BY MICHAEL RICCI SUN NEWSPAPERS Already a staple in Americana social entertainment, the idea of dinner and a movie has been combined by a new Burnsville business. The Mezz Bistro Lounge, 14401 Burnhaven Drive, is a new upscale restaurant and bar located directly above the Paragon Theaters near Burnsville Center, and its grand opening took place Oct. 27. Attending the opening were Mayor Elizabeth Kautz, other members of the city council, and city staff members. “Everyone was blown away,” said Robert Fronckoski, Paragon director of development. “They loved the space.” Referring to the lounge area, which offers capacity for around LOUNGE: TO PAGE 21

LACC hosts 2011 fall gala Vegas style Support, networking, socializing reasons for event attendance BY MICHAEL RICCI SUN NEWSPAPERS For one night of the year, Lakeville chamber officials and supporters let loose and help celebrate the business community in the south metro. The Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual fall gala Nov. 4,

at Brackett’s Crossing Country Club, 17976 Judicial Road. The event is one of the three main fundraisers for the chamber, and this year’s Vegas-style theme allowed attendees to partake in both silent and live auctions, mock gaming, and entertainment by a Frank Sinatra tribute singer. BV businesses helping 7-year-old with donations for the homeless Promoting effort, allowing drop-off sites for homeless children BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS Not many young children would forego birthday presents for a lot of towels, but one south metro 7-year-old is exhibiting the power of generosity, so much so that he has enlisted the help of several businesses in his effort. Seven-year-old Shrey Pothini of Savage first began helping children of Avenue for Homeless Youth in Minneapolis when he was about to turn 4 years old, substituting birthday presents for new towels to donate. Last year, he collected nearly 120, but this year his efforts have been amped up by two Burnsville businesses, as well as a Savage business, that are more than willing to join the cause. Avenue for Homeless Youth’s mission is to provide emergency shelter, shortterm housing and support services for homeless youth in a safe and nurturing environment. The homeless shelter is also where

Seema Pothini, Shrey’s mother, volunteers time and serves on its board. “Two months before he turned 4, he came to an event there,” Seema said. “He had a tour of the shelter.” According to Seema, Shrey had a good time playing with other youths at the shelter, but even through casual observation the young child noticed that life was different for these kids. “When I showed him the rooms, it really affected him,” Seema said. “Shrey saw the drastic difference between their rooms and what he has.” Seeing clearly the difficulty the kids faced on a daily basis, Shrey inquired about the shelter, asking why they did not have all the toys and other simple pleasures that he enjoyed. Seema responded by explaining they just needed the essentials. “I thought, ‘They are not like me,’” Shrey said. “I have a lot of stuff, and they don’t.” According to Seema, this is what got Shrey started on his quest to help the youths at the shelter, prompting her to begin looking online at the shelter’s website to see what items were needed. “They had almost over 100 things they needed,” Seema said. “So he decided for

his birthday he would ask people to bring towels.” “I thought their stuff was more important, so I told my mom I did not want any presents at all,” Shrey said. “She was very impressed because she knows how much I love the presents, but I said that they needed [the donations].” Seema held her son’s fourth birthday party at their home, but when other children brought presents in addition to the towels Shrey had requested, he expressed his objection. “The next year in his invitations, he underlined ‘no presents,’” Seema said. Since this time, Shrey has been substituting towels in place of presents for himself and donating the towels to the children at Avenue for Homeless Youth. According to Seema, last year she and Shrey had the idea of contacting businesses to help. “Shrey contacted Family Vision Clinic in Savage,” Seema said. “I had told them about the donation drive, and the owner there said he would love to help.” The owner asked Seema and Shrey if his business could be a drop-off location. Through FVC, the drive generated numerous donations, gathering nearly 120 towels and a quilt handmade by clin-

ic employees. “Shrey saw the power of enlisting the help of businesses,” Seema said, adding that this year he wishes to get enough towels, along with the addition of body wash, to last the shelter for one year. The determined Shrey decided to really make an effort to increase the number of donations to the shelter, using his birthday as a donation day. Shrey used to have his birthday celebrations at Savage City Hall with no charge, but a recently implemented room fee policy eliminated the city hall as an option for hosting the event. After thinking about possible locations to hold his birthday party, Shrey remembered an IGM Gymnastics booth this past summer that had been set up during Dan Patch Days, an annual citywide celebration in Savage. “He said that maybe we should contact them,” Seema said of the Burnsville business. “He was adamant about my checking, so I sent an email to the owner explaining what Shrey does.” The owner, Irina Kim, wrote back telling Seema that she would love to host the donation drive, or Shrey’s birthday DONATIONS: TO NEXT PAGE

Donations FROM PREVIOUS PAGE this month, as well as serving as a dropoff site. “They were excited about the work he was doing,” Seema said of IGM staff. But Shrey, as grateful as he is for the donation by IGM, felt there was more that could be done. Living in Savage but often traveling through Burnsville and other south metro communities, the young man had another idea. “He was home sick one day and said, ‘Mom, let’s call Klein Bank,’” Seema said. “He called and asked who he would speak with, and they connected him with the branch manager for all of the south of the river branches.” That person’s name was David Esposito, and he – like many others – was quite taken with Shrey’s drive and determination. “This was the first time that I believe I have ever received a call in the 15-18 years of banking ... from a 7-year-old calling to talk to me about donating to a group such as Avenues,” he said. “From that perspec-

tive it absolutely amazed me.” Esposito added that it was a delight speaking with Shrey and his mother to see what Klein Bank branches could do. Before he knew it, Shrey had convinced the retail banking sales manager to join in the drive. “At our locations for Klein Banks south of the river … we are donation drop-off spots where we have a table set up,” Esposito said. “Then we’re having our staffs in our particular offices get the word out through our teller lines and through interactions with our customers and non-customers.” Esposito added that it just seemed fitting to be able to get the work out as much as humanly possible to all of the bank’s customers who enjoy helping those who are less fortunate. Drop-off sites include Klein Banks: 3000 County Road 42 W., Burnsville; 17305 Cedar Ave., Ste. 110, Lakeville; 14141 Glendale Road, Savage; and 1407 Vierling Drive E., Shakopee; and IGM Gymnastics, 4305 Southcross Drive W., Ste. 120, until Saturday, Nov. 19.

