Patients help Eagan health clinic move to Burnsville BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS

At left, during a recent move from Eagan in October, Gretchen Moen, owner of Eagan Child and Family Clinic in Burnsville, received some help from clients and others. They included Jaxon Tidd (back, hidden), Moen (yellow shirt), Robin Tidd (front), Jared Tidd (back), and Amber Tidd (right). (Submitted photos) Below, Robin Tidd (back) and Bennett Haraldson helped paint the walls of Eagan Child and Family Clinic during its move from Eagan to Burnsville in October.

Owner considering nonprofit status to expand services Despite some financial difficulties and a very recent move, one new Burnsville nurse practitioner clinic perseveres in the face of its adversity, largely due to its community – otherwise known as its clients. Pediatric nurse practitioner and business owner Gretchen Moen has moved her clinic from Eagan to Burnsville. Formerly known as Eagan Child and Family Care, the clinic now operates under the name Eagan Child and Family Clinic, 2530 Horizon Drive, Burnsville. The move was largely a reaction to a need for additional space to fully accommodate its patients, but these days Moen is considering a switch to nonprofit status for the benefit of the clinic’s faithful clientele as well. According to Moen, some constraints exist in connection with being a nurse practitioner, especially owning such a facility in the state of Minnesota. “There are nurse practitioner clinics in other parts of the country. They are very common,” Moen said. “They are just not very common in Minnesota.” Moen speculated on a couple of reasons she feels contribute to the unpopularity of

The combination has led to what may have a dramatic impact on how consumers shop for food. Fuat and Laurie Kerkinni, 17-year residents of Lakeville, have combined their efforts for the past five years on their idea for an iPhone application, which will soon be available for Android users as well. Using the knowledge in their respective fields, the couple has created an application for health-conscious shoppers, as well as individuals with medical conditions and allergies. Sophomore Jennifer Werness of Burnsville was crowned St. Lucia Thursday, Dec. 8, Christ Chapel, Gustavus Adolphus College, during the institution’s 71st annual Festival of St. Lucia. Every year, five sophomore women are chosen to serve on the College’s St. Lucia Court based on courageous leadership, strength of character, service to others, and compassion. This year’s court included Werness, Susan Crane of Des Moines, Iowa; Annalise Dobbelstein of Bemidji; Elizabeth Johnson of Plymouth, and Ellen Krueger of Minnetonka. The Festival of St. Lucia begins the Christmas season in Swedish custom and is traditionally held Dec. 13. On this day in Sweden, the eldest daughter plays the role of St. Lucia by preparing and serving baked goods and coffee to her family at sunrise. Wearing a crown of lighted candles, Lucia represents the return of light that will end the long winter nights and serves as a symbol of hope and peace for the Christmas season. At Gustavus, the St. Lucia Court traditionally sings carols through the College’s residence halls during the early morning hours on the day of the crowning.

EDUCATION Wehling takes on student adviser role with ISD 191 board Independent School District 191 officials said Sam Wehling’s leadership skills led him to his position as student adviser to the BES District 191 Board of Education. The senior at Burnsville High School was in his second year serving on the student council when his fellow council members nominated him onto the board last year. The district was one of the first districts in the state to have a student serve as a non-voting school board member representing the interests of students. Sam has been in charge of organizing events through the student council and has also been part of the school’s blood drive and Relay for Life. Now Sam is in his third year on the student council and said there was no formal training for the position on the school board. For the first meeting, he received a packet of information detailing discussion topics and said the meeting was centered on finances. Sam’s role on the board is to serve as a non-voting member and to provide the

board with a student’s viewpoint of what is going well and some potential problem areas of the school. Wehling attended William Byrne Elementary School and Metcalf Junior High School before coming to BHS. He is preparing for his college plans with college level Spanish 5 and calculus classes.

Mahowald selected ‘Business Person of the Year’ BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS In 1986, his mentor stood at the podium accepting the same award. Decades later, a Burnsville businessman found himself in the same position accepting the same award. Daniel Mahowald, co-owner of Cornerstone Copy Center, 13775 Frontier Ct., Burnsville, was announced as the Burnsville Chamber of Commerce Business Person Year for 2011 Thursday, Dec. 1, during a reception at the Best Western Premier Nicollet Inn, 14201 Nicollet Ave. S., Burnsville. Mahowald’s mentor, Ron Lund, started Cornerstone Copy Center in Burnsville in 1981 along with his wife Joyce. Mahowald was just a young man at the time, but in 1987, Ron hired the 1979 New Prague graduate, following some time spent at the then known Dakota County Vo-Tech where Mahowald received a two-year degree in graphic arts. Working as a production operator, Mahowald learned the business by not only doing his job but also watching and learning from Ron and Joyce. “Ron Lund was a great mentor,” Mahowald said, adding that Joyce was also an influential person in business. “I have

gotten a lot of what I know from him. They really brought me into this field and the business itself.” Ron’s hiring of Mahowald would prove to be the right choice. In 1987 Ron and Joyce both retired and sold their company to Mahowald and co-owner Warren Mosier. Since then, the company has grown, leading to an expansion in neighboring Lakeville in 2007. For Mahowald, as well as Mosier, customer satisfaction has been the number one goal for the business, so it should come as no surprise that what Mahowald feels is most rewarding in his business are his customers. “I enjoy when customers come in with a challenge,” Mahowald said, adding that many challenges are the result of recent changes in the industry due to technological advances. According to Mahowald, this area has been steady but changes frequently. “It’s quite a change in keeping up with the market,” Mahowald said of bringing in new technologies and using new equipment. The issue prompted Mahowald to recall just how much things have changed since buying the business from the Lunds. AWARD: TO NEXT PAGE

