COMMUNITY BRIEFS

The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board has dismissed the complaint filed by DFL Chairman Ken Martin against Sen. Dave Thompson (R-Lakeville). In a letter dated Thursday, Jan. 26, the board stated there is no basis for a claim against Thompson. “Under the authority delegated to me by the board, I have reviewed the complaint and concluded that it does not provide a sufficient basis for the commencement of a board investigation,” Executive Director Gary Goldsmith said in the letter. Martin filed a complaint against Thompson Monday, Jan. 23, with the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board regarding an alleged failure to disclose payments made by the Republican Party of Minnesota. Thompson said he complied with all disclosure requirements. “Therefore, I am not surprised by the board’s decision,” he said. “Still, it is gratifying to see a clear statement from Mr.

Lakeville student thespians honored for StarKid participation Five briefly perform in Chanhassen Dinner Theater’s ‘Hairspray’ BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS From their school’s theater to the big stage, five Lakeville student were afforded a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity showcase their talent. Five Lakeville students were honored at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres recently for their participation in CDT’s StarKid program, which recognizes students for excellence in musical theatre. As a part of the honor, the students were given the opportunity to briefly perform in CDT’s current version of the musical classic “Hairspray,” and the program ran through all of November 2011 and January 2012. In that time the theater honored a total of 100 student actors statewide. The students attend Lakeville North and Lakeville South high schools, as well as the St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists. The students selected for the program were Briley Fenimore, Hannah Johnson, McCall

Halliday, Brendon Jones, and Andrew Kohagen. According to Kris Howland, public relations director for CDT, theater experts at each school were asked to select the students. “We leave it purely to the teachers to send us their finest,” Howland said. “The students do not have to be looking at a future career in musical theatre, but we find many of them actually are interested in pursuing those goals. Some are just plain musical theater lovers.” This year, because the theater honors 100 students each season, CDT officials decided to spread out the honors between November and January. Howland said it was because CDT officials knew the month of December would be difficult due to holiday concerts and perhaps vacations. Howland explained the honor and what it entails for each winner. “As part of their experience, the students received lines to memorize, were given dressing rooms, and an opportunity to work with cast members to learn choreography before experiencing an actual walk-on role in ‘Hairspray,’” she said. Howland said the honor is not cere-

college and beyond, but will do without a career in the industry. Choir Director Paul Wigley nominated the senior to perform at CDT, the state’s only year-round professional musical theater. Fenimore said the time spent preparing for and actually taking the stage took around 45 minutes total. “We each had one line to memorize, and when we got there, we were taught a couple short dance steps and then we went on stage,” Fenimore said. “It was really exciting for me personally. It was just really cool to kind of go behind the scenes of a pro theater. It was really good learning experience.” After this period, students were allowed to watch the remainder of the performance from a seat in the audience. Fellow LNHS senior Hannah Johnson took a moment to share about her experience. Like Fenimore, Wigley nominated her. “It was really cool,” she said, adding that the performers may not be household names but they are certainly famous to her. “I would like to be at their level.” STARKID: TO NEXT PAGE

Each StarKid received a personal greeting by a theatre representative, an escort to their private dressing room and introduction to the stage manager. “Each StarKid received the rare opportunity to meet with the dance captain for a private choreography lesson for the show,” Howland said, adding that each student had publicity photos taken and met briefly with the actors they were working with on their scenes. “From that point, it was backstage they went to hang out with cast members and wait for their big entrance,” she said. “StarKids were in one complete scene and enjoyed about eight minutes on stage for their star turn.” Briley Fenimore, a senior at LNHS, was in eighth grade when his interest in theater first became apparent to him. He recalled his first time ever on stage. “I think it would have been my sophomore year in high school in ‘Hello Dolly,’” Fenimore said. “It definitely started my love for theater.” Since, Fenimore has sustained his activity in theater at LNHS, and he intends to continue performing through

Living the Dream

StarKid FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Hannah’s appearance on the professional stage occurred Nov. 29, with some perks. “We also got shown around and got to meet a few of the actors,” she said. Also like Fenimore, Hannah said her future plans did not exclude performing. “I would like to continue,” she said. “But right now I am interested in a career in the medical field.” Currently age 17, the Lakeville senior first took to performing three years ago, and she said that community theater is an area of interest she would like to continue. She said her bucket list includes performing on Broadway. The StarKid program began in the spring of 2010, and Howland explained its purpose. “The purpose of StarKid was to recognize and honor local high school musical theatre talent in the most unique way possible – by offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for gifted students to actually perform on the professional musical theatre stage,” she said. But Howland added that the students were not the only being honored by the program. “It was a way to honor the students and also to thank so many teachers in our Minnesota schools for supporting the work we do here at CDT,” she said. “Statistics clearly bear out that students who are not exposed to the arts before age 18, will never be arts patrons. We value the teachers in the schools who want their students to have a musical theatre or art experience.”

Ivory Doublette, formerly of Apple Valley, is a professional actress who studied theater arts at the University of Minnesota, and is a cast member of “Hairspray.” “In 2010, I started with Chanhassen with ‘Nunset Boulevard,’” she said, adding that this was part of series called Nunsense, mainly the story of five nuns who are constantly getting in trouble. Doublette’s career has included performing with the Children’s Theatre Company before joining the cast at CDT. She had a role in the children’s theater’s production of “High School Musical.” “It was a specific show,” she said. “But I had always wanted to work for the Children’s theater.” In total, Doublette said she has performed in more than 210 times, including roles in an Elvis tribute titled “All Shook Up” and “Cinderella.” For Doublette, she derives excitement on stage for what performances allow their audiences. “I believe it’s allowing the audience to step away from reality, really enjoying themselves for that two and a half hours,” she said. As a black woman, Doublette said that her role in “Hairspray” holds special significance due to the show’s dealing with segregation. The professional actress said “Hairspray” delivers great messages about the significant historical subject, as well as teaching teens what it was like during this period of American history. “’Hairspray takes place in 1962 Baltimore at the height of desegregation. The play deals with the issues of racial integration,” Howland said. “Ivory is an astonishing young AfricanAmerican actress.”

