‘Tee it up for the Troops’ event spreading across country BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS What started as a simple request by a Minnesota soldier has evolved into a nationwide call for support of troops and their families. Burnsville-based Tee it up for the Troops, a nonprofit organization created to honor and recognize the needs all veterans, hosted its seventh annual golf tournament Sept. 9, Mendakota Country Club, Mendota Heights. Family members and friends of Tyler Ball, a soldier who enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, created the organization in 2005. At the request of Ball, the group’s mission is to honor, respect, remember and support all those who have served in all branches of the U.S. military. James Ball, group founder and Tyler’s father, said the organization’s goal was to make the Friday closest to Sept. 11 the National Day of Golf. Since the event started in 2005, it has spawned other Tee it up for the Troops events across the country. Prior to the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Tyler was in college. But shortly after the attack, the student felt a need to do something to defend his country. He called his family to inform them he would be enlisting. “When Tyler called home, we asked about things he needed,” James said. “He just said do something for the soldiers and families back home.” The first thing the father and son thought about doing was having a golf outing to raise funds for soldiers and their families stateside. “Tyler and I came up with the idea,” James said. According to James, who was attending a support group at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville, asked group members if they would be interested in supporting the idea. TEE IT UP: TO PAGE 13

PUBLIC SAFETY Lakeville dumb criminal issued citation for hit and run crash Lakeville Police Officers responded to a report of a minor property damage “hit and run” crash on County Road 46. The suspect vehicle had rear-ended another vehicle and then fled the scene of the crash. While still traveling to the call, officers were advised by the dispatch center that a driver in another car witnessed the crash and was following the suspect vehicle. Unfortunately for the suspect driver fleeing the crash, the witness happened to be an off-duty police officer. The officer was able to quickly provide a license plate number of the suspect vehicle. The responding officers ran a computer check on the license plate and responded to the residence of the owner of the suspect vehicle. When they arrived, they located the suspect driver and the vehicle. The driver admitted to officers that he had fled the scene after the crash because he did not have insurance on his car. The driver was issued a citation for the traffic violations and released.

Former Girl Scout leader sentenced for alleged thefts Joleen Marie Hopkins, 55 of Mendota Heights was sentenced Sept. 13 to 90 days in jail, 30 days of electronic home monitoring and five years of probation by Judge Shawn Moynihan in connection with using her former position as a Girl Scout leader to steal approximately $8,200 from the accounts of the troop and its chapter, according to Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom in a press release. Hopkins pled guilty June 28 to two felony counts of theft by swindle. According to the press release, these thefts are alleged to have occurred in 2008 and 2009. All other charges were dismissed. Hopkins was also ordered to pay restitution of nearly $8,500. “It is always disturbing to see crimes of this nature, which adversely impact youth and the Girl Scout community,” Backstrom said in the release. “We are pleased to hold this offender accountable for her actions.”

Third annual Pedal the Parks more than biking BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS One Lakeville organization is showing how a small, grassroots effort can attract others and grow into a much larger communitywide event. Lakeville Friends of the Environment and the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota will be presenting the third annual Pedal the Parks and Sustainability Fair 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, Pioneer Plaza, 20801 Holyoke Ave., Lakeville. Registration and bicycle safety checks will be conducted 9 a.m., while a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the city’s new wayfinding sign system will take place 9:30 a.m. Event organizers are encouraging as many community members as possible to attend this year’s event, which will feature speakers, free food, and education, in addition to guided bike routes of 6, 10, and 20 miles. The free annual event allows residents of Lakeville and other nearby communities an opportunity to not only spend a morning biking and enjoying the scenery along the trail system, but it is also designed to educate all attendees about ways of living a more environmentally friendly life, according to Lakeville Friends of the Environment member

Veda Kanitz. “We want people to work together locally to solve problems. We work with local citizens to protect the [city’s] environment,” Kanitz said. “We are also showcasing the parks and trail system in Lakeville.” Kanitz, who has been with the Lakeville environmental organization since 2004, said the first event was modest in size, with only about 25 people attending. She added that the original idea for the event came from a young member of her organization. “We actually got started with a youth who wanted to do a biking event,” she said. “Our first event was in East Community Park.” The first year garnered a modest 25 bikers and a bike rodeo, which was overseen by the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, known more commonly to those involved as Bike MN. “They handle the whole biking end, and we do the environmental message,” Kanitz said. Bike MN, however, is just one of many organizations joining the cause. Among the others is Valley Natural Foods of Burnsville. According to Charli Mills, VNF mar-

keting communications manager, the coop has been with Lakeville Friends of the Environment since the beginning. “When they organized, several of the founding members were members and shoppers of our co-op,” she said. “It seemed like a natural fit from the beginning. As they started out small, we supported their efforts and then it grew into Pedal in the Parks” In addition to providing some financial assistance for expenses such as renting tents and banner printing costs, as well as donating all of the soda, VNF will be participating in the event as part of the sustainability fair. This year Mills and others with VNF will be encouraging the use of aluminum cans over the use of plastic bottles. “The soda is organic soda in aluminum cans. Aluminum cans can be recycled,” she said. “Though we do recycle plastic, we don’t have a good system yet for recycled plastics, not in the way we do for aluminum cans.” But Mills said even this presents a bit of a challenge due to the type of event it is. “It does challenge us when we think of a no-waste event,” Mills said. “The challenge is how do we do to a no-waste event without bringing packaged product.”

