“What started with an idea to provide an additional learning environment for our students has grown into a community building opportunity,” Rhinevault said. According to Rhinevault, the support that she and the others involved in the project have received was unexpected and a little overwhelming. Since the beginning of the project, one volunteer in particular has been of tremendous support. “I’m working with them to create a monarch waystation,” said Susan Fagnat of Hastings. Members of the Lakeville Fire Department were dispatched to a possible structure fire apparently caused by an improperly discarded cigarette at 1:50 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at 17526 Haverhill Circle. Lakeville police officers arriving on scene indicated that there was a fire on the front porch with heavy smoke. They were able to access the deck from the rear of the home and locate a single occupant and remove him from the structure. Arriving fire units upgraded the response to second alarm, which dispatched all four fire stations to the scene. Fire crews were able to knock the fire down quickly, which greatly reduced the damage to the interior of the home. Lakeville Fire Marshal Brian Carstensen said that the two front windows on the house were broken from the extreme heat and that the fire was progressing into the house as firefighters arrived. Carstensen said fire crews did an excellent job stopping the fire from moving beyond the front room of the house. They were also concerned with the location of the gas meter, which was located in the front of the home and melted as a result of the fire. Due to the smoke damage, as well as the gas meter damage, the homeowners were unable to occupy the home after the fire. There were no reported injuries.
Dumb criminal receives citation for loud music in Lakeville Lakevile Police Officer Shawn Fitzhenry responded to an apartment building on a report of loud music coming from an apartment. He easily located the apartment due to the loud music that was audible in the hallway of the building. Fitzhenry made contact with the resident of the apartment and advised him of the complaint and to turn down the volume. The officer further advised the resident that if he continued to play his music so loudly, he would be issued a ticket. The resident turned down his music, and Fitzhenry returned to his patrol duties. Not long after, Fitzhenry received a call back to the same location. Fitzhenry stood for a few minutes in the hallway outside the apartment from where the music was coming. The resident turned the music volume up and down for minutes at a time, meanwhile yelling at the neighbor who he thought made the complaint. The resident then made derogatory comments about the police, before turning up his music again. Fitzhenry made contact with the subject a second time and issued him a citation for disturbing the peace.

One night under the lights for the love of the game Special needs softball teams compete in annual tournament in Lakeville BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS An annual softball tournament may not garner the fanfare of the World Series, but for more than 200 special needs players, it is their night to shine. For nearly seven years, Kota Connections of Lakeville has been coordinating the Dakota County softball league at Aronson Park. And each year the season culminates with one night of fun, food and softball. This year, that night was Aug. 16. Kota Connections has provided services for special needs adults for nearly 20 years. In addition to softball, the organization assists its clients with apartment checks, medical appointments, and social activities. The organization’s softball league just happens to be its most popular activity.
According to Kota Connections owner David Modrynski, it has been a very popular event not only for the players but also for family, friends and fans as well. “We’ve been averaging over 300 [spectators] for the past three or four years,” Modrynski said. The season begins every year in April with tryouts and runs through the summer until the big night when teams representing Kota and similar organizations, mostly in Dakota County, compete against one another, as well as all-star and exhibition games. The all-star teams consist of selected players from throughout the league, while the exhibition game pits all-stars against many Dakota County social workers. “We work with Dakota County and their social workers,” Modrynski said. “They put a team together that comes down.” The league has all-stars for both the A and B levels of play, and the social workers compete against the players at each. “It’s very unusual to get social workers to come on their own time to participate,” he added. “That’s pretty neat.”