Enjoy the food during the holidays, maybe even overdo it Don’t make it a habit, but indulging a bit is as much tradition as turkey In my last column, I told you that 2011 has been a year of many firsts for me. My wife and I planted, harvested and devoured our inaugural vegetable garden crops and for the first time – and certainly not the last – our home was offered up as a book club safe house for one autumn night. More than a year ago, I married my longtime girlfriend of five years. Many changes encompass this lifealtering agreement, one of which is how to divide spending holidays between our respective families. This is the catalyst for another first for me and also an excuse to indulge in the wondrous foods that circulate the dinner tables during the holiday season. In years past, I traveled to

MATTHEW HANKEY Apple Valley/Eagan Community Editor

my hometown Appleton, Wis., every year for Christmas and Thanksgiving, while my wife sometimes accompanied me. But more often than not, she spent those holidays with her family in the Twin Cities. But alas, marriage has bound our holiday fates together and we are now as inseparable as Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. Wait. Strike that. I meant as inseparable as the Vikings and Minnesota. What? They might leave the state, you say? Nevermind. Let’s just say we’re now inseparable. We concluded to spend every other year with each side of our family for Thanksgiving. Christmas, on the other hand, is more complicated and I will spare those details for another time.

In 2010, we traveled to Appleton to have Thanksgiving with my mom, sister and my sister’s future in-laws. This year, we will stay in Minnesota for Turkey Day. But returning to the point of the column. This Thanksgiving will be the first time my wife and I host her mother’s side of the family for the annual dinner. Now, we will not be accommodating her entire family. When fully assembled, her mom’s side could nearly field a game day roster for the Vikings. At most, we will be hosting a dozen people in our modestsized home. The quarters will be cozy, but that’s how holidays should be. The food assignments will be divided among our guests to alleviate the cooking burden for my wife and I. I’m not sure what our assignment will be, but I do know I will thoroughly enjoy the smorgasbord that will likely fill our table. With the numerous diet

fads and health and wellness awareness that has permeated our society, overblown and unhealthy holiday meals should be enjoyed for what they are. It would be fatalistic to indulge daily in the kinds of foods that comprise a holiday spread, not too mention expensive. But don’t give in to the guilt you may feel for going back for seconds, thirds, what have you. It may seem uncouth to encourage overeating, but if you’re healthy enough to do it, more power to you. Whether we want to acknowledge it, many of us will have too much to eat over the holidays. All I’m saying is embrace it, own it and don’t make it a habit. We should be thankful for a couple days a year: We have the ability to overindulge in delicious foods. I know I will, even if only for a few days. But, it could lead to another first for the upcoming year – a gym membership.

I may have been brainwashed (but, really, books are good) When I was a kid, I would frequently mispronounce words. Frequently. I bet there’s a study done by someone more educated than I on the subject clearly delineating why and how this works, but I’m chalking it up to the massive amount of reading I did as a child coupled with the obverse statistic showing the time spent socializing or speaking with other people. I learned to read and in the process picked up words that I’d never heard spoken before and thus did not know the correct pronunciation. If anyone were to need to shoulder the burden of this

DANIEL CALLAHAN Sun-Current Managing Editor

affectation, I would place that blame squarely on the shoulders of my mother for one particular reason: She made us read. Well, maybe “made” isn’t the right word for it. Instead, she blackmailed us with reading. Let me set the scene. It’s mid-afternoon, and my siblings and I are home from school but lacking any real interest in doing anything

productive. Enter my mother. “Whoever’s not reading is getting chores.” Suddenly we’re all literary enthusiasts. Maybe it’s that childhood conditioning to view reading, books and overall literacy as work-avoided rather than as a chore itself that drove me to become a lifelong lover of literature. After all, post-high school, I went on to an institution of higher education and earned a degree in English, and I work with weaving words on a semi-daily basis. I believe in the idea that being able to effectively communicate is a key factor in getting ahead in this world.

One could make the argument that the speed of communication and transmission of information in this day and age has made it impossible to be anything but an improv artist. We’re forced by the immediacy of our culture to think on our feet and get responses out more and more quickly. And what’s the advice professional authors so often give to aspiring writers? Read. I’d offer that it doesn’t matter where you want to go careerwise; being able to communicate effectively is a required skill for any industry. Those siblings I mentioned CALLAHAN: TO NEXT PAGE

Callahan FROM PREVIOUS PAGE went on to work in advertising, marketing and the culinary arts. For those of you who hoped I would make it through this column without making it even slightly self-referential, I’m sorry, but better luck next time. When I was thinking of the best way to tie the importance of literacy to one of my favorite topics – community involvement – I was sent a mes-

sage about an organization that promotes reading and community all in one swell foop. Little Free Libraries are, to be simplistic, little wooden boxes full of books. With me so far? These little boxes are built, filled with books and put up on private property where people can access them, taking a book and leaving a book. Honestly, I think it’s genius. And not because we lack opportunities to find books in our communities. The Hennepin, Dakota and Anoka county library systems are laudable in their own right for the programs, services and books they provide to the commu-

nities. Sure one can donate money or lobby for larger pieces of the municipal budget pie for the local library. I’m not saying residents of any community shouldn’t patronize their local library ‘cause they certainly should. But there are those who are unable to do these things. Putting a small library at the end of any street brings the books to the potential readers. There are already locations in St. Louis Park, Minneapolis and St. Paul, among others. Putting one up is as simply as, well, putting one up. The really nifty thing about this

sort of movement is the ownership. The whole process requires the participants to, well, participate in a much larger function than if they were simply a user of one of the county libraries. There’s an inherent trust in leaving something out for someone else to literally take. That trust is essential, I think, to the development of any community, and anything we can do, especially something as selfmaintaining as a program like this, is great. For more information on the Little Free Library project and how to get involved, visit littlefreelibrary.org.