Instead of bringing individually packaged items, such as chips, VNF members will be brining a product that is sold in bulk at the Burnsville co-op. “We are bringing an item called glad corn,” Mills said, describing it as a snack food that is grown in Mountain Lake, Minn. “We will be passing out glad corn to bikers.” According to Mills, the corn is grown naturally with no chemical processing. She added that it may not be certified organic, but “we would say they grow it clean.” Daniel Patterson of Dakota County Active Living, a county program funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota to promote daily physical activity, said the program has supported the event for the past three years with modest donations. Patterson will attend this year’s event to encourage people to be more physically active. “We see it as a way of getting people more comfortable on their bikes so that they make other trips by bike,” Patterson said. “The end goal is to get people more physically active in their everyday life, and that provides longterm health benefits.”

BV making progress in Yellow Ribbon campaign Effort attracts assistance from BHS students BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Following up on a pledge made by the Burnsville City Council in July, many volunteers have stepped up to help the city in its goal of becoming a Yellow Ribbon city. Campaign officials hosted the city’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon kickoff this past July at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center, 12600 Nicollet Ave. And since, the call to action has been heard loudly and clearly. The Beyond the Yellow Ribbon campaign is an effort to create awareness throughout respective communities with a purpose of connecting members of the U.S. armed forces and their families with resources and services, as well as support and training. According to Annette Kyuper, director of military outreach for the Minnesota Army National Guard, the military already provides services for service members to help them re-inte-

grate into civilian life. But unlike these programs, the Yellow Ribbon campaign is communitydriven, relying almost entirely on all of its volunteers to help their city create an action plan to achieve Yellow Ribbon status. The volunteer effort is less about financial assistance and more about providing help, said Deputy City Manager Tom Hansen. “It’s more about people providing inkind volunteer services instead of financial assistance, he said, adding that these services could come in just about any form. The 16-step process requires volunteers to create a steering committee to oversee seven key areas, which include community leadership, public safety, faith-based organizations, veterans and civic organizations, youth and education, social services and medical providers, and business and employment. “Each of the seven groups comes up with their own portion of the action plan, said Sgt. David Denton, Yellow Ribbon outreach coordinator for the Minnesota Army National Guard. “Most of them have already met and

have done the action planning. This is especially true for Burnsville High School teacher David McDevitt, who teaches a public affairs class. Every semester, McDevitt selects a project for his students, and this year he chose the Yellow Ribbon campaign. “We have three ideas that we would like to do. The goal is to do them all, McDevitt said. “This is brand new territory for all of us. The fun part of the class is that this is not curriculum. It’s a developing class assignment. The ideas include an October event during a BHS football game to honor veterans and current service members, an a Veteran’s Day assembly, and a family night. BHS seniors Drew Gallo and Ralyn Shoop are two students in McDevitt’s public affairs class, and both said they are excited about the project. “My grandparents were in the Korean war, so helping veterans is exciting, Drew said. “I now have a cousin in Iraq. It’s kind of refreshing to help people who are going through the same thing as I am. But Drew also has a cousin who is currently serving in Iraq, so he knows from personal experience what these

families are going through. I’m helping other people in the same situation, he said. “It feels really good. Fellow classmate Ralyn Shoop shares the same feelings as Drew as her father and mother were both in the military for 20 years. “I understand what they are going though, Ralyn said. “I feel like it’s an honor to be involved. The people in our military do so much for us. Speaking about the Veterans Day assembly, Drew described what he and his classmates are planning. “We are having people come in and talk to the students about either having family members in the service or being in the service and worrying about their family back home, Drew said. Ralyn added that the purpose will be to help raise awareness about the fact that people are currently fighting for our freedom. “It’s really great to be involved in something like this, she said. “The first two we’re getting started on pretty quick, but the family night is a little further down the road, Drew said, YELLOW RIBBON: TO PAGE 7

The many languages of justice When a young man appeared in court recently to respond to a minor traffic violation, I sensed an elevated level of anxiety. He answered “yes” when I asked him if he understood the rights I had explained at the beginning of the hearing, and he answered “yes” when I asked him if he understood the charges he faced. It was when I asked him whether he wanted to plead guilty or not guilty to the charges, and he answered “yes” again, that I realized the reason for the heightened anxiety – he did not understand me. This experience introduces a subject of increasing importance and concern for the courts throughout Minnesota and the nation: how can we provide meaningful access to justice to the growing population that does not understand English or for whom English is a second language? A survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau found that from 2006 to 2008 more than 120 languages were spoken in Minnesota and that almost 10 percent of the population in Minnesota did not speak English in their homes. When non-English-speaking people are involved in court proceedings, they have a right to understand what’s going on. Even people who can get by in social settings with their English skills may need assistance when they are involved in more formal court proceedings. (After two years of Spanish classes at a local community college, I may be comfortable ordering a

EDWARD LYNCH Guest Columnist

cerveza at a cantina in Cancun, but would not want to rely on my Spanish in a Mexico City courtroom with my freedom at stake.) In 2010, more than 25,800 hearings in Minnesota courts required interpreters speaking more than 88 languages. During this same period, more than 4,500 hearings in the seven counties of the First Judicial District required interpreters speaking 48 languages to assist participants; an average of 18 hearings each day require an interpreter. Who provides these services? In years past, the availability of interpreters was uncertain, and the skills of interpreters were mostly unknown. Friends and family members or contacts from cultural, religious or ethnic organizations would frequently serve as interpreters. Hearings often had to be continued until an interpreter could be located, increasing the delay, expense and inconvenience to everyone involved, not just the nonEnglish-speaking participant. The major concern has not been expense or inconvenience, however, but whether the participants understand the proceedings. If the participant is a witness or a victim, understanding is important. If the participant is a defendant in a criminal matter, understanding is critical.