Award FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “Even from when we bought the company in 2001 to now, someone asks, ‘What do you have left from Ron?’” Adapting to new technologies that now exist in the printing industry may be an imperative in business, but Mahowald feels that community involvement is also important. Darlene Miller, the winner of last year’s Burnsville Chamber of Commerce award, cited Mahowald’s efforts to support community causes. “This individual, along with their business, has been an active supporter of not only the chamber but also the Burnsville Rotary, the Fire Muster, 360 Communities, and our local schools,” Miller said during her speech that led to the announcement of Mahowald as winner. These sentiments coincide with those of his business partner. Mosier said that Mahowald is one who often thinks of others, is a generous and caring person, as well as one who reaches out to others and serves as a supportive role model. Mosier also commented on other areas of Mahowald’s personality, saying that he is a natural leader and is not afraid to instruct others even if they are unknown to him. Mahowald was raised on a farm in New Market as the seventh of 11 children, with five brothers and five sisters. From a young age, Mahowald knew when it was time to work and when it was time to play. According to Mosier, his priorities were straight, as Mahowald knew that chores needed completion before any time for play could be made. In her presentation, Miller cited this area of Mahowald’s life. “Leadership skills were of importance

in such a large household, so telling folks what to do to keep up productivity was an early gift,” she said. “Clearly all the chores had to be done before playtime.” Miller also referenced how important family was to Mahowald, stating two of his favorite sayings from his parents. “Is it true, is it kind, and is it necessary?” his mother said, while his father often stated, “Don’t put your eggs all in one basket.” Mahowald and Mosier seemingly have used this advice to their advantage. Not long after their purchase of Cornerstone, the businessmen relocated from Cornerstone’s original location on Nicollet Avenue to its present Burnsville location at the corner of County Road 11 and McAndrews Road in 2004. Also that year, they purchased Ross Printing, thus diversifying their services. And in 2007, the two opened a second store in Lakeville to better serve their customers not only in Lakeville but also surrounding areas. “Our market expands south of the river,” Mahowald said. This year’s Business Person of the Year winner, however, was quick to mention the help of his employees, citing Paul and Linda Schwamb in particular. Linda runs Cornerstone in Lakeville, while Paul manages the Burnsville location’s production and day-to-day activities. Daron Van Helden, Burnsville Chamber of Commerce president, weighed in on Mahowald and his being chosen this year’s winner. “Daniel, and Cornerstone Copy, have had a long history of supporting the Burnsville community in visible ways,” Van Helden said. “It is a pleasure to be able to highlight a business and owner that knows the importance of serving their community, and better that they’ve benefited from it as well.”

Ten months later, let’s reassess Well, it’s been less than a year since I moved back to Minnesota from Mohave County, Ariz., but I’m starting to see how some people might like one more than the other. Personally, Minnesota is home and always will be the preferred locale, but I can understand how some might like the desert better, I guess. In efforts to illustrate my own train of thought, I’ve laid out a few pros and cons here. Maybe you’ll agree the Midwest trumps all, but then again, maybe not. Just as a note, I know there are differences by region in any state, but since I only lived in one county in Arizona, I’m making observations from just that area.

Climate Arizona

DANIEL CALLAHAN Sun-Current Managing Editor

activities. Con: Nine months of freezing temperatures and snow that clogs roads with traffic and, just last week, made me take my life in my hands just to get a gallon of milk.

Politics Pro: Warm and sunny with palm trees, cactuses, but still has the occasional rain shower to keep things interesting. Con: I don’t care what anyone says, 120 degrees is too hot to handle no matter how “dry” the heat is. And, when it rains, it floods. Like crazy. You’ve never lived until you’ve taken your Chevrolet Corsica off-roading through a flooded out mess of mud where a road used to be. Believe me. Minnesota: Pro: Absolutely beautiful summers with abundant outdoor

Arizona Pro: Arizonans are freedomloving people with a distinct love for the Constitution and the rights therein. Con: Whose interpretation of the Constitution are we talking about? Minnesota Pro: A healthy mixture of more liberal areas near cities are balanced with a more conservative rural out-state area. Con: Balance in political views doesn’t always mean things get done. State shutdown, anyone?

People Arizona Pro: Folks are fiercely independent in the desert. Con: A culture of “Are you out to take something from me?” persists. Minnesota Pro: The Minnesota Nice stereotype is largely true. Most people are polite and will help out however they can. Con: Don’t plan on getting anywhere on time; you’ve still got another 15 minutes of chatting with the gas station attendant about the weather before you can fill up.

Final judgment: Minnesota: Home. Arizona: Not home. No matter how it all shakes out, I’d still rather be here than anywhere else.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Friend perservering out of convictions To the editor: When Harry Truman said, “If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen,” he was referring to the fact that you shouldn’t take on a job or an issue if you are unwilling to face its pressures or consequences – not that if you don’t like something. For example, wood smoke, you should shut up and hide in your house with your windows and doors closed as a recent writer suggested (“Fireplace change feel-good symbolism,” Nov. 30 Edina SunCurrent). I personally know Julie Mellum, and she has taken on the issue of wood smoke because she understands the health risks associated with wood smoke and

because she believes that people should be able to enjoy their properties smoke-free and be able to enjoy the parks and public spaces in their communities smoke-free. She is especially sensitive to those people who are at greater risk when exposed to wood smoke such as people with asthma and heart disease, and children and the elderly such as my mother who has lived in Edina for more than 50 years but who now can’t enjoy her beautiful patio on summer evenings and open her windows at night because of the smoke from campfires in her neighborhood. Julie Mellum reflects the best of what Harry Truman meant when he said his famous quote because she perseveres even when the naysayers wish she wouldn’t. Mike Johnson Burnsville