DARTS launches winter rescue campaign Volunteers sought to perform winter-related tasks for elder neighbors BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS Not many people enjoy going out in the frigid Minnesota cold to shovel snow, but when the time spent is to help those who are unable to help themselves the temperature seems to rise. Officials with DARTS are in search of volunteers to assist in the organization’s winter rescue campaign. The effort is to connect local volunteers with elder neighbors in Dakota County who need help clearing snow from their sidewalks and driveways. DARTS is a West St. Paul-based nonprofit whose goal is to connect people to services and partnerships that improve their quality of life, help them age well, and enable them to engage in their community. Colleen Fritsch, director of volunteer resources, said DARTS launched the winter campaign in October in order to serve more individuals in need. “We have for many years offered snow removal for older adults who can’t get out and maintain their yards and snow,” Fritsch said. “In the winter time, it’s really a big issue because that can even increase isolation.” For those who DARTS serves, isolation is one of the areas the nonprofit likes to address year-round with the help from volunteers in all communities in Dakota County. Since 1974, the organization has been assisting older adults and caregivers of families with services that meet individuals’ needs as they age. But in the meantime, Fritsch said the winter is especially a time of need for volunteer help. “This year we have made a concerted effort to try an increase the number of elders we are serving with snow removal,” she said. “We have been seeking more volunteers because clearly the more volunteers we have, the more seniors we can serve.” For the campaign, organizers are using the popular social networking site Facebook to help spread the word, as well as sending out emails to those on the organization’s lists. “Even with that we have a waiting list of over 20 seniors that want snow removal this winter that we don’t have enough volunteers to serve,” she said. Wayne Benz of Burnsville is a volun-

teer who has been donating his time to DARTS for nearly eight years. Benz said that helping others, especially older citizens, has been more rewarding to him than those he is helping. “It is nothing that takes a lot of my time. It turned out to be extremely rewarding,” Benz said of his thoughts shortly after contacting the nonprofit to become a volunteer. For Benz, volunteering time to help elder citizens in his community is another way he can give back to his community. His parents live too far from home for him to help, so Benz said this is the next best thing he can do. In the past eight years, Benz has helped several older adults year-round, not just during the winter, and about each of his “friends” – not clients – Benz said there has never been a dull moment while visiting people he has been assigned to. “Quite honestly, it was more rewarding for me,” he said. According to Benz, he enjoys listening to those he visits, often hearing what he described as “fascinating” stories. With reference his first assignment, Benz said he very interested in hearing about the woman’s life, one that spanned more than 90 years. Benz said although she grew up in Aitkin, a town of fewer than 2,200 residents at the 2010 census, she lived an interesting life. She – Helen – moved to New York and even Norway. She was a gospel singer and once recorded a CD. “She even sang for the King of Norway,” Benz said. Barb Tiggemann, manager of volunteer resources, much time is taken to ensure that good matches are made between volunteers and elders in need. “I work with the service coordinators who actually go out and visit these older adults who are requesting a visitor,” she said. “What I do is match a volunteer who would help meet those needs of that older adult and then also match the needs of the volunteer.” According to Tiggemann, cold weather typically produces more requests for assistance, but that does not mean volunteers are not needed year-round. “I think one of the things I see is as the weather gets colder, especially here, we tend to get those requests more,” she said. She added the visits are more about engaging the seniors in the community. “Most visiting requests tend to be not just staying in the home and visiting with them, and providing some conversation and some socialization, it’s also to get them out in the community.”

Fall gala FROM PAGE 1 “We have a lot of customers here. It’s a good opportunity to support the businesses.” But for some, the event meant a little more due to involvement in preparing the gala. Lakeville business representative Trent Hochsprung of C.G.T. Limited is one who took time to serve on the fall gala committee to help ensure the night was a success. “There are a lot of businesses that sponsor and help put this on,” Hochsprung said. “We at C.G.T. are one of the sponsors of it. We donated a few items and our time for setting it up. We also donated a slot machine to giveaway tonight. It’s turned out pretty good.” According to Hochsprung, he personally donated a lot of time as member of the gala committee, giving credit to all on the committee who were involved in the night’s preparation. “We helped decorate the room, set up the auction items, help plan basically the whole thing, and there are many of us who have done it,” said Hochsprung. “It is nice to see everybody. It’s a oncein-a-year night for us to get out.” Hochsprung’s company, C.G.T. limited is in the business of property management, performing landscaping, irrigation, grounds maintenance, weatherization, and other construction services. State Sen. Dave Thompson of Lakeville was yet another who took time to attend the event, and he spoke of the event itself and the importance of supporting local businesses in tough times economically.

“I work for a local business, Twin Cities Power, and there are a number of us here supporting the chamber,” Thompson said. “These are the business owners and people that we are counting on to bring our economy back and create jobs. Anything we can do to support that effort I think is important.” Angie McNamara of Lakeville is an independent consultant for Thirty-One, a women’s accessory business. She similarly took a moment to comment on the state of the economy and hope for the future. “In this economy, I want to see a lot of the businesses succeed,” she said, adding she believes that Lakeville will be among the many communities to grow greatly once the economy recovers. Todd Bornhauser, executive director at the Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce, said the turnout for the annual event was pretty typical, with an estimate of 185 to 200 people. “We have members and friends of members spending the evening with us,” Bornhauser said. “This is one of our three fundraising activities we do for the chamber for its internal operations.” Jeanne Hutter, director of marketing, communications and tourism at the Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau, said the evening is of great benefit for those who attend each year. “It’s our black-tie event, and it is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” she said. “It’s a fabulous networking opportunity for people, and it’s a place where they can come and have some fun and really showcase their business as a sponsor.”