As part of the annual softball tournament for special needs adults, Aug. 16 at Aronson Park in Lakeville, special needs all-stars competed against Dakota County social workers prior to the tournament games. The event has grown in popularity in the past four years, averaging about 300 spectators. (Submitted photo)
Members of the KC Fireballs took a moment to pose for a celebratory picture after winning the annual softball championship. The team, which is overseen by Kota Connections of Lakeville, competes in an A league that plays against softball teams from other organizations in the south metro and culminates every year with a night of all-star games, exhibition games and of course tournament games. (Submitted photo) But the excitement seemingly rests mostly with the more than 200 players. Bryana Seifert, Burnsville resident and coach of the B-level KC Lightening, said the players are excited about the tournament all year long, especially during the final night of the season when they play under the bright lights at Aronson Park in front of hundreds of fans. Fellow Kota Connections coach Kerri Spidahl, a Lakeville resident and coach for nearly 10 years, underscored Seifert’s comments. “They live for this league,” she said. “Some of them who are really into it will practice on their own. It’s all they talk about all year.” Robbin Blanchard is a Kota Connections client and a player who has been active in softball for nearly 10 years. Blanchard became a Kota client after being in a motor vehicle accident in 2001 that left him disabled. He is also a certified coach for the Special Olympics. “It’s just nice to have fun,” he said. “If we lose, we lose. It’s fun to win, but we are here to enjoy the game and be involved with a bunch of people, so it’s lots of fun.” Due to a more recent injury, Blanchard has been working with players, namely those new to the game. He works with them on fielding and hitting, overall teaching them how to play the
game. Blanchard broke his back in April. “I played with the A team for quite a while,” he said. “I couldn’t compete like the A players compete, so I moved down to the B squad to help them out and understand the game more.” Despite his injury, Blanchard was excited about this year’s tournament, which had two Kota Connections teams playing for the championship at their respective levels. Representing Kota Connections in the A-level championship was the KC Fireballs, winning the first-place title. At the same time, the organization also had its B-level KC Lightening team in the championship game, but the team came up just a little short, thus taking second. Kota Connection’s other B team, the KC Thunder, competed and won in the fifth- and sixth-place game. Chad Jansen is a member of the Alevel KC Fireballs that won the championship, but like Blanchard was unable to play this season due to an injury. Jansen unfortunately broke his hand in his first practice with a Special Olympics team. He commented on the reason he participates in the activity. “I just like the game because it’s fun, and it’s competitive,” he said. Sharing his competitive nature, Jansen said prior to the game, “I am predicting a win.”

Noise, access among concerns for Black Dog repowering project State holds public input meeting in Burnsville City Hall BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS A proposal by Xcel Energy to repower two coal-burning units into natural-gas units raised concerns for some residents who live near the facility. Around 60 community residents attended a public input meeting Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Burnsville City Hall to provide input and ask questions with regard to a plan by Xcel Energy to repower its Black Dog plant. The purpose of the meeting at this point in the process was to allow Minnesota Department of
Commerce Energy Facility Permitting and Xcel officials to give brief presentations that summarized the project and to allow community residents to voice concerns, ask questions and provide input that will be considered in the scope of an environmental assessment. The repowering project would consist of retiring the last two coal-burning units at Black Dog, units 3 and 4, and replacing the units with natural-gas burning units. Units 1 and 2 underwent the conversion to a natural gas combined-cycle operation nearly 10 years ago. The meeting was just one step in a lengthy permitting process. At this point in the process, Xcel is BLACK DOG PLANT: TO PAGE 7

Contrary to popular belief, a season exists between summer and winter CURRENT Burnsville • Lakeville
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
Recently, I’ve been hearing low grumblings that seem to appear every year in late August. No, it’s not the sound of thousands of Minnesotans traveling en masse to the state fair, but these grumblings may be on their breath. This is the time of year when the words “summer” and “winter” are used in the same conversation. As in, “Can you believe summer’s almost over?” “It’s going to be winter in two months.” Technically, there’s three more weeks of summer days, but it’s commonly accepted that summer ends when the Labor Day weekend is over and schools are once again in session. Now, before you get depressed and start unpacking your parkas and Sorels,
MATTHEW HANKEY Apple Valley/Eagan Rosemount Community Editor
remember there is a season in between summer and the six months of Ice Age-like weather. What’s the old joke? “There are nine months of winter and three months of construction.” While that might often seem true, taking that to heart prevents an enjoyment of a great season – my favorite season – fall. Fall means the return of football season, crisp air and the start of the school year. It’s all marked by a decrease in tans and, thankfully for many, putting the lawn mower away
for quite awhile. I could never pinpoint my exact enjoyment of fall. I’m not sure I can now, but I can say what I enjoy about it. I’ve been a diehard football fanatic since the second Reagan administration. Watching games on the weekends and tossing the pigskin with friends has always been a rite of the fall season for me. The other point of enjoyment is the fall air used to be electric with the anxiety and anticipation of a new school year. Having been out of school for more than four years, that particular excitement has waned, but I can parlay my past experience to covering schools, students and teachers in my Dakota County coverage area. I can find out what
excites them, and what they’re looking forward to for the 2011-2012 school year. I joined the Dakota County Sun-Current team in late May as the school year was wrapping up. I was still new to the job and my editor was covering schools at the time. Now that I’ve gained some experience and knowledge of the region, I’m ready to hear your stories. Of course, this invitation extends beyond schools. I am interested in any news or leads you have to offer. It’s been a pleasure getting to know and work with some of you in the community the past three months. Without your help, the paper wouldn’t be what it is. Now, get outside and enjoy the last days of summer!
