Highway 13 from Burnsville to West St. Paul is due for a facelift as part of a state-led resurfacing project. As part of a larger $357 million project that will span four years, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin an $11.4 million road resurfacing project from the Burnsville’s western border, through Eagan, and ending at in West St. Paul. Construction on the road is scheduled to begin in May and end April 31. The 12mile span of highway will undergo the milling the road’s top layer and then replacing it with asphalt. EDUCATION ISD 191 teacher awarded by state school board group The Minnesota School Boards Association recently honored Vicki Roy for her years of service on the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 Board of Education. Roy recently retired from the District 191 Board of Education. Ironman bicycle ride planning underway Second annual Gran Fondo ride accompanying event BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS The event may be months away, but the preparation required to accommodate thousands of riders has already begun on what has been described as the kickoff to the spring bicycling season.

The 2012 Minnesota Ironman Bicycle ride will begin as well as end in Lakeville Sunday, May 6, Lakeville North High School, 19600 Ipava Ave., Lakeville. The event marks the 13th consecutive year the state’s longest, and one of the largest, tours to start and finish within the city. The shorter routes are almost entirely within city limits. The Ironman bicycle ride is the primary means of funding for the

Minnesota Council of Hostelling International, whose mission is to develop culturally sensitive world citizens through educational programs, promotion of responsible travel, and positive hostelling experiences. According to Jon Ridge, MIBR director, the Ironman ride is the perfect way to kick off the spring biking season, and it continues to offer a number of features to which riders can look forward. This includes four route options. “This allows for all levels of riders to find a distance that meets their

interest and level of riding challenge,” Ridge said. “When the weather is lousy we often see riders switch to a shorter route allowing them to still finish the ride even on a bad weather day.” Ridge added that sections of each route may follow along with other routes, but they split off as needed to cover the various distances offered. Ironman FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “At this 22-mile mark, riders will choose between the 68 or 100-mile route,” Ridge said. “The 68-mile route continues through New Prague and on to the second rest stop of Lonsdale before returning to Lakeville. The 100mile route will offer rest stops in Le Sueur, Montgomery and Lonsdale.” The ride continues to offer two popular route options of 17 and 30 miles, which wind through Lakeville, Prior Lake and Burnsville. These shorter routes offer fully stocked rest stops. Though the Ironman event may be a dream to the Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce due to the thousands of people who will be descending upon the city the first Sunday of May, organizers still have much work to do. Lakeville Police Chief Tom Vonhof said the first planning meeting for the upcoming Ironman ride this year occurred March 31, 2011, and one command staff person attends all the planning sessions. But certainly more than one of Lakeville’s finest is needed the day of the event. “We dedicate one supervisor for the

all-day event, and in 2011 we had a total of 22 officers, including both sworn and volunteer police reserve, work the event,” he said of the manpower used last year. “All of the costs of the additional police staffing are paid for by the Ironman organizers.” Vonhof added that the biggest challenge each year is planning and coordinating the event and that due to shorter routes being almost entirely in Lakeville, “there is a significant amount of coordination needed between the … police, parks, and public works departments. To facilitate the planning and coordination, we have [many] planning sessions with Hostelling International.” The chief, however, noted the one area in which all concerned benefit. “We are very fortunate in Lakeville to have a site in LNHS, which is very conducive to handling the volume of both people and vehicles associated with the event,” he said. “The volume impact of persons and vehicles is also lessened to some degree by the variety of the lengths of the ride routes, as not everyone shows up at the same time of the day to begin their ride.” Individual riders have until Feb. 16 to sign up and receive a $5 discount. Mike Popovich of Burnsville is a 59year-old rider who has taken part in the bicycle ride each of the past four years, in addition to several years prior, since the ride was relocated to Lakeville more than 12 years ago. “I really enjoy it. It’s a very serious hobby with me,” he said, adding that he owns many bicycles with the newest being around 15 years old. “It’s got a lot of intrinsic value in the machine.” Popovich said he is not obsessed with the activity like some riders, but he instead takes pride in getting the most out of his ride, literally. “I don’t have all of the latest and greatest stuff,” he said. Popovich said he has one bike that he has ridden more than 10,000 miles. Much like even organizers, the 59year-old Burnsville man has already begun training for this year’s event. “This time of the year I do a lot of strength training, alternating with

