Lakeville attorney recognized for excellence in practice Kosieradzki selected, listed in ‘Super Lawyers’ magazine BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS His opponents and peers in and out of the courtroom respect him, but those footing the bill for his winning verdicts fear him. Lakeville-based attorney Art Kosieradzki has been selected by “Super Lawyers” magazine for recognition in 2011. Only 5 percent of lawyers in the state of Minnesota are named to this list each year. Kosieradzki is a partner at Sieben, Grose, Von Holtum & Carey in Lakeville, where he manages the location. “Super Lawyers” is a listing of outstanding lawyers Weekly from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a Super Savings! of peer recognition and professional high degree achievement. It is published as a special supplement in several publications including Super Lawyers. He sits on the Million Dollar Roundtable, a recognition given only to lawyers who have won million-dollar-plus verdicts, and the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, a national merit organization consisting of Weekly Super Savings! about 700 of the nation’s most accomplished attorneys. Given his record of winning large-figured verdicts might cause some to believe his work is all about money, but hearing him talk about his involvement in the lives of those he is helping legally could leave one with an entirely different impression. Not only are we here to help with legal issues, we are here to be your friend.” Recalling one of his most intriguing cases, Kosieradzki commented on a case that was adjudicated years ago from an incident in Lakeville. An individual was proceeding through a drivethrough of a fast-food restaurant when the vehicle

It was at this moment that the longtime litigator chose to put the process into perspective for this one Lakeville family, at least from his side of the aisle. “If you can take some of the financial stresses out of someone’s life, they can focus on other issues,” he said. “Is money going to get his life back? No, but it will make life easier.” “Super Lawyers” selects attorneys

using a rigorous, multiphase process. “The selection process is multiphased and is designed to find indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement,” said Cindy Larson, research and editorial director for “Super Lawyers” magazine. “The three primary phases of the selection process are the creation of the candidate pool, independent research, and the Blue Ribbon Panel.” Larson continued, saying that officials with the magazine invite a select number of attorneys to participate on the BRP. “As part of this process, the BRP provides us with additional peer evaluations of the attorneys in the candidate pool by primary area of practice,” Larson said. “Super Lawyers conducts additional fact checking by confirming that the attorneys are in good standing. Finally the candidate pool is divided into tiers so there is representation on the list from all firm sizes.” The most rewarding part of his job, according to Kosieradzki, is seeing the benefits of many months of successful work. “[It is] helping see people get their lives back on track. Injury happens,” he said. “You have to accept it. You have to move on. You have a life to live.”

BV school staffers helping refugee family start new life Providing donated goods and services BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Many of the simplest luxuries in life aren’t always so simple – especially if it’s the first time you have ever experienced them. This has been the situation for one refugee family that arrived in the U.S. this past June, according to one teacher from Vista View Elementary School in Burnsville. Jennifer Bordonaro with about 20 others employed at Vista View in one capacity or another is co-sponsoring a refugee family through the Minnesota Council of Churches. The co-sponsorship is a threemonth commitment that continues through September and is designed to assist brand new families in establishing roots in their new country. Bordonaro, who has led this collective effort from the beginning, comes from a family and work background that has provided her exposure in this area, but not to this extent. “My dad, being a minister, has always

worked with immigrant groups,” she said. “This year, I had a refugee student in my class. She came in speaking no English, and everything in America was brand new to her.” In a more recent conversation with her father, Bordonaro was referred to the Minnesota Council of Churches, a group of churches representing different denominations. “I originally was going to do an individual volunteer opportunity,” Bordonaro said. “I went in to learn at the [MCC] Minneapolis office where I learned about co-sponsoring.” Bordonaro met with Kristin Zoellner, resource coordinator for MCC, at the end of May to discuss how Bordonaro’s group of volunteers could function and help a refugee family. “[Zoellner] actually had a family in mind when I met with her that day,” Bordonaro said. “It all moved really quickly.” Since then, the group has collected donations to furnish an apartment for the family. On their own time, they cleaned the place, moved in furniture, stocked the STAFFERS: TO PAGE 5