The Minnesota legislature recognized this when it passed a law that declares it is “the policy of this state that the constitutional rights of persons disabled in communication cannot be fully protected unless qualified interpreters are available to assist them in legal proceedings.” Disputes involving some of the most important matters in peoples’ lives are brought into court for resolution. When a person’s freedom, family, property or safety is at risk, he or she has a right to understand completely and participate fully to obtain a just result. To ensure that non-Englishspeaking people are provided timely, meaningful access to justice and a fair opportunity to understand and participate in court hearings in Minnesota, the Minnesota Supreme Court created the Court Interpreter Training and Certification Program, developed a Code of Professional Responsibility for Interpreters and established rules that explain the role of interpreters in court. As a result of this effort, more than 1,300 interpreters speaking more than 100 languages are now available to provide services to court participants. More than 750 of these interpreters have passed rigorous examinations and have been certified as interpreters in the 13 most common languages spoken in Minnesota. The courts in Minnesota have come a long way in responding to the needs and rights of nonEnglish-speaking people in court proceedings.

The cost of providing interpreters for court hearings in Minnesota in 2010 was $1.9 million. The cost of providing these services in the First Judicial District in 2010 was more than $330,000. In an effort to control these costs, counties throughout the state and in the First Judicial District have been developing best practices, sharing resources and entering into contractual relationships with interpreters to provide reliable services at reasonable costs. In Carver County, for example, interpreters for certain languages are provided via interactive TV from Hennepin County. This reduces travel for the interpreter, allows the interpreter to provide services in several counties from the same location and results in significant cost savings. There will always be a certain level of anxiety associated with any court appearance, but the anxiety should not result from a lack of understanding. The judicial branch is taking proactive measures to ensure that qualified interpreters are available to protect the rights of the increasing number of non-Englishspeaking people involved in court proceedings in Minnesota. Justice should be available and understandable to all people. Fortunately, in Minnesota, it is. Edward Lynch is chief judge of the First Judicial District, which includes the counties of Carver, Dakota, Goodhue, Le Sueur, McLeod, Scott, and Sibley.

Yellow ribbon FROM PAGE 5 adding the night could be an evening at the movies or ice-skating. Speaking for Independent School District 191, Superintendent Randy Clegg said, “As one of the larger employers in the area, we’ve had several of our employees who have been deployed. We also as a school system worked with many families who have

been deployed. We certainly see the impact across the system.” Clegg added that even though some of the schools’ actions have taken place outside the context of the campaign, “everyone of our schools has done a fantastic job supporting these families.” According to Kyuper, each of the seven sub-committee action plans will be combined to form the official and final action plan, which is then submitted to the state for approval. “It’s about a nine to 12-month process because we ask them to touch every part of the community.”

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-

tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. In addition to exposing these truths about thyroid treatment, Dr. Gilman will also discuss natural solutions to help thyroid problems. Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating for Dr. Gilman’s private thyroid seminar is limited. It will be held on Tuesday, September 27th at 6:30 PM at 1964 Rahncliff Ct., Suite 600, Eagan. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!

Dakota County is required to set the proposed property tax levy by Sept. 15 each year. The board is scheduled to adopt the final budget by Dec. 13, which is now limited to the zero-percent levy. The Dakota County administrator will present a recommended budget to the county board Nov. 1. The adoption of the final 2012 budget and property tax levy is scheduled for Dec. 13.

Under the Market Value Homestead Credit, taxpayers received a credit against the market value of their property, and Dakota County was reimbursed the amount the homeowner saved by the state. Lakeville Fire Department responds to structure fire The Lakeville Fire Department was dispatched to a possible house fire around 9:45 p.m. Sept. 15 at 17362 Goodhue Ave. Crews arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke and fire coming form the backside of the home. The initial response came from all three stations, including three engines, one ladder, one rescue truck, and Allina ambulance. A second alarm was requested for Lakeville Station No. 1 for assistance. Crews made entry into home to extinguish the fire that was on the deck and in the attic space of the kitchen and master

bedroom areas. One family member was home at the time but had exited the home when the fire was discovered and called 911. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire. The fire was extinguished but the home suffered heavy damage to the kitchen and master bedroom. Crews remained on scene until 12:30 a.m. and the fire marshal on scene until 4:30 a.m. determining the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation. There were no injuries during the incident.