inside bike riding,” he said. Popovich said he uses a wind trainer – a device that allows one to ride a bike indoors while remaining stationary - to help prepare, along with maintaining his equipment. “Those are just the things that you prepare for,” he said. “You just want to succeed, so you set yourself up to do that.” Popovich defines success by enjoying the ride and taking all of the scenery in, not finishing as quickly as possible since the event is a tour and not a race. “The main objective is to complete the ride and have fun doing it,” he said. However, this does not mean that the ride comes without challenges, such as cold weather and even snow once in a while. “At least if you are in decent shape, the physical is easier,” he said. “You just need to get past the mental aspect.” According to Popovich, this early in the season he starts out riding his wind trainer 35-40 minutes and adds five minutes each week until leveling out at 75-90 minutes. Popovich said what he enjoys most about the annual event is the ride itself and camaraderie with other riders, adding, “I look forward to it ever year. It’s like opening day.”

No worries here being single on Valentine’s Day Just so I understand this, we have a day designated for the sole purpose of individuals’ expressing love to their spouses or significant others, but what about the other 364 days of the year? Are people precluded from expressing these sentiments on any one of these days? Many people get blue around this day simply because they happen to be single. One blogger said there are two types of single people. There are the ones who watch movies at home “sulking” and “eating ice cream,” but the second group consists of people like me who couldn’t care less. On that single point I agree, but the rest of this blog was filled with a bunch of nonsense about how singles can party and get “wasted” at a bar with other singles, suggesting this is the ideal situation in which to be because an “impromptu evening at a bar” is the prefect way to meet some-

MICHAEL RICCI Burnsville/Lakeville Community Editor body new.” Sure, when kids ask how their parents met, they can tell them they found each other stumbling drunk – excuse me, “wasted” - in a bar on Valentine’s Day. Now that is as romantic as it gets. This was not meant to be an indictment of bloggers or the socalled experts, as I read a lot of material with similar content, all of which would be obvious to the average person. But now that I find myself on the subject, I will say that most of these people on this issue have little clue as to what they’re talking about. Since when is being single on Valentine’s Day anything any-

one should be ashamed of or pitied? My apathy for Valentine’s Day is related to the fact I can’t remember the last time I was at all concerned about it, and this applies equally to when I have not been single. Perhaps I have been fortunate in having been involved with women who feel the same as I do toward this Hallmark holiday. I am guessing I’m not the only person. There has to be many, many couples that equally see the silliness of worrying about getting the card, the flowers, the candy, and the nice dinner. Rather than repeat the advice of so-called experts on this subject – who suggest that we focus on the positive, show others that we care, focus on other aspects of life, travel, pamper ourselves, and spend our time on a hobby – I prefer to look at the bigger picture.

What I hope would be a large percentage of the population, I am more concerned about other pressing issues. And if I choose to express feelings, I certainly do not need Hallmark to do it for me. The last time I checked, a card is unable to demonstrate real human affection and is only available for a few weeks out of the year. This Valentine’s Day, I will not be among those sulking or going to a bar to meet someone. Instead, I will be working just like any other day. After work, I will be doing what I typically do, have a few laughs with friends, play hockey at my local ice rink, read, and any number of ordinary daily activities – all with no “poor me” feelings. My advice, along with 25 cents as the saying goes, is to suck it up, walk it off, rub some dirt on it, get over it, and live in the solution. Life goes go on.