Staffers FROM PAGE 3 kitchen cupboards, started a book collection for the preschooler, made the beds and filled in every single detail of the apartment. “We’ve done a lot of teaching how to use items in their apartment,” Bordonaro said, referring to common household items. “We got them a TV and DVD player, donated by members co-sponsoring the family.” Heather Avery is among the group of co-sponsors and said the experience has been far from the norm. “I helped collect items to donate to the family. It’s pretty eye-opening, and it’s pretty humbling,” Avery said. “I guess it’s just knowing where they came from and what they went through. It’s rewarding to help a family make a better life for themselves.” The family they are sponsoring includes a couple, their preschool child and the wife’s father. They are Karen, which is the largest ethnic minority group in Burma, and have spent the past 16 years in a refugee camp in Thailand as the Burmese government has driven the Karen out of the country, according to Bordonaro. “They were exhausted and obviously

overwhelmed when they landed but they perked up when they arrived at their apartment and realized it was their new home,” she said. “The little girl found a tricycle that was donated for her and entered the room with a new stuffed animal every few minutes.” During the commitment, Vista View staffers are taking turns visiting the family and providing transportation to appointments. They are teaching the family how to use the bus, go grocery shopping, fill out job applications, and enroll in adult English as a Second Language classes. “Jennifer’s group has really been doing a terrific job,” Zoellner said, adding that it is the first time MCC has worked with a group of teachers. “They really understand the idea of teaching people skills and releasing them to do it on their own.” Zoellner added that every refugee her organization settles has met international guidelines. “They have met the United Nation’s definition of a refugee,” she said. She further described this as one who has fled his or her country and can’t return for fear of persecution based on race, religion, ethnicity, membership in a social group and even political opinion. “There are about 15 million who meet that definition and are registered as refugees,” Zoellner said. “Only about half of 1 percent gets to resettle every year.”

A few thoughts on correcting errors in print Depending on where you are reading this, you may have seen a small box on the lower right-hand corner of this page in the last few weeks. You might not have noticed it, but I can assure you it was there, emblazoned with black letters spelling an ominous word to many journalists: “Correction.” Brrreeeggh. I just got the shivers. Nah, I’m kidding. We work in an industry that is ideally aimed at facts. And we like to get them right. No matter what. There is a school of thought in the media community that says you shouldn’t publish correc-

tions unless absolutely necessary to avoid hurting the publication’s credibility. The idea is that by pointing out the mistakes, readers will see how often you’re getting things wrong and stop reading your paper. So why do we publish corrections? Why do we go out of our way to point out our inaccuracies? Because we don’t

believe printing corrections diminishes our credibility, but rather enhances it. I am well aware that media hasn’t been seen in the best light in the last few decades. There still is that nasty persisting stereotype of the unethical reporter. In some newsrooms, the theme is “get the paper out,” not necessarily “get the paper out right.” Here at the Sun-Current, we aim higher. Let me be clear, we endeavor to get the facts right the first time. Frankly, I’m rather proud of the staff here; we don’t often get things wrong. But

Parents, students should be aware of toxins in school supplies It’s August, and that means it’s back-to-school season in stores across the state. Parents are stocking up on everything from notebooks and paper to pencils and sharpeners. In fact, Minnetonka Schools recently mailed out its annual school supply list. Parents assume that what they buy their kids for school is inherently safe. The truth is certain school supplies are dangerous. A new guide released recently, Back-to-School Guide to PVC-Free School Supplies, will help parents avoid products on their school list that are made from PVC – otherwise known as the “poison plastic.” Healthy Legacy, a Minnesota-based public health coalition, partnered with the Center for Health, Environment and Justice, to release the fourth-annual guide. The Back-to-School Guide, issued just in time for school shopping, is filled with