U of M president addresses Rotary Club of Burnsville Provides update on first four months in position, plans for school’s future BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS As the 16th president of the University of Minnesota, Eric Kaler jokingly said he was channeling that other 16th president, prompting another to plead that he and his wife do not attend the theater. Following this lighthearted introduction, UMN President Eric Kaler spoke before members of the Burnsville, Apple Valley, and Eagan Rotary Clubs, as well as members of the Dakota County Chamber of Commerce 12 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at the Nicollet Inn, 14204 Nicollet Ave., Burnsville. Kaler provided an update on his first four months in his new position as president and discussed his vision and priorities for the university in research, teaching and outreach. One point of emphasis made by Kaler centered on students in the past and the dramatic changes that have occurred to right a wrong.

“Let’s be honest, 15 or 20 years ago, the undergraduate experience at the U was not all that it should have been,” Kaler said. “We know from alumni surveys that people who went to college at the U felt disengaged, and that was reflected in poor retention rates and awful graduation rates.” But, Kaler said, this has changed very dramatically. The president proceeded to reference two students who have stood out in their respective fields, but only as a teaser. “Two special students? Sure. But our entire incoming freshman class is totally special,” he said. “It is, by all measures, the best qualified group of first year students in U history.” Kaler added that the U had around 40,000 applicants this year and enrolled around 5,400. He also indicated that the ACT scores this year were the highest ever. Turning his attention to the university’s presence as the state’s only public research university, Kaler stressed the importance of such a facility. “Why should you care about having a research university in your backyard? Because all of the university’s campuses are homes for the innovation that makes

of his administration: excellence, access, diversity and research. Kaler desires for the university to be synonymous with other research universities, such as Berkeley, Michigan, North Carolina and the University of California-Los Angeles. “We must strive to keep the U accessible to all qualified Minnesota students, regardless of their family income,” he said. With regard to diversity, Kaler said, “We must work with our K-12 system to close the alarming decline in sciences and math teaching and learning, and the deplorable achievement gap between white students and children of color.” Concluding with the topic of research and its importance, the president said this is a “our investments in our research enterprise drive a high rate of return.” Kaler cited statistics that indicated the UMN’s annual economic impact on the sate was equal to the combined impact of all eight research universities in the Boston metropolitan area. “Last year our impact was estimated at $8.6 billion,” he said. “According to a 2003 study done by a Boston consulting firm … the economic impact of all those schools was about $7 billion annually.”

Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid symptoms. It will be held on Wednesday, November 16th at 7:00 PM. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!

Burnsville church honors All Saints Day Pastors and attendees alike of St. James Lutheran Church, 3650 Williams Drive, Burnsville, honored All Saints Day during their regular church service Sunday, Nov. 6, continuing on a tradition that began last year at St. James. All Saints Day is a Christian holiday honoring all those who live a life of love.

The day is celebrated by many churches and often includes the reading of names of those church members who passed within the last year. As with last year, the Rev. Walt Lichtenberger has invited St. James members to bring framed photographs of loved ones who have died to the All Saints Day celebration. The photographs will then be placed around the church before, during and after worship services.

Lounge FROM PAGE 1 170 patrons, the area features casual seating for socializing and is adjacent to a pair of traditional restaurant seating areas, as well as two theaters with state-of-the-art technology for optimal movie viewing. “As a theater, we have all digital projectors, the Sony 4K technology,” Fronckoski said. “We are one of two theaters in Minnesota with that.” The second theater is also owned and operated by Paragon and is located in Rochester. According to Paragon Food and Beverage Director Andrew Holmes, the entire upper level – which is home to two movie screens, the social lounge, and traditional seating that includes the “Van Gogh Room” – can be rented for nearly any occasion, such as birthdays, corporate gatherings, anniversaries, and more. “It’s a great place to rent out,” Fronckoski said. The Van Gogh Room is removed from the social lounge and other seating. It is a more relaxed environment for patrons to spend time before or after a movie, or for those just seeking to gather and socialize for an evening. It features LED telelvision screens mounted on the walls with couchstyle seats and coffee tables. Holmes added that the room is Van Gogh exclusive with regard to the beverages offered, adding that so far the Mezz is the only location in the state that can make that claim. But Holmes was also quick to comment on the menu, since he has experience creating unique dining concepts at awardwinning restaurants and clubs in Europe, Las Vegas, and nationwide hotel brands Sussex and Kessler. “We are bringing fine dining to the … theater experience,” Holmes said. “Just because you are at the movies, doesn’t mean you have to eat nachos for dinner. You can still find your favorite concession treats in the lobby, but our menu is not what you would expect to find at a movie theater.” Inspired by the opportunity to change how people think of eating at the movies, the menu mixes American, Mediterranean, Asian and Caribbean dishes. “The Mezz … is unique in that it offers fresh, interesting food and innovative drinks along with the only premier VIP luxury movie-going experience in the south metro,” said Mike Whalen, Paragon CEO. “We offer something for everyone: a lively bar, great takeout, and a sit-down restaurant perfect for a date, an outing with friends or a special event, whether you are seeing a movie or not.” Concurring with Whalen, Fronckoski and Holmes said part of the Mezz’s draw is

The main lounge, opposite the bar, where patrons can relax before dinner, a movie, both, or one at the other new Mezz Bistro Lounge is located directly above Paragon Theaters near the Burnsville Center. (Photo by Michael Ricci – Sun Newspapers) its flexibility in offering any kind of evening – be it dinner and a movie, dinner before a movie, just dinner, time spent socializing, or any combination. Holmes added that many menu items were created with the filmgoers in mind. With mezz meaning “small plate” and tapas meaning “hand food,” according to Holmes, these items are much more conducive to dining in a movie atmosphere with some space limitations. The two theaters also feature seating with adjustable arm rests to create a “love seat,” according to Fronckoski, as well as around 75 “premier” seats for those 21 years of age and up, which account for the last four rows in each theater. “When you purchase your ticket, in person or online, you’re able to change the seat and row,” Fronckoski said. He added that those just arriving would have the opportunity to choose from what is available. Unlike other attempts at the same concept, Fronckoski said the big difference between the two is the quality of films. “We are doing Hollywood blockbusters opening weekend. They were doing second-run movies,” Fronckoski said, adding that these were movies that had already appeared in major theaters.