Re-think: Recycling while on the go BY ANGIE TIMMONS GUEST COLUMNIST It’s more popular than ever for Minnesotans to recycle at home, but do you keep it going while you’re traveling or out and about? Many of us take road trips, attend family get-togethers, and go on vacation during the last few weeks of summer, and it’s important to find ways to recycle along the way. It can be surprising how much waste one person can produce when traveling, but implementing a few simple things to reduce waste and conserve resources will minimize your environmental footprint. Here are some easy things you can do to make a difference: If possible, use public transportation while traveling, or car-
pool with others who are going to the same destination. Use electronic tickets whenever possible to avoid paper waste. If you don’t see recycling bins at your destination, ask the person or company in charge. Hopefully, a friendly suggestion will encourage them to implement a program. Bring a bag for your own recycling. If you’re spending the day traveling or staying somewhere you know won’t provide recycling opportunities, pack a bag for your recyclable items and recycle them when you get home. Keep an eye out for recycling bins along your route. Gas stations, rest areas and parks often have a place you can deposit your recycling rather than haul-
ing it all the way home. As you shop for groceries and supplies for your trip, look for environmentally-friendly packaging and pack items in reusable containers. If you’re hosting a get-together away from home, be sure to put out paper bags or containers for recycling near the trash bin and label them clearly. Hopefully, your guests will follow your lead and do the sorting for you. Choose or encourage the use of reusable or recyclable materials (cups, plates, utensils, etc.) in all your activities. With a little forethought, it’s easy to make it a habit to recycle on the go and the results are worth it to protect the environment. Think about what you can do to help while enjoying your
summer celebrations, vacations and travels. For more tips on recycling and waste options, visit RethinkRecycling.com, your goto guide for waste and recycling information in the Twin Cities. And enjoy the beautiful Minnesota summer! Black Dog plant FROM PAGE 5 seeking approval of a certificate of need and an application for a site and route permit. Among the concerns voiced by some in attendance included the noise during construction, access to the location, and the entire project’s timeline. James Zyduck, Black Dog plant director, reiterated what the project aims to do, touching on some benefits to the community. “We have several air emission improvements as a result of the conversion,” he said, adding that the repowering project would also eliminate about 8,300 rail cars delivering coal each year. Soon after the presentations, community members had the opportunity to ask the officials questions, as well as voice concerns. Burnsville resident Deborah Johnson said she resides about a quarter mile away from the plant with her husband, Marv, and she inquired about the noise during construction. “It’s in our backyard,” she said, emphasizing how important the issue is to her and her husband. Zyduck responded to Johnson’s ques-
tion by citing the success of a similar project conducted on the High Bridge plant in St. Paul. “The easiest way to answer that question is to show you what we are doing,” Zyduck said. “It was very successful. We worked with the neighborhoods.” Zyduck continued by mentioning limitations that were set with regard to trucking and construction to mitigate noise. More emphatically, Zyduck said. “It’s really hard for me to quantify until you can see it and feel it.” Energy Facility Permitting State Permitting Manager Scott Ek also spoke to the issue of noise. “I’m sure during construction you are going to hear an increase in noise,” he said. “That will end when the construction is complete.” He added that one would not necessarily hear all of the construction, referencing the different types of construction projects that would not contribute greatly to the noise. “I believe the neighborhoods in the area are far enough removed,” Ek said. Regarding the access issue, one woman in attendance said she read that the existing roads were not capable of handling the increased traffic loads during the construction period.