With a database of more than 200,000 UPC codes, and still growing, users simply scan the code, and the application does the rest. “NextNutrio takes the guess work out of reading food labels,” Fuat said. “Today’s food product ingredient lists are very complex. You almost have to be a dietician or scientist to understand what is in the foods you eat.” According to Fuat, there also exists much confusion with regard to labels and the industry as a whole due to health claims and marketing hype. As a result, these consumers are making bad choices. “Many Americans want to make good dietary choices,” he said. “According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 80 percent of consumers read food labels in order to make better choices.” Because of this interest in healthy eating, the Kerkinnis set out to develop their app, which empowers shoppers to make quick, healthy food purchases, according to Fuat. He added his wife, Laurie, has studied these issues for years. “This is her everyday passion,” Fuat said. “Her passion is healthy food choices, and she lives by that everyday.” Their work on the app began about five years ago. And two years later, the couple first began developing the application. The bulk of this time was spent developing an ever-growing database of UPC codes, which is updated by approximately 30 per day. It is within these codes that all salient information is contained, at least for those seeking to avoid certain man-made additives, allergens, or ingredients that could aggravate a health condition. Once a UPC code is scanned, the app tells the consumer – by way of green, yellow, and red colors – which foods are safe, which should be consumed with caution, and which are either unhealthy or potentially harmful depending on one’s medical history. As an example, Laurie cited partially hydrogenated oils, which can cause issues related to heart disease, she said. “To eat well and enjoy your food is crucial. Healthy food is amazing. It keeps you out of the doctor’s office,” Laurie said. “The overall point is to help people. There are people who want to know.” Fuat cited the highlights of the application’s abilities, which were incorporated in the app for the average consumer’s benefit. According to Fuat, the app alerts consumers of potentially harmful ingredi-

The Kerkinnis released the app in October but have yet to launch a fullscale publicity campaign, and for the time being, they are funding all expenses on their own. “We don’t expect any profit off it in the short term,” Fuat said. “It could be six months to a year. Lakeville father, son appearing on ‘Ghost Adventures’ Sixteen-year-old’s submitted video wins contest BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS Little did a Lakeville teen realize that his passion for video production would land him in a South Carolina jail for a night.

Lakeville residents Rob and Dakota Laden will appear on the season five finale of Travel Channel’s “Ghost Adventures” 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 16. Through the efforts of Dakota, a 16-yearold aspiring videographer, a video contest allowed the father-son duo to join the show’s hosts in an investigation of the Old Charleston Jail in Charleston, S.C. With the assistance of family, Dakota produced a “mashup” video that won out of nearly 8,000 entries. According to Rob, the odds may have been slim, but nevertheless Dakota took a shot.

“Dakota is kind of the filmmaker in our family. Whatever [our children] do, we try to be very involved with them and help them as much as we can,” he said. “There were around seven thousand entries and the chances of his winning were very slim, but we thought we would help him with it.” With his video, Dakota enlisted the help of some of his family members – Rob, mother Polly, and sister Chelsey – to produce a video for the channel’s “mashup” contest, which allowed the contestants to use program clips mixed with their own, accompanied by a bed of hard rock music. “I was lip syncing. I was dressed up as the host of the show, Zak,” Dakota said of his winning video. “And my sister and my mom were dressed up as demons and skeletons in the background.” The chances of winning may have perhaps been slim, but due to Dakota’s seven years of using digital video technology, as well as four years of editing, seemingly played a role in his video’s being chosen. The tech enthusiast has won two separate awards for his work. “With his filmmaking, my wife, she’ll help them with the set. She’ll help them pick out costumes,” Rob said. “Even though it’s really his activity, we just help him like we would with any other activity.” The two departed for Charleston, S.C. on an all-expense paid trip for four days for the show, which was somewhat unique, according to Rob. “They’ve never really had anyone join them before, so it was kind of a big deal that they allowed someone to appear on the show with them,” Rob said, adding they’ve had people in the areas of the sites appear – those linked to the location in someway. The filming provided quite the experience for Dakota, especially with regards to his father. He spent the entirety of his time on the show in solitary confinement during their visit to what has come to be known as a “hot spot” for the paranormal activity. “There’s a lot of history behind that jail. We were locked in there with the three guys from the show,” Rob said. “They took Dakota and went around the jail with him, and they locked me in the solitary confinement cell.” Because contestants were required to be 18 years old, Rob entered the contest in his name for Dakota. While on the set, he explained the situation to the cast and crew. Taking their cue the hosts lightheartedly made the decision to put Rob in the cell, much to the amusement of his son. “For the whole night, he was in there

until we left,” Dakota said. “I was so happy. It was so funny.” Once the filming got underway, however, Zak, Nick, and Aaron, the hosts of the show, were all business, using various types of equipment to record evidence of ghost-like activity. As one whose interest is fully engulfed with making videos and using the tools, Dakota received special treatment in his few hours with the show’s members. “The whole jail was full of equipment. If they can capture any kind of evidence, that’s what there show is all about,” Rob said. “They had cameras everywhere. They had recorders all over the place. They had thermal cameras, and they had devices that monitor magnetic fields.” Though Rob and Dakota were instructed to not reveal any aspects of the show, which will air Dec. 16, the two did admit that there were some experiences they could not quite explain. “We had some weird stuff happen. I’m not going to lie,” Dakota said. “We did experience some things that left us questioning, ‘What the heck?’” Rob indicated there was a special moment, at least for him, following his release from the solitary confinement cell. According to Rob, Dakota’s years of activity working with video technology and the many videos he has posted to his Youtube account did not go unnoticed. Dakota has around 50,000 followers, some of whom are Zak, Nick, and Aaron. “What we learned is that they had been following him on Youtube for quite a while. They knew all of his videos. We were talking to them and for a while it felt like he was the star, not them,” Rob said. “They kept asking questions about his Youtube videos.” A few of Dakota’s videos were spoofs of the show, which the hosts found to be amusing in addition to being technologically advanced, according to the Lakeville teen. “They have seen my spoofs and actually thought they were really funny,” Dakota said. The highlight of the evening, however, for Rob had little to do with being on a popular TV program and more to do with how the three hosts treated his son during the time of working together. “I thought it was really, really neat that Zak, Nick, and Aaron, the whole time he was there they were teaching him about filmmaking and TV production,” he said. “They embraced him and tried to teach him a lot.” Since returning home, Dakota has updated his Youtube account, referencing the time spent on “Ghost Adventures,” which can be found online at youtube.com/shortfilmzz123.