The Mezz Bistro Lounge, in addition to a large lounge area and bar, features traditional restaurant seating.

PUBLIC SAFETY Chimney fire serves as reminder for safety Members of the Lakeville Fire Department were dispatched to a possible chimney fire around 2:30 a.m., Oct. 28, at 19121 Jewel Path. Lakeville police on the scene reported seeing smoke from the chimney and basement area. Police also reported that all occupants were out of the home. The first fire officer on the scene, also reporting seeing smoke coming from the chimney and basement, requested a second alarm for more resources. All four fire stations and personnel responded to the call. The fire was contained to the chimney with some fire found inside the exterior wall by the chimney. As a result, the home suffered minor smoke and fire damage. The homeowner was able to remain in the home after fire crews completed extinguishing the fire in the chimney area. There were no injuries to report. Crews cleared scene at 5 a.m. after the fire was extinguished. Lakeville Fire Chief Mike Meyer said this should serve as a reminder for individuals to have their fireplace cleaned prior to the winter season and have a pro-

fessional chimney inspection a regular basis.

Guilty verdict arrives in 2009 fatal crash case A 2009 crash that claimed the life of 88year-old Everett Letterly of Prior Lake resulted in a guilty verdict. According to Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom, Jeffrey Arthur Martin, 39, of Lakeville was found guilty Oct. 31 by a Dakota County jury of criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular injury, both of which are felonies, along with child endangerment and third-degree driving while intoxicated, both gross misdemeanors, in connection with a fatal crash that occurred Dec. 24, 2009, in Lakeville. Letterly’s wife was injured in the crash. At the time of the crash, Martin was driving with his three children, ages 4, 9 and 10, and his blood alcohol level was .17 percent. Martin faces up to 10 years and/or up to $20,000 in fines for the first count, criminal vehicular homicide and up to three years and/or up to $10,000 in fines for criminal vehicular injury. Both the third and fourth counts, child endangerment and third degree driving

while impaired, hold penalties of up to three years and/or up to $3,000 in fines. Judge David Knutson ordered a pre-sentence investigation and chemical dependency evaluation and set the sentencing date for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, in Hastings.

Lakeville fire report for week of Oct. 24 to 30 Members of the Lakeville Fire Department, from Oct. 24 to Oct. 30, responded to 11 calls for service: one chimney fire, two unauthorized burns, one vehicle accident cleanup, one medical, one gas leak, one diesel fuel spill, one smoke scare, and three false alarms. Fire Prevention Tip According to officials with the LFD, daylight savings time is a good time to replace smoke detector and carbon monoxide batteries. To keep your family safe from fire, remember and make use of the following tips: • Every month test your smoke alarms by pushing the “test” button. Follow testing instructions in your owner’s manual. • Once a month carefully vacuum the inside of a batter-powered unit using a soft

bristle brush. If your alarms are electrically connected, turn off the power and vacuum the outside vents only. Test your alarms after cleaning them. • Smoke alarms don’t last forever. Those more than 10 years old should be replaced.

Dumb criminal draws attention to himself Sometimes crime rolls right up to Lakeville police officers. Sgt. Bill Gerl had just stopped at his house on his lunch break one day a few weeks ago when a neighbor came up and knocked on his door. The neighbor said that there was some type of commotion between two carloads of people going on just down the street. Gerl jumped in his squad and pulled up behind the two cars and saw two groups of people arguing. What he found out when he talked with them was that the individuals from one car had stolen money from a person in the other car and then fled. The second car, with the victim, chased them until the suspects decided to stop. Gerl arrested the suspect for simple robbery, and one of the assisting squads took the suspect into custody and transported him to a detention facility.

EDUCATION LAPS placed on 2nd annual AP Honor Roll The Lakeville Area Public School District is one of fewer than 400 school districts in the nation, and one of 11 school districts in Minnesota, being honored by the College Board with a place on the second annual Advanced Placement Honor Roll. The recognition is for simultaneously increasing access to advanced placement coursework while maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of three or higher on AP exams. “Achieving both of these goals is the ideal scenario for a district’s advanced placement program, because it indicates that the district is successfully identifying motivated, academically-prepared students who are likely to benefit most from AP coursework,” according to the district. “Since 2009 the Lakeville School District increased the number of students participating in AP exams from 914 to 1,034 while improving the percentage of students earning AP exam scores of three or higher from 78 percent in 2009 to 79 percent in 2011.” The majority of U.S. colleges and universities grant college credit or advanced

A&J Painting is a family owned and operated business. A&J Painting is a family owned and operated business that was started 15 years ago with my sons Andrew, Jeremiah, and David. In today’s economic climate we have maintained a healthy business due to our professional approach and work ethic that carries the highest standards of quality for every job. We have thrived over the years because of the volume of callbacks and customer referrals from previously contracted jobs. No contract is too big or too small for our company. A&J Painting operates as a licensed and insured painting company that offers trained and skilled (journeyman) employee’s to paint and remodel your home or business. All of our employee’s have been with the company for several years and each has been trained to the highest standards. We take pride in the honesty, integrity, and character of the young men we have employed. My son Andrew is a highly skilled and trained carpenter. He also does taping, knock down ceilings, tiling, installs plumbing, lighting fixtures, countertops and offers many types of custom carpentry. Andrew operates a professional spray booth off site for finishes on cabinetry and furniture. His current focus is on remodeling, updating, and modernizing

homes and businesses. Andrew’s perfectionist approach to every job and the extent of his skill set have made him one of the best craftsman in the Twin Cities. My other two sons run the painting end of the business and are also professionally trained Artists. Jeremiah attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and later studied under the mentorship of the nationally renowned portrait and fresco painter Mark Balma. David similarly was accepted into a full time master apprenticeship program at the young age of 16 at the highly respected Atelier Lack Studio. We hope to have the opportunity to do so with you as well. We are only a call or e-mail away to offer you a free estimate of our professional services.