A portrait of a depraved sports fan This op-ed space is typically used to write about that which is novel, pontificate on that which writers deem important and to ask difficult and timely questions. This column falls into the latter category. What do I do now that football season is over? OK. Perhaps the difficulty of this question is suspect, but it does need to be asked for my sanity, if nothing else. Since the National Football League owners and NFL Player’s Association came to a working agreement to play games in 2011, I digested all that was football around the clock. I read countless online football articles. I drafted, managed, over managed, and sometimes under managed my two fantasy football teams. I listened to Vikings radio shows daily and I’m not even a Vikings fan. The point is, I couldn’t get enough football. With the Super Bowl over, it will be another seven months

MATTHEW HANKEY Eagan/Apple Valley Community Editor before another snap is taken in a regular season NFL game. Yes, the NFL will hold its rookie combine later this month and rookies will attend minicamp practices in the spring. Training camps begin in earnest in the heart of summer, but that’s a long ways off. Let’s review some options for how I could spend my time between now and September. Finding another spectator sport seems like the logical outlet for me. As a diehard Badgers fan, it has been fun to watch the men’s basketball team in the hunt for another Big 10 title. But, let’s be realistic. They will likely be eliminated from the NCAA Tournament before the Final

Four and will not compete for a title this year. Moving on. This winter has been strange for a few reasons, weather included. Notably, I’ve found myself watching NBA basketball for the first time since Michael Jordan retired for the second time in 1999. Growing up in Wisconsin, I didn’t root for the Milwaukee Bucks and I feel no allegiance to them now that I live in Minnesota. With that said, watching this year’s Timberwolves team has restored my faith in the small market NBA team. As of the paper’s deadline, the team is 13-13 and on the cusp of the playoff hunt. In this shortened NBA season, there are 16 fewer games packed into a tighter schedule. The ’Wolves often play three games in 4-5 days, ideal for television viewers during the doldrums of February sports viewing. Power forward Kevin Love

was just named to the NBA AllStar team and point guard Ricky Rubio and forward Derrick Williams will take part in the rookie/second-year player game during the All-Star weekend. This team is young, talented and potentially a force to be reckoned with this season. Because I am a new fan of the team, my expectations are high and not subject to the years of failure in the 2000s. Besides sports, catching up on reading fiction novels has long been on my backburner. With a job that requires constant reading, writing, re-reading and rewriting, reading for fun has lost some of its luster for me. I know I should give that copy of “Cold Mountain” on my nightstand another try. At the very least, it needs a good dusting. Yes, that’s it. Reading more is the obvious answer, which answers my initial question. Why didn’t I ask myself this earlier?

Heinzman FROM PREVIOUS PAGE other, except for the traditional marital status and solemnities. Back in 2008, former Gov. Tim Pawlenty vetoed legislation that would have allowed partners of state, federal and city employees to a have the same benefits reserved for married couples. His veto, however, didn’t prohibit individual cities from approving an ordinance for their own domestic partner registry. Minneapolis, St. Paul, Edina, Golden Valley, St. Louis Park, Eagan and Richfield have approved these registries. Rochester, Red Wing and Duluth also have them. The Eden Prairie City Council wrestled with the registry before approving it on second reading, 4-1. One council member, Brad Aho, said it wasn’t needed, that only nine people in neighboring Edina registered for the benefits and only 2 percent of the cities in the state have adopted it. More to the point, he argued that the ordinance undermines marriage because it infers that any marriage is as equal as the partnership. Council member Kathy Nelson said the proposal has nothing to do with the proposed marriage amendment that will be on the ballot in November. “The ordinance,” she said, “does not make a state-

ment in favor of or against any state law, and it is not political.” Another council member, Sherry Butcher Wickstrom, reminded that the city has a Manifesto which encourages diversity. It’s a way of acting and not just talking about diversity, she said. Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens was surprised more people didn’t object to the registry. The pattern in cities where it has been passed is that most people find the registry reasonable. The mayor struck the right chord when she said: “The ordinance may not affect many people, but we deal with things that affect a small number of people all the time, as well as decisions that face all Eden Prairie residents.” That’s the genius of local government; it is local enough to be concerned about all of its neighbors. This action by the Eden Prairie City Council is to be commended, because it enables citizens to get benefits under the law regardless of their marital status as long as they live together in their community. Other cities should follow Eden Prairie’s example. Don Heinzman is an editorial writer for ECM Publishers. Sun Newspapers welcomes responses to this and any other editorial page commentary. Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-

tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. In addition to exposing these truths about thyroid treatment, Dr. Gilman will also discuss natural solutions to help thyroid problems. Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating for Dr. Gilman’s private thyroid seminar is limited. It will be held on Wednesday, February 22nd at 7:00 PM at the Holiday Inn Express, 1950 Rahncliff Ct., Eagan. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