Did Superman inspire future greatness? As someone who is tolerant of winter, but not fond of it, the above average warmth and lack of snow so far this season has been quite pleasing. I don’t plan a winter getaway annually, but I do find that a break from the cold and snow to be quite therapeutic, even during winters such as this one. I spent such a week recently along Alabama’s Gulf coast – Gulf Shores, to be exact. My mother is retired and spends two months of her winter in Gulf Shores. She leaves after the holiday season and returns in late March. Since it’s an extended vacation, she drives back and forth each year. She doesn’t like

Gulf Shores isn’t exactly the dream vacation destination of most 41-year-olds, but you won’t hear me complain. I find plenty of ways to keep myself occupied among the numerous retirees that populate the coastline, and given how many people I know or

have met who haven’t had the luxury of taking a vacation in recent years due to lost jobs and ever-inflating costs of living, I know I’m blessed to be able to take my turns behind the wheel as mom heads south each January. I see new things with each trip south, but I’d hardly call my Gulf Shores vacations educational. The 2012 Gulf Shores road trip, however, had me pondering a question I can’t answer definitively, although I think I know the answer. My highway reflections began in Metropolis, Ill., home of the Super Museum. Yep, the town that shares the name with the fic-

titious city in the Superman comic books is home to the largest collection of Superman memorabilia you will ever find. I had heard of the museum, but never considered visiting it until four years ago, when my first Gulf Shores road trip brought me to the southern Illinois city. Although I was never a big Superman fan, I did collect comic books as a youngster, so I was determined to someday visit the museum that pays homage to Clark Kent’s alter ego. Burnsville residents reminded to renew pet licenses in 2012

The beginning of a new year also means that a number of cat and dog licenses in Burnsville are up for renewal. The city of Burnsville requires that all cats, dogs and domesticated ferrets over 4 months old in the city are required to be licensed every two years. This is especially important for animals that are let outside. In order to obtain a license, pet owners must provide proof of a current rabies vaccination for their animal, and the pet must wear a current license tag at all times. Licensing helps prevent against rabies outbreaks, and, more importantly, increases the chance that a lost pet will be found and returned to its owner. The city of Burnsville utilizes American Boarding Kennels, 1102 Highway 13 E., to oversee its animal control issues. License applications are available at their location, the Burnsville Police Department and online at burnsville.org/pets. Discounts on license fees are offered to owners who have their pet spayed or neutered. A two-year license is $20 for a spayed or neutered pet, and $30 for non-spayed or neutered. Info: 952-894-3647.

How many people have that kind of passion about anything? How many people get to act upon it? Not enough of us, I suspect. I enjoyed my museum visit, but didn’t drive away from Metropolis with a newfound enjoyment of Superman’s comic book, television and big screen adventures. I did, however, leave town with a sense of appreciation and awe for one man’s passion and the tourist attraction that exists today because of it. are known in the music industry as the two largest drumming competitions in the world, according to Nigel Linden, a friend of Bouvet. He handles public relations for Bouvet and his son, Michael, who perform together in the band Helicopria while living in Boston and attending Berklee College of Music, also in Boston. “My son and he are actually very close friends,” he said. “They were in a band together in middle school and high school.” For Bouvet, it was a busy month, as the Guitar Center drum-off grand finals took place Saturday, Jan. 14, at Club Nokia in Anaheim, while the Rowland V drum competition took place Friday, Jan. 20, at the House of Blues in Anaheim. The Guitar Center Drum Off begins at all of the local stores across the nation. Around 4,500 drummers competed this year. Winners from two heats at the stores advanced to districts, regionals, and then the grand final at the Nokia Center in Los Angeles. “J.P. actually started at one of the toughest stores in the country because it was all the Berklee music students in the very first round,” Linden said. “The Berklee College of Music is the most famous and prestigious contemporary

music schools in the world actually.” His journey netted more than 45 prizes, culminating in $25,000 in cash, drum kits and equipment, as well as coveted endorsements by manufacturers of his choice – not to mention the international notoriety that comes with such an accomplishment. “This year I started in Boston since I was living there,” Bouvet said of the varying levels of competition to reach the Rowland V event. The district competition was in Natick, Mass., while the regional event was in Brooklyn, N.Y. According to Bouvet, climbing the ladder to the top involved winning each of these levels at music stores in different locations. Bouvet was among around 4,500 in the country competing in separate district competitions. Bouvet said he went through five rounds before advancing to the regional and national competition. “This is a huge deal,” Bouvet said. “This is the biggest drum competition in the world.” The Roland competition followed a similar path, which included wins at different levels before he was able to advance to the Rowland V competition. He was fighting for the world championship, representing the U.S.A. A total of 16 countries were represented, and he came away with the silver medal. Norway won gold, and the Czech Republic won the bronze. “I won the United States competition and was the U.S. representative for the international competition,” Bouvet said.