tips to help parents avoid supplies made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic. Many parents don’t realize that some of the products on their school’s supply list contain chemicals that put their child’s health and learning at risk. Fortunately, there are lots of alternatives that generally cost the same as the toxic choices. PVC contains dangerous chemical additives such as phthalates, lead, cadmium or organotins, which can be toxic to a child’s health. As a result, some of these chemicals, like phthalates, are building up in our bodies. Federal law has banned the use of phthalates in toys, but they are still per-

vasive in children’s school supplies. To the developing body of a child, even a small exposure to these toxic chemicals can be dangerous. A new 2011 study found PVC is the most widely used hazardous plastic in the world. This toxic plastic is being used in more forms than ever for kids, from lunchboxes to three-ring binders. From its manufacture to disposal, PVC releases hazardous chemicals like dioxins and phthalates that are harmful to children’s health. Chemicals released by the PVC lifecycle are linked to chronic diseases on the rise in children, including learning and developmental disabilities, asthma, obesity and cancer. Leaders in the medical community like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the President’s Cancer Panel have called for greater restriction of GUEST COLUMNIST: TO PAGE 8

when we do err, it’s simply irresponsible for us not to issue a correction. After all, the goal for any newspaper is to provide you, the reader, with factual information. When that information is wrong — something as small as an improperly labeled photo caption or as major as a misspelling of a name — it is our duty to provide you with the correct information as quickly as possible. We want to earn and maintain your trust. By pointing out where we’ve had issues, we hope you’ll see we value precision above all else.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Still good people out there To the editor: My whole life I have always thought about how precious and valuable people’s lives are. It has always angered me to hear of murders or car wrecks that take away such a valued thing. I was very intrigued by last week’s opinion story by Matt Hankey (“Bad choices harm more than you” July 21”). His story made me happy to know that there are other people out there who share the same feelings about life that I do. It also made me happy how he spread the word on how “we need to own our bad decisions and poor judgments.” His story made me realize that even in hard times, there are still good people out there. Get ready for All That Jazz BY HANNAH LUND - SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN Burnsville’s Nicollet Commons will get in the groove Aug. 20 for their free annual Art and All That Jazz Festival, a swinging tradition started eight years ago. According to Art and All That Jazz founder and President Dan Gustafson, the festival is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a free night out with friends and neighbors. Though returning jazzlovers may miss the opening ceremony, the typical day-long festival itself will continue, featuring local artists, musicians, and for the first time: jazz dancers. Along with the new featured artists and dancers, Art and All That Jazz will return with family festival favorites, such as the instrument petting zoo, where children can get up close to the music they hear, face-painting, and of course, the water effects available in Nicollet Commons. The festival will kick off at noon, with art exhibits featured throughout the afternoon, and dancers hitting the stage at 4:30 p.m. The instrument petting zoo will be open until 5 p.m., and the park is free all day.

All That Jazz Appearing for the first time at an Art and All That Jazz festival, the Twin Cities Ballet, in conjunction with Ballet Royale and Alesso’s Dance Spectrum will present a sampling of a variety of jazz dance styles in

Burnsville’s main theater in the plaza. Though Twin Cities Ballet is best known for their yearly rendition of “The Nutcracker,” Ballet Royale assistant art director and co-owner Rick Vogt hopes to expand their horizons and make jazz a Minnesota favorite. “Ballet is core vocabulary in dance, where you can branch out to other styles, such as jazz,” said Vogt. “We wanted to do something very different and feature another genre and style. Even if you don’t know jazz, you’ll like it.” The dancers will perform two approximately 20 minute shows. Along with showcasing previously performed pieces, such as the Scarecrow dance from their recent production of “The Wizard of Oz,” the group will collaborate under Vogt’s direction to do a rendition of “All That Jazz” in the style of Bob Fosse. “The audience should be excited to see something different,” Vogt said. “There won’t be any tutus, point shoes or long story lines in these numbers.” The first show will be at 4:30 p.m. with another one at 5:30 p.m. Attendance is free, and the building will be air-conditioned. The dances are appropriate for all ages.