Wellness FROM PAGE 1 challenge by Goodrich President Brian Gora. “[He] contacted me about his vision for a wellness day,” Mirelez said. “He has a lot of passion and a lot of vision around wellness, and he challenged everyone.” According to Mirelez, the company formed a team to meet this newly issued challenge and to make it a reality. “Internally, the team tapped employees who have a passion for ‘their workout thing’ who volunteered to coordinate running, biking, soccer, or whatever ‘their workout thing’ was,” Mirelez said. “Externally, the team tapped the Burnsville YMCA, the Running Room, Valley Natural Foods, Valley Bike and Ski and other local resources.” The result was one day in which a thousand and a half employees took to the outdoors to compete in soccer, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, yoga, educational seminars, and a host of other related activities. After Market Customer Support Manager Sarah Reichart was one of the many hundreds of employees who took advantage of the day, which was optional. “It was a paid day off from our regular activities,” Reichart said. “It was nice to participate in activities with people you see in the hall but never talk to.” The employee of seven-and-a-half years participated in a morning stretching session, followed by a 5-kilometer walk, an 8-mile bike ride, and a game of kickball. “I work out four days a week, and I was sore,” Reichart said. “I had a very good time.” According to Mirelez, to get such a large number of company employees to participate was not too difficult, especially when they were getting paid, but he added that there were some other incentives at play. All those who chose to participate could use any activity as completion of a wellness goal and receive a $100 gift card. Also, all who participated were entered into a drawing that gave away five Nintendo Wii Fit packages. Human Resources Generalist Joline Hirdler was instrumental in coordinating the event, according to Mirelez. “A lot of people worked on this Wellness Day, but she was the focal point,” he said. Also featured during the company’s first ever event of this kind, Hirdler spoke of the businesses who supported the event by sending their own employees to Wellness Day. “The running room was set there

Beth Remarcke, left, learns more about running shoes at the running room display table. Remarcke was one of approximately 1,500 employees who participated in Burnsville-based Goodrich Sensors and Integrated Systems’ Wellness Day Sept. 9. (Submitted photo) with running shoes, accessories, information about running programs, and clubs that they support,” Hirdler cited as one example. Hirdler continued by saying that all who she has communicated with, either the day of the event or since it was held, has had only positive things to say. “I keep getting asked if we are going to do this every year,” she said. “The idea is to have this annually or as an ongoing event,” Mirelez said, adding that he and Hirdler feel it was safe to say that the day would be held next year. Like any event that requires much planning, Mirelez cited the areas that were addressed in advance of the event. “We fully recognize that first step from doing nothing to doing something is a very big one. That was why we were offering a very wide variety of activity options,” Mirelez said. “The educational seminars were especially important

for people just starting out.” But the seminars were not where their concerns ended. Organizers encouraged the participants to check with their physicians to ensure that they were cleared for the activities they took part in and to stay within any restrictions. Though he said they were not expecting any kind of emergency situation, Mirelez said that in the event a situation occurred, the company is equipped with a team of first responders to handle emergencies 24/7. When asked about the emphasis on wellness and health, Mirelez said a healthy workforce equated to reduced costs. “Goodrich is self-insured for our health benefits. A healthier workforce will reduce our insurance claims and consequently lower the insurance premiums that our employees pay,” Mirelez explained. “Ultimately, this will result

in savings for them. A healthier workforce is also a more productive workforce.” According to Mirelez, Goodrich CEO Marshall Larsen said it best at the company’s leadership conference early this year when he issued the challenge. “We need all of you, and we need everyone to be healthy,” Larsen said. The day seemed to quickly change the way in which some think about everyday activities, according to Reichart. She cited action she an another employee took soon after the event. “I had to go to a meeting that was in our north building,” she said. “The person I was going with said, ‘We should probably walk.’” The event was held mostly on the grounds of Goodrich at its Burnsville location, with that location’s approximately 1,200 employees. An additional 300 from the businesses Eagan site also participated.

director of Tee it up for the Troops California. According to Rutledge, he and other group members had already been searching for a cause to support. “I had personally been donating to various support groups,” Rutledge said. But after an Internet search, Rutledge learned of the effort that was taking place in Minnesota. “We chose them as our charity,” he said. “We conducted our first tournament in 2007.” Rutledge further commented on the reasons why his group chose to support the Tee it up for the Troops cause, which were mainly based on supporting deployed troops and their families at home, as well as what he described was a virtual lack of overhead expenses. “That was the biggest factor,” Rutledge said, adding nearly 100 percent of all funds raised was going to those for whom it was intended. According to Nancy Christopherson, executive director of the Burnsville-based Tee it up for the Troops, raised funds are distributed to more than 60 organizations in Minnesota and nationwide. She added that along with past and present military members, participants include celebrities from the fields of sports and entertainment, professional golfers, and members of the public and the business community who support the troops.

James said the response to his request was very well received, saying the members were in it 100 percent. “And they have been there every year since,” James said. “We raised about $80,000 the first year.” But since then, that amount has increased dramatically, according to James. “Minnesota alone this year will do over $250,000,” James said. “We’ve raised over $4 million.” Part of the increase in funds raised came through support of other groups nationwide that began hosting their own Tee it up for the Troops events. “I have had friends in the golf industry for years, so I reached out to them,” James said. “My background was I used to be in the club business so I knew people from that industry.” James presented the idea to the Club Managers Association of America January 2007 in Anaheim, Calif. According to James, many club managers were eager to get involved, which led to the creation of similar events across the country. As you get older - the benefits of eating well By the National Institute on Aging ating well is vital for everyone at all ages, but can be especially important as your body ages. Your daily food choices can make an important difference in your health and in how you look and feel. Eating a well-planned, balanced mix of foods every day has many health benefits. For instance, eating well may reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, bone loss, some kinds of cancer, and anemia. If you already have one or more of these chronic diseases, eating well and being physically active may help you better manage them. Healthy eating may also help you reduce high blood pressure, lower high cholesterol, and manage diabetes. Eating well gives you the nutrients