ed.” As much as she provided initial inspiration, the Lakeville musician credits an instructor for much of his success. “Before I even got a drum set in my house, I was taking lessons at Schmidt Music,” he said of the Burnsville music store where he worked for seven years with instructor Wade Linkert. “He was a great teacher, and I attribute my open mindedness to music to him.” Since his wins, Bouvet has been riding high, with press conferences, interviews, and even testimonials from famous drummers, according to Linden. “However, J.P. is taking it in his stride,” Linden said. “He is in two bands: Helicopria, which is touring Turkey in February, and The Super Pilots, who will be opening for Randy Brecker at this years’ Art and All That Jazz Festival in Burnsville this August.” Bouvet, the aspiring musician, has plans to continue his drumming with a couple of goals in mind. “I want to continue to establish myself as J.P. the drummer,” he said, adding it his desire to be that person others look up to, as well as inspiring up-and-coming drummers. With his prize money, Bouvet said he looks to invest some for the time being, use some to fund drum clinics he will be conducting this year in Boston, and to pay for associated costs with moving to Los Angeles. His future also includes continuing his work with the band Helicopria. “We are going on our second tour to Istanbul, Turkey. We leave Feb. 13. We are opening for a band called Mando Diao, and that’s going to be in a 17,000 capacity venue,” he said, adding Mando Diao is very popular in Europe. Info: helicopria.bandcamp.com.

Gillach, MnDOT public communications and business liaison, the road received a “poor” rating by the transportation department, which prompted the project as part of the Better Roads for Minnesota program. He added that the road is expected to last up to 20 years. Burnsville and Eagan officials, as well as Mendota Heights, are working with MnDOT to mitigate accessibility and road closures. Gillach said the construction will be done in segments to help keep most of the four-lane road open to citizens and commercial trucking. More than 45,000 vehicles use the road daily, according to Gillach, with around 36,000 using it near its I-35W intersection in Burnsville

Benefits will include, according to Gillach, not only a smoother driving surface, but also an extended road service life and reduced costs for maintenance in the short-term. It is a great project for the city,” said Steve Albrecht, Burnsville Public Works director. “Anytime you do a project like that, with all of our intersections, there is going to potential, intermittent closures of access during the project.” Addressing the main concern for the city for its citizens, Albrecht added that though there may have to be some lane

closure, much of the work will be performed overnight to reduce any inconvenience to commuters. But at this point in time, it’s too early to say specifically where the closures will be. “We’re not far enough along with MnDOT to know what the specific ones are going to be,” Albrecht said. However, Albrecht said that the project will not interfere with the plans to build a bridge at the intersection of Highway 13 and County Road 5 in Burnsville, saying this will pick up where the Highway 13 and County Road 5 project will stop “and we’ll pave everything that doesn’t get paved as part of that project.” “This project will be done in advance of that project, so this project will be done this summer,” he said. “Our 5 and 13 project will start later this year, but we won’t start actually doing roadwork until 2013.” Eagan City Engineer Russ Matthys said one of the biggest challenges regard-

Reports of unleashed dogs in Burnsville city parks and trails have officials tightening their enforcement of an ordinance requiring pets to be kept on a leash while in public. Specifically, users of Alimagnet Park – home to the city’s enclosed, seven-acre Alimagnet Dog Park – and residents in the surrounding neighborhood have grown concerned with the large number dogs being let offleash on adjacent city trails and ball fields. The Burnsville Police Department will be taking a more proactive approach to enforcement in this area, and will begin issuing citations to violators in the near future. All dog owners are reminded that it is against the law to allow dogs to be off-leash on any public property, including the parking lots, trails and parkland. While it may seem harmless to some, there have been a number of reported incidents of dogs interfering with others’ enjoyment of park amenities. “Burnsville strives to provide quality parks and facilities that can be enjoyed by all residents and patrons,” said Burnsville Recreation and Facilities Superintendent J.J. Lakeville police Officer Jim Dronen recently responded to a report of a hitand-run crash causing damage to property. What the driver of the fleeing vehicle didn’t know was that the other driver, whose vehicle was struck, followed and obtained a license plate. Officers responded to the residence listed to the license plate and quickly located the suspect vehicle. Dronen responded to the residence and located the driver of the vehicle. The driver said that she had fled the scene because she did not have car insurance. Dronen cited the driver for no

