Animal autopsy shows ‘Taijah’ likely died from ulcer complications last Monday night BY MATTHEW HANKEY SUN NEWSPAPERS The Minnesota Zoo staff and greater zoo community have been mourning the loss of its female dolphin calf “Taijah” after it passed away unexpectedly late in the night on Monday, Feb. 6. Taijah’s death is the sixth dolphin the zoo has lost since 2006. A necropsy, or animal autopsy, was performed Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the University of Minnesota and the results show Taijah likely died from complications from a stomach ulcer, said Minnesota Zoo Director of Biological Programs Kevin Willis. Zoo officials sensed a change in Taijah a couple days before she died. “Over the weekend, the DOLPHIN: TO PAGE 12

Childbirth education center provides independent option BabyLove in Eagan opened in September, offers variety of childbirth classes BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Veronica Jacobsen has wanted to open a childcare education business for more than five years. Jacobsen of Richfield got her wish when she and Minneapolis resident Brittany Kubricky opened the childbirth education center BabyLove Sept. 1 at 4590 Scott Trail, Ste. 200, in Eagan. In a time when hospitals have been cutting birthing programs, such as at Fairview Hospital locations in Edina, Burnsville and the University of Minnesota, BabyLove serves as independent business for mothers and mothers-tobe (and fathers and fathers-to-be) to learn all about childcare. BabyLove offers classes in Lamaze, breastfeeding, expecting and new parent 101, cloth diapering, “Elimination Communication” (early potty-training that can start as early as birth), infant and child car safety and “doula” services. “Doula” is a Greek word meaning “a

woman who serves” and now refers to a trained and professional who provides physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth and who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. Jacobsen and Kubricky are both certified doulas and offer their doula services independent from their business. Before opening BabyLove, Jacobsen taught childcare classes for three and a half years at Rochester and Twin Cities hospitals. She is a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, Certified Lactation Counselor and Child Passenger Safety Technician. In March 2010, Kubricky hired Jacobsen as a private Lamaze-based childbirth instructor. After a year of discussion, they decided to open their own childbirth education center. “Since I started being a doula, I always wanted a physical space to build a community and teach,” Jacobsen said. “Finding someone with the similar drive and passion is not always easy.” Minneapolis resident Heather Deatrick said the type of childcare education the BabyLove teachers provide is BABYLOVE: TO NEXT PAGE

BabyLove FROM PREVIOUS PAGE both unique and informative. “There’s nobody out here talking about this stuff,” Deatrick said regarding child car safety at a Jan. 31 informal nursing moms discussion group at BabyLove. Kubricky said an important BabyLove tenet is to value each family’s situation and opinions. “We try to be involved in your learning and not telling you what to do,” said Kubricky, also a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator. “Sometimes they have different insights,” added Jacobsen about the couples she teaches. Another aspect of BabyLove’s classes is giving each family the time it deserves for its childcare education. “We only ever accept 10 couples [per class] to keep class sizes small,” said Kubricky. BabyLove offers information all locations a mother can give birth and strives to inform about mothers-to-be about all their options. Deatrick, mother of three children, had her last child at home and said it took time for her to feel at ease giving birth away from a hospital. She would recommend the experience

to mothers-to-be, only if they were mentally prepared and sufficiently educated on the subject. “It’s all where you’re at [mentally],” Deatrick said. “What’s really important is that you’re comfortable and happy where you’re giving birth.” Minneapolis resident Andrea Perry took an “Elimination Communication” class in the fall 2011. Currently, she uses a combination of early potty training and diapers for her child. Perry said BabyLove teachers gave her potty training options to make an informed decision for herself. “You can do this part-time,” Perry said of the “Elimination Communication” method. “I brought my husband along, so that legitimized it.” All BabyLove classes are evidencedbased and use current medical knowledge, Jacobsen said. “They research it and they give you well-researched advice,” Perry said. “You’re getting really informed classes.” Rosemount resident Kari Barker and her husband recently completed a fiveweek Lamaze class taught by Jacobsen. “It was really educational,” said Barker, who is pregnant with her first child. “I recommend them. They’re very good classes.” For more information about BabyLove classes, visit babylovemn.com.

A portrait of a depraved sports fan The completion of another football season frees up ample time This op-ed space is typically used to write about that which is novel, pontificate on that which writers deem important and to ask difficult and timely questions. This column falls into the latter category. What do I do now that football season is over? OK. Perhaps the difficulty of this question is suspect, but it does need to be asked for my sanity, if nothing else. Since the National Football League owners and NFL Player’s Association came to a working agreement to play games in 2011, I digested all that was football around the clock. I read countless online football articles. I drafted, managed, over managed, and sometimes under managed my