Why the “Dealer’s Best Price” may not be “Your Best Price” The new car and truck business has become extremely competitive in the last few years. Margins have never been smaller, but advertising low prices just isn’t enough to move the needle anymore. Prices need to be “too good to be true” to stand out. This has caused an epidemic of misleading advertising that, unfortunately, wastes the customer’s time or leaves the honest dealer off many of their shopping lists. How does this happen? Well there are a number of ways to deceptively show an artificially low price. Most prevalent right now is advertising a price reduced by a number of rebates that 99% of shoppers aren’t eligible to receive. The incredibly low price looks like it applies to anyone, but once in the dealership you learn that you, like the majority of people, are not on some list or manifest. Your price is hundreds or even thousands more. General Motors as an example presently has over 20 programs to access niche markets. To show how obscure some of these target groups can be, the USAA Private Offer applies only to USAA members, so basically current or retired military that have purchased USAA insurance, yet the $750 rebate is routine in many advertised prices with little or no disclaimer. While these ads are certainly confusing, probably deceptive, and maybe even illegal, nobody has done much to curb their spread. The Better Business Bureau, State Attorney General, and maybe even the automobile manufacturers will certainly look into them on an individual basis, but their hands seem to be tied because there are a few people who might actually qualify. Ultimately, is this the kind of dealer you really want to enter into a relationship with? The Valley Group of GM Dealers is embarrassed for our industry and frustrated because it’s all so unnecessary. If you visit a Valley Store, the sales person can reference you personally on a factory incentive check website to insure you receive all the rebates and credits available. Then your trade can be estimated with a number of online tools like Kelly Blue Book or NADA. Finally you can view the factory invoice and we can mutually decide on an acceptable profit margin. It’s simple and completely transparent, or in other words “The Valley Way.” Thanks for taking the time, Jim Paul VP/GM Valley Automotive Group

PUBLIC SAFETY Lakeville Fire Department report, ice safety tips Members of the Lakeville Fire Department responded to 14 calls for service from Nov. 28 to Dec. 4: one passenger vehicle fire, one medical assist, two motor vehicle accidents with injuries, six false alarms, and four good intents. Winter Safety Tips As the temperature decreases over the winter months, members of the LFD would like to remind residents of ice safety. The general rules of thumb for ice are as follows: - If there are 2 or fewer inches of ice, residents are advised to stay off. - Good ice for a walking individual exists with 4 inches of ice. - Snowmobilers and ATV riders should wait until the ice is at least 6 inches thick. - Vehicles, such as a car or a small pick-up, should not enter onto ice until it is 8-12 inches thick. - Medium pick-up trucks should

COMMUNITY BRIEFS wait until the ice is 12-15 inches thick. LFD members also urge residents to check recent weather conditions before walking on ice, and if anyone falls into the water, residents are instructed to call 911 for immediate help.

One dumb Lakeville criminal nearly invites arrest One evening a few weeks ago, officers responded to a residence to arrest a subject with three active felony warrants out for his arrest. The officers walked to the front door of the residence and knocked. The subject, who had the warrants for his arrest, answered the door. He opened the door, apparently without looking to see who was standing on the other side. When he did open the door, he was standing right in front of the officers. The subject, knowing that he had warrants out for his arrested, quickly attempted to shut the door on the officers.

He was unsuccessful in his attempt, and the officers arrested him. The subject was taken into custody and placed in jail, where he will know who is on the other side of the jail door.

a higher grade. “It’s just more geared for those kids who are more ready to go to Kindergarten,” said SonShine Preschool Director Karri Nachtigal of Apple Valley. Currently, Nachtigal’s daughter Faith, 5, is the only student at SonShine Preschool, though the school is looking to have more students enroll beginning next year. This summer’s state government shutdown, Nachtigal said, pushed back certain permits and certifications the school needed to get up and running. The shutdown pushed back the school’s opening to October, after most other preschool’s classes had begun. For now, Nachtigal said it’s a great opportunity for Faith to have one-onone time with her teacher Judy Hein of Farmington. “I would like to see her class full,” Nachtigal said. “We just had to start somewhere.” When the school has more students enrolled, more teachers will be hired, Nachtigal said. The school’s goal is to have one teacher for every seven students and hopes to have three teachers on staff next year. SonShine Preschool is a faithbased learning environment, and people of all faiths are welcome to join. Students or their parents do not have to be members of Faith in Christ Fellowship Church to enroll. “We talk about God in our daily conversations,” Nachtigal said. “It’s a more Christian-based school.” Nachtigal said an important factor when parents choose a preschool is making sure it’s a good fit for their child. Clinic FROM PAGE 1 sle.” According to Moen, much of the constraints of which she speaks are tied to the nurse-doctor relationship. “The Nurse Practitioner [Modernization] Act requires us to have a collaborative agreement with a physician and a prescriptive agreement with a physician,” she said. “What that means is I need to find a physician who is willing to sign a piece of paper that says that they would be available for me if I had any questions on prescribing medications.” The collaborative agreement, according to Moen, essentially states that she would need to consult a physician regarding issues that are beyond her level of expertise. But, Moen cited what she believes is a flaw in the logic. “Everybody does that. Physicians do that,” Moen said. “We all work in a team. Everybody works in collaboration. It’s an unnecessary nuisance. That is a big reason why a lot of nurse practitioners haven’t gone out here to do this, because we are tied to that physician.” Luckily for Moen, as well as the patients who frequent her clinic, she has Dr. Sofi Ali on her staff to function in the aforementioned capacity, thus alleviating at least some of the burden associated with the NPMA. Moen, however grateful as she is to have Ali on her staff, did indicate that the doctor was not hired simply to have a physician available when needed. Moen said the reasons for her hire transcended legal aspects of the field. “We hired her because she and I had