Art Along with the afternoon-long craft fair and art show, Art and All That Jazz will feature North Minneapolis-based artist Steffany Schmit and her unconventional style.

Spectators young and old gathered to attended the 2010 Art and All That Jazz Festival at Nicollet Commons Park in Burnsville. This year’s festival will feature numerous artists working working with everything from crayons to musical instruments. (Sun-Current file photo) Though being what she would call a “casual consumer of jazz,” Schmit’s piece caught the judges’ attention with its vibrant colors and striking lines. To accomplish this, she turned to her favorite medium: crayon. “No one does crayon, which makes me a little more unique,” said Schmit. “It’s my favorite medium, because I love bright colors. It’s got that pop of sound that you usually find in jazz.” Schmit, a freelance illustrator, began using crayon once an art professor suggested it as an exercise to create bright colors. It’s stuck with her ever since and she hopes that her work will “pop” in other places as well. According to Schmit, the ultimate dream is to be a children’s book writer and illustrator, since she feels inspired

by literature. Luckily for Art and All That Jazz, the music blended well with her love of the written and spoken word. “All of the art forms blend together nicely,” Schmit said. “Jazz as a medium relates to imagery nicely. It makes for a beautiful marriage.” Schmit’s work and the festival will also have a beautiful marriage, thanks to her years inspired by the bright colors and bright music. The art fair will be from noon to 7 p.m., with booths set up along Nicollet Commons. For more information on Steffani Schmit, visit steffanyschmit.com JAZZ FESTIVAL: TO PAGE 9

Tips for avoiding toxic PVC school supplies • Avoid backpacks with shiny plastic designs as they often contain PVC and may contain lead • Use cloth lunchboxes or metal lunchboxes. Many lunchboxes are made of PVC, or coated with PVC on the inside. • Use cardboard, fabric-covered or polypropylene binders. Most three-ring binders are made of PVC. • Stick to plain metal paperclips. Colored paper clips are often coated with PVC. Something jazzy A jazz festival wouldn’t be called jazz if not for the music. To bring in the beats, Art and All That Jazz will feature five local musicians, four of which are new to the festival. According to Gustafson, each of the bands will bring something different to the festival. Mick Sterling and the Irresistables, the final band of the night, look forward to sharing their bluesy music with the community. “We’re not your typical band,” said Mick Sterling, lead singer of the Irresistables. “We try to make everything our own and turn songs around a bit.” The Irresistables, with their strong group vocals and energetic rhythm section, hope to bring the festival to an upbeat close. While sharing the joy of jazz, they also hope to gain support for a non-profit foundation to help those who cannot afford daily expenses. Listeners can contribute by buying a $1 wristband at the festival. For more information about their fundraiser, visit the30daysfoundation.org. Four of the five music groups are Art and All That Jazz newcomers. Among all these, The Jack Brass Band (founded in 1999) will be returning to the Twin Cities this year to share their lively New

Orleans sound. The band, which consists of between 6-9 members, looks forward to being in the fun-filled atmosphere again. “This [jazz] music is really alive, and gets you to feel and move,” said band member Mike Olander. “A lot of other musical styles require rigidity in how it is performed, with expectations of the same performance. We internalize the music, and let our emotions help tell the story of how we are feeling as we are playing.” The Jack Brass Band has played in various spots across the metro, all to share what they called “a music of the people.” With big New Orleans jazz instruments, such as a sousaphone, big drums and horns, the sound is lively, versatile and good for family fun. Olander and The Jack Brass Band hope that, though they’ve visited before, the audience will always hear something new. “We plan on coming in to have a good time, and offer a musical gumbo of our styles — a little bit for everyone that comes out,” Olander said. “We thrive off seeing an audience get into the music by clapping, dancing, or singing along with us. Even if you have something that’s troubling you when you arrive, we want people to forget their cares when we play and just enjoy the music.” The music can be enjoyed starting at noon with The Dakota Combo, and will go until 10 p.m. with Mick Sterling and the Irrestibles. Art and All That Jazz promises to be a fun-filled day for the family. For more information and show times, visit burnsvilleartjazz.com.