MATTHEW HANKEY Eagan/Apple Valley Community Editor two fantasy football teams. I listened to Vikings radio shows daily and I’m not even a Vikings fan. The point is, I couldn’t get enough football. With the Super Bowl over, it will be another seven months before another snap is taken in a regular season NFL game. Yes, the NFL will hold its rookie combine later this month and rookies will attend mini-camp practices in the spring. Training camps begin in earnest in the heart of summer, but that’s a long ways off. Let’s review some options for how I could spend my time between now and September. Finding another spectator sport seems like the logical outlet for me. As a diehard Badgers fan, it has been fun to watch the

men’s basketball team in the hunt for another Big 10 title. But, let’s be realistic. They will likely be eliminated from the NCAA Tournament before the Final Four and will not compete for a title this year. Moving on. This winter has been strange for a few reasons, weather included. Notably, I’ve found myself watching NBA basketball for the first time since Michael Jordan retired for the second time in 1999. Growing up in Wisconsin, I didn’t root for the Milwaukee Bucks and I feel no allegiance to them now that I live in Minnesota. With that said, watching this year’s Timberwolves team has restored my faith in the small market NBA team. As of the paper’s deadline, the team is 13-13 and on the cusp of the playoff hunt. In this shortened NBA season, there are 16 fewer games packed into a tighter schedule. The ’Wolves often play three games in 4-5 days, ideal for television viewers during the doldrums of February sports

viewing. Power forward Kevin Love was just named to the NBA All-Star team and point guard Ricky Rubio and forward Derrick Williams will take part in the rookie/second-year player game during the AllStar weekend. This team is young, talented and potentially a force to be reckoned with this season. Because I am a new fan of the team, my expectations are high and not subject to the years of failure in the 2000s. Besides sports, catching up on reading fiction novels has long been on my backburner. With a job that requires constant reading, writing, re-reading and re-writing, reading for fun has lost some of its luster for me. I know I should give that copy of “Cold Mountain” on my nightstand another try. At the very least, it needs a good dusting. Yes, that’s it. Reading more is the obvious answer, which answers my initial question. Why didn’t I ask myself this earlier?

Eden Prairie’s registry: A good example to follow Domestic Partner Registry affords some benefits to unmarried couples The Eden Prairie City Council is the latest to approve a Domestic Partner Registry that legally enables couples living together and not married to acquire certain benefits. Domestic partners can be any couple, including same-sex and heterosexual couples. After filling out a one-page

DON HEINZMAN Editorial Writer

form and in some cases paying a slight fee, these couples can be eligible for bereavement leave, family leave and insurance benefits at companies that recognize domestic partnerships. The couple must be unmarried and living together, live in the city and be committed to one another to the same extent as married persons are to each

other, except for the traditional marital status and solemnities. Back in 2008, former Gov. Tim Pawlenty vetoed legislation that would have allowed partners of state, federal and city employees to a have the same benefits reserved for married couples. His veto, however, didn’t prohibit individual cities from approving an ordinance for their own domestic partner registry. Minneapolis, St. Paul, Edina, Golden Valley, St. Louis Park, Eagan and Richfield have approved these registries. Rochester, Red Wing and Duluth also have them. The Eden Prairie City

Council wrestled with the registry before approving it on HEINZMAN: TO PAGE 8

Heinzman FROM PAGE 6 second reading, 4-1. One council member, Brad Aho, said it wasn’t needed, that only nine people in neighboring Edina registered for the benefits and only 2 percent of the cities in the state have adopted it. More to the point, he argued that the ordinance undermines marriage because it infers

that any marriage is as equal as the partnership. Council member Kathy Nelson said the proposal has nothing to do with the proposed marriage amendment that will be on the ballot in November. “The ordinance,” she said, “does not make a statement in favor of or against any state law, and it is not political.” Another council member, Sherry Butcher Wickstrom, reminded that the city has a Manifesto which encourages diversity. It’s a way of acting and not just talking about diversity, she said.

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens was surprised more people didn’t object to the registry. The pattern in cities where it has been passed is that most people find the registry reasonable. The mayor struck the right chord when she said: “The ordinance may not affect many people, but we deal with things that affect a small number of people all the time, as well as decisions that face all Eden Prairie residents.” That’s the genius of local government; it is local enough to be concerned about all of its neighbors.

This action by the Eden Prairie City Council is to be commended, because it enables citizens to get benefits under the law regardless of their marital status as long as they live together in their community. Other cities should follow Eden Prairie’s example. Don Heinzman is an editorial writer for ECM Publishers. Sun Newspapers welcomes responses to this and any other editorial page commentary. Final defendant sentenced in restaurant credit card scheme Eagan resident one of seven indicted on one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud BY JARED HUIZENGA – SUN NEWSPAPERS The last of seven defendants in a restaurant credit card scheme that resulted in more than $150,000 in losses was sentenced Jan. 19. Demetrius Thomas, 36, of Rogers, was sentenced to 96 months in prison for one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Thomas was indicted with six others – including 24-year-old Anthony Curry, of Plymouth, and 29-year-old Brandon Scott, of Eagan – in August 2010. Thomas pleaded guilty that November. Among the other co-defendants, Kanetra Range, 33, of Rogers, was sentenced to 42 months on one count of conspiracy last May and Makiesha Mayo, 30, of St. Paul, was sentenced to 18 months for one count of conspiracy at the same time. Last April, Curry was sentenced to 27 months for one count of conspiracy. Scott, Brian Davis, 48, of Chaska, and Nancia Range, 35, of St. Paul, were sentenced to time served. All six of the defendants pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy. According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the group participated in a skimming scheme over the last several months of 2009. Skimming happens when the account number of a credit or debit card is transferred from one card to another without the consent of the original card owner. Once skimmed, the stolen account information can be used to make purchases and make cash withdrawals. During the scheme, Kanetra Range and Thomas recruited restaurant workers to get credit and debit cards from customers so they could be skimmed. Scott, who worked at Split Rock Grill in Bloomington, gave the cards to the duo, who were actually in the restaurant with a machine that could read the magnetic strips on the cards. Scott admitted that the defendants made between $10,000 and $30,000 in

