Injecting new blood into the ‘Heart of the Zoo’ Phase one of Minnesota Zoo revitalization project completed this summer BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS People who went to the Minnesota Zoo this summer saw firsthand the culmination of years of planning for its “Heart of the Zoo” project. Those who have not been to the zoo in years will be surprised by the work done during the project’s first phase. The first phase had three components and cost $14 million, said Chris Gibbs, arts, community and education principal with HGA Architects and Engineers. The zoo and HGA began planning for the project nearly four years ago. It finished this past July after 16 months of construction. The main entrance was transformed from a concrete structure to a wood and stone building. The zoo added its now-popular penguin exhibit and its empty whale pools were reused for a theater and community event space. Zoo guests will see the changes before they enter the grounds, said Gibbs, a Plymouth resident. This extension of the zoo outside the grounds is part of its mission. “It was a little aged based on how long the zoo’s been around,” said

Gibbs of the concrete entrance. “It was built in the ’70s and was kept well, but it was just a little harsh and I think the zoo wanted to soften that a little bit and portray their brand of connecting people in the natural world out into the zoo.” The walk up to the entrance now has a more zoo-like feel, Gibbs said, thanks to new landscaping. Lowlying shrubs and prairie grasses – some native to Minnesota – line the walkways and lead zoo guests to the lower level entrance. “We added an awful lot of landscaping,” he said. “We really made that visitor experience a much better moment starting even out in the parking lot. It feels like you’re walking through a garden now, where before it was like walking on a sidewalk.” Bison and wolf sculptures outside the entrance have been huge attractions for photo opportunities for zoo guests, said Minnesota Zoo Director and CEO Lee Ehmke. “It starts to tell that zoo story even as people are waiting in line,” Gibbs added regarding the new sculptures. Secondly, the old theater was converted to the new Penguins of the

African Coast exhibit, one of the most popular summer exhibits, said Ehmke. “For most people, the most notable change is the penguin exhibit,” he said. “We’ve never had penguins at the zoo. Kids can climb up on boulders and be nose-to-nose with the penguins on their beach. The penguins are certainly the new focus.” MINNESOTA ZOO: TO PAGE 9 CALL TODAY FOR A FREE FAMILY LAW CONSULTATION

Student enrollment going up, going down in District 196 Enrollment projected to increase in 2012, and then decline until 2016 BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Student enrollment in the RosemountApple Valley-Eagan School District is projected to increase slightly in 2012 and then slowly decline four years afterwards. But, the eventual expected decline is minimal, said District 196 Student Information Director Kim Reis at the Nov. 28 school board meeting. The current district enrollment as of Oct. 1 is 27,404 students and by 2016, the district estimates it will have 27,337, a difference of 67. Though district officials stated at the Nov. 28 meeting that enrollment projections show a decrease of 16 students in 2012, public documents reveal an increase of 16 students to 27,420. Next year, the district estimates an increase at the elementary and middle school level, but a decrease at the high school level. For Oct. 1, 2012, the district projects

11,566 elementary students, an increase of 89 (.76 percent). The 2012 middle school level projection shows 6,002 students, an increase of 21 (.35 percent) and the high schools projection estimates a student enroll- Jackie ment of 8,037, a decrease Magnuson of 50 (.62 percent). “Not a lot of change,” said Reis at the meeting. That totals 25,605 students at the Kindergarten through grade 12 levels. The enrollment projections from the School of Environmental Studies, Adult Learning Center, Adult Basic Education, Dakota Ridge, the Center-based Special Education and Early Childhood Special Education added to that total is 27,420 students for 2012. Reis noted that the highest district student enrollment was eight years ago. “Our highest enrollment was in [the] 2003-04 school year and we have been declining ever since, though much more slowly now than we were at first.” Reis said. She added that the district has been

successful at getting new students to enroll, which offsets the disparity in those first enrolling and those graduating. “Our difference between our exiting seniors and our incoming kindergarten is actually quite large,” Reis said. “But, enough people move into the district that it offsets quite a bit. So, we are not nearly as low as that would have us appear.” The district uses two models for projecting enrollment numbers. First, it conducts its own census report. “We try to do 100 percent census,” Reis said. “We try to know who lives in every house in the district as best that we can whether they have children or not.” Historically, the districts figures in any new housing developments to determine future projections, said Reis. It tracks all of district developments by census area to know which elementary, middle and high schools those students will attend. This method looks at the current student population and projects it forward, Reis said. The second method looks at historical enrollment for each of the buildings, which it projects into the future.