E

needed to keep your muscles, bones, organs, and other parts of your body healthy throughout your life. These nutrients include vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fats, and water. Eating well helps keep up your energy level, too. By consuming enough calories — a way to measure the energy you get from food — you give your body the fuel it needs throughout the day. The number of calories needed depends on how old you are, whether you’re a man or woman, and how active you are. If you become less physically active as you age, you will probably need fewer calories to stay at the same weight. Choosing mostly nutrient-dense foods — foods which are high in nutrients but low in calories — can give you the nutrients you need while keeping down calorie intake.

To eat healthier, you can begin by taking small steps, making one change at a time. For instance, you might buy whole-grain bread, leaner meats, or more fruits and vegetables when you shop. These changes may be easier than you think. They’re possible even if you need help with shopping or cooking, or if you have a limited budget. If you have a specific medical condition, be sure to check with your doctor or dietitian about foods you should include or avoid.

Mix of foods Eating well means choosing a mix of healthy foods that give your body the nutrients it needs. Eating well also means consuming the right number of calories for your age, gender, and level of physical activity. You also need to

know what foods to limit. And of course, it’s important to enjoy your meals. To eat well, it’s best to choose a mix of nutrient-dense foods every day. Nutrient-dense foods are foods that are high in nutrients but low in calories. Look for foods that contain vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fats. Eat a variety of fresh, frozen, canned, or dried FRUITS every day. To make sure you get the benefit of the natural fiber in fruits, you should eat most of your fruits whole rather than as juices. Fruits may be purchased fresh, canned, frozen, or dried and may be eaten whole, cut-up, or pureed. Healthy Eating continues next page

They also provide protein, potassium, vitamin A, and magnesium. Low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese, and yogurt are good options. Also, be sure to consume plenty of liq-

uids, especially WATER. You need to replace the fluids you lose every day. You can increase your intake of water by eating fruits and vegetables, which have a high moisture content. This may help prevent constipation and dehydration. Other good choices are unsweetened tea, low-fat or fat-free milk, and 100 percent fruit juice.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Author, songwriter to speak about Civilian Conservation Corps Author, songwriter, and filmmaker Bill Jamerson will talk and sing about the Civilian Conservation Corps 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Burnhaven Library, 1101 W. County Road 42, Burnsville. Over three million 17-25 year old young men joined the Civilian Conservation Corps during The Great Depression. These “at-risk” youth included high school dropouts, gang members and the homeless. Living in work camps in remote regions of the country the enrollees planted billions of trees, fought forest fires, constructed hundreds of state parks, constructed thousands of miles of roads, and worked on countless resource conservation projects across America. In the process the young men learned how to work, grew more disciplined, acquired job skills and found self-confidence. This all-ages program is part of Dakota County Library’s annual Minnesota Mosaic cultural arts series, which is sponsored by the Dakota County Library Foundation. This proj-

ect was also funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Info: 952-891-0300.

Minnesota state sacred harp convention set for Sept. 24-25 The Minnesota state sacred harp convention will take place 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 24-25, 2187 Highway 101 E., Shakopee, with a potluck dinner to be served at noon. Sacred harp, or shape-note singing, is a traditional American form of singing hymns, anthems and gospel songs in four parts. Singers sit facing the middle of a square. The music has a distinctive open and modal sound, and the singing is usually exuberant, rhythmic and full of feeling. Everyone is welcome to attend to sing or listen. An admission fee will not be charged for those attending for the purpose of singing. It is requested that those attending park by the far west gate, not the main gate. Found medallion: beginner’s luck?

An afternoon with Mark Twain Sept. 29

Burnsville resident Kris Hopko had never searched for the Burnsville Fire Muster medallion before, but in her first attempt, she found the coveted medallion in Burnsville’s Bicentennial Park. According to Hopko, she had read the clue in the online edition of the SunCurrent. “I thought that it looked like fun, she said. “I just went for a walk and looked around. I was very surprised. Hopko said she was surprised to find the medallion in such a relatively short period of time. Recalling the clue that led her to areas that had “flowers and were “grassy, Hopko figured it was in one of two gardens, one near the farther north on Nicollet Avenue and Bicentennial Park, farther south near Burnsville City Hall. “I saw the hosta garden and started wandering back there, she said, adding that she used a stick to gently lift flowers and search for the medallion. Hopko said she located the medallion inside of a plastic bag that was affixed to the inside of a wooden perimeter around one of the gardens.

BOOYA event a hit for Apple Valley Fire Department BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Though the skies were grey and the temperature barely crept over 50 degrees, hundreds of Apple Valley residents congregated Sept. 17 at the city’s Fire Station No. 1 for its 33rd annual Fire Relief Association’s BOOYA event. Apple Valley Fire Chief Nealon Thompson estimated 800-1,000 visitors would attend the event based on previous years attendance totals. The constant line for the BOOYA might have proved his prediction correct. “This is the biggest event the department puts on during the year,” Thompson said. In total, 450 gallons of BOOYA – a tomato-based meat and vegetable stew – were cooked for the event. The stew began cooking at 11 p.m. the Friday night before and stewed for 12 hours until the event kicked off.