unauthorized purchases on the cards he provided. Curry, who worked at an Olive Garden, provided the same type of information and admitted that between $30,000 and $70,000 in fraudulent purchases were made with the information he obtained. Mayo, who worked at two different Wendy’s restaurants, obtained card information by running them through a skimming machine that had been provided to her. She admitted that the defendants made between $120,000 and $200,000 in unauthorized with the numbers she acquired. Davis admitted to taking re-encoded cards from Thomas and Kanetra Range and to making between $150,000 and $200,000 in purchases with them. Nancia Range also admitted to making purchases on cards from Thomas and Kanetra Range. In addition, whe also admitted to being a part of a separate credit card scheme with Thomas and Kanetra Range. In that scheme, in 2007 and 2008 they used the personal of others to apply for credit cards online. In all, Nancia Range admitted to being responsible for $120,000 to $200,000 in fraudulent purchases. Kanetra Range and Thomas admitted that the losses of the previous scheme were in excess of $400,000. All seven defendants faced up to 30 years in prison for their roles in the scheme. The case was investigated by the U.S Postal Inspection Service and the St. Paul, Edina and St. Louis Park Police Departments and the Minnesota Financial Crimes Taskforce. e

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-

tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. In addition to exposing these truths about thyroid treatment, Dr. Gilman will also discuss natural solutions to help thyroid problems. Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating for Dr. Gilman’s private thyroid seminar is limited. It will be held on Wednesday, February 22nd at 7:00 PM at the Holiday Inn Express, 1950 Rahncliff Ct., Eagan. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!

Female dolphin calf “Taijah” is shown in a recent photo at her home at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley. Taijah died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 6, likely from ulcer complications, according to the animal autopsy performed the next day. (Submitted photo)

behavior was a little off enough that it was a concern,” said Willis. “But, she was still nursing.” Early Monday morning, zoo staff witnessed Taijah spit up a blood clot and performed an ultrasound immediately, Willis said. The ultrasound showed that Taijah had fluid in her stomach. At that time, Willis said zoo staff put Taijah on medicine for a potential ulcer and she seemed to be stable through the afternoon and into the evening. “She was certainly not her perky self, but she was swimming with her mom until 8 [p.m.], “Willis said. She died two hours later at about 10 p.m., said Willis. “It’s very hard to lose a young animal,” Willis said. “It was very sad, very sad – a hard time.” The zoo’s marine mammal staff and veterinarians had been monitoring Taijah around the clock since her behavior became a concern, said Willis. Taijah’s father, 48-year-old Semo, and mother, 24-year-old Allie, are the only two remaining dolphins at the zoo after Taijah’s passing. Willis said Taijah’s parents are aware that their calf, born in July 2010, is no longer with them and appear to be in fine health. “They’re both eating, which is good,” said Willis. “They’re behaving with a little more energy than is normal, but they’re fine. We’re monitoring them and so far, we’ve got no concerns about their

health.” Willis said the zoo immediately closed the dolphin-viewing stadium following Taijah’s death. “We are not doing our normal dolphin presentations today just so they’re not disturbed and so they can interact and we can watch them,” Willis said on Tuesday, Feb. 7. As of Thursday, Feb. 9, Willis said the stadium remains closed and the decision when to re-open will be made on a day-today basis. “We’re giving them time to adjust to it just being the two of them,” Willis said of Semo and Allie. “We’re relying on those who know their behaviors best.” Losing six dolphins since 2006 has puzzled zoo officials. In 2006, the zoo lost a male calf, Harley, when he ran into a pool wall and died of a skull fracture, Willis said. In the same year, 14-year-old female Ayla was euthanized due to pain she endured since birth from a severe spine curvature. Harley’s mother, Rio, died unexpectedly in 2006 at the age of 37. Another dolphin was stillborn at the zoon in 2009. Allie’s mother, April, died in February 2011 at age 44. But, Willis insists its care of Semo gives them encouragement that they’re effectively managing their dolphins. “It’s really great to see Semo in the pool,” Willis said. “He remains the happy lug he’s always been.” Willis said Semo is currently the oldest dolphin in human care, according to the U.S. government’s marine animal database. “If we can keep an animal that old healthy, it gives us some confidence,” said Willis. “But, this is a blow.”