“We have a group, an enrollment projections committee, that looks at the assumptions that are made in each of those two methods and looks at all of the different mathematical models that can be used and comes up with the best assumptions for next year,” Reis said. From there, the committee reviews the results from each of those models and make a recommendation to the cabinet. Reis said the district is aware of where future growth will occur within its borders – near the gravel pits and UMore Park in Rosemount – but no new developments are in the works. “We do expect that there’s going to be growth on the east side and the south side of the district,” said Reis. “Our tricky thing right now is there’s nothing going on out there and we don’t know when that’s going to start.” “When you drive around the district, there are a lot places that if the economy turned around, it could pop over night and we could have tons more houses,” said School Board Chairperson Jackie Magnuson. “We know exactly where that is, we just don’t know when,” Reis responded. “That’s what we’re waiting for.”

To city and school elected officials: Thank you An elected official once apologized to me for not returning a phone call because she was visiting a family member who was battling cancer. The only appropriate response to that is, “What I called about doesn’t really matter. I wish you the best.” Did I say that? No, because I’m some jerk reporter who has to ask some question because I signed up to be on this end of the phone. She didn’t have to be on the other end. And she apologized. Local elected officials are not thanked enough. They spend a lot of time outside of their full-time jobs and away from families. They sort through issues that you don’t have to worry about. The majority of their time is spent doing thankless, unrecognized work. So, thank you. And thank you to your families. They’re paid, but it’s not much. Not in Eden Prairie, anyway. They have to communicate complicated processes without sounding like they’re being wishy-washy or hiding something.

PAUL GROESSEL Eden Prairie Community Editor

They know they might get quoted or misquoted in the newspaper at any time. They answer emails. They sit down for one-on-one conversations with people who want to talk about a concern. I don’t think they get many phone calls from people who want to have coffee just to say thanks or just to shoot the breeze. There’s usually a problem or topic that must be worked out. That goes for the press, especially. A lot of their elected duties are outside of the regular school board or city council meeting. They have subcommittee (or subcommittees) that come with the gig. They go to well-known, well-attended public events and not-sowell-known events like a ribbon cutting or open house. When they make big decisions or a “what if ” happens, their schedule gets even more hectic – the city needs to hire

a new city manager; the school board needs to hire a new superintendent. Many people don’t even know who is in the respective seat and what the person in that chair is responsible for. That hiring process means finding a search firm, a selection process itself. Then, they have extra meetings with the search firm to set up more meetings to find out what the most important criteria in a candidate should be, and what are the most important functions and priorities of the city or schools before they can weed through all the applicants and choose who they’ll select for the first – first! – round of interviews ... See? You’re falling asleep already. You know what, though – we don’t care. We don’t think about that. We don’t think about what elected officials do on a daily or weekly basis. We don’t think about how much time it takes from their family. We just know where the city council will be when we want to complain about tax rates, our water bill or the city spending more money than it needed on lug nut that

holds up a sign (which is probably too close to the road under the zoning code) at a public building. And you know what – they’ll let you come tell them about it. They invite it, the crazy people. We can do the same with the school board. In Eden Prairie, board members attend multiple events, are on a couple committees and often spend time looking up supplemental information on certain topics. They set aside times to have anyone come talk to the board about anything school related. No, we don’t have to agree with an elected official. Not every politician is the same; not everyone is as committed as another, and things aren’t always done with great intentions. Honest mistakes do happen. We should ask questions and make sure things are running as they should be. But, at the least, when we do question and pry it’s good to keep in mind how much time they put in and how little they’re recognized before firing off questions. Thanks for doing a thankless job.