In-home tutoring is now available to BV, LV students Tutor Doctor provides one-on-one guidance BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Medical doctors may no longer make house calls as a regular part of their daily routine, but for one new tutoring company, it is their lifeblood. About a month ago, Prior Lake resident Kathy Bennett, with the assistance of her husband, Jason Cameron, opened a Tutor Doctor, an in-home, one-on-one tutoring service for students in Burnsville, Lakeville, Eagan, Apple Valley and other nearby communities. This new Tutor Doctor franchise is a family business. Cameron serves as its marketing director, as well as lending technological support. Their 23year-old son, Jason, assists with administrative work and events, while their 21-year-old daughter, Stacy, helps with the company website. “We provide in-home, one-on-one tutoring services for all ages and any

subject,” Bennett said. Bennett has more than 25 years of experience in the corporate airline industry, most recently managing large teams in airport operations and domestic revenue management. And prior to this, she acquired experience in marketing, sales and finance. She began looking into the endeavor this past May. Following some thought and consideration, she decided to pull the trigger and venture into the world of small-business ownership. “It was very scary because that’s all I’ve ever known, my career with the airline,” she said. “For me, I had to try something that would make a difference in my life and hopefully a difference in others.” Unlike traditional tutoring services that require parents to drive their children to yet another classroom, this service not only brings the tutoring to students’ homes, but it also provides students help with their exist-

Mature Lifestyles

Housing A special section on Senior Living

Reverse mortgages are one option to generate cash for seniors The National Council on Aging, in a comprehensive brochure called, “Use Your Home To Stay At Home,” offers extensive information on how to stay in your home as you age. The following information is excerpted from that brochure. To get the full copy, go to www.ncoa.org Many older Americans want to stay in their home as long as possible. However, as it gets harder to do things on your own, you may need a helping hand with everyday tasks. It can be costly to pay for help at home, along with home modifications and other health needs. For many people, these extra costs are a real burden. Older Americans often hold onto their home as a nest egg in case they need extra money. But when that “rainy day” arrives,

how do you tap the equity in your home? Some people may tell you to sell the house and move to assisted living or a nursing home. There is another option. If you’ve owned your house for many years, it could be worth a lot more than you paid to buy it. Home equity is the difference between the appraised value of your home and what you owe on any mortgages. A reverse mortgage can help you convert some of your home equity into cash and continue to live at home for as long as you want. Using the equity in your home can seem like a good idea. But is it right for you? It is a decision you should consider carefully, because the house may be your most valuable financial asset. Decide if staying at home is right for

lems get help in their own homes. Family or friends who give this help are called caregivers. When you get help at home, usually someone comes into your house from a home health agency. Professional services in your home can be expensive. Some service providers charge by the hour, while others charge for each home visit. While services in the home and community may cost less than in a nursing home, these expenses can add up over time. If you need a few hours of help from a home health aide in the morning and at night, you could spend $76 per day, or $2,280 per month. ~ Average national cost of services, 2010 ~ Homemaker: $18/hour ~ Home health aide: $19/hour ~ Adult day care: $60/day ~ Assisted living $3,185 per month ~ Nursing home: $185–$206/day (semi-private and private room) (Sources: Genworth Financial 2010 Cost of Care Survey)

Your House As A Resource Once you decide to continue living at home, the next step is to make sure that you have enough money to pay for the help you need. This section describes your choices for tapping home equity. Typically, you would take out a loan that uses your home as the collateral to guarantee that you will repay the loan.