Expert empowers business owners with new, online technologies Apple Valley company says benefitting greatly from services BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS One local business is growing more than just produce. Instead, it is growing its own online community. Pahl’s Market, 6885 160th St. W., Apple Valley, is one business that has significantly increased its visibility and customer base using the services of Checkerboard Strategic Web Development, 350 W. Burnsville Parkway, Burnsville, which specializes in creating dynamic, hard-working websites that play an important role in its clients’ marketing plans. As a strategic Internet marketing expert, Checkerboard President Jason Kocina often meets with local mid-sized businesses that are either entering into social media marketing for the first time or are making a fresh attempt after trying to on their own with limited success. Companies that once didn’t see the need for social media marketing are now beginning to reap its benefits. “The best way to drive sales is through a simple marketing program

Weekly Super Savings!

including blogging, search engine optimization, social media and email communication,” he said. Kocina said the problem many companies face is actually two-fold: first, the tool set many use is outdated and often inefficient; second they don’t always know how to get organized to deliver the steady stream of fresh content connecting the business with its customers and prospects. At a time when it seems each year brings newer tools for social media and its broadening applications, a commensurate demand is being created. According to Kocina, the demand for websites that do not require an IT specialist to manage it is growing as well. Kocina’s solution was to change his product. “Marketing is merging together with sales, PR and customer service. More than ever, it is important to have a communications tool set…employees can manage,” he said. Calling their product MarketSmart Powersites, instead of trying to immediately construct a full content-rich website, Kocina’s team helps businesses set up a process to gradually add content that is of value to their customers and prospects. “The site becomes the publishing

point for all new content. As your adding content, it’s getting organized appropriately,” Kocina said. “Owners need to be actively engaged in social media because that’s the way people are getting information.” Jason Himmelwright, marketing associate at Pahl’s Market, said he can attest to the success his company has attained due to quickly and efficiently disseminating information using the tools put in place by Checkerboard. “They’ve done well with that because we didn’t even know what it was,” Himmelwright said of social media when Pahl’s began using Checkerboard and its services. “It has taken us to the next level.” In fact, Pahl’s Market has reached a point now where its company’s website is getting around 23,000 visits per month during peak times. “We converted Pahl’s Market’s existing website Jason Kocina into a powersite, and it became a content distribution machine,” Kocina said. In the first year after adding social media to its marketing mix, the Pahl’s Market website experienced a 78 percent

increase of traffic from search engines, along with the 23,000 visits a month, and its email subscriber list has almost doubled to around 9,000 names. “Our website traffic is now competitive with some of the larger nurseries in town,” Himmelwright said. He credits frequent blogs, Facebook posts, emails and Tweets for creating connections, especially with younger customers who generally are more in tune with such tools. “Nowadays you’ve got to do social media. But you can’t invest the time and money into a blog, for example, and think you’re done. You’ve got to continue to post regularly for your customers take notice,” he added. “I can even have it send emails. It definitely saves time.” Himmelwright even commented on how he can schedule posts in advance, which allows for the marketer to not have to be sitting in front of a computer at all times. “I can be fishing in Canada, and post new information while I’m away,” he said. According to Kocina, a project for Pahl’s was to build an online plant library, which features more than 1,200 different species. Himmelwright said that this has been very effective for Pahl’s Market. “We now have people contacting us from across the U.S. because we often come up higher in the search engines than the companies that created or grow the plants,” he said. “We haven’t had to do a lot of promotion for our plant library because of the way it was created.” Himmelwright added that because of Pahl’s success, its competitors are playing catch-up, trying to create the same model, one that keeps geography in mind. “You could have someone in North Carolina enter a plant we have on our website, and we’ll come up first,” he said. “We get so many people locally, and they have just done a good job with that.” According to Kocina, much of the credit for Pahl’s plant library success is on account of WordPress, and Checkerboard’s ability to utilize all of its best capabilities to communicate with search engines. “Because we now work almost exclusively with this toolset, we know how to take full advantage of what it can do,” Kocina said. Himmelwright commented specifically to the service Checkerboard has provided, namely one project coordinator in particular – Carrie Thunshelle. He said it is great to work with Thunshelle. “They’ve got us to where we are now. We could be where without them,” he said. “ “She is there the whole way,” he said.

Burnsville residents Joanne Malloy, left, and Jim Luckman counted straw poll votes Tuesday, Feb. 7, during the House District 40A precinct 2 caucus. Presidential candidate Rick Santorum received 18 votes, while Mitt Romney followed with 11. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul received eight apiece. (Photo by Michael Ricci – Sun Newspapers)

that he was voting for Paul, saying his economic ideas were at least one reason. But the first-time caucus participant said Romney would not exactly be a bad choice either. “I have nothing against Romney,” he said. “He would be my second choice.” Rasmussen, who attended the caucus with his wife, Sovanny, said he likes Romney for his family-values. Meanwhile, Sovanny said she was in favor of Gingrich, namely for his years of experience, but she followed by saying she was still open to Paul. Her nearly split-decision was partly based on Gingrich’s fiery response about his marriage Jan. 19 during a presidential debate. Sovanny was not impressed, despite the fact Gingrich received a standing ovation at the hall in South Carolina. “You’re supposed to be a figure of power and prominence,” she said of what she referred to as a defiant tone expressed by Gingrich. Erickson, who has served as House District 40A chair for years, said before the caucus that he was not particularly

fond of any of the four candidates, saying each one has his flaws. But, this did not deter him from sharing who planned to vote for in the straw poll. “I am thinking a little about Santorum,” he said, “but I probably – here at the caucus – will vote for Newt.” Erickson further stated that Gingrich was experienced at the federal level and a pure debater. “I think he debates very well and would be able to give [President Barack] Obama a run for his money.” Both the Paul and Gingrich supporters said they were very surprised to see Santorum get 18 of 45 votes. “But it’s a good surprise,” Rasmussen said. And when asked if he was surprised, Erickson said. “Certainly. I thought Romney would walk away with it.” Erickson said he thought that Santorum’s appeal was due to a religious element, but he was quick to say he was not definitely sure of this assessment. “I’m not sure what it was,” he said, adding he would be sticking with Newt. Fellow Burnsville resident Jim Luckman said his support was for Santorum because of his family values, his calm demeanor, and the directness while speaking as a candidate.