This is the one thing she really looked forward to doing each year. Yes, she lives in an apartment complex and has won the light contests in the past. Was this the work of someone who was jealous of her decorating or someone out there who is anti-Christmas? Wonder how they would feel if it happened to them? This was years of buying and saving the decorations and now they are useless. Barb Edlund Eagan

Let’s say ‘thanks’ to our representatives

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Someone cut the cord on Christmas lights To the editor: My daughter, a single mom with two teenage sons, enjoys decorating her patio for the holidays. She is on a budget and tries to pickup new decorations at season’s end. She started putting up her lights on Thanksgiving morning. After working all day on Friday she

planned to continue with the decorating. However, someone had vandalized all of her decorations. Not stealing them but cutting the cords right at the plugs. This looked like it had been done with a wire cutter or scissors. They even left the plugs on the ground. She was just sick at the thought that anyone would be so intent on doing this. We figured it had to be an adult as it was done with some premeditation. The police were contacted.

To the editor: I want to extend my gratitude and heartfelt thanks to state Reps. (Doug) Wardlow, (Diane) Anderson and state Sen. (Ted) Daley for their year of service. I want to say thank you for LETTER: TO PAGE 9

Minnesota Zoo FROM PAGE 1 The location of the penguin exhibit, along with the remodeled entrance, has made navigating the zoo easier, Ehmke said. “It’s much clearer what the options are,” he said. “You can go immediately outdoors – left to Discovery Bay, right to the penguin [exhibits]. So, we’re bringing people right to the middle of the zoo.” The third part of the project converted two outdated and empty whale pools to house the zoo’s bird show and host community events. The whale pools had not been used since Discovery Bay opened in 1998, Ehmke said. Gibbs said he couldn’t recall who came up with the idea to re-use the abandoned whale tanks. But, with representatives from the zoo, HGA and exhibit designers present at a planning meeting, it was certainly collaboration. “It was one of those ‘Ah ha!” moments,” Gibbs said. “It’s safe to say it was a team effort because everyone was in the room. I’m sure of that.” Future phases in the “Heart of the Zoo” project are scheduled to include

new exhibits, as well as moving the main entrance to the upper level parking area. Ehmke hopes that future projects will enhance its visitors’ trips beyond the parking lot. An idea a couple years from fruition includes a prairie exhibit along Zoo Boulevard. “We’d love it if you were seeing some bison up on the hill as you were coming in looking for a place to park,” Ehmke said. “Again, starting that zoo experience as soon as possible is our goal.” Gibbs said he would love to work with the zoo on future phases of “Heart of the Zoo.” He feels confident that HGA’s work on phase one was in line with the zoo’s mission. “I think the zoo is always looking at ways to connect animals in the natural world to people,” Gibbs said. “I think this project frankly does that and increases their opportunity to do that. I think at the end of the days it’s allowing them to reach more people with their story.” Ehmke said the project has transformed the Minnesota Zoo into a world-class facility. “My feeling is that Heart of the Zoo has tipped the balance and most of the zoo is feeling new, and refreshed and state of the art. This is the project that brought us up to the level we wanted.”

Letter FROM PAGE 6 their assisting with shutting down the government. I want to thank them for giving tax breaks for people who make more than a million dollars. I want to say thank you for attempting to take women’s right away but not a man’s. I want to say thank you for working to close down homeless shelters and put people out on the streets. I want to say thank you for standing with the big banks and seeing people kicked out of their homes.