insurance and the additional charges of inattentive driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Making Marines: Graduation The final installment in a series examining training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego BY DANIEL CALLAHAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Even on the temperate California coast, the time between dawn and the sun’s rising still brings with it a perceptible chill to the air. As the sun begins to crest the hills surrounding Camp Pendleton ordinary folks set about their work, one group of Marine Corps recruits are nearing the end of theirs. In near perfect unison, the recruits march across blacktop to take their places for a ceremony they’ve waited for since they began training more than 50 days earlier. This morning makes the formal review and graduation a few days hence seem almost a formality. Today is the day they receive a symbol they’ve been accepted. Accepted into the brotherhood of pride and honor that first drew them to the Marine Corps. MARINES: TO NEXT PAGE

Marines FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Today they receive their eagle, globe and anchor emblem. And the title of United States Marine. Over the last 50 hours, with less than three full meals and running on fewer hours of sleep than the average afternoon nap, these recruits have hiked up mountains strapped to packs weighing 80 pounds or more. They’ve worked, sweated, and carried each other along together as a team through nearly 40 kilometers of hikes and up mountains. The capstone on months of training and exercises, the Crucible is known as the make or break moment, an event that leads into the end of their initial training phase. And, the reward that comes with it. That reward is enormous to a

recruit, who, for most of the last three months, has heard few kind words and even fewer that were not yelled. The drill instructors, who have guided the recruits to this point of success, place the emblem in their hand individually and give them a few quiet words of encouragement and congratulations before addressing the former recruit as Marine. Not a few eyes are damp as Navy Corpsmen, the medical personnel who work with the corps, walk up and down behind the recruits reminding the exhausted young men not to lock their knees and standing by for those moments when they might be needed. Those who walked onto the blacktop as recruits, exit to a hearty breakfast and a solid rest as Marines. A few days later, they’ll once again march across a parade ground, but this time it will be as Marines for their final review

before the commanding officers of the recruit depot as well as their families, friends and relatives, many of whom make the trip to San Diego to watch the final graduation. Those Marines of particular note will be recognized for their work during training There is work yet to be done; after a 10-day leave, they will return to the business of learning what it means to be a Marine through combat training and further education on their designation military occupation specialty. In the story of their transformation, the last chapter comes to a close, while their lives as United States Marines will not conclude. Burnsville native Abby Voigt was named to the first semester dean’s list at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota for 2011-2012. The list includes more than 350 undergraduates who earned grade point averages of 3.60 or better on a 4.0 scale. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point conferred degrees on more than 550 graduates at the university’s 2011 winter commencement ceremonies. Among those receiving degrees was Burnsville native Dana Carothers. The following students have been named to the Minnesota State University Moorhead dean’s list in honor of academic achievement fall semester 2011. Students must maintain a 3.25 or higher grade point average and carry 12 graded credits to qualify for the honor. Those named include Burnsville natives Shane Kelly, Anna Olson, and Alex Richard. The University of MinnesotaCrookston recently announced its list of fall semester 2011 graduates. Students

completed their degree requirements during fall semester 2011. Among those graduating was Burnsville native Eric Plut.