PUBLIC SAFETY Lakeville fire report, scald injury prevention tips and information From Jan. 30 to Feb. 5, members of the Lakeville Fire Department responded to 11 calls for service: one gas leak, two motor vehicle accidents (with injuries), four false alarms and four good intents. Fire Prevention Tip The severity of a scald injury depends on the temperature to which the skin is exposed and how long it is exposed. The most common regulatory standard for the maximum temperature of water delivered by residential water heaters to the tap is 120 degrees Fahrenheit (48 degrees Celsius). At this temperature, the skin of adults requires an average of five minutes of exposure for a full thickness burn to occur. When the temperature of a hot liquid is increased to 140 Fahrenheit (60 Celsius) it takes only five seconds or less for a serious burn to occur. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and other hot beverages are usually served at 160 to 180 Fahrenheit (71-82 Celsius), resulting in almost instantaneous burns that will require surgery. Since immediate

removal of the hot liquid from the skin may lessen severity, splash and spill burns may not be as deep as burns suffered in a bathtub. See the American Burn Association website for more information: ameriburn.org.

Lakeville criminal draws unwanted attention, citation Contrary to what some citizens mght think, people who are engaged in illegal activity often draw attention to themselves and subsequently attract the attention of the police as in one case. Lakeville police Officer Rick Hakanson responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle driving around a residential neighborhood one night recently. A short time after arriving in the neighborhood, Hakanson located the suspicious vehicle and stopped to investigate the vehicle and driver. He learned that the driver was in possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Hakanson seized the contraband and cited the driver for the violations.

Simple is the new rich Boomers should spend more time sitting on the porch BY EMILY HEDGES – CONTRIBUTING WRITER When Ron Timm of Minnetonka gives seminars on how to live simply, he frequently refers to the concept of “empty porches.” He challenges his students to drive down Summit Avenue in St. Paul, or around Lake Minnetonka when it’s beautiful outside and see if anyone is

SENIOR

using their porch. “They’re never sitting out there because they are always working,” he said. “Boomers, especially, are finding that they’re working during the years they expected to be sitting on the porch.” Twenty-two years ago, Timm was one of those executives working long hours with an expensive home on the lake that he never had time to enjoy. That is, until the day he thought he was having a heart attack. Come to find out, he was okay, but the experience left its mark. “When I thought I had a heart attack I started thinking about what is important,” he said. “When you’re on your death bed, no one is going to say, ‘I wish

LIVING AT ITS BEST!

I’d spent another four or five hours every week at the office.’” From that moment on, he wanted to do something different with his life. He started by going back to graduate school, and ended up writing his doctoral dissertation on Exit Strategies from Corporate America Using Voluntary Simplicity Principals. Timm not only read a couple hundred contemporary books on the subject, but also relied on the writing of philosophers hundreds of years old. “Philosophers call it voluntary simplicity,” he said. “It’s about living below your means. It gives you time to enjoy the things that are meaningful.”

Timm left his job and opened his own graphic arts business. After 15 years, he decided to close the doors and pursue two passions, photography and teaching. Since then, he has helped support his family with his photographs, and teaching photography at the college, community education and through oneon-one instruction as a photo coach. He also wanted to spend his life helping others find peace of mind and a better quality of life through reducing expenses. His course, “Living Better on Less” is now offered in communities all over the metro area.

Assessing your life Better communication can pay dividends

“The biggest gift Kolbe gives is to tell you where you fit in. It can also help a Boomer figure out ‘what’s your

Financial advisor uses Kolbe Index to help learn how clients think

next career?’” Steve Lear

BY EMILY HEDGES – CONTRIBUTING WRITER Whether Kevin Riley, CFO of AdvisorNet Financial, is working with his company’s stable of financial advisors, or coaching junior hockey, he understands that communication is everything. That’s why taking the Kolbe Index more than two years ago was a turning point for him personally, and an opportunity to share this key to success with others. Riley, a resident of Rosemount, learned about the Kolbe Index from Steve Lear of Affiance Financial out of St. Louis Park. “He was starting this Kolbe project and wanted to partner with us,” Riley said. Together, their two companies formed the AdvisorNet Financial Wisdom program, which is offered to more than 250 advisors Riley’s company supports. “Understanding how your clients think and how they make decisions helps you make better decisions as their financial advisor,” he said. The 36-question assessment reveals the way people operate in four areas: Fact Finding (the way you gather information), Follow Thru (how you arrange and design your environment); Quick

Kevin Riley, CFO of AdvisorNet Financial, teaches financial advisors how to communicate with Boomers. (Photo by Paul Groessel - Sun Newspapers) Start (the way you deal with risk); and Implementer (the way you handle space and tangibles). After taking the test, the experts at Affiance Financial walk the client through results that are displayed on a four-color chart with numerical values plotting their location on a spectrum in each of the four areas. According to Lear, Kolbe isn’t about cognition, intelligence, personality, or values. “There are other types of tests for that. The Kolbe Index is about how people take action; if they were free to be themselves, how would they do something.”