I want to say thank you for not standing up for gay or lesbian military people who keep us safe. I want to say thank you for working to criminalize unions that include firemen and women, teachers and someone that could be your neighbor. I can go on and on with all my thanks but the item that I am most thankful for is the fact that our representatives did not create jobs and they chose not to work with folks across the aisle. EDUCATION Elizabeth “Beth” Larson Elizabeth “Beth” Larson, age 52, of rural Blanchardville, WI, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2011, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born September 22, 1959, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of George and Catherine (Kenney) Frey. Elizabeth graduated from Harvard High School in Harvard, IL, in 1977 and from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a double major in Journalism and Political Science in 1981. She was united in marriage to Stephen Larson on April 17, 1982, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Argyle, WI. Elizabeth truly enjoyed working as a teaching assistant in a special needs classroom at Black Hawk Middle School in Eagan, MN, for over 10 years. She was pursuing a Master’s Degree in Special Education before her most recent battle with cancer. Elizabeth and Steve enjoyed living in homes in Wauwatosa, WI, Alpharetta, GA, Duluth, GA, Eagan, MN, and finally returning to Blanchardville in May of 2010. Elizabeth is survived by her husband: Steve at home; three children: Amy Larson of Milwaukee, WI, Zachary Larson of Mankato, MN, and Nicholas Larson of St. Paul, MN; her parents: George and Catherine Frey of Argyle; one brother: George (Sue) Frey of Muskego, WI; three sisters: Margaret (Steve) Zoellner of East Troy, WI, Joanne (Gary) Eisenzimmer of Mineral Point, WI, and Kate (Greg) Peterson of Blanchardville; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents. Elizabeth was an active member in her community and beloved by many. She was a founding member of School District #196 Heartstrings Committee, which worked to provide education and support to families with special needs children. Elizabeth was a treasured volunteer at her local schools, Relay for Life, and taught religious education for many years. She loved spending time with her family and friends, traveling, walking her dog Rudy, watching sports, and working in her beautiful flower gardens. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 3, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 213 North Lafayette Street in Argyle with Rev. David Wanish officiating. A visitation will be held Friday, December 2, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the church where a rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Reflections and memories of Elizabeth will be shared beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory in Argyle is serving the family. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com. For those who prefer, a memorial fund has been established in Elizabeth’s name.

ISD 197 audit shows good enrollment growth and fund balance The ISD 197 School Board received good financial news from its financial auditor, James Eichten of Malloy, Montague, Karnowski, Radosevich & Co., PA, at its Monday, Nov. 28, meeting. According to Eichten’s report, the district is headed in the right direction in terms of enrollment growth and is putting more dollars into its savings account. Overall, Eichten offered a clean opinion on the basic financial statements, citing good recordkeeping and financial accounting. The district was cited on a few findings of noncompliance, including segregation of duties, which Eichten said is often found in smaller organizations like District 197. Correcting the finding would require employing additional staff, something the district may not have capacity to do, Eichten said. Eichten said that while there are

some positives, including a modestly growing fund balance and increasing student enrollment, the district should look at the discrepancy of being under metro average with respect to revenue, but above the metro average in expenditures. Eichten said that he has already had conversations with Interim Supt. Tom Nelson and Director of Finance Brian Schultz about this issue and understands it would be looked into as part of the future budget planning. Info: isd197.org.

Enrollment up 142 students in Independent School District 197 Enrollment in ISD 197 is up 142 students compared to last year at this time, according to a report provided to the school board in November. Director of Finance Brian Schultz said that with an increase in enrollment, both revenue and additional expenditures are generated. The growth seems to be coming in

the early years, as illustrated by age progression. The district had 27 more kindergarteners enroll this fall compared to the number of seniors who graduated from high school in 2011. Between 2002-2003 and 2008-2009, the district saw an overall decline in students. But, since the 2009-2010 school year, the district has experienced modest enrollment growth. An increase of 142 students, however, is significant. The district has also had considerable demographic change in its student population in the last ten years. Since 2002-2003, the district’s population of students in poverty, defined by free or reduced lunch status, has nearly doubled. Twenty-three percent of students were considered to be in poverty ten years ago, compared to 43 percent this year. The ethnic makeup of District 197 has also grown from 26 percent of students in 2003 considered to be students of color, to 42 percent in 2012. According to recent census data, the demographic changes do match with changes in the overall district population. Info: isd197.org.

At home – on ice – for the holidays Apple Valley native returns to the Twin Cities for four-day Disney On Ice tour BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS The old saying says you can’t go home. For a former Apple Valley resident, that phrase holds partly true. Katie Lingen, of Cape Creek, Ariz., spent her formative years in Apple Valley. Now, she’s traveling the world as part of the cast of Disney On Ice. Lingen will return to Minnesota as Snow White in “Disney On Ice presents Treasure Trove,” Dec. 8-11, at the Xcel Center in St. Paul. Lingen joined Disney On Ice shortly after graduating from Eastview High School in 2001. She began figure skating at age 4 and was not ready to give up on her passion. “I had graduated from high school and decided I wasn’t done skating,” Lingen said, 28. “I joined and I have been traveling with them ever since.” Since joining Disney On Ice in January 2002, Lingen has traveled the world. Japan, said her mother Rhonda Lingen, has been her favorite destination. But, her journey to joining one of