Zyduck acknowledged that access is already an issue, whether or not the plant is repowered. “The 1,400 trucks currently is creating an issue,” he said. “It has nothing to do with the expansion.” He later added, “Whether we repower or not, we have an access issue. They are issues for current operations. Lakeville resident returning to Guatemala to serve hometown fire department Applying firefighting experience with San Lucas Fire Department BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Unlike most who retire, one Lakeville resident will not be spending his time on a golf course or at a resort. Instead, he will be returning to his impoverished hometown to serve its community. Romeo Maldonado spent 27 years working at Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend Refinery in Rosemount and was a volunteer member of the Pine Bend Refinery Fire Department for 12 years. Maldonado’s last day was Aug. 25, and he will be in his hometown of San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala, by Sunday, Sept. 25, to serve with the town’s fire department. “I want to bring something to them, back to my hometown of San Lucas,” Maldonado said. “I have joined the fire department in my hometown. I have had meetings with them a couple times.” Maldonado intends to bring his knowledge and experience that he acquired during his 12 years with Pine Bend to the San Lucas department, which has only been
in existence for two years, he said. “I was a lieutenant, and I had a crew of four or five members with me for any kind of a response that we had,” the 61year-old said. According to Maldonado, he and other crewmembers responded to small product leaks and small fires. Longtime colleague and fellow member of the refinery’s fire department, Deputy Fire Chief Dan Moe, elaborated on Maldonado’s modesty. “We are dealing with more volatile substances,” Moe said. “It is a little more dangerous than a municipal department on a daily basis. Granted we don’t have a lot of fires, but when we do, they are typically larger scale.” Moe continued by saying that at an oil refinery, there is a tendency to get a lot of hydrocarbon petroleum fires. In additions to bringing himself to the fairly new fire department in San Lucas, Maldonado will also be bringing much needed equipment and other supplies, such as neck braces and first responder medical aid equipment, as well as smaller but needed items as gauze bandages and band-aids. “These people are going to love it,” Maldonado said. “The equipment I’m planning to bring to the fire department
Lakeville resident Romeo Maldonado and several other members of the Pine Bend Refinery Fire Department extinguish a fire as part of a routine training drill. Maldonado returned to his home country of Guatemala Aug. 25, bringing with him his firefighting knowledge acquired as a volunteer firefighter. (Submitted photo)
Romeo Maldonado, originally from Guatemala, has volunteered as a member of the Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend Refinery Fire Department for the past 12 years, in addition to 15 years as an employee. Though he is retiring from his position after 27 years, Maldonado took on a new firefighting role after he returned to his hometown of San Lucas, Guatemala, to serve on a nearly full-time basis with its fire department. (Submitted photo) is for medical needs.” But the veteran firefighter commented on the refinery and assistance he hopes to receive for firefighter turnout gear. “That was my plea of help to the refinery, and they are willing to help me,” he said. “They told me they’d help me with something to bring to the fire department of San Lucas.” According to Moe, who has been fighting fires for nearly 30 years and is also a member of his hometown fire department of River Falls, Wis., the training Maldonado and all other fire fighters receive is quite comprehensive. “We have a pretty intensive in-house training program. One day a week we do fire training in-house,” Moe said. “Annually everybody gets the opportunity to train in Corpus Christi, Texas.” The training is set up on a three-year rotation, so every third year refinery firefighters alternate who attends, according to Moe. Commenting on work ethic, Moe said Maldonado’s is among the best. “He’s not afraid to get in and get dirty,” Moe said. “He is always willing to help, and he is always willing to train new personnel.” Though Maldonado is excited about returning to his hometown to serve its citizens, he is equally excited to see fam-
ily, especially his father. “My whole family is down there: brothers, sisters, and my father who is 90 years old,” he said. In his nearly 30 years in the U.S., Maldonado made many friends who he plans to stay in frequent contact with. Actually, he has visited his hometown on several occasions with some of his American friends during his time in the states. Overall, the Guatemalan native said he is very grateful for his experience for many reasons. “It’s always been in the newspapers as the great land of opportunities,” he said. “That’s why I worked there for so many years, because of the opportunity to be part of their successful company.” At the time Maldonado left his home country to come to the United States, San Lucas had approximately 1,500 residents. Today, the population is about 18,000, according to Maldonado. Given this dramatic increase in the population, it perhaps is a good thing that Maldonado will be joining his brother, Carlos, he returned to San Lucas six years ago after retiring from 3M, where he worked for more than three decades. According to Maldonado, both share a conviction to serve their community in various ways, such as improving its overall conditions and increasing jobs.

Exhibiting what she’s learned so far, she added, “The first thing they eat is their shell.” Rhinevault said all Minnesota state academic standards are either being met or exceeded with regard to the curriculum used in teaching a variety of subjects, all stemming from the garden project. She added that the garden has allowed them to incorporate learning in the areas of math, science, history, art, and reading and writing. “The gardens have differentiated our teaching to accommodate all types of learning styles,” Rhinevault said, adding that the project “encompasses every single subject.” She said that support for the project has come from such organizations as the Vista View parent/teacher organization, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and members of the community. “The gardens have been a tool to bring the community together for one important purpose, and that is our children,” Rhinevault said. “Everyone who hears about what we are doing is excited to be part of it.”