The stew was cooked in seven 60and 70-gallon pots at the fire station and it didn’t take long before the first pot was emptied Saturday morning. “We got rid of 60 gallons in a half hour,” said John Eibner, a retired Apple Valley firefighter. The stew is cooked using a secret recipe and Eibner wasn’t about to spill the beans on the decades-old formula. “Only the cooks know,” said Eibner, who was with the fire department for 20 years. Thompson said the weather conditions were nearly ideal for this year’s event. “It’s perfect weather because it’s a hot soup,” Thompson said. “It’s a good day for on-site sales. A lot of people take it home and freeze it and some people use it for hunting season.” Two years ago, Thompson said, temperatures reached into the upper 80s and the sun shone all day. It’s hard to

complain with weather like that, but the heat and sun kept sales of the hot stew down that year, he said. Apple Valley resident Brad Smith and attended the event with his family for the first time this year. He said his daughter went right to the kid’s activities behind the fire station. “We’ve got our 2-year-old in the jumpy thing,” Smith said. “That’s step No. 1, I guess.” Afterwards, Smith said he planned on getting in line to try the stew. “Absolutely,” Smith said. “You gotta try the BOOYA. I’ve never had it before.” Another newcomer to the event, Apple Valley resident Carl Coleman, bought a large pail of BOOYA, though he wasn’t sure how long it would last. “It’s delicious,” said Coleman, who attended with his daughter, girlfriend and her son. “We’ve got a gallon and

North girls soccer team soaring at 10-0 Panthers take over 1st in South Suburban BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Being 10-0 is nice, but like all teams with higher ambitions, Lakeville North is trying to keep its fast start in perspective. The Panthers girls soccer team led the South Suburban Conference going into this week’s play and climbed quickly in the state Class AA rankings (they were fifth last week). The question is, do they have what’s required for a long playoff run? “Being 10-0 wasn’t our goal,” North coach Josh Linde said after the Panthers shut out Rochester Century 4-0 on Sept. 17. “Our goal is to win them all once the section playoffs start.” Some of the Panthers’ toughest games are still to come – Eastview, Eagan, Burnsville and Bloomington Jefferson remain on the schedule – but they have demonstrated that they’re a team to be taken seriously. The defense has been airtight; the Panthers have allowed only three goals all season and sophomore goalkeeper Alexis Joyce has seven shutouts. Offensively, North has gotten to the opponent sooner or later. In their non-conference game last Saturday, the Panthers led 1-0 at halftime before putting Century away with second-half goals by Taylor Brownrigg, Simone Kolander and Grace Mundt. “My biggest expectation for our girls is that they all play their roles, and they’ve all been doing it,” Linde said. “We’re a deep team, and when we sub, there hasn’t been a loss of effort or quality.” Linde is the Panthers’ third head coach in three years. He worked with several of the current varsity players several years ago in the Dakota Rev Soccer Club, where he is a coach and director. He took over a program with 14 returning varsity players from a team that was 7SOCCER: TO NEXT PAGE

Defense dominates, Cougars cruise Lakeville South runs record to 3-0 after routing Apple Valley BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS The opponent didn’t get a first down until the third quarter, didn’t cross midfield until the fourth and didn’t score until the final minute. Is there anything else Lakeville South needs from its defense? Apple Valley “still got six on the scoreboard, so that needs to improve,” said Lakeville South defensive back Matt Melhorn after the Cougars’ 45-6 victory in South Suburban Conference football Sept. 16. “I think we could force some more turnovers, get a hand on the ball a few more times. But this was a good night for us.” It didn’t take long for the Cougars (3-0),

who are ranked fourth in Class 5A, to put the game out of reach. They scored on their first possession and added three more touchdowns and a field goal before halftime. “We talked all week about getting better,” Lakeville South coach Larry Thompson said. “We thought we were the better team, but we didn’t want to be careless.” Twelve different Lakeville South players carried the ball as the Cougars ground out 203 rushing yards. Quarterback Mitchell Leidner threw three touchdown passes. The Cougars also got a touchdown from the defense when Melhorn returned an interception 32 yards for a score in the second quarter. South’s Andrew O’Reilly had just kicked a 27-yard field goal, and with Melhorn’s interception the Cougars’ lead went from 14 to 24 points in 18 seconds. “We were running a Cover-2, and their quarterback [Matt Thomas] threw a little