worked together before, and she practices similarly to what we do,” Moen said. “Her style of practice is similar to what a nurse practitioner would do. She is not required to be present. She is present because this is her practice.” Despite the regulations on the industry in Minnesota, Moen has no inclination to leave it even though she has yet to turn a profit since first opening in 2005. Instead, Moen wishes to help more patients in ways she is currently unable to, simply by becoming a nonprofit. According to Moen, when she first opened her clinic near Pilot Knob and Diffley Road in Eagan it was with a different partner, and the arrangement unfortunately did not materialize as she had planned or hoped, much the result of the economic downturn that began a number of years ago. “And that was right before we opened Eagan Child and Family [Care]. That particular clinic left me in huge debt, so part of the reason we’re not making money is that we are still paying off some of that debt.” Moen made arrangements with her bank to assume a portion of the debt that remained from the original location. She did this to continue to operate and function with patients in mind first. “Our biggest thing is we are committed to serving our patients and supporting our staff,” Moen said. “Our staff gets paid and our rent, and everything else gets paid as we get money.” Another factor contributing to Moen’s lack of profit is the mixture of clients that routinely frequent her facility for healthcare needs. Moen said nearly half of her clientele do not exactly qualify as “normal” when it comes to patients. “When we look at our payer mix today, it’s about 47-percent of our patients who

either don’t have insurance or they have medical assistance, or they have a major medical plan – which is catastrophic insurance – but they don’t have anything to cover their day-to-day needs.” According to Ali, all at the clinic are more concerned with care than money. “We are committed to making sure that when anybody walks into our clinic that they get the exact same level of care that everybody else gets,” she said. Though the clinic has not turned a profit since its opening, they have come very close, but again for Moen and Ali, this is secondary to their main purpose of providing quality care to all the people have become known as faithful regulars. “When we look at a 12-month period of time, I think we had five months in the black and then seven months that were just barely in the red,” Moen said, emphasizing that the clinic is not as adversely impacted as one might think. Despite these issues, Moen and Ali remain committed to providing quality care to all who see them, regardless of their financial status or ability to pay, or not pay, in full. “When we did this move, we sat down and thought about this long and hard. I did for a few days,” Moen said. “Then I started looking at the patients. Our patients basically built this place for us,” Moen said. “They did all of the work inside. They did all of the painting. There were even people who don’t even come here as a patient who helped.” Ali, based on her opinion, provided an explanation as to why patients would become so involved in the move of their healthcare clinic. “We are different,” Ali said. “We are a little clinic. We know people’s names when they come in. I think our patients know we care about them, and they like

the service and the care that they get.” Moen continued by saying the individuals helped by putting up walls, tearing out carpet, laying new carpet, and painted the walls. “Actually, there was one family that did both places,” she said. “If parents couldn’t help with construction because they didn’t have those skills, they would bring food. They would feed the people who were doing the work. Everybody really wanted this to happen. I think that’s one of the reasons I’m highly motivated to tray to go nonprofit because a lot of people want to get involved.” The advantages of becoming a nonprofit, according to Moen, would mean the ability to provide more services to patients through alliances formed with other nonprofits in the healthcare industry. “There are some agencies that are really excited about what we do and would like to work with us, but they themselves are also nonprofit agencies,” Moen said. “In their bylaws, they can’t develop relationships with for profit agencies.” Moen and Ali stressed some personal feelings for considering nonprofit status. “The message that needs to be heard is we are not going nonprofit because of a revenue issue,” Moen said. “We’re going nonprofit because we want to provide more services, and we can’t develop these relationships with the corporate structure that we have. We need to change that structure.” “What we get out of it is we have one of the best jobs on Earth,” Ali said. “We get a window into people’s lives, and we have an opportunity to help them,” she said. “We can’t make everybody better, but we can help them deal with whatever condition they have.”

Giving back is no accident for Dakota County child Nine-year-old featured in KS95’s Kid Radiothon fundraiser Dec. 9-10 BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Apple Valley resident Ahna PowersBrekke has had a rougher life than most of her peers. Though only 9 years old, Ahna is two

years removed from major orthopedic surgery needed to reconstruct her right foot after an accident she had at age 2. Now, Ahna had the chance to give back to the hospital that performed her surgery. Ahna was featured in the 13th annual KS95 Kid Radiothon Dec. 9-10, an annual fundraiser hosted by the FM radio station. The proceeds from the fundraiser are split between Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul – where Ahna had her surgery – and Children’s Cancer