Waystations are locations that offer resources for monarchs to continue to produce future generations. According to both Rhinevault and Brostrom, Fagnat’s help in the project has been tremendous, in addition to the help from her husband, Kurt Fagnat. The first garden was begun with flowers to attract monarchs and insects. The project then grew to include four other gardens, each serving a particular purpose. They include a milkweed garden, a native prairie garden, a lifecycles garden, and a fruits and vegetables garden. The decision to add the gardens after the first was based on the excitement exhibited by the students, according to Rhinevault. “Our students get to see the entire process of the lifecycle,” Rhinevault said. “It is what we need to get kids

Edythe L. Pizzala Edythe L. Pizzala, died at Hillcrest of Wayzata, Wayzata, Minn. on August 22, 2011 – four years after the death of her beloved and handsome husband of 65 years, George E. Pizzala. A resident of Bloomington, Minn. for more than 53 years, Edythe was born August 12, 1923 in Fresno, Calif. to George and Anna Eurich. Edythe fondly remembered her early years growing up on an orchard farm with her 22 siblings and half-siblings. She graduated Roosevelt High School, Fresno, Calif. in 1940. Edythe had a beautiful singing voice and, along with her sisters, performed live and on the radio on many occasions. Edythe met her husband George in 1942 and it was love at first sight. They married 3 days later in Reno, Nevada. Thereafter, Edythe lived the life of an Army wife, following George to many duty stations around the world, including Japan and Europe. While stationed in Germany, Edythe organized the first Boy Scout Troop there for American military families, as well as for her own two young sons at the time, Dennis and Keith. Edythe and George settled in Bloomington, Minn. in the late 50s. In 1964, Edythe joined the Hennepin County Welfare Dept. as a Home Management Counselor. In this capacity, she taught home management skills – such as budgeting, child care, home maintenance and nutrition – to low income mothers. Edythe thrived in this role for 20 years and was recognized by the then State of Minnesota Governor for her succcessful pilot programs dealing with young unwed mothers. After retiring from the Welfare Dept. in 1985, Edythe started her own business called PIZZAZ, a consulting company that taught seniors transitional skills needed for successful retirement. Edythe had a unique flair and artistic eye, which were expressed in many creative outlets throughout her life. She became a talented watercolor and oil painter. She designed beautiful rooms, gardens and floral arrangements. In her 70s, she started Edie's Interior & Floral Design, selling her paintings and elaborate silk flower arrangements and wreaths to local galleries and businesses. She later taught painting classes for friends and neighbors. Edythe was very outgoing and made lifelong friendships with people of all ages with whom she shared her love of gardening, cooking, antiques, music, and singing. An adventurous spirit, she was always eager to learn new hobbies and skills, whether it be tai chi, calligraphy, or making flavored olive oils and vinegars. Edythe is survived by her son, Keith (Jody), daughter, Carolynn Sherby (Jim); grandchildren, Tina Floersch, Lisa Mogler, Nicolas Pizzala, and Brielle Pizzala; and great-grand- children, Sarina, Ashley, Antonio, Dominic and Adrianna. Another son, Dennis, preceded her in death in 1993. Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. A national program that helps young children improve their musical abilities is gaining momentum in Dakota County. The program – Music Together – exists to help children reach basic music competence, which is defined as the ability to sing in tune, keep a beat and take pleasure in the ability to make music. The program asserts that all children are born musical and can reach a basic level of musical proficiency. Children also learn by modeling and mimicking their parents – who play a large role in the classes. “We’re born wired to know how to sing, but all that needs a very supportive environment for that to happen,” said Claire Auluck-Wilson, director of the Stillwaterbased Music in the Valley. Auluck-Wilson said that in the last 20 years, research shows a 30 percent decline in the number of fifth graders who can sing in tune. “Children get a lot of experience taking
in music, but not a lot in experimenting, not expressing it,” she said. Children as young as a few weeks old to Kindergarteners are eligible for the classes, which involve both children and parents or guardians singing, dancing, and rhythm instrument activities that are appropriate for very young children. Eight years ago, Auluck-Wilson opened Music in the Valley in Stillwater and began teaching classes that same year. This past spring, Auluck-Wilson brought the program to Apple Valley and had such positive results that she’s expanding the program to Lakeville, Rosemount and Farmington this fall. Eagan also offers Music Together courses through its Parks and Recreation Department. Ewa Hylandsson of Apple Valley brought her two girls to Music in the Valley this past spring at the Apple Valley Community Center. “We got there … and I couldn’t believe MUSIC CLASSES: TO NEXT PAGE
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
Music classes FROM PREVIOUS PAGE what I was seeing,” said Hylandsson. “It was really a music class. Kids were holding notes and doing scales. I thought it would be a bunch of kids singing ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider.’” Hylandsson said her oldest daughter, Hannah, 3, has always showed high musical aptitude, but thinks the Music Together classes have enhanced her abilities. Before taking the classes, Hannah would make up her own words to songs she already knew. “I think she’s gotten more creative,” Hylandsson said of Hannah. “Now, she’s making up more of the melody herself.” Robin McGuire of Eagan will be a firstyear Music in the Valley teacher leading classes at the Lakeville Art Center. As part of her training, she observed and helped lead Stillwater classes this summer. McGuire is looking forward to the sense of community she hopes to create with parents and children in her classes. She got an early sense of that connectedness during her time in Stillwater. “All of a sudden, you’re dancing, and you’re moving, and you’re singing,” McGuire said. “The adults are moving around and they don’t realize that they’re modeling for the kids.” “The whole thing is experience-based and we model for our kids so they can feel comfortable singing, dancing and being together,” said McGuire, who holds an elementary education degree from the University of Minnesota and who spends