tricts include portions or all of Apple Valley, Eagan, Rosemount and Burnsville. Dakota County has traditionally been known as a conservativeleaning county. At Black Hawk, guest speakers state Sen. Ted Daley and state Rep. Diane Anderson called for a return to conservative values for the upcoming presidential election. All Republican presidential candidates had a speaker pitch for their nomination at the caucus, a couple of whom read letters penned by the presidential hopefuls. Mary Pawlenty, wife of former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, spoke on behalf of Mitt Romney. “It’s absolutely essential that we beat Barack Obama in the upcoming election,” she said. But, it was the speakers on behalf of Ron Paul and Rick Santorum that received the loudest applause. In Minnesota, Santorum received 21,908 straw poll votes for president, nearly 45 percent of all votes, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State website. Paul took second place, receiving 13,185 straw poll votes (27 percent). Romney was a distant third, receiving 8,207 votes (17 percent). Newt Gingrich received 5,254 votes (11 percent). Santorum’s victory in the straw poll came as no surprise to Senate District 37 Republican Chair Pat Staley, who spent the caucus night at Rosemount High School. “Minnesota has a habit of voting for the most conservative alternative to the ‘frontrunner,’” Staley said, clarifying the “frontrunner” as Romney. Eagan resident and transplanted Texan Tracy Reis is lending her support to Ron Paul and not because he is also a native Texan. “I wanted to see what it was all about,” Reis said of the caucus. “I was tired of sitting back and doing nothing.” As far as Paul’s chances, Reis said, “I think better than most people are going to expect.” Reis arrived to the caucus 40 minutes before the night officially kicked off at 7 p.m. “I was able to get one of the good parking spots,” she said. Eagan resident A.J. Johnson also showed up to caucus for and support Ron Paul. “I think as far as all the other candidates go, they all represent the same thing,” Johnson said. “He’s the only

guy out there that would really shake things up. If you don’t want the status quo, you’re going to vote for Ron Paul.” Burnsville resident Paul Beseman came to see what all the hype was about. Like others, he hadn’t decided which presidential candidate to support before the straw poll votes were taken. Beseman said he showed up, “to see this experience. I’ve never caucused before.” Like Beseman, Eagan resident and first-time caucus-goer Channing Luden wanted to get a taste of the Republican Party platform and experience grassroots politics. “I wanted to get involved and it’s best to get involved at the local level,” Luden said. As far as lending support to a presidential candidate, Luden remained on the fence. “It’s kind of been hard to decide,” said Luden, adding he likes certain campaign platform points of what Newt Gingrich, Paul and Santorum stand for. Burnsville resident Shawn Goffinet is fully supporting Ron Paul for president. Paul’s foreign policy stance of “nonintervention” was the last for Goffinet to believe in, though now he said it’s what he has grown to appreciate the most about the presidential hopeful. “We think we have the moral authority to teach people how to live at the end of a gun, and that’s just wrong,” Goffinet said. On the democratic side, Senate District 38 DFL Chair Vicki Wright called its caucus at Eagan High School a success. Officially, 508 DFLers caucused at the high school, far fewer than the multiple thousand that attended in 2008. “Four years ago we had over 3,000 because of the presidential race and it really drew a lot because they wanted to vote for Hillary [Clinton] or [Barack] Obama,” Wright said. “We did not expect that this year.” Despite a lower turnout, Wright said those that did caucus were enthusiastic and interested in being involved with local politics, particularly with the Minnesota House and Senate races. “This is very exciting for us,” said Wright. “This is the first organizing step. It’s really encouraging.” Resolutions at the DFL caucus included opposition to the Republicanbacked constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage as well as opposition to requiring identification to vote at the pools. “They’re creating a problem when there isn’t one,” Wright said of the Republicans.

Simple is the new rich Boomers should spend more time sitting on the porch BY EMILY HEDGES – CONTRIBUTING WRITER When Ron Timm of Minnetonka gives seminars on how to live simply, he frequently refers to the concept of “empty porches.” He challenges his students to drive down Summit Avenue in St. Paul, or around Lake Minnetonka when it’s beautiful outside and see if anyone is

SENIOR

using their porch. “They’re never sitting out there because they are always working,” he said. “Boomers, especially, are finding that they’re working during the years they expected to be sitting on the porch.” Twenty-two years ago, Timm was one of those executives working long hours with an expensive home on the lake that he never had time to enjoy. That is, until the day he thought he was having a heart attack. Come to find out, he was okay, but the experience left its mark. “When I thought I had a heart attack I started thinking about what is important,” he said. “When you’re on your death bed, no one is going to say, ‘I wish

LIVING AT ITS BEST!

I’d spent another four or five hours every week at the office.’” From that moment on, he wanted to do something different with his life. He started by going back to graduate school, and ended up writing his doctoral dissertation on Exit Strategies from Corporate America Using Voluntary Simplicity Principals. Timm not only read a couple hundred contemporary books on the subject, but also relied on the writing of philosophers hundreds of years old. “Philosophers call it voluntary simplicity,” he said. “It’s about living below your means. It gives you time to enjoy the things that are meaningful.”

Timm left his job and opened his own graphic arts business. After 15 years, he decided to close the doors and pursue two passions, photography and teaching. Since then, he has helped support his family with his photographs, and teaching photography at the college, community education and through oneon-one instruction as a photo coach. He also wanted to spend his life helping others find peace of mind and a better quality of life through reducing expenses. His course, “Living Better on Less” is now offered in communities all over the metro area.