Research Fund. The Powers-Brekke family’s story was shared, along with five other Gillette Children’s families, live from the Mall of America Bloomingdale’s Court. When Ahna was 16 months old, she got her legs caught in the spindle of her crib. “What happened is they got caught in a way that caused nerve damage in her lower right leg,” said Brian PowersBrekke, Ahna’s father. Her parents rushed her to the emergency room where hospital staff discovered a blood clot, which is potentially life threatening. Ahna spent the next week in the hospital, receiving treatment for the blood clot. After she was released, Ahna’s parents had to treat the clot on their own. “Her mother and I continued to administer blood thinners with injections,” Brian Powers-Brekke said. Ahna’s blood clot eventually dissipated and she went through many diagnostic tests to figure the extent of the injury and a lot of therapeutic procedures to help with her recovery, Brian said. As she grew older, the nerve damage did not improve and Ahna developed a muscle imbalance in her right foot and eventually, her right foot became deformed. Brian said his daughter had difficulty running and keeping up with her friends when they played tag. “I really felt bad because I could never really run or play with my friends,” Ahna said. “When my foot was still bad, I wanted to play tag and I couldn’t.” Ahna went through more therapeutic procedures, but her parents were just postponing the inevitable. “At some point, we knew she would need to have some surgical intervention, but we wanted to stave that off for as long as possible,” said Brian. When she was 7, Ahna underwent a complex orthopedic surgery to essentially bring her right foot into a more normal position, said Brian Powers-Brekke. Ahna recalls not wanting to go through with the procedure. “I just remember I was kind of freaking out and I really didn’t want to do it, but I knew it was for the good of my foot,” she said. Her surgery went well with no complications, said Brian. “If you saw her with her friends or walking down the street, you wouldn’t know she had an injury,” he said. “So, she’s an absolute success story.” Ahna knew the surgery went well because she could now keep up with her friends. “I think I had to stay in the hospital for couple weeks,” she said. “Afterwards, I felt

Ahna began taking Tae Kwan Do classes as a way to improve her balance following major orthopedic surgery on her right foot when she was 7 years old. (Submitted photo) pretty good. After I got off the crutches, I could play tag.” Ahna’s surgeon, Dr. Deborah Quanbeck, recommended martial arts for Ahna. This type of discipline teaches and improves balance – essential for rebuilding strength in Ahna’s right foot. On her doctor’s recommendation, Ahna began taking Tae Kwan Do classes at Minnesota Valley Martial Arts in Apple Valley. “Martial arts really got my foot in shape and I made new friends with the instructors and all my classmates,” said Ahna, who recently received her brown belt. She hopes to receive her black belt next year. Ahna’s resolve helped her overcome the hours of rehabilitation following her surgery. “You never hear her complain about her leg,” Brian said. “She sees herself as a normal kid. She’s an inspiration to all of us, really.”

MATURE LIFESTYLES 529 college savings plan: a gift that keeps on giving The holiday season has arrived, and that means grandparents are seeking the perfect gift for their children and grandchildren. Hours spent at crowded shopping malls or perusing online retailers often prove fruitless, and shoppers commonly settle for something that falls short of perfect. While a trendy toy or must-have gadget might prove popular today, perhaps no gift is more universal and enduring than the gift of education. Shoppers can give that gift by setting up or making contributions to a 529 plan, an education savings plan that has special tax benefits

designed to help people save for college. FinAid.org notes that families who put aside just $50 per month from the time a child is born can grow a nest egg of more than $20,000 by the time that child turns 18, assuming a 7 percent return on investment. Those who increase their contributions to $100 per month can yield more than $43,000 by the time their youngster is ready to enter college. In addition, anyone can contribute, making it ideal for relatives who aren’t sure what to get for their school-aged special someone this holiday season.

Is it difficult for you to hear? A major name brand hearing aid provider has a special one time offer – a FREE trial on a remarkable new hearing instrument in your area. The holiday season is a wonderful time to see how well you could be hearing your children, your grandchildren, and your friends.

This offer is free of charge and you are under no obligation. These computerized digital hearing instruments use the latest technology. They are so small, they hide out of sight, while performing millions of precise calculations per second to give you the highest range of comfortable hearing. These instruments are clinically demonstrated to improve hearing in noisy environments.

If you wish to participate, you will be required to have your hearing evaluated FREE of charge to determine candidacy. You will be asked to wear the hearing instruments for three weeks and report the results to our trained specialists. After the trial, you may purchase your instruments, if you so desire, at a greatly reduced charge. Otherwise, there is no fee, whatsoever, for participating in this trial.

He also works full-time at UPONOR – a heating, cooling and plumbing installation company – as a teacher and trainer. His wife, Kathy Swanson, said they felt called to start a church in a city rich with other places of faith. “We really felt called to walk alongside the other churches in the area,” Kathy Swanson said. “We wanted to come support the community.” The church has a food and clothing shelf for those in need in the area, she said. The church also provides support in the form of prayer. “Our whole philosophy for our church is to reach our community both practically and spiritually,” Kathy Swanson said. The church also reaches out on an international scale. For more than a decade, the Swansons have been leading mission teams to Zambia, Africa, to support the people there medically and spiritually.

Nachtigal’s father, Steven Swanson, is the full-time senior pastor at Faith in Christ Fellowship – an unpaid position.

The Just 3’s classes have two verbal enrollments for classes beginning in January 2012, Nachtigal said, though they have not yet officially registered. Nachtigal said that though Ahna does not have classmates at the moment, her learning process has not been stunted. “Even though she’s the only one in there… she talks to more people now – just growing and learning social skills and things like that,” Nachtigal said, adding that Faith used to be quite shy.

Depth is one reason for Panthers’ high hopes

Rosemount, Lakeville North win SSC swim openers

John Oxton said Flack is on schedule for returning in early January. Flack averaged 11.2 points last season. One person who has helped replace his front-line presence is senior Garrett Gidlow, who “has played really well in our first three games,” Oxton said. Lakeville North was one of four South Suburban Conference teams in last week’s state Class 4A rankings. Eastview was second, Apple Valley was