bit behind his guy,” Melhorn said. “And then my teammates threw some good blocks for me. It was a good experience.” Devon Bzoskie caught five passes for 49 yards and one touchdown. Matt Heller had three catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns, including a 45-yard score in the second quarter. Leidner and Drew Wacker rushed for touchdowns. Austin Britnell led South’s running backs with 58 yards on eight carries. Apple Valley is 0-3 and has allowed at least 45 points in every game. Interceptions by Travis Helling and Kevin Davis kept the Lakeville South offense from doing even more damage. Apple Valley frequently blitzed Leidner, who completed 10 of 21 passes for 132 yards. South is missing the top deep threat among its receivers – senior Trent Bertamus, who has yet to play this season because of a hamstring injury. FOOTBALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Groves is AVHS athletic department’s know-it-all BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Jeff Groves isn’t a full-time employee of Apple Valley High School and the closest thing he has to an official title is assistant volleyball coach. Ask people at the school about him, and the same word typically comes up: Irreplaceable. Groves, a 1987 AVHS graduate, is the athletic department’s jack of all trades. If he’s not with the volleyball team, he might be working the public address system at another Eagles event. He has worked with AVHS student-athletes on leadership councils. He’s the school’s in-house athletic historian. Groves also has a key role in running Apple Valley’s three volleyball tournaments – including the flagship event, the Eagle Invitational, which begins Friday, Sept. 23. AVHS athletics director Pete Buesgens is only half-joking when he says his major contribution to the Eagle Invitational’s success is “staying out of Jeff ’s way.” This will be the 34th year of the Eagle Invitational. Retired AVHS volleyball coach Walt Weaver, who helped establish the tournament in 1978, said Groves is one of the main reasons the event has

Football FROM PREVIOUS PAGE If and when Bertamus is able to play, his presence will make it more risky for opponents to send blitzers after Leidner, Thompson said. The Eagles had 111 yards of offense, but most of it came on their final drive against Lakeville South’s defensive reserves. They broke up the shutout on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Singer to Mitch Hechsel with 58 seconds remaining. Apple Valley will try for its first victory when it plays host to Eagan at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. Lakeville South will be heavily favored when it plays at Bloomington Jefferson on Friday. The Cougars play defending South Suburban Conference champion

endured. “The center of the whole thing is the coaching staff, with Gordy [Hagert, current AVHS head coach] and Dan [Seppala, assistant coach],” Weaver said. “And, Jeff is key. He would be hard to replace. He was handling a lot of the tournament details even before I left.” Groves not only handles the logistics of

a 16-team, two-day tournament, he also wields a lot of influence over who gets invited each year. He studies recent performances, which teams graduated top players, which teams have good young players on the way up, to compile a list of teams to invite to the tournament. Groves said he has already started working on the 2012 Eagle Invitational. “It’s a big help that almost every South Suburban Conference team has at least one Division I player,” he said. This year’s tournament includes five SSC teams – Apple Valley, Lakeville North, Eagan, Eastview and Bloomington Jefferson. When the Eagle Invitational started in 1987, it was one of a few regular-season volleyball tournaments in the state. In recent years the number of tournaments has grown rapidly as schools started their own as fundraisers. The Apple Valley tournament maintained its cachet with coaches because it continued to deliver strong fields. In 32 of the past 33 years, the state large-school champion played in the Eagle Invitational earlier that season. How tough is the tournament? The host school has won more state championships (two) than Eagle Invitational titles (one).

“We have a stronger field than the state tournament,” Groves said. “Milan [Mader, former Lakeville North coach] had a quote many years ago: ‘I don’t care if we go 0-4. I want good competition.’” Groves’ family moved from Burnsville to Apple Valley when he was in fifth grade. Initially, he said he didn’t want to move. By the time he got to the high school, Apple Valley had become an athletic power. “We were 35-3 in football my last three years,” Groves said. “No, I wasn’t on the team. I played on the tennis team. I was a terrible athlete, but I always liked stats.” There was no high school volleyball for boys, but while Groves was an AVHS student and after graduation, he learned what he could from Weaver and other coaches. He said it also was a big help for him to hang around the Minnesota Monarchs, a professional team that Weaver coached for a year. Groves also is the go-to person for AVHS sports historical data. Buesgens said that when he was preparing a news release congratulating boys soccer coach Chuck Scanlon on his 500th career victory, Groves was his first call for background information.

But there still was room for younger players to contribute. In addition to Joyce in goal, other sophomores getting regular playing time are defenders Lauren Brownrigg (Taylor’s sister) and Lauren Sherry. Lauren Brownrigg was on varsity last season, while Sherry played on the junior varsity. In the last couple weeks of the regular season, Linde said he is looking to see his team increase its possession

time. On artificial turf – the surface of Lakeville North’s home field – controlling the ball can be tricky unless the players know what they’re doing. “If you’re looking for each other, [maintaining possession] can be really easy,” Linde said. “If you’re not making good passes, or you’re doing it a beat or two too slowly, it can be almost impossible.”

Lakeville North became the sole leader in the South Suburban when it defeated Lakeville South 2-0 on Sept. 15 while Eastview lost to Eagan 1-0. Eastview, ranked sixth in Class AA, comes to Lakeville North at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22. The Panthers play at home against Rochester Mayo at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, then to on the road to seventh-ranked Eagan at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Rosemount the following week. “We’re doing pretty well,” Melhorn said. “Our first half against Eastview [a 28-14 victory Sept. 9] was really good. But we haven’t always been sharp. Hopefully we can keep getting better because we have a tough schedule toward the end of the season.”

locker room with a 10-7 halftime lead. Burnsville’s defense scored in the third quarter when it tackled Kennedy running back Lexis Jones in the end zone. Blaze senior running back Jalen Dyson gained 88 yards on just six carries. Motl passed for 74 yards. Next up for Burnsville (1-2) is a home game against Prior Lake (1-2) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.