Similar to last year’s program, veterans are welcome to attend and are encouraged to wear the colors of their branch of the military. Students will be encouraged to wear red, white and blue. At Rahn Elementary, the Veterans Day program will take place 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the gym. Invitations were sent to families asking for veterans to attend. There will be songs by kindergarten and first-grade students, a skit, and banners about citizenship created by students in grades 2-6. New Rosemount research turbine blowin’ in the wind UMore Park in Rosemount to host wind research station BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS The UMore Park in Rosemount will be the host site for one of the most unique wind research stations in the country for at least the next 15 years. The University of Minnesota is part of an academic and wind industry consortium that will use the wind station, which is comprised of a 420-foot wind turbine and a 425-foot meteorological research tower. The university is one of three nationwide to be awarded a U.S. Department of Energy wind research grant in 2009. The university’s $7.9 million grant will fund this research group, called EOLOS, which will conduct wind energy research using data collected from the 2.5 megawatt wind turbine and meteorological tower, said Jeffrey Marr, Associate Director of Applied Research at the university’s St. Anthony Falls Laboratory in Minneapolis. This project aims to provide research that will help further the national goal of having 20 percent of all electricity generated by wind power by 2030, Marr said. “The goal of this consortium is trying to move us toward this 2030 goal,” Marr said. Marr worked with the project’s principal investigator and project director Fotis Sotiropoulos, who is also a university professor, to write the grant application. Research at the new wind station will focus on capturing more energy from the wind, improving wind farm design, mini-

mizing the turbine’s impact on radar, reducing noise, preventing ice build-up on the blades, monitoring turbine performance and improving turbine blade structure. “It’s not just a turbine, but it’s a research site,” Marr said. “It’s a very unique research site. We’re very lucky in Minnesota and Dakota County to have that facility.” The wind turbine will be connected to the local grid and will supply electricity to local residents. “When running at its maximum capacity, this turbine could produce enough electricity for 600 to 800 homes depending on the time of year,” said Marr. The turbine will be routinely taken off line to conduct sensor and materials analyses. On average, the turbine will be in operation about 70 percent of the time with downtime associated with low wind, maintenance or research activities, Marr said. The weather tower is located to the south of the wind turbine and will measure wind speeds and weather conditions. “The tower has extra sensors to understand how the turbines move,” Marr said. “The data that comes off this site is very special and is very desirable for U.S. and others…and ultimately, this is all about lowering the cost of using electricity.” The city of Rosemount recently announced long-term plans to develop the property at UMore Park. Plans envision a “community of the future” that would incorporate advances in urban planning and energy conservation and that could be home to 20,000-30,000 people in the next 30 years, according to the city.

(Photo by Matthew Hankey – Sun Newspapers) “The city of Rosemount is very supportive of that kind of work and it is very consistent with the goals of development of UMore,” said Kim Lindquist, community development director for the city. The public commissioning for the wind station was Oct. 25 at UMore Park. Marr said roughly 300 people attended the ceremony, which included representatives from the university, the city of Rosemount, wind industries, the DOE, and local schools students and staff. “It was a big celebration,” Marr said. “It was cold, but it was nice and windy, which is what we wanted.”

Wind industry consortium partners include Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power; Syracuse University; Dakota County Technical College; Mesabi Range Community and Technical College; 3M; Barr Engineering; Clipper Windpower, LLC; United Technologies Research Center; Lockheed Martin; Micron Optics; Ryan Companies; WindLogics; Xcel Energy; Sandia National Laboratories; and National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Blaze soccer hopeful about future after reaching state title game Wayzata wins Class AA girls soccer championship in shootout

Girls cross country team second in Class AA, up one spot from last year

BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Playing in the state championship game wasn’t something Burnsville necessarily anticipated at the start of girls soccer season. But now the Blaze is anxious to get back there. “It was an eye-opener for us to find out we were better than most of the teams in the state,” Burnsville goalkeeper Meghann Rudolph said. “Now I’m thinking, let’s do this again next year. We’ve got a good team and we know we can play at this level.” With many of its top players returning from a team that lost to Wayzata 2-1 in a shootout in the Class AA championship game, Burnsville figures to start next season near the top of the state ranking, if not at the top. Blaze coach John Soderholm knows there is danger in trying to project that far ahead. Exceeding expectations – as the Blaze did this year – was not easy, but meeting them next year could be even more difficult. “Our girls really worked hard,” Soderholm said. “There are no tears, no disappointment. If I told them in August they would finish second in the state, they wouldn’t have believed me. “I told them they had the potential to play in the state tournament, but I thought we were a year away from winning the championship.” As it turned out, the Blaze was an eyelash from winning the Class AA title this year. Burnsville (17-5) had a huge scoring splash in its state semifinal against Centennial, with Alyssa Blahnik scoring three goals and assisting on two others in a 5-2 victory. Blahnik opened the scoring in the second half of the Nov. 3 championship game at the Metrodome, pulling away from a defender during a 30-yard sprint before finishing with her left foot for her 34th goal of the season.