“She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Luke 2:7, NIV

the most prestigious skating organizations began in her Apple Valley neighborhood. Lingen credits her figure skating start to a friend in her neighborhood who began figure skating and encouraged Lingen to join her. “The minute I got on the ice, I took off and it was super natural for me,” Lingen said. “Ever since then, I fell in love [with it.]” Later, she began skating with the Burnsville Minnesota Valley Figure Skating Club, honing her skills and taking part in their annual shows. One such show might have foreshadowed bigger things to come. “I did guest skating in some shows at the club, which was the basis for all of the skating and my drive,” Lingen said. “One of my favorite memories … was a show where I got to play Sleeping Beauty and I remember that being really awesome.” Around the same time, she saw a Disney On Ice performance with her family. It sparked an interest in skating professionally, though Lingen never thought she would skate in their shows. “I went to a Disney On Ice show and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world and right then I decided it was something I wanted to do,” she said. “I SNOW WHITE: TO PAGE 20

The Eagan Fire Department is seeking help from its residents in reducing fires caused by improperly discarded cigarettes. Fire Chief Mike Scott said the No. 1 cause of fires in Eagan over the past year has been directly related to improperly discarded cigarettes. The common problem is that smokers do not extinguish their cigarettes in a proper container, as well as the regular maintenance of these containers. There have been more than fifteen fires at multi-family and single-family homes in Eagan in 2011 that could have been prevented if smokers would have

invested in an approved device for discarded cigarettes. Most fires caused by cigarettes were because either there was no device at all, or a device that was not designed for disposal of cigarettes. The fire department strongly suggests that smokers and management of multi-family homes and businesses invest in containers that are designed for disposal of cigarettes. The fire department recommends an all-metal device with a long neck that reduces the chance of the wind igniting the discarded cigarette butts. It is also very important to maintain these devices once they are installed. The largest dollar loss for a structure fire in Eagan was at an apartment complex that had the correct containers at the complexes, but the containers were not routinely cleaned and maintained. Snow White FROM PAGE 14 never thought Disney was an option because it seemed so far out of reach.” She left the Burnsville Club when she was 15 and after a yearlong stint at the Bloomington Ice Garden, she began skating at Sports Quest Skating Academy in Minneapolis. Her coach at Sports Quest, Paige Lipe, proved influential in Lingen’s life. “She’s the one who encouraged me to audition for Disney and I fell in love

with it,” Lingen said. But, Lingen credits both Lipe and her coach at the Burnsville skating club, Davina Nelson, for developing her figure skating skills. “They’re the two most influential coaches who helped Katie Lingen me develop my career and my talent,” Lingen said. During her nearly decade long career with Disney On Ice, Lingen has portrayed a variety of characters:

Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” Tinkerbell from “Peter Pan” and Bell from “Beauty and the Beast.” Portraying a well-known Disney character such as Snow White, Lingen said, is a humbling experience. “It’s an honor to portray that role and bring that role to life on ice,” she said. Lingen pointed out that Snow White was the first full-length animated feature released by Disney in 1937. She is one of the oldest Disney characters, but is still loved by kids today. “She’s old, but she’s not,” Lingen said. “Everybody loves her. My 5-yearold niece – that’s her favorite. That’s amazing to me. She’s so classic and iconic.” In addition to her role as Snow White, Lingen currently portrays Wendy from “Peter Pan.” She enjoys the different nuances of playing each character, but finds some common ground between the two. “They both play that motherly role,” Lingen said. Though Lingen has no children of her own, playing that role wasn’t a stretch. “I guess in some ways, yes,” she said about being suited for those characters. “I tend to look out for those around me. It came pretty easy.” The current Disney On Ice tour has stopped at 12 cities thus far and is nearly halfway through its performances, Lingen said. Coming back to Minnesota during the holiday season is special, Lingen said. “I’m super excited to come home. It’s around Christmas time, so that makes it even better to spend the holidays with them,” Lingen said of friends and