Blaze senior Dan Motl scored a touchdown, kicked a field goal and a conversion, and ran for a two-point conversion as Burnsville won its first game under new head coach Tyler Krebs. Burnsville led 12-7 in the fourth quarter of the Sept. 16 game when Motl’s 52-yard touchdown run sealed the victory. He then ran for a two-point conversion. Motl kicked a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter. Justin Kuznar’s 2-yard run in the second quarter sent the Blaze to the

Lakeville North was held to a seasonlow point total in its Sept. 16 non-conference game against Edina. Not a big deal to the Panthers, who remained undefeated. North quarterback Trey Heid completed 13 passes against Edina. Nine of them went to Charlie Hayes, who had 136 yards receiving and a 30-yard touchdown catch. Joel Oxton caught a 31-yard pass from

Heid for the Panthers’ first score. Edina tied the game later in the first quarter before North regained the lead on Heid’s 2yard run and his 30-yard pass to Hayes. With Edina trailing 21-14 in the final seconds and having time for one more play, a Hornets receiver attempted a lateral after catching a pass. But Lakeville North linebacker Alex Wood picked it off and returned it 48 yards for the game’s final touchdown. Wood led the North defense with 12 tackles (four solo, eight assists). Defensive back Zach Creighton had eight solo tackles. Mitch Johnson and Michael Koloski intercepted Edina passes. Lakeville North travels to Rosemount for a 7 p.m. game Friday, Sept. 23. The defending South Suburban Conference champion Irish are 3-0 after beating Prior Lake 13-6 last week. Rosemount is 3-0 in the SSC, while Lakeville North is 2-0.

Lakeville South girls win Apple Jack meet Groves Second-ranked Cougars win third race of season BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Ninth-graders Kaytlyn Larson and Annie Brekken finished among the top five individuals to lead Lakeville South to the girls team championship at the Apple Jack Invitational cross country meet. Lakeville South won its third meet of the year to go with victories at the Dakota Classic and Bauman/Rovn Invitational. At the Sept. 16 Apple Jack meet at Aronson Park, Lakeville South finished 27 points ahead of second-place Eagan. South was second and Eagan fifth in last week’s state Class AA rankings. Two-time Class AA individual champion Maria Hauger of Shakopee ran away from the field in the 4K race. Her time of 13 minutes, 35.1 seconds was more than 45 seconds faster than the runner-up, Danielle Anderson of Eagan. Larson was third in 14:24.0 and Brekken came in fifth in 14:47.7. The

Cougars had two more runners in the top 20 – senior Megan Kilbride, who was 12th in 15:02.3, and sophomore Erin Kilbride, 20th in 15:24.6. Sophomores Megan Lubow (15:27.4) and Jenny Machaj (15:27.7) were 22nd and 23rd. Ninth-grader Caraline Slattery finished 53rd in 15:59.6. Lakeville North was ninth of 17 teams in the girls meet, scoring 237 points. Senior Emma Johnson led the Panthers, finishing 13th in 15:07.4. Rosemount won the Apple Jack boys team championship with 43 points, 12 fewer than Andover. Lakeville South (140 points) placed fourth and Lakeville North (174) was fifth. Jake Schneeman (17th, 16:38.5) and Mark Honetschlager (20th, 16:43.4), both seniors, led Lakeville South in the 5K boys race. Cash Rodamaker (28th), Wade Durham (33rd), Noah Hanson (42nd), Joey Machaj (62nd) and Ian MacDonald (76th) also ran for South. Seniors Jason Dawson (21st, 16:45.0) and Spencer Castillo (27th, 16:59.9) led Lakeville North. Jason Windhorn and Corey Peterson finished 37th and 38th. Jack Brenner (51st), Perry Smith (61st) and Lewis Kunik (75th) also ran for the Panthers.

Running notes • Burnsville senior Cole O’Brien finished first at the St. Olaf Showcase on Sept. 16 in 15:59. The race is run on the same course where O’Brien finished second in the 2010 state Class AA meet. It was O’Brien’s second victory in three races; the other was in the seasonopening Minneapolis South Invitational. Burnsville was sixth in the boys team competition, won by White Bear Lake. • Another Burnsville runner, sophomore Vivian Hett, also won last week. Hett took first in the girls race at the Rochester Mayo Invitational in 14:44.22. Burnsville was third in the girls team standings with 126 points, only five behind first-place Red Wing. • The high school cross country schedule for Saturday, Sept. 24, includes three major invitational meets. One of them is the Eagle Invitational at Apple Valley High School. Racing begins at 10 a.m. Eden Prairie will defend its boys and girls team championships. Last year Eastview was boys runner-up and Lakeville South was second in the girls meet.

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE One of Groves’ ongoing projects is collecting data for an Apple Valley High School sports history. It might eventually become a book. “We’ve talked about doing that,” he said. “The longer the project goes on, the more I feel I need to get it done. Some of our coaches are retiring.” Groves said he can’t imagine being anyplace else. “The school has such great tradition, and it’s only been open 36 years,” he said.

Eagle Invitational preview The top five teams – and seven of the top 10 – in last week’s state Class 3A rankings will be at the Eagle Invitational this weekend. Also in the field is Faribault Bethlehem Academy, ranked first in Class 1A. Last year’s Eagle Invitational finalists, Wayzata and Lakeville North, are back. Wayzata beat Lakeville North in the championship match in Apple Valley, but seven weeks later, North swept Wayzata in the state Class 3A final. Matches start at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. The tournament continues Saturday, Sept. 24, with the championship match scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