Assessing your life Better communication can pay dividends

“The biggest gift Kolbe gives is to tell you where you fit in. It can also help a Boomer figure out ‘what’s your

Financial advisor uses Kolbe Index to help learn how clients think

next career?’” Steve Lear

BY EMILY HEDGES – CONTRIBUTING WRITER Whether Kevin Riley, CFO of AdvisorNet Financial, is working with his company’s stable of financial advisors, or coaching junior hockey, he understands that communication is everything. That’s why taking the Kolbe Index more than two years ago was a turning point for him personally, and an opportunity to share this key to success with others. Riley, a resident of Rosemount, learned about the Kolbe Index from Steve Lear of Affiance Financial out of St. Louis Park. “He was starting this Kolbe project and wanted to partner with us,” Riley said. Together, their two companies formed the AdvisorNet Financial Wisdom program, which is offered to more than 250 advisors Riley’s company supports. “Understanding how your clients think and how they make decisions helps you make better decisions as their financial advisor,” he said. The 36-question assessment reveals the way people operate in four areas: Fact Finding (the way you gather information), Follow Thru (how you arrange and design your environment); Quick

Kevin Riley, CFO of AdvisorNet Financial, teaches financial advisors how to communicate with Boomers. (Photo by Paul Groessel - Sun Newspapers) Start (the way you deal with risk); and Implementer (the way you handle space and tangibles). After taking the test, the experts at Affiance Financial walk the client through results that are displayed on a four-color chart with numerical values plotting their location on a spectrum in each of the four areas. According to Lear, Kolbe isn’t about cognition, intelligence, personality, or values. “There are other types of tests for that. The Kolbe Index is about how people take action; if they were free to be themselves, how would they do something.”

Because Boomers make up the largest segment of clients for the financial advisors that Riley works with, how Kolbe can help people in this age bracket was a key question in developing the program. “As a financial advisor you want to learn how to communicate with those individuals (Boomers).” Riley believes that if a financial advisor can do that more effectively, they will be much more likely to succeed in helping Boomers stretch their money through retirement. Riley points out that he’s encountered other examples of how Kolbe can help this age group. “If someone tests as a

Quick Start, and they have never started a company, they may say, ‘Wow, maybe there’s something out there I should be doing differently,’” he said. “If they’re a Fact Finder, they might discover they haven’t been in the right job their whole life.” Lear counsels Boomers daily who are contemplating a longer working life for all sorts of reasons. “For Boomers, we can help if they need to work, or want to work for their health and sense of purpose. The biggest gift Kolbe gives is to tell you where you fit in. It can also help a Boomer figure out ‘what’s your next career?’” For a vast majority of people taking the Kolbe Index, Lear believes the results reinforce many things about them they already know. “But it provides them with the verbs to describe themselves to others, and this increases confidence. All of a sudden, you have language to describe yourself that is what we’ve been missing.”

Ron Timm of Minnetonka thought he was having a heart attack. That served as a wake-up call for him to pursue a new lifestyle that emphasizes simplicity.

“It’s inspirational to teach the course,” said Timm. “I hear lots of interesting stories from people who were about to retire and now can’t afford to, or who lost their jobs, or just decided they had to cut back.” Timm recalls a corporate attorney friend who decided to leave her job for greater peace of mind. “When she sold her house and bought a less expensive one, the bank was suspicious because no one bought a less expensive house. But it permitted her to change her career and get into a different business that she was

passionate about.” Another student, a 25-year-old woman, already knew she didn’t want to be an undertaker for the rest of her life. She took Timm’s course to figure out how to transition into another line of work. Timm points out to his students all of the options that become possible in life if you reduce the amount you need to live on. “Maybe you work four days a week instead of five, change fields or it gives you more time to go back to school or maybe even retire.” While all ages regularly attend Timm’s seminars, it’s Boomers that come most often.

Simple ... From page 20 “Right now is a perfect storm for Baby Boomers, with jobs, home prices, the stock market and dwindling 401Ks such as they are,” he said. “Boomers are getting older and must start thinking about how to reduce their spending if they want to retire.” Timm points out to Boomers that after retirement they will still require 70-percent of pre-retirement income, which can be a problem for many. His seminar offers practical advice on how to reduce your monthly out-go, and each student receives his 20-page handout with tips on how to live below your means, from saving money on housing, food, entertainment and travel to ways

to get out of credit card debt. So whether the simple living strategies are voluntary or born of necessity, Timm believes they are the key to having a life that is, “outwardly simple and inwardly rich.” He no longer works in an office, and he no longer lives in a lake house. Instead, he and his wife live in a less expensive but lovely home in Minnetonka and rent out the downstairs to live for next to nothing. Hanging on his wall is one of his favorite photographs, two Adirondack chairs with a window box full of blossoms behind them. For Timm that picture embodies the philosophies he shares with the world: voluntary simplicity, live below your means, make time to sit out on the porch. Kolbe Index ... From page 19 After seeing the benefits of Kolbe for his financial advisors and their clients, Riley soon saw the potential for his own company. “We brought it into the client experience, but then we thought, ‘Gosh, this would be kind of neat to do with our staff.” For Riley personally, the results of his Kolbe assessment didn’t really surprise him. “Even though I considered myself a less-typical accountant, I’m still very fact-based, very black-and-white in my decision making,” he said. But the communication strategies suggested by the results Riley has taken to heart. “Young or old, everybody has a differ-

ent way to communicate,” he said. “Kolbe helps you look at individuals, even kids, and nail down how you think they might test out on Kolbe.” Riley can see traits developing in the 14- to 16-year-olds that he coaches. “You can see them already starting down that line. Are they Fact Finders? If they are Quick Starts, maybe that’s why they have a short attention span,” he said. “In the last two years since I took the test, it’s been really helpful in all areas of my life.” Affiance Financial will host a free workshop on the second floor of the Metropoint Tower located at 600 Hwy.169 South on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. Space is limited to 50 people. Anyone interested in attending should email penne.swenson@affiancefinancial.com.