Cougars are upwardly mobile at state BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Khamvongsa hit the crossbar with her shot. Wayzata’s Chelsey Ulrich scored to give her team the state championship. In shootouts, “you’re usually hoping to stop one,” said Rudolph. She saved one, and Wayzata hit the crossbar on another attempt. Rudolph made 11 saves in the game’s first 100 minutes. Wayzata won its last two state tournament games (including a semifinal victory over No. 1-seeded Lakeville North) in shootouts. Burnsville would have preferred not to reach that stage, but the Trojans’ defense made that difficult. “They have a strong defense,” John

Lakeville South is on a progression that has people wondering if big things could be in store for the Cougars in girls cross country. Granted, finishing second in the state meet – which the Cougars did last weekend – is a pretty big deal. But consider this: In 2009, South was fourth at the state meet. Last year the Cougars were third, and this year they took second place. That leaves only one spot to advance, and Lakeville South could be ready to make that move next fall, as eight of its top nine runners will return. Monticello, the 2011 state Class AA champion, graduates three of its top seven. No. 1-ranked Monticello finished 25 points ahead of second-ranked Lakeville South at the Class AA state meet Nov. 5 at St. Olaf College. South ninth-graders Kaytlyn Larson and Annie Brekken earned spots on the All-State team. Larson was sixth overall (fifth among runners in the team competition) in 14 minutes, 36.7 seconds. Brekken was 17th overall (12th among team runners) in 14:47.7. It was the second consecutive All-State honor for Brekken, who finished 25th at last year’s Class AA meet. The difference in the team competition was Monticello getting four runners to the finish line before Lakeville South got its third runner there. Monticello’s top three finishers, and three of the top five, are seniors. Sophomore Megan Lubow (15:18.1), senior Megan Kilbride (15:19.7) and sophomore Erin Kilbride (15:38.3) completed Lakeville South’s top five. Sophomore Jenny Machaj (15:48.7) and ninth-grader Caraline Slattery (16:17.0) also ran at state.

Wayzata’s Kiana Nickel tied the game on a header about midway through the second half. In a game that featured several good scoring opportunities for each team, those were the only goals in 100 minutes. Blahnik had a chance to end it in the final minute of the first overtime but Wayzata goalkeeper Mara Dougherty came off her line to block the shot. Each team scored on three of its first five shootout kicks. Maggie Soderholm, Hannah Keirstead and Blahnik converted for Burnsville. In the sixth round, Burnsville’s Tiana

North spikers win another 5-set duel with Cougars Panthers get chance to defend state title BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Abby Monson isn’t on the floor to supply offense for the Lakeville North volleyball team. So, naturally she had the Panthers’ most important kill of the season. Calling it a “kill” is enough to make the sophomore libero laugh. Forced to make the third contact on a point late in the Class 3A, Section 3 championship match against Lakeville South, she bumped the ball with her back to the net. It floated over and found a vacant spot in the middle of the court on South’s side. That gave North a 14-13 lead in the deciding fifth game. Sami Flattum’s solo block on match point ended it as the Panthers defeated No. 1-ranked Lakeville South 25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13 in the section final Nov. 5 at Simley High School. “I was very surprised” to score that key point, Monson said. “But it was really exciting because I never get kills. I’m out there for defense and passing.” The victory gives Lakeville North a chance to defend its state Class 3A championship. The Panthers (25-5) were seeded second in the state tourney and will play Bemidji (24-8) in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Xcel Energy

Center. Blaine (27-2) is the tournament’s top seed. Lakeville North’s players go to state knowing it can’t be tougher than what they went through to win their section. Four of the state’s top seven teams in Class 3A made the Section 3 semifinals: Lakeville South (first), Eagan (second), Lakeville North (fifth) and Bloomington Jefferson (seventh). Lakeville North defeated Eagan 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 in the section semifinals Nov. 2. “We decided we weren’t going to let anything stop us,” senior outside hitter Kelly Nizzari said. “We’d worked too hard.” Lakeville South (26-2) took over the top spot in the state Class 3A rankings in midOctober. Lakeville North was the only team to beat the Cougars this season, doing so twice, both in five-set matches. South, seeking its first trip to the state tournament, is left to watch North play there – and presumably root for the Panthers to win it again. “You’d better believe it,” South coach Jen Nelson said. “We want North to go on and play well at the state tournament. “We’re disappointed we didn’t win, but it was a great match, and we were assured of having a Lakeville team in the state tournament.” It wasn’t a smooth ride for Lakeville North in the section final as the Panthers

had to overcome numerous serving errors and net violations. They also had to find an answer for South senior McKell Anderson, who was hammering kills into the corners and down the line. “We must have missed 20 serves tonight,” Nizzari said. “That’s almost a whole game. But we were able to come back. “In our match against Eagan, we were down at least five points in every game and came back every time. So we knew we could do it again tonight.” North coach Steve Willingham said the Panthers’ victory was a testament to mental toughness. “I can’t say enough about that,” he said. “After the second game, I lost count of how many errors we had. But these girls have been tested. I’d put our schedule up against anybody in the state. We’ve had 15 matches against teams that were ranked.” Sophomore Alyssa Goehner had 20 kills and six blocks for North. Senior middle hitter Nicole Latzig had 15 kills and seven blocks. Flattum finished with 12 kills. Lakeville South’s seven seniors now have to plan their future. Three of them were to sign with Division II college volleyball programs on Nov. 9. Anderson is going to Southwest Minnesota State, Kaitlin Van Winkle will attend Minnesota State, Moorhead and Monica Turner will go to Minnesota-Duluth.