Because Boomers make up the largest segment of clients for the financial advisors that Riley works with, how Kolbe can help people in this age bracket was a key question in developing the program. “As a financial advisor you want to learn how to communicate with those individuals (Boomers).” Riley believes that if a financial advisor can do that more effectively, they will be much more likely to succeed in helping Boomers stretch their money through retirement. Riley points out that he’s encountered other examples of how Kolbe can help this age group. “If someone tests as a

Quick Start, and they have never started a company, they may say, ‘Wow, maybe there’s something out there I should be doing differently,’” he said. “If they’re a Fact Finder, they might discover they haven’t been in the right job their whole life.” Lear counsels Boomers daily who are contemplating a longer working life for all sorts of reasons. “For Boomers, we can help if they need to work, or want to work for their health and sense of purpose. The biggest gift Kolbe gives is to tell you where you fit in. It can also help a Boomer figure out ‘what’s your next career?’” For a vast majority of people taking the Kolbe Index, Lear believes the results reinforce many things about them they already know. “But it provides them with the verbs to describe themselves to others, and this increases confidence. All of a sudden, you have language to describe yourself that is what we’ve been missing.”

Ron Timm of Minnetonka thought he was having a heart attack. That served as a wake-up call for him to pursue a new lifestyle that emphasizes simplicity.

“It’s inspirational to teach the course,” said Timm. “I hear lots of interesting stories from people who were about to retire and now can’t afford to, or who lost their jobs, or just decided they had to cut back.” Timm recalls a corporate attorney friend who decided to leave her job for greater peace of mind. “When she sold her house and bought a less expensive one, the bank was suspicious because no one bought a less expensive house. But it permitted her to change her career and get into a different business

that she was passionate about.” Another student, a 25-year-old woman, already knew she didn’t want to be an undertaker for the rest of her life. She took Timm’s course to figure out how to transition into another line of work. Timm points out to his students all of the options that become possible in life if you reduce the amount you need to live on. “Maybe you work four days a week instead of five, change fields or it gives you more time to go back to school or maybe even retire.” While all ages regularly attend Timm’s seminars, it’s Boomers that come most often.

Simple ... From page 20 “Right now is a perfect storm for Baby Boomers, with jobs, home prices, the stock market and dwindling 401Ks such as they are,” he said. “Boomers are getting older and must start thinking about how to reduce their spending if they want to retire.” Timm points out to Boomers that after retirement they will still require 70-percent of pre-retirement income, which can be a problem for many. His seminar offers practical advice on how to reduce your monthly out-go, and each student receives his 20-page handout with tips on how to live below your means, from saving money on housing,

food, entertainment and travel to ways to get out of credit card debt. So whether the simple living strategies are voluntary or born of necessity, Timm believes they are the key to having a life that is, “outwardly simple and inwardly rich.” He no longer works in an office, and he no longer lives in a lake house. Instead, he and his wife live in a less expensive but lovely home in Minnetonka and rent out the downstairs to live for next to nothing. Hanging on his wall is one of his favorite photographs, two Adirondack chairs with a window box full of blossoms behind them. For Timm that picture embodies the philosophies he shares with the world: voluntary simplicity, live below your means, make time to sit out on the porch. Kolbe Index ... From page 19 After seeing the benefits of Kolbe for his financial advisors and their clients, Riley soon saw the potential for his own company. “We brought it into the client experience, but then we thought, ‘Gosh, this would be kind of neat to do with our staff.” For Riley personally, the results of his Kolbe assessment didn’t really surprise him. “Even though I considered myself a less-typical accountant, I’m still very fact-based, very black-andwhite in my decision making,” he said. But the communication strategies suggested by the results Riley has taken to heart.

“Young or old, everybody has a different way to communicate,” he said. “Kolbe helps you look at individuals, even kids, and nail down how you think they might test out on Kolbe.” Riley can see traits developing in the 14- to 16-year-olds that he coaches. “You can see them already starting down that line. Are they Fact Finders? If they are Quick Starts, maybe that’s why they have a short attention span,” he said. “In the last two years since I took the test, it’s been really helpful in all areas of my life.” Affiance Financial will host a free workshop on the second floor of the Metropoint Tower located at 600 Hwy.169 South on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. Space is limited to 50 people. Anyone interested in attending should email penne.swenson@affiancefinancial.com.

crew traveled to the small western Massachusetts town to carry out their duties. Rodney said that he figured it would take until February 2012 for his company to complete all of the cleanup in Longmeadow. “We were done right before Christmas, so we still had rent paid on this home,” Rodney said of a home rented in Enfield, Conn., for use during the project. “We had the equipment, so I figured that we could start helping people out here a little bit.” Before making the journey to Longmeadow, Perfect Landscape was assisting in recovery efforts following a fall 2011 storm that had hit North Carolina. “We went to work for the hurricane that hit in North Carolina. We worked in Grantsboro, N.C.,” Randy said. “Then all of a sudden, we finished up there and the ice storm happened in Longmeadow, so we came up here … and started cleaning up the ice storm for FEMA.” But Perfect Landscape’s contract with FEMA expired Dec. 20, when the company completed its job. company and its crew have been helping one resident after another – including Andrea Chase, for whom Perfect Landscape performed $3,500 worth of cleanup at no cost. According to Rodney, Perfect Landscape finished the streets quickly for Longmeadow. And soon after, the Konkols noticed a home on Wolf Swamp Road in Longmeadow. Rodney spoke of one house in particular – that of Chase. He noticed that no work had been performed after driving by the home on several occasions. “What I did then is I went and knocked on her door. She said that she just couldn’t afford it,” Rodney said. “I said, ‘Well, I’ll do it for free – to help you out.’” After this, word spread in the community of around 15,500 people. Perfect Landscape was in town and helping people without exploiting a disaster situation for monetary gain. “If that is what he wanted to do, I wouldn’t be doing this for him,” said Bill Borchers, who is an independent consultant from the area. A newspaper report at the time said the area had been hit with more than a foot of snow, and this left more than 700,000 people without any power. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick soon declared a state of emergency and authorized the deployment of 7,000 of the state’s National Guard to assist in cleanup. “There were a lot of large branches that came down, large limbs, in some cases onto people’s homes,” Borchers said. “There are still a large number of hazardous, hanging limbs. What [Perfect Landscape] is doing, and I’m helping them do, is go around and remove some of these hazards.” Konkol’s good deed of helping Chase in a time of need did not go unnoticed. “I was walking down the street … and a woman looked at me and asked, ‘Are you the guy that was on the news? I said yes, and she said, ‘You know what? There should be more guys like you,’” Rodney said. Rodney added that the woman handed him a $100 bill for the work Perfect Landscape has been performing for Longmeadow residents.

