class A boys meet in 17:15.1.

Cretin-Derham runs Wildcats out of playoffs Raiders run for 410 yards in section championship game BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Cretin-Derham Hall is Minnesota’s cradle of quarterbacks, which tends to make people forget the Raiders also can roll out a potent running attack. Eagan won’t have any trouble remembering, not after Cretin-Derham churned out 410 yards on the ground in a 31-12 victory in the Class 5A, Section 4 football championship game. The Raiders completed only two passes in the Nov. 4 game at the University of St. Thomas, although one did go for a touchdown. Mostly, their running game made life miserable for the Wildcats’ defense. “I don’t think we tackled as well as we have, but it wasn’t for lack of effort,” Eagan coach Rick Sutton said. “Their running backs are physical. They were a little more physical than we were tonight.” Cretin-Derham Hall junior James Onwualu didn’t have a carry until the second quarter but finished with 214 yards on 15 attempts. He had touchdown runs of 87 and 26 yards as well as a 48-yard reception

for another score. Eagan tried to keep pace but had trouble with drives fizzling in CDH territory. “We had the ball at their 30 three times and didn’t score,” Sutton said. The key sequence took place early in the third quarter. The Wildcats, trailing 106 at halftime, got a jolt when Aaron Roundtree returned the second-half kickoff 65 yards to the Cretin-Derham 25. From there, Eagan backed up 8 yards and had to punt. On Cretin-Derham’s next snap, Onwualu ran off-tackle and, after passing the line of scrimmage, cut back and was gone on an 87-yard run that essentially blew the Wildcats’ section championship hopes to pieces. Eagan quarterback Drew Bauer ran 68 yards on an option keeper for the Wildcats’ first touchdown in the second quarter. In the third, he threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Eric Woodcock that cut the CDH lead to 24-12. Early in the fourth, still trailing 24-12, Eagan drove to the Raiders’ 33 but lost the ball on downs. Bauer gained 99 yards on 17 carries and completed 14 of 26 passes for 198 yards. Roundtree led the Eagan receivers with four catches for 69 yards. Cretin-Derham Hall is a long-time Eagan playoff stumbling block. The

Wildcats have lost to the Raiders in the section tournament the last three years. Next year the teams will be in different sections in the new Class 6A, although they could conceivably meet as early as the second round of the playoffs. For now, South Suburban Conference champion Lakeville North gets the next shot at Cretin-Derham Hall. The two teams, both 10-0, meet in the Class 5A quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the Metrodome. Eagan players remained on the UST field long after the final whistle to come to terms with the end of their season. The Wildcats overcame an 0-3 start to finish with a winning record (6-5). They won the four games preceding their loss to Cretin-Derham by a combined 172-36. “At the start of the year we were pretty young and inexperienced,” Sutton said. “We also played some tough competition, but we learned from it. “From that point on, all we talked about was the process of getting better every day, every week. And we made as big an improvement from the beginning of the year to the end of the year as I’ve seen.”

Prior Lake 27, Eastview 7 Prior Lake broke a 7-7 tie with three sec-

ond-half touchdowns to win the Class 3A, Section 3 championship and earn the school’s first trip to the state playoffs. Prior Lake is one of two South Suburban Conference schools – Lakeville North is the other – to win section championships. Both advance to the state Class 5A quarterfinals and will be part of a doubleheader at the Metrodome on Friday, Nov. 11. Lakeville North plays Cretin-Derham Hall at 5 p.m., with Prior Lake playing Totino-Grace at 8. Eastview (5-6) was stopped short of its fifth state playoff appearance. The second half had a promising start for the Lightning when it recovered a Prior Lake onside kick and moved inside the Lakers’ 20-yard line. But the drive stalled, the Lightning lost the ball on downs, and the Lakers took over. Prior Lake had more than 280 rushing yards. Trailing 7-0 late in the second quarter, Eastview tied the game on a 54-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Reger to Amare Kennedy. Despite going 3-5 in the regular season, the Lightning reached the section final with a come-from-behind 14-7 victory over Burnsville in the first round of the section playoffs and a 49-13 blowout of No. 1-seeded Rosemount in the semifinals.

Eagan runners start their journey at the state Class AA girls cross country meet. The Wildcats finished ninth and junior Danielle Anderson (131) took eighth place individually. (Photo by Mike Shaughnessy – Sun Newspapers)

Cross country FROM PAGE 23 Anderson decided not to try to go with Hauger and Piepenburg. “After those two, there was a pack of about eight of us,” she said. “I decided to stay with them and see if I could finish ahead of them.” Anderson was seventh among runners in the team competition. The rest of Eagan’s top five consisted of ninth-grader Anna Van Wyk (39th, 15:29.7), Stangl (45th, 15:36.5), sophomore Reilly Hostager (58th, 15:48.9) and sophomore Raissa Hansen (63rd, 15:54.8). Two ninth-graders, Kelli Praska (16:01.2) and Karina Johnson (16:02.7), were 71st and 74th among runners in the team competition. “There are so many runners, so much pressure, it makes it hard to run together,” Anderson said. Lakeville South is a similarly young team and finished first to Eagan’s second at the South Suburban Conference meet in October. “We have girls who will work hard, and

I think we’ll be a better team next year,” Anderson said. As for herself, “I’d like to get back to state and be one of the top three runners,” she said. “It’s been a goal of mine since the beginning of last season.”

Girls cross country notes • Rosemount sent two individuals to the state girls meet. Ninth-grader Liz Evenocheck finished 57th in 15:22.5 and sophomore Hannah Grim was 122nd in 16:05.4. Grim ran at state last year when Rosemount’s girls team qualified. It was Evenocheck’s first appearance at state. • Burnsville sophomore Vivian Hett, runner-up to Eagan’s Danielle Anderson in the Section 3AA meet, finished 40th at state in 15:12.8. It was an improvement of 28 seconds and 38 places over her finish at the 2010 Class AA meet. • Trinity at River Ridge finished 11th in the Class A girls team standings. Ninthgrader Mary Ennis finished 33rd among runners in the team competition in 16:03.2. Lotus Schifsky (41st), Lucy Leighton (43rd), Ruthie Gross (59th), Maria Kraker (71st), Marie Stephenson (79th) and Katie Stephenson (102nd) also ran for Trinity.

State tournament notes • Ruelas, Gweh, defender Michael Bonderud and senior forward Joe Karam were named to the all-tournament team. • Seniors on the Lightning roster are Espinda Banick, Karam, defender Arshan Tarapore, midfielder Matt Miller, forward Zeadd Rashed and defender Kevin Herro. • In addition to the seniors, the

Lightning is expected to lose underclassmen Gweh, Ruelas, Kederer and Bonderud, who will continue to study at Eastview but plan to train with the Minnesota Thunder Academy next year. The Thunder Academy is starting a program for potential elite players that will conflict with the high school season. When asked if the loss in the state championship game would cause any of the other underclassmen to reconsider, Gustafson said he didn’t want to speculate. He had said previously it was unlikely any of the four would change their minds.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

PREGNANT? CONSIDERING ADOPTION? You choose from families nationwide. LIVING EXPENSES PAID. Abby's One True Gift Adoptions. 866-4136292, 24/7

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Process mail! Pay weekly! Free supplies! Bonuses! Genuine opportunity! Start immediately! Helping Homeworkers since 1992. 1-888-302-1516. www.howtowork-fromhome.com

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