Long-term solution— Reverse mortgage If you expect to live in your current home for several years, you could consider a reverse mortgage. Reverse mortgages are designed for homeowners age 62 and older. These types of loans are called “reverse” mortgages because the lender pays the homeowner. To qualify for this loan, you must live in the home as your main residence. Unlike conventional mortgages, there are no income requirements for these loans. You do not need to make any monthly payments for as long as you (or in the case of multiple homeowners, the last remaining borrower) continue to live in the home. When the last borrower moves out of the home or dies, the loan becomes due. Depending on the type of loan, borrowers may be able to receive payments as a lump sum, line of credit, fixed monthly payment for a specific period or for as long as they live in their homes, or a combination of payment options. The money you receive from a reverse mortgage is taxfree, and can be used for any purpose.

Advantages You (or your heirs) will never owe more than the value of the home if you sell the property to repay the loan, even if the value of your home declines. If your heirs choose to keep the home, they will need to pay off the full loan balance. You continue to own your house and can never be forced to leave, as long as you maintain the home and pay your property taxes and insurance.

Disadvantages Closing costs for a reverse mortgage (origination fee, mortgage insurance premium, appraisal and other up front costs), and the servicing fee can vary a lot by the type of HECM loan, and by lender. Closing costs can be financed into the loan. You may use up a large part of your home equity over time and have less to leave as an inheritance to your family.

Talk to your family It can be hard to discuss personal financial matters. However, good communication can bring a family together and reduce confusion. Talk with family or other heirs before taking out a loan. They will need to pay off the loan balance or repay Medicaid if they want to keep the house. Don’t rush into any decision. If you decide to take out a home loan, weigh all the options to find the best solution for you. Shop around with different lenders to check that the interest rate and fees are competitive and fair. Only sign papers that you understand. Ask questions if you are confused. Get help from a trusted family member or friend who understands financial matters. Agencies that offer reverse mortgage counseling can give you independent advice. The only time you need to act fast is if you decide you do not want the loan. Federal law gives you three days to get out of a reverse mortgage or home equity loan contract. You may cancel the loan for any reason, but you must do it in writing within three days.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) is committed to helping older persons to maximize all resources, public and private, so that they can be as independent as possible in the residence of their choice. For more information, visit www.ncoa.org

Housing

A special section on Senior Living

How to choose an assisted living home There are many choices in Minnesota when it comes to senior housing, particularly in the metropolitan area. Often, the first decision that must be made is location. Do I want to be in the city or a suburb? Is it more important to stay in my own neighborhood or to be closer to where my children live? How easy will it be to get to the places I want to go to, such as the mall or theater, or need to go to, such as my doctor? The answers often are made by keeping one thing in mind: why am I considering this lifestyle change? Like other lifestyles, it is a choice often based on both desires and needs. Among the options that Minnesotans have are market rate and federally subsidized apartments, some with assisted living services; adult foster care; board and

lodging; and non-certified boarding care homes. Some independent senior communities have private ownership, such as condos and “cottages,” but the majority are rental apartments that may either be independent housing or a place where you can “age in place.” In some cases, one campus will provide a choice of independent senior housing, assisted living and even nursing home care, designed to meet changing needs. Some housing settings offer specialized care for people experiencing memory loss. Once a location is identified, the “shopping” can begin. Nothing takes the place of a personal visit to a senior housing community, but you can save some initial steps if you have access to the Internet by doing some online shopping. Most senior com-

munities have web sites, but a good place to begin is the “Senior Care Connections” Web site (http://www.seniorcareconnections.com) offered by the Minnesota Health & Housing Alliance. It offers a “Lifestyle Assessment Tool” to help you answer some of the toughest questions you may have about making the decision to move. It describes the many housing options, the services — such as housekeeping and meals — that you may want, and it lists housing providers who have pledged to the Minnesota Health & Housing Alliance Housing-with-Services Code of Ethics, a voluntary program promoting standards of quality care and open communication. Other resources include The Minnesota Senior Federation and the Minnesota Board on Aging

The top five things you should know: • Find out what retirement communities are located in the area where you prefer to live. • Learn more about your options online through helpful Web sites. • Tour the property to see the size, condition and amenities offered. • Interview key staff, including marketing, dietary, housekeeping, security and transportation managers. • Find out what will be included in a contract for services and continuum of care.