Blaze cross country takes a shot at the Class AA boys title BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS The popular assumption going into the state Class AA boys cross country meet was that it was Stillwater’s to lose. But at least one other team wasn’t buying it. “To be honest, we thought we could win,” Burnsville coach Jeff Webber said. “That was our expectation. And we were close.” How close? There were several ways the Blaze could have made up the 23point difference between itself and Stillwater at the Nov. 5 state meet in Northfield. The easiest might have been for its No. 5 runner to finish 32 seconds faster, which would have been a 24-place improvement. Easier said than done, though. In the end, finishing second at a meet for which it barely qualified had to be considered a good result. The Blaze runners were pleased, but not necessarily satisfied. “I think we can still train harder and

run better,” said Burnsville senior Cole O’Brien, who had his third consecutive individual top-five finish at state. Burnsville has at least one more meet left this season. The Blaze is one of four Minnesota teams expected to compete in the Nike Regionals in Sioux Falls, S.D., this weekend. Burnsville’s first four runners finished in the top 13 among those in the team competition. O’Brien (third among team competition runners, fifth overall) and Abdullahi Salan (seventh, 18th) are veterans of the state meet. The next two Blaze runners, ninthgrader Faysol Mamoud and Ali Ahmed, are in their first year of competitive cross country. “They’re the most talented runners I’ve ever seen,” O’Brien said of Mamoud and Ahmed.

“Faysol doesn’t even know how much talent he has,” Salan said, “and he hates running 5,000 meters.” At the Section 3AA meet, Burnsville’s top four runners all placed in the top 10. That helped the Blaze place second in the section, edging an Eastview that had five finishers in the top 18. The top two teams in each section advanced to the state meet. O’Brien, who Webber said has been trying to shake an illness for a couple of weeks, finished fifth overall in 15 minutes, 46.3 seconds. He was Class AA runner-up last year and fourth at state as a sophomore. Salan was next for Burnsville in 16:06.7, and his 18th-place finish earned him All-State recognition. Mamoud was 12th among runners in the team competition and 27th overall in 16:13.9. One

‘They’re the most talented runners I’ve ever seen.’

place behind was Ahmed, who finished in 16:14.2. Junior Shawn Wong was 80th among team competition runners in 17:33.1. Sam Houching (18:12.5) and Jake Stevens (18:13.4) also ran for the Blaze. It was Burnsville’s fourth consecutive trip to the state meet and its third straight top-four finish. Webber said he is convinced the Blaze can go back to state next year, despite graduating its top two runners. “Get that out of your mind,” Webber told his runners about the upcoming graduation losses. “We can be even better next year. It can happen.”

Boys meet notes • Lakeville North’s Ben Saxton, the 2011 state boys Nordic skiing champion, is an All-State performer in another sport. He finished 22nd at the state Class AA cross country meet last weekend, finishing in 16:10.4. The top 25 finisher earn All-State recognition.

Cross country FROM PAGE 27 Sophomore Marich Gallagher and ninthgrader Erin Meyers were alternates. The state meet was the only time all season the Cougars didn’t place first at a meet. South won the Classic Suburban Conference and Section 1AA championships. Its regular-season victories included the Apple Jack Invitational in Lakeville and the Eagle Invitational in Apple Valley. Three other South Suburban Conference teams qualified for the state meet: Eagan (ninth place), Prior Lake (13th) and Lakeville North (14th).

Lakeville North Junior Taylor Perkins finished 38th

Soccer FROM PAGE 27 Soderholm said. “We thought we were ready for it. We work hard at developing continuity between our midfielders and forwards, but we didn’t do it as well tonight as we would have liked.” The championship game featured teams of differing state tournament pedigrees. Wayzata, which won its sixth championship, has missed the state playoffs only three times since 1990. Burnsville hadn’t played at state since 1996, and its last appearance in a championship game was in 1993. “The biggest thing we have to remember is we haven’t been here in 15 years,” Rudolph said. “Then we took second place, out of how many teams? We have to be proud of this. “We were going after the championship, but in the end, first or second, I’ll take it.” Burnsville has 13 underclassmen on its roster, and several of the Blaze’s top players, including Blahnik, Abby Soderholm and Keirstead, are sophomores. Wayzata, which graduates six seniors, might be similarly positioned for another

overall (21st among team competition runners) to lead the Panthers, who finished 14th at the state Class AA meet. Lakeville North ran at state for the third consecutive year. Perkins’ 4-kilometer time was 15:09.9. Emma Johnson, a senior, was 58th overall in 15:22.9. Also in the Panthers’ state lineup were junior Haley Eskierka (15:56.1), senior Hannah Evers (16:14.8), eighth-grader Chloee Sagmoe (16:25.3), sophomore Riley Broughten (16:27.3) and ninth-grader Elle Severson (16:58.6). Lakeville North qualified for state by finishing second in the Section 1AA meet.

Burnsville Blaze sophomore Vivian Hett was 40th in the Class AA girls meet in 15:12.8. It was the second consecutive appearance at state for Hett, who was 78th last season. Hett was the Section 3AA runner-up. run at the state tournament.

Lakeville North 4th Lakeville North was undefeated in its first 20 games but lost its last two to finish fourth in the Class AA tournament. After a shootout loss to Wayzata in the semifinals Oct. 31, the Panthers had less than 24 hours to prepare for a third-place game against Centennial. Centennial scored with 2 minutes, 43 seconds remaining to win 2-1. Lakeville North finished 18-2-2. Junior forward Simone Kolander scored Lakeville North’s goal with Alexa Trakalo assisting. The Panthers were trying to become the third team from Lakeville to play in a state girls soccer championship game. Lakeville High School made it in 2004 but lost to Wayzata in the Class AA final. Lakeville South won the 2007 state title.

All-tourney team Burnsville’s Blahnik, Rudolph, Khamvongsa and Hannah Freden were named to the all-tournament team. Also selected were Lakeville North’s Simone Kolander and Breanna Sollie. Sophomore forward Kellie McGahn was named from Eastview, which lost to Centennial in a shootout in the quarterfinal round.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

PREGNANT? CONSIDERING ADOPTION? You choose from families nationwide. LIVING EXPENSES PAID. Abby's One True Gift Adoptions. 866-4136292, 24/7

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Process mail! Pay weekly! Free supplies! Bonuses! Genuine opportunity! Start immediately! Helping Homeworkers since 1992. 1-888-302-1516. www.howtowork-fromhome.com

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