Eagan boys returning to state Nordic meet

Eagan’s Andrew Cumming, shown competing at the Buck Hill Invitational last month, finished fourth in the Section 4 boys Alpine skiing meet and helped the Wildcats get to state as a team.

BY ANDY ROGERS – SUN NEWSPAPERS The ISD 196 boys Nordic team has plenty to cheer about after the Section 1 meet on Tuesday at Trollhaugen in Dresser, Wis. Seven of the top 12 placers were wearing ISD 196 ski outfits, and the Eagan boys team edged out Lakeville North, which had the top two racers, by seven points to send the entire team to state. Nick Acton was Eagan’s top placer, coming in third. Josh Podpeskar placed sixth, and teammates Jacob Edmond (11th), Ryan Larson (12th), Jacob Carlson (43rd), Chris Acton (45th) and Patrick Acton (51st) finished fast enough to qualify, all as underclassmen. Larson is in his first year, coming in with a hockey background, and both Podpeskar and Edmond made drastic strides from a year ago. Eagan qualified as a team in 2011, although several of its top skiers were seniors. Nick Acton was one of them, placing 67th overall. “I wasn’t very happy last year,” Nick Acton said. “I’d like to do a lot better this year than fifth. The whole team is going to have to step it up and I think we can do it.” The Eagan boys combine with fellow ISD 196 schools Rosemount, Apple Valley and Eastview during the season. Rosemount’s Nick Couillard (fourth in the section) will make a return trip to the state meet along with David Bumgarner (ninth) and former teammate Apple Valley’s Rhett Carlson (eighth). They were all part of a combined ISD 196 team that won the South Suburban Conference championship earlier this month. “I wish we could compete as one team, but we obviously did fine as one Eagan team,” Nick Acton said. “I’ll cheer them on at state just like I would someone from Eagan. It’s weird thinking I’m going to compete against them.” NORDIC: TO NEXT PAGE

Burnsville girls ski to state by slimmest of margins Blaze wins tiebreaker for second in Section 6 Alpine meet BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Nervous skiers, coaches and parents gathered in front of the restaurant at Buck Hill to find out who was going to the state meet and who wasn’t. They knew the Section 6 girls team competition would be close. What they couldn’t have known was how close. Five points separated the first- and fourth-place teams at the Feb. 7 section meet. Bloomington Jefferson took the title by four points, which was a wide margin compared to what came next. Burnsville and Lakeville South tied for second place, with Lakeville North fourth, one point back of the Blaze and Cougars. Because only two teams advance to the state meet, the BurnsvilleLakeville South tie had to be broken by the No. 5 skiers on each team. Toni Carlstrom’s 52nd-place finish proved to

be big for Burnsville because it was 12 places better than South’s No. 5 skier. And with that, the Blaze girls earned a spot in the state meet, which was Feb. 15 at Giants Ridge (the state meet took place after this edition went to press). “We have five girls who can score points for us,” said Burnsville coach Luke Abrahamson. “And if we needed a sixth, we’d be fine.” Lizzie Drusch (fourth, 50.46 seconds), Erica Lindsay (19th, 54.18), Laura Garbe (26th, 55.86) and Maddie Roberts (31st, 58.01) were the top four skiers that counted toward Burnsville’s team total. Carlstrom’s time, which proved to be critical, was 1:01.36. Michelle Kourthauer was 62nd overall in 1:03.53. While Burnsville’s state meet appearance might be considered an upset, members of the Blaze said they sensed something was brewing. “I kind of hoped we’d have a chance,” Drusch said. “We needed everybody to stand, and everybody did.” Abrahamson said Bloomington

Jefferson appeared to separate itself – albeit slightly – from the competition in the South Suburban Conference. But, he added, he saw an opportunity for Burnsville in the Section 6 meet, if the Blaze could seize it. “Based on their scores, we thought Jefferson was the favorite” in the section, Abrahamson said. “But then we said, ‘OK, if all our girls step up, ski their best and have clean runs, it could be enough’” to get Burnsville to state. Unlike some other teams in its section, Burnsville’s girls have nobody who competes in U.S. Ski Association meets on the weekends. That means the Blaze has to rely on consistency over star power. “There are some really good teams in our section,” Abrahamson said. “But when we see Burnsville, Burnsville, Burnsville on the results sheet, finishing together, it moves us up and pushes other teams down.” Burnsville probably won’t go into the state meet as one of the favorites, and that will help the Blaze keep their ALPINE: TO NEXT PAGE

Apple Valley, Rosemount & Eagan Sun-Current – Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012 – www.minnlocal.com

Nordic FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Nordic skiing was a popular sport at ISD 196, as it had the biggest roster in team history. Much of the large numbers can be attributed to the abundance of snow last season. “People kept telling their friends how fun it was,” Nick Acton said. “With a lot less this time around, the fond memories remain. I feel like most people I’ve talked to are planning to come back. I think they all really enjoyed it.” In Section 3 at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis, Burnsville’s Mike Johnson qualified for state after finishing fifth overall. The state Nordic meet is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 16, at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