Two of the state’s top-ranked boys swimming teams started their seasons in the same Lakeville pool Dec. 9. But they did not compete against each other, at least in the official sense. The opening week of South Suburban Conference boys swimming meets included a double-dual at Kenwood Trail Middle School. The host teams – Lakeville North and Lakeville South – earned a split. Lakeville North, ranked fifth in Class AA, defeated Eastview 94-83. Fourthranked Rosemount beat Lakeville South 97.5-80.5. The Irish lineup includes four seniors – Braden McCormack, Jacob Stern, Luke Dowell and Conor Manning – who finished second in the 200-yard individual medley at the 2011 state Class AA meet. Stern (200 medley relay), Dowell (100 butterfly) and Manning (50 freestyle) all won events in the season opener against Eastview. McCormack had the fastest time (55.76 seconds) in the 100 backstroke but technically was not credited with the victory because the Irish had an insurmountable lead and were swimming exhibition (unscored) in the final few events. Stern had the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke, another event where Rosemount swam exhibition. Daniel Monaghan (diving), Sheldon Hatlen (100 freestyle) and Andrew Urness (500 freestyle) also won individual events for the Irish. Rosemount won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays and had the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay, an exhibition event for the Irish. Lakeville South’s Mitch Herrera won the 200 freestyle, edging Rosemount’s Urness. Lakeville North had a 49-point lead against Eastview before swimming exhi-

North boys hoops team starts 3-0 despite missing 2 regulars BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Depth was expected to be one of the Lakeville North boys basketball team’s strengths, but even the Panthers might not have realized how valuable it would be early in the season. Two players who were expected to start have been out of the lineup, but the Panthers are doing more than just surviving. They started 3-0 and are ranked eighth in Class 3A. North’s game against Champlin Park at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic on Dec. 10 was an example of how it’s making do. Forwards Brett Rasmussen and Ryan Saarela combined for 43 points and a solid collection of guards helped keep the Rebels at bay as North won 63-50. The guard depth “definitely allows us to play a little bit of pressure [defense] and played a faster game,” North coach John Oxton said. Saarela said the Panthers met most of their goals in the Champlin Park game. “We were able to play inside and out, and I think we had a little more depth,” said Saarela, a senior co-captain. The Panthers returned five of their top six scorers from last season’s 12-15 team –Rasmussen, Saarela, Tyler Flack, Devin Shockley and Trey Heid. Heid is a co-captain along with Saarela. “After last season, we all thought we could be really good,” Saarela said. “Our goal is the state championship.” Saarela, a 6-foot-5 senior, and Rasmussen, a 6-4 senior, are averaging 18.3 and 17.3 points through the

Guard Zach Creighton scored 14 points in a 6866 victory over Chanhassen on Dec. 9. Seniors Tyler David and Joel Oxton, as well as juniors Kyrell Newell and Grant Erickson, add to the depth at guard. Shockley, who averaged 7.2 points last season, has not played yet but is expected to return next week. Flack, a 6-7 forward who has signed with the University of South Dakota, has been out since breaking his wrist in a preseason jamboree in Edina.

Basketball FROM PAGE 1 sixth and Prior Lake was 10th. Apple Valley has guard Tyus Jones, the state’s top college prospect. “Eastview will be good. They have almost everybody back and they can shoot it,” Saarela said. “Prior Lake will be big, and they can shoot it.” “It’s just a good league, a really good league,” Oxton said. North’s state championship aspirations might be helped by its return to Class 4A, Section 1 for the postseason. Last season seven South Suburban schools – including the Lakeville teams, Apple Valley and Eastview – were piled into Section 3. Lakeville North is the only SSC team in Section 1 (Lakeville South was moved to Section 2). No other Section 1 teams are currently in the top 10 of the Class 4A rankings. “It’ll be like the section we had a few years ago,” Oxton said. “After a long regular season, it’s nice to play some different teams.”

Lakeville South Coach: John Sheehan. Last season: 21-9 overall; won Class 4A, Section 3 championship. So far: lost to Wayzata 76-64 on Dec. 2; defeated White Bear Lake 68-67 on Dec. 6. Next game: 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at home against Hill-Murray. Outlook: The top seven scorers from last year’s state tournament team have graduated, leaving opportunities for others to prove themselves. Senior guard Matt Heller, who averaged 3.1 points a game last season, is the only Cougars player who saw significant varsity court time in 2010-11. The cupboard might not be bare, however; some of this year’s varsity candidates

Swimming FROM PAGE 1 bition. Senior Trae Schindler, who qualified for state in two events in 2011, won the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle in the season opener. Ryan Young (200 individual medley), Hunter Burchfield (50 freestyle), Tim Mitchell (100 butterfly) and Nathan Regan (500 freestyle) also won events for Lakeville North. Zachary Smith swam the fastest time in the 100 backstroke, by which time the Panthers were swimming exhibition. North also finished first in the 200 medley relay.

played for a South junior varsity team that lost just two games last season. Balanced scoring could be one thing in the Cougars’ favor. Nick Sanborn, a senior forward, scored a game-high 19 points as the Cougars edged White Bear Lake on Dec. 6. Junior forward Jordan Johnson had 12 points and senior forward Nick Bachinski added 10. Eight played scored for South in the White Bear Lake game. Sanborn (16 points), senior guard Jordan Flynn (12), Johnson (11) and junior guard Corey Larson (10) scored in double figures in the season opener against Wayzata.

Burnsville Coach: Matt Eppen. Last season: 12-14 overall; lost in Class 4A, Section 3 quarterfinals. So far: lost 94-46 to Hopkins on Dec. 6. Next game: 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Chaska. Outlook: The Blaze didn’t have to wait long to find out how it measures up against the best teams in Class 4A. Burnsville opened against three-time defending state champion Hopkins, followed by a game Dec. 13 (after this edition went to press) against Eden Prairie, which played in last year’s state title game. Burnsville will roll out a largely new lineup. Before this season, only center Chase Roullier (36 points in 2010-11) and forward Ryan Swanson (10 points) had scored in a varsity game. Roullier is the only player who has started at the varsity level. Roullier and Swanson are two of the Blaze’s three captains. The other is senior guard Zach Maxon. Guards Bryan Heard and Marshon McIntosh and forward A.J. Coleman are the other seniors on the Blaze roster. Adam Saba and Tommy Peerboom scored nine points each in the Blaze’s season-opening loss to Hopkins.