family. “I couldn’t ask for a better time.” She credits her parents for taking her to figure skating performances and practices growing up in Apple Valley. “I hauled her all over the place,” said Rhonda Lingen, who also designed and created Katie’s costumes growing up. “We did competitions all the time. It was a big sacrifice for the family because she was very busy.” But now, the family’s hard work has paid off for Katie. “She’s very good at what she does,” said Rhonda. “It’s perfect for her. I’m thrilled for her.” Katie Lingen wouldn’t have it any other way. Skating in front of her parents is the culmination of thousands of hours traveled and hours skated. “It’s the coolest feeling in the world,” she said about performing for her family. “I’m just proud to do it for them. I just want to say thank you to them. Maybe I don’t say it enough.” Rhonda Lingen said her relatives are excited for the upcoming shows and Katie estimates as many as 75 friends and family will be in attendance over the course of the four-show weekend. “I know her grandma and grandpa are very excited,” Rhonda Lingen said. “They don’t get to see her often, so this is a thrill.” As far as the actual show, Katie Lingen said it is geared for both boys and girls. “There’s something about this show that – the audience is so responsive to it,” she said. “We’ve got really cool pirate scenes and the dwarves and Aladdin comes out. There are aspects of both princesses and for little boys. It really is, from start to finish, a fastpaced show.”

BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS It will be difficult to gauge the Eastview girls basketball team’s potential until the Lightning passes its chemistry test. Not in the classroom, but on the court, in practice and in the locker room. “I like the fact that we’re working hard,” Eastview senior tri-captain Amber Mehr said. “We probably still have some work to do as far as bonding. We have some freshmen stepping up and some people in different roles.” Add to the mix a new head coach, and you have a team still trying to find its way. “We have a long way to go, but we’re where I expected we would be right now,” said Melissa Guebert, Eastview’s first-year head coach. “Our returning players were not the go-to players last year, so that’s an adjustment for them. We’re still trying to build chemistry, and we have some things on the court we’re trying to do better.” Eastview won two of its first three games in Guebert’s debut season. The Lightning split two games at a Thanksgiving weekend tournament at Hamline University, defeating Prairie Seeds Academy 56-17 and losing to White Bear Lake 42-30. Eastview pulled away in the second half of a 62-49 home-court victory over Park of Cottage Grove on Dec. 1. In the Park game, Eastview showed

the potential to run the floor and get low-post baskets out of its half-court offense. “It’s good to know we can score inside or outside,” said Mehr, a 6-foot1 forward. “We also have players like [senior guard] Paige Palkovich who play good defense.” Guebert also praised the Lightning’s versatility. For example, “Amber is one of our tallest players, but she can bring the ball up the floor,” the coach said. “And sometimes the player who’s guarding her might not be used to guarding

someone who’s handling the ball.” Eastview was 22-7 last season and reached the Class 4A, Section 3 championship game before losing to Lakeville North 46-42. Lakeville North has since been moved out of Section 3, but there are a lot of things that have to happen for Eastview to replace North as section champion. First, the Lightning has to replace the combined 34.9 points per game scored by Alex Beckman and Jenna

You don’t need to tell Apple Valley’s boys basketball players what they don’t have. They’ll tell you. “We don’t have a lot of height,” sophomore guard Tyus Jones said. “We’re not very tall,” junior guard Harry Sonie said. If that sounds like a subject that’s been harped on during Eagles practices, well, it has. It’s the coaches’ way of telling the players it will take maximum effort to realize their considerable potential. “We graduated our four tallest players from last year,” head coach Zach Goring said. “That’s the biggest change. We’re smaller, but I think we’re faster and shoot better as a group. “We’ve told the kids we can’t let teams outwork us. Most of the teams we play are going to be taller, so if they outwork us, we’re going to be in trouble.” Apple Valley was fifth in the Associated Press state Class 4A preseason rankings. The players’ performance during the summer probably had something to do with it. Among other things, they finished second in a University of Minnesota team camp without Jones, who was fulfilling USA Basketball commitments. The Eagles also showed during the preseason they’re a team to be taken seriously, winning a scrimmage against