Girls Nordic Burnsville has given Minnesota several quality skiers to represent the school at state and 2012 was no different. Vivian Hett won the South Suburban Conference title as well as the Section 3 title on Tuesday. She finished 11th last season as a freshman at state. She will bring her entire team with her this time around. Thanks to Jordan Horner’s fifth place and Tori Felton’s eighth place finish along with Krista Bain, Jane Koch, Kjerstin Narvesen and Johanna Weber, the Blaze won the Section 3 title a few days after winning the South Suburban Conference title. In Section 1, Eagan’s Sonja Hedblom blew the competition away in Dresser, Wis., as she qualified for her third state meet as a junior. Hedblom was 19th at state last season and the runner up in the South Suburban Conference championships. She finished 19th at state last season, but didn’t feel like it was her best effort. “I really want to get top 10,” Hedblom said. “Last year it wasn’t my race. I can’t psych myself out when it’s warm like that. Last year it was a mess trying to get kick wax going.” Last season the state meet featured rain and 40 degree weather. The lack of snow this season has brought anxiety to skiers as well. “When it’s really warm and sticky and there’s not such a great glide, it’s such a bummer,” Hedblom said. “But it wasn’t as bad as everyone imagined not having snow. Everyone is in the same position. We’ve all accepted the fact.” Eagan’s Roxanne Holt just made the cut to join Hedblom at state, finishing in the final qualifying spot. Panthers pull out a victory in final seconds Eastview boys hoops team loses for first time this season BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY SUN NEWSPAPERS When Lakeville North drew up its play for a potential game-winning shot, Grant Erickson wasn’t the first option. He probably wasn’t the second, third or fourth option, either. But the Panthers needed him to make a play, and the junior guard didn’t flinch. Erickson scored on a drive to the basket – his only points of the game – with 2.7 seconds remaining in North’s 57-56 victory at Eastview on Feb. 10 in a game that matched the No. 1- and No. 3-ranked boys basketball teams in Class 4A. “I think [Eastview] expected me to pass the whole time,” said Erickson, who averages 3.8 points a game for the 19-1 Panthers. “We were going to try to get it to Tyler Flack, but they wouldn’t let him get open. The lane opened up, and I took it.” Eastview, No. 1 in the Minnesota

Alpine FROM PREVIOUS PAGE goals modest. “The first time I was there, I straddled [a gate],” said Drusch, who qualified for the 2010 state meet as an eighth-grader. “So personally, the priority is to have two good runs.” Abrahamson’s goal for the team is even simpler. “Just go and have fun,” he said. “Going to the state meet is a great accomplishment. It should be fun.”

Other girls results Lakeville South junior Amanda Larson placed sixth individually in 50.83 at the Section 6 meet and will return to state. She was 33rd in the 2011 state meet. Lakeville North’s Briar Smith took 12th overall in 52.31. The top 10 individuals who are not on one of the two state-qualifying teams also advance to state. Apple Valley was eighth in the girls team standings, with Claire Hefke and Marta Iseite finishing 22nd and 23rd. Cassie Torbenson was 45th individ-

Basketball News state Class 4A rankings for seven consecutive weeks, lost for the first time this season. The Lightning (19-1) led by five points with 1:38 to play but couldn’t hold on. Eastview had been the last remaining undefeated team in Class 4A. The Panthers’ victory also pulled them into a tie with Eastview for first place in the South Suburban Conference at 11-1. Apple Valley was one game behind the co-leaders and played at Eastview on Feb. 14, after this edition went to press. “We told our kids if we were going to have any chance to win the conference we had to do it ourselves,” said North coach John Oxton, who also celebrated his 400th career victory. “We’ve got some prideful kids and some tough kids. So does Eastview. These are two very good high school teams.” On the game-winning play, Oxton said Eastview overplayed Lakeville North’s top offensive players to the point where taking the ball to the basket was Erickson’s best option. “So he just beat a guy one-on-one, which is not easy because their No. 4 [Eastview’s Darin Haugh, who guarded Erickson]is one of the best defensive ually for Eastview, which was 12th in the team competition.

Section 6 boys Burnsville came up short in its effort to qualify for state for the second consecutive year. Chanhassen and Edina were the top two teams in the Section 6 meet, and the Blaze was 40 points behind Edina. Burnsville junior Tom Flickinger qualified for state individually after finishing 11th overall in 49.42. Also qualifying individually was Lakeville North’s Connor Croasdale, who finished fourth in 47.72. He led the Panthers to seventh in the team competition. Chad Serba was Apple Valley’s top finisher in 35th place. The Eagles were 11th in the team standings. Travis O’Brien finished 31st overall to lead Lakeville South to 12th place. Eastview was 13th, with Parker Zeilon leading the Lightning by finishing 30th individually.

Section 4 meet Eagan’s boys team earned a place in the state meet after its second-place finish at the Section 4 meet Feb. 8 at Wild Mountain.