Lakeville During Iowa State University’s fall commencement ceremonies, 1,630 students received degrees. Iowa State awarded 1,260 undergraduate degrees, 262 master’s degrees and 108 doctor of philosophy degrees. Of the students receiving bachelor’s degrees was Lakeville native Erin Follese. It’s probably a couple of miles to the north, at Lakeville North. North was first and South second in the section seedings released Feb. 5. Lakeville South (19-5-1), which won 17 of its final 20 regular-season games after a 2-2-1 start, played seventh-seeded Owatonna in the Section 1AA quarterfinals on Feb. 8, after this edition went to press. If the Cougars win, they will play No. 3 seed Rochester Mayo or sixth-seeded Winona in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Hasse Arena. A Lakeville South-Lakeville North showdown in the section playoffs couldn’t happen until the championship game, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at Four Seasons Arena in Owatonna. The Cougars have gone to the state tournament two of the last three years. South Suburban Conference champion Lakeville North (see story elsewhere in this section) went to state in 2010. Lakeville South shut out four of its last seven regular-season opponents, including Prior Lake 4-0 on Feb. 4. Three Cougars players – K.K. Naasz, Morgan Morse and Ari Reid – had 30 points or more in the regular season, and Reid scored a team-high 21 goals. Apple Valley (12-12-1) drew the third seed in Section 3AA and played defending champion Rosemount (8-13-4) in a Feb. 8 quarterfinal game. The teams played three times during the regular season,

BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s been a tough 12 months for Lakeville North’s girls hockey team, but with difficult trials come great rewards. The Panthers’ 7-1 victory at Burnsville on Feb. 4 clinched their school’s first conference girls hockey championship. After experiencing a wide range of emotions over the last year, they go into the Section 1AA playoffs this week happy and confident. It’s a marked contrast to February 2011 when they were unsettled by a serious injury to their head coach, then devastated by a triple-overtime loss in the section semifinals. “We peaked at the right time,” said North coach Buck Kochevar, whose team won 14 of its final 16 regularseason games. “We started slow this year, had some injuries, but the girls battled through all that. In our last two games, we could see they were working really hard.” North (19-5-1 overall) went into the Burnsville game needing a victory to hold off Eagan and Lakeville South in a race to the wire in the South Suburban Conference. The Panthers finished 14-2-1 in the league, edging Eagan (13-2-2) and Lakeville South (13-3-1). The Panthers also earned the top seed in the Section 1AA tournament and played Rochester John Marshall or Rochester Century in a quarterfinal game Feb. 8.

The one-year on-ice ban expires Feb. 14, and Kochevar vows to be on the ice for practice Feb. 15. To have a practice Feb. 15, the Panthers must win their first two section playoff games. Considering the way they’ve played lately, that seems like a safe bet. “The goal all year has been to go to state,” Solheid said. “After what happened last year, we don’t want to have that feeling again.”

Podominick keeping Olympic hopes alive Former Lakeville High standout trying to make U.S. team in discus BY ANDY ROGERS – SUN NEWSPAPERS One of Lakeville’s favorite daughters is a few meters closer to realizing her Olympic dreams in 2012. Liz Podominick continues to spin the discus as far as possible and she’s been on a crazy trip since graduating from Lakeville High School in 2003. The list of Podominick’s athletic achievements in basketball and the throwing events in track in field is long. She helped Lakeville win state titles and set state track records. She was on the University of Minnesota women’s basketball team that played in the NCAA Final Four and set more school records for throwing. She zeroed in on the discus during her college career after realizing basketball wasn’t a long-term endeavor and her shot-put skills were beginning to plateau. “I have a better body type for discus,” she said. “It requires more quickness and explosiveness, if I use it correctly. It’s a lot more technical.” During a conversation with Kris Kuehl, fellow Minnesota track and field athlete who competed at the 2000 Olympics for discus, she decided to pur-

sue a spot on the Olympic team. “She said if you feel like you can get better, you’re having fun and you’re healthy, why not continue,” Podominick said. “I felt like I hadn’t reached my potential.” Podominick tried out for the 2008 Olympics, but fell short in the trial phase. During the fall of 2008, she started graduate school at Minnesota. Like throwing a discus, life has many ups and downs. A deep downturn came in the winter of 2008 when Podominick’s brother, Johnny, unexpectedly died. Her brother was one of her biggest fans attending every one of her basketball games in high school and college. After his death, she took some time off from the sport and evaluated whether or not she would continue competing. “He was always there to push me,” she said. “He always supported me. I was lucky to have him as a brother. I knew things would be very hard without him, but I thought it was the right way to honor his memory.” In spring 2009, she began her training back where it all started – with her high school throwing coach Rick Ringeisen. There she hoped to gain back her strength and heal a broken heart. She spent time coaching athletes with Lakeville North, nourishing her love of throwing the discus. “It was very rewarding,” she said. “It was fun to be a role model. It was fun to coach the guys. They wouldn’t really listen until they saw me throw.