Tutoring FROM PAGE 10 ing school curriculum while working one-on-one with an instructor. According to Cameron, Bennett goes to a family’s home and does an assessment based on the needs of the family and the student. “We do an assessment in reading, writing, spelling, and math to really find out what level the child is at,” Bennett said. Following the assessment, Bennett matches students with the most appropriate tutor available. “I hire them as independent contractors,” Bennett said. “Many are either certified teachers or have an

education background and considerable tutoring experience.” Cameron quickly added, “There is no charge for the initial consultation.” Bennett said she personally believes that education is extremely important for everyone and that tutoring is an investment in a child’s education and future as a whole. She continued by comparing the tutoring concept to that of a personal trainer, who aids an athlete in performing at his or her absolute best. “I look at this the same way,” she said. “The earlier you can correct a problem, the better.” “It’s increased confidence, study skills and interest in learning,” Cameron added. Though Bennett could not cite any empirical evidence of this, she did reference another indicator.

“[The company] literally has thousands upon thousands of testimonials,” she said. According to Bennett, this type of tutoring offered through Tutor Doctor is a means by which to fill gaps in the performance of students. She described it as a building block process, and if children are not knowledgeable in basic fundamentals, they are not going to perform as well at the next level. Tutor Doctor provides tutoring in all subjects for all ages and abilities, current schoolwork and homework, common entrance exam preparation, pre-school to college levels, English as a second language students, and ACT and SAT preparation. “We have room for special needs children as well,” Bennett said. Notebook: season of intrigue in high school sports

Lakeville South quarterback Mitchell Leidner, a University of Minnesota recruit, will lead the Cougars in what could be a wide-open South Suburban Conference football race. (Photo by Mike Shaughnessy • Sun Newspapers) BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY SUN NEWSPAPERS High school fall sports practices started Aug. 15, and with a new season, there’s new intrigue. Here’s a look at stories to watch in the South Suburban Conference in fall 2011:

Football: Can Rosemount repeat as conference champion, even though the Irish lost most of the starters from their 2010 state Class 5A runner-up team? If having a returning quarterback is a head start toward a successful season, then Lakeville South (Mitchell Leidner), Eastview (Ryan Reger)

and Lakeville North (Trey Heid) figure to be in good shape. Meanwhile, Burnsville will try to revive its program with new head coach Tyler Krebs, formerly assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Eastview. Boys soccer: All eyes remain on Apple Valley, winner of the

last two state Class AA championships and holder of a staterecord 47-game winning streak. The Eagles, however, will have an almost entirely new starting lineup. If Apple Valley can’t keep up its torrid pace, Eagan might finally have a chance to jump over the Eagles. The Wildcats

lost to Apple Valley in the Section 3AA final the last two years. Lakeville North has 14 returnees from a team that qualified for the state tournament last season and gave Apple Valley a scare in the semifinals. Girls soccer: Eagan, Bloomington Jefferson, Eastview and Apple Valley all graduated some key players. Lakeville South finished ninth in the South Suburban Conference last season yet still qualified for the state tournament. An under-the-radar team might be Burnsville, which figures to get some players from a Burnsville Fire Under-16 Premier team that won its division at the USA Cup. Volleyball: Lakeville North is defending state Class 3A champion but has since lost its coach (Milan Mader, who retired) and one of its top players (Taylr McNeil, who transferred to Eagan). But the Panthers still will be formidable with returnees Alyssa Goehner, Nicole Latzig and Abby Monson. Bloomington Jefferson gave North its toughest postseason match in the Section 3 finals last year and returns three all-conference players. Eagan could be resurgent with the addition of McNeil and the return of coach Kathy Gillen-Melville. Apple Valley returns all-conference player Maren Loe and three others who were honorable mention all-conference.