players in the conference,” Oxton said. Flack and senior forward Brett Rasmussen scored 12 points each to lead North. Ryan Saarela had 11 points and made perhaps the game’s biggest defensive play by forcing a dual possession with 20.2 seconds remaining and the arrow pointing North’s way. Senior forward Joey King had 18 points for Eastview despite having his playing time curtailed because of foul trouble. Chris Narum added 11 points and Haugh scored eight. Lakeville North’s only loss was 54-48 to Eastview on Jan. 10. The past several years, Lakeville North and Eastview have been in the same playoff section. This year, however, North was moved back to Class 4A, Section 1, while Eastview remained in Section 3. Therefore, a tiebreaking game between the teams couldn’t happen before the state tournament. If it does take place, Oxton said he knows his players won’t be overwhelmed by the situation. “What I like about this team is it doesn’t have that deer-in-the-headlights thing going,” he said. “They’re all-conference athletes, and they’ve been battle-tested.” Section champion Stillwater was comfortably ahead with 440 points, but the race for second was much closer. Eagan, with 402 points, was one ahead of third-place East Ridge. Mahtomedi was fourth with 399. Andrew Cumming and Tommy Anderson led Eagan to state by finishing fourth and fifth in the section individual competition. Cumming had a two-run time of 58.61 seconds, while Anderson finished in 58.88. Andrew Finnegan (42nd, 1:05.33) and Jesse Anderson (43rd, 1:05.61) also counted toward the Wildcats’ team total. Ross Dembsky finished 50th and Michael Hlas was 93rd for Eagan. Rosemount was ninth in the team standings, but the Irish’s Andrew Ahlberg qualified for state by finishing sixth in the individual competition in 58.97. Eagan finished third in the Section 4 girls team competition, falling 11 points short of a place in the state meet. Two Wildcats, however, qualified individually. Sally Anderson was section runner-up in 59.90 and Gina Serantoni was 15th in 1:04.81. Rosemount was 17th in the girls team competition, with Charley Belden leading the Irish by finishing 63rd.

Eagan forwards Michael Zajac and Will Merchant made the final 10, as did Lakeville South forward Justin Kloos. Other finalists are Jake Randolph and Dom Toninato of Duluth East, Charlie Sampair of Hill-Murray, Grant Opperman of Breck, Judd Peterson of Duluth Marshall, Eric Schurhamer of St. Thomas Academy and Jared Thomas of Hermantown. The winner will be announced at the Mr. Hockey awards banquet at noon Sunday, March 11, at RiverCentre in St. Paul. Zajac, who recently committed to Princeton University, has 42 points (19 goals, 23 assists) in 23 games this season. Merchant also has 42 points (22 goals, 20 assists). They helped lead Eagan to third place in the 2011 state Class AA tournament. Kloos, a University of Minnesota recruit, leads Class AA in scoring with 75 points (31 goals, 44 assists). The Mr. Hockey award, which is in its 28th year, has had one winner from Dakota County – Apple Valley defenseman David Fischer in 2006.

Rechtzigel tops the list Eastview senior Mitch Rechtzigel became his school’s career victories leader in wrestling when he pinned Mathew Mason of South St. Paul in a Feb. 2 match. That was the 148th victory of Rechtzigel’s career, one more than Adam Fokken, who concluded his career with a state championship at 189 pounds in 2001. Fokken was at the South St. Paul match to congratulate Rechtzigel for breaking the record. Rechtzigel has been wrestling on the Eastview varsity since eighth grade. This season he is ranked fourth in Class 3A at 160 pounds by The Guillotine. He has beaten several other ranked wrestlers this season, including Ben Sullivan of Apple Valley and Anton Kalista of Lakeville North. Earlier this season Rechtzigel became the first Eastview wrestler to win his weight class at the Bi-State Invitational in La Crosse, Wis. He has placed at that tournament five times.

SSC hockey race: It’s over Losing a four-goal lead in the final eight minutes of a game against Bloomington

Jefferson could have put a dent in Eagan’s hopes of winning the South Suburban Conference boys hockey championship – if the Wildcats hadn’t already clinched the title. Eagan put it out of reach when it defeated Eastview 7-1 on Feb. 4. The Wildcats’ 6-6 tie with Bloomington Jefferson on Feb. 11 marked the first time this season they did not beat an SSC opponent. Eagan is 14-0-1 (29 points) in the South Suburban with two regular-season games remaining. The Wildcats play host to second-place Burnsville (11-3-1, 23 points) at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. Junior forward Will Peterson scored a hat trick against Jefferson, and his third goal gave Eagan a 6-2 lead with 8:13 remaining in the third period. Jefferson stormed back with four goals in the final 7:39, including the tying goal with 18 seconds left. Eagan (20-2-1 overall) is a lock to be seeded first in the Section 3AA playoffs that start next week.

Irish are swim champs Rosemount completed an undefeated run through South Suburban Conference boys swimming and diving when the Irish won at Prior Lake 95-85 on Feb. 10. Andrew Urness won the 200- and 500yard freestyle races for the Irish, who were 9-0 in conference dual meets. Sheldon Hatlen (200 individual medley) and Luke Dowell (50 freestyle) also won races for Rosemount. Jacob Stern swam the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke but was not credited with first place because the Irish were swimming exhibition by then. Rosemount also had the fastest time in all three relays. Rosemount, ranked fourth in Class AA, leads a group of eight South Suburban Conference teams into the Section 3AA meet Feb. 22-24 at Hidden Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake.

Section time in Apple Valley Apple Valley and Eastview high schools will be hosts of section tournaments Friday, Feb. 17. Apple Valley will be the site of the final three rounds of the Class 3A, Section 3 wrestling team tournament. Quarterfinal matches are 4 p.m., with semifinals at 6 and the championship match at 8. Apple Valley is favored to qualify for state for the 30th straight year. Burnsville, Eagan, Eastview and Rosemount also are among the competing teams. Eastview will hold the Section 2AA gymnastics meet. Lakeville North, No. 6 in Class AA, is the highest-ranked team in Section 2. Lakeville South, also competing in Section 2, is ranked 18th in the state.