considerable time with her church’s choir program. McGuire’s sister, Laurie McFaul of Rosemount, will also be teaching Music Together in the Valley classes at Dance Connection in Rosemount. McFaul has a degree in musicology from the University of Minnesota with a focus on the violin. She recently began playing the mandolin. Sarah Hardy, who taught Apple Valley Music Together in the Valley classes this past spring, can testify to the unity between parents and teacher. She has taught Music Together courses for three years, the first two in Portland, Ore. “It’s a neat, neat thing because parents and kids get to play with each other and play together with music,” said Hardy, now of Edina. “It’s a real joy for them and a real joy for me.” There’s no pressure for children to perform or even participate in the class, said Auluck-Wilson. She knows children’s attention spans are fleeting. But, she’s confident the kids are still absorbing the music they hear. “(There are) no expectations,” said Auluck-Wilson. “Children are free to wander or take in the experience. We know that children in early childhood are able to soak in the music even if it looks like they’re not paying attention at all. What is important is what’s going on at home.” Parents are given two CDs of music performed in the class, as well as a songbook to take home. Hylandsson’s youngest daughter, Kelly, was 16 months old at the time she took the classes in the spring. She didn’t participate as much as her sister Hannah, but she still proved to be a quick learner.

“Kelly was quiet in the class, but was singing all the songs at home,” said her mother. Throughout the 10-week program, children will learn 30 songs of varying musical styles. Children will hear music that broadens their sense of rhythm and melody. Most children’s music is in a major key and counted the same way, said Auluck-Wilson. By listening to music from Korea, China, Spain, as well as American Jazz and Blues, their rhythmic and melodic skills will be advanced for their ages and can be recalled later in life, Auluck-Wilson said. “If children are exposed to it when
13
they’re young, they can come back to it and have easy access,” said AuluckWilson. McGuire is excited to kick off her Music Together teaching career and hopes to instill musical confidence in both children and adults in her classes. “I’m just hoping to start to get to know the families and to make it a good, fun experience for everybody and to create a sense of community with music,” she said. Free demonstrations will meet this fall at various locations in Apple Valley, Farmington, Lakeville and Rosemount. Info: clarice@musictogetherclasses.com or call 651-439-4219.

Rasmussen College Career Expo provides job opportunities for students More than 150 students, community members and 32 companies attend jobs fair BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Though the nation’s economy is still reeling, employers are hiring. A recent career fair exhibited dozens of local and national companies looking at students and community members to fill open job positions. On Aug. 25, Rasmussen College in Eagan held a career fair that featured 32 companies and more than 150 active students, alumni and members of the community. The event coincided with 20 other Rasmussen College Career Expos nationwide that day, including Twin Cities’ metro locations in Bloomington, Blaine and Brooklyn Park. Tammy Jackson, campus director at Rasmussen College, said large companies are typically invited to attend the expo because they cater to the degree programs the college offers. The school has degree programs in
the Schools of Business, Nursing, Education, Health Sciences, Technology & Design and Justice Studies. “We try to take that mixture focusing on what [career] outcomes would be best for the students,” Jackson said. Maurice Fortin, HR business representative with Office Max, said his company targets students and recent graduates for part-time positions such as sales assistants and consultants. There are some leadership positions available as well, Fortin said. The career expo is useful for Fortin because it drums up interest for his company and can get the application process jump-started, he said. “Getting the word out there and promoting the company is what it’s all about,” Fortin said, estimating he talked to 25 students and community members an hour into the expo. Another employer who set up shop at the expo was Frontier Communications, a rural telecommunications company. Scott Runnels, 42, of Apple Valley stopped at the Frontier booth and talked with one of its representatives. He’s considering enrolling at Rasmussen College and used the career
expo as a measuring stick whether or not to apply to the school. Runnels is undecided about a career path, but knows he is interested in taking courses. “I’d probably prefer online courses,” he said. Down the row, Amy Omlie, HR specialist recruiter at Securitas Security Services, spoke with South St. Paul resident and Rasmussen College student Laurie Nelson about a position at the company. Nelson, 42, is taking office management courses with a medical emphasis at Rasmussen College. “I’m looking for administrative positions in the medical field or administration in general,” Nelson said, adding she would consider a position with Securitas. Omlie said the fair proved successful in recruiting qualified people for her company. “I’ve definitely had people today that I hope will apply and that I would hire,” Omlie said. Burnsville resident Lee Montgomery, 22, stopped by the Office Max booth and spoke with Fortin about job opportunities with the company. Montgomery, a Hennepin Technical
College student specializing in graphic design, is open to any position that would allow him to utilize his skills. Down the road, Montgomery envisions becoming his own employer. “Eventually, I want to own my own company,” he said, adding he would start out by doing freelance graphic design work. Jake Speckman, 26, of Apple Valley is a Rasmussen College student specializing in information systems management. Like many other students and community members, he’s open to most any position once he graduates. Being employed is the important thing for him, though he does have a career plan. “Ultimately, my goal is to work specifically for the network side of things,” Speckman said, adding he would take any position “as long as it pertains to my career path.” Jackson said the career expo has gradually grown over the years and is more successful than ever. It’s important that students and members of the community are given quality employment opportunities, she said. The career expo provides that opportunity. “We’re hearing people are already setting up interviews,” Jackson said.