Ever humble, Rodney simply said that it’s a hard time for everybody and that sometimes people have hard times. “Sometimes people need a little help,” he said. “What I always say – what goes around comes around” Borchers is from the western Massachusetts area. He said situations like this often bring out a bad element. “We have local tree services around here. Some of them are not competitive in what they are offering, as you would have with any type of disaster like that,” he said. “You have people seize a point to take advantage of people if they can, and that is not what [Rodney] is doing.” Rodney said he expects his crew to be in the Longmeadow area through March, after which time the crew will head to Alabama to help in a cleanup effort after tornados hit the state in the latter part of January. “I’m so overwhelmed,” Rodney said of the residents of Longmeadow. “There is so much work over here … that these people are asking me to stay.” According to Rodney, he informed FEMA officials that “they are not ready for me in Alabama yet, so we are going to stay as long as we can stay.”

SECTION HOCKEY FINAL Lakeville North and Lakeville South will play for the Section 1AA girls hockey championship at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Owatonna. Lakeville South won the section championship in 2009 and 2011, while Lakeville North was the champion in 2010.

Burnsville skier Toni Carlstrom, shown competing at the Buck Hill Invitational in January, finished 52nd at the Section 6 girls Alpine skiing meet. She was Burnsville’s No. 5 skier, but her finish was critical in the Blaze winning a tiebreaker with Lakeville South for a state meet berth.

“Based on their scores, we thought Jefferson was the favorite” in the section, Abrahamson said. “But then we said, ‘OK, if all our girls step up, ski their best and have clean runs, it could be enough’” to get Burnsville to state. Unlike some other teams in its section, Burnsville’s girls have nobody who competes in U.S. Ski Association meets on the weekends. That means the Blaze has to rely on consistency over star power. “There are some really good teams in our section,” Abrahamson said. “But when we see Burnsville, Burnsville, Burnsville on the results sheet, finishing together, it moves us up and pushes other teams down.” Burnsville probably won’t go into the state meet as one of the favorites, and that will help the Blaze keep their goals modest. “The first time I was there, I straddled [a gate],” said Drusch, who qualified for the 2010 state meet as an eighthgrader. “So personally, the priority is to have two good runs.” Abrahamson’s goal for the team is even simpler.

Lakeville North’s Ben Saxton just wants to do his best and enjoy the ride. If that ride takes him to another state Nordic title and beyond, even better. The defending state Nordic champion will get the chance to defend the title after winning Section 1 on Tuesday at Trollhaugen in Dresser, Wis. His focus wasn’t so much on speed as it was on relaxing. “It was a very interesting race,” he said. “I just focused on staying at ease. Not slower, just calm and collected. There’s always things to work on with technique. Doing any athletic motion when you’re uptight is inefficient. I was in an opportunity where I could experiment working on stuff like that. I still skied a crazy fast race.” As the top-ranked high school skier in the state, Saxton is favored to win the title again on Feb. 16 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. “Last year was awesome,” Saxton said. “It was the result of a lot of hard work. I’m not thinking of defending it. I just want to have the best race I can have and if I work my butt off and if I give it my all, I’ll be happy. I’ve gotten stronger and fitter, but so have my friends I’ll be going up against.” He also won the South Suburban Conference championship earlier this month and won several other races, but winning high school races isn’t the only thing on Saxton’s mind this winter. He leaves on Feb. 26 for Utah for the U.S. Junior Nationals in early March. Then it’s off to Oslo, Norway, for the Norway Junior Nationals.

Burnsville girls ski to state by slimmest of margins Blaze wins tiebreaker for second place in Section 6 Alpine meet BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Nervous skiers, coaches and parents gathered in front of the restaurant at Buck Hill to find out who was going to the state meet and who wasn’t. They knew the Section 6 girls team competition would be close. What they couldn’t have known was how close. Five points separated the first- and fourth-place teams at the Feb. 7 section meet. Bloomington Jefferson took the title by four points, which was a wide margin compared to what came next. Burnsville and Lakeville South tied for second place, with Lakeville North fourth, one point back of the Blaze and Cougars. Because only two teams advance to the state meet, the Burnsville-Lakeville South tie had to be broken by the No. 5 skiers on each team. Toni Carlstrom’s 52nd-place finish proved to be big for Burnsville because it was 12 places bet-