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE three-time defending state Class 4A champion Hopkins. “We don’t want to make too much out of that because it was a scrimmage,” Sonie said. “But it was big for us. It showed us we can compete if we do the simple things – rebound, hustle, shoot the ball well.” If they do that, the Eagles’ state ranking could climb, putting them squarely under the microscope. Jones knows something about that. Even though he has three years of high school eligibility remaining, he already is on many Division I college coaches’ wish lists. Last summer Jones played on a USA Basketball team that won the International Basketball Federation Americas Under-16 championship. His 5.6 assists per game average led all players in the tournament. Goring said the 6-foot, 1-inch Jones will be asked to do a little bit of everything – handle the ball, score, set up teammates, play sound defense. “It’s my third year, so I think the coaches expect me to show some leadership, too,” said Jones, one of the Eagles’ three captains. Last year Jones averaged 18.8 points in 16 games (he missed 13 games because of a lacerated kidney). He helped lead the Eagles to the Class 4A, Section 3 championship game before they lost to Lakeville South. The two seniors on the roster, forward

Mitch Hechsel and Grant Christian, also are captains. Hechsel is expected to start while Christian will see playing time off the bench. Goring said Sonie and junior guard Dustin Fronk also are potential Division I players. Fronk averaged 10 points a game last year and Sonie scored six a game. Sophomore forward Dennis Austin might have worked his way into the starting lineup. “He played JV last year as a freshman, and he had a good summer,” Goring said. Players such as sophomore guard Robert Torbroxen and junior forwards Chris Laymon and Matt Christiansen also figure in the Eagles’ plans. In the Hopkins scrimmage, “we spread the floor and shot the ball well,” Goring said. “Defensively, because we’re not very tall, we’ll have to try to keep the ball from getting into the post. So we’ll have to get after people.” The Eagles seldom will have a player taller than 6-4 on the floor, making rebounding a concern. “We’re going to have to work extremely hard on that,” Jones said. “Last year we had a big front line and it wasn’t as hard for us to rebound.” The Eagles played Eden Prairie, last year’s state Class 4A runner-up, in their season opener Dec. 6, after this edition went to press. Apple Valley plays Tartan in the Breakdown Tip Off Classic at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Minnetonka High School. “That’s two tough teams to start out with,” Goring said. “But it’ll be fun, and it’ll get us ready for conference play.”

Boys hoops preview: Eastview ranked 2nd in state Burnsville Coach: Matt Eppen. Last season: 12-14 overall; lost in Class 4A, Section 3 quarterfinals. Next game: 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at home against Eden Prairie. Outlook: The Blaze doesn’t have to wait long to find out how it measures up against the best teams in Class 4A. Burnsville played three-time defending state champion Hopkins on Dec. 6 (after this edition went to press) and the next opponent, Eden Prairie, played in last year’s state title game. Burnsville will roll out a largely new lineup. Before this season, only center Chase Roullier (36 points in 2010-11) and forward Ryan Swanson (10 points) had scored in a varsity game. Roullier is the only player who has started at the varsity level. Roullier and Swanson are two of the Blaze’s three captains. The other is sen-

ior guard Zach Maxon. Guards Bryan Heard and Marshon McIntosh and forward A.J. Coleman are the other seniors on the Blaze roster.

Interim head coach: Mike Sullivan. Last season: 21-6 overall; lost in Class 4A, Section 3 quarterfinals. So far: lost to St. Louis Park 64-55 on Dec. 3. Next game: Friday, Dec. 9, at North St. Paul tournament. Outlook: Wildcats center Shea Mandli took it to St. Louis Park in the season opener, scoring 19 points. The senior co-captain averaged 7.6 points last season. Also returning is senior co-captain Nick Sabatke, a guard who averaged 9.3 points last season. Next game: 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, against Benilde-St. Margaret’s at Minnetonka High School. Outlook: Eastview was second in the Associated Press Class 4A preseason rankings. If Eastview had any doubters, they might have become believers after the Lightning destroyed 10th-ranked Duluth East last week in Duluth.