Fire Muster 2011 introducing block party, helicopter rides Memorial service planned for 10th anniversary of 9/11 BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Just like the Minnesota State Fair, the Burnsville Fire Muster has signified the end of summer for Burnsville residents since it began officially in 1980. From that perspective, the communitywide event has grown, adding features almost every year, and this year is no different as the 2011 event will feature a block party with live entertainment and helicopter rides provided by Minnesota Helicopters. Fire Muster official Gerry Zielinski said the event has “never had a block party before and never had one that will be inclusive to fill a parking lot capable of accommodating 1,000 people.” The Fire Muster block party is 5-10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, and will feature two outdoor performances and a third inside. The Timothy Howe Trio will kick off the evening, striking their first chord at 5 p.m. The musical act Down Lo is scheduled to follow at 7:30 p.m., and both will perform on the
outdoor stage. Also starting at 5 p.m. will be Mark Mraz, Burnsville’s own piano man. He will be performing inside Morgan’s. According to Zielinski, the block party, sponsored by the Nicollet Inn, will feature food, a beer garden, and wine inside. Staying on the music note, Zielinski added that this year’s event would feature another musical performance by Brat Pack Radio, described as an a-typical cover band with a high-energy, non-stop show that pokes fun at the excesses of the ’80s decade. The helicopter rides will be 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Best Western Premier Nicollet Inn and will consist of nearly 10-minute rides performed by Minnesota Helicopters. Rides will also be performed 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, on top of the hill and west of the main stage. The rides continue the next day, beginning at noon at the same location. Following the parade Sunday, Sept. 11, the helicopter rides will continue, again on top of the hill and west of the main stage. The 9/11 tenth anniversary memorial service will begin at the end of the parade on the main stage of Civic Center Park, Nicollet Ave and Civic Center Drive.

Burnsville football charts another course One of the new head coach’s first acts was naming the former head coach to his staff BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Burnsville has a new head football coach, new coordinators and a lot of new starters. But the Blaze isn’t completely separating itself from its past. About half of new head coach Tyler Krebs’ staff was in the Blaze program last year. That group includes Mark Riggs, who was Burnsville’s head coach for four years before stepping down last fall. Krebs reached out to Riggs, asking him to stay with the team. Riggs accepted and is now Burnsville’s linebackers coach. “He loves Burnsville, loves Burnsville football, played here and has coached here for a long time,” Krebs said. “When he looked at what we were trying to do, he wanted to be a part of it. He’s a huge fountain of knowledge.” It also helps that Riggs teaches at Burnsville High. Krebs will be the only other football coach in the building at BHS. Krebs, formerly defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Eastview, will be his own defensive coordinator at Burnsville. He hired former Centennial head coach Mike Watson as offensive coordinator. Also, Scott Sahli came over from Northfield to head up BHS’ strength program. Sahli was the 2011 National Strength and Conditioning Association Coach of the Year. There are new playbooks, schemes and terminology for the football team. But that might be OK, because many of
Burnsville players go after the football during an intrasquad scrimmage last week. (Photo by Mike Shaughnessy • Sun Newspapers) the players are new, too. The coaches “got in early enough that we were able to do a lot of stuff in the summer,” Krebs said. “That was huge, because it gave us a head start, not only at the high school level, but installing our system in the youth program.” Almost all of the backs and receivers from last year’s offense graduated,
including quarterback Cameron Jones, Burnsville’s all-time leader in passing yardage, and C.J. Smith, who rushed for 1,196 yards in 2010. One constant on offense is Chase Roullier, a senior beginning his third season as a starting lineman. He has received scholarship offers from several colleges, including Toledo and Northern Iowa.