ter than South’s No. 5 skier. And with that, the Blaze girls earned a spot in the state meet, which was Feb. 15 at Giants Ridge (the state meet took place after this edition went to press). “We have five girls who can score points for us,” said Burnsville coach Luke Abrahamson. “And if we needed a sixth, we’d be fine.” Lizzie Drusch (fourth, 50.46 seconds), Erica Lindsay (19th, 54.18), Laura Garbe (26th, 55.86) and Maddie Roberts (31st, 58.01) were the top four skiers that counted toward Burnsville’s team total. Carlstrom’s time, which proved to be critical, was 1:01.36. Michelle Kourthauer was 62nd overall in 1:03.53. While Burnsville’s state meet appearance might be considered an upset, members of the Blaze said they sensed something was brewing. “I kind of hoped we’d have a chance,” Drusch said. “We needed everybody to stand, and everybody did.” Abrahamson said Bloomington Jefferson appeared to separate itself – albeit slightly – from the competition in the South Suburban Conference. But, he added, he saw an opportunity for Burnsville in the Section 6 meet, if the Blaze could seize it.

Kloos still picking up points in bunches Lakeville South senior and Mr. Hockey finalist leads Class AA in scoring again BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Justin Kloos has the statistics. He has the scholarship in his back pocket. Next month, he might be named the state’s Mr. Hockey. But he really would like to play in the state tournament before his high school hockey career ends. Kloos, the leading scorer in Class AA last season and again this year, has never had a chance to perform on that stage. For Kloos and his Lakeville South teammates, the state tournament can be a sore subject. The last two years the Cougars were heavily favored going into the Section 1AA championship game but lost to Lakeville North, their neighboring rival. South is 15-8 after defeating Lakeville North 4-2 and Apple Valley 3-0 in South Suburban Conference games last week. The Cougars were ranked 13th in Class AA. “This is going to be my third try at it,” Kloos, a senior center, said of the Cougars’ state tournament bid. “Right now we’re playing well in our D-zone, and that’s going to be important in the playoffs.

“We’re bummed that we’ve lost four or five games by one goal to top-10 teams. That’s been a little frustrating. But we know if we can get to the state tournament we can play with those teams.” Lakeville North is 11-12, but the Panthers figure to be contenders in the Section 1AA playoffs that start next week. The Lakeville teams split two regular-season games, with each winning on the other’s home ice. Rochester Century, 16-5-1 in its first 22 games, also could be in the mix in the section. But Century has lost non-conference games to both Lakeville schools. Kloos had a goal and two assists in each of South’s victories last week. Through 23 games he had 75 points (31 goals, 44 assists). He has had six five-point games this season and could still surpass the 90 points he scored in 2010-11 if the Cougars go on a deep playoff run. Kloos scored 55 points as a sophomore, skating with Alex Harvey and Kyle Osterberg on what became known as the “Penguin Line.” Osterberg left after that season to join the U.S. National Team Development Program, but Kloos and Harvey have remained together. Harvey has 53 points (23 goals, 30 assists) this season. Sophomore Patrick Lauderdale skates with Kloos and Harvey and has 30 points on 15 goals and 15 assists. Last week Kloos was one of three South Suburban Conference players

Lakeville South senior Justin Kloos is the leading scorer in Class AA boys hockey. The University of Minnesota recruit has helped lead the Cougars to a 15-8 record. (Photo by Mike Shaughnessy – Sun Newspapers) (Eagan’s Michael Zajac and Will Merchant were the others) named finalists for the Mr. Hockey award. In addition to being a dangerous scorer, Kloos has long been lauded for his hockey I.Q. and playmaking skills. That type of player generally loves it when he has more room to work, so it’s not a surprise that Kloos signed with a college team that plays on a big sheet of ice. He

plans to play at the University of Minnesota, which has its home games on the extra-wide Mariucci Arena rink. “I love the big ice. I think it benefits all the little guys like me,” said Kloos, who’s 5-foot-9, 170 pounds. Once the Gophers offered him a scholarship, that pretty much ended the recruitment process. He verbally committed to Minnesota in April 2011. “Everybody says they’re looking for the best fit,” Kloos said. “But I knew if the Gophers gave me a chance I’d choose them.” Still to be decided is if he will join the Gophers next season or play a year of Junior A hockey first. Kloos said he’s open to either possibility. First, however, is the section tournament and another possible showdown with Lakeville North. Lakeville South coach Kurt Weber said it can be tough for his team to play Lakeville North because the emotion of the rivalry can detract from the players’ focus. He said he thought that was the case in the Cougars’ Feb. 9 victory at North. “I didn’t think we played well,” Weber said. “But we found a way to win the game anyway, and that’s important.” When the Cougars and Panthers play, “it doesn’t seem to matter what the records are,” Kloos said. “It’s who makes plays at the right time – and who gets breaks.”

Panthers pull out a victory in final seconds Eastview boys hoops team loses for first time this season BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY SUN NEWSPAPERS When Lakeville North drew up its play for a potential game-winning shot, Grant Erickson wasn’t the first option. He probably wasn’t the second, third or fourth option, either. But the Panthers needed him to make a play, and the junior guard didn’t flinch. Erickson scored on a drive to the basket – his only points of the game – with 2.7 seconds remaining in North’s 57-56 victory at Eastview on Feb. 10 in a game that matched the No. 1- and No. 3-ranked boys basketball teams in Class 4A. “I think [Eastview] expected me to