Leading the charge for the Lightning is Drake University-bound senior post Joey King, who averaged 17.6 points a game last season. Ben Oberfeld, who like King is 6-foot-7, will have an expanded role with the graduation of forward Frank Veldman. Oberfeld averaged about eight points per game last season. The Lightning also has depth at guard, with Chris Narum, Darin Haugh and Jordan Bolger all seeing varsity time last year. Eastview also comes into this season with a chip on its shoulder. After winning the 2010-11 South Suburban Conference title, the Lightning went into the Section 3 playoffs as the No. 1 seed. But it lost to Lakeville South in the semifinals. Girls basketball FROM PAGE 23 Dockter, who were seniors last season. Beckman and Dockter scored all but two of Eastview’s points in the Section 3 title game last March. Ninth-grader Madison Guebert, the coach’s daughter, scored in double figures in each of Eastview’s first three games and had 21 points against Park. Melissa Guebert said she believes the Lightning will become a balanced scoring team, and that day might not be far away. Five players – Mehr, Palkovich, junior guard Mikaela Wilson, senior guard Meghan Ryan and senior forward Hannah Shie – averaged four to 8.3 points through the first three games. Paul Goetz, who guided the Eastview High School girls basketball program through the first 14 years of its existence, resigned as head coach after last season but is staying on as an assistant. The change will allow him to watch his son play boys basketball

at Rosemount. Guebert was Miss Basketball in South Dakota in 1983 and starred at Augustana College, where she is still the school’s career scoring leader. She has been a varsity assistant basketball coach in Georgia and last year coached the Eastview Athletic Association eighth-grade girls team to a state championship. One of Goetz’s last decisions as varsity head coach was to name to the 2011-12 captains – Mehr, Palkovich and senior forward Emily Young. “They’re three very different personalities, and I like that,” Guebert said. “I don’t think you want three captains who all have the same personality.” The Lightning plays at home against New Prague at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9. On Dec. 13, Eastview is home against defending state Class 4A champion Hopkins, which won each of its first four games by at least 22 points. Eastview’s South Suburban Conference schedule begins Dec. 16 with a game at Bloomington Kennedy, a team favored by many to win the league.

‘It’s good to know we can score inside or outside.’

Preview FROM PREVIOUS PAGE when the Lightning plays Benilde-St. Margaret’s, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Minnetonka High School.

Rosemount Coach: Bryan Schnettler. Last season: 7-21 overall; reached Class 4A, Section 3 semifinals. So far: lost to Minnetonka 60-55 on Dec. 1.

Next game: 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at home against Minneapolis South. Outlook: Returning their top two scorers could help the Irish improve on last year’s seven-win total. Senior forward Matt Nelson averaged 11.7 points a game last season, while senior forward Brandon Forcier averaged 8.2. Nelson and Forcier are captains, as is senior guard Charlie Broback (6.7 points per game last season). Nelson led the Irish with 15 points in their season opener at Minnetonka last week. Senior forward Tyler Liermann scored 11 points, Broback added nine and sophomore guard Garrett Goetz had seven.

EDUCATION District 196 moves forward with online fees payment plan At its Nov. 28 meeting, the District 196 School Board approved a recommendation to implement a fee management system to reduce cash and check handling in district schools by allowing parents to pay school fees online using their credit card.

The new system is expected to be ready next fall for the start of the 20122013 school year. In addition to providing a one-stop shop for paying co-curricular participation fees, field trip fees, transportation fees, drivers education and student parking fees and making deposits to their children’s school meal accounts, the system will also allow parents to fill out and submit required forms and other paperwork on the same website at the same time they make their payment. The district has used a FeePay serv-

ice since 2008 to allow parents to make deposits to their children’s school meal accounts and pay fees for optional transportation service. Currently, parents are required to pay the credit card processing charge, which has limited the number of parents paying online with credit. Under the new fee management system, the district will absorb and account for the credit card processing charges, like businesses do. District Director of Finance and Operations Jeff Solomon said the dis-

trict wants to limit the vulnerability of cash and check handling at the school level. Based on the amount of fees the district collects annually and an estimated 30 percent of payments made by credit card, the processing charges will total approximately $175,000 for the first year. Solomon said the district could cover that cost with a 1 percent increase in fees, which board members agreed to consider for next year. Info: district196.org.