Who will Roullier and his teammates on the offensive line block for? That answer is a little less clear. Senior Dan Motl, center fielder for Burnsville’s state championship baseball team, and junior Ben Baker are competing to start at quarterback. Seniors Jalen Dyson and Lavonte are BLAZE: TO NEXT PAGE

Notebook: BV takes 2nd at state amateur baseball tourney BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Burnsville Bobcats finished second in the state Class B men’s amateur baseball tournament, winning four of its six games before falling to Sauk Rapids 12-1 in the championship game Aug. 28 in Glencoe. The Bobcats were seeded 16th of the 16 teams that qualified for the super section level of the Class B playoffs. They have a number of players who are alumni of Burnsville High School and several other local high schools. After going 1-1 in the opening weekend of the tournament Aug. 20-21, the Bobcats defeated Miesville 3-2 in an elimination game Aug. 26. The Bobcats scored three times in the eighth inning on a one-run double by Zach Harazin and a two-run single by Chad Eul.
Grant Larson was the winning pitcher, with Garrett Walters getting the final out to earn a save. Burnsville won twice on Aug. 27 to reach the final. Casey Jacobsen pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts as the Bobcats defeated Cannon Valley League rival Savage 6-0. Eul had two hits and three RBI. Rob Wiens and David Keeney had two hits each. The loss ended the state tournament for Savage, another town team with a number of Burnsville High School alumni. The Outlaws finished third in the state Class B tournament last year. Burnsville edged the Mankato Twins 53 on Aug. 27, avenging a loss from the first weekend of the state tournament. It was a long, productive day for Jacobson. After pitching a complete game
against Savage, he worked the first 7 1/3 innings against Mankato, holding the Twins to four hits and one unearned run. Walters pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to get the save. Harazin was 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Eul went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Sauk Rapids ended the Aug. 28 final with a nine-run seventh inning. Burnsville would have needed to defeat Sauk Rapids twice to win the double-elimination state tournament. Wiens, Eul, Matt Trocke and Roddy Hjort had two hits apiece against Sauk Rapids.
Add one to the streak Apple Valley’s boys soccer team extended its winning streak to 48 games with a 31 victory over Owatonna in its season opener Aug. 25 at Johnny Cake Ridge Park.
Connor Flanagan, Mitchell Dawson and David Racine scored for the Eagles, and Kevin Conway had two assists. Apple Valley played Holy Family on Monday and will play host to Richfield at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, and Minnehaha Academy at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. If Apple Valley’s streak is still intact next week, it could face major challenges from two South Suburban Conference opponents. The Eagles play host to Lakeville North at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Johnny Cake Ridge Park and take on Bloomington Jefferson at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the National Sports Center in Blaine. Lakeville North and Jefferson both qualified for the state Class AA tournament in 2010, where Apple Valley won its second consecutive state title and ninth overall.
Blaze FROM PREVIOUS PAGE part of a large group of running back candidates. No underclassman caught a pass for Burnsville last season. Junior Clay Hurlbut could emerge as the top passing target this year. Senior defensive back Michael Callanan was fourth on the team in tackles last year with 45 and also recovered three fumbles. Other key defensive players could be junior linebacker Evan Voxland, senior linemen Brian VanderWoude and Matt Deering, junior lineman Zach Svare, senior defensive back Mike Becker and junior defensiveback Andrew Herkenhoff. Roullier also could see some spot duty on the defensive line. Krebs said it will be hard to tell how the Blaze matches up athletically until it starts playing other teams, but Burnsville appears to have decent overall quickness. The coach also is pleased with what he has seen from the senior class. “I’ve been impressed, and it starts with the seniors,” he said. “Even though some of them haven’t played [on varsity] yet, they have very good talent.” Burnsville served as host of the annual Watermelon Bowl scrimmage on Aug. 27. Asked earlier last week how many starting positions were up for grabs going into the Watermelon Bowl, Krebs said they all were. “Our goal as coaches is to get the best 22 guys on the field,” he said. “We think we have depth at every position
Tyler Krebs, Burnsville High School’s new head football coach, speaks with his players following a scrimmage last week. (Photo by Mike Shaughnessy • Sun Newspapers) and competition at every position, but nothing is set.” Burnsville last had a winning season in 2006, and Krebs is aware that the pro-
gram could use a shot of confidence. “The best thing we could do is win a big game as soon as possible,” he said. The Blaze’s first shot at a victory in
2011 comes at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, when it plays host to Bloomington Jefferson. Burnsville beat Jefferson 3520 in the 2010 season opener.