pass the whole time,” said Erickson, who averages 3.8 points a game for the 19-1 Panthers. “We were going to try to get it to Tyler Flack, but they wouldn’t let him get open. The lane opened up, and I took it.” Eastview, No. 1 in the Minnesota Basketball News state Class 4A rankings for seven consecutive weeks, lost for the first time this season. The Lightning (191) led by five points with 1:38 to play but couldn’t hold on. Eastview had been the last remaining undefeated team in Class 4A. The Panthers’ victory also pulled them into a tie with Eastview for first place in the South Suburban Conference at 11-1. Apple Valley was one game behind the co-leaders and played at Eastview on Feb. 14, after this edition went to press. “We told our kids if we were going to have any chance to win the conference

we had to do it ourselves,” said North coach John Oxton, who also celebrated his 400th career victory. “We’ve got some prideful kids and some tough kids. So does Eastview. These are two very good high school teams.” On the game-winning play, Oxton said Eastview overplayed Lakeville North’s top offensive players to the point where taking the ball to the basket was Erickson’s best option. “So he just beat a guy one-on-one, which is not easy because their No. 4 [Eastview’s Darin Haugh, who guarded Erickson]is one of the best defensive players in the conference,” Oxton said. Flack and senior forward Brett Rasmussen scored 12 points each to lead North. Ryan Saarela had 11 points and made perhaps the game’s biggest defensive play by forcing a dual possession with 20.2 seconds remaining and the arrow pointing North’s way.

Senior forward Joey King had 18 points for Eastview despite having his playing time curtailed because of foul trouble. Chris Narum added 11 points and Haugh scored eight. Lakeville North’s only loss was 54-48 to Eastview on Jan. 10. The past several years, Lakeville North and Eastview have been in the same playoff section. This year, however, North was moved back to Class 4A, Section 1, while Eastview remained in Section 3. Therefore, a tiebreaking game between the teams couldn’t happen before the state tournament. If it does take place, Oxton said he knows his players won’t be overwhelmed by the situation. “What I like about this team is it doesn’t have that deer-in-the-headlights thing going,” he said. “They’re all-conference athletes, and they’ve been battle-tested.”

Nordic FROM PAGE 25 “It’s the most hallowed ski arena,” Saxton said. “From what I’ve been told it wouldn’t be out of the question to have 10,000 people show up.” Saxton has skied in large events before. He was in Maine earlier this year for the U.S. Senior Nationals where he had a shot at qualifying for the U.S. Ski Team. “It was a good experience to race at a high level,” he said. “I had a couple gaffes here and there, but overall it was a fantastic week. I just missed the junior team, which was my goal, but sometimes stuff doesn’t fall your way. “I’ll have one more shot, but that’s a lot of people’s goal to get there. It’s just one part of my goal to ski at the World Cup and make the U.S. Olympic team.” Saxton isn’t the only skier from Lakeville North with plans of striding well at state. Lewis Kunik finished second at the section meet behind Saxton. “I don’t mind losing to Ben at all,” Kunik said. “He’s been my teammate since middle school days. It felt good. I progressively moved up every year. This was a nice way to end it after five years. ” He’d like to get all-state honors, but like Saxton, his anxiety level is low. “No matter what happens, I just have fun with it,” Kunik said. “Skiing is something I do for fun. I love watching my teammates enjoy it and I enjoy it a lot.” The Lakeville bus to the state meet will be filled with a few other members from the girls team. Amy Ferguson finished second in the section. Her teammate, Sara Nelson, will join her after finishing seventh. “Our team really pushed it out there,”

Alpine FROM PAGE 25 “Just go and have fun,” he said. “Going to the state meet is a great accomplishment. It should be fun.”

Other girls results Lakeville South junior Amanda Larson placed sixth individually in 50.83 at the Section 6 meet and will return to state. She was 33rd in the 2011 state meet. Lakeville North’s Briar Smith took 12th overall in 52.31. The top 10 individuals who are not on one of the two statequalifying teams also advance to state. Apple Valley was eighth in the girls team standings, with Claire Hefke and Marta Iseite finishing 22nd and 23rd. Cassie Torbenson was 45th individually for Eastview, which was 12th in the team competition.

Ferguson said. “We made the best of this season. I’m hoping to be all-state, I just have another hard week of practice.” With the lack of snow, the Lakeville teams have been cross training. “I thought it was going to be a lot different not being able to ski every day, but I think it’s helped us out a lot being in the weight room every day,” Ferguson said. “We’ve gotten a lot stronger and it’s helped us out more than I think we thought it would.” Two girls from South will join them. Maggie Singer placed third and Caraline Slattery was 10th. From the boys team, Michael Picken qualified. The Panther girls qualified as a team last season, but fell seven points short of that goal this year. Winona won the meet with North second and South in third. In Section 3 at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis, Burnsville’s Mike Johnson qualified for state after finishing fifth overall.

Girls Nordic Burnsville has given Minnesota several quality skiers to represent the school at state and 2012 was no different. Vivian Hett won the South Suburban Conference title as well as the Section 3 title on Tuesday. She finished 11th last season as a freshman at state. She will bring her entire team with her this time around. Thanks to Jordan Horner’s fifth place and Tori Felton’s eighth place finish along with Krista Bain, Jane Koch, Kjerstin Narvesen and Johanna Weber, the Blaze won the Section 3 title a few days after winning the South Suburban Conference title. Burnsville junior Tom Flickinger qualified for state individually after finishing 11th overall in 49.42. Also qualifying individually was Lakeville North’s Connor Croasdale, who finished fourth in 47.72. He led the Panthers to seventh in the team competition. Chad Serba was Apple Valley’s top finisher in 35th place. The Eagles were 11th in the team standings. Travis O’Brien finished 31st overall to lead Lakeville South to 12th place.