Eastview swept the top three places in diving, with Patrick O’Neill taking first. In other meets from the first week of South Suburban Conference boys swimming, Bloomington Jefferson defeated Apple Valley 91-78, Prior Lake beat Burnsville 101-55 and Eagan swamped Bloomington Kennedy 130-55. Bloomington Jefferson swims at Eastview and Burnsville goes to Bloomington Kennedy in SSC dual meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15. Three other meets are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 16: Apple Valley at Prior Lake, Rosemount at Eagan and Lakeville North against Lakeville South. – Compiled by Mike Shaughnessy

Notebook: Blaze moves to top division for Schwan Cup Burnsville gets to play on the big stage. The Blaze, ninth in last week’s state Class AA boys hockey rankings, will play in the top division at the Schwan Cup holiday tournament for the first time. That means Burnsville will play at least one game at Xcel Energy Center the final week of December. Burnsville will play No. 1-ranked Duluth East in a Gold Division quarterfinal game at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26, at Ridder Arena on the University of Minnesota campus. All quarterfinal games are at Ridder Arena, but semifinal and consolation semifinal games will be at Xcel Energy Center on Tuesday, Dec. 27. The Gold Division championship game will be 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Xcel Energy Center. Games for third, fifth and seventh places will be at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine. Also in the Gold Bracket are St. Thomas Academy, Holy Angels, HillMurray, Minnetonka, Blaine and Edina. Hill-Murray won the division last year. Burnsville is 3-1 overall after defeating Benilde-St. Margaret’s 5-1 and Rosemount 8-1 last week. Burnsville trailed second-ranked BSM 1-0 after one period of their Dec. 8 game before scoring five unanswered goals. Mason Wyman scored twice and Hunter Anderson had one goal and four assists. The Blaze’s biggest star might have been goalie Chris Mallon, who stopped all but one of BSM’s 58 shots on goal. Lakeville South and Apple Valley also will play in the Schwan Cup. Both will be in the Silver Division tournament. Lakeville South plays Stillwater at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 26 at the Schwan Super Rink, followed by Apple Valley against Breck at 3. The Silver Division championship game will be at Xcel Energy Center at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 28.

recruit had more than 4,000 yards of total offense, 35 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns for a team that reached the state Class 4A semifinals. One South Suburban Conference player was a Mr. Football finalist – Lakeville North quarterback Trey Heid, who helped lead the Panthers to the conference and Class 5A, Section 1 championships.

Eagles still team to beat Apple Valley’s wrestling team will go to the Minnesota Christmas Tournament this weekend in Rochester in its customary role as favorite. Matches will be Friday, Dec. 16, and Saturday, Dec. 17, at University Center. The final round is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Apple Valley won the 2010 championship by 52 points over runner-up Simley. It could be another race to the title between those two schools as both are in the top 10 of the InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News national rankings. Apple Valley opened its season with victories at tournaments in Faribault and Delano and dual-meet wins over Prior Lake and Burnsville. Gannon Volk (106 pounds), Maolu Woiwor (113), Seth Gross (126), Shamar Williams (132), Cory Rathman (138), Dayton Racer (145), Mason Manville (152), Mark Hall (160), Brandon Kingsley (170), Paul Cheney (195) and Zach Martens (285) were weight-class champions for Apple Valley in the Delano tourney.

Girls hockey update Lakeville North has opened a lead in the South Suburban Conference girls hockey race, but several local teams remain in contention. The Panthers are 4-0-1 in five league games. Tied for second are Eastview and Bloomington Jefferson, both 3-2. Lakeville South, Rosemount and Eagan are in a tie for fourth, each at 21-1. The standings could shake out a bit Saturday, Dec. 17, when Rosemount plays at Eagan at 3 p.m. and Eastview goes to Lakeville South for a game at 7:15. – Compiled by Mike Shaughnessy

Something for everyone, even on a short timeline The Christmas countdown has begun, and the days will no doubt fly off the calendar like they do every year. Before you know, it's only a few days until the holiday is here. Those who haven't yet started shopping may feel pressed for time and worry that they will not be able to find gifts for everyone on their lists -- at least gifts that don't look like they were afterthoughts. But good gifts can be found in the eleventh hour.

First Issue Debuts January 19, 2012 Editorial Focus: Health & Wellness Second Issue Publishes February 16th Editorial Focus: Financial Planning Story ideas to kjeck@acnpapers.com. Boomerang will publish monthly in 2012.

Adults •Visit the local liquor store for a bottle of wine in the price range desired. Wrap it in a wine bag or leave it as is with a nice bow. •Pick up passes to a local attraction, such as an amusement park or a museum. Put together tickets for a play paired with a soundtrack of the production. •Food is often appreciated. A box of fine chocolates or one of those edible fruit arrangements will be a tasteful, and tasty, gift. •Fill a large bowl with a scooper, sprinkles, cherries, and other toppings for making ice cream sundaes. •Pick a gift that embraces the holiday spirit. Holiday music, ornaments or table decorations can be used this year or next.

Getting kids gifts that inspre creativity will make them happy and keep them busy.

Children Pop into a toy store or a department store and pick up a cuddly stuffed animal. Buy an art set for older children, full of paints and markers. If a complete set can't be found, make an art package with a bunch of supplies packed into a gift bag. Choose an educational gift that is still fun, like alphabet flash cards or puzzles. A subscription to a children's magazine would also work, seeing as children love getting mail. Few kids will turn down a DVD of their favorite television characters. The DVDs should feature an age-appropriateness rating to make choosing one even easier. Teenagers Teenagers can be finicky, so a monetary gift will be one-size-fits-all. Teenage girls may appreciate a gift basket of delicious scented lotions. Passes for movies can make date night less expensive. Consider a gift card or e-gift coupon for digital music downloads. Give a subscription to a teen magazine so that everyone can keep abreast of their favorite celebrities.