State amateur baseball Teams from Burnsville and Savage have advanced to the state Class B amateur baseball tournament beginning Saturday, Aug. 20. All of Saturday’s games will NOTEBOOK: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE be in Hutchinson. Burnsville plays the opening game against Moorhead at 11 a.m., with Savage playing Mankato at 1:30. The other two first-round games are Austin vs. Sauk Rapids at 5 p.m. and Miesville vs. Chaska at 7:30. Second-round games in the doubleelimination tournament will be Sunday, Aug. 21, in Brownton. The tourney continues Aug. 26-28 in Glencoe and Brownton, with the final scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, in Glencoe. The Burnsville and Savage teams have a number of players who formerly played for Burnsville High School. Both teams play in the Cannon Valley League. Burnsville went undefeated in three games in a Class B “super sectional” in Dundas last weekend, allowing only three runs. The Bobcats defeated Austin 3-2 in their opening game Aug. 12. A 3-0 victory over Prior Lake on Aug. 13 clinched Burnsville’s spot in the state tourney, and the Bobcats won the super sectional with a 4-1 victory over Austin in the final Aug. 14. Savage, which finished third in the 2010 Class B tourney, will be at state for the fourth consecutive year. After edging Blaine 1-0 in the opening round of a super sectional at Cold Spring, the Outlaws lost to Sauk Rapids 5-3 in the second round. Savage defeated defending state Class B champion Shakopee 3-2 in an elimination game Aug. 13, with the winner earning a spot in the state tourney. Sauk Rapids won the super section title with an 11-5 victory over Savage on Aug. 14.

Rosemount High School football players took to the field Aug. 15 for the first day of coach-supervised practices. The Irish are coming off a 13-1 season in 2010 in which they were South Suburban Conference and section champions. They reached the Prep Bowl before losing to Wayzata in the Class 5A championship game. (Photo by Mike Shaughnessy • Sun Newspapers)

Well-traveled players Two players from Lakeville recently competed in the 2011 Volleyball European Global Challenge Tournament last month in Pula, Croatia. Cassie Weaver, a 2010 graduate of Lakeville North High School, and Ellen Krueger, a 2010 Lakeville South graduate, were members of the Bring It USA team that was 6-1 in the 12-team international tourney.

Bring It USA had 10 players chosen from college volleyball teams from around the country. Weaver plays for Concordia University in St. Paul, winner of the last four NCAA Division II championships. Krueger plays for the University of North Dakota. The team trained for three days in Belgrade, Serbia, before the tournament. After the July 17-21 tourney, the team went sightseeing in Venice, Italy, before returning home.

Jacob Schlottke, a two-time state individual wrestling champion at Apple Valley High School, died of cancer Aug. 11 at his home in Albuquerque, N.M. Schlottke, 27, was an internet marketing entrepreneur. He graduated from AVHS in 2002. He earned a scholarship to Arizona State, but a knee injury ended his wrestling career. Schlottke then enrolled at the University of Minnesota to study business marketing. He qualified for the state high school tournament five times and won state championships in his junior (2001) and senior (2002) seasons. Schlottke won the Class 3A 140pound championship at the 2001 state tournament, completing a 44-2 season. The next year, he finished unbeaten (45-0) and won the state title at 152. He also helped Apple Valley win four state team championships while on varsity. He holds the state high school single-season record for takedowns with 446 in 2001-02. Schlottke also is second on the all-time list with 436 in 2000-01 and tied for eighth with 265 in 1999-2000. He is second in career takedowns with 1,342, trailing only Zach Sanders of WabashaKellogg. He was president of Pinnacle Internet Marketing and Matfish Wrestling Gear, an online retail wrestling store that later branched into mixed martial arts clothing and equipment. Schlottke also provided technical assistance for several wrestling websites, including thewrestlingtalk.com, where he served as chief operating officer. – Compiled by Mike Shaughnessy