“Being able to coach made me a better thrower. I would tell them to do things that I wasn’t doing either. It was a great way to give back to the program.” She moved to Colorado, a popular training ground for Olympians, two years ago to take a job with the USA Figure Skating Team and saw firsthand what it was like to train as an Olympian. At the 2011 USA Track and Field Championships in June she finished sixth in the discus and realized how close she was to qualifying for the Olympics. She continued to train, but working with the skating team required more than full-time hours leaving her little time to perfect her throws. She then contemplated resigning her job. “I have my whole life to work,” she said. “I can’t do all the athletic stuff later.” The USA Figure Skating team couldn’t bear the thought of losing her, so it retained her by creating a part-time position for her. Now she trains six days a week for four to six hours a day. She spends three days a week throwing in the morning and lifting weights in the afternoon. On the other days she does athletic drills to improve her explosiveness and overall fitness. “It’s exhausting,” she said. Her goal is to throw 62 meters and place in the top three at the Olympic trials, which is the most direct route to competing at the Olympics. She’s thrown for almost 58 meters before.

“I’m improving a lot by training full time,” Podominick said. “There’s a lot of things that have to fall into place and I hope God puts me in the right place at the right time.” She’s targeting a few track meets in Arizona later this year with hopes of qualifying. After years of throwing the discus, she still hasn’t mastered the art. She’s currently in Portland, Ore., working with a discus technician. “I’m making minor adjustments, but they should bring huge gains,” she said. Because she’s only working part time, her training has been a strain financially. She finds herself traveling for competition and for training often, which isn’t free. There’s also coaching fees and equipment. “Those add up,” she said. Her friends back home offered help in the form of a spaghetti dinner and silent auction held earlier this month at All Saints Catholic Church in Lakeville. “Not every athlete has this,” Podominick said. “So many people are asking what I’m doing and so many people have offered to help. BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Augustana College football coach Mike Aldrich is a Burnsville native, and when it comes to recruiting he apparently doesn’t forget where he came from. Although there were no Burnsville players in his 2012 recruiting class, Aldrich picked up several players from one suburb to the south. That includes the top receivers from Lakeville North and Lakeville South high schools. Lakeville North’s Charlie Hayes, who caught 60 passes for 1,033 yards last season, signed with the Vikings on Feb. 1. So did Lakeville South’s Matt Heller, who had 48 catches for 820 yards. The Augustana recruiting class also included Lakeville North quarterback Trey Heid, Lakeville South defensive back Nevin Andreas, Lakeville South defensive lineman Dillon Lampert and Eagan defensive back Grant Matthews. Fourteen Minnesotans signed to play football at Augustana, including Eden Prairie defensive lineman/linebacker Anthony King-Foreman, whose father is Minnesota Vikings all-time great Chuck Foreman. A story in last week’s Sun-Current

detailed some of the high school studentathletes who had made their college decisions in advance of National Signing Day. Several others announced their choices after that story went to press. Lakeville North senior Emma Erickson will compete in track and field at North Dakota. Eagan’s Aaron Roundtree and Joe Machachek joined five other football teammates to sign National Letters of Intent. ExCEL (Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership) awards go to juniors who participate in MSHSL athletic and/or fine arts activities, hold leadership positions in their schools and work voluntarily in their communities. Each MSHSL member school can nominate one girl and one boy each year.

South Suburban Conference teams were No. 1 seeds in two sections – Eagan in Section 3AA and Lakeville North in 1AA. Last year two SSC teams qualified for the state tournament but both lost in the Class AA quarterfinals. Lakeville South and Rosemount then met in the consolation semifinals, with South winning 3-2. Lakeville South went on to place sixth at state. A current SSC member has not been in a state girls hockey championship game since 2001, when Bloomington Jefferson won the Class AA championship.
